e’re moving into 2022 with COVID19 still in tow. Most of us could not have guessed that at the time the virus was uncovered in early 2020 we’d still be wrangling masks and mandates this long. But we’ve come a long way since those early days when we were mostly confused and uneducated about coronavirus varieties. Two years later, we’ve become well-versed on variants and vaccine types, and understand terms like “super-spreader” and “hand hygiene” without having to ask for clarification. Despite the inconveniences we’ve had to undertake since the global outbreak, 2021 turned out to be a better year than 2020 when we were first informed that a deadly virus would likely wipe out a fraction of our planet’s population. By 2021 we were offered vaccines and resources to equip us physically and intellectually against our new viral enemy. And as we look ahead to 2022, we get to choose if we will remain fearful, moderately cautious, or committed to creating a life that’s safe, healthy and happy for ourselves and our families. The new year offers us an opportunity to reflect on our past and make modifications to improve our futures. While this exercise is not limited to a specific date on the calendar, January is a convenient time of year to choose to walk away from issues that threaten to defeat us to better places emotionally. While this choice begins with adjustments to our mindset, it generally requires alterations in behavior. Since it’s looking like COVID is not going away anytime soon, we can still make wise decisions to keep ourselves healthy but still press on to achieve the life we want despite outside forces that seem intimidating. We at Southern California Life magazine wish our readers the very best year ahead and hope that 2022 turns out to be your strongest, healthiest and happiest year yet! Warmly,
Monique SOCALLIFEMAG.COM

ore than nine decades after its inception, the sign that began as a way to advertise real estate remains an icon of fame and pop-culture, and is arguably the most famous landmark in the world. In the early 1900s, a burgeoning movie industry had ushered in a slue of wealthy and powerful residents to the area that would eventually become Hollywood. Film producers had been attracted to southern California for its versatile terrain and agreeable climate. By 1920, with upwards of 40 million Americans going to the movies each week, Tinsel Town had officially landed on the map. Real estate investor and “Los Angeles Times” publisher Harry Chandler saw potential in investing in the quickly-populating area. Chandler would fork over $21,000 (about $260,000 today) to construct a sign for his exclusive Hollywoodland Real Estate venture. Dedicated on July 13, 1923, the massive advertisement contained 13 letters (the “Land” portion would be removed in 1949) and measured 30 feet wide by 43 feet tall — this was impressive, considering that each letter had to be dragged up to the precarious location via steep, unpaved dirt paths. The soon-to-be-famous sign boasted 4,000 light bulbs, 20 watts each. It was also reported in a Hollywoodland advertisement (in Chandler’s own LA Times) that “200 men were employed, 7 miles of road had been cut and 300,000 cubic yards of dirt had been moved.” By day, the ominous letters marked Chandler’s vast real estate boom town; by night, the glamorous letters — which blinked “Holly” then “Wood” then “Land”— was becoming a star in its own right. In 1930, Thomas Lee took his father’s

fallen off and tumbled down the hill, now reading “Hullywod”) the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce commissioned a quarter million dollar renovation. Hugh Hefner, who’s been called “the sign’s number one fan,” stepped up by hosting a gala to auction off brand-new letters for $27,700 each. Some of the biggest names in the biz helped fund the effort, including Gene Autry, who purchased an “L,” Warner Bros. an “O” and singer Andy Williams, a “W.”
“Today, the billboard that was only meant to last 18 months remains among the most-visited landmarks in the world.” (radio pioneer Don Lee) following to the small-screen. Broadcasting news and other events from the Hollywood sign (the area around it had been dubbed “Mt. Lee”), the younger Lee brought a visual to the day-to-day glamour of L.A. life. The sign would become the object of scandal in 1933 when New York stage actress Peg Entwistle plunged to her death from the letter “H.” Entwistle, who’d failed to succeed at the film career she’d so desperately wanted,
would finally achieve fame in her death. She would go down in infamy as the “Hollywood Sign Girl.” By the end of the 1940s, Harry Chandler’s real estate venture was defunct (a residual effect of the Great Depression) and the letters of the one-time billboard were now decaying. Albert Kothe, the sign’s caretaker didn’t help matters when he drove drunk one night and lost control of his vehicle, destroying the letter “H.” Though the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the city of Los Angeles to repair the façade in 1949, the sign would continue to deteriorate over the next two decades. If the first 20 years of its life were about promoting Hollywood real estate, the years to come would be about preserving its cultural and historic impact. In the 1970s, recognizing the desperate need for restoration (the top of the first “O” had all but eroded and the second one had

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, efforts continued to revitalize the sign, as well as the city of Hollywood continued. Today, the billboard that was only meant to last 18 months remains among the most-visited landmarks in the world. It’s a destination for everyone from photographers, historians and film buffs, to outdoor and environmental enthusiasts. The sign that Hugh Hefner has called “Hollywood’s Eiffel Tower” remains a symbol of celebrity, glamour and fame — and has a mystique that can only be found in Hollywood. omance and affection, the outward expressions of inward feelings, are indispensible aspects of nurturing loving relationships. And, of course, sexual passion and amorous feelings help partners to feel cherished and treasured by each other. Physical chemistry between two people is real and exciting and cannot be manufactured or ignored. However, feelings are not the primary glue for committed partners. Rather, friendship, trust, and respect provide the foundation for a relationship’s longevity and meaning. Since romantic moments cannot be sustained indefinitely, here are a few tips to help avoid disappointments and regrets that may jeopardize opportunities for future pleasure.
1
2
MANAGE EXPECTATIONS People are not static — needs, desires and priorities change over time. Therefore, we need to be realistic about expectations — our own as well as those of our partners. And, be especially mindful of keeping love and passion alive.
5
SOCALLIFEMAG.COM
19
FAIR FIGHTING People are imperfect individuals and life can be complicated, as disagreements and problems will arise. It’s not what happens in life that matters so much. Rather, it’s how we handle things and what they mean to us that count. When difficulties and conflicts occur, address them truthfully, and do it sooner rather than later. Communicate clearly and respectfully in order to identify and resolve the right problem and work towards a mutually beneficial outcome.
PRIORITIZE YOUR RELATIONSHIP Be intentional about treasuring your partner by keeping the lines of communication open and clean. Be sure to show your feelings of affection and regard because actions matter and help to keep romance alive.
CLARIFY COMMUNICATION If you think that your partner should be able to read your mind about your wishes, needs and wants, understand that this is rarely possible. Trying to do it is hard and is NOT an expression of, or proof of, whether or not someone loves you. Clear communication is vital to establishing trust and safety within a relationship and speaking up is vital. It is important that your words and actions match in order to convey your meaning loud and clear. Lack of open, honest communication can cause stress and distrust.
SHOW RESPECT People with common interests are often attracted to each other, however, it is important that each person be respected as a unique and independent individual. What matters most is how you treat your partner, regardless of how either of you may feel at a particular moment. In fact, it is often the individual differences that provide the most interest and fun in a relationship.
6
ENDURING RELATIONSHIPS Shed your unrealistic and idealized notions of a perfect relationship — of having a soul mate meet your every need. Genuine connection and partnership thrives when each individual contributes to creating a meaningful, secure and joyful relationship. Because so much of communication is non-verbal, actions and romance are tangible ways of letting your partner know the depth and breadth of your feelings, affection and respect. v

Carlsbad The SoCal Local’s Home Away From Home One of the wonderful aspects about Southern California is that you can live here and still choose a Southland destination to visit on vacation. Most residents have vehicles, so a two-hour drive can transport a family to a resort that can make the trip feel like it’s a million miles away from home. The North San Diego County town of Carlsbad, with its scenic 7-mile coastline and year-round near perfect climate, is a Staycationer’s top choice when considering a drive-to getaway. With attractions like LEGOLAND, Del Mar Racetrack, USS Midway Museum, San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, the Sea Life Aquarium, and the seasonal Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, there is enough amusement to entertain every age group. Selecting the right hotel to call home while visiting is the key to ensuring a visit to Carlsbad is extraordinary both indoors and out. We choose three of our favorites to spotlight.

The former Annenberg estate welcomed presidents and royalty since the 1960’s thanks to publisher billionaire magnate Walter Annenberg, who created TV Guide, Seventeen Magazine, and one of the first TV stations out of Philadelphia. Most notable is the introductory 35-minute film showcasing the numerous presidents and celebs who brought the estate to life. Walk the wildflower field or Great Lawn gardens and marvel at the history of this former meeting place where often over golf or dinner, major ideas were exchanged, and international relations and laws were sorted out and discussed. Admire more than 70 species of arid adapted plants amongst twin reflecting pools filled with river stones and contemplate life on the Obama bench or while winding through a labyrinth. Yoga, bird walks, and private tours of the home have resumed.
MOORTEN BOTANICAL GARDEN The world’s first “Cactarium” is still thriving thanks to 78year-old Mr. Moorten who oversees this special place which was created by his parents in 1938. Along the nature trail, visitors can slowly wander the rustic one-acre to fully absorb the arid biomes of desert trees and cacti categorized by geography, such as Baja California, the South African-Succulent Karoo, and Mojave Desert region. Extraordinary desert varieties can be found in the greenhouse - from miniature to giant in every form, each crawling snake-like up the rafters. Odd cacti in funny shapes and sizes grow with their own unique personalities. Moorten’s Mediterranean home, called the Cactus Castle, sits in the Palm Grove Oasis and throughout the short traipse you’ll discover gold mining relics, an old adobe wall, massive crystals, fossils, and several desert tortoises amongst the flora. Also on display are massive agave, ocotillo, bombax, and South African aloe plants. Before exiting, stop by the nursery to purchase desert treasures to take home. There is a $5 entrance fee. A TIME WHEN WOMEN WERE NOT ENCOURAGED TO COMPETE SERIOUSLY IN SPORTING EVENTS, GEORGE FREETH TAUGHT THEM HOW TO SWIM, ROW, DIVE, AND SURF. He entered them in state and regional tournaments even though their accomplishments were not officially recognized because the Amateur Athletic Union didn’t sanction women’s events until 1914. Freeth’s sense
of beach culture always included women. He trained them hard and promoted their achievements. Although Freeth taught writer Jack London how to surf at Waikīkī in the summer of 1907, his work with women in many ways represents a counter-narrative to London’s hypermasculine stories of mastery and dominance in the surf. With some exceptions, Freeth’s egalitarian sense of wave riding — traditionally practiced by both sexes in Hawaii — was not the path that California surfers chose to follow in the decades after Freeth’s death. But it could have been. Freeth started coaching women soon after arriving in Venice in 1907. On Labor Day,

1908, two young swimmers known as the “Seaweed Sisters” — Dorothy Newkirk and Avis Gordon — competed with Freeth in a three-and-a-half-mile swim between the Santa Monica Pier and the Venice breakwater. Newkirk and Gordon had become notable not only for their swimming exploits but because they wore men’s bathing suits, which helped lower their racing times. Freeth won the competition that day in one hour and 13 minutes. Despite a heavy swell and cross currents, both women finished strongly: Newkirk in an hour and thirtyseven minutes, and Gordon in an hour and forty-one minutes (both were given a ten-minute

handicap). The event highlights Freeth’s great effectiveness as a coach. He typically competed alongside his students, encouraging them to challenge both him and them. He followed the same strategy with all his protégés, whether it was Olympic goldmedalist Duke Kahanamoku or local high-school sensation Dorothy Newkirk. It would not be surprising at all if Freeth had encouraged the women to don male suits, both to improve their times and to increase their safety since women’s suits of this era were more akin to dresses in their length and weight. Abbie Victoria “Dolly” Mings was Freeth’s first female star in Redondo Beach. At 17 she came in third place in the mile at the Pacific Coast Swimming Championships in September 1911. Once Freeth arrived back from Hawai‘i in November 1911 and started working with her, she quickly vaulted to prominence in the shorter distances. She won the 50-yard freestyle at a tournament that included the men’s Olympic tryouts in March 1912. Had American women been able to compete in the Olympics (this didn’t happen until 1920), she certainly could have earned a spot. In August 1912 Freeth inaugurated the open-ocean swimming championship in nearby Ocean Park. Mings won her race wearing a men’s bathing suit. She completed her season in September by winning the 100yard freestyle in the Southern California Swimming Championships. Although Dolly Mings married in January 1913, she continued to train with Freeth. Her routine began with a two-mile run every morning up the beach. Freeth’s method of cross-training for his young swimmers - running, diving, and surfing - built their strength and endurance,

which gave them an edge in competition. Dolly Mings defended her title in July 1913 as the fastest woman swimmer on the Pacific Coast by setting a record in the 50-yard freestyle. Because women’s events were not yet officially sanctioned by the AAU — New York President James Edward Sullivan thought women had “little or no place in athletics” — Mings swam her events before and after the men’s competition. Freeth continued to coach women to swim and surf from Los Angeles to San Diego. Although he passed away in the prime of his life during the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 (he was thirty-five years old), his legacy of creating a waterwoman tradition as part of California beach culture lived on through his students. Lyba and Nita Sheffield, who had trained under Freeth in Venice, later organized the Girls’ Life-Saving Corps when they became students at the University of California at Berkeley. They wrote a textbook in 1920 — Swimming Simplified — that included several chapters on rescue techniques and included a picture of Freeth on a threewheeled motorcycle that he had developed for lifeguarding. v

ulver City is where the past and the future meet in the present. Bordering the Westside on the north and Marina del Rey to the west, this is the birthplace of some of Hollywood’s greatest films and TV shows of today and yesterday. “Gone with the Wind”, “Singin’ in the Rain”, “North by Northwest”, “Showboat”, “Thelma & Louise” and dozens of other classics were made at the former MGM Studios - now Sony Pictures Studios, and The Culver Studios, founded by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince, and also once owned by icons Cecil B. DeMille, David O. Selznik, Pathe Studios and Desilu. Early TV hits included “The Andy Griffith Show”, “Lassie”, “Batman”, “The Nanny”, “Deal or No Deal” and endless others. Today, Culver City continues as a major entertainment capital turning out major TV hits and blockbuster movies. Its creativity is not limited to the entertainment industry. Once home to Hughes Aircraft and the Spruce Goose (1932-1985) and Helms Bakery (19311969), Culver City is also a magnet for visionaries in the business, architectural, arts, retail, and culinary worlds. In what was once a destitute neighborhood of drugs and decaying industrial buildings stands Hayden Tract, one of today’s most exciting central Los Angeles locations. Just 10

minutes south of Rodeo Drive, 15 minutes from Venice, and 20 minutes from downtown, it was originally considered an architectural oddity of 31 eclectic buildings designed by local architect Eric Owen Moss. His assemblage of inimitable structures continues to be a mecca for architectural devotees worldwide. Today, Hayden Tract is also home to trend-setting media, advertising and real estate firms. The vision shared by Moss and his client, developers Frederick and Laurie Samitaur Smith, was to inspire economic and social change through architecture and grow vibrant communities around this innovative hub. There was no master plan, government subsidy or political influence, making the idea quite laughable at the time. Still, the Samitaur Smiths and Moss believed this area could be reborn entirely with private financing, and despite all the guffaws, that’s precisely what they did. Moss’ more recent works include the 72-foot high Samitaur Tower that serves as the tract’s iconic welcoming structure. Unlike commercial digital billboards, the angled screens on the tower’s curved façade broadcasts information on local events and non-commercial art and graphics. sagging mid-section that looks overly endowed with love handles. Titles of other buildings also represent their atypical looks with names such as the Stealth, Beehive, and The Box defining their irregular façades, twisted angles, and other singular abstract features. In 2010, thirty-somethings David Fishbein and Joseph Miller formed Runyon Group, a full-service real estate company also dedicated to creating neighborhoods that serve not only the basic needs but provide an imaginative contrast to the traditional mall that would attract both locals and visitors. And, like Samitaur Smiths, so they did. In addition to owning and managing high-end real estate projects, Runyon provides advisory services to other developers, helping to shape the city’s brand. Today, the area is drawing visitors from all over the southland - the destination made easier to access with the new Expo Line’s stop at 8817 Washington Blvd. connecting downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Next door to the station is Platform, Runyon’s signature retail center in the Hayden Tract, which opened last year in a three-story building with colorful murals enhancing its one-of-a-kind corrugated metal façade. Retail spaces are carefully curated and leased to innovative first-to-market designers, specialty retailers, art galleries, chefdriven eateries and other compa-

Some call it Los Angeles’ “top capsule of cool.” At Platform you’ll find Guild, Monocle, Promised Land, Modern Society, Teller and foodie favorites including Blue Bottle Coffee, Holey Grail Donuts and Sweetgreen. Space is also allocated for select, short-term tenants and special events which can range from preOscar parties to seasonal art presentations by companies such as Tappan Collective, an online platform for discovering and presenting original artwork by emerging talent. www.platformla.com Also in anticipation of the continuing creative influx, Expo Line and other forms of public transportation, downtown Culver City has recently undergone another major rebirth, and developers are still eyeing locations around the city for new office buildings, apartments, and multi-use structures. New restaurants, shops and businesses are appearing in a city that is no longer totally automobile-reliant.

Although generally referred to as “Lake Tahoe,” the area consists of a range of communities, each with their respective attributes and attractions. Incline Village is home to some of the wealthiest people in the world, while Meyers, just south of South Lake Tahoe, is a small, quaint town that is home to longtime locals in the region. Glenbrook, on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe, is a historic, tranquil, rural community, of which only 150 acres of the town have been developed. Kings Beach, Squaw Valley, Tahoe City, Sand Harbor, Heavenly, and Alpine Meadows are some of the other towns that encircle the lake and choosing just one to visit can shortchange a traveler’s fluency of Tahoe. Here, we select two resorts that provide the best Lake Tahoe experience, offering what they describe as Dual Days; guests enjoy the mountain in Squaw Valley, California, and then the lake in Incline Village, Nevada.
