THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE, CONEJO VALLEY VETERINARY HOSPITAL BY JC CADENA

Dr. Miller established Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital in 1958. His vision was to create a place where veterinarians could share ideas, and support each other, while providing the best in veterinary care. He believed the knowledge base with a group of veterinarians was always better than just one. The hospital is now one of the largest veterinary practices in Southern California because of his vision. When the hospital was established there were not many people living in the Conejo Valley, but there were many animals. There were cattle, sheep, and horses, on the many ranches that sprawled endlessly throughout the valley. There were dogs, cats and other family pets living in new suburbs being created for families. There were the exotic animals, Dr. Lookingbill elephants, tigers, lions and monkeys. Many were housed at the theme park Jungle Land, but many movie and circus animals were also housed on compounds in the area. Conejo Valley was a unique place in the world to practice veterinary medicine. The power of the team and rich history are what have set Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital apart from the others throughout the years. Dr. Hughes, the newest owner of the hospital has taken on the legacy and is carrying on the vision. He recently moved the hospital into a brand new state-of-the-art facility in Thousand Oaks and continues to practice compassionate veterinary care with the latest technology such as endoscopy, ultrasound and digital x-rays. Since a young age Dr. Hughes was naturally drawn to animals. He remembers Happy, a snake, and shares how his grandmother would never go into the house because of Happy. He continued to talk with me about his dog, Sparky, “We had him for 12-13 years. I remember coming home from college, and he was crippled and couldn’t walk”, he continued, “we had to put him to sleep. Sparky had crippling arthritis due to hip dysplasia. Now we have medications that can help add two, three years to their lives.” This is why there is no place like Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital for your loved pet. Kindness begins with Dr. Hughes and translates to the entire practice of over 100 employees. For the past 3 years, Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital has had emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “Our level of patient care has increased

exponentially now that we have a doctor on premises during the night”, said Dr. Hughes. “Now we do not have to be concerned with transporting a critical patient to a different location during after hours. Here, the emergency doctor can access medical records electronically, which avoids repeating expensive tests.” The new hospital is a certified feline friendly practice with feline only exam-room and ward. The rooms are quiet, away from barking dogs, and have pheromone vaporizers allowing sick felines to heal with minimal stress. There is a cat adoption room in the facility; Dr. Stephanie Lipp, Dr. Hughes’ wife, runs it and rescues kittens from animal shelters. They have added a new service, a dog resort and daycare. Doggy day care has worked out great for owners that have a dog needing more exercise and for dogs that have separation anxiety. “It is amazing how calm a dog can get after socializing with other dogs for the day”, says Dr. Hughes. They also have cage-free and kennel boarding. This gives clients peace of mind knowing that there is a doctor present in case a problem arises. Less than a year at the new location, the hospital is already running in 5th gear. But Dr. Hughes doesn’t want to stop there; his vision is to always be looking at new ways of improving patient care & client service.

NEW FOOD FOR THOUGHT TEN THINGS TO T REMEMBER ABOUT THE 2015 McLAREN 650S

rying to narrow your favorite things about the 2015 McLaren 650S is like a guy trying to select the best man for his wedding in his tightly-knit family of five brothers. Regardless of who he picks, he’ll be explaining himself years down the road. Still, after having an opportunity to spend the past few months becoming more familiar with McLaren thanks to The Auto Gallery in Calabasas, I’ve managed to narrow down ten things I think everyone should know about the supercar and the brand. Of course, my top ten list is more of a personal perspective, with a few reflections on life after driving the 650S in Southern California.

MC DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014

McLAREN CALABASAS / 15

1. First Impressions Are Important Although it has been said, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” the McLaren 650S is a testament to the fact that the “cover” certainly is the first thing that gets your attention.

6. Malibu Is Meant for Fun There are probably no better roads in Southern California than some of the more scenic ones in and around Malibu to convince you that a car like a McLaren really is a necessity.

2. Appeal Comes In Many Colors With exterior colors like Mantis Green, Aurora Blue and Tarocco Orange as well as more traditional colors like Standard White and Standard Silver, deciding which 650S you like more will surely test your personal taste.

7. Uniqueness Has Its Perks With so many highperformance cars in Southern California, it becomes clear driving the 650S that while nostalgia has its appeal, uniqueness definitely is a breath of fresh air.

3. Don’t Fight Love Forget everything you’ve heard about the idea of falling in love too soon because from the second you step inside the 650S you realize that temptation is often hard to resist.

8. Actions Speak Louder Than Words Although you’ve probably heard of McLaren, you can’t really appreciate the automotive brand until you’ve had a chance to experience it at the wheel.

4. Meeting People Is Easy Even if you’ve never really had a problem striking up a conversation, having a sidekick like the 650S certainly lessens the need for any real effort on your part.

9. Be Daring There’s something to be said about McLaren’s aggressive approach to design, given how much attention the car gets, that reminds you that “safe ideas” often have very little payoff when it comes to standing out.

5. Power Is Contagious After an afternoon drive on Kanan Road, you quickly realize how misguided the idea that money is better than power really is with about 650 horsepower on hand.

10. Money Is Relative Even with a cost of up to $350,000, the adage, “what good is working hard if you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labor,” reigns even clearer after spending time with the 650S.

GET BEHIND THE WHEEL Visit www.McLarenCalabasas.com or call directly to set up an appointment to test drive the new McLaren 650S and be sure to share the experience on the official Facebook pages for McLaren Calabasas and the Malibu Chronicle.

DR. HILDA MALDONADO

Q:

A:

Does Hormone Balance equate to needing hormone replacement?

HORMONE BALANCE DOES NOT ALWAYS EQUATE TO NEEDING HORMONE REPLACEMENT. In reality this is a very individualized decision and multiple factors must be considered. The reasons for these choices vary from person to person, and it can change for the same individual based on age and lifestyle choices at different stages in life. Sometimes there are contraindications for replacement, regardless of the indications and vice versa. Some well-known relative contraindications to estrogen and or testosterone products or byproducts include a family or personal history of conditions like breast or prostate cancer. The irony is that these conditions usually emerge as a result of a weakened immune system, and sex hormone (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone) imbalances are often at the root of such weakness. In addition if a person is thyroid deficient, adrenally deficient, has excess insulin or has vitamin D deficiency, they are compromising their immune system and in turn increasing their risk for chronic disease. It is important to focus on attaining proper hormone "rhythm" and immune system "harmony" and preserve a strong brain, bones and immune and cardiovascular system. Avoiding environmental hormone disruptors and learning how to eat in order to preserve hormonal health is crucial, whether you choose to replace or not. When replacing, it is best to choose bio-identical products. Be aware that any form of oral estrogen whether bio-identical or not, is not beneficial for your cardiovascular system, as it increases inflammatory markers. Transdermal or trans mucosal estrogen replacement does not have this detrimental effect. Oral testosterone should always be avoided as it can increase the risk for liver problems. Progesterone can be used either orally, transdermal or trans mucosal. When replacing hormones, the goal should be to remain within physiologic levels and avoid excesses that can result in side effects. The bottom line is that we cannot live healthy and vibrant lives without hormone balance and we deteriorate when our hormones decline. Become educated and empowered, understand that you have choices and a say on your wellness care decisions. Follow me on Twitter @LatinaDoctor. Q:

A:

What causes Osteoarthritis in animals and how to take care of it?

OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA) IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON DISORDERS SEEN IN SMALL ANIMAL VETERINARY MEDICINE, PARTICULARLY IN OLDER PATIENTS. Also known as “Degenerative Joint Disease,” canine osteoarthritis is a chronic, progressive disease. It refers to inflammation of the joints and their associated bones. Some physical changes can occur including bone destruction, abnormal bone re-growth, scar tissue proliferation and soft tissue swelling around a joint. The most commonly affected joints are the hips, knees, elbows, and spine as well as the carpi (wrist) and hock (ankle) joints. It is important to understand that as a progressive disease process, osteoarthritis will continue to worsen during a pet’s life, and our goal as veterinarians is to slow down the progression and ensure the comfort of your pet. Causes of osteoarthritis usually involve long-term joint stress and joint cartilage deterioration. Acute injuries, congenital or developmental joint deformities, and inherited conditions can also lead to the development of osteoarthritis. Symptoms of osteoarthritis can include one or more of the following: Lameness/abnormal gait, stiffness (especially after waking up), reluctance to run or jump or go upstairs, slow to sit and/or rise, decreased interest in playful activity or walks, sensitivity near affected joints when touched, restlessness/unable to get comfortable, joint clicking or grinding during motion, and more. Many pet-owners don’t realize their pets are showing clinical signs as these often develop gradually on top of the fact that most animals’ natural instinct is to hide pain or discomfort as a survival mechanism. Routine veterinary exams are the first step to diagnosing osteoarthritis. During the exam veterinarians gather a history from the pet owner, perform an orthopedic exam including joint palpation, manipulation and range of motion movements, and may take digital radiographs (x-rays) to specifically localize and grade the degree of disease. Your veterinarian will then formulate a treatment plan that usually begins with lifestyle and dietary changes and often includes medical management and, potentially, orthopedic surgery. Obesity is a huge player in osteoarthritis and weight loss is absolutely critical for many patients to reduce the rate of OA progression. Joint care supplements, including glucosamine & chondroitin sulfate, as well as physical therapy can be good options for initial OA management. If you are concerned for your pet's orthopedic health, be proactive and schedule a wellness exam with your veterinarian. The sooner the condition is diagnosed, the longer your pet may be able to enjoy day-to-day activity in comfort. www.conejovet.com

You may have heard her on Radio or seen her on Television with David Letterman; Charlie Rose; Matt Lauer; Bryant Gumbel or a host of others. A

S WE MOVE CLOSER TO A BRAND NEW YEAR so many of

us are thinking about how to make that new 365day gift ahead the best it can possibly be. How we can move forward toward reaching the goals we set for ourselves and how we can achieve happiness within. Last year at this time I shared with you readers The Magic of Making Memories. This year the message to myself that I’d like again to share is the Magic of ‘Connectivity’. A connection means; a joining; a relationship between two entities, and in our everyday lives we encounter connections of every sort, in every genre. Available to us are health connections that could very well aid our wellness, there are mental connections that, if made, could aid our memories, geographic connections that could instill a spirit for adventure, historical, mathematic, and all sorts of academic connections. Though many seem inviting, we often don’t acknowledge or take advantage of them and neglect to embrace them. If you’ve been following my online feature column “About Your Memory” in the Malibu Chronicle (www.malibuchronicle.com ) you will have learned that the most important key to making your memory work is the ‘connection’ key. In order to have a reliable memory you have to know how to make connections within your own thinking from the new to the known. But did you ever stop to think how very valuable connectivity is without as well as within.

The Human Connection There are human connections to be made everywhere but, as I said, more often than not we neglect to embrace them. Other than in a business situation or a career promoting opportunity, we rarely appreciate their value. And yet the spirit and energy that can be derived from all those around us is munificent if we only took the time to notice.

The Value of a Wave and a Smile As many of you know, who drive Corral Canyon in Malibu, I am often referred to as The Lady On The Mountain, as, in order to

The Zombie Syndrome How many people do you pass on the street or in the market or shopping each day? Do you avert your eyes and just pass each other like zombies? Why is that? Next time you pass a stranger, instead of averting your eyes, why not try a smile. You’ll probably receive a smile in return. That’s connectivity. That one exchanged gesture can change your whole mood (and theirs too). It creates a wonderful vitality (especially if he’s a handsome hunk or she’s a dish). But don’t limit yourself. Connectivity works with almost everyone. So it doesn’t matter who you share that passing connection with. Humankind is made up of all sorts. Whether skinnies or fatties, wrinkled or dimpled, hairy or bald, abled or disabled, dishes or dogs, let loose a smile or a wave. And make a connection. Try it, I promise it won’t hurt a bit.

A Positive Power

keep in shape, I walk up that canyon toward El Nido most days of the week. And it’s really a very tough trek, (and it would be just as tough if I were still 21 and didn’t have a bum leg…..But I’m well over 21 and do have a bum leg…. [that’s why I stop every so often in case you wondered]). But I couldn’t do it without utilizing the connectivity of strangers. There isn’t a car, a truck, a motorcycle or a bike that passes that I don’t wave at (weights in hand) and send a smile to. And in an instant I receive a wave and a smile in return that brightens my spirits and lifts me up. For those strangers are like a cheering section that helps me summon up the energy to plod onward, and in so doing those strangers become my friends.

The feeling is priceless. It creates in that connective moment a feel-good feeling in both the connector and the connectee. The giver becomes the receiver and vice-versa. And here in Malibu I’ve shared that connection at one time or another with Matthew McConaughey- Shirley McLaine (didn’t even recognize her)-Barbra Streisand -Charlie Sheen (a sweetheart) – and even Ben Stein. The more you get in the habit of Connectivity the better you’ll feel. And the more comfortable you’ll be in making those vital career and business connections which might turn out to be the mainstay of your success. By the way, one of those strangers I waved to and shared a smile with one day on my way up the mountain, turned out to be Veera Mahajan, the Publisher/Owner of the Malibu Chronicle. And here I am! Have a wonderful holiday season and a year filled with ‘CONNECTIVITY’. Let it lift you up*

Q:

A:

What exactly is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

FOR MANY PATIENTS CONSIDERING SPINAL SURGERY, THE FEAR OF A LARGE INCISION, HOSPITAL STAYS AND A LONG RECOVERY PERIOD WAS ENOUGH TO SCARE THEM AWAY FROM SURGERY. However, with incredible advancements in spine surgical technologies, Dr. Anthony Virella is able to perform spine surgical procedures using an incision of only an inch or less and with many patients returning home the same day. With this revolutionary technique, a small incision is made at the surgical point, allowing the surgeon to access the affected area of the spine. From here, using the latest advances in fluoroscopic technologies, a series of cameras are utilized to pinpoint the exact location of the affected discs or nerves. After the areas are identified, the surgeon slips the necessary instruments between muscles and under bone and vertebral structures. This approach minimizes blood loss and the collateral damage to muscles, nerves and bones that is common in more traditional surgeries. The entire surgery can be carried out through this tiny incision with no need for unnecessary exploration or cutting. In a more traditional spine surgery, an incision is made in the patient’s back that usually runs the length of the entire spine. To gain access to the spinal column or vertebral bodies it is a common practice to saw through bone, burn muscle fibers and cut through the surrounding muscles. This exponentially increases the recovery time for patients because now, not only does the spine have to heal, but the bones, nerves and muscles must heal as well. Furthermore, there is a mass amount of scarring to the surgical area. Some patients had scars several inches long or the entire length of the back. With the Minimally Invasive Approach, all skeletal layers remain intact and there is no sawing, burning or cutting. This shortens the recovery period exponentially and the only necessary healing is a result of the procedure itself. Also, scarring is minimal due to the smaller incision that is made only at the surgical point. Dr. Anthony Virella is a Board-Certified, Fellowship trained Neurological Spine Surgeon with advanced training in the management of complex spinal disorders. Dr. Virella is a nationally recognized specialist in the field of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. www.dr-virella.com

MANY PEOPLE DO NOT REALIZE THE IMPACT, STAINED TEETH, A NARROW SMILE OR BROKEN AND WORN DOWN TEETH CAN HAVE ON THEIR APPEARANCE. Dentistry today can provide dramatic results that can be obtained through teeth whitening, porcelain veneers and crowns, and dental implants to replace cracked, crooked and worn down teeth. Most of the techniques used today are very conservative and some require no tooth reduction at all. Your appearance can be changed without surgery to a more youthful look. A look that will enhance your confidence and self esteem and allow you to enjoy life more. Q – What are Preparation-less veneers? A – In certain indications the appearance of your teeth can be transformed through preparation-less veneers. Most people think your teeth need to be cut down to achieve this. With the technology and laboratory support we have today, your teeth can look years younger by using minimally invasive techniques. Our focus is to keep your teeth intact. Q – What role does the laboratory play in the overall appearance of the teeth? A – It is very important to choose a team that is high level in every way. Enhancing the cosmetics of the front teeth is a very difficult procedure, which requires a lot of skill. Prosthodontists are specialists in this area. We work with high-level laboratory technicians who have advanced training in these concepts. Most people do not know that Prosthodontists exist. Prosthodontists are specialists in cosmetic, implant and reconstructive dentistry. A prosthodontist will look at many things before starting treatment to ensure as well as cosmetic improvement, the patient will obtain a result that has longevity Q – What impact does a cosmetic procedure have on the patient? A – Enhancing the appearance of the teeth increases a patient’s self- confidence, self-esteem and the way they interact with others. Of the thousands of patients we have treated, the only regret a patient has had is that they did not do it sooner. During the holidays patients always want to look their best. Q – What makes Anacapa Dental Art institute Different? A – At Anacapa Dental we are Specialists in Cosmetic and Implant dentistry. “I WAS FIGHTING TIME. MALARIA IS A DISEASE THAT CAN KILL YOU WITHIN HOURS.”

A

SA REPORTER, I’M USED TO BEING THE STORY! TELLER NOT THE STORY.

The tables turned when I went to Tanzania in 2009 to film a documentary (Tanzania -A Journey Within). We spent several weeks in a village, living off the land with a local tribe and sleeping in a traditional hut. It was thrilling until I got too close for comfort with one of the world’s deadliest creatures: the mosquito. She gave me malaria. Malaria starts with a fever followed by extreme joint pain – like a hammer smashing my joints. I knew nothing about malaria, only that a daily malaria pill is needed to protect against it. I took my pill almost every morning, but as luck would have it, the day I skipped my dose, I was bitten by a malarial mosquito. Malaria comes from a female mosquito bite. This mosquito is infected with malaria, and mostly found in Africa. Pregnant women and children are most at risk of dying from malaria. Malaria kills a child every minute. A child will be playing soccer during the day, and be dead by night. For adults, malaria can keep people out of work for several months, unable to provide food for their families. Malaria is responsible for more than half a million deaths every year, mostly children under five. I was fighting time. Malaria is a disease that can kill you within hours. It took me six hours on a cramped, hot, smelly bus to get to the nearest city hospital. The pain only began to subside after the cool medicine pumped through my veins. I was on an IV for four days, lucky to be alive. At that moment, I learned how threatening malaria is. The price for life-saving treatment and care was just $7. That was inexpensive to me, but a high price to pay for many families in Africa, who survive on less than $1 a day. I immediately felt my calling.

On the 20 plus hour flight back to America, it hit me… Buy A Bracelet. Save A Life. I purchased a handful of beautiful beaded bracelets, made by women in Tanzania, to give to friends and family. Instead of just giving them away, I started asking for donations to raise funds for the lifesaving malaria treatment. My best friend, Anna Wascher came on board, and the concept took off! We now have over 100 women in Tanzania working on bracelets every month. These women had no source of income beforehand. On the malaria front, we have provided life-saving medicine for over 22,000 people suffering from malaria, in Tanzania. Anna and I go back as often as we can to help purchase and deliver medicine to rural areas, as well as expand our product line with the women. I have personally seen how much of an impact we can make. Malaria can be prevented and treated. The US eradicated malaria in the 1950s through sprays and medicines. There are groups like Malaria No More offering preventative tools to communities, like mosquito nets and sprays. Bill Gates is funding research to find a permanent cure, a vaccine. Because of my experience, I found it important to focus on the treatment side, so that when someone gets malaria, they have a fighting chance, just like me. For every bracelet we sell, we are able to save a child suffering from malaria by providing the same life-saving treatment I received. Take it a step further; we are also supporting the women of the region with a source of income, so that they can provide a healthier life for their families. There’s no reason children should die from this. We can make a difference, one bracelet at a time.

DR. GREGORY ALBAUGH

Q:

A:

MANY WOMEN FIRST DEVELOP VARICOSE VEINS – OR FIND THAT THEY GET WORSE – DURING PREGNANCY. As your uterus grows, it puts pressure on the large vein on the right side of your body (the inferior vena cava), which in turn increases pressure in the leg veins. Veins are the blood vessels that return blood from your extremities to your heart, so the blood in your leg veins are working against gravity. When you're pregnant, the amount of blood in your body increases, adding to the burden on your veins. And your progesterone levels rise, causing the walls of your blood vessels to relax. You're more likely to get varicose veins if other members of your family have had them. They're more common in women than men, and if you have them, they tend to get worse with each successive pregnancy and as you get older. Being overweight, carrying twins or higher multiples, and standing for long periods can also make you more susceptible. The good news is that varicose veins tend to improve after you give birth, particularly if you didn't have any before you got pregnant. And if they don't get better, there are a variety of ways to treat them. To help your veins while pregnant:

Does pregnancy cause varicose and spider veins?

• Exercise daily. Even just a brisk walk around the block can help your circulation. • Strive to keep within the recommended weight range for your stage of pregnancy. • Elevate your feet and legs whenever possible. Use a stool or box to rest your legs on when you're sitting, and keep your feet elevated on a pillow when you're lying down. • Don't sit or stand for long periods without taking breaks to move around. • Sleep on your left side. Wedge a pillow behind your back to keep yourself tilted to the left and elevate your feet with a pillow. Since the inferior vena cava is on the right side, lying on your left side relieves the vein of the weight of the uterus, thus decreasing pressure on the veins in your legs and feet. • Wear special support hose. Graduated-compression stockings, which are twice as thick as normal pantyhose, work best. These stockings are available from medical supply stores and pharmacies. They're tight at the ankle and get looser as they go up the leg, making it easier for blood to flow back up toward your heart. As a result, they help prevent swelling and may keep your varicose veins from getting worse. After you give birth there are many non-invasive options to treat the way your legs look and feel. Be sure to consult a specialist for an evaluation and to discuss your options. www.coastalvascularcenter.com

DR. MARC KERNER

Q: What is the difference between Botox and Fillers?

A:

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable product that improves the appearance of facial lines that arise from muscle contractions. These are called dynamic wrinkles. When injected into these muscles it temporarily weakens these muscles. The result is that the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while untreated facial muscles contract normally, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. The effects wear off within 3-6 months, which is why Botox is not a permanent solution for wrinkle removal. FILLERS Fillers are materials that are injected into the skin that add volume to the skin and underlying tissues. There are numerous fillers that can accomplish the desired result of filling fine lines and wrinkles, and replacing volume in the face. Among these are: JUVÉDERM - a hyaluronic acid injectable gel that is excellent for filling wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth. It adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother appearance to the face. It lasts 6-9 months depending on how much is injected. VOLUMA® - is another hyaluronic acid product that is designed for filling large areas of the face such as the temporal and midface hollows. It can last up to 2 years. RESTYLANE® - is another hyaluronic acid product that restores volume to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and lasts 3-6 months. RADIESSE™ - is a filler material made from calcium hydroxyapatite. It can be used to replace soft tissue loss in the nasolabial folds and midface region. It can also be used for acne scars. It also lasts approximately 1 to 2 years, depending on the area injected. SCULPTRA AESTHETIC™ - is a safe effective injectable material that provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness and is used for the correction of fine lines, wrinkles, and tissue loss in the midface and temporal region. It works by stimulating your tissues to produce more collagen, which results in more tissue volume. T

HE BEST NUTRITION FOR OPTI! MAL HEALTH CAN BE a maze

of information with new research trumping last year's popular trends. New buzz words like gluten free, bad oils, sugar epidemics and plant based are common key words. What was the most highly searched diet term on the Internet this past year? Paleo. It is the foundation of a world renowned healthy lifestyle founded in Malibu called The Primal Blueprint. There is one nutritional plan that has survived popular trends and given humans optimal health for literally....10,000 years. Mark Sisson, fitness expert, trainer, author, educator and Founder of The Primal Blueprint, refers to it as "Eating Primally." Mark states, "I am very certain that 80% of your body composition’s success is determined by how you eat." Forget every conventional health lesson you've learned about the standard American diet and grains. As Mark explains, "Let's look at this base knowledge through a new lens." Ignore the notion of powering up on carbs for a long intense workout and consider a new paradigm. Let's learn the real facts about grains, carbohydrates, saturated fat, and sugar. Eating Primally has two simple premises. First, grains are not particularly healthy -they are unnecessary and often function as anti-nutrients in the body. (Anti-nutrients are natural or synthetic compounds that interfere with the absorption of nutrients). Second, the body prefers burning fat instead of carbohydrates.

The Primal Blueprint is a lifestyle. While many health plans are simply diets that have a beginning and end, Going Primal is a lifestyle that brings optimal health, longevity, happiness, energy and many health benefits, including hormone balance, increased bone density, decreased body fat, increased muscle mass, self regulated appetite and the LGN factor (Mark refers to as Looking Good Naked). Let's learn more! What exactly do grains, gluten, carbohydrates and sugars do to harm our health?

MARK SISSON / 33

Insulin at normal levels is the "master hormone for its critical and comprehensive role in transporting nutrients from the bloodstream into the cells in your body, but some of its most important action takes place in muscle and fat cells. High insulin levels wreak havoc in many ways. Cholesterol and triglycerides become oxidized and inflamed, initiating the process of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Hormones get out of balance, including melatonin and serotonin cycles. And insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes." (Source: The Primal Blueprint 21 Day Total Body Transformation). Powering up on carbohydrates is clearly not the way to prepare for your exercise routine, reduce fat, get energized and be healthy. Why eliminate grains? Grains have been a part of the American diet for generations. But with the onset of foods from genetically modified organisms (GMO's) and processed food ingredients, more and more people are experiencing problems that trace back to grains and gluten.

FLAVIO SCORSATO PHOTOGRAPHER

There are three (3) basic reasons for eliminating grains from your diet. 1. Grains elicit a high insulin response. 2. They have far less nutrition than meats, vegetables and fruits. 3. Grains contain anti-nutrients that can promote inflammation and compromise digestion and immune function. These include lectin, gluten and phytates.

Listen closely...this really makes sense. The most important reason to reduce carbohydrates is that carbs stimulate higher insulin production. Your insulin levels rise and store the excess carb calories (as well as those from fats and protein) as our arch enemy -- FAT. What happens then? Often people will power up on carbs and exercise more attempting to reduce fat. The body burns sugar and continues to store the fat. Those love handles grow even bigger after all your hard work exercising! It's an endless cycle with disastrous results.

"I AM VERY CERTAIN THAT 80% OF YOUR BODY COMPOSITION’S SUCCESS IS DETERMINED BY HOW YOU EAT."

Inflammation is the root cause of many chronic diseases. Eating Primally reduces inflammation. It helps you take control over conditions such as chronic pain, obesity, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, migraines, thyroid issues and cancer which are all related to inflammation. Sugar is "the ultimate affront to your genes -- it promotes systemic inflammation and causes an instant suppression of immune function," explains Mark Sisson. No diet is as nutrient rich as Primal Foods -healthy, natural, meats, vegetables and fruits. An easy guide to Eating Primally is Mark Sisson's book "21 Day Total Body Transformation." He guides you through easy action items to primalize your kitchen and fridge by eliminating grains, legumes and sugars from your diet. Mark Sisson has written seven books to help you live your healthiest life. Coming soon is Primal Woman by Carrie Sisson, which represents the long-awaited female conversation on all matters of primal living. ANDREW J. KAUFMAN M D , FA C P

Q:

A:

My skin is so dry and itchy in the winter. What can I do to improve it?

THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT LEAD TO SKIN DRYNESS IN THE WINTER MONTHS. When the weather is cold, winds are blowing and you’re using your heater to heat your home and car, your skin tends to dry out more. As we get older, the water content of our skin decreases and some people (e.g. those with eczema) are particularly prone to dry or itchy skin. First thing is to try to limit showers to 10 minutes or less and use luke-warm or tepid water. Longer showers with hot water tend to dry out the skin more. Use mild or moisturizing soaps or non-soap cleansers. Colloidal oatmeal baths can also soothe the skin. When you step out of the bath or shower pat the skin dry with a towel and apply a moisturizer immediately to trap some of the moisture within the skin. Good moisturizers tend to be bland and thick (e.g. Eucerin, Vanicream, Vaseline) and help to hydrate and maintain the skin’s barrier function. If your skin is particularly dry or itchy, apply a moisturizer two or more times during the day. Adequate moisturizer use will mitigate the need for topical medications. In the event that hydration and the use of moisturizers do not control the symptoms of dry or itchy skin a dermatologist can prescribe a topical ointment or cream. Usually this is a prescriptionstrength topical steroid, but there are also nonsteroid alternatives. Frequently, the short-term use of a potent topical steroid relieves the itching and inflammation and allows the skin to heal and the barrier function to recover. Oral antihistamines may also relieve itching and provide relief. To maintain your skin, apply a moisturizer every day; wear cotton and soft fabrics and avoid rough or scratchy fabrics, and try to spend time every day relieving stress, either through exercise, yoga or meditation. www.dermatology-center.com

Tanzanian Coconut Bean Soup “Wali Wa Nazi” W R I T T E N B Y N I R U PA S E J PA L

MC DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014

TANZANIA, ON THE EAST COAST OF AFRICA, is known for

its tropical beaches, great lakes, huge game areas, and majestic snow-capped Kilimanjaro. I watched the sun rise over Tanzanian plains east and south of Kilimanjaro. A few rows of puffy morning clouds raced through a complete tour of the color spectrum, beginning with icy purple-blue and peaking with fiery red. We were looking at the wildlife that looked back at us. The elephants chewed and flapped their ears. The lions squinted and yawned. The hippos twirled their ears and ducked under the water. I was up at dawn to watch elephants cross the river as I waited for breakfast. Here I had Tanzanian Coconut Bean Soup; I dipped into the ugali (made from cassava) with the three fingers of the right hand, and once you have mastered this you will find the taste of the food quite different. You discover how to “work” the stew and vegetables into a loose ball of the right texture so that you can bring it to your mouth without dripping, all the while listening to the elephants scratching their backs on the tent ropes.

GARNISH • 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped, 1/2 cup red onions, sliced, and lemon wedges

•METHOD

• Heat saucepan over medium heat and add olive oil. Add the onion and fry, stirring frequently until brown. Stir in the broth, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, bell pepper, coconut milk, curry powder, chili powder, salt and pepper. Increase the heat to medium and bring soup to a boil. Add the beans and brown rice and boil for 7 minutes. Add coconut and simmer for 5 minutes, then remove the saucepan from the heat. Garnish with cilantro, red onion slices and lemon wedges.

WRITTEN BY KATHLEEN ROSENBLATT

Health for Sex; Sex for Health

“...STIMULATION HAS BEEN FOUND TO COUNTERACT CHRONIC BACK AND LEG PAIN, REDUCE MENSTRUAL CRAMPS, ARTHRITIC PAIN, AND IN SOME CASES EVEN HEADACHES.”

MC DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014

H

EALTH FOR SEX; SEX FOR HEALTH was

the title of a lecture I gave at the Conscious Life Expo two years ago. With a title like that, people were sitting in the aisles to hear this subject! Well we all want to learn more about how a healthy mind and body can improve all human activities, including sex. But studies show that in turn sex itself can improve overall health. Since the right use of sexual energy is such a critical health factor, it was included in my workshop, Given the increasing stresses in our lives, many women and men at age fifty are already burned-out and feeling non-sexual, non-orgasmic; feeling over the hill and throwing in the towel. Often, they are also sluggish, achy, depressed and a bit overweight. On the other hand, many women in fifties and sixties are reporting ever-increasing numbers of orgasms and sexual responsiveness in general. What is happening here? Why a cumulative effect? Are they simply feeling more entitled to pleasure than their mothers did? Exercising more than their mothers? Less hampered by birth control than their younger selves? Refusing to pay attention to their numerical age? Following the wisdom that the ever-unfolding years bring—that joy can be truly ever expanding? Growth actually DOES continue--if rightly attended to? There are many reports on the overall benefits of sexual arousal for the human body. Vaginal stimulation has been found to counteract chronic back and leg pain, reduce menstrual cramps, arthritic pain, and in some cases even

headaches. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that men who ejaculated frequently (at least 21 times a month!) were less likely to get prostate cancer. Joseph J. Pinzone, MD cites a landmark study on how sexual intercourse specifically (not masturbation) lowered systolic blood pressure. The list goes on... There are excellent herbal formulas to support the adrenals and other endocrine glands so that more energy is available--for life and for sexual activity. There are methods for propagating the feel-good hormones that have been suppressed in our systems for so long—ayes to produce total body exhilaration, as a prelude to sex or for its own sake. Every organ takes part in the sexual experience, and the polymorphous pleasure receptors in every cell can be further activated--with or without sex. The currents up the spine can get fully charged. Everything gets enhanced! And when we handle sexual energy intelligently and intentionally, we create more psychic and physiological force. This could be the moment in history when the superficial disconnect between our ''higher'' selves and our primal physical body will become an unnecessary and obsolete dichotomy. With some recalibration, we can enjoy the sensuous embodiment of all our energies—both the subtle transcendent spiritual dimension reintegrated with the somatic, instinctual, sexual forces. No longer a dysfunctional, secretive split. Not celibate but celebrate!

AM VEERA, AND I HAVE BEEN AFRAID OF WATER PRETTY MUCH ALL MY LIFE, THAT IS, BEING IN THE DEEP END. AS A CHILD I DID NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN HOW TO SWIM, AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL A WOMAN TOLD ME TO STAY AWAY FROM WATER BECAUSE I WILL DIE IN WATER. SO, I TOOK IT TO HEART AND BUILT THIS FEAR THAT GREW WITH AGE. THE STRANGE THING IS THAT I LOVE WATCHING WATER. SOMEHOW I AM MOST PEACEFUL WHEN I CAN SEE WATER. THAT IS THE REASON I BOUGHT A HOUSE WITH THE OCEAN VIEW. With all my new friends in Malibu, most of whom are always either swimming, paddle boarding, or surfing in the ocean, I started feeling bad about sitting on the shore and not enjoying experiencing the vastness of the waters right in front of me. When my friends said, “The Ocean calls me,” I could almost understand. The ocean did call me, all the way from Michigan to Malibu. I started feeling the pull more and more. So I gave in to my friend Tony Sterns’ (Radfish) offer to teach me paddle boarding. Of course he had to teach me to swim first. So, now I am learning how to swim and stand-up paddle boarding with him. I am excited that I am finally letting go of my fear and have started honoring and loving myself. As soon as I decided to conquer my fears with selflove, something amazing happened. I met Gisele Lubsen. Gisele is an underwater photographer. Gisele is an artist and her commercial work has a conceptual art-like quality. She

loves the timelessness of beauty and likes to create whimsical dreamlike art that brings out emotions in everyone who sees it. Her fascination with the power of performance led her to her first underwater shoot in 2006 while she was working on her Masters Degree in Fine Arts & Photography at Otis College of Art and Design. She photographed eight women underwater. Her objective was to show the courage of women, redefining reality, dreams, fears, hopes and the past. Her figures, submerged in a frozen, dreamlike state, were the result of her sensitivity to the feeling of life. She works with models and celebrities, with fashion lines and companies, with children and even horses. She loves to work with big productions just as much as she loves working on a one to one level. Gisele told me that about a month ago, when she came to Malibu, the only magazine that caught her eye was Malibu Chronicle. She liked the quality of the magazine and the fact that, it said ALL GOOD NEWS. She says she found it very unusual to be so inspired that she wanted to learn more about the magazine and its publisher. She checked us online, and our Facebook page. As she read my blogs and saw my photos on a stand-up paddleboard she realized that I was in the process of overcoming my fear of water. She felt a strange connection and liked my FB page. I happened to be online at the time and saw her site and could not help but be fascinated by an underwater photographer. So I liked her page. Like two curious cats sitting on our computers we started sending short messages back and forth and within a week I was at her house falling in love with the underwater portraits displayed everywhere! Gisèle is able to humanize her

subject, creating an alternate reality within the light and dark, creating a surreal world of the aquatic environment. Both of us felt an instant connection and mutual admiration. We have both lived in and overcome some similar life situations. As scared as I was of water, we talked about the faraway crazy possibility of someday doing an underwater shoot with me. Gisele’s calm, confidence and preparedness gave me faith that I will be safe with her. She believes that water is healing, but one has to be courageous! Two weeks later, we were at the pool at Tivoli Cove Condos in Malibu ready to do the shoot. I walked in the water trusting her and myself. I was ready to let go of my fears. I love myself enough to not live with limitations. We were in the water, mostly underwater, for three and a half hours. Gisele made me feel comfortable. She was underwater holding her breath with me. She came up with me. I felt a sense of sisterhood and loyalty. Credit it to Gisele and her team that I sometimes forgot I was underwater. I never knew that I could be so free underwater. She and her team told me later that sometimes they ran out of breath before I did. I guess I won’t say I am afraid of water anymore.

WINES FROM BAJA

W R I T T E N B Y M A R C U S S A LV E M I N I

WINES FROM NORTHERN BAJA’S GUADALUPE VALLEY A love for wine brings the Mexican culture to life in ways we’ve seldom seen. The vision behind the wine making culture that has evolved in a valley just 10 miles east of Ensenada, came from Hugo D’Acosta, who, about 20 years ago, began teaching many grape farmers in this unique region how to make wine, rather than sell their grapes to a large wine producer or on fruit stands.

n No more than fifteen minutes drive from the center of Ensenada, and one hour from the US-Tijuana border, the Bed & Breakfasts that some of these boutique wineries have spawned are unbelievably special in their own ways. Once you take the time to go into the valley and explore the various wineries, restaurants, and other unique places such as the Wine School and Wine Museum, you are likely to want to come back for more. It was these attractions that drew my friends and me to visit the valley and dine at some of the best restaurants in the area. I have a group of friends that come down here to the Baja to surf, but after surfing blows out around noon, we go exploring around the area looking for local food and good wine. The Guadalupe Valley, as we discovered, has plenty of everything and then some… and now we’re regulars. MC DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014

This story got a jumpstart after I had discovered these wineries and fell in love with the wines and the valley overall. I contacted one my closest friends, Youssef Benjeloun, in San Diego, who for the past 24 years had been importing “boutique wines” into the US from his home country, Morocco. Having introduced the first Moroccan wines, and some of the best Lebanese and French wines into the US over the past 24 years, Youssef began to develop a plan to establish an “importing relationship” with the best producers in the Guadalupe Valley. “There are over 100 wineries”, says Youssef. These wineries benefited from the latest technology in wine production over the past 10 years and some of the best winemakers in the world are serving as consultants. Tours are also available to the best Wineries as well as to the Wine

Museum and the Wine School, with plenty of stops at the wonderful restaurants for lunch and dinner. The tours include a one-night stay at a Bed and Breakfast, and run from Saturday morning to Sunday evening with pickup at the border if requested. Wine prices range from $12 to $50+, and with plenty of variety so that you are bound to find something to fall in love with. B&B prices vary from $125 to $275 a night, with lot’s of options to choose from. Wine varieties include all the usual suspects like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Grenache, to name but a few. “It’s finally the culmination of many years of work and wine making talent that has allowed this to grow so rapidly”, says Hugo D’Acosta, the man who many consider the “Robert Mondavi” of the Guadalupe Valley. “We are looking forward to sharing the fruits of this unique valley with the wine lovers in America”. After a year of tasting and carefully selecting the best wines, a full selection will be widely available in California.

For questions and to learn where you can find these wines, go to www.Volubilis2000.com.

Thoughts Define the Person

A

HUMAN BEING IS CONSTITUTED OF SPIRIT AND MATTER. Spirit is the supreme Self known as

Atman in Sanskrit and God in English. And matter is composed of the body, mind and intellect. The combination of the Self and the body, mind and intellect creates the human. Every human being has the ability to identify with any one of the component parts of his personality. When he thinks all the time of the body he becomes a physical personality. And when he identifies more with emotions he would become an emotional personality. Likewise, with the intellect, an intellectual personality. People through their lifetime relate to the material equipments and assume limited personalities. Rare indeed is one who identifies with the Self, contemplates upon the Self within. And among the rare few who pursue the Self, scarcely one reaches the state of Self-realisation, attains spiritual Enlightenment, the ultimate Goal of human existence. Thus humans as a whole identify with material layers of their personality and meander aimlessly in their lives. They merely pursue the demands of the body, mind and intellect. And are lost in the outward glamour of the mundane world. They ceaselessly try to find pleasure, peace and happiness from perceptions and actions of the body, emotions and feelings of the mind, thoughts and ideas of the intellect. Few realise that none of these efforts can provide them with the inner satisfaction and contentment that they seek. They fail to understand that the seat of true happiness lies in one’s inner Self. The eminent philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer, has pronounced this truth succinctly: It is difficult to find happiness within oneself, but it is impossible to find it anywhere else. Nevertheless the entire humanity rushes outward to find peace and happiness. And their efforts are directed to finding it through acquisition and indulgence.

This is an excerpt from Swami Parthasarathy’s 2014 book The Holocaust of Attachment. In October of 2014 Swami Parthasarathy visited Los Angeles to conduct a seminar entitled Path to Prosperity & Peace, discussing how the ancient principles of Vedanta can be employed to bring both external success and inner peace. Two students of Swami Parthasarathy’s Vedanta Academy in India conduct study classes, seminars and retreats on Vedanta in the Southern California area. From The Horse’s Mouth: HOW HORSES CAN TEACH US EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

T

Kate & Lindsay the horse

HE IDIOM “STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH” MEANS THAT WE RECEIVE THE FACTS AND INFORMATION DIRECTLY FROM THE MOST DEPENDABLE

AND TRUSTED SOURCE. As a life and career coach who specializes in equine-assisted personal development, I find this idiom fascinating and accurate. From my experience, this is exactly what a horse does when we partner and work with people on the ground in an equine coaching session. Horses operate as mirrors. They simply reflect who we are and what we need to see. They have a gentle yet powerful way of telling it like it is, without any judgment or any expectation for change. In many ways, they are the perfect coaches and therapists. Horses have an effective and clear communication system that consists mostly of body language. They are prey animals so they are sensitive and completely aware of everything in their surroundings. Due to this, they have a unique and profound way of showing us how we can have a deeper awareness of our environment and communication systems. As human animals, we also communicate non-verbally. When people ask a horse to move in an arena they have to be present in their bodies and communicate with clear intention or a horse simply won’t take them seriously. Horses test our boundaries and our leadership and by doing so make us better people. Horses also acknowledge authenticity. All of nature is actually a representation of authenticity. A flower never tries to be anything other than a flower and neither does a horse. When clients speak from their heart

and release challenging emotions like grief or fear, the horse is fully present and next to us. When we go into our heads and try to figure things out they often walk away and are no longer interested. It is a gamechanger when they move us out of illusion and back to truth. One story that illustrates this is when I facilitated a large corporate team (I also work with the general public) and most of the group could not achieve the goal in one of the exercises except for one woman. This woman was terrified of horses. She owned her fear and feelings out loud and moved forward anyways. The horse willingly followed her directions and she quickly accomplished the goal. The rest of the group was inspired by her courage. I told her that if she could face her fears here then she could face them anywhere. She learned that being vulnerable yet courageous and owning her feelings were her success strategies. When people come to work with a horse there is no hiding. We communicate our personality, our weaknesses and our strengths often within the first five minutes of being with them. The arena is just a metaphor for our lives. The relationship with the horse is a metaphor for other relationships. We have so much default programming and the horses help surface our old stories, limiting beliefs and behaviors that no longer serve us. Then we can look at and test new choices that create better results in our lives, ones that make us happy with what we see in the mirror.

Whose Fault Is It Anyway? POLICE REPORTS & COMPARATIVE LIABILITY

ECENTLY MY PART! NER BRIAN CARNESS OBTAINED an excel-

Brian was able to get policy limits from the driver’s insurance and the rest of the settlement from the motorcyclist’s uninsured – underinsured motorist insurance. Brian obtained this result in spite of the police report naming our client at fault – and therefore liable – for the accident. As most bicyclists and motorcyclists in particular know, they are very likely to be named at fault in an accident. Often officers seem to have a built-in bias against bikers and cyclists, and frequently officers are not aware of laws that may affect these two groups. What few people know is that a police report is considered “hearsay,” meaning the police officer did not see the accident himself. However, the officer can testify as to statements made and physical evidence. It’s still a good idea to file a police report if you’re in any type of motor vehicle accident. Though the police officer’s conclusions may not always be accurate, they usually get the basic facts (such as insurance information, witness information, where the accident happened, speeds of vehicles), which can be very helpful when we begin investigating your case. But what about the situation where maybe you were, at least partially, at fault? California recognizes comparative liability. This means that if both parties are to some MC DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014

degree liable for an accident, the jury or judge can apportion a percentage of liability. If compensation is awarded, the defendant only has to pay the percentage that matches your liability. Here is an example. Let’s say you rolled slowly through a stop sign instead of making a full stop and are hit by a truck that doesn’t stop at its stop sign. You suffer serious personal injuries. We investigate the accident and find that the truck’s brakes had not been serviced for a year and there were numerous reports from drivers that the brakes were bad. If this case went to court, the jury or the judge – depending on whether or not it was a jury trial – might determine that the trucking company was 80% liable for the accident and you were 20% liable for the accident. If Olan Law obtained a $100,000 verdict for you, the trucking company would only have to pay 80% of $100,000 or $80,000. The truth is, it is unlikely that you can determine if comparative liability is applicable to your case. Only an experienced trial lawyer can really evaluate your case to determine the merits of your potential case. That’s why Olan Law always offers a free, noobligation consultation to potential clients. Drive safely out there.

Breakfast Club –

Wings Over Wendy’s

Pictures of fighter jets and war memorabilia aren’t the typical décor you expect to see on the walls of a Wendy’s restaurant. Packing the restaurant are members of Wings Over Wendy’s (WOS), a club for military veterans that has been going strong since 2002. That’s when Fred Blechman, a Corsair fighter in the navy, and Mickey Epstein, an aviation engineer, happened to meet. Soon more veterans joined them, and within three months 12 guys were getting together every Monday to swap books, magazines and stories about flying. WOW now includes 200 members who have served in all branches of the military in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. At one time, WOW included three World War II German flyers who had become American citizens (they have since passed away). One of them, Mike Karatsonji, an ME-109 pilot, reluctantly joined the Luftwaffe when he was forced to choose between flying for the Germans and going to a concentration camp. “It’s the nature of the beast,” said WOW member Michael LaVere, a former B-24 navigator.” Wartime makes people do a lot of things they don’t want to do.” As with many of the men, LaVere, 89, knew exactly what he was fighting for. “As a Jewish person, that which Hitler was trying to do was something that I FOR MORE NEWS GO TO MALIBUCHRONICLE.COM

wasn’t going to let him do. Every bomb we dropped, we put little signs on them – this is for you, Adolf,” he said. The leader of the pack is Art Sherman, 93, a B-24 bombardier, intelligence officer and self-proclaimed frustrated comedian. A natural master of ceremonies, his levity and humor are infectious, setting the lively, fun tone for the meetings. WOW member Allyn Lewis was a 21 year-old first pilot with the Army Air Corps when he flew a B-17 over eastern Belgium on April 4, 1945. Lee Levitan flew on a B-26 Marauder medium bomber. Because of its design, it was a very difficult aircraft to fly and experienced many crashes on take-offs and landings. It was given the name of “widow maker”, and Lee

says he was not really concerned because at that time he was only 19 years old and did not have a wife. WOW members also perform community service together, believing that you’re never too old to serve your country and make it better. “We try to do our best for the public and are honored when people come and thank us for our service,” Sherman said. “When we speak to kids at schools, I tell them that the real heroes of World War II are in the cemeteries over in Europe and the Far East, because they are the ones that did the most and gave their lives so that the kids today can have their freedom.” The kind of bonding that takes place through WOW serves a core need, according to Jonathan Sherin, executive vice president for military communities and chief medical officer at Volunteers of America. “Because of their repeated trauma of being moved around and then being exposed to life-threatening experience as a group, that need for fellowship is significant. It can only be provided by other veterans, as it’s not something that your family or a clinician can understand and communicate.” “The amazing thing,” Sherman said, “is that we became fast friends. We give everyone a reason to live; it’s a joyful place. People can let their hair down, if they have it – and not too many of us do.” DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014 MC

A Picture Suddenly Crashed! A HOT HUMID DAY, MID#SUMMER’S DAY, SUDDENLY THE PICTURE FRAME CRASHED. THE SUPER SUCCESSFUL COMEDIAN ROBIN WILLIAMS HAD SUCCUMBED TO THAT DREADED ILLNESS: DEPRESSION.

OW DID THAT HAPPEN WE ASKED, someone

who had made us laugh how could he not laugh himself out of his troubles? Why we asked, again and again, where had things gone wrong? Why could someone who had access to world’s resources not be able to get help? There are no easy answers we at Mai Family Services know, but we keep asking, keep learning, keep educating but most of all keep reaching out so that help is accessible however helpless, hopeless we feel. Our clinical team frequently helps clients and tries to diffuse the myths that surround mental health. In a recent Huffington Post, writer Alena Hall addresses a number of these misperceptions; a brief summary is offered here with some observations pertinent to our community. Myth1: Depression and Sadness are the same. A sad mood lifts, but depression can last for a prolonged period. 2. It is a sign of weakness: Stigma associated with depression prevents people from seeking help. A complex mental health disorder has biological, psychological and social consequences. 3. Life’s crises cause depression: There could be reactive feelings of hopelessnesshelplessness but events like death, divorce, terminal illness do not lead to depression.

MC DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014

4. It’s not a real illness: Mayo Clinic reports people with depression experience physiological differences in their brain and have neurotransmitter and hormonal imbalances that determine the condition and its severity. 5. It’s all in the head: The National Institute of Mental Health tells us insomnia, fatigue, unusual changes in appetite, chronic muscle ache or chest pain can be symptomatic of underlying depression. 6. Real Men do not get depressed: There are differences in how men and women exhibit depression. In the South Asian community cultural pressures often prevent men from admitting that they could be depressed. Alcohol or other substances complicate issues and men are more successful in committing suicide. 7. It is genetic: Recent research questions the extent of the role hereditary plays.

8. Medication is all that you need: Antidepressants are not the complete answer, combined with psychotherapy, people can find more effective relief. 9. Medication will be needed for the rest of your life: For an estimated 40%, psychotherapy works better than medication, but each person needs to be assessed to determine what medication will work and for how long it should be administered. 10. Talking about it will make it worse: Supportive proactive conversation can help the individual deal with the stigma and encourage them to seek help.

The splintering of Robin Williams’ image may be a wake-up call. We many not be able to put his picture back together but let us prevent another image from crashing.

RIDING THE WAVES

MC DECEMBER.JANUARY 2014

T

HE KICK!OFF SESSION OF PEPPERDINE’S NEW PUBLIC FORUM, Riding the Waves, was attended by

an enthusiastic audience that included Malibu community residents, university students and lovers of America’s true art form, Jazz. The desired verbal exchange between honored guest, legendary guitarist Kenny Burrell, and Law professor and flugenhornist Bernie James and eager attendees was amazingly successful. The strains of Burrell’s guitar artistry and his insights into the history of jazz were both entertaining and enlightening. Professor James complemented Burrell with his story of a lifetime devotion to jazz and his trumpet. Both expressed their consternation regarding the lack of public support for the art form and their disdain for those who insist on placing jazz in a Top 40 context. “Jazz is the essence of democracy, said Burrell.” “Equal opportunity for all regardless of race, creed, color, or social circumstances. It is ingrained in all phases of our country’s existence and incorporated in every kind of music ever played or sung throughout our history. It’s a mixed bag of musical humanity, individually, collectively and creatively expressed.” Both Burrell and James insist that the key to appreciating jazz is the understanding of improvisation. Webster defines the word ‘improvise’ as the act of composing and performing or delivering without previous preparation: to extemporize. Further explanation includes speaking, playing, reciting, or singing, etc., on the spur of the moment. As it applies to jazz, Burrell and James had this explanation: like any person who is a trained musician looking to enhance their ability to play an instrument or sing a song, one must respect the structure of the composition; that includes key signature, tempo, chords and harmonic progressions.

Once you understand those demands, you can “Walk right in, sit right down, baby let your mind roll on.” “Some got it, some don’t got it.” Burrell is a master of creative musical expression and technique. Pepperdine is grateful for his dynamic visit.

spoke proudly of the new Fire Station 71 dedication held on Sunday November 14th. The community came together to celebrate. The fire station is now state of the art, providing the crew & fire engine a larger living area. Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby were responsible for finding the budget to make it happen. They were aware that it was a necessary improvement. Many citizens were concerned the remodeling would leave the neighborhood vulnerable and unprotected. The safety of the residents was always observed. Firefighters were temporarily housed at the Zuma Fire station location, close enough to respond to any emergency. Firefighters kept up their daily training to stay fit and sharp plus they continued their education on medical and trauma skills.

The active firefighters were happy with their old station, there was always the proper equipment, but the cramped station, built 75 years ago, didn’t allow for much rest or team building. “Meals in the station are a very important part of a fire station as it creates comradery”, said fire fighter, Case, “it was missing before because of a tiny kitchen.” Now, with a larger kitchen, the spirit of friendship can continue to build despite the difficult nature of the job. There is now room for rest; each firefighter has his or her own private room. Plus, there are separate male and female showers. Previously the engine was housed under a tent, and wouldn’t fit on the apparatus floor. Now the engine fits right in. Artist Matt Doolin of Topanga Art Tile created beautiful mosaic tile doors welcoming the community to visit the new station.

OVE YOURSELF BY BEING HONEST WITH YOURSELF.

Be honest about what you really want. Pay attention to your feelings. Know what makes you happy and what makes you unhappy. “Happy” is a very good measure for knowing what is good for you and what is not good for you. If something or someone makes you unhappy, it is not good for you. It is your job to remove that out of your life. Life brings you to a decisionmaking fork in the road almost every day. Decisions can be minor, like what to wear, or decisions can be life changing, about whether to stay in a relationship or not. If I look back on my life and how I made my decisions, I realize that all the decisions I made while honoring myself, and making sure I was happy with them, were the good decisions in the long run. Whenever I chose to make someone else happy over my own happiness, I ended up hurting myself and regretting those decisions. To make positive decisions for ourselves, we have to know what we want and what is good for us.

It is very important to make a specific list of what we want in our lives. Knowing what we want in the long run will help us make a list of things we need to do now, so that we keep moving closer to and in the direction of our goals. Suppose you are looking for a job. Make a list of exactly what kind of job you want, how much money you want, what title do you want, how soon do you want to be at that position, what is the location, how big or small the company should be, etc. If you are looking for a soul mate, what do you exactly want in a soul mate? Be specific to the smallest detail. Be open and in a receiving mode. And trust it to happen. Do not doubt the possibilities. Watch the universe bring to you exactly what you want. If you love yourself enough, and feel free to want and enjoy the blessings, you will never allow yourself to be a victim. You will never be satisfied with living someone else’s life. Make decisions that are right for you, and that make you happy. You are an Empowered being. L.I.V.E. like one!!
