NIGHT IN WHITE

BRAINSTORMING OF THE WORD SENSATION Sensation is a process that allows our body to take in information from around the world via five senses. The senses are converted to electrical impulses which travel to and are interpreted by the brain. Sensation occurs thanks to our five sensory systems: vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. Each of these systems maintains unique neural pathways with the brain which allows them to transfer information from the environment to the brain very rapidly. Without sensation we would not be able to visually enjoy a sunny spring day at the park, or the taste of our favourite ice cream. Each sensory system contains unique sensory receptors which are designed to detect specific environmental stimuli. Once detected, sensory receptors convert environmental stimulus energy into electrochemical neural impulses. The brain then interprets those neural messages, which allow the brain to experience and make decisions about the environment. Let's take a little bit closer look at the process of sensation by examining each of the five sensory systems involved

THE COLOUR WHITE I selected the colour white partly because it is my favourite colour but it represents something very delicate, sensitive, cold

The Colour White Represents

“Innocence and purity” : White is the beginning of everything, is a clean colour, that is not muddied is coloured.

“New beginnings” : white represents a clean slate, helping us through times of stress, and allowing us put the past behind us and preparing us to move on.

“Equality and unity” : White represents the positive as well as the negative aspects of all colours. It contains an equal balance of all the colours of the spectrum.

I was inspired by this quote

“White is not a mere absence of colour; it is a shining and affirmative thing, as fierce as red, as definite as black. God paints in many colours; but He never paints so gorgeously, I had almost said so gaudily, as when He paints in white” GK CHESTERTON

TAKING INSPIRATION I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum and found some objects interesting in the contemporary ceramic side nice sculpture.

I also saw some white lace clothes in the wedding Exhibition

1874 England (Clevedon, Somerset), the V&A Museum

SENSITIVE LACE

Lace is defined as a fine open fabric of cotton or silk, made by looping, twisting, or knitting thread in patterns and used especially for trimming garments. Because of these patterns there is a sensation visually and in touch.

FOCUS AND TITLE

Next I wanted to be focused on my moodboard, fabric board and colourboard so I started to work on my sketchbook by using images from the use of lace in history and then more contemporary use of lace.

The choice for my title was not easy to find at beginning but eventually it came to my mind about “MOONLIGHT’’ then ‘’SNOW WHITE’’. Finally I choose “NIGHT IN WHITE’’, I

was partially inspired by the song “NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN” written and performed by

The Moody Blues, which is a very great song which invokes lot of emotion. I used the melody of this song to inspire me, which is why I selected the title “Night in White”.

There can’t be more of a contrast of colours, white and the blackness of night. If

anything night makes white look even more sensitive and fragile. Other colours get swallowed up by the hunger of night, white is one of the only bright colours to remain.

WORK WORK WORK I worked on the stand with paper from my research using a photograph what inspired me called “shapes’’.

“Shapes”

I found that the process was a creative one as I was focused on one side the photography, as well as drawing different parts which was particularly interesting.

I did some draping with paper on the stand, then photograph them and later I worked with that shape on a calico fabric and I drew from a composition of different fabric made by Justine. When I worked on my pattern I wanted to do a dress with lace draping in the neck. To do my pattern was a bit difficult because I chose volume, I wanted my sleeves to look big but I managed it in the end. I am quietly satisfied with my twill, I changed the length of the dress, I didn’t manage my time today as I thought I would do two twill of my trouser but it was not possible. After class I planned to go to Shepherds Bush Market to find samples for dress. I selected samples of scuba, which I thought would be will be a good idea as it is quite thick fabric. Working on my sketchbook using white was not always easy and for Monday I needed a proposed line up I will try to do some. When I started my first twill the first outfit I did was a dress with volume, with big sleeves and body shape. Near the neck I wanted to put drap but I thought chiffon would be great and I wanted to frame the end I did a quick line up of my outfit but I was not quite sure just to have an idea. Doing my line up wasn’t easy because of the white colour so I selected a black skin to give a nice tone of my garment and accessories, I put heeled shoes.

MY SAMPLE LINE UP My sample line up took me a lot of time to complete. The next step was to start with my dress twill. The block I used was a dress bodies block. Here is my sample line up

My Sample Line Up

Size 8 Twill

I was satisfied with the shape and the volume of the sleeves. Then I began to think about how to connect the draping in front of my dress and I had to work out which soft fabric related to lace I could use, so I did some experiments with chiffon fabric, however it was a bit hard to work with and slipy to sew with.

The same day I managed to do my second pattern which is a coat and I was inspired by the soft geometric silhouette of “Min Kim 3D circular shape.

Back of my coat when I will do with real fabric I will put two different white fabric scuba and new print. I still need four garments for my coat I may put a top under and trouser and for skirt and top. I went to Shepherds Bush and I found an interesting fabric that I wanted to use, called “scuba’’. By the metre the cost was 9 pounds. I liked the fabric sensation and it felt very delicate, even though its a strong fabric. I took some samples that I was going to try work on it see if is easy to saw with that. However for the shape I want, “volume”, it would be great the fabric is a bit thick. I showed the fabric to Justine she agree with that now I can start my first garment. I am starting now with my real garment ‘’The dress’’ cut the fabric was a bit difficult because the fabric is thick and a bit slippy so I was very careful to cut it I use 1m 30 to do my dress size 8. On the fabric I will dispose four coupons ‘’the front of my dress where I did some modifications, the back at the beginning I wanted to put zip or button but I realise that with scuba is not easy to insert it I will do an open back, also the two big sleeve. I did overlock my fabric but in the end I didn’t need to do that. I felt a bit tired that day so I planned to sew all my piece together but I continued my sewing at home.

Next I sewed my front and back together, then the hard part was the sleeves, but I put many darts to simplify my work and saw my the sleeves easily. I finished my sewing a bit late, and going back to my inspiration in the beginning I am thinking what I can put in front and how I can explain my draping idea I start by cutting some chiffon fabric and working on my stand why not use some framing and satisfy with this idea. The next day I was thinking which garment I can do day is going very quick and we have a deadline soon I am stressing and I am doing my top and skirt pattern and try to do on the real fabric.

fig2: My top and skirt pattern I used a size 8 for my top and size 8 too for the skirt on the skirt. I put a waistband and zip at the side.

THE PHOTOSHOOT I planned my photoshoot with Linda. I needed to decide where I could do my shoot and also find three models to wear my garment : the dress, the coat and trouser, and the skirt and top. For my place I want somewhere simple and a bit dark like a small road. I walk today to Saint Giles church off Tottenham Court Road and found a small street quiet very interesting. This street is “Flitcroft st’’

I was planning to do my photo shoot in a studio but I talked to Linda the photographer and she prefered the outdoors for photo shoots. Also as the studio was 20 pounds an hour, it seemed sensible to follow Linda’s advice.

The day of my photoshoot was nice the weather was a little windy though, but not too much. I felt that the photoshoot was a success for me in terms of the location I selected and photos taken. I am very glad to choose that area so we start shooting the dress. I was motivated where we wanted to shoot there were some nice vision of wooden beams in front of a company building so I had to ask the permission before shooting. On asking the manager was pleased for us to shoot. When we finished to shoot the dress next I did the skirt and top. It was a bit windy and the frame I put at the top end and the skirt was like moving nicely, as well as the coat and trouser.

Finally I shot all of the garments. It took almost an hour for the shoot in total. The selection of the location was good as the street was very quiet with not a lot of people passing around.

I am happy with my work. When i started the project i did not know what to make and where this project would bring me. My fabric choice was great and the design of my garment represented the season autumn / winter. I am looking forward to see how my photoshoot will look like.

MY FINAL LINE UP It took me a long time to do my final line up.i used dark skin just because of my garment to make my color white more intense . The three outfits in the line up were shown from the front and back.the dress with the organza dropping and framing at the end, the skirt and top made with different white fabric ‘’new print and scuba, and finally

the coat and trouser . I am pleased with my line up when i start this course i didn't know anything about photoshoot and illustration to draw a person was a hard work for me and challenging but i download the files photoshoot and illustration at home i try to practice and now i found my drawing getting better and better a lot of patience , i learn also before do something you need to like or have a passion for the things then you will find yourself perfection. the next step is to do the flat drawing for each garment and my 100 development drawing on illustrations where i will do 20 drawings of each garment but its will a bit difficult to represent the framing on the top and skirt but im going to try. I found the project very interesting and creative and very challenging also the first thing found difficult at beginning of this project was to find images reflecting my inspiration about‘’the volume’’ and also find a title appropriate for this project .

But i find the topic ‘’sensation’’ very instructive and delicate subject and i learn many things about ‘’Lace’’ suddenly, is everywhere. Looking nothing like your grandmother's doilies, lace is the fabric of whole dresses and suits for summer,Lace hasn't been this popular since Queen Victoria sat on the throne. The lavish lace is a dramatic change not only for high fashion but also for a European industry that has been dwindling since the 1920s. Europe was once famous for lace hundreds of types of Swiss, Belgian, French and at one point even English lace. Now, much of the lace shown on high-end runways comes from one town in northeastern France. I enjoy writing my journey work ‘’PAD’’ every end of the day i was taking at least 20min to enumerate what i have been doing in the day . i also learn from my mistake like doing a toile before doing the real garment is very important and always mention a duet on a pattern and on the fabric. When i start this course i didn't like to sew a sleeve but is one of my favourite bit in a garment i enjoy do . The teachers were very helpful and they were very truthfully for each mistake i did . Every deadline was so short like my garment i did all in 2weeks and working at home was taff for me because of my 7months baby when i was trying to focus on my work my daughter was disturbing , but i tried to stay strong and give all my best by finishing the garment and do all the work ask . Im proud of myself because i cope with this course and tried to attend the course to dont be late or tried to be on the same step as the other.
