POSILOSOPHY
POSILOSOPHY (The Way To A Best Life)
™
Posilosophy……Posilosophy…… Posilosophy! If you can say it - you can live it. What Is Posilosophy?
Well, you know that a philosophy is the practical wisdom or personal independent opinion by which each of us live, and you know what it means to be positive. So….Posilosophy is about maintaining a positive philosophy throughout your familial and independent life in order to keep your feelings and your fitness finessed and your all around well-being at a zenith. That doesn’t mean you will never worry, cry, or feel low at times, about some things or happenings (or nonhappenings), but living with a positive philosophy and striving to maintain an upward view of all that surrounds you, can keep you alert and remind you to pry yourself away from the dangers of negativity and a stressed cranium.
‘If your brain is stressed, it can’t be blessed’ {and leaves you messed}. You know that. But perhaps you never paid attention. You do have a choice you know. Whether you want to be a positive person or a negative one is up to you. If you tend toward negativity……how’s that working out for you? SO PICK ONE. We Are Often Our Own Worst Enemies.
We can change that and thereby change our lives. All we have to do is start to pay attention. Did you know that everything you think, say, or do, gets registered in your subconscious? Well, it does. You don’t need to pay a therapist to tell you that if you want to be a winner THINK winning. And if your psychosis is headed south- try to reverse your direction by yourself and save your money. You may be just

dabbling with a bit of negative thought and a smidgeon of less than erudite thinking but the subconscious collects it all. It takes everything as a directive from you. Even if you’re spouting off a bit of semi-destructive verbiage and think you’re just joking around, your subconscious will lead you to making it happen. The subconscious takes everything you say literally. It has NO sense of humor. So Don’t Get Caught.
Create a canvas of optimism in your mind-wear. Do your best to bleach out any negative thinking while painting in the positive. Share enthusiasm with those around you, with your friends and family. You’ll see that it’s catching. Hardly anyone is immune. You can be the one to emotionally light up a room. Sometimes we humans devote so much time and energy reminding ourselves of what hasn’t jelled or isn’t jelling that we neglect to retaste the fruits of our life. That’s where the real gelatin of our thinking should be. In our posilosophy. Don’t tolerate unhappiness. Experience connectivity. Attitude Is Everything.
Does your attitude need altering? Posilosophy lets us understand we can be alone and not lonelyWe can be our own best friend. And we can prevent illness from destroying usMy sister, though encased in a wheelchair, was always mentally ready to dance. Posilosophy instills an acceptance of who we are, where we are in the scheme of things, and encourages our innate abilities to push us toward growth. It reminds us no-matter who
we are or what we’ve accomplished, there is always room for improvement. And anything is possible. If we’re seeking to make changes in our social life we must realize not everyone thinks, acts, or reacts as we do, or would, or as we would wish them to, in certain situations. Remind yourself that even in your own biological family, everyone opines differently. No two snowflakes are alike. Learn to insert yourself in another’s mukluks and lace up your understanding. If we’re looking to make changes physically, a posilosophy can present reasonable directions toward goals that let us see THE body we’re working for in our mirror-mind. Although it’s not necessary to adorn our faces with a perpetual smile, the right attitude often will invite the smile of another, even a stranger, to generate one of our own. And don’t be territorial. Resenting sharing friendships is selfish, and can cost you your amigo connection. And expressing territorial pique when others demonstrate talent in your particular zone shows insecurity. Accept that there is space on the planet for all of us and all of our friendships, ideas, desires, ambitions, and our successes. And to you newlyweds. Should your partner get riled easily over insignificant things, don’t give away your power by losing your temper. Maintain harmony by letting your posilosophy keep you easy going and safe from argument. Happiness resides in tuning out the bad vibes and fine-tuning the high notes.

Feeling, thinking, and seeing in your mind all that you strive for. Imagining your goals and desires reached and accepting the lows as well as the highs enmeshed in the steps that will take you there. & THAT’S POSILOSOPHY. tional pull towards items that make you feel comfortable in your lifestyle. Never wear something you aren't comfortable in. Comfort is the number one importance when dressing. It affects the way you are able to "rock" or carry your outfit. Comfort leads to easy confidence and allows you to act relaxed, walk confidently, and think peacefully. Learn to appreciate and practice an aesthetic balance of textures, colors and shapes. Pay attention to the harmony of lines and contours along your silhouette and down the center of your body. Fashion is Art after all so all the same principles apply. Fall in love with the art world in whole and study all forms, enveloping you in these principles until it becomes your subconscious. “Trends” are a unique accent piece of an outfit that is usually made popular by a celebrity model. They flood the scene and are the most popular detail for a season or two and then wash away. The trend is either updated or replaced by something a bit more exciting. Trends correlate exactly with the mood of society. This means it can be affected by weather, world news, movies, a musical performance, new technology, etc. Be social with the world and join in the conversation. Be in touch with the universe and there you will find “swag.” This word actually fits this article perfectly because it stems from “swagger” which is a noun for easy confidence and comfort in ones environment. Now-a-days, the trendy word “swag” is used in conjunction to a clothing style, or an outfit. Comfort and fashion must go hand and hand! To know what you’re comfortable in, be in touch with YOU. Know your favorite colors and embrace your lifestyle. When mimicking a style you've seen and have been inspired by, make sure you throw your own "swag" on it. Personalize it with an item that’s special to you, sleek accessories can help, but be sure to never overdo the outfit. Simplicity is important. Balance is key!

LASORDA & THE HAWK WRITTEN BY TOMMY HAWKINS
If I were asked to name the top ten most unforgettable characters I have encountered during my lifetime, high on that list would be the incredible Hall of Famer, Tommy Lasorda; the Dodgers Baseball Ambassador to the World.
*
Tommy Hawkins and Tommy Lasorda - Sydney Olympics 2000
The only man in baseball history that during a span of six decades has served a single Major League Baseball organization as a player, scout, coach, Minor and Major League manager, and Executive Vice President. He is simply one of a kind. I first met Lasorda during the early 1960s when I was a member of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Cincinnati Royals, a proud teammate of all-time great, “the Big O”, Oscar Robertson. Lasorda was “moonlighting” during his off-season as a (believe it or not) fill-in NBA official. No one ever forgets meeting Tommy Lasorda – he is gregarious, personable, energetic, outspoken, openly competitive, challenging, verbose, and in-your-face – all in one glorious package. We reconnected in the mid 1970s when I was a sportscaster for KABC radio, the then flagship station of the Dodgers’ broadcast network. Lasorda had been called up from his highly successful Minor League managerial position in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to become the Dodgers third base coach under manager Walter Alston. Becoming a member of Tommy Lasorda’s inner circle is both an honor and a serious challenge: lots of heart-to-heart exchanges, stories galore, and plenty of in-your-face locker room talks. It is no place for the weak or sensitive.
Little did I know that in 1987 I would be hired by Dodger owner, Peter O’Malley, as the team’s Vice President of Communications. For the next 18 years, Lasorda and I forged an airtight friendship challenging each other every step of the way. Both of us were big on establishing and maintaining strong community relationships. We constantly bickered as to who was the better public speaker. During a 12 year period between the two of us, we gave over 2,000 speeches, both locally and nationally. We frequently shared the podium – I’d introduce him as the Sultan of Slim Fast, the Mahatma of Motivation, and the Pied Piper of Pasta. He, in turn, would bring me on as the player hired by Lakers owner, Jack Kent Cook, to carry Wilt Chamberlain’s luggage. Nothing personal, mind you. The audiences loved it. We even made it a trio by adding to the mix, USC baseball coach of the century, Rod Dedeaux, – billing ourselves as Frick, Frack and What’s His Name? Lasorda, who didn’t graduate from college, loved to point out that he had received three honorary doctorate degrees and I had none. Responding to his attempted put-down, I emphasized that I had a legitimate Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame. So what did I need with some meaningless honorary degree that carried no weight and probably wasn’t worth the tissue paper it was printed on. Amused by my reply so aptly spoken, Lasorda shot back “Nevertheless, until you get your first honorary doctorate, please address me as Doctor Lasorda.” He walked away smiling in a state of heightened pomposity. In 1999, I was named Notre Dame Alumnus of the Year and was the recipient of the prestigious Sorin Award. This was a major honor I felt I could shove up Lasorda’s nose. Returning from Notre Dame with my beautifully gold-framed hardware in hand, I arrived very early at Dodger Stadium and immediately went to Lasorda’s office. I placed my 12” x 24” award smack in the middle of his desk with a sign at the bottom that read: Top This! All morning Tommy made it a point of not contacting me or acknowledging my brilliant execution of one-upmanship. When I returned from lunch, on my desk turned face down was my Sorin Award and on top of it, encased in a hand carved frame, on exquisite parchment paper, was a blessing personally inscribed to Lasorda from the Pope (in Rome). At the bottom, he placed my original sign: Top This! There is no end to this competitive madness. The beat goes on. Thomas Charles Lasorda, unforgettable? You bet.

Employment Matters
As an employment lawyer who represents individuals in wrongful termination cases, I get calls all the time from people wanting to know if they have a case against their former employer because they were fired.
• Discrimination because of race, gender, age, pregnancy, disability, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin. • You were fired after complaining about discrimination, sexual harassment, or overtime. • Your employer is retaliating for your whistle blowing (filing a complaint against your employer for breaking the law). • You were fired for taking time off for military service. • You were fired for having a long-term illness or because you took time off when your child was ill. • You were fired for reporting or refusing to perform in an unsafe, unhealthy or illegal work environment (such as not being allowed meals and rest breaks). • You refused to break the law at your employer’s request. This includes reporting fraud to a governmental agency by your employer. • You helped organize a union. • Your treatment at work was so harmful that you sustained serious emotional injuries.
DON’T LET A BAD BOSS INTIMIDATE YOU
If you were fired for one of the reasons above, it is doubtful that the company is going to come out and tell you so. They will attempt to make your firing or lay-off sound as legitimate as possible. Your supervisor might even convince other employees or supervisors to make complaints about you. Maybe, after a long history of positive evaluations, you suddenly get a written notice of warning. PROTECT YOURSELF
If you do not have an employment contract, California is considered an “at-will” state. This means that just as you can quit your job at any time, your employer can terminate your employment at any time. Your employer does not have to have a reason to fire you. He does not have to be “fair.” He can even
fire you for a reason that isn’t true. All of these actions are legal. EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE
Yet even as an “at-will employee,” there are certain reasons you may be fired which are considered wrongful termination. Some of the most common illegal firings or lay-offs include:
If you think you are being set-up for a wrongful termination, begin keeping a written record of the events surrounding your firing. Keep track – in writing – of dates, locations, and names of those involved in performance reviews, off-hand comments, commendations and reprimands about your work. Keep these notes in a safe place. And not at work! You’ll also want to make a written complaint to your supervisor or to the company’s human resources department. KNOW YOUR LEGAL OPTIONS
If you think you have been wrongfully terminated, contact a wrongful termination attorney as soon as possible. The truth of the matter is that employment law is complicated. It is doubtful that you will really know if you have a wrongful termination case until you speak to an employment lawyer. That is why I offer a free, no-obligation consultation. This allows you to know your legal options in order to make an informed decision about how you want to proceed.

SPIRITUAL,
Since founding Park West Gallery in 1969, Albert Scaglione has completely transformed art collecting. By mixing his passion for art with ingenuity, innovation and hard work, he’s raised the level of excitement in fine art collecting by taking art outside of the traditional gallery walls and making the Park West Gallery experience available to the world. Peter Max, Yaacov Agam, Linda le Kinff, ItszakTarkay, LEBO, Csaba Markus, Romero Britto, Scott Jacobs and child prodigy Autumn de Forest are just a few of the celebrated artists represented by Park West Gallery. Through Park West’s gallery and business centers in Michigan and Florida, galleries and private engagements in exclusive hotels, and onboard gallery and auction experiences on more than 90 ships, Scaglione and his company have opened the door to art collecting to more than 1.4 million customers in 70 countries.

ALBERT SCAGLIONE GETS IT. HE GETS THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP PEOPLE HAVE WITH ART. By Kristine Stewart Hass
He gets that collectors appreciate their art at a deeper level when they connect with artists and hear their stories. He gets that taking fine art out of the gallery and bringing it directly to the people opens not only the doors of opportunity for his business but for more people to experience the genuine enjoyment of owning fine art. He also gets that hard work and discipline pay off in business and in life. He credits his discipline to his father. “I started working with him hauling industrial waste at the age of eight and stayed at it through the beginning of college,” he said. “It gave me a great work ethic – which has translated into my family and business, as well as my attitude toward fitness. “Fitness is for life,” he says, confessing his approach to well-being is more strategy and less philosophy. Since founding Park West Gallery 45 years ago, he’s been a man on the move, building his business and innovatively transforming the way fine art is bought and sold around the world. It’s an understatement Trainer Billy Beck says with a guy like to say he’s naturally energetic, a trait Albert Scaglione – who has so much going on – a workout begins with a that’s served him well for many years warm up that requires undivided attenconsidering his jet-set lifestyle. But about tion. Some people walk on a treadmill for a warm up – for Scaglione, Beck 15 years ago, Scaglione decided to priorisays he lets him go “all Rocky Balboatize his fitness by making it part of his style” on a speed bag. “You can’t hit a speed bag without being 100-percent regular routine. there,” Beck said. “I work out daily with maybe only one or two days off in a week,” Scaglione said. He sticks to a healthy protein-rich diet, eating four or five smaller meals each day. He also keeps well hydrated, drinking five to six liters of water daily. “My diet is typically right on when I'm at home either in Michigan or Florida, and by making an effort, I can usually keep my diet right even when traveling,” he said. < CONTINUED ON PG. 24 >

SPIRITUAL, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL COALITION
Scaglione’s fitness regime has long included strength training and swimming. When in Florida, he works on cardio and strength training with Miamibased fitness expert, Billy Beck.
THE PROWLER: Albert pushes the lead-weighted prowler through an outdoor course. Beck said he likes a circuit to be functional. “The prowler gives you the opportunity to gain real strength, working the muscles you may actually use in life,” he said. The prowler also offers a combination of cardio and strength training.
BATTLE ROPES: This exercise is done in 30-second intervals, alternating in intensity.
SLEDGE HAMMER/WAR HAMMER: As Albert warms up in his upper body circuit training, he moves from swinging a sledgehammer to the heavier war hammer.
“My greatest challenge isn't motivating Albert to work out, it's getting him to stop," Beck laughed. He adjusts the workout depending on Scaglione’s travel schedule, making sure muscles have adequate rest and recovery time. “Albert does much of the same workout I use to train some of the NFL players I work with. He’s in great shape,” Beck said. “Albert always gives me entrepreneur-to-entrepreneur advice,” Beck said. He said he appreciates the questions Scaglione asks, offering Beck a mental workout. “He makes me think more, and makes me a better person because he’s inspiring,” said Beck. “He’s the type of 24 MC APRIL.MAY 2014
person I’d like to be when I’m his age.” Scaglione keeps up with strength and cardio workouts in his home gyms and when traveling. “I can usually find a gym somewhere, making it relatively easy to maintain some form of training,” he said. “At the minimum, I can always do certain exercises in my hotel room.” A few years ago, recovery from rotator cuff surgery introduced him to yoga, and he’s been a fan ever since. He favors Bikram Yoga, which he practices at Detroit Bikram in Farmington Hills, Mich., but he also does Ashtanga yoga. “Yoga is amazing to combine with strength training,” he said, adding that it's absolutely necessary for flexibility. “The benefits of combining yoga with strength training for my overall general health and well-being are immeasurable,” he said. “I feel great, and at my age, am able to keep up with my busy schedule and play volleyball and other sports I still enjoy.” It’s only Scaglione’s life story that betrays his age. Born in 1939, the New Jersey native can reminisce with the best about an all-American childhood on the heels of the Great Depression and Second World War. You can picture it “Yoga is amazing to combine with strength training. It's absolutely necessary for flexibility.”
Catholic school nuns, hard-working parents, errands for mom to the corner store, knowing the neighbors with the cookies and those whose grass you had to keep off, squeaking through high school (because he was too busy earning money), and the satisfaction of buying his first car – a 1956 Olds Ninety-Eight convertible with a Continental kit. So even after you hear the stories and imagine him as a kid on the set of Ozzie and Harriet, when he’s standing in front of you, it’s hard to connect the dots and get that this guy is closing in on 75. At 30, with a doctorate in mechanical engineering, Scaglione had a career epiphany of sorts. He had been teaching college courses and researching for a NASA Mars exploration program at Detroit’s Wayne State University, when government funding shifted from space to defense. His passion for his work changed, so he decided he’d follow suit and change careers. With a leap of faith and a little experience (he worked at a cousin’s art gallery as a teen), he mortgaged his house and in 1969 opened Park West Gallery in Michigan. That original 900-square-foot space is not far from where the current 63,000-square-
Albert and Peter Max
foot Greco-Roman style gallery sits today. (Park West Gallery also has a gallery and 181,000square-foot, business, framing and distribution center in Miami Lakes, Florida.) Within just a few short years, the charismatic Scaglione established relationships with prominent artists, including the father of kinetic art, Yaacov Agam, and pop art icon, Peter Max. Scaglione took his concept of holding fine art auctions regionally, then nationally, then eventually to the world. Park West Gallery now sells art at hundreds of locations worldwide on cruise ships and at exclusive hotels. Scaglione’s passion for his faith, family and work motivate him to keep fitness right near the top of his daily todo list. He starts his day with an hour of prayer, and then he exercises before tackling the day. “It is the total spiritual, physical and mental coalition that really makes it all work,” he says. His advice to others? “Mental discipline and a consistent steady routine, and when things are not going right or you're not completely consistent, don't give up. Go right back at it,” he said. “The benefits of a better quality of life are priceless.” Billy Beck is an inspiring leader and in-demand speaker, trainer and coach. As president of the highly innovative and inspiring BB3 Personal Training & Performance Center located in Weston, Fla., Billy’s expertise is sought worldwide and has been featured on NBC, CBS, Fox and ABC as well as on the pages of Men’s Health, Men’s Journal, the Pittsburgh PostGazette and dozens of other magazines, radio shows and interviews. He is the author of “LEAN & Mean: Fat Burning Secrets of the World’s Best Personal Trainer.” Beck and his team deliver unprecedented results to everyone from the professional athlete to the weekend warrior. Billy’s mission in life is simple but a powerful one – “To make our world even more awesome.”

foods available. Mainstream grocery stores are stocking really good raw, vegan, and organic protein bars, crackers, and gluten-free snacks. The one thing I think trips a lot of people up is that they don't plan ahead properly. It can be as easy as throwing a handful of protein bars or an apple or a banana in your glovebox. SOME PEOPLE SAY A MEATLESS DIET IS RABBIT FOOD FOR HIPPIES. THEY VIEW NONMEAT DIETS AS RESTRICTIVE AND WONDER HOW YOU CAN "GIVE UP" SO MUCH. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THOSE PEOPLE?
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SHOW! DO YOU FEEL MEATLESS EATING AND THE LIFESTYLE YOU PROMOTE HAS FINALLY FOUND ITS TIME?
I do, absolutely. I think if you look at the growth of not only the organic food industry, but also the percentage of vegan and vegetarian families and, more significantly, the number of consumers identifying themselves as eating more meatless meals, it has had nothing but an upward bell curve over the last 25 years. The whole crux of what I'm doing professionally as a chef and a t.v. host is that I want to encourage people to have fun and play with and eat more fruits and vegetables. The more fresh, locally grown, and plant-based foods we eat, the greater our shot at longevity and a much more happy and healthy life. EXPLAIN RAW COOKING.
Raw is utilizing ingredients in their completely unprocessed, uncooked state. Sushi is a raw food, but the type I specialize in is completely plant-based, working with completely unprocessed ingredients and also living foods. Living foods involve things like sauerkraut and cultured vegetables, kefir, yogurt, probiotics, which are actually full of beneficial bacteria and cultures that are good for our digestion. YOU'VE WORKED WITH MANY CELEBRITY CLIENTS LIKE WOODY HARRELSON AND SIGOURNEY WEAVER. I IMAGINE, LIKE MANY OF US, THEY BLAME THEIR BAD DIETS ON INCONSISTENT HOURS, DONUTS IN THE MEETING ROOM, OR NOT HAVING TIME TO COOK/EAT HEALTHY. ARE THOSE VALID EXCUSES?
I don't think any excuses are valid. My whole crux is to allay and massage any of the fears or excuses people have because we live in a time where there are so many healthy and nourishing convenience 28 MC APRIL.MAY 2014
I understand because we are all highly conditioned to the foods we grew up with. The cultures of food I grew up with were Polish and Puerto Rican—neither of them the healthiest ethnic diets. However, the really interesting thing I found when I was transitioning away from a standard American diet in my early 20s was I was blown away by the number of ingredients, fruit and vegetables, cheese, snacks, and all these things I'd never heard of, so I honestly found it was the inverse. Plus, you can literally name any single product a typical American grew up with, and there's not only a healthy plantbased, zero-cholesterol version now, but it tastes amazing; you don't have to feel you're giving anything up in terms of taste or texture. IS A RAW DIET SAFE FOR KIDS?
I've had a lot of friends that have raised their children completely vegan and even now gluten-free because you're seeing a lot of children who are having massive food allergies based on what's going on in the food supply or perhaps their genetic lineage. As long as parents are extremely mindful of having conscious, balanced nutrition, that's the key. Making sure that the protein levels are high enough, that there's enough gamma-linolenic acid and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids for brain development. Making sure there's enough fiber and anti-oxidants. Basically anything that a child would need nutritionally to develop safe and healthy through their childhood can be obtained on a vegan, dairy-free diet. WHAT'S A HEARTY RECIPE YOU WOULD RECOMMEND IF YOU'RE TRYING TO ENSURE A CARNIVOROUS GUEST LEAVES FULL AND SATISFIED?
I think the three things that people are looking for when it comes to satiation is: fat, sodium, and protein. Something like a grilled, portobello steak with a side of sweet potatoes and chickpeas with some sliced avocado on top; tons of protein in there, really meaty and dense, and has

that great mouth feel. One product that I love to do is tempeh—a fermented soy that has tons of protein and has probiotics as well. The one recipe I've gotten the most feedback about was from my t.v. show with the cauliflower-lentil tacos. People have been going berserk for it. IS THERE A VICE YOU ENGAGE IN OCCASIONALLY?
Chocolate...The answer is always chocolate. The one commonality of people I've interviewed over age 100 is that they eat dark chocolate consistently. Dark chocolate has a rich abundance of magnesium, antioxidants, and phenylalanine, which is that bliss chemical that gets released in our brains when we're in love. If you're going to indulge, indulge in dark chocolate. YOUR MESSAGE IS MORE THAN JUST ABOUT HEALTHY COOKING. YOU WANT PEOPLE TO HAVE FUN AND LIVE LIFE TO ITS FULLEST. IF SOMEONE DOES JUST ONE THING TO CHANGE THEIR LIFE FOR THE BETTER, WHAT SHOULD IT BE?
The best thing people can do for their long-term health—mental, spiritual, physical, emotional—is to take more time to nourish themselves. Just take 60 to 90 minutes out of each day to give to yourself. And you can do it. I've worked with people with unbelievably busy lives, and the ones that have the most success and are healthiest set the proper boundaries, carve the time out of their day, and nourish themselves.

HEALTH TIPS
10 TIPS
TO PREVENT VARICOSE & SPIDER VEINS
4
Exercising, especially by biking, swimming, and walking, can help to improve the circulation in your legs and prevent varicose veins.
5
By quitting smoking, you help increase the circulation in your entire body, including your legs. Quitting smoking will help to avoid high blood pressure, which is also associated with the development of varicose veins.
6
7
Varicose veins are large blood vessels that show up underneath the skin on your legs. As unsightly as they are,
they can also indicate serious health issues including poor circulation, and can lead to the weakening of the blood vessel walls and cause severe pain. Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They also are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. Often, they are red or blue. They can look like tree branches or spider webs with their short, jagged lines. Here are 10 tips to help you prevent varicose & spider veins by maintaining healthy circulation in your legs:
1
Reducing your weight is one way to prevent varicose veins. Extra weight and strain on the legs is one of the major causes of varicose veins, so getting down to a healthy weight will be as beneficial to varicose vein prevention as it will be to other aspects of your health.
2
3
8
Females should avoid high-estrogen birth control pills and hormonal supplements to prevent varicose veins. Estrogen in high amounts has been shown to change your circulation, which can contribute to the development of varicose veins. Avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time. Even moving your legs slightly helps increase your circulation. Wear low-heeled or flat shoes whenever possible, and clothes that aren't constricting to your legs and waist, in order to keep the circulation going in your legs and prevent varicose & spider veins.
Try to avoid standing for long periods of time in order to prevent varicose veins from forming. The added stress on your legs puts stress on the veins and can cause varicose veins to form if you're not careful.
9
Since you can't avoid standing completely, you can help to prevent making varicose veins worse by wearing compression stockings that help improve your circulation. We recommend that patients wear a 15 mm Hg to 20 mm Hg pressure hose every day. With larger varicose veins your physician may prescribe up to 30 mm Hg to 40 mm Hg pressure.
If you find that these tips 10 aren't enough to prevent varicose & spider veins, consider seeking a consultation with a vascular specialist. There are minimally invasive medical treatments designed to treat varicose & spider veins to keep you looking and feeling your best this summer.
Kick up your feet and relax awhile! By elevating your feet above your heart for a period of time each day, you can help prevent the development of varicose & spider veins.

REASON
EXTRACT FROM THE ETERNITIES: VEDANTA TREATISE BY SWAMI PARTHASARATHY
REASON, THE SAP OF VEDANTA
The faculty of reason is a human prerogative. It arises from the ability to think. All other beings lack this faculty. Reason makes a human the chef d’oeuvre of creation. But few care to
develop the art of thinking, reasoning. People do not seem to realize that thinking is skilled work that you need to learn and practice. On the contrary you believe that it is a natural process like breathing or eating. That you can think clearly and accurately without putting in the necessary effort on your part. It is not so. If you are to develop the faculty of thinking, reasoning, you need to devote as much time and effort to it as you would to learning any other skill. In the world today few have developed the art of thinking. People are possessed with groundless beliefs. Propositions are accepted without question as a matter of course. Their beliefs rest upon superstition. Or someone’s mere assertion. They bear no proof. Do you
32 MC APRIL.MAY 2014
realize that many of your strongest beliefs had taken root in your childhood? Now as an adult you find it difficult to question their veracity. They seem to be obviously true. You feel even to question them would be absurd. Take the example of two men professing different religious beliefs. One a staunch Hindu and the other a devout Christian. They were born the same day in a maternity ward forty years back. The attending nurse committed a colossal blunder. She mistakenly exchanged the newborns in their cradles. The Hindu baby was placed in the Christian mother’s cradle and the Christian in the Hindu mother’s cradle. And the two children were brought up unknowingly with the opposite domestic, social and religious influences. You could imagine the natural consequence. Both have now grown up holding beliefs totally opposed to their original family and religion. And each now swears by his particular belief! William Drummond remarks: He who cannot reason is a fool; he who will not is a bigot; he who dare not is a slave. With these facts in mind, look at the present-day world. One set of people is hawking spirituality with their own views. Another set is blindly accepting them. Religion has been reduced to mere parroting of ideas picked up from preachers. Neither the preacher nor the pupil can claim to have gone through any systematic study and research, reflection and absorption of the truths of life. People are confused and confounded. In such an irrational state of affairs how can there be any spiritual edification? The world remains as poor as ever morally and spiritually. People are afflicted with worry and anxiety. They undergo mental strain. Suffer from stress. This has been a perennial problem with human beings. The world must wake up from its slumber. You must start thinking, questioning, enquiring, and reasoning with the truths of life. The philosophy of Vedanta satisfies the tests of reason and logic. It complies with the principles of sound judgment. The truths that are acceptable to your intellect you should apply in your life. Verify their authenticity. Then you begin to taste the joys of higher and more chaste living. With your personal experience you would delve deeper into the essence of Vedanta. Attain peace and happiness. STEM CELLS
STEM CELLS:
YOUR NATURAL RENEWAL SYSTEM Stem cells constitute one of the biggest discoveries of modern medicine, with promising applications for a large number of health conditions. But while most discussions

34 MC APRIL.MAY 2014
revolve around the techniques of isolating and injecting stem cells in order to treat diseases, recent discoveries are revealing how stem cells are able to change not only the way we treat diseases but also our understanding of disease formation, the very way we view health and wellness, and how we’ll eventually practice medicine. While most articles found in the media and in scientific literature talk about stem cell injections, a vast body of new scientific literature has emerged over the past decade revealing that the stem cells in our own bone marrow play a crucial role in maintaining the body’s vitality and optimal health; bone-marrow stem cells constitute the natural process of tissue repair and renewal in the body. We lose all kinds of cells everyday, and it is the role of stem cells to replace these cells. Stem cells are literally the natural repair system of the body. In medicine, we have long viewed disease as a slow process of cellular loss, whereby symptoms develop when cellular loss has passed a certain threshold. For example, diabetes results from the loss of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, a slow

process that becomes clinical when the loss of cells exceeds roughly 60%. Likewise, the loss of retinal cells leads to macular degeneration, the loss of thyroid cells to hypothyroidism, and the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain to Parkinson’s disease. In this manner, virtually all degenerative diseases are the result of the loss of a specific type of cell. Therein, disease formation is widely accepted as being the slow process of degenerative cellular loss. But this view has left out a vast part of the bigger picture that has not been seen until recently. Stem cell research has revealed that virtually all tissues and organs of the body are in a constant process of renewal, with a cellular turnover rate varying according to the tissue from days to decades. For example, the pancreas can regenerate within 4 to 6 years, the liver within 2 to 3 years, the heart within 15 to 40 years, and the skin within a few weeks. The actual timeframe is irrelevant; what matters is that this constant process of renewal is a normal part of our physiology. Consider the pancreas, for example. A healthy 50 year old has lost/regenerated his or her pancreas many times over, yet still does not have diabetes. Therefore, cellular loss is not the cause of disease formation. Recent studies indicate that health is not just a path of slow decline, it is in fact a balance between cellular loss and tissue renewal. Diseases develop not when one simply loses cells, but when those cells are lost faster than they can be replaced by stem cells. The key parameter in the efficacy of our renewal system is the number of circulating stem cells available to participate in the tissue-repair process. Indeed, a growing number of studies have documented the link between the number of circulating stem cells and the development of various health conditions. For example, when counting the
% Control value Stem Cell Number
100
number of circulating stem cells in the blood of people with varying degrees of pre-diabetic conditions, a clear relationship emerged among the number of stem cells. People with impaired glucose tolerance had a 22% reduction in the number of circulating stem cells compared to a healthy population, while people with insulin-dependent diabetes had a 41% reduction. A similar relationship has been documented with erectile function. When the number of circulating stem cells was plotted against the International Index of Erectile Function in men complaining of
poor erectile function, a clear relationship was revealed. The lower the score, the lower the number of circulating stem cells. In other words, people with fewer stem cells had a greater degree of decline in erectile function. Likewise, a similar relationship has been documented with atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) to the point that vascular diseases are increasingly believed to be caused by a decline in the ability of stem cells to perform day-to-day repair or maintenance of arteries. Similarly, a lower number of circulating stem cells has thus far been associated with the
development of diseases like arthritis, heart disease, pulmonary disease, and kidney insufficiency. These important findings advance our understanding of health, wellness, and the very way we practice medicine so that for the first time we have a true understanding of how we can help maintain health and not simply prevent or delay diseases. With the discovery that the body has an innate system designed to keep the body healthy, it becomes obvious that supporting this natural process of tissue repair is the best way to help the body stay healthy. How can one increase the number of circulating stem cells and support their function in the body? Intense physical activity increases the number of circulating stem cells, so exercise regularly. Deep sound sleep is accompanied by the release of melatonin that has been shown to support stem cell proliferation in the brain, so do what it takes to get a good night sleep. Stress reduces the ability of stem cells to migrate into tissues and proliferate, so learn how to manage stress effectively, and as they say… don’t sweat the small stuff. And stop smoking, as cigarette smoke (and second-hand smoke) has also been found to reduce the ability of stem cells to migrate and proliferate. Finally, follow common wisdom and eat your fruits and vegetables, since antiinflammatory and antioxidant nutrition support the ability of stem cells to migrate into ailing tissues. We will discuss other specific foods and nutrients that have a direct impact on stem cells in the next issue. In the meantime, happy stem cell health!

BLAKE LEEPER
He has had to deal with the prejudice and stereotypes of being disabled though. His was a fierce, lonely, and oftentimes hostile road that made Blake Leeper the man he is today. "I can remember growing up and kids teasing me ferociously, calling me the ‘half student’ and ‘peg legs,’ and it hurt, but it also lit a flame inside of me to work harder than the next guy or girl, and that has stayed with me my entire life."
"WHEN MY BOYHOOD HERO SURPRISED ME ON THE ARSENIO HALL SHOW, I WENT SPEECHLESS AND NUMB. I WAS UNABLE TO PROCESS WHAT WAS HAPPENING FOR SEVERAL SECONDS." In 2006, Blake happened to walk by a TV broadcasting a show about Oscar Pistorius. Oscar had become the first double amputee to run against able-bodied athletes on a world stage. "I knew at that exact second," Blake said, "that this was my destiny. I did not know how hard it was going to be to make it happen, but I knew I had to make it happen." Blake started on a two year letter-writing campaign and convinced the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to fund a brand new pair of $40,000 carbon-fiber cheetah legs from the Icelandic company Ossur, the same prosthetics that had been made for Oscar Pistorius. Blake was told to manage his expectations, but

he took that as a challenge. Blake decided it was everyone else who would have to manage their expectations. "When I ran for the first time on my new legs, I felt invincible! It was a feeling I have never even dreamed of, and I knew in my heart I could be the fastest man in the world with no legs!” In 2012, Blake qualified for the U.S. Paralympic Team and was headed to London. He was not only going to be racing for his country at the highest level, he would be racing side by side with Oscar Pistorius on the world stage. "It was all so surreal walking into the stadium for the first time. The enormity and colossal size of the stadium was just awesome; it fueled me physically and physiologically, and I really had my first out-ofbody experience." Blake made history, winning a Silver and Bronze medal in both the 100- and 400-meter races. In less than 11 seconds, Blake's life changed forever—the “American Bladerunner” was born. Blake's star continues to rise dramatically. He has been interviewed on Good Morning America and Fox & Friends, and was surprised by Bo Jackson on late night’s Arsenio Hall Show. "When my boyhood hero surprised me on the Arsenio Hall Show, I went speechless and numb. I was unable to process what was happening for several seconds." It was a moment that will go down as some of the best television in history. Blake’s journey is in its infancy. He is still 24 months from qualifying for the Olympic 2016 primary games, but should he succeed, he will be America’s first double amputee in the primary Olympics. When I last spoke to Blake, he looked me square in the eyes and told me "Failure is not an option, I will see you in Rio!”

IRST OF ALL, I want to thank Sacha and Shanaz for bringing Kaishin, a beautiful and comfortable Chinese restaurant with great food, to the Malibu Colony. Kaishin is not just a restaurant; it is a place for feeling loved and welcomed. I admit I have to come here at least once a week. I don’t know how anyone can go without Kaishin’s Chinese food for too long. One of the celebrity customers of Kaishin wrote this on her Facebook page, “It’s the best Chinese food in Southern California.” I met Sacha, the owner, at Kaishin. He was in his usual, perfectly pressed, white shirt and dark pants. He told me that the hallmark of the design at Kaishin is its “open kitchen” concept. It allows people to see how dishes are cooked and how clean the kitchen is. An open kitchen also makes the chefs more conscious of their preparation. He wants to make sure that Kaishin maintains a high standard inside the kitchen as well as in the seating area. Kaishin also offers an inviting patio in the back for private parties that can accommodate up to twenty guests. It is the secret formula for the sauces that makes the difference. Kaishin’s focus is on healthy food, made with fresh ingredients, that is also tasty. The chefs at Kaishin are hired and trained based on Malibu residents’ high standards and expectations. Before opening the doors to the public, for three months Kaishin tried out all the varied dishes on family and friends in Malibu. The menu includes gluten free dishes, with no trans-fat and low sodium. And the food is not greasy! They continually receive enthusiastic compliments from their customers. One of the International Icons
of film and music, upon her visit to Kaishin, said that she had ordered food for pick up and liked it so much that she and her husband had to come dine in and check it out for themselves. Kaishin will soon have a Barbra special on the menu. Kaishin has a special children’s menu for little Emperors, and also a special Chinese menu for guests, like many of the Pepperdine students who are more comfortable with reading the menu in Chinese. Kaishin is very busy with take out orders. By popular demand, Kaishin now has full-time drivers who deliver everywhere from the Getty Museum to Trancas canyon. The only challenge for delivery is the traffic on weekends. At Kaishin, without sacrificing either the quality or the taste, they manage to maintain what are probably the most reasonable prices in Malibu. And the serving sizes at Kaishin are appreciably large. There’s always more than enough to eat and still take some home. Kaishin is a family restaurant, owned and operated by longtime Malibu residents. Their objective is to have healthy and tasty food so that every Malibu resident will crave Kaishin Chinese food at least once a week. Kaishin has come a long way since they opened their doors in April 2013. Sacha appreciates the support of Kaishin’s loyal customers. In this New Year, Sacha wants to make the dining experience at Kaishin even more enjoyable, so he is planning to add live music on some nights of the week. Stay tuned! And look for anniversary specials during the month of May at Kaishin! APRIL.MAY 2014 MC 39
PERSON OF THE MONTH CLAIRE FULLERTON
CLAIRE FULLERTON, AUTHOR OF "A PORTAL IN TIME” INTERVIEW FOR MALIBU CHRONICLE
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A WRITER?
For me, it all began with keeping a journal from a very early age because laying things down on paper helps one to organize their thoughts and examine their feelings. As one does so, one realizes there is a craft to the process and an art form in brevity; the right words in the right order that get to the heart of the matter. The focus came when I started to submit to publications. WHEN YOU ARE WRITING A NEW NOVEL, WHAT DOES YOUR DAY LOOK LIKE?
I center my day around writing. I treat it as my full-time job. I’m at my computer by 7:30 a.m. and work until around two in the afternoon, but I’m not glued the entire time. It’s a lot like keeping a stream of conversation active. I currently have a few balls in the air simultaneously. I am promoting one novel, preparing for the publication of another (to be released in early 2015), and am writing a new one. Towards the end of the day, I practice a combination of ballet/pilates/yoga because it’s part of a balancing process, and at the very end of the day, I heed the clamoring of our two German shepherds and take them to the beach. HOW DO YOU GET INSPIRED?
i

I typically draw from real life; that’s where the stories live. In the case of my novel, A Portal in Time, my husband and I checked into an historic hotel in Carmel, California. Framed photographs hung on the lobby’s wall, depicting the early stages of the hotel’s growth, beginning in the early 1900s. People wore period clothing and stood beside horses tethered to hitching posts, and I imagined myself living in that time frame. The graceful Mediterranean staircase caught my eye. I imagined myself in a room at the top of the
stairs, looking out a window at the garden below, and then a question came to me, “Why would I be drawn to the window?” A Portal in Time is the entire backstory to what drew me to that window. WHAT PROMPTS YOUR CREATIVE FLOW?
I think the creative flow is around everybody at all times. How one works is very individual; there is no right or wrong, but I think it all comes down to a passion for followthrough, in seeing a project to its completion. For that, one has to sit loose in the saddle with persistence and patience. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NOVICE WRITER?
Write how you talk to keep your voice authentic. Lay down the entire first draft without worrying about it, then go back and perfect it repeatedly. It’s not enough to have a good story; the art is in how the story is presented. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU DEVOTE TO WRITING?
I’d say a good eighty percent of each day! WHY DO YOU WRITE?
I like to tell stories, to entertain, to hand readers a story that may lend insight or perhaps consideration. I like the art of positioning words and the beauty of language. It’s all a search for perfection in the art of communication, which all people engage in every day. DOES IT COME NATURALLY, CAN YOU CALL UPON YOUR INSPIRATION OR DOES YOUR INSPIRATION CALL ON YOU?
It comes as naturally to me as the beating of my heart. I don’t know if it’s so much that one “wants to be” a writer. I think it’s more like one gets in touch with the fact that they are a writer.

ATHLETIC GOAL
“Improving an athlete’s mentality can help a good player become a great player. Mentally, you perform at a higher level.” -Tommy Shiba
ACHIEVING ATHLETIC SUCCESS: IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD As a high school hockey player, Steve Weinstein had ambitious goals. The Los Angeles teenager hoped to play for a Canadian junior hockey team and dreamed of going on to compete at the collegiate level. But, at 5’9’ and 140 pounds, Steve’s lofty plans seemed almost unattainable.
That’s before Steve met Jon Geiger, a sports-specific conditioning specialist. “If you don’t shoot for it, you’re not going to get near it,” said Geiger, who takes an unorthodox approach to helping athletes reach their full potential. “Be committed to a goal that you hold close to your heart,” said Jon. “I’ll help you believe in yourself.” Using a combination of “forensic detective work”, psychology, and physical training, Geiger crafted a personalized workout that focused on Steve’s unique needs. By graduation, Steve had gained 25 pounds of muscle and signed with a team in British Columbia to play Junior Hockey. But a few weeks into the season, Steve dropped weight and started losing confidence. “I doubted myself the first year. I was timid and didn’t play with confidence,” recalls Steve. When Geiger honed-in on Steve’s mental fitness rather than just the physical elements, Steve started seeing big changes on the ice rink. “Jon really pushed me to a place when I thought I couldn’t go any further,” said Steve.
During the final two years of Steve’s stint in Junior Hockey he played in 191 games straight, without injury, and helped his team win the national championship. Steve is now a freshman at Bentley University, outside Boston, where he plays for a division one team. Jon Geiger’s motivational fitness work has helped countless athletes at all levels of competition. “I saw a lot of improvements with my mental confidence,” says Tommy Shiba, a former varsity baseball player. He worked with Jon in an effort to get more playing time on the field. “Improving an athlete’s mentality can help a good player become a great player. Mentally, you perform at a higher level, “ said Shiba. Jon’s insightful guidance has caught the attention of some of the top scouts in the nation. “I’m impressed by the passion he has when he’s working with athletes,” said Mark Hughes, a Director of Scouting for the New York Knicks. Hughes, a former Detroit Pistons player, thinks Geiger’s focus on the mental aspects of fitness training sets him apart from the competition. “His vision is very special. His whole deal is helping athletes reach their full potential,” said Hughes, who believes working with Jon gives athletes an edge. It is important to work both on the mind and the body, which is the key to success! Jon works with your schedule, accommodates your location and helps children develop skills they will use in every area of their lives.

ABOUT REIKI
REIKI
UPLIFT YOUR THINKING WITH THE 5 REIKI PRINCIPLES:
"After a Reiki session, I come out feeling renewed with positive energy." -Leah Yenni
BY DR. MIKAO USUI
I
Just for today, I will not be angry.
II Just for today, I will not worry.
III Reiki, pronounced (“ray-key”), is a laying-on of hands, natural-healing technique thought to be thousands of years old. Originating in Tibet, the practice was rediscovered in Japan in the late 1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui, and then brought to the US in 1937 by Hawayo Takata. It is a very simple yet powerful healing art that can be used on yourself as well as others and can easily be learned by anyone. Practitioners channel universal life force in a particular pattern to bring forth healing and harmony.
Reiki is sometimes hard to explain because it is so simple and delicate. Yet it provides such a deep and powerful healing on all levels -- spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical -- that it transcends intellectual understanding. The word Reiki is derived from two Japanese words -- “rei,” meaning “Universal Spirit,” and “ki,” meaning “life-force energy.” The word Reiki, therefore, refers to a balanced cosmic and life-force energy. Because of its qualities of universal energy, Reiki seems to have a basic consciousness which, when used for healing, is able to provide exactly what is needed on all levels. Reiki treatments work by dissolving or eliminating toxic energy and substances from many levels of one’s being, whether it is physical, emotional, mental, or beyond. Reiki helps to create a harmonious environment within one’s being so true healing can take place.

REIKI SESSIONS ARE BALANCING
Anyone can use Reiki to strengthen well-being, and it can be especially useful for people with pain, anxiety, insomnia, depression, fatigue syndromes, or other chronic illness, as well as for those undergoing surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or treatment for addictions. After receiving a Reiki session, it’s not uncommon for the recipient to say, “I feel like myself again.” Reiki creates an opportunity for patients to restore inner harmony and a sense of connection with their inner selves that might seem lost during the whirlwind of the illness. While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures. During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the “Five Principles” of the Meiji emperor of Japan, whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
IV Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
V Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
Experience Reiki & find out more about this wonderful way to bring healing to self, family, friends, and community. Breathe. Unwind. Be You.

Dream weddings on Malibu beach ARGINE OVSEPYAN
LOVE IS TRANSPARENT…LOVE IS BOLD. IT IS BOTH SOFT AND STRONG WHEN WE COME ACROSS UNEXPECTED LIFE HURDLES, AND IS IN FULL BLOOM WHEN OUR HEARTS ARE OPEN AND WILLING TO RECEIVE. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE CAN BE SO POWERFUL THAT THEY INTERTWINE TO CREATE A NEW BOND THAT CAN LAST A LIFETIME. OF COURSE, WHEN THIS HAPPENS IT IS HUMAN NATURE TO CELEBRATE THE REAL LIFE MAGIC THAT APPEARS RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES.
The Sunset Wedding and Events team has been waving its wand for the past ten years to heighten mystical moments for brides and grooms traveling to Malibu from all over the world. The experienced staff has produced over 900 weddings, witnessed over 900 commitments, and created well over 50,000 memories. Known for its beach location weddings, the Sunset Restaurant is one of the only places in Southern California that gives couples the opportunity to have a legal beach ceremony with a full setup designed to their liking. Couples are given the flexibility to treat the venue as a blank canvas. “Every wedding we have hosted has been beautiful,” says Grace Rocoffort de Vinniere, the location manager. “ < CONTINUED ON PG. 48 >

Each ceremony and reception is unique with the flowers, chairs, and table layout. We give each couple the freedom to decorate however they’d like. We once had a safari themed wedding!” Located near the famous Point Dume, it is the ultimate photo shoot destination for beach wedding dreamers, with the waves of the Pacific Ocean, blue California sky, and jaw dropping cliffs as the backdrop for the ceremony. “The first time we exchanged ‘I love you’s, was at Point Dume overlooking Westward Beach”, shared Jocelyn Engstrom, a former Sunset Restaurant bride, “so it always held a special place in our relationship. Some good friends of ours had held their wedding reception there years before and it stuck in the back of my mind as a great place to get married.” The option to have the ceremony and reception in one place was also attractive to the then bride and groom to be. Bride Catherine Anaya’s love story also encouraged her to go the beach wedding route. “The short story is – we both love the beach. Doug proposed to me on the beach at sunset in St. Barts on my birthday, so we decided we should get married on the beach at sunset on HIS birthday,” she said, and that is exactly what they did. Upon arrival to the restaurant, guests are escorted to a beautiful outdoor patio for drinks, and then led onto the beach for the ceremony. Once the nuptials are tied,

all parties enter the reception area for dinner and dancing. One of bride Carolyn K. London’s favorite attributes of the venue was the food! “At our tasting we were blown away by the quality and taste of the appetizers and the main course that would be served at our wedding. We had decided on filet mignon and salmon, and they delivered these to perfection,” she boasted. The restaurant offers set menu packages including a variety of hors d’oeuvres and specially prepared main courses. Their chefs also create entrees, not found in the set packages, to satisfy unique taste buds with excellence. With a tremendous variety of glamour and elegance from which to choose, the Sunset team and their vendors cater to the wishes of all couples on their journey of love, supporting all aspects of their desires. With respect to the “location” wedding, the space is also a server of comfort and familiarity. Stephanie Bedan expressed it this way. “It was the first venue we looked into when we were planning our wedding and we immediately fell in love with it. The food was great, the restaurant was quaint, and the beach area where the ceremony was held had a very private, homey feel.” A destination that belongs on the big screen, a professional staff, and food that deserves a standing ovation combine forces to make what seems surreal, a reality for those who hold true love close to their hearts. When asked what aspect of her career serves her the most, Grace Rocoffort de Vinniere replied, “When I see the bride walking down the isle or watch her walk into the reception area for the first time, it makes me teary eyed. It makes me realize that I have honored and accomplished my duties to the bride.”

RELATIONSHIP
Son, You’re Getting Married Time for a Man-to-Man Chat
50 MC APRIL.MAY 2014
Congratulations. You’ve found your soul mate. She’s lovely. I hope the two of you will have a wonderful time sharing your lives together, building a home, raising fabulous children, and enjoying every inch of each other on your journey.
And I mean it. But there’s more. Here’s what you don’t want to hear, what you may think, in your current honeymoon haze, wouldn’t apply to you. But I assure you that any veteran couple would have my back on this. If you’re man enough to make that all-important decision to get married, then you ought to be man enough to prepare for the inevitable trials and tribulations, pain and suffering, and frustration and resentment that are part and parcel of a long-term, committed relationship. I don’t want to rain on your parade. But I do want you to have your eyes wide open so that you have the greatest chance possible to build the relationship you now envision, and not one that’s passionless or broken, like many relationships you’ve seen in your lifetime. The statistics on marriage are questionable. Although it’s been reported for years that over 50% of marriages end in divorce, researchers disagree on the veracity of the numbers. Nevertheless, anecdotally I can tell you that successful marriages (which I’ll define in a moment) are not a sure thing. In fact, if you’re not conscious, you’re likely to end up not particularly satisfied in your long-term relationship, at least based on the fear, ignorance, and resentment that have brought men and couples into my office to work on their unhappy unions.

THE STATISTICS ON
MARRIAGE ARE QUEST
IONABLE.
ALTHOUGH IT’S BEEN REPORTED FOR YEARS THAT OVER 50% OF MARRIAGES END IN
DIVORCE, RESEARCHERS DISAGREE ON THE VERACITY OF THE NUMBERS.
BEFORE AND AFTER
So what’s a successful marriage? Well, let’s start where you are right now and list what’s great about your relationship: • • • • • •
You have fun. You can talk easily. Sex is great. You never or rarely argue. You easily work through problems. You love spending all of your time together sharing the same interests.
This list is not an exaggeration. These words actually come out of the mouths of many men. And sometimes these men have not been married very long. That’s why it’s critical to pay attention now, and to do what’s necessary to be prepared to have a successful, fulfilling, loving, and vibrant marriage. THE WORK
Are you ready to hear what you’ll need to do to have that successful relationship you want? I ask because it takes work. Sit in a circle with a group of men, which I do several times a week, and you will hear just how challenging it is for them to be in their relationships. You’ll hear about their frustration, anxiety, fear, doubt, and arguments over money, kids, sex, career, his time, her demands, and much more. So let’s get out of this problem and focus on the solution.
IT’S AN INSIDE JOB.
Most of the conflict you’ll experience in your relationship will reflect your personal unresolved issues. That means the sadness, resentment, and anger you’re still carrying from your childhood. You can try to push it down, deny it, or distract yourself with all sorts of activities, substances, and other addictions. But it ain’t goin’ away! Do you find yourself avoiding conflict and being a pleaser because it feels easier that way? Is she going along with you because it’s easier for her when you tend to act like a bully, because you’re so smart and have all the answers? It’s worth every penny to get the support from a counselor/coach/therapist who will help you recognize how your behavior today is connected to your past, and what to do to make positive changes so you can be the best man, father, and husband possible. HAVE THOSE DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS.
OK, that’s a good start. Now let me share a comparable list from a man who’s been married for a while: • I can’t remember the last time I had real fun. • She doesn’t listen. • Sex is infrequent and routine, or almost non-existent. • We argue all the time. • Everything’s a problem with her. • I have no guy friends and I’m bored, numb, or lazy.
Here are a few suggestions:

Talking now may be rather easy for the two of you. But are you having the tough talks? For instance, have you shared all of your sexual fantasies? Or are you holding back because you know she wouldn’t approve? Trust me, these desires will not go away. And if you don’t find a way to work them out with her, you will either act them out with another woman or women, build resentment that’ll poison your relationship, or sexually turn off, which will kill your relationship. It happens all the time. LET MEN SUPPORT YOU.
Spending less time with your buddies? Don’t have close male friends? Getting nervous about being a dad because you didn’t have a great example? Feel uncomfortable around men because you’ve tended to hang around women all your life? These are all excellent reasons to develop trusting relationships with men. To be the best man you can be, I firmly believe you need to be in the company of other men. These guys will hold you accountable, tell you the truth about what it’s like being with you when you’re selfish, angry or defensive, and they’ll share their wisdom with you about sex and romance, fathering, and growing older with the woman you love. Marriage can be a wonderful experience. But it takes work. The good news is what awaits you when you’re willing to do that work. You’ll have a woman who feels safe, secure, cherished, and adored. And when you have that, you’ll be able to build upon what is already a glorious relationship.

CRAIG FOSTER IS PRESIDENT OF ADVOCATES FOR MALIBU PUBLIC SCHOOLS (AMPS), WHICH HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO LEAD THE CREATION OF AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT IN MALIBU. MALIBU CHRONICLE HAS ASKED CRAIG TO UPDATE OUR READERS: CRAIG FOSTER
President of AMPS
Thus, our call to action: We ask every resident of Malibu to consider what roles – yes, make that plural! – he or she can play in the creation of an independent Malibu Unified School District. MC: What can people do to help? CF: ADVOCATE. We need many people speaking up for this cause – educated, informed voices talking to friends, neighbors, colleagues and even strangers about why local control is important and how it will benefit both communities. Familiarize yourself with the issue and facts. The AMPS website (www.ampsmalibu.org) is a good place to start. You can access the WestEd feasibility study from that portal. If you have questions or suggestions, call an AMPS Board member. Attend meetings and participate. Bring a friend.
INTERVIEW WITH CRAIG FOSTER, PRESIDENT OF AMPS
MC: Why create a Malibu Unified School District separate from Santa Monica? CF: Under the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD), Malibu has a little voice, and the board and district administration are often at odds with Malibu parents and residents on vital issues. If our schools are to reflect the values and vision of our community, the citizens of Malibu must work together to establish local governance through the creation of an independent Malibu School District. MC: What is AMPS’ role in this process? CF: AMPS is leading this initiative, hiring SMMUSD-approved consultants to complete a feasibility study to determine if our proposed action complies with state education criteria. Our plan not only complies, it offers significant benefits to both Santa Monica and Malibu.

54 MC APRIL.MAY 2014
We are now at a critical point in our independence campaign. The next phase will be even more active and will demand a much larger cohort of involved and passionate participants.
VOLUNTEER. AMPS is already developing a number of activities that will require a group effort to mount. Your time and energy can make a big difference in our campaign. JOIN. Make it official – join AMPS and be a part of the team. The modest membership fee helps support this important campaign. GIVE. Membership fees cover only a small part of the expenses of this endeavor. We will need to tap deeper resources to succeed. Phase 1 was funded largely by major gifts from AMPS Board members. We will need additional people who care deeply about Malibu schools to make sizable financial commitments to reach our final goal. MC: Final thoughts? CF: An independent Malibu School District will enable us to transform our schools in important ways that will benefit not only our children, but the entire Malibu community. We invite you to be part of it and act today! For more information or questions please visit our website: www.ampsmalibu.org, or email us at amps@ampsmalibu.org. FRENCH MACARONS Spring is here! Do you know what that means? It’s time to dye and decorate eggs! But wouldn’t it be fun to be able to try something a little different this year? Something a little more light and delicious like say, a French Macaron? Cathy Rogers has done it again with her simple yet elegant macarons that are to die for. They are so easy to bake and take only about 40 minutes tops. By adding some pastel food coloring into the batter, how perfect would they be to add to your Easter basket this year? I know I’ll be using this recipe and making it a new family tradition.
SESAME SEED LACE CONES WITH BBQ SHORT RIB AND GUACAMOLE

Tapas! Tapas! And more tapas! Little bites and appetizers are the easiest way to mix together different cuisines and have them compliment one another perfectly. Take these Sesame cones stuffed with BBQ Short Rib and topped with an ice cream scoop of guacamole, sound mouth-watering don’t they? With the mixture of a little bit of Asian cuisine together with a little bit of Western BBQ, this little bite is one that you can never get enough of. Sweet and salty is a combination that I know I could never turn down and with this little appetizer being so fun and so cute to make, everyone can join in and add anything they want to make it their own. (These are also amazing with spicy tuna and topped with fish eggs to keep it with the Japanese flair). These are a must add to your recipe repertoire because they are simple and they are sure to impress, every single time.
