That is quite a compliment for our magazine. We are grateful for all the love and light that we were able to share with our readers, friends and family. We appreciate the exciting times as our magazine is getting better, and our Malibu Chronicle family is getting bigger. I am delighted to introduce two new members in this issue. Please welcome Susan (Sue) Hardie as our new editor. I met Sue at the Malibu Playhouse as a fellow actor. Our mutual respect grew into a friendship and we realized that we had a lot in common. Sue had started her editing career with her high school newspaper. Since then she did a lot of amazing things before coming back, full circle, to being a magazine editor with Malibu Chronicle. Susan is a registered nurse and has taught nursing. She has a PhD in Education and Child Development. She was a Professor at UCLA and Pepperdine University. Before joining Malibu Chronicle Susan served as the Director at Stuart House, UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica. She also continues to be a fine actress. Please also welcome Kimber Sax to our Sales Executives team. Kimber comes to us with considerable experience in online and print magazine sales, advertisement, co-op advertising, and a rich background that includes brand development. As always, I invite you to send your ideas for interesting and intelligent topics you’d like for us to debate and discuss in future issues. I love learning, through your wonderful emails, that you are noticing & enjoying the improvements we continue to make. I invite you to send me a note at veera@malibuchronicle.com with any suggestions, comments, or just to say hello. I look forward to hearing from you.

“THE THERAPY HORSES HAVE A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN HOSPITAL CARE. ONE LITTLE GIRL WHO HAD A HEART TRANSPLANT AND LEUKEMIA SAID MAGIC MADE HER FACE HURT FROM SMILING SO MUCH.

GENTLE CAROUSEL MINIATUR When a real horse walks into the hospital room of a sick child it is always a magical experience. Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses, an award winning 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, works with over 35,000 adults and children each year inside hospitals, hospice programs, law enforcement community outreach programs, Ronald McDonald Houses and with families who have experienced traumatic events.

B

ased in California and Florida, the teams of little therapy horses travel across the country. From helping the children and first responders of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, to child trafficking victims in Washington D.C., and tornado survivors in Moore, OK, they bring their special love where it is needed most. The horses also work inside schools, libraries, at risk youth programs and family homeless shelters. Gentle Carousel Greece in Athens helps children living inside orphanages and institutions. These highly trained miniature horses make challenging situations look easy. They walk up and down steps, ride in elevators, walk on unusual floor surfaces, carefully move around hospital equipment, work in small patient rooms and handle unexpected sounds like ambulances, alarms and hospital helicopters... and yes, they are potty trained. The horses work with medical professionals

in oncology units, the ICU, with veterans in inpatient psychiatric wards and with occupational, speech and physical therapists as part of treatment teams with patients who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and burns. Therapy horse, Pearl, of Gentle Carousel West has been working at the Los Angeles Veterans Hospital for six years and is loved by the patients and the medical staff. In 2013, Pearl and her trainer, Victoria, were honored as Volunteers of the Year for the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. One veteran who loved Pearl's visits when he was a patient requested a final visit from the little therapy horse when he entered hospice care. And so, at the end of this soldier's life, Pearl was there at his bedside to comfort a man who had bravely served his country. Therapy horse, Magic, was selected by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and

by UK’s The Daily Mirror and the 2014 winner of the prestigious E.T. York Distinguished Service Award. Magic and her therapy horse buddy, Hamlet, were honored in 2014 as Breyer portrait model horses, or in the words of one young hospital patient, "Magic has her own action figure!" Magic's sister, American Valor, was named in honor of a fallen officer and wears his badge when visiting children. Valor and her equine team-

mates of Gentle Carousel West will be first responders for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department: Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. They will be on call to help grieving families and children who have experienced trauma. (See sidebar.) Valor will be joining Magic and fellow first responders in Washington D.C. for the National Peace Officer's Memorial Service in May. They will work with the children of fallen officers and with family and co-worker survivors. The therapy horses have a special relationship with children and adults in hospital care. One little girl who had a heart transplant and leukemia said Magic made her face hurt from smiling so much. A boy losing his sight because of a brain tumor held Magic close to his face so he could always remember what she looked like. "It is like she can see inside my soul," he told his mother. Magic was with a patient who woke from a coma, with a woman who spoke for the first time in years, and in the bedroom of a man who passed away with his hand resting on her head. He'd told his family earlier that day how much he missed his childhood pony. A little boy with a life ending illness who had been in the hospital most of his life requested a visit from Magic. He laughed and hugged her and was so excited. After the visit his mother said, "We have never had a happy day, and now our family will always have a happy day." Help Pearl, Magic, Valor and their 24 teammates at Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses bring many more happy days to children in need. Call Gentle Carousel at (352) 226-9009 or visit: www.Horse-Therapy.org www.facebook.com/TherapyHorses

The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station has announced that therapy horse volunteer Deputy Valor will serve as a ‘face’ of law enforcement with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. The Department stated, "Valor will reach many children at a young age and help heal hearts and bring smiles to hurting people. As part of her duties she will comfort those in need during traumatic events and be an integral part of reading programs and community outreach events." Valor was named in honor of fallen Police Officer Kenneth Tietjen, who died during the September 11th terrorist attacks. Valor and her trainer and handler, Victoria Nodiff-Netanel, are assigned to the Malibu/Lost Hills station and the cost of their work is supported completely by Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses.

Q:

A:

IS THERE ANY REALLY EFFECTIVE WAY TO TIGHTEN MY SKIN WITH! OUT PLASTIC SURGERY?

I’M ASKED THIS QUESTION ON A DAILY BASIS. Several years ago, my answer usually involved shaking my head. But due to recent major advancements in non-invasive aesthetics, my patients now have the opportunity to tighten skin on their face and body without surgery. When it comes to firming tissue on the face and neck, Ultherapy is the go-to procedure. Ultherapy is the first and only non-invasive treatment that’s FDA cleared to lift the eyebrow, neck, and under-chin area, and it just recently gained specific clearance to improve lines and wrinkles of the chest. Ultherapy utilizes ultrasound waves to deliver focused energy to the same foundational layer typically pulled by surgeons during cosmetic surgery, but it does so without cutting or disrupting the skin’s surface. Ultrasound has a 50-year history of proven safety, and with Ultherapy there is no down time, so patients can resume normal activities immediately. Most patients need only one treatment, and results can last years. If it’s loose skin on the body that you’re looking to tighten, procedures utilizing radio frequency, such as JuVaShape, can offer significant results without surgery. Radio frequency is used to safely deliver concentrated thermal energy to the deep layers of tissue. This results in collagen stimulation and selective breakdown of fibrous strands to allow for a smoothing, sculpting effect. In our office we use JuVaShape technology to tighten skin of the abdomen, arms, thighs, and knees. Because it combines four proven technologies in one system, we can achieve impressive results with little to no downtime. The sensation is usually described as similar to that of a hot stone massage. Treatments generally take 15 to 30 minutes and results last six months to a year. Ultherapy and JuVaShape are receiving stellar reviews nationwide from both patients and providers looking for noticeable skin-firming results without surgery.

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

I

F YOU SHARE A LOVE FOR exclusive auto-

mobiles and breath-taking views, I would certainly recommend putting this on your to-do list this year. In 2015, Waldorf Astoria Hotel and Resorts will be extending its Waldorf Astoria Driving Experiences. Launched last fall, the drive gives guests the chance to experience some of the most prized supercars on some of the most scenic roads in the world. I had a chance to participate in the drive last year in Park City, Utah, with the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider, Porsche 911 Turbo and McLaren MP4-12C, and it cer-

tainly tops the list for one of my most memorable events in 2014 as an automotive journalist. More than just the cars, which are quite noteworthy themselves, it was really the combination of both the automobiles and breathtaking views of Utah that made the drive unforgettable. Led by a world-class professional race car driver, about the only thing not to like about the experience is that immediately after the three hours on the road you quickly find yourself wishing you had more time. In addition to the drive, adding to the getaway were all the other luxury amenities that come with being a guest at the Waldorf Astoria Park City resort, which is quite an experience in itself whether dining at the hotel’s restaurant, Powder, or relaxing by the property’s festive outdoor fireplace. Still, it was being behind the wheel that I reveled in most, given the thrill that comes with high-performance cars on the open road.

In addition to Utah, the drives in 2014 took in the beauty of California, winding through the desert and Alpine forests around Palm Springs; driving along the Atlantic coastline from Boca Raton to West Palm Beach in Florida; touring the desert landscape that crosses the Tonto National Forest in Arizona; and beholding the views of Louisiana, driving through the Bayou along the Gulf of Mexico. Waldorf Astoria is still finalizing the details for this year’s Drive Experience which will include key locations in the U.S., as well as in the United Kingdom, Western Europe and the Middle East. However, regardless of the destination, this is one road adventure you should experience for yourself.

Q:

A:

WHEN CAN I RETURN TO SPORTS / FITNESS ROUTINES AFTER SPINE SURGERY?

CONTRARY TO WHAT PATIENTS MAY FEAR, SPINAL SURGERY DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN THE END TO A PATIENT’S ATHLETIC CAREER OR FITNESS ROUTINE. The athlete’s level of competition, overall fitness, the sport they play, as well as the surgery, all impact how soon an athlete can get back in the game. One of the most progressive treatments is known as a Microdiscectomy and has become increasingly popular among athletes. This Minimally Invasive Spine Procedure uses microsurgical tools and access ports to remove the herniated portions of the spinal disc and requires an incision of an inch or less. The removal of the herniated portion of the disc alleviates the pressure on the spinal nerves that may be causing pain in the lower back, hips or legs. This procedure is often performed on an outpatient basis with an expedited recovery plan. In fact, only a Band-Aid is needed to cover the wound after surgery and patients can return to work after only 48 hours. Physical therapy is an important tool in getting an athlete back to playing sports or doing fitness routines at the level they are accustomed to, and that will start just days after surgery. It is no secret that an athlete’s dedication to their post-operative rehab program has a direct correlation to how well they will perform when they return to competition. In other words, work hard to rehab your injury and you can return to your previous level or better. Dr. Anthony Virella is a Board-Certified, Fellowship trained Neurological Spine Surgeon with advanced training in the management of complex spinal disorders. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and is a graduate of the UCLA Neurosurgery Residency Program. Dr. Virella completed his complex spine in-folding resident fellowship at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation with Dr. Edward C. Benzel, M.D. Additional work included a second fellowship in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center. Dr. Virella is a nationally recognized specialist in the field of complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and has offices located in Westlake Village, Simi Valley and Valencia. THE FORGOTTEN

INGREDIENT WRITTEN BY HERMINE HILTON

[ Hermine Hilton, one of America’s most popular speakers, is the author of several books on memory including “The Executive Memory Guide”(Simon&Schuster) and her latest book titled “Fuhhgeddaboutit!”(How To Stop Worrying About Your Memory). You may have heard her on Radio or seen her on Television with David Letterman; Charlie Rose; Matt Lauer; Bryant Gumbel or a host of others. She is the creator of Sonik Memory and the memory motivator for the Fortune Five Hundred companies from Nordstrom to NASA, and is known internationally from the Netherlands to Nigeria, Turkey to Thailand, Italy to Israel, and almost all other points on the planet. (She is also known as ‘The Lady On The Mountain’ to those of you in Malibu who drive Corral Canyon.)]

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

S

TARTING 2015 WITH THIS ISSUE ON Heart, Relationships and

rejuvenating our physical and emotional health, I was thinking how important it was to begin by loving ourselves. And I mean loving ourselves from our brawn to our brain. Now the brawn we can take care of with good eating and exercise. But how can we love our brains when the memory inside doesn't seem to be working as well as we would like. The Babyboomers fear they are on a road to dementia the moment they forget a single name, and students everywhere build up loveless stress over test taking. I keep hearing through the media the sad fact that our U.S. student test scores rank dismally low on the universal totem pole. Now who can love that. And what a shame to hear this as it doesn’t have to be that way. So I'd like to direct the message in this article to all ages out there and tell you there is a very definite reason for the brain lack and , believe it or not, it begins at the very beginning.

The Forgotten Ingredient And the reason is – whether starting 1st grade or going for your Masters, it is rare that any teacher or professor along the way ever teaches us how to work our memories. How ridiculous is this, when from kindergarten on up, (starting with The Pledge Of Allegiance), we’re expected to remember everything and then be tested on it. And although the best computer in the world should be the one attached to our necks, there is no course on how to operate it. No-one teaches us how to hit our mental ‘save key’. Memory is simply not a subject taught in our schools. B.B.C. Radio did an incisive series on memory and brought out this very point, that the function of working memory is crucial to learning and yet is relatively unknown in current pedagogy.

It is the forgotten ingredient.

The Basics As ‘America’s Memory Motivator’, I speak to audiences around the globe. Wherever I speak, whether nationally or internationally, to audiences on college campuses or behind prison walls, I always introduce the basic elements of working your memory, because the mechanics of memory are the same for every one of us: n #1…Collect - Focus consciously on that

which you want to remember…

n #2…Connect - Link the new info you wish

to save to your known info…

‘AMERICA’S MEMORY MOTIVATOR’ / 21

favor of mindless repeating. The consistent and embarrassingly low U.S. test scores are proof that ‘roting is rotten’. If there is no thinking involved, there is no real learning.

Mental Filing It is very important for each of us to learn how to collect information so that we can eventually learn how to set up a mental file. Yes, that’s what I said, a mental file. Did you know that was even possible? That you could collect and file information in your mind for later recall. Well it is. The only difference between the alphabetical file in your file drawer and the memory file you can instill in your mind, is rather than an ABC file, a mental file is set up numerically. For instance: If you were a medical student studying the cranial nerves, (there are 12), you could file them away, and be able to answer, when tested, that ‘glossopharyngeal’ is the 9th one. (or) If you were studying the U.S. Presidents, (44 to date), and put them all in your mind’s file, you could answer, ‘Chester A. Arthur’, if someone asked who was the 21st. (Many books cover the subject including my own.)

What a Difference it Would Make

n #3…Recollect - Review your mental connection

and you’ll be able to get the info off the tip of your tongue, and spit it out.

The memory, after all, is a connecting machine in which one thing triggers off another… ‘and that reminds me’.

Imagine how handy it would be if you could just go to your mental file to retrieve the answers to the questions on a test. Well, you can. (And it’s a whole lot safer than writing them on your hand… sorry, just messin’ with ya). But someone has to teach you how to put the info in and how to get it out. And it’s a shame mental filing isn’t taught in our schools. Don’t blame your teachers though. They can’t teach you something they never learned themselves, and probably didn’t even know existed. Even in my Psyc. Class in college, memory training wasn’t a priority. I guess that’s the reason all I remember from that class is that the professor was a sloppy dresser and Pavlov had a dog. I learned about mental filing from an Austrian professor my mother read an article about, in a California newspaper, and encouraged me to contact. My introduction to the theory left me speechless. Besides the fact it knocked my socks off, it enabled me, thereafter, to ace every test I took and thereby kill the curve in every class I enrolled in. And you can learn too, to work that computer attached to your neck. Start now so you can feel healthy and happy all over and love yourself from brawn to brain. So much is written about the mystery of memory. Memory shouldn’t be a mystery. It should be as natural as breathing. It should be the very first step in learning how to learn. And it should definitely be taught in our schools.

Rote is Rot But, instead of training our memories to make connections, right from the kickoff we are invited to try to learn by ROTE, which is merely mechanical repetition with no thinking (intelligence) involved. DR. MARC KERNER

WHAT IS PLATELET RICH PLASMA THERAPY- ALSO KNOWN AS PRP?

Q:

A:

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE WITH PLATELET RICH PLASMA THERAPY

PRP is a concentration of a patient’s own platelets which are components of blood that contain healing factors and bio-active proteins. These cells are vital for tissue regeneration and repair. Platelets are not only responsible for clotting but are a reservoir of these vital healing components. The platelets contain a number of growth factors that stimulate wound healing, and signal other healing cells to come to the location where the growth factors are released.

OBTAINING PRP? A small amount of peripheral blood is taken from a patient and placed into an FDA medically approved container which is placed in a specialized centrifuge that separates the blood samples into layers of platelet rich plasma and red blood cells. The red cells are discarded, and a pure concentrated amount of platelets are then prepared for reinjection.

HOW IS IT USED? PRP is used for cosmetic purposes to enhance fat grafting take and survival, and for treating musculoskeletal inflammation such as tendinitis, severe muscle pulls, arthritis, and other joint diseases. It is injected directly into these areas using either ultrasound or fluoroscopy guidance. Once the PRP is introduced into the desired area, the platelets release a very high concentration of growth factors that bring other healing cells into the area. There is also a strong anti-inflammatory effect from PRP so there is minimal bruising or swelling in the region where it is injected. The healing process starts immediately and continues to take place over a 4-6 week period. Repeated injections are sometimes needed to continue stimulating the healing process, especially for arthritis. Regenerative medicine is an exciting new area of medicine that is leading to significant improvement in patient care. For more information on Dr. Kerner and PRP, please visit www.calwestent.com or call 818-349-0600. Dr. Kerner has offices in both Northridge and Westlake Village.

IVE YEARS AGO, WHEN I WAS IN THE MID! DLE OF TREAT!

MENT FOR BREAST CANCER, I realized

I had given my two young daughters a horrible legacy: a first degree relative with breast cancer. At 3 in the morning I looked for a way to protect them by teaching them how to do a proper Breast Self Exam. That simple internet search is how I found The Get In Touch Foundation.

(L-R): Mary nilan, Jennifer Nicholson Salke, Mary Ann Wasil (founder), Rob Lowe, Angelique L'Amour Pitney, Dr. Nalini Chilkov, Dr. Kristi Funk

“BREAST CANCER, WHEN FOUND IN EARLY STAGES, IS 99% CURABLE.”

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

It is so simple – armed with information from Get In Touch I could teach the girls and their friends and encourage the schools they were at to implement the program. The Get In Touch Foundation and Daisy Wheel Girl’s program teaches girls grades 5-12 the importance of, and how to do breast self exam-for life. Since launching in fall 2009 the free-toschools program has been implemented in all 50 states and 28 countries. There is a free ITunes app that has been downloaded in 83 countries. A grass roots non-

profit begun in a small town in Connecticut by breast cancer survivor and mother of three, Mary Ann Wasil, has become a global breast health initiative teaching girls this life saving technique. Unfortunately for my generation Breast Cancer has become more and more prevalent. When I was diagnosed, the girls were at Our Lady Of Malibu. In my older daughter’s 6th grade class, 5 out of the 15 mothers either had been diagnosed or would be diagnosed within 3 years. That was only the 6th grade—there were other cases in other grades. Breast cancer, when found in early stages, is 99% curable. Learning how to do a proper breast self exam can save a life. It is that simple. The Get In Touch program shows us how. When people ask me why I do what I do I ask them, “Who taught you how to do a breast self exam? Did you have to ask?” I want to teach our daughters, yours and mine. If girls can learn this simple technique while they are young they will recognize a change if it occurs. The men who ask me about this program are astounded that it is not a matter of course that all women are taught this technique. This year over 200,000 women and over 2400 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. I started as a survivor, became a supporter, and then became a teacher of the program at my alma mater, Marymount High School and also at La Reina. I am now on the board of The Get In Touch Foundation. On March 12, 2015 I will Co-chair “The Get In Touch Foundation’s Pretty in Pink Luncheon and Women of Strength Awards Los Angeles 2015” with Jennifer Nicholson Salke and Tema Schrage. Last year’s event was highly successful and we honored the amazing and brilliant, Dr. Kristi Funk who put it so perfectly when she said, “There is no prevention there is only early detection.”

Please join us at our luncheon on March 12, 2015. For further information: Getintouchfoundation.org.

YES! A REVOLUTIONARY PROCEDURE WHICH ALLOWS PATIENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR SMILE IN A DAY IS PROVIDED AT ANACAPA DENTAL ART INSTITUTE. THIS PROCEDURE REQUIRES SPECIALIST CARE, ATTENTION TO DETAIL, AND A TEAM APPROACH.

Q:

A:

CAN I REALLY GET A NEW SMILE IN A DAY?

Many prospective patients have a number of questions related to this procedure, most of them center around the cost of the procedure and how long it takes. 1. Why Anacapa Dental Art Institute? Our team of specialists work together to deliver excellent treatment to our patients. We believe in the true power of collaboration. When the Prosthodontist speaks directly with the surgeon and the lab technician, face-to-face, our team is able to deliver a better patient experience. Our facility has internationally recognized clinicians that teach other dentists around the world and have written the books on Implant Dentistry. Our specialists have completed procedures on thousands of patients so you can be rest assured that we have what it takes to deliver the smile of your dreams. We believe in our dedicated team of professionals, with a specific focus on just dental implants. Anacapa Dental Art Institute was founded on the principle that there had to be a better way to perform dental implant procedures. We perform more dental implant procedures every year than any other facility or network because of our innovative approach to treating patients. That level of experience has given thousands of patients the confidence to take that first step towards a better smile. 2. Is the procedure of Smile in a day costly? With multiple centers it was difficult to know the full price of dental implant procedures. Different specialists had different fees that would add up at each stage in the process. Since our doctors, technicians, and labs, are all on site, we are able to give a single price for the entire pro-

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

cedure from start to finish. There are no surprise fees and no hidden costs. After your consultation, you will know exactly what it will cost to complete your dental implant treatment. There are many financial options that can make this procedure affordable. 3. How can this procedure be done in a day? Traditionally, dental implants require several visits to specialists in several locations, and the teeth are created at an off-site lab and shipped to the office. If any adjustments needed to be made, the teeth would need to be shipped back to the lab. At Anacapa Dental Art Institute we have combined all of the necessary elements for successful dental implant treatment in a single location. Your consultation, lab work, creation of your teeth, the procedure and recovery, are all housed in a single center. The teeth are fabricated ahead of time and on the day of surgery they are connected to the implants. This is done without any extensive bone grafting procedures, no lengthy absences from work, and no wearing dentures. 4. What is the one unique factor which sets Anacapa Dental Art institute apart from every other center? We provide a minimum ten year warranty on every implant procedure we do to ensure that our patients have peace of mind. We can do this because we have been performing these procedures for a long time and with great success. Please go to: www.dentalimplantsventura.com/pat ient-media-center/patient-testimonials/ to see the number of patients that have been satisfied at Anacapa Dental Art Institute. It also requires a full-time, dedicated effort from every one of the company's employees, extensive attention to even the smallest detail, and the creation of a safety culture where every employee, in any capacity, has the power to ensure that safety is the watchword in every aspect of operations, training, and maintenance. They have entered the exclusive world of private aviation. The company has invested almost $30 million in its 11 acre complex, all devoted to its customers and clients. Sun Air’s main terminal has been selected as “One of the Best FBOs in North America” by Aviation International News. Dining on custom-prepared, individualized meals at 40,000 feet in the luxury of a private jet is truly an experience that makes the trip delightful. As passengers like to say, the convenience and privacy of private aviation is something that has to be experienced to be appreciated. Once you have experienced it, nothing else compares, and once you have flown with Sun Air, you'll never fly with anyone else again! Sun Air is a member of the Signature Select® brand, a subsidiary of the Signature Flight Support network. This network consists of over 120 domestic and international locations that are selected based on the highest standards of service, support, and customer satisfaction. Signature Select® allows Sun Air to provide consistent service to aircraft owners and charter passengers as they travel around the world and stop at other network locations. Its proprietary SigNet® database stores information about every customer in the network, allowing Sun Air to anticipate any request or customized service on a flight, from a particular vintage of champagne to the dog's favorite treats! This consistency and concierge service throughout the Signature network provides the critical "away from home base" service level that is hard for other operators to duplicate. In addition to their aircraft management, charter, and aircraft fueling businesses, Sun Air has grown its maintenance department into an organization that keeps its growing fleet flying 365 days per year, efficiently and at the highest standards of safety. "Our maintenance department is designed to handle any maintenance that is required," stated Greg Paxson, Sun Air's Director of Maintenance. "We keep our fleet flying 365 days a year all around the world through rigorous and anticipatory maintenance procedures to ensure the highest possible level of reliability and safety." The creation up out of the dirt of over 120,000 square feet of hangars and 22,000 square feet of terminal and offices has transformed the Camarillo Airport from a sleepy, under-utilized former military airfield into a dynamic engine of growth in Ventura County. With over 60 jobs and a payroll of

over $5 million, Sun Air generates a significant amount of direct and indirect investment in the county. Looking at the business from 40,000 feet, the one thing that Sun Air's employees all agree on is that in aviation, the only constant is change. From the depths of the great recession in 2008-2011 to today, the business is different in many ways. Mostly it has to do with expectations: the irrational exuberance surrounding everything in aviation leading up to 2008 has been eliminated. What has replaced it is both good and bad: good, in that more rigorous, consistent business practices have been implemented in much of the industry; bad, in that many long-time, "mom and pop" aviation businesses are being squeezed out of the market by consolidation, huge capital investments by hedge funds, roll-ups, and the like. Sun Air has flourished as an independent company by becoming a leader in safety and making investments in its facilities and employee talent. Looking to the future for Sun Air, it is bright indeed. The company continues to grow intelligently, appropriately, and most of all, profitably as it continues its quest to be the best charter management company and aircraft operator in the world.

DON'T FORGET YOUR SPF THIS WINTER!

IF YOU ARE STAYING HOME THIS WINTER, REMEMBER TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS. The sun during the winter months in Southern California is still very strong. Make sure you are reapplying your sun block every 80 minutes; applying once in the morning is just not enough. This will help maintain a constant barrier from the UV rays. Just as important, you should be wearing a wide brim hat to protect not only your face but your ears as well. Try to avoid being outside for extended periods of time from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The late morning and early afternoon is when the sun is at its strongest. In Southern California your skin gets dry, especially in the winter, so remember to stay hydrated and moisturize regularly to keep your skin in its best condition. Even though you might be going on winter vacation, it doesn't mean the sun is too. Actually, if you are going to the mountains for a snow retreat, the UV radiation increases 4-5 percent every thousand feet above sea level. To put that into perspective, 9,000 feet above sea level UV radiation may be 35 to 45 percent more intense than at sea level. When you are playing in the snow or hitting the slopes, the snow reflects 80% of the UV rays coming directly from the sun onto your skin. In other words, you are being hit with UV rays 2 times more than you usually would. So keep that sun block in your pocket and reapply as much as possible. So whatever you have planned for this winter season, take these tips and enjoy. We offer various brands of sunscreen at The Center for Dermatology Care. The core principles of Primal Blueprint Fitness are surprisingly practical, easy-to-use and fun for anyone who wants to reach optimal wellness. Before we talk exercise, Mark Sisson, Founder of Malibu-based Primal Blueprint, points out a key fact about achieving optimal fitness: "80% of body composition comes from how you manipulate hormones and gene expression. You cannot exercise away a bad diet." Catch up on Primal Nutrition by reading the article "Eating Primally" in the December/January 2015 issue of Malibu Chronicle (www.malibuchronicle.com). I had a rare opportunity to sit down with Mark Sisson to learn everything "Primal." The 1.5 hour interview probably stretched the limits of his rule about avoiding long sedentary activity! Primal Fitness is about movement. Frequent, daily, low intensity movements with brief intense workouts to build strength, speed and power. Is Mark saying to cut back on long, high intensity daily workouts? Basically, yes! Running a 10K or biking 60 miles occasionally is outstanding, but Mark warns of a serious problem he calls "Chronic Cardio." Mark Sisson explains, "Unfortunately, many devoted fitness enthusiasts engage

This approach – what I refer to as Chronic Cardio – leads to fatigue, suppressed immune function, injury, failed weight loss efforts and burnout among what should be considered the healthiest and fittest modern humans." PRIMAL BLUEPRINT FITNESS: 3 KEY ACTIONS " MOVE, LIFT AND SPRINT! n Daily and Frequent Low Intensity Movement

Primal living helps us step out of the sedentary lifestyle of today's modern world – sitting behind computers and tablets, business trips, long commutes, etc. On a daily basis enjoy a brief morning walk or hike, take frequent office breaks for a stroll in the sunshine and (if you own a dog) take your dog on a short walk before you head into the house for dinner and rest. Once every 7-10 days engage in the ultimate Primal workout – sprints. Sprints can be running, cardio, machines, uphill sprints, swimming...or choose your favorite exercise. Do a sprint workout once every 7-10 days lasting ten minutes total (6 sprints at 10-30 seconds each with a minute or two rest in between) and always include warm up and cool down. Mark's best advice for making your workout achieve results is always have a goal when you exercise. "Don't just exercise because you think you should. DR. HILDA MALDONADO

Q:

A:

I WAS TOLD MY THYROID TESTS ARE NORMAL, BUT I STILL FEEL AS IF I HAVE LOW THY! ROID SYMPTOMS. COULD IT STILL BE MY THYROID?

A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE SYMPTOMS OF LOW thyroid such as cold hands, cold feet, fatigue, hair loss, constipation, elevated cholesterol, difficulty losing weight and difficulty sleeping, are told that their thyroid is normal in spite of their symptoms. This includes people who are currently taking thyroid replacement. Being in these circumstances becomes a source of frustration for the patient and often leads to resorting to unnecessary use of other prescription medications. When being tested for thyroid, it is important to look beyond a simple TSH. I prefer a thorough blood panel which includes TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3 and TPO. This is especially important for those who have been prescribed thyroid replacement in the form of T4 alone. Whether replaced or not, the body has to convert the T4 to the active form of thyroid, which is T3. There are many factors that interfere with this conversion, such as, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, liver detoxification impairment, adrenal imbalances and stress. When the TPO test is positive, this means that the body is starting to form antibodies against the thyroid; this is known as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. This is autoimmune in its origin. Your body tries to destroy its own thyroid. This scenario requires specific lifestyle changes including, but not limited to, ruling out toxic exposures and thyroid replacement itself. Be aware that the current normal ranges for TSH are too wide in range. This results in people being told they have a normal TSH test when in fact they are hypothyroid. Since "normal" tests are determined by the "norm" in a population, over time more people will be told that they have a normal thyroid when in fact they are hypothyroid. Being overweight, sick, tired and sluggish is progressively becoming the "norm" in North America. If you have been told that your thyroid tests are normal but you are still experiencing low thyroid symptoms, please listen to your body and request thorough testing. Become educated and empowered, find a practitioner that will listen and who will help you get to the root of your symptoms in order to restore your energy and overall sense of well-being. Beauty Tips -

Fine Wrinkles WRITTEN BY JC CADENA

EVER SINCE I CAN remember I was

always aware of growing older. And now that I am older I am more conscious of wrinkles. These tips I’m sharing are tips to help with fine wrinkles in the non-surgical way.

SLEEP

RETIN A

Growing older minimizes the elasticity of the skin. Be careful how you sleep. If you sleep 8 hours on one side of your face, you’ve just spent 8 hours creating those wrinkles around the eyes and the frown lines. Multiply those 8 hours by 7 days a week and now wrinkles are getting deeper and more visible. I recommend sleeping with your face up to avoid this wrinkle routine. It is a little hard to get used to at first, but you’ll manage. Before going to sleep think happy thoughts, relax your face and try to maintain stillness. I promise it gets easier with practice.

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

About this “beauty tip” you must ask your doctor or dermatologist for advice and prescription. They are the only ones that can prescribe the cream and determine if it’s right for you. I use Retin A to help with: skin aging, spots, fine wrinkles, discoloration of skin, and exfoliation. According to the Mayo Clinic, “It works by lightening the skin, replacing older skin with newer skin, and by slowing down the way the body removes skin cells that may have been harmed by the sun.” www.mayoclinic.org

“Ask The Expert”

TRACY MANDRYK, NP

Q:

A:

IS THERE A “BEAUTY SECRET” TO KEEP MY LEGS LOOKING AND FEELING GREAT?

EVERYBODY WANTS TO HAVE A PAIR OF NICE LOOKING LEGS. We don’t want to feel like we have to hide our legs under long pants, right? Unfortunately, relatively few of us are blessed by nature (or should we say genealogy) with naturally good-looking legs. The truth is, for most of us it takes some work to give our legs that “toned” look. The good news is that there are numerous ways to help our legs stay healthy, shapely, and pleasing to the eye. Don’t worry, this is not going to be a trip down vanity lane. The bottom line is that our legs are very important and should not be neglected. They have to carry and support us every day for our entire life. So naturally, they deserve some of our attention and we should care about their well-being. You guessed right, wear compression stockings or support hose whenever you can (except when you are sleeping or laying down) to boost circulation in your legs and specifically, to help your veins not have to work so hard transporting the blood back to your heart. In addition, wearing support hosiery with graduated compression can help prevent or reduce any swelling, spider veins, or varicose veins in your legs. Today’s fashionable compression and support hose are nearly indistinguishable from traditional fashion hosiery and can be worn for all occasions from a professional work place to a night on the town. Compression stockings and socks available today are very comfortable. After you begin wearing them, you’ll discover how much more energized and pain free your legs are. With the side benefit of keeping your legs beautiful, how can you say no to compression stockings! If your legs do not look and / or feel as good as possible or you are not sure of what type of compression stocking is best for you, please call Coastal Vascular Center at 805484-6900 or email concierge@coastalvascularnter.com and schedule your complimentary consultation. The Three Bodies/Mix It Up

A

S A PERSONAL TRAINER AND HEALTH CLUB OWNER, I am fre-

quently asked what is the best single exercise. My response is that there is no, one, perfect exercise. The reason being is because each of us is equipped with three distinct body systems, each of which require different types of training. What these are and how to properly stimulate them are as follows:

n Power Body - This body system is trained by doing resistance training exercise, i.e. weight training. I am often told by new clients that, “I don’t need to weight train with my legs because I run.” Little do they know that it is precisely because they run that they need to train their legs. You see, cardiovascular exercise is great for the heart and lungs but actually reduces the amount of muscle mass, even in the muscles being worked. This is because we have two types of muscle fibers: one that operates without oxygen and works fast, and these muscle cells lay dormant when we do endurance exercise. The other muscle fibers are slow twitch and are called upon during endurance exercise, but these type of muscle fibers do not tighten and tone as the fast twitch do. Also yoga really doesn’t get all your fast twitch muscle fibers. I remember taking one of my clients (who is an advanced yogi) through a weight training session and the next day she came in saying how she has never been as sore in her whole life. She still lifts weights today. By weight training and working our power body, we recruit our fast twitch muscle fibers that tighten and tone us. Another added benefit is by increasing our lean body mass, we will increase our metabolism thus burning more calories throughout the day even when we are not exercising! The benefits

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

of resistance exercises are even more pronounced as we age, so you are never too old to start. n The Endurance Body - This is also known as the cardio pulmonary body. Training this body system is good for your heart and lungs and overall weight control. Any form of cardiovascular activity works this body system. If you are only training your strength body or doing yoga then you are not calling upon your cardiovascular system enough. Circuit training and a flow type of yoga helps but it does not compensate completely. To achieve this is not daunting. Just simply getting out and doing anything that gets your heart rate up for at least twenty minutes three times a week is all you need. n The Flexibility/Spine Body - This body is best trained during yoga classes. I love the saying, “You are young as your spine is flexible.” I am a relative newcomer to yoga but I swear by it. I had a chronically bad back that I couldn’t sleep through the night with, and within a year of carefully employing a yoga practice my back is rarely an issue. If you can take 2 or 3 yoga classes a week great, but just doing one is very beneficial.

So try and stimulate all 3 bodies and you will be amazed how your body will respond.

Setting Relationships Right

I

N LIFE, BE IT BUSINESS OR FAMILY, you need to

relate properly to whomever and whatever you contact. A lack of proper relationship would lead you to frustration and build up your stress. Ironically, people take utmost care to choose the ‘right partner’, official or domestic, but quite ignore the importance of the ‘right relation’ with that person. It is not whom or what you meet in life that matters but how you meet it. The great Greek philosopher, Socrates, drives home this point brilliantly. A young man sought the master’s opinion about his decision to get married. The master shot out his advice, “By all means get married, if you do get a good wife you will be happy, if you get a bad one you will become a philosopher!” So all through life your accent is on finding the right partner or environment

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

A. Parthasarathy (2014-02-03). Governing Business and Relationships

instead of learning the art of relating to it. A knife is indispensable in a home. The family uses it everyday in the kitchen. But the same knife has been put to a horrifying use of stabbing a member of the family. A knife per se cannot be labelled as beneficial or detrimental to the user. It would depend upon how one relates to it. So is it with any partnership. If you relate to the person wisely you create a heaven out of the relationship. If not, your unintelligent relationship turns hellish. Heaven and hell are therefore not geographical places. They are mere states of your mind. You make yourself. You mar yourself. You are the architect of your fortune. You are the architect of your misfortune. All you need to do is set a right, healthy relationship with the world you contact.

Streamline Your Relation

In the course of life you meet different types of people, situations and environments. When your intellect is weak your mind is affected by external fluctuations. You become upset. But with a strong intellect you could deal with them objectively. Understand their inherent nature and relate to them appropriately. Whenever you cannot change the flow,

get into the flow and make the best out of it. A bad workman complains of his tools. Be a perfect craftsman, get on to your job with the tools you have. Be a master, not a slave to external challenges. You then maintain your objectivity in life. As you lose objectivity, the intellect’s control over the mind, you become impulsive. And with further loss of control of the mind you could turn eccentric, even hysterical. End up in a pathetic equation with the world. As the intellect loses its strength the mind takes over your personality. Your mind becomes emotionally involved, obsessed with the business at work and attached, infatuated with the family at home. This sickening state of mind is the killer of all relationships. It ruins your success and progress at work, your peace and happiness at home. When the mind is overwhelmed with impulses and emotions the intellect becomes ineffectual. As a result business is impaired. At home, spouses become infatuated with one another and suffer from severe attachment and possessiveness. They get suffocatingly close and their relationship ends up in separation. Kahlil Gibran, the Lebanese American philosopher puts this idea across beautifully: Marriage is like a temple resting on two pillars. If they come too close to each other the temple will collapse. Your affection therefore should not be restricted to the members of your family alone. Your home should be the centre and not the boundary of your affection. To set your relationships right with the world at large you need to observe certain disciplines. They are fundamental human controls and restraints, which help build a sound and healthy relationship. When these are neglected any relationship would wither and come to an end.

Quantum Creativity OPENING NEW PATHS TO EXPANDING SELF DISCOVERY

R

EMEMBER YOUR CHILDHOOD DREAMS?

We all had childhood dreams. Maybe you wanted to be a doctor, teacher, lawyer or firefighter. Maybe you dreamt of something a bit less traditional like a painter, actor, inventor, or even an astronaut. Maybe you even saw yourself as a globetrotting Indiana Jones, unearthing ancient mysteries. Maybe you still do. Children are beautifully innocent. Too young to learn fear, doubt, or procrastination, they’re always dreaming. The free and magical brain of a child perceives the world as an endless array of unlimited possibilities. They know what they want and they want it now. Everything is simple. So what happens to all of those childhood dreams? The same thing that always happens. Life. In the blink of an eye we’re all grown up and our childhood dreams slowly fade away. We’re told to “stop daydreaming” by our teachers and to “be realistic” by our parents. The Dreamer gives way to the Realist, as we pass through adulthood’s demanding rites of passage. However what if we could once again tap into the spirit of our childhood dreams and recapture the freedom of imagination to uncover and nurture our deepest desires? It’s never too late to become what you might have been, and the world of science is perhaps the last place you’d think could get us there, but Quantum Physics is now paving the way. It’s called Quantum Creativity, and it just may be one of the most powerful visualization techniques used for personal growth and transformation. Imagine that somewhere out there in the deep vastness of space and time, there’s another version of you who didn’t give up on those childhood dreams. Imagine what you MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

the Dreamer just might be doing. That’s where Quantum Creativity comes into play. In the sometimes strange and ever fascinating workings of the subatomic realm, there is a new model of the universe that is emerging, one that suggests that reality may in fact be connected to consciousness itself, and that the world we experience is ever responsive to our thoughts, feelings, and emotions–quite literally molding to meet our expectations. Some of our most brilliant thinkers suggest that we may be part of a giant cosmic hologram, projected quite literally from the edge of the universe. Or that we exist in an infinity of parallel worlds. Just like the boundless creativity of a child, Quantum Creativity techniques teach us to harness the power of imagination to visualize our future selves, knowing that the future of who we are tomorrow is not determined by who are today. This is an important ally when we feel stuck on a path and full of uncertainty. Now imagine if you will, that you could meet your Quantum Self, learn their ways, draw upon their skills, talent, experience and wisdom. Imagine you could actually feel and experience the life they are living. Know their happiness, success and joy. The late great philosopher Alan Watts once said, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” Quantum Creativity is the perfect way to lead life’s pas de deux and not merely follow. Remember the hardest part about changing paths and becoming someone new is cultivating the heartfelt belief that we actually can. And here's the precious gift. It doesn't matter how old you are, what you've previously experienced or suffered, or who you are today, the future is both created and negotiated. Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul.

11 Things

Every Bicyclist and Driver Should Know WRITTEN BY DAVID OLAN

M

4. The law says that a cyclist traveling at the speed of traffic may ride wherever they like on the road. If a cyclist is traveling slower than the speed of traffic they must ride as close to the right side of the road as possible. The exceptions are when they are passing, preparing to turn left, avoiding a hazard, or approaching a place where a right turn is authorized. However, on PCH veering into a traffic lane can be taking your life in your hands, even if you are in the “right.” Motorists need to know that they will be considered liable in these circumstances if they hit a bicyclist.

ALIBU IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAU! TIFUL AREAS IN THE WORLD.

When I’m cycling in Malibu, with our stunning coastline and spectacular mountain vistas, I am often overcome by the beauty of this amazing place we have the honor of calling home. Nevertheless, bicycling in Malibu – especially on Pacific Coast Highway – can be challenging and dangerous. With the Southern California car culture prevailing, the concept of “share our roads” is often nonexistent resulting in clashes between cyclists and motor vehicle drivers. Here are 11 legal recommendations that you, as a cyclist – or as a motor vehicle driver – need to know. 1. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, VC 21200, a bicyclist has all the rights and duties of a motor vehicle driver and is subject to all the provisions applicable to the driver of a vehicle. In other words, cyclists have as much right to the road as cars do. 2. Cyclists are bound by the same laws as a motor vehicle driver in regards to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 3. In most instances, your uninsured – underinsured insurance, which is included in your car insurance policy, will cover you in any bike accident you have. Olan Law strongly urges you to increase your uninsured – underinsured

MC FEBRUARY.MARCH 2015

insurance to the highest level the insurance company will permit to protect yourself if you are in a hit and run accident or in an accident in which the driver has either no insurance or not enough insurance to cover your bodily and/or property damage.

David Olan is a leading Los Angeles trial lawyer representing people who have suffered serious personal injuries or who have lost a loved one to a wrongful death. David also represents individuals in wrongful termination and breach of contract cases. For a free, no-obligation consultation, contact David Olan at 310-566-0010 or at david@olanlaw.com, or visit www.olanlaw.com.

5. One of the most frequent types of bike accidents is “dooring”. If the driver (or passenger) of a motor vehicle opens their door and a bicyclist is taken down, the motorist is at fault. A good way to ensure this does not happen is by opening your door with your right hand, which will force you to turn to look behind you. 6. Bicyclists must be very cautious of potholes. They can cause serious personal injuries and even a wrongful death. If you are

injured in a bike accident because of a pothole, the Los Angeles County and/or the City of Malibu may be liable. 7. Riding on sidewalks is regulated by counties and cities. Almost every city has its own ordinances concerning bike riding on sidewalks. In the areas probably of most concern to Malibu residents, Los Angeles County (unincorporated areas such as Marina Del Rey), Malibu, and Santa Monica, do not permit riding on the sidewalk, and you can be ticketed. 8. Bicyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet while riding a bike. 9. Bicyclists may not wear ear plugs or head phones in both ears while riding. Hearing aids are permitted. 10. Bicyclists must yield the right of way to pedestrians in marked crosswalks or in unmarked crosswalks at intersections. 11. Though police reports often incorrectly assign blame to the cyclist in a bike – motor vehicle accident, you still want a police report made. Police often are biased against cyclists or do not know the laws as they pertain to cyclists; however, they are rarely wrong about the facts (where, when, speeds, etc.), of a case. This can be of great help to your attorney.

Drive safely out there.

AN IMPROBABLE LOVE STORY

D

URING A FRESHMAN ENGLISH composi-

tion class at the University of Notre Dame, I was told by my professor, J.X. Brennan, that if I put my mind to it, during my life time I should be capable of writing three books. At the time I thought, why would anyone make such a preposterous, overly ambitious statement? Moving on, I was informed that a required part of my academic sequence to earning a Bachelor’s degree in the School of Arts and Letters was a completed course in English Literature. Begrudgingly I signed up for the

class and braced myself for the battle with Geoffrey Chaucer, Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, and William Shakespeare. On the first day of class, in walks this tall and angular priest dressed in traditional black and white garb, with dark, deep set eyes and a resonant voice. “My name is Chester A. Soleta”, he announced, “Soleta is of Greek origin. It’s my pleasure to teach you English Literature this semester. My goal is to make it live in your souls.” Damn, I said to myself, what a powerful statement! However, I had no intention of letting “English Lit” get anywhere near my soul. A good passing grade would be fine. We methodically plowed through the first part of the course and got to the modern poetry section. That’s when Father Soleta informed us that poetry was his love and his specialty. Don’t be surprised, he warned, if sometime during the course you are hit by the thunder bolt of poetic expression. We began our trek through fertile fields of rhyme, rhythm, free verse, meter and metaphor. Father recited to us his favorite poem: T.S. Elliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. As he read the lines of the first stanza: “Let us go then you and I, when the evening is spread out against the sky, like a patient etherized upon a table….” BOOM! I was immediately hit by the bolt which I have never been able to shake. All these years I have indulged in the world of poetry while writing my own creative narratives. Three years ago I completed my first book of rhyme -- fifty poetic verses ably matched with paintings by major artists including LeRoy Neiman, Ernie Barnes, Tim Townsley, Anatole Kraznyansky, Charles Fazzino, Linnea Perola and Aldo Luongo. Its title is Life’s Reflections, Poetry for the People. I am happy to announce that the first publication run sold out and a second printing is being discussed. Some dare call it Love. As we approach Valentine’s Day and our thoughts turn to matters of the heart, I’d like to share one of the love oriented nuggets from my book. Question: Have you ever been engulfed in feelings for another person but felt unsure about giving into them? If so, perhaps you will identify with my poem, Could it Be?

Could It Be? Dancing ribbons in the skies, soft warm sunsets in my eyes, moonlight glowing up above, could it be that I’m in love? Tommy Hawkins: Two year Notre Dame basketball All American. Ten year National Basketball Association player. College lecturer, Golden Mike, and Emmy Award nominated Radio and televsion broadcaster. Public relations executive. Los Angeles, VP of communications and an author.

Time goes by but I don’t know it, inner strain, try not to show it. Counting doves but never sheep, yes, it’s difficult to sleep. Reveries my favorite scene from it happiness I glean, but loneliness is hard to bear when the lady isn’t there. Utopian thoughts twirl in my head, nights without her I just dread, but gorgeous flowers line my way, along another cloud nine day. Candle light and sparkling wine to her lovely eyes adds shine, elegant and so serene living this romantic scene. Surrender to her warm embrace, kisses gently bathe my face, turn out the lights, fold back the spread, we are wonderful in bed. In living passion bodies sway, there is no time, there is no day, aloft in never ending space dead heat in a lover’s race. Is this the one to God I pray? Please don’t let her go away, a gentle push, a caring shove, could it be that I’m in love? As Frank Sinatra sings: “The world will pardon my mush, but I’ve just got a crush, my baby, on you.” Happy Valentine’s Day!

Don't be afraid to say my name On you my love will lay no claim For it is not a give-take game, And it won't ask that every look or every laugh of me you memorize Just let it fill the vacant part Around the corners of your heart It's bound with only ribbons and no ties. And should your fingers touch my hand As minds run barefoot in the sand No promise will my love command, And it won't need to hear that you will see my image in another's eyes Just let it fill the vacant part Around the corners of you heart It's bound with only ribbons and no ties. Caffe' Delfini Ristorante (Santa Monica Canyon)

It has oft been said that many leading men (and ladies) get younger looking with age. Well, Caffe' Delfini turned 25, and we’d like to think it fits that adage as well, perhaps due in part to our Trade Marked Zinguini, that now has legions of loyal customers and fans. Several areas around the world are known for longevity, due to the diet. The Okinowans, who subsist on seaweed, are the longest living. The Hunzans have never had a case of cancer and they subsist on apricot kernels with their vitamin B17. But closer to home, and to the cuisine here at Caffe' Delfini, the French and Italians attribute their robust health to their Mediterranean diet. Their Zinguini incorporates that healthful diet into something that looks, rolls, and is shaped like pasta but is, voila, 100% zucchini. It has all the healthy effects of vegetables and only one third the calories and carbs of pasta, and, is gluten free. It mixes great with popular tomato sauce dishes like Spicy Diablo, Bolognese, Puttanesca, and many more of the traditional favorites. Or, try it with the delectable P.E.I. black mussels and cannelloni beans in a spicy tomato sauce with pecorino cheese. Many agree that Caffe' Delfini remains one of the most romantic spots on the West side.
