The Original Farmers Market: the place to meet for 88 years
BY ERIKA THOMASFor years, the cheerful greetings of “Hi” and “Good to see you” in a sunny Irish dialect could have been heard on any given afternoon from behind the counter at Magee’s House of Nuts at LA’s Original Farmers Market. The infectious salutations came from Doris Perez, who had been serving customers for over 50 years and just retired last year. “I came here from Ireland in 1959 with the plan to stay for one year.” Perez (formerly Leach) said, “I liked it so much that I just never left.”
Long before the scads of retail stores, restaurants and parking structures, before CBS Television City and before the luxury shopping metropolis known as the Grove, LA’s Original Farmers Market was the site of Arthur Gilmore’s 256-acre dairy farm.
Gilmore, who had been looking to expand his farm, knew he would first need to provide more water for his livestock. While drilling for water one afternoon, the farmer struck oil and, in an instant, he was rich. Cows were replaced by oil derricks, which would continue to harvest oil, though city officials would soon tell Gilmore the intrusive rigs would no longer be permitted. Gilmore vacated the property for his next venture, a sports venue he would name Gilmore Stadium.
His land would sit empty until a group of farmers decided to make use of it. Parking their produce-filled trucks on the deserted tract in the summer of 1934, they sold their goods to locals — mainly housewives — and offered vegetables, fruit
“TODAY, THE ORIGINAL FARMERS MARKET CONTINUES TO ENJOY A BUSTLING EXISTENCE AND REMAINS ONE OF LA’S MOST POPULAR PLACES FOR LOCALS AND TOURISTS.”
“IN JUST OVER A DECADE, THE FARMERS MARKET HAD BECOME THE GOTO SPOT FOR LA’S FRESHEST PRODUCE AND DELICIOUS EATS.”
and other locally produced items. By October, only a few months after opening, merchants had built and moved into permanent stalls. Soon more sellers joined them and the list of offerings grew, boasting everything from meat and sausage to pie, candy and ice cream. The famed clock tower went up in 1948, making the corner of Third and Fairfax an official landmark.
In just over a decade, the Farmers Market had become the go-to spot for LA’s freshest produce and delicious eats. CBS Television City opened next door in 1952 (Gilmore Stadium was demolished to make room for it) bringing an influx of celebrities,
not to mention giddy tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of one. The Farmers Market soon became a place movie stars were known to frequent, and studios often used it as the backdrop to shoot up-and-coming starlets’ publicity photos. Marilyn Monroe was even named “Miss Cheesecake of 1953” by Michael’s Cheesecake, where she was photographed cutting into one of the fluffy confections wearing a chef’s hat and an evening gown.
The Farmers Market seemed to enjoy a never-ending heyday for decades until the 1990s, when its popularity began to wane and business declined significantly. “Things really started to slow down and a lot of the vendors were struggling. So it really helped us when The Grove came along,” Perez said.
Today, the Original Farmers Market enjoys a bustling existence and remains one of LA’s most popular places for locals and tourists. Before retirement, when asked what Perez liked most about working at Farmers Market, she had said, “Just meeting people — all kinds of different people. I’ve gotten to know so many of them over the years. And the Market has the best atmosphere. It’s a great place to come.” g

Have a long weekend and looking to discover a hidden treasure?
Consider a trip to Oxnard, once referred to as “Hollywood by the Sea” for its notoriety as an escape for cinema’s biggest stars during the Golden Age of filmmaking. Just north of Malibu, where PCH and the 101 intersect, this coastal city is welcoming for families and travel adventurers alike. Home to the California Strawberry Festival and backdrop to many a music video, commercial and movie scene, Oxnard is full of year-round beauty and unexpected surprises.
Brittney Hendricks, vice president of marketing and communications for Visit Oxnard, invites sightseers to come explore.
“We’re a welcoming, approachable, downto-earth city,” she said. “People are surprised when they come to Oxnard. We like to say we’re more than a pretty name.”
Follow her itinerary to see how a long weekend in winter might unfold.
DAY ONE
Make the most of the weekend with an early start on Friday. Catch a ride on Amtrak’s Pacific Sunliner from one of the many departure destinations throughout Southern California for a short ride up the coast. Arrival at the muraled train platform at the Oxnard Transit Center makes for a perfect introduction to the quirky beauty throughout the city. These days, the temperature hovers between 47 and 66 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and is known to have moderate temperatures year-round.
With a weekend planned full of activities, packing light might not be an option, but don’t worry — the bellhop at Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach, which just reopened in October after a $40-million renovation, will hold the bags until check-in. As the only all-suite beachfront resort on Mandalay Beach, it was hand-selected for its unique character to be a part of the Hilton Curio Collection. With views of the beach, garden and pool, each suite is equally charming and relaxing for a weekend getaway.
For lunch, take your pick from one of the many amazing taco trucks, taquerias and restaurants participating in the “Oxnard Taco Trail” mobile pass — visitors checking in and tasting fare at a minimum of 15 locations will be proud winners of an “I conquered the Oxnard Taco Trail” T-shirt. Not sure where to start? Try Cabo Seafood Grill and Cantina for their fresh handmade tortillas and tableside guacamole.
Fueled by cilantro and salsa, head off for a little tours de concours. Oxnard is home to two car museums. The Murphy Auto Museum is a true vintage Americana delight hosting more than 60 classic cars and a not-to-be-missed DIECAST Hot Wheels Collection. And Mullin Automotive Museum, home to the “Mona Lisa of Cars,” boasts a powder blue Bugatti thought to be one of the most valuable cars in the world. As legend has it, a Saudi prince offered the owner $250 million, and the owner turned the prince down! >>
There are very few things more soothing than a sunset on the beach, so take a stroll on the dunes before dinner to work up an appetite.
Oxnard is home to many incredible restaurants, so foodies of all persuasions will have their pick. Ox and Ocean, Zarachi Dunes’ latest restaurant offering, is one of the newest in town. In true Oxnard style, the venue has leaned into its namesake, with the entire place exploding with oxen decor and detail. Consider s’mores at Dunes Pyre, the on-resort fire pit before a good night’s sleep to the sound of the waves.
DAY TWO
Saturdays are for explorers, so get an early start to fit in all the fun. Nearby Channel Island Harbor is home to the embarkation station for Island Packers Cruises.
Depending on the time of the year, visitors to the fiveisland park can visit sea caves, try ocean kayaking, spot the 30,000 seals that congregate at Point Bennett, making it one of the largest concentrations of wildlife on earth, and sea lions living on San Miguel Island, or navigate
“the cellar has the largest portfolio of kosher wines in the world and a fully kosher menu.”
Channel Island’s National Marine Sanctuary, home to a third of California’s kelp forests. January through March is also prime whale watching season.
“A lot of whales migrate through the channel — you’re almost certain to see one,” Hendricks said. “Oxnard is the gateway to the Channel Island National Park, which some people call the Galapagos of North America for the diversity of the wildlife you can’t find anywhere else.”
For a late lunch or afternoon snack, try quesa birria tacos from Juarez Tacos or another location on the Taco Trail — no matter what you choose, you can’t go wrong.
After a rest or a short siesta, make your way back to the Channel Islands Harbor for one of Oxnard’s hidden gems: an authentic Venetian gondola ride. Gondola Paradiso gives private gondola boat rides along the canals around Coral Island. Time it for the sunset and bring snacks or even a bottle of Chianti for the ultimate romantic ride as the gondoliers sing as they glide you across the water, stopping at Seabridge bridges, which are like Venetian mistletoe encouraging passengers to kiss.
Oxnard doesn’t disappoint with dinner options. If you’re feeling nostalgic, make your way to Heritage Square for a Prohibition-era craft cocktail from 1901 Speakeasy, then head to Tierra Sur located within the Herzog Wine Cellars. ZAGAT called it “a foodie paradise,” with mouthwatering menu choices like Spanish ahi tartar with marinated beet, caramelized leek, and pomegranate and sunflower seeds or a flat iron steak with truffle béarnaise, wild mushroom and shallot demi.
“The original owner of the winery was a winemaker to the emperor of Austria-Hungary,” Hendricks said. “Today, the cellar has the largest portfolio of kosher wines in the world and a fully kosher menu.”
Zachari Dunes has the perfect alfresco terrace for afterdinner drinks followed by a quick soak in the outdoor hot tub and another great night’s sleep. >>
DAY THREE
One day left, but still so much to do. Henry’s Sundries and Gear Rental in the lobby of Zachari Dunes offers games, stand-up paddleboards, surfboards and body boards. There are also bike rental spots, including Wheel Fun Rentals, which has a rental station at the beach-access gate between Zachari Dunes and Mandalay Beach to enjoy a cruise down the Pacific Coast Bike Route that runs through Oxnard.
As you explore Oxnard, you'll see why “Hollywood by the sea” fits so well. “You’ll notice much of the city’s Golden Era film heritage in the street names — La Brea, Tujunga, Hollywood,” Hendricks noted.
Over the years, many celebrities have visited or made Oxnard home including Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, and Sonny and Cher Anderson .Paak is originally from Oxnard and named his Grammy-winning album “Oxnard” with tracks paying homage to the town like “Saviers Road.” While Dr. Dre never lived in Oxnard, he did film his Pepsi Super Bowl halftime commercial here. Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters lived in Oxnard Shores for a bit, and John Wayne and Rudolph Valentino once each had vacation homes. In the ’60s, Oxnard’s beautiful beaches were split in the middle for the development of the Channel Islands Harbor. The result? The North Side was named Hollywood Beach, and the south side of the harbor “Silver Strand” after the silver screen.
Late morning, before checkout, sit on the dunes for a bit to watch a few late morning surfers. “We have seven miles of beaches and a huge surf culture,” Hendricks said. “The waves at one of our beaches are considered extremely advanced; they break in such a way that the waves curl similar to those at Bonzai Pipeline in Hawaii, and a lot of professional surfers surf there.”
The Surfliner has several different departure times throughout the day, so if adventure is still calling, grab one last lunch at The Haven at White Sails. This Caribbean-meetsFilipino vegan restaurant serves up bucket list worthy eats.
Even though the weekend is over, there is still much to explore. So, if a few extra days can’t be on the agenda, there’s much to see when the next visit rolls around. Because, as the Visit Oxnard website notes, from festivals to breathtaking beach views, and cinematic history at every corner, “Oxnard Is California cool, panorama-perfect, culturally authentic and vibrant beyond measure.” g

RV Share Unroughing It
BY LYNDA GOROVThe stove is so sleek, the beds so inviting, the lighting so lovely, that we almost never want to leave our vacation quarters.
That’s good — and bad.
Good because the RV rental (think Airbnb studio apartment on massive wheels) has literally all the amenities of home and then some. Bad because it’s parked on California’s central coast, where there is way too much to do ocean-wise, nature-wise and restaurant-wise, never mind all the wineries along the way. >>
“RVSHARE, WHICH BILLS ITSELF AS ‘THE WORLD’S FIRST AND LARGEST PEERTOPEER RV RENTAL MARKETPLACE,’ CONNECTS GUESTS TO HOSTS WHO CAN PROVIDE ‘ROOMS’ THAT RANGE FROM TINY TEARDROP CAMPERS YOU TOW BEHIND YOUR CAR TO MOTOR COACHES RESEMBLING A ROCK STAR’S TOUR BUS.”
We’re psyched about the fireplace, full-size fridge, wide-screen TV, picnic table and barbecue. Did I mention central heat and air? Even the dog is torn between staying put and exploring camp grounds that include a swimming pool, general store and hiking trails that go up into the hills and down toward the water.
High-end RV rentals are not new but they are gaining in popularity: less work than pitching a tent, no stinky outhouses or holes in the ground, typically more affordable than hotel rooms for a family of four or five, which is what ours would easily accommodate.
Think of it as camping with a “kinda” built in. You get the feel of roughing it without the risk of being eaten alive by bugs. You can dress up the experience (and go out on the town) or dress it down by sticking close to camp (and making s’mores). We do both.
Our camper (a term I use loosely) was parked at Ocean Mesa RV Resort in Goleta, an easy walk to the Pacific Ocean and an easy drive to Santa Barbara and beyond. To be honest, this one is a media model owned by RVshare, an Akron, Ohio, company whose slogan is “Use Your Outside Voice.”
RVshare, which bills itself as “the world’s first and largest peer-to-peer RV rental marketplace,” connects guests to hosts who can provide “rooms” that range from tiny teardrop campers
you tow behind your car to motor coaches resembling a rock star’s tour bus. You can pick them up or, even better, some owners will drop them in the campground of your choosing.
Ours is like a little hotel in a nature setting, which suits urban us just fine. (RVshare CEO Jon Gray said more and more customers are city folks who want to get out in nature but also avoid sleeping on the ground.)
For us, the RV allows us to be lazy and outdoorsy but also get things done.
This means hiking and biking, a bit of cooking in the gleaming kitchenette (pantry larger than the one at home) and, more than that, checking out local restaurants. Oh, and shopping, which we do in affluent Santa Barbara’s Spanish-style downtown and a short ride away in even posher Montecito, where, sadly, we do not spot the duke and duchess of Sussex (Harry and Meghan), although I later learn that she shopped at the same women’s clothing store as us, so there’s that. (Between RVs and ridiculously expensive T-shirts, I’m such a trendsetter.)
We’ve got four days to cram in what we can, and also stare at the stars. The pressure to relax is on.
First up is Ellwood Mesa, a series of unimproved yet gorgeous trails and dirt roads along the coastline about 20 minutes from where we are staying (in California almost everything is measured in minutes rather than miles). It’s a place for walkers, runners, hikers and horseback riders. You can bird-watch or people watch. We happily lose hours to our meandering.
Then there’s tandem kayaking, which is a lot of work when the pair of you don’t crack 200 pounds. Suffice it to say, we’re not the best in the group, which includes a family of pasty Brits, so that’s saying something. It’s a bit cloudy and cool for a guided tour of the Gaviota Coast, but the two young women from Santa Barbara Adventure Company are fun, funny, knowledgeable and happy to give us a tow when we fall too far behind. (No one mentions when I unexpectedly upchuck over the side of the kayak and I probably shouldn’t, either.) >>
Our final planned experience that doesn’t involve alcohol, carbs or icing is the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, a 30-minute or so drive from camp where tickets run from $10 to $18 per person. In truth, it isn’t so much a garden as a native plant adventure (meadow, desert, wooded dell, nursery) splayed across five miles of easy trails. Another plus: some of the best peanut brittle ever at the gift shop.
Here it must be noted that we live in Southern California, get to the central coast fairly often, and had already visited many of the mainstays of vacationers to the area: the Santa Barbara Zoo, the fishing pier and sand at Goleta Beach Park, and the labyrinth on Lagoon Island. Plus about a million other things the area is known for in addition to the temperate weather.
Ditto higher-end restaurants and wine tasting rooms. Too many to mention, and truly something for everyone. They don’t call it California cuisine for nothing.
That said, some tasty dishes more in line with camping prices were had in Goleta at Kyle’s Kitchen (salads and large fries; don’t judge); Ca’Dario (salad and two takeout pizzas eaten at the RV’s kitchen booth); and Dean Coffee Shop (lattes, iced tres leches, and delicious hipster sandwiches homemade with smashed beans and avocado); as well as Savoy Cafe & Deli in
Santa Barbara (where we stuffed our faces with mix-and-match platters); and Corktree Cellars in Carpinteria (wowser on the artichoke dip, happy hour tacos and, yes, fries; remember what we said about judging).
With all the walking, rowing and restful sleeping (so, so quiet in the campgrounds once night settles in), we didn’t even gain weight despite all our eating. But that would have been OK, too. When you’re going upscale downscale, you should be ready for anything except ever having to roll out a sleeping bag and worry about bears. g

Stylish Menus Served in Casual Fashion
BY MONIQUE REIDYTODAY’S FOODIES WANT FLAVOR WITHOUT FUSS. OUR HECTIC LIFESTYLES RARELY ACCOMMODATE A STUFFY RESTAURANT ENVIRONMENT THAT REQUIRES STILETTOS AND SEQUINS. BUT WHILE AN EASYGOING DINING EXPERIENCE MIGHT MEAN THE SETTING IS LESS FORMAL, THE QUALITY OF THE MENU AND THE SERVICE OF THE STAFF SHOULD NEVER RELAX. HERE ARE TWO EATERIES THAT OFFER A COMFORTABLE AMBIANCE COUPLED WITH SUPERB MENU OPTIONS.
t Loews Hollywood Hotel may be best known as the lodging site for the movie industry’s elite during the Academy Awards, but the star of the show at the Loews Hollywood property is its lobby bar.
H2 Kitchen & Bar, which is named for its home at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, is conveniently located near the entrance to the hotel.
However, H2’s menu is unlike most lobby bars. First off, the food is fresh, made-to-order and tasty. The menu, under the direction of Executive Chef Charly Houegban, features unique dishes such as Bao Bun Trio (smoked pork belly, al pastor, pork asado, Korean pepper sauce); Yellowfin Ahi Tuna Ceviche; Crispy Whiskey Honey Chicken Sandwich; and a Greenhouse Artisan Salad.
The desserts take the cake as the most creative concoctions on the menu. The Chocolate Experience is a decadent combination of
chocolate mousse, chocolate rum sauce, sweet cream and chocolate macaron. The Trifle contains crystalized sugar brioche, Bavarian Crème and tres leches cream, while the Tempered features cinnamon coffee crumble cake, coffee buttercream, toffee ganache and a duo of coffee and espresso gelato.
The cocktail menu consists of delicious blends named after Southern California landmarks. The Cahuenga & Selma is a mix of Mitcher's Whiskey, amaro, demerara and orange bitters, and the Sunset & Vine fuses Deep Eddy Grapefruit Vodka, lime and Campari. Wines, beers, seltzers and soft drinks are also available.
H2 Kitchen & Bar is a popular place to meet friends for a drink or a casual dinner, and since nearly every outing in the LA region involves a meal, it’s a convenient spot to pick up food on the way to Griffith Park or the Hollywood Bowl.
SAVIDA
t Montana Avenue, Santa Monica’s upscale hot spot, is famous for its 10 city blocks of boutiques, cafes and art galleries. It’s also the new home of Savida, a dining concept that features ingredients so crisp, they seem to glow on the plate (they are so fresh, they are almost fluorescent).
Dan Smulovitz, Savida owner and executive chef, can usually be found behind the fresh seafood bar greeting diners and chatting with locals who stop in to say hello. His Israeli roots are clearly detected through his gracious nature and his desire to be sure every guest is well-fed. Operating from an 80-square-foot kitchen is not a limitation — it’s the ideal amount of space Chef Dan needs to formulate his menu magic.
In addition to the artistry of each presentation, there are two common elements in every recipe at Savida: the ingredients must be
organic as well as pristine. Starters include, Fresh Uni and Burrata & Black Truffle. The Crab Salad consists of avocado, grapefruit and baby gem with a lemon poppy seed vinaigrette. The Tuna Shawarma contains salata mashwiha, sumac pickled onion, tahini amba sauce, parsley and pine nuts.
Other menu faves include the Tuna Taco, the Bread and Seaweed Butter and the Salmon Tartar. The non-alcoholic Mellow Mule and the Paloma Daydream are refreshing beverages that nicely complement the meal.
Have a seat indoors or out, and enjoy people-watching along Montana Avenue as you graze on delectable handmade food, and chat with Chef Dan about his fascinating life. A plan guaranteed to provide a gratifying and delicious dining experience.
The Beverly Hilton
Historic Hotel Draped in Hollywood Elegance
BY MONIQUE REIDYAMONG THE WELLKNOWN LANDMARKS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, ICONIC HOTELS ARE SOME OF THE MOST RECOGNIZED. THE BEVERLY HILTON, A MONUMENT ON WILSHIRE BOULEVARD IN THE OPULENT CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS, HAS HAD AN ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY SINCE IT OPENED IN 1955.
Distinctive since its inception, The Beverly Hilton is a historic destination that has accommodated Hollywood legends like Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. It’s still a movie industry hot spot today, and it’s not uncommon to find A-listers in the lobby or at one of the property’s restaurants.
The hotel's International Ballroom has hosted the annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony since 1961 and has been the location choice for the Oscar Nominee Luncheon, the prestigious Milken Institute’s Global Conference, and a variety of red carpet events.
The hotel’s history stretches more than three quarters of a century. Conrad Hilton originally created The Beverly Hilton in the mid-fifties as a showpiece. Merv Griffin purchased the hotel for $100.2 million in December 1987, and in 2003 sold it for $130 million to Oasis West Realty. However, Hilton Hotels has maintained management of The Beverly Hilton since it first opened.
When the property went through a $35 million renovation in 2020, the designers revived the decor, but retained its sophisticated mid-century style. The gold- and neutral-toned furnishings in the lobby reflect the Hollywood chic motif of yesteryear yet the vibe is modern and minimalistic.
There are 24 meeting and banquet rooms on the property, an outdoor Oasis Courtyard, three ballrooms, meticulously manicured gardens, and oversized outdoor spaces for weddings and special events. The gift shop features everything from logoed souvenirs to posh pool attire for outfitting guests when they visit the hotel’s famous swimming pool.
The Aqua Star Pool has been enjoyed by some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Angelina Jolie who took a dip in it after winning her second Golden Globe. There is poolside food and drink service, and daybeds are available to rent for a more elevated experience.
Adjacent to the pool is the 6,000-square-foot, Upgrade Labs, a wellness center that offers high-tech experiences such as cryotherapy, a whole-body vibration plate, and infrared and ozone saunas. There is a state-of-the-art fitness center, a full-service hair salon, and a luxurious spa to pamper skin and sore muscles.
With a total of 566 guestrooms, visitors have an option to stay in any of three areas depending on accommodation preferences: The Wilshire Tower Rooms and Suites, The Oasis Building or Poolside Cabanas. >>

Rooms in The Wilshire Tower feature contemporary decor, floor-to-ceiling windows and terraces that offer spectacular views of Beverly Hills. The Oasis building offers 181 rooms adorned in midcentury furnishings and a large shared outdoor garden with an artistic fountain. Poolside Cabanas are 36 rooms that encircle the Aqua Star Pool and offer a laid-back, resort experience.
Bordering the pool, Circa 55, named for the year in which The Beverly Hilton was built, is the hotel’s casual eatery that features breakfast,

lunch and dinner and a fabulous Sunday Brunch. Sant’olina restaurant sits at the hotel’s rooftop and features outdoor dining, a Mediterranean menu, breathtaking views of the Hollywood Hills and full bar.
Perhaps the most notable feature of The Beverly Hilton is the duration of time that much of the staff has served at the hotel. Valeri Young, who has worked in the marketing office for five years, said the team is like family.
“We have a bartender who’s been here for 45 years, a doorman for 40 and people in nearly every department for more than 20 years,” she said. “It’s a wonderful place to be, even if it’s where you work.”
The Beverly Hilton is a magical property that has it all — luxury, history, celebrity and, most of all, impeccable service. It’s an experience worth a visit and is especially suited for SoCal locals looking for an ideal staycation. g

Michael Cimarusti’s Michelin-starred Providence, on a busy street in the heart of Hollywood, has always been the subject of praise and sustainability in culinary and environmental circles. But the latest buzz around the elegant seafood restaurant is the approximately 100,000 gentle honeybees that call the restaurant’s urban rooftop garden home.
With the help of Robin Jones, garden designer and curator of Honey Girl Grows, Providence installed two Italian honeybee hives with re-hived locally removed colonies in April of this year. Unlike raising new populations, re-hiving an already existing honeybee colony that you might find in your loft, attic, garage or underground DWP meters doesn’t pose any threat to available food for other pollinators. After re-hiving, Providence’s colonies were requeened with docile Italian DNA from a queen bee breeder to assure the genetics were less defensive.
“We pick specific breeds of queens that will lay eggs of bees that are docile with a less defensive DNA, so we’ve added friendly bees into the neighborhood,” Jones told LA Weekly, as she and Chef de Cuisine Tristan Aitchison inspected the stacked boxes of bees.
“We take hives that have been rescued locally and bring them up here with other native species so that there’s food for everybody, supporting the whole ecosystem,” she said. “It’s all organic; the nectar is the carbohydrate that becomes honey and the pollen is the protein of the hive. The Providence honey is from the local neighborhood and made from the plants and trees that grow near here.”
“Providence’s rooftop-sourced honey has a floral flavor profile that is slightly less sweet than most.”
The bees, which have a five-week life span, pollinate and collect nectar within a four-mile urban area that includes the fruit- and flower-filled neighborhood of Hancock Park, with about 10 million surrounding flowers, shrubs and trees in their ecosystem. In fact, they don’t even venture as far as the Hollywood Hills to the east.
“When you see a cluster of bees without a hive, it is in a heartshaped form, which they recreate in these boxes as well,” Jones explained. “They build from the bottom to the top; and as they fill the boxes, we divide the boxes by frames to make it easier for the beekeeper to check on their health and wellness, and see what they’re bringing in and their nutrition and growth. The older bees are on the bottom because that’s where the babies are. That’s where the forager bees that you see in your garden come in carrying their nectar and bring it to the young blind bees, and they transfer it in a very tonguey process that looks like a French kiss.”
The nectar gets transferred into the wax cell that is the honeycomb.
“Providence’s rooftop-sourced honey has a floral flavor profile that is slightly less sweet than most,” Aitchison, who spearheaded the rooftop ecosystem, said. “We harvested five gallons in August and have used it in the reserve Tableside Japanese Penicillin cocktail and in its purest form as an accompaniment to post-dinner tea service.” g

In stark contrast, the rainforest, located at Chagres National Park at the northern half of Panama, is a visually majestic and tranquil tropical space. It’s a luxurious terrain consisting of 1,185 species of plants, 130 of which are unique to the region. Soberania National Park is a biodiverse rainforest located 45 minutes outside of Panama City.
For culture buffs, Panama holds many of the colonial relics in this part of the world, like the burial grounds of an ancient civilization, remnants of the first European settlement in the Pacific, as well as the oldest Spanish fort. Panama Carnival, which is held over a four-day period prior to the Catholic date of Ash Wednesday, is one of the most celebrated local events for all Panamanians.
The country’s North American, Spanish and
African influences are reflected in the lifestyle and customs of the Panamanian people. Those influences can also be detected in the crafts and handmade goods as well as the annual festivals celebrated.
A visit to Panama is incomplete without a stop at the Panama Canal. Originally built to decrease travel time for ships between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, it is truly fascinating to observe the lock system that lift ships 85 feet above sea level. Visitors can witness the process that freight ships, cruise ships and yachts employ from an observation deck at Miraflores.
Panama is a true geographic gem not to be missed. And now it’s easier than ever to arrange a visit since Copa Airlines launched a Stopover Program to facilitate a Panamanian excursion. g

Book your flight directly at copa.com through the ConnectMiles Service Center or through a travel agency. Thompson Zihuatanejo
Haven on the Costa Grande of Guerrero, Mexico
PICTURE A RESORT SO SERENE THAT AS YOU APPROACH ITS PALAPAS CROWNED LOBBY ALL THAT CAN BE HEARD ARE TWEETS FROM A BIRD YOU CAN’T IDENTIFY. AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE PROPERTY, PASSING PONDS, SWAYING PALMS AND GIANT WHITE BUTTERFLIES , YOU ARRIVE AT A PRISTINE BEACH WITH A TURQUOISE SHORELINE THAT RIPPLES ACROSS SOFT WHITE SAND.
Welcome to the Thompson Zihuatenejo.
Over the past few decades, Zihuatenejo (or Zihua as it’s fondly called) has evolved from a simple fishing town to the desirable haven it is today. If the name sounds familiar, it was mentioned in the 1994 movie “The Shawshank Redemption” as the final spot of paradise (and freedom). As the fourth largest city in the state of Guerrero and the third most visited region in Mexico, Zihua grew in popularity as its bordering town, Ixtapa, was developing into a lively tourism destination. But unlike its neighbor, Zihua still remains a small community with residential villages and a central market (El Centro). And, of course, fishing is still the favorite sport for locals.
The city’s landscape is lush, displaying varying hues of green on the hills that roll across town. There’s a strong tropical vibe with coconut trees that wave against the skyline. And the climate year-round is balmy with occasional salty sea breezes that brush against the foliage.
Playa la Ropa, perhaps the best-known beach in Zihua, is flanked with open-air restaurants, residential condo units and the luxurious Thompson Zihuatenejo Beach Resort.
The property features 56 seaside rooms and suites, many with ocean views, plunge pools and stylish midcentury furnishings. The decor features artifacts created by local artisans, Oaxacan clay light fixtures, Mexican artwork and a spacious layout.
The pet-friendly hotel features a beautiful pool, fitness center, tennis courts, a full-service spa and two restaurants, both under the direction of Executive Chef Javier Garcia Cerrillo who has worked across the globe. >>
Hao, located on the sand with a spectacular ocean view, features casual dining. Accommodating staff greet guests and are ready to serve up traditional as well as contemporary Mexican dishes using locally sourced ingredients. The breakfast menu offers a range of tropical fruit bowls, Red Velvet Pancakes, Avocado-baked Eggs, and a variety of omelets. Lunch consists of the Crudo of the Day, Vegan Roll, Sustainable Salmon Trout Bowl and Shrimp Empanadas. Dinner features Garlic Mojo Shrimp, Grilled Cheese Rib-eye Tacos and local Spiny Lobster. Hotel guests who wish to laze at the pool or along the seashore can order food and drinks from Hao, and the order will be delivered — so there’s no need to get off that relaxing lounger.
Ceniza, a more upscale dining experience also located beachfront, opens nightly at 6:30 p.m. Here, the attentive staff recommends fresh dishes like Scallop & Spiny Lobster Empanadas, Local Bonita Tartare, Grilled Local Oysters, Bone-Marrow Charred Octopus. Desserts, like the Woodfire-baked Plantain, Cacao Tamale and Lemongrass Crème are not to be missed. Ceniza, which sits under a palmthatched palapa, provides a tranquil ambiance as guests enjoy watching the ocean, just a few feet away.
A highlight in addition to the on-site delicious restaurants allows food enthusiasts to schedule a private cooking class with Chef Javier as he demonstrates how he creates his delectable dishes using the herbs and vegetables grown on the property. He can also take guests on a tour of the local village markets where he teaches about the selection of fresh seafood at the Paseo del Pescador.
While there is plenty to do on property, such as paddleboarding, surfing, walking along the shoreline and tequila tasting, the concierge can also arrange an expedition of the surrounding areas, including Ixtapa. This can be enjoyed on a private boat or sailing cruise on the bay, or as a guided city tour by car. By touring the villages, travelers can grasp the local culture, learn historical features and traditions about the area and, of course, shop. Make sure the outing
includes a visit to Playa Linda to check out the estuary that is home to various iguanas and crocodiles for a unique viewing opportunity.
With all it has to offer, Zihua is a remarkable getaway that can capture the heart of any visitor. It’s no wonder vacationers return year after year to bask in this small town’s charm. g

Selecting the Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants event in the city of Mérida holds a great deal of significance. This cosmopolitan city is considered to be the epicurean capital of Mexico and well-suited for an extravaganza of this magnitude. The town, one of the safest in Mexico, is lined with international restaurants — and the locals know and appreciate good food. In 2019, The Museum of Yucatecan Gastronomy (MUGY) was opened in Mérida to honor the chefs and cuisines of Mexico, affirming the community’s admiration of fine cuisine.
Each year, the entire region is abuzz the week of the ceremony. The Latin America's 50 Best Restaurant experience is an honor bestowed upon the best of the best in gastronomy. It’s so much more than selecting a great menu, it’s a gathering of some of the most passionate meal creators in the Latin world, many of whom realized their lifelong goal of opening their restaurants to serve their local communities. It’s a yearly assembly of an elevated bunch who are gifted with food preparation and put their heart and soul into each dish.
Tuca Mezzomo, chef and owner of Charco Restaurant in Sau Paulo, Brazil, who came in at number 35 with his first nomination to the 50 Best awards said, “We are so proud of our work, for years we’ve been working hard in the kitchen and now we are recognized and it’s amazing.”
The annual Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants lists are forged by the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, a group of 300 leaders in the restaurant industry across Latin America. The Academy is comprised of five regions: Mexico, Brazil, Central America, South America’s Northern region, and South America’s Southern region. The countries represented within these territories
include Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guyana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
It could be assumed that qualifying for the contest is entirely about a chef’s ability to create tasty food, but the process is much more complicated. There are several factors involved in selecting the 50 Best. The voting methodology is imposed by William Reed, the organization behind The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and Middle East & North Africa's 50 Best Restaurants. To maintain the integrity of the process, the voting regulations are strict and uncompromising:
Voting is strictly confidential before the list • announcement.
Each Academy member can nominate up to 10 • restaurants, at least 3 of which must be outside their own country. If the voter has been unable to travel internationally in the 18 months before the voting, they must vote only for 7 restaurants in their own country. There is no limit on the number of international votes they can submit.
Academy members submit their 10 choices in • order of preference (this weighting is used to decide on positions in the event of a tie).
Academy members must have eaten in the • restaurants they nominate in the last 18 months — and are asked to confirm this fact for each of their nominations. >>
WE ARE SO PROUD OF OUR WORK, FOR YEARS WE’VE BEEN WORKING HARD IN THE KITCHEN AND NOW WE ARE RECOGNIZED AND IT’S AMAZING.
“ “
Academy members must confirm the date of • their last visit to each of the restaurants they nominated.
Academy members are not permitted to vote for • restaurants they own or have a financial interest in.
Academy members cannot vote for a restaurant • based on a dining experience that does not take place at the restaurant itself; for example, when a restaurant or chef stages dinners in different locations.
Academy members cannot vote for a restaurant • that is closed or will close within 3 months of the list being published. They, therefore, cannot vote for a temporary restaurant or ‘pop-ups.’
Nominations must be made for the restaurant, not • for the restaurateur or the chef (except in the case of special individual awards).
Academy members should remain anonymous • with regard to being on Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants Academy.
Although the guidelines are stringent, once the event takes place it’s an over-the-top celebration of those who made the top 100 list. Sponsored by S. Pellegrino and Aqua Panna, the event kicks off with an outdoor reception at the Centro International De Congresos De Yucatán. The festivities include red carpet arrival, music, wine tasting and small bites as
the nominated chefs, adorned in a red scarfs, mingle with guests.
Maria Paula Amador, general manager and sommelier at Mesa Franca in Bogota, Columbia attended the ceremony with the restaurant’s Chef Iván Cadena. “We were not expecting to be nominated,” she said, “we just like to do what we do, we do it properly and this is like a plus that comes after all the hard work.”
In addition to the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants winners, individual awards were also issued for Highest Climber, Highest New Entry, Icon Award, Sustainable Restaurant, Best Sommelier, Gin Mare Art of Hospitality, Best Pastry Chef, Best Female Chef, One to Watch and Chef’s Choice Award.
Mauricio López, co-owner of Ancestral Restaurant in La Paz, Bolivia and winner of the American Express One to Watch Award, said the secret to his success is that he’s not looking for accolades. “We were super happy to be selected, we’re a new restaurant and we just want to make our customers happy,” he said, “we weren’t looking for an award, we just want to make good food.”
Gastronauts across the globe are encouraged to keep an open eye for next year’s Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants celebration. It’s a grand ordeal loaded with kitchen magicians at a celebration that honors not just their food, but their devotion to perfect their culinary craft. g

A Drive Through California’s Scenic Coast
BY CAITLIN ELIZABETH PIEHCalifornia is one of the most visited states for travelers near and far. For those who already call it home, a quick flight or drive can still lead you into a unique landscape. From Monarch butterflies migrating to voyaging whales breaching to sea otters sunning to birds hovering, each coastal town provides breathtaking views and freshly caught seafood.
Our state boasts near-perfect weather year-round with a mostly Mediterranean climate. Brimming with history and landmarks, beautiful beaches, farmland, wine and wildlife, the Golden State has a unique destination for every wanderer. Go explore the coast to “sea” what city inspires further exploration.
Bodega Bay-cation
A HIDDEN GEM NESTLED IN THE SONOMA COAST , BODEGA BAY IS A SMALL TOWN FAMOUS FOR THE FILMING OF ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S 1963 FILM “THE BIRDS.” IF YOU’VE SEEN IT, THIS CLASSIC FLICK MAY BE THE REASON FOR A PHOBIA OF FOWL. BUT HAVE NO FEAR, BODEGA BAY’S BIRDS ARE HARMLESS; IN FACT, THEY ARE ONE OF THE BELOVED ATTRACTIONS OF THE AREA.
Bodega Bay can turn an average bird lover into an ornithophile waiting to dive into bird guides and binoculars. For two miles of beach ideal for birdwatching, kite surfing, paddling, surfing or picnicking, take a cruise over to Doran Regional Park. The shoreline connects to the Bird Walk Coastal Access Trail. Also, if you want to stick to a Hitchcock bird theme, scenes from the movie were filmed at The Tides Wharf & Restaurant and The Birds Cafe.
While bird-watching may be what draws some visitors in, other nearby outdoor adventures include flying kites, whale watching, kayaking, fishing, clamming, horseback riding, golfing and hiking.
Bodega Bay is a romantic region surrounded by lush greens, marshland and sea. The tranquil town provides more than just a pit stop on a road trip. There are fun and quirky shops, like the popular Candy & Kites, which is filled with everything from kites to souvenirs to books to sweet treats. And with numerous outdoor activities and eateries, Bodega Bay’s unique rugged beauty and breathtaking vistas provide the perfect backdrop for your next vacation.
So, while "The Birds" may have put Bodega Bay on the map, the fresh seafood, cheese and wine, paired with offbeat wildlife adventures, are what keep visitors coming back. A working fishing community, this friendly town is notable for its fresh and sustainably caught seafood. Filled with fishing boats, wharves and marinas, the Bodega Harbor is home to fresh-off-the-boat seafood spots.
Spud Point Crab Company, voted best White Clam Chowder on the Sonoma Coast, totes in fresh seafood straight from the local fishing boats. Enjoy items ranging from sandwiches to cocktails (the food kind) at this seafood eatery, all experienced with adjacent bay views.
Fishetarian Fish Market is a Bodega Bay staple. The low-key waterfront outdoor restaurant serves freshly and sustainably caught seafood
ranging from Maui Wowie Oysters to Fish-n-Chips to Clam Chowder to Prawn Tacos and more. For those who don’t enjoy delights from the sea, the Adult Grilled Cheese is a must eat. Oozing with Valley Ford’s cheese, grilled onions and fig jam, it definitely won’t make you feel like you are sitting at the kiddie table.
For more of that delicious cheese, Valley Ford Cheese & Creamery is just 10 minutes outside of Bodega Bay in Sonoma County. The family-owned company produces delectably handcrafted cheeses made from 100% Jersey cows’ milk. The flavorsome cheeses are featured in several dishes at local restaurants, but can also be enjoyed at the storefront, along with other bites, soft serve and coffee beverages.
However, if it is wine that your tastebuds are craving, Sonoma Coast Vineyards provides visitors a relaxed flight tasting experience with sweeping ocean views. Wine aficionados can enjoy a part of the Sonoma Coast without the drive to wine country. Though, if you are up for the drive, there are plenty of notable vineyards nearby.
Bodega Head Trail is a relaxed 1.9-mile hike through wildlife with scenic trails and beautiful bluff top views. Sightseers may spot seabirds, whales, seals and additional marine life. The picture-worthy Bodega Head is also accessible by car. A few minutes before Bodega Head is the epic PG&E fail turned noteworthy spot, Hole in the Head. When activists stopped the plans of a nuclear plant, the project was dropped and the excavated hole has since filled with water over the years and turned into a playground for birds and other wildlife. The hole can be accessed via Campbell Cove.
While this small Northern California town has plenty of options to host your next stay, our choice is The Lodge at Bodega Bay. Guests can enjoy neverending scenery through private balconies overlooking the ocean and marshland. The spacious rooms are equipped with fireplaces offering warmth during brisk nights. >>
Early morning walks on the acres of flawlessly landscaped grounds are mysteriously serene with the fog encasing the property. Within hours, the fog rolls out and it is time to start the day. The Lodge offers complimentary morning yoga, Pilates and guided mediation with stunning coastal views. Guests can also enjoy the resort’s amenities — heated pool, infinity hot tub, sauna, spotless gym, fire pits and bocce ball court. A quick walk or bike (with complimentary cruisers from The Lodge) sets guests in the nearby bird sanctuary and nature preserve — perfect for more bird watching.
In addition, the resort provides informational booklets wrapped around the room keys. From bird species to eateries to wine tasting, these handy booklets will set you on the right path to Sonoma County's must-see spots.
The on-property restaurant, Drakes Sonoma Coast, infuses The Lodge’s garden-picked herbs with local produce and products to create fresh one-of-a-kind dishes. Chef Damon Jones hones in on the region’s abundance of fresh seafood, meat and local cheese along with honey from the property’s own beehives to create seasonal menu items. Sip and savor your way through dinner with perfectly paired wine for each course. The refined lodge atmosphere provides incredible eats without feeling stuffy — while getting
stuffed. After dinner, sip on a craft cocktail at the 300year-old Elm Tree bar, located inside the restaurant.
Outside, guests can cozy up at Drakes Fireside Lounge near a fire pit table. The outdoor spot provides a laid-back atmosphere to enjoy similar Drakes menu items in a more comfy setting — not to take away from the exceptional dining experience inside the restaurant.
Additional resort offerings include tasty services like S’mores S’Monday where guests can roast and enjoy the treat in the lobby. Lodgers can also experience local wines and light snacks in the Den from Thursday to Saturday evenings at The Lodge’s Wine Receptions.
The Lodge at Bodega Bay underwent a multimillion renovation amid its 50th anniversary. The gorgeous updates turned this hotel into an elegant coastal hideaway intertwined in the natural beauty of the wild woodland and Pacific Ocean. Blending comforting calmness with exciting eats, The Lodge at Bodega Bay provides a home base for the busy traveler’s body and mind.
To see it all, a car is a great option to explore Bodega Bay and Sonoma County as a whole. However, Bodega Bay is easily explored on foot, bikes and quick Lyft/Uber rides. No matter your mode of transportation, this hidden gem is a don’t miss g

I want to go from taking photos at concerts such “The Last Shadow Puppets” and “Pierce the Veil” to being the guy on that stage.
