ALCHEMY ARCHITECTURE Alchemy Architecture is an architectural practice focusing on mid-high end alterations and additions, new houses and a range of other commercial/public projects. During the last four years I have been exposed to a number of interesting projects. These projects have progressed through all phases; existing conditions, sketch design, development application/complying development, construction/ tender documentation through to contract administration and post construction management.

The site is located within the Ryde City Municipality. The challenges of this site were varied with the main issue relating to the site being a flood-controlled lot dictating a particular ground floor RL. The clients were builder/developers who had worked with the firm previously and had bought the site knowing a new house could be built via Complying Development approval. My input into this project started half way through the sketch design phase, the layout almost completed however no external Architecture had been resolved. I worked closely with the firms director and the client to ensure the brief was met. Once sign off was received I worked with the builders preferred certifier who required a few small changes. These were completed and approval received. Construction began and although not engaged we were called on for input where required, this included problem solving and material/finishes selections.

During construction we were notified by the client that they had altered a few wall locations. These had to be updated in the CC documentation and issued to the certifier. I completed all these changes after receiving mark up drawings. After project completion the property was sold seeing this process through from start to finish was an interesting learning experience.

The Hunters Hill project was one of my longest running projects at Alchemy. Starting out as a Heritage listed sandstone dwelling with an 80’s addition connecting the two cottage pavilions. The client had requested a modern extension taking advantage of the available natural light which the existing never successfully accessed. My work on this project began prior to DA submission and saw extensive shuffling of the layout to appease the planner and heritage consultant. With a successful DA approved a long process of construction documentation commenced which also included a section 4.55 as requested by the client. The project went to tender coming back over the previous estimates however the project still went through signing and construction commenced early 2021.

The client had a couple high priority items which were addressed in the documentation and some requiring rectification during construction. These items consisted of water egress through the existing box gutter/roof which was severally dilapidated. Thermal and acoustic impacts throughout the existing and proposed structures. Visual representation of the proposed joinery including selection of the marble which was highly specific and difficult to find. These items were covered throughly in the specification document and all Architectural drawings which took time to fine-tune with help from the firms director. The project is still in construction.

This project was handed over to me prior to DA submission. The design was generally complete however there were many changes during my time managing it. This consited of height and FSR compliance, reconfiguration to reduce area of excavation and general layout shifting requested by the client. The client was the director of a contractor we used frequently. This was a great experience because not only did they have an appreciation for the architecture they were always discussing the constructablity of each element the design proposed. The firm was not engaged through construction however we were called to site on occation to provide comment on issues which the contractor came accorss.

An issue for this project was that once construction started the contractor continued to make on the fly changes. This saw the requirement for two Section 4.55 applications having to be lodged. These were entirely managed by me due to the time constraints of the client. The contractor would also often contact me directly to requesting comment on finish, material or detail which was a great learning experience and also means the contractor and I are still in contact. The project is still in construction.

One of the more unique residential projects I worked on at Alchemy. The site located near Kiama had a DA completed by a previous team member. After the DA was approved the project was paused for a few years and upon recomencement of it was evident that the clients needs had shifted, this brought on changes to the layout which were extensive and on going. During these changes the client had found a local contractor who had an excelent portfolio of highend architectural homes. We began working with him to provide higher level detail allowing him to provide more clear pricing on cost of works. a change which we initially undersood to be $1m and ended close to $3m. Unfortunattyly once we came to packaging the CC documentaion the changes were too different for the certifier to comfortably issue meaning another redesign was required. I left shortly after the CC packaged was issued.

I was introduced to this project after construction had started; the slab had been poured and the majority of the framing structure was up. It was a new four bedroom, two storey house with an existing pool at the rear which was to be refinished. It was early on in my time at the firm meaning I was less invloved in the contract admin of this project however I was at all site meetings and managed the defects & practical completion certificates which the director would sign off. The clients were amazing and had nothing but praise, they returned the following year to have a BBQ unit built in. This was documented and priced by the original contractor who managed the project directly with the client.

When I picked up this project the DA had been approved, unfortunately council had been quite difficult adding a few difficult conditions to manage prior to CC and tender. The property is located in a conservation area and includes a two storey terrace with an existing weather board addition to the rear. The proposal was to add a mid-level addition to the top of the existing rear structure with two bedrooms. Unfortunately the council conditions meant that only one bedroom would work with the required RLs and setbacks and meant the layout had to be reconfigured. The resulting design was sent out to tender and priced by four contractors, however due to the high average cost of works, the loss of the extra bedroom and other client circumstances the project did not move forward. Two years later the client contacted us while they were living overseas, they wanted to move forward although requested we make changes to the existing ground floor configuration. With confirmation from council we confirmed this required a secondary DA which I compiled and lodged prior to my departure from Alchemy.

The proposal included a level change at the wall where the existing weatherboard structure started. This change was required to meet legislative requiredments for sun amenitiy to the neighbours private open space and living room windows. Using sun studies I worked out the maximum height the ground floor projection could start and worked with the director to finalise the layout out for the bathroom, kitchen, living and dining areas. Also shown are details from the tender documenation.

I started this project from the beginning which required me to go on site and conduct and photographic survey of the existing conditions of a small cottage in the Inner West. The client needed more space for their growing family. While waiting for the survey I reviewed all the relevant legislation and wrote up a controls table. Once the survey was received I modelled the existing conditions and created and envelope which worked. Then the director on sketched a few layouts which I modelled and refined ensuring council compliance. We presented the schemes to the client who were impressed with the work. The schemes were then sent to a contractor to provide indicative pricing using a square meter rate.

The clients were quite indecisive which ended in us completing nearly a dozen different options at different price points. One of the issues which made the cost of works high was due to the existing rear addition being on the southern side and the site facing East-West meant that for a compliant upper floor the existing rear addition had to be removed and relocated to the north otherwise shadowing compliance could not be met. I worked hard on the renders in an attempt to get the client across the line. Unfortunately they chose to place the project on hold and potentially find another property with better development potential.

This client approached us through a Planning consultant who we regularly used. The brief was pairing two SEPPs and sought to have a primary dwelling approved through 2008 complying developments and a granny flat which would be rented out via 2009 affordable housing. The client had a previous Architect provide plans however the client was never happy with what they produced. With this in mind the project was to provide high end design using the materials available and preferred by the client. An Arborist had also previously been engaged and provided requested setbacks for all trees located on site. With this information and a strong understanding of the relevant legislation I prepared an envelope for the director to use as a basis for the new proposed layout.

The layout was presented to the client who was very happy with the form and functionality compared to the previous Architects designs, he signed off and we moved forward. Due to the ambitious combination of the application and site being a corner block we proceeded with multiple reviews and discussions on SEPP interpretation. These discussions were happening directly between the client, myself and the certifier. These issues were resolved with the CC issued shortly after.

This project was one of my long running projects and saw three differnt versions through my time. I picked it up very early with the client having been refered to us via a consultant planner. The initial scheme was it leave the existing RFB as is and add a free standing secondary dwelling at the rear. This scheme was lodged to council for a PreDA and unfortunately rejected with councils suggesting all works should be within the existing building. We worked with the planner and lodged a secondary PreDA with a similar layout t0 the plans adjacent although. This was generally accepted by council pending confirmation of existing use rights. shortly after confirmation of the existing use rights covid hit and the project went on hold. Early last year the client was keen to get the project going again. I contacted the planner and council to confirm the list of consultants required and began building a team for the DA.

There were a long list of consultants required for the DA submission. The most important were BCA/Fire and Hydraulic who were needed to confirm compliance for fire and if the existing street water pressure could service the requried hydrauants. Both signed off and the project could continue with me finalising the architectural package and the other consultants supporting reports/assessments. At the point I left the firm the Architectrual package was complete and only waiting on a the planners SEE and Affordable Housing Report.

This project was allocated to me at the very early stages of schematic design. A Sydney football club commissioned Alchemy to commence designs on a new football precinct which they needed to package for a government sporting grants application. Although two grant applications were unsuccessful the new club CEO decided to continue using their own finances. They met with Council to outline their intentions, Council were supportive and provided a list of requirements for a submission. After confirmation of our engagement we began with some design changes as the brief had expanded since the rejected funding bids. These changes were worked through directly between myself, the CEO and facilities manager who later signed off the design. The application was lodged to council for a PreDA and an external planning consultant provided the assessment as the site was a council asset.

Upon further review of the PreDA assessment it became clear that the council had been discussing the project with the wrong team at council. This meant the scope of the project increased and much more work had to be completed in preparation for the DA submission. The layout also saw changes due to their internal miss-communication, this brought on challenges however the issues which had to be worked out were resolved and the DA was lodged. As with projects of this scale objections came through in quantity, although it was nice to see many letters of support from the local community.

BEE HIVE I took over this project when my brother parted ways with the original architect, in the midst of completing my undergraduate at Melbourne University when this happened. I spent a lot of time working on the budget with my brother and the contractor this required simplyfiing the original design which was followed by a section 4.55 (s96).

The original design had a split level first floor and complicated roof form to help maximise ceiling heights, while staying below the max building height for the site. This was going to exceed budget allowances and therefore the decision was made to simplify to a single level and flat roof.

MASTERS THESIS In Sydney, people either love or hate cyclists. The angst towards cyclists is down to a lack of proper cycling infrastructure and a general misunderstanding between cyclists and drivers with regards to safety. Major cities like Amsterdam, Tokyo and London are rapidly developing their cycling infrastructure, as citizens realise this is a healthier, faster and more environmental way of getting around. Sydney has perhaps been slower, but the culture of cycling has been increasing regardless of any hostility present on the road.

THE FUTURE OF CIRCULAR QUAY

This design builds on this culture, providing a new vision for Sydney’s cycling infrastructure. The aim would be to provide cycling ‘hubs’ in key locations throughout the city, linking together a network of cycle ways. Hub locations have been selected using data collected from the activity app Strava (seen on the next page) with the largest hub being Circular Quay. Given this high-density location, the hub is integrated within three new skyscrapers. A dramatic cycling ramp wraps around the buildings, allowing cyclists to access multi-storey facilities – bike shops, storage, change rooms and more - up to the sixth floor, where they are met with spectacular views across the harbour. Beyond this height, the ramp evolves into an elegant shading and daylight reflecting system, protecting interior spaces from the high summer sun, but reflecting light deep into office floors.

As this was the final studio for the Masters degree students were urged to find our own graphic style which would be applied to all our work in the final presentation. This style came about while experimenting with ArchiCADs 3d rendering options. The base drawing was then edited in photoshop to add an element of movement and activity. The ability of showing structure and the depth of a drawn 2 point sectional perspective created a really interesting although highly descriptive drawing.
Longitudinal Section Perspective This section had the ability of showing the ramp in a way other drawings could not.

A crucial aspect of this design was how it connected to Martin Place - arguably one of the most important streets in Sydney, with deep embedded historical significance. The plan was to build a new transport link below and with this comes a large increase in traffic. Drawing inspiration from the work done at Chiefly Square, I wanted to create something with a more welcoming environment. A main goal of this project was to give back to the public realm as the height was slightly over the allowable limit, thus impacting Hyde Park during winter solstice. The multiple public sky gardens were an attempt to give back to the public who can use the space.

A large part of this project was designing around the needs for the underground metro station. This included escalators, access lifts, service lifts, ventilation ducts and other services. The breif stated the building would have a 50 year life span. This informed the simple form along with using an orthogonal design, to fit in with the majority of buildings along Martin Place and also be easily demolished or re-purposed.

ROGERS 31 31
ARCHITECTS & PLANNERS During my 5 months working for Rogers Architects and Planners, a small firm of 6 employees, I assisted on a full range of work from small alterations and additions to large scale residential developments. What I mainly worked on were the drawings for town planning applications. They had recently adopted ArchiCAD as their first piece of BIM software. They had produced a very basic template which I built upon, developing and making it easier for them to publish all drawings necessary for planning applications and feasibility reports.

The aspects of ArchiCAD which I was using here were zones. This helped the firm with the feasibility reports as ArchiCAD produces all this data in a neat table, making it very helpful when meeting with a client who is all about numbers. Another aspect of the template I produced was an expansion on the kit of parts, building new objects and colour palettes. This made it clear for new employees on how they liked their drawings presented. These plans were used for design development and town planning. The second plan is the overlooking diagram which was requested from council after the initial application.

A great tool ArchiCAD offers is the ability to apply colours and textures from materials in the elevations and sections. This was something that I developed for Rogers as I saw it would help the understanding of the design and materiality while the planning department observed it and approved it. .
