WHAT IS “MELANOMA”?
MELANOMA IS THE MOST AGGRESSIVE AND DEADLY OF ALL SKIN CANCERS. It is often noticed as an irregular discolored mole on the skin. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-24 years old. The majority of melanoma cases can be attributed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Patients at high risk for developing melanomas are those with significant past sun exposure and damage, especially those with multiple severe blistering sunburns. One or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence more than double a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. A history of indoor tanning quadruples the risk of acquiring melanomas. Other risk factors include numerous atypical moles, family history in multiple blood relatives, personal history of other skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. According to the National Cancer Institute, melanoma kills 8700 patients a year in the United States, and there were an estimated 114,900 new cases in 2010. The incidence of many common cancers is falling, but the incidence of melanoma continues to rise at a rate faster than that of any of the seven most common cancers. Melanoma accounts for less than five percent of skin cancer cases, yet causes more than 75 percent of skin cancer deaths. As board-certified dermatologists we believe in the importance of regular skin cancer screening in patients at high risk for melanoma. Regular skin cancer screening is highly effective for early detection. Skin cancer screenings and thorough examinations by dermatologists can prevent the development of the more advanced or end-stage melanoma. The majority of these melanomas, if examined by the dermatologist, are discovered at an early stage and treated with surgical excision, with cure rates of greater than 95%. Survivors of melanoma are about nine times as likely as the general population to develop a new melanoma, emphasizing the importance of getting regular checks from your dermatologists. Unfortunately, the more advanced melanomas are not amenable to surgery alone. Random health fair screenings and self-performed skin exams cannot be substituted for serial professional skin examinations done by dermatologists. In our practice, highrisk patients are closely followed. We work together with a multi-disciplinary team of specialists with expertise in their fields including dermatologists, oncologists, surgical oncologists, dermatopathologists, epidemiologists to offer patients a comprehensive treatment plan and therapy through innovative clinical trials in melanoma. Call us today to schedule a full body skin check with one of our physicians. www.dermatology-center.com

A:
HAVE YOU HAD RECURRENT COLDS OR ALLERGY ATTACKS THAT DON’T SEEM TO GO AWAY? IF SO, THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE YOU HAVE HAD SINUSITIS. OVER 37 MILLION PEOPLE ARE AFFLICTED WITH SINUSITIS EACH YEAR.
When is a cold actually sinusitis? The majority of sinus infections are caused by bacteria that become trapped in blocked sinuses. Bacteria flourish in the sinuses creating symptoms of runny nose, congestion, facial pain & pressure. Sinus infections are usually preceded by a cold or allergy attack, which contributes to sinus blockage. It can worsen by exposure to environmental pollutants. Unlike colds or allergies, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics to cure the infection and prevent future complications. Normally, mucus collecting in the sinuses drains into the nasal passages. When people have a cold or allergy attack, sinuses become inflamed and unable to drain, leading to congestion and repeated infections. Diagnosis of acute sinusitis usually is based on physical examination and discussion of your symptoms. X-rays of your sinuses or a sample of your nasal discharge is used to test for bacteria. When Acute Becomes Chronic Sinusitis When you have frequent sinus infections, or the infection lasts three months or more, you most likely suffer from chronic sinusitis. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis may be less severe than those of acute sinusitis; however, untreated chronic sinusitis can cause damage to the sinuses and can require surgery to correct the blockage and relieve the symptoms. Treatment Bacterial sinusitis: Therapy for bacterial sinusitis includes appropriate antibiotics. In addition, oral or nasal spray or drop decongestants may be recommended to relieve congestion. We do not recommend prolonged use of nonprescription nasal sprays or drops. Inhaling steam or using saline nasal sprays or irrigations are effective to relieve sinus discomfort. Diagnosis can be made by looking into the nasal cavity with a small endoscope and if necessary an x-ray scan of the sinuses can be taken. If it is determined that your sinus passages are narrowed or blocked leading to symptomatic sinus infections or chronic sinusitis, there are now a number of state-of-the-art options to correct this condition. The latest is Balloon Sinuplasty, which is a minimally invasive procedure for patients suffering from sinus blockage. The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia and allows patients rapid recovery. The technology for this procedure was adopted from angioplasty in which small balloon catheters are used to dilate either blocked vessels, or in the case of sinuses, blocked drainage pathways. Minimally invasive surgery is also available to correct anatomic deformities, which lead to obstruction of the sinuses. www.calwestent.com

!WARDING OFF ACTUAL AGE"RELATED MEMORY LOSS#
[ Hermine Hilton, one of America’s most popular speakers, is the author of several books on memory including “The Executive Memory Guide”(Simon&Schuster) and her latest book titled “Fuhhgeddaboutit!”(How To Stop Worrying About Your Memory). You may have heard her on Radio or seen her on Television with David Letterman; Charlie Rose; Matt Lauer; Bryant Gumbel or a host of others. She is the creator of Sonik Memory and the memory motivator for the Fortune Five Hundred companies from Nordstrom to NASA, and is known internationally from the Netherlands to Nigeria, Turkey to Thailand, Italy to Israel, and almost all other points on the planet. (She is also known as ‘The Lady On The Mountain’ to those of you in Malibu who drive Corral Canyon.)]
I
N MY AUG/SEPT MALIBU CHRONICLE ARTICLE (“Lose The ‘Senior
Moment’ Blues”) I suggested you erase the phrase “I’m having a Senior Moment” from your vernacular as it sends a very debilitating and negative message to your psyche, and your memory does not have to atrophy with age. I promised, if you would do that, I would cover in this article just what can be done to ward off actual age-related memory loss. Your maturity monogamously messing up your memory is a monomaniacal myth. Don’t let an old fallacy that doesn’t hold water anymore drown you! If you are physically healthy (eating right/ getting enough rest and exercise)… If your blood is still circulating… If you’re not suffering from any disease affecting your brain… then…; your memory should continue to work for you no-matter what your age.
The Mind Is A Connecting Machine Even at 100, (if you’re still breathing) the brain will continue to sprout new cells. And
MC OCTOBER.NOVEMBER 2014
the mind is definitely a connecting machine. A stimulated brain at every age will continue to make connections between these cells. The 80 year old who is focused and has learned the basic abc’s of activating his memory… a-Collect (focus on what you want to remember)…; b-Connect (the new to the known)…; c-Recollect (Rethink your connection)…; will very often do better with remembering than the 18 year old. This is because his 80 years of experiences give him far more readily available connections.
SO STOP WORRYING Every time you have a bout of forgetfulness, you’re not on the path to Alzheimer’s. Don’t even go there. Everyone, no-matter what age or occupation, educated or not, is forgetful from time to time. Who hasn’t lost his train of thought or even gotten on the wrong train? Who hasn’t forgotten the name of someone they just met, or where the car was parked? (Including this author of memory books. My daughter, Espree, takes great delight in introducing me as “My mother, the forgetterer,” whenever this occurs.) Do you remember when
you were school age and doing your homework? You went to the kitchen for a glass of milk- stuck your head in the refrigerator- and wondered what you were looking for? Did you worry at that time you were on your way to Alzheimer’s? I doubt it. We’ve all made a trip or two down that ‘what am I doing here?’ road. Fortunately… … it’s a very minute number of us who will end up on The Dementia Daybed. Those bouts of forgetful-

ment is a first step. And it starts with something called a synapse. Ever heard of a synapse? Well now’s the time to hit the ‘save’ key on your mental computer and start listening. The brain has a network of interconnecting cells (neurons) that communicate with each other. The point of communication between these cells is called a synapse. We have to keep these synapses strong, because, among their many functions, they hold the keys to memory and learning. They help chemicals called neurotransmitters to spread information throughout the brain’s network.
Keep Your Mind Exercised. By keeping your mind exercised you will be giving your brain the stimulation it needs to form new patterns of connectivity, strengthen your synapses and avoid memory decline. The more you use your ‘thinking cap’ the more you’ll get your brain cells to communicate with each other. This forges creation of new cells. Just like communication between couples in a marriage is necessary to keep the marriage strong, the same can be said for your matrimonial brain cells. Don’t let them stop communicating with each other. The stoppage will make it harder for the brain to process thoughts, retain short-term memory, and create new cells.
Avoid Deterioration. Mental performance is totally reliant on the brain’s network of synapses. Deterioration or loss of synapses can result in lost memory and affect brain functioning. This deterioration brings on the disorders of aging. But if you keep your synapses strong and growing you can counter this deterioration.
REMEMBER THESE WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SYNAPSES: A
ness are just normal. They’re SOP for the average adult whose multi-tasking, frantically scheduled life, simply calls for remembering too much. And if you’re feeling under the weather, physically or emotionally, it doesn’t make it any easier. It only compounds the situation. Not only is a bout of forgetfulness from T to T normal, it would be abnormal if you never had one.

Stay healthy by eating right with a diet rich in antioxidants.
Get lots of sleep.
C Exercise and get oxygen to your brain.

Stimulate your brain with new experiences.
Reduce stress.
F Challenge yourself intellectually.

And if you’re seriously concerned, go the whole nine yards………………. Take up the violin!
Is There Something I Can Do…
You’ll be Rememberizing.
… to ward off ACTUAL age related memory loss? ABSOLUTELY! I call it a path to ‘Rememberizing’. For starters, one must be aware of how memory happens inside the brain. So, understanding the workings of your instru-

IS HORMONE METABOLIC BALANCE IMPORTANT FOR MY WELLNESS?
BY DEFINITION, HORMONES ARE SUBSTANCES PRODUCED IN OUR BODIES THAT CONTROL AND REGULATE THE ACTIVITY OF CELLS AND ORGANS DISTANT FROM THE POINT OF ORIGIN. Many hormones are active in more than one final destination or process. Hormones are essential for every activity of life! “Hormone Metabolic Balance”, is a term that I use in my practice to describe the fine-tuning of the relationships amongst different hormones. Similar to how the instruments in a symphony must be in accord with each other, hormones have to be in a fine balance with each other for optimum health to occur. In our current society we are starting to see hormone imbalances as early as late teens and early twenties, particularly those imbalances related to insulin excess, that eventually lead to abdominal weight gain and pre-diabetes. A great part of the female population has an overt progesterone deficiency by the time they are in the late thirties. This imbalance is associated with fibrocystic breast, progressive PMS, heavy periods, headaches, insomnia, uterine fibroids, water retention and plainly said, feeling completely off for 2 weeks every month. When this situation continues to go unchecked it is usually referred to as “estrogen dominance”, but in reality is originated as progesterone deficiency. By the age of 40, most males and females driven by our fast pace of life, stress and poor food choices, have a degree of adrenal distress that results in sugar, salt and alcohol cravings and fatigue. Thyroid function can be compromised under these circumstances. By the time we reach fifty years old, estrogen for females and testosterone for males and females becomes compromised. Both play a big role in the immune system, brain function, memory, neurotransmitter health, sleep, mood and recall. In addition, both are essential for bone preservation and bone health. Hormone metabolic balance is essential for our wellness and requires a multipronged approach in order for us to truly achieve it. True wellness is a result of careful attention to nutrition, exercise, hormone balance and liver-gastrointestinal support. Follow me on Twitter @LatinaDoctor. Q:
A:
HOW CAN I CHANGE MY LIFESTYLE TO HELP PREVENT VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEINS?
WHILE YOU CANNOT ENTIRELY PREVENT VARICOSE VEINS, THERE ARE QUITE A FEW WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR VEIN HEALTH. Physical activity, such as walking, swimming or cycling, is a wonderful way to pump blood up the leg against gravity to improve circulation. Compression hose may also help improve circulation by preventing blood from pooling in the leg veins. Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They also are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. Often, they are red or blue. They can look like tree branches or spiderwebs with their short, jagged lines. They can be found on the legs and face and can cover either a very small or very large area of skin. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins are typically not raised above the skin’s surface. If you think that you are suffering from varicose veins, or more serious symptoms like swelling and pain in your legs, that may be indicative of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). To properly diagnose CVI your physician will perform a physical exam and then a vascular or duplex ultrasound may be used to examine the blood circulation in your legs. CVI is a progressive medical condition in which the valves that regulate blood flow direction from the legs to the heart no longer function, causing blood to pool in the legs and veins to swell. CVI occurs when stresses on the venous system weaken the vein structure. When the veins become weakened or diseased, vein valves no longer promote efficient blood flow and blood pools in the legs. This impaired blood flow (or reflux) causes veins to expand, lose form and protrude from beneath the skin. Since varicose veins cannot always be prevented, it is important to talk to a vein specialist about treatment options before the condition progresses into CVI or symptoms worsen. In the meantime you can help your legs feel better by making the following lifestyle changes: Manage blood pressure and body weight • Exercise regularly, focusing on exercises that work your legs (run or walk) • Elevate your legs whenever possible • Avoid prolonged standing or sitting • Avoid clothes that are tight around the waist, thighs or legs • Strengthen calf muscles • Eat a diet low in salt and rich in high-fiber foods www.coastalvascularcenter.com

MC OCTOBER.NOVEMBER 2014

EELING GRATE! FUL WHEN YOU HAVE PLENTY IS EASY.
Feeling grateful when you’ve been robbed of the most fundamental possessions in your life: your freedom, your dignity, your sense of being, seems like an impossible task. But not for Virginia Isaias, a survivor of sex trafficking whose journey is part of the documentary film Sands of Silence: Journey into Trafficking, which I am producing/directing and which we hope to release in 2015.
After enduring years of violence at the hands of the husband she was forced to marry at 16, Virginia Isaias left her home in Southern California for her hometown in Mexico. There, Virginia started a business selling clothes to ranchos. One early morning, as Virginia was breast-feeding her baby at a market, she felt a blow in her back. When she woke up she found herself in a shack hundreds of miles away in the midst of the Chiapas jungle. The traffickers told her that her baby had been sold, and using excruciating torture methods, forced her into prostitution. Virginia eventually escaped and returned to the U.S. Starting from zero, she cleaned houses and worked for over ten years at a parachute factory, scrimping and saving to buy a humble house. Virginia became a U.S. citizen.

Survivor and Founder, Human Trafficking Survivors Foundation.
Virginia Isaias and Meryl Streep
Chelo Alvarez-Stehle is a journalist and documentary filmmaker originally based in Malibu.
In 2010 she created Human Trafficking Survivors Foundation, a501(c)3 in Anaheim, CA. She invested her meager savings in her foundation, and risked losing her house in the endeavor. With no more resources than her passion, Virginia became a walking hotline. When she was asked to help rescue a victim of domestic violence who had been burned and disfigured with acid and was hanging onto life by a thread, Virginia did not hesitate to risk her life and travel far into Mexico. The mothers of the three recently disappeared young girls in Anaheim reached out to Virginia’s foundation when they felt authorities were not making a huge effort in rescuing girls that allegedly had links to prostitution. Phone calls regarding cases of labor trafficking, sexual trafficking, domestic violence or child abuse, are the norm in Virginia’s day to day. This is why Virginia organizes educational outreach events and has a following of hundreds of Latino women throughout Southern California, many of whom do not speak English and would never think of raising their issues with the police. Virginia is thankful for being alive and everyday she strives to share her gratitude with others in need.
Virginia was nominated to the 100 Make a Difference project, along with celebrities from Gwyneth Paltrow and Maria Shriver to Prince Edward and Eva Longoria. www.100makingadifference.com Please help Virginia in her efforts by donating to Human Trafficking Survivors Foundation (Fundación de Sobrevivientes de TráficoHumano), a 501(c)3: www.fsth.org (click on “Donaciones”) Please help us finish this independent and labor of love documentary through a taxdeductible donation: www.sandsofsilence.org

WHAT EXACTLY IS “SCIATICA”?
FOR THOSE WITH CHRONIC BACK PAIN NOT ALL OF THE PAIN REMAINS IN THE BACK. Often, the pain can radiate into different extremities. One of the most common forms of this radiating pain is what is known as Sciatica. Sciatica is classified as an intense shooting pain or burning that originates in the lower back and radiates down the leg and hip that can be persistent or intermittent. This can also be accompanied by weakness or numbness in the affected leg and is often aggravated by strenuous activity or prolonged periods of sitting or standing. Those who suffer from Sciatica often find it difficult to climb stairs, walk long distances or get a good night’s sleep. However, many people are unaware that Sciatica is not actually a condition but rather a symptom of an underlying spinal condition. At each level of the spine there are nerve roots that exit on either side and control a motor or neurological function. Compression or irritation to these nerves may manifest as a variety of symptoms depending on the vertebrae in the spine that is affected. Sciatica is often a symptom of a herniated disc of the lumbar spine, typically the L4-L5 or L5-S1 vertebrae. Luckily, there are several effective treatment options to relieve Sciatic pain, including Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures. These procedures utilize a very small incision to decompress the nerves and relieve the symptoms. Furthermore, the use of this small incision eliminates unnecessary dissection of muscle and tissue and substantially reduces recovery time. For those suffering from Sciatica, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible as this condition is an obvious sign of nerve injury in the spine. If treated early enough, the pain will subside with no lasting nerve damage. However, if left untreated, irreversible damage to the nerve can occur causing lasting pain and potential loss of sensation and certain functions of the leg. Why wait? Stop living with pain. IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE TO GET A NEW SET OF BEAUTIFUL TEETH IN JUST ONE DAY?
YES, IT IS! Previously, implants to restore a full set of teeth with six or more implants would take several months and usually involve bone grafts. Patients would be without teeth or with poor-fitting dentures for more than a year. Today, the All-on-Four™ system uses the fewest implants and avoids invasive bone graft surgery. Four implants (two placed at an angle) take full advantage of your existing bone structure to anchor permanent teeth. Now, you can leave the same day with beautiful, permanent teeth! Most people wonder how teeth on implants can be put on the same day? Think of it like this, if you fractured your leg and went to a hospital the doctors would put you in a cast. The purpose of that cast would be to immobilize the bone fragments so that they could heal. Teeth on implants the same day work exactly that way. The teeth serve as a cast for the implants so the implants don’t move and are allowed to heal. The All-on-4™ procedure typically involves only two to four visits for consultation. Your Prosthodontist and Surgeon will gather information (using CAT scans, X-rays, impressions and photos) to design the best treatment plan. After consultation, your new teeth are fitted and adjusted—all in a single session. Advantages of this procedure are: No invasive grafting… People who have a fear of losing their teeth and wearing a denture never have to experience removable teeth… Procedure is done the same day… You walk in that morning with no teeth or failing teeth and walk out that afternoon with fixed permanent teeth… Less Cost… Quicker treatment time. • At Anacapa Dental we are Specialists in Implant Dentistry. • We are Prosthodontists, true specialists in cosmetic and implant dentistry. • We have performed the procedure for the last 14 years. • We teach this procedure to dentists nationally and internationally. • We provide a 10 year warranty; this is how confident we are that this will work for you. • We will take very good care of you and your beautiful new smile. www.anacapadental.com

do smoothies, soft foods, salad dressings, soups, parfaits, puddings, and nut butters. Basically, if you want to be healthy, you must have a good high-speed blender. Of course, people are concerned about the price. A quality blender can range between $400 to $650, but it will last you for decades if you take care of it, and it often comes with a very long warranty. If you’re looking to eat healthy, this opens up lots of options to literally hundreds of recipes that you wouldn’t be able to do with a normal $30 blender. It’ll change your world.
ARE THERE ANY TIPS, STRATEGIES, OR NEW TRADITIONS YOU RECOM! MEND FOR READERS TO GET THROUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON?
ARE THERE SPECIALTY ITEMS NEEDED TO SWITCH TO A RAW OR VEGAN PLANT!BASED DIET?
The two crucial pieces of kitchen equipment that I recommend, which would really open the world to infinite possibilities for recipes would be: 1) A really good kitchen knife. I’m always shocked when I go to a client’s house, including my celebrity clients, and they have horrible knives. Old knives, broken knives, or even knives that haven’t been sharpened since the 1990s! Get a really good high-quality, well-made kitchen knife. I generally find that German or Japanese knives are best. And if you spend around $100 on a good knife, it’ll last you forever. Keep it sharp. It’s a great tool. 2) A high-speed blender is the other essential piece of kitchen equipment. My two favorite brands are Blendtec and Vitamix. Having a hightech blender allows you to do basically everything under the sun. You can

Yes. The key, if you’re trying to eat healthy throughout the holidays, is rather than coming to family dinners or gatherings with really weird new things, I would concentrate on finding familiar, very flavorful versions of existing comfort food recipes. You can do really healthy mashed potatoes. You could put some parsnip in there and use organic potatoes. Instead of milk, you can use coconut milk. Instead of butter, you could use coconut oil. You can have the same creamy texture and the same delicious, rich flavor, but this would be much healthier than the original version. Another easy one is pumpkin pie. Making a healthy version of Cranberry sauce is also easy. People are now doing a lot of great casseroles and potpies with things like tempeh or vegetables. So these are the kind of familiar holiday recipes that I’ve been successfully able to take to family gatherings back in Detroit. And I didn’t tell
people these dishes were healthier in the early days because all they cared about was that they tasted amazing. The thing to remember about the holidays with your friends and family is that the bottom line is that the food tastes really good. If you start bringing sprout salads and gooseberry puree, people are going to get freaked out. For ideas, I have a 90minute DVD available called Simple Vegan Classics, with 10 really delicious raw vegan comfort food recipes like chicken salad, chili, brownies, ranch dressing and salad. You can order it off my website.
ANOTHER GREAT GIFT! DO YOU HAVE ANY FINAL THOUGHTS FOR ANYONE CHOOSING TO EMBARK ON THIS RAW VEGAN PLANT!BASED COOKING ADVENTURE?
It can be intimidating to start; it was for me too. Don’t be afraid to reach out to recipes and resources online. The Internet is a tremendous place to find new recipes and new ingredient suggestions. I would recommend that people just start gradually. You don’t have to do this cold turkey overnight. You don’t have to change your entire lifestyle. Just try maybe adding one new recipe or one new ingredient per week and see how you feel. I think those who make a gradual transition into a healthier lifestyle will have the best long-term chances of success. So take it easy on yourself, have fun with it, and go slow.

•Directions 1 Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. 2 Clean the lamb. Cut each lamb chop individually and trim excess fat. 3 In a bowl, stir together the mustard, white wine, olive oil, salt and pepper. Then put the lamb chops in the bowl and place it in the refrigerator for about 1 hour. The longer the lamb stays in the marinade, the more tender the lamb becomes. 4 While the lamb is marinating, create a sauce by heating a pan with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add minced garlic and cook until browned, then stir in temuric, butter, paprika, and cayenne pepper. 5 Add heavy cream and cook on low heat for 5 minutes.

The following guidelines have been out for a while, but when we tend to change up our make-up going into a new season, take note of what you should perhaps replace and what you should trash. Also, for those of you who prefer to wear only all natural cosmetics that contain plant– derived ingredients, and no preservatives, these products should be used within six months of purchasing.

DOMINIC PANGBORN / 33
He was born in Korea in 1952 -- a by-product of the Korean War. His father an unknown American G.I., his mother a poor Korean villager; She was left to raise him - and his two full-Korean siblings -- on her own in a post-war country that was devastated economically, physically, and emotionally. Faced with the knowledge that her mixed-race son would likely encounter a lifetime of prejudice and limited opportunities in Korea, she sent him to the United States at the age of 10 to be adopted by the Pangborn family of Jackson, Michigan. Most children would balk at the thought of leaving their home and family, but Dominic saw it for what it was: an opportunity. And he embraced it. The language and culture barriers were formidable at first for Dominic; however, those same barriers might have been what ultimately led him to art. He discovered at that early age that art allowed him to express himself to the fullest without the need for words. He bought his first set of paint and boards at the age of 12. Quickly grasping the medium, he sold his first painting for $145 to a colleague of his father. It was there his art career was born. He enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Art immediately after high school. Looking for financial security, he majored in graphic design. He got his first apprenticeship at the Ed Jaster Studio. One year later, in 1973, he was promoted, but not to designer -- he was named chief designer. He oversaw the entire studio, leading many veteran designers, including his original boss. One of his first innovations was to replace the boring flip charts used by a client into a multi-graphics presentation using several slide projectors – a revolutionary style that would years later be considered the precursor to modern day PowerPoint.

HEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND FITNESS,
one repetitive mistake I often see is that people have unrealistic goals and expectations when it comes to losing weight and getting into shape. Telling yourself “I’m going to lose 30 pounds in a month” is not a realistic goal. You have to remember it took you time to gain weight and get out of shape, and it’s going to take time to lose weight and get back into shape. There is no real rush to health and fitness, losing weight and getting into shape. It is about a healthy lifestyle, mentally, physically and emotionally. In my opinion, the first thing that needs to happen is that you have to throw the word “diet” out of your vocabulary! The word “diet” to most people implies, “I’m going to eat healthy for a little while, lose a little bit of weight, feel better about myself, then, I’m going to go back to all of my bad habits and gain all the weight back and then some”. The word “diet” needs to be erased from your vocabulary and replaced with healthy choices with good eating habits as a lifestyle. One thing I always tell my clients about eating healthy is, if you have to ask yourself “is this a good choice to eat?”, then you probably shouldn’t eat it. Most people don’t ask themselves if they should have a second piece of grilled chicken, or ask if they should have extra green beans. But, they will ask themselves about a second helping of cake or another beer. If you have to think about it, don’t have it.
The second thing I tell my clients is not to go overboard on workouts at the start -up. It is counterproductive to work out so hard the first week. You’ll make yourself so sore you won’t want to, or can’t work out the following week. Working toward a weight goal and getting in shape is a marathon, not a sprint! Build yourself up steadily and start off with two or three days a week. You will get stronger and have more stamina as you build up your conditioning and your strength. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Thirdly, don’t judge and compare your progress or your fitness to anyone else’s. You are your own person. You should not judge your workout to a previous workout either. You will have days that are better than others, and you will have days that are worse than others. As long as you get yourself to the gym, or out to the beach walking, or whatever your workout may be… as long as you are working out, you are making progress. The hardest part for me sometimes is just walking through the door to the gym. I like to tell my clients on days they don’t feel like working out, just talk yourself into walking through the door. It is much easier to get into it once you’ve done that. Remember, workouts should be fun. If you are not enjoying yourself, you are not going to go back. Try to find something that you like about it. And it doesn’t have to be what anyone else likes. It only needs to be what you like. It is not going to be easy BUT it is worth it.

“BRAND BUILDING” NEW MASERATI GHIBLI ENHANCES THE CARMAKER’S LINE"UP WITH A MORE YOUTHFUL FEEL
I
T TAKES A LOT OF GUTS FOR MASERATI TO INTRODUCE AN ENTRY LEVEL VEHICLE IN ITS LINEUP.
Namely, because if the car doesn’t live up to the company’s 100 year legacy it could jeopardize the very foundation the brand was built on. Clearly, that hasn’t been the case with the new Maserati Ghibli, which made its debut in the U.S. earlier this year and has helped send Maserati sales
soaring to a record high. The mid-size sedan not only pays homage to the Italian brand’s heritage in a unique way, but it also delivers on everything you’d expect from a Maserati, from styling to performance. In fact, a novice in the world of cars might easily mistake the Ghibli for the much pricier Maserati Quattroporte at a quick glance. Now, don’t get me wrong, the Ghibli and Quattoporte are considerably different as my recent test drive of both cars

audio system, as well as WiFi compatibility. Simply put, the Ghibli is everything you’d expect from Maserati in a more affordable package, which is why the car accounted for 85 percent of The Auto Gallery’s Maserati sales in August. Fabrizio Di Cicco, sales manager at The Auto Gallery, said the Ghibli has drawn in a range of new customers to the dealership. “The Ghibli has had a huge impact on the Maserati,” notes Di Cicco. ”The brand has never before had an automobile that was in the $70,000 range and a lease special around $650 per month.” First launched as a two-door car in 1963, the all-new four-door sedan is available in three trim levels in the U.S. including the Ghibli, the Ghibli S, the Ghibli S Q4, each model specifically engineered for those who desire something a bit more unique in the world of performance. The 101 Freeway, which runs east of The Auto Gallery in Calabasas, proved to be great testing grounds to get a feel for the Ghibli’s performance capabilities, which are pretty impressive even when benchmarked against its higherpriced sibling, the Quattroporte. Powered by 410-horsepower twin turbo-charged, 3.0-liter V6, you quickly get the sense of why so many first-time Maserati buyers have been drawn to the Ghibli, when at the wheel. Sensing you might be a bit hesitant at first, the Maserati Ghibli politely invites you in with its looks, then begs you to take it out and play when you start it up like a kid breaking for recess. The car’s eagerness to prove to you that it’s worthy of the Maserati badge makes it a thrill to drive especially in sport mode, which the company credits to the car’s perfectly balanced weight distribution, a doublewishbone front suspension and a stateof-the-art five-link rear suspension. The sedan is also available with allwheel drive to ensure ultimate performance in some of those more unpredictable weather conditions. Yup, make no mistake about it, the Ghibli is certainly worthy of the Maserati nameplate in more ways than one.

SANTA MONICA HOMEOPATHIC PHARMACY
BY JC CADENA
ENERATIONS OF LOYAL CUSTOMERS WALK THROUGH THE SANTA MONICA HOMEOPATHIC PHARMACY’S DOORS.
Bob’s Uncle Frank with Mary & Norman in 1950
MC OCTOBER.NOVEMBER 2014
Since 1944 clients have put their trust and their health in Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy’s hands and this trust has been well deserved. Herbalists, Homeopaths, Nutritionists and Pharmacists are there to help determine the best recommendations to help take control of your health and keep you healthy. Credit for such a successful business belongs to founders, Norman and Mary Litvak, who established a thriving business on four pillars Knowledge, Care, Integrity and Service. The doors first opened on October 8th, 1944. It was then called Santa Monica Drug Company. Mary and Norman had two boys, Don and Bob, who started school in Santa Monica the day the store opened. Norman and Mary were friendly people. Mary would be behind the candy counter with a sincere smile as she worked the register. Norman was in charge of the pharmacy and over the counter drugs located in the back of the store. At the end of the day Mary would clean the pharmacy while Norman took care of the banking. To service their customers the pharmacy was open 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. During this time drug stores sold liquor, cigarettes and prescription narcotics. Though they were money making products, Norman’s integrity led him to get rid of the liquor license in 1951. “I don’t care if it makes money, I didn’t become a pharmacist to harm my cus-
tomers,” were Norman’s words. He stopped selling all tobacco products and narcotics in the early 1960's. He stopped carrying these products and put a sign in the window that read “Homeopathic pharmacy, no hard drugs.” The business was growing and so were their two sons. After serving in the Air Force, Don became an air traffic controller and Bob worked in community centers, running children’s programs, eventually becoming a Center Director. Both returned to help their parents. After the '94 California earthquake the store moved to its current location at 7th & Broadway. Don & Bob saw the need to hire licensed practitioners for the thriving business. They were the ones who hired those expert Chinese herbalists, Homeopaths, Nutritionists and Pharmacists. The integrity & care came directly from the founders. The level of knowledge and service provided can be attributed to investing 30% of the income in salaries; the industry average is between 11 & 13%. Over their seventy years in business the Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy’s customers have included everyday citizens, along with Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Tony winners, Country Music award winners, three Mark Twain Humor award winners, even a Pulitzer Prize winner. And from the sporting world, thru their doors, came NBA champions, professional golfers, professional football players and 3 Olympic medalists. “When you can help somebody feel better and they come back and thank you, it's all worth it”, says Bob. Norman Litvak was a quiet man with a great sense of humor. When he talked, people listened. Mary was a genuine lady with a beautiful smile. People still ask about her today. Norman and Mary started their business supporting 1 family that now helps support over 20 families. Their care is genuine and it's felt. When Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy first opened their doors there were 15 pharmacies in downtown Santa Monica. When Bob returned to help his parents in 1991, there were only two - his parent’s and a medical building pharmacy. Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy has beat all the odds. Norman and Mary leave a legacy that earned trust and respect and continues to do so. According to the Small Business Administration: • 50% of small businesses last 5 years. • 33% of small businesses last 10 years. I wonder how many last 70 years.

Iris explains, "A man who had recently suffered a stroke was brought into my office. He was wheelchair bound and paralyzed, unable to speak or move his face. I fitted him with special hearing aids designed for listening to music. When he heard music again, his eyes lit up and his face came to life! It was the first time he had shown any signs of emotional expression since the stroke. His family was overjoyed to see his vitality. Everyone was crying, including me!" "We want to give every one of our patients unhurried care. And we do!" This sincere and compassionate personal care is the modus operandi that helps all patients at Hear Clear Hearing Aids achieve optimal hearing. In only two years, Dr. Vener and Iris Stone have expanded their practice to three cities – Calabasas, West Hills and Camarillo. Dr. Vener is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at both the David Geffen School of Medicine and the USC School of Medicine. Dr. Vener and audiologist, Iris Stone, M.A.-C.C.C. offer a unique model and the first program in the area to combine the expertise of a board certified Ear, Nose, and Throat physician, licensed in hearing aid dispensing, and a certified dispensing audiologist. Advanced technology and personalized treatment plans guarantee that every patient gets the most effective hearing aids for his or her specific
needs. Dr. Stone explains," We take the time for a full comprehensive audiology exam that considers the patient's special lifestyle needs. We offer the latest technology to meet these needs. This is why they actually work!" When you visit Hear Clear Hearing Aids to get your hearing checked, they will do the following: The audiologist gives you a comprehensive hearing exam. Then the audiologist will ask questions to learn about your day-to-day lifestyle. Do you live in a noisy environment? Do you work with background noise or loud sounds? Are your grandchildren in the home (which changes sound levels)? The audiologist also discusses budget and cosmetic needs. These factors are all considered to find the best hearing aid for each patient. Education and community resources are available at Hear Clear Hearing Aids for people interested in learning about hearing aids and hearing loss. In October there will be "Demo Days" at all office locations where you can listen to a complimentary presentation about a tiny hearing aid called Lyric.

Love versus Attachment
A
TTACHMENT IS ROOTED IN SELF!CEN! TEREDNESS, SELFISHNESS. Whereas
love is based on selflessness and sacrifice. Ironically, attachment is passed off as love. Love is measured essentially by one’s identification with others. When you become one with another. Other’s joy is your joy. Other’s sorrow is your sorrow. When you contact the world with no personal motives. Such an example of true love was seen in an episode in a factory in Mumbai, India. A worker operating a machine got a splinter in his eye by accident. The human resources officer and the resident doctor were taking him for treatment to the hospital. The moment the managing director of the plant heard about it he pulled out his private Mercedes car and rushed him to his personal ophthalmologist for treatment. He related to the worker as his own family member. That is an expression of true love.
Extract from the book 'The Holocaust of Attachment' by A. Parthasarathy
“ATTACHMENT AND POSSESSIVENESS IS THE TRUE CAUSE FOR SEPARATION AND DIVORCE BETWEEN SPOUSES, BETWEEN ANY TWO PERSONS.”
ATTACHMENT IS OPPOSED TO LOVE. Where one looks into one’s personal interest rather than that of another. A typical example of attachment was also noticed in Mumbai. It was a middle class parents’ attachment to their only son. The son was a prodigy in his subject, mathematics. He obtained a doctorate in Mumbai University. In recognition of his outstanding brilliance a foreign university offered him a prestigious scholarship for advanced study and research in his subject. His friends and well-wishers were delighted at the recognition and offer. Every detail was worked out for his departure. But his parents were too attached to him and refused to let him go. The boy and his well-wishers desperately tried to convince his parents to avail themselves of the unique opportunity for their son’s success and progress in
life. And that would not be just for him but for the advancement of the subject and the community at large. No amount of persuasion and advice could alter their personal stand. The parents stuck to their selfish interest, “We want our son to remain with us!” That is attachment. The reverse of love. Undoubtedly parents are fond of their children and do care for them. But their selfishness permeates their love and turns it sour. The beautiful emotion of love transforms into the ugly form of attachment. The children resist it, desist it. All ending up in confrontation, even separation. Study this equation carefully.
Love + Selfishness = Attachment Attachment - Selfishness = Love The world is infested with the deadly trait of attachment. The great English writer-poet Oliver Goldsmith in his novel The Vicar of Wakefield loudly proclaims there is no love left in the world:
And what is friendship but a name, A charm that lulls to sleep; A shade that follows wealth or fame, But leaves the wretch to weep? And love is still an emptier sound, The modern fair one’s jest, On earth unseen, Or only found to warm the turtle’s nest. What follows attachment is possessiveness. When you are attached to something you become possessive towards it. Attachment and possessiveness is the true cause for separation and divorce between spouses, between any two persons.

Reiki, body energy and cancer
"MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU...ALWAYS"
Reiki is an energy therapy, an energetic force, and can be used to help cancer patients.
I
’M PRETTY SURE THAT WE ALL
remember these immortal words, uttered by OB-Wan to Luke Skywalker in the first of the Star Wars films way back in 1977 (and again 20 years later). Fancy there being a force field that held everything in the entire universe together? It certainly was a preposterous idea. Little did I realize at the time that one day I too would be plugging into the force, just as Luke had done in his battle against Darth Vader. Only my job description was slightly different! Seeking a way of relieving the pain and discomfort my clients were experiencing in the battle with cancer, I was guided by a healing feeling to learn a Japanese healing technique called Reiki. The training was simple and on the day following the workshop I was able to place my hands on my friends, tap into an energy force, and let healing commence. Without realizing it, I had become an honorary Jedi Knight - using the force to combat the evil of cancer. And something happened: For about six

whole months the health of a client of mine was stabilized to such a point that she had a real quality of life. Something was naturalizing the toxic effects on her body and enabling healing to take place on all levels - physically, mentally, emotionally and, for those who believe we are more than a collection of moving parts, spiritually. Based upon my own experiences and those of others, I came to believe that Reiki certainly was a healing technique of immense power and have made it my career and life path. I have endeavored to get my head round the enormity and power of Reiki and to understand how it works during the course of my healing work at my own clinic. Reiki, pronounced ray-Kee and meaning "divinely guided life force energy", is a Japanese form of spiritual healing that can be practiced hands-on, hands-off or from a distance - also known as absent healing. The practitioner becomes empowered to access Reiki - a certain vibration of life force energy - by a Reiki Master, which has an almost instantaneous effect in connecting the student practitioner to the Reiki energy. From this moment onwards they are able to tune into and connect to Reiki, like tuning into a radio station, which then flows through their body and out from their hands to facilitate healing in themselves, other people, animals and even plants. Receiving Reiki brings about a state of profound relaxation. Relaxation has been proven to aid healing and promote general well-being. In a state of high anx-
iety, anger, fear or stress, the body goes into its natural ´light or flight´ state, and is therefore not in the right ´mood´ to heal itself. So relaxation and stress relief must be the first consideration for anybody fighting cancer. “I could physically feel the tingling on my tummy where the scar is - like a sewing machine stitching it up!” Ancient cultures of Tibet, India, America, and Australia, have long believed that man and his universe are interconnected, that we resonate with our world and are simply a part of everything around us.

“I HAVE CANCER. I HAVE PRACTICED REIKI FOR OVER A YEAR. I FIND THAT AFTER A SESSION OF REIKI I HAVE MORE ENERGY AND I FEEL GROUNDED.”

“Reiki goes very deep, it seems to touch our buried and hidden thoughts - it is as if an interior boil is lanced which allows the healing to begin.” During a Reiki session people will often experience a sense of deep relaxation and inner calm. This is not a hypnotized state and is not induced through any other means than via energy transference through the hands of the practitioner. It is a supporting, nurturing and safe feeling, rather than one of vulnerability. “I have cancer. I have practiced Reiki for over a year. I find that after a session of Reiki I have more energy and I feel grounded.” The recipients can boost their own healing process by being actively involved - using mental imagery or visualization is a powerful aid and amplifies the intent to be well. Remember - intent is your most powerful ally and it is far more powerful than just positive thinking. Reiki does work on a very physical level - it will relieve
pain, reduce swelling and accelerate the healing of wounds, broken bones and scars after surgery. It can even help to reduce the size of tumors, making their removal easier and it actively helps the body restore itself to a state of wellness and balance after surgical operations. Reiki is an extremely good alternative to tranquilizers and anti-depressants, as it works to raise self-esteem and, aided by a good counselor, you can work through the cause of the problems rather than dealing just with their symptoms. “I felt that my wounded soul is somehow healed - I am at peace today.” Many healthy people receive regular Reiki top-ups, just to keep balanced, well and vibrant. Whether you have cancer yourself or care for someone who has, Reiki will be of great benefit to you. Many nurses and care workers in Hospices and Hospitals are trained in Reiki.

VERYONE KNOWS THAT MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS $ includ-

However, hiding behind the eggnog in the living room and in the pantry in the kitchen and in the myriad stores and restaurants you frequent, lurks a lesser known danger, it’s the accident that causes serious personal injuries and even a wrongful death resulting in a premises liability lawsuit. Every homeowner, landlord, renter, management company, restaurateur, shop keeper, in effect, anyone responsible for a property is at risk for a premises liability lawsuit if someone is injured – or worse – on your property. And the holidays, with its increase in entertaining, shopping, and traveling, are ground zero for such lawsuits. A premises liability lawsuit is a negligence MC OCTOBER.NOVEMBER 2014
tort. Determining if you have a premises liability lawsuit and proving it, can be complicated, and it takes an attorney familiar with such lawsuits to handle it. The plaintiff attorney needs to prove that either you knew about the danger or you SHOULD HAVE KNOWN about the danger. For instance, let’s say you own an apartment building and kids frequently skateboard on the stairway. Let’s hypothesize that someone using the stairway falls and is injured when the railing gives way. It is not enough to say that the management company or property owner did not know of the loose railing, because the question becomes, should they have known. The management company or property owner will have to demonstrate it had an appropriate inspection and maintenance protocol that was followed. During the holidays, accidents happen, and you could be held responsible for them. Dog bite cases always spike during a holiday. Your friendly pooch is suddenly accosted by a whole host of loud strangers coming and going in his territory. A dog not accustomed to children may suddenly find these little twolegged animals a threat. Gates and doors are not

secured, letting Fido free to finally take on that annoying (in his world), neighbor’s dog. Electric cords lighting up charming decorations or heating delicacies or coffee on the buffet or counter can become deadly. Guests can trip over the cords or suffer extensive burns when they are covered in hot food or liquid. Spilled liquids can cause falls. That glass patio door can be walked through. Tree roots and cracked walkways can be tripped over, breaking bones. With one drink too many that annual Thanksgiving dinner argument can turn into fisticuffs and can evolve into a premises liability lawsuit against you. Ensure you have a happy holiday season. Do a risk inventory of your property and take care of any necessary maintenance. When guests come over, put your pet in another room for both his and your guests’ protection. If you are serving wine or spirits, be aware of how much your guests are drinking, and, of course, neither you nor your guest should ever drink and drive. Accidents do happen, so make sure your homeowners insurance is up to date and make sure you have an umbrella policy to protect your assets. Then take just a few common sense precautions, and you can keep the “happy” in the happy holidays for many years to come. From my family to yours and from all of us at Olan Law, happy holidays.

The meetings will be held before an audience of Malibu residents and University students. I will moderate the programs and we encourage your participation in what will be lively discussions of timely issues of today. I’ve collected his recordings since I was 15 years old and still marvel at his incredible artistry. As an adult, I traveled the NBA circuit for 10 years and caught his acts all over the country. Here in Los Angeles, I’ve come to know Kenny as a personal friend and have had the privilege of emceeing many of his concerts. I also had the honor of writing liner notes for his Concord CD, Blue Muse. I hope that you take this opportunity to meet a genuine icon, pick up an autographed photograph and hear the wisdom of this creative, accomplished, suave, Super Star of Jazz.

LAST CHANCE FOR ANIMALS TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF FIGHTING CRUELTY BY NINA KATE HAUPTMAN
PRISCILLA PRESLEY
WHEN ACTOR, AND LAST CHANCE FOR ANIMALS FOUNDER, CHRIS DEROSE
began protesting vivisection three decades ago, the term “animal rights” hadn’t yet reached the mainstream radar. And when he and his team broke into UCLA’s brain research lab in 1988 to film animal experiments, they shocked the world with never-before-seen images of traumatized cats with electrodes screwed to their skulls. Today, LCA has grown in numbers as well as sophistication, and goes undercover around the world to expose abuse, educate the public and change the policies that enable animal exploitation. On October 25, LCA will commemorate the past and look to the future with the 30th Anniversary Gala, to be held in Bel Air. With live entertainment, video presentations, an auction and vegan fare, the event promises to offer a festive vibe while tackling the serious topic of animal cruelty. Co-hosting the event is famed entrepreneur Bobi Leonard, a longtime Malibu resident and “three-peat” LCA gala host. Bobi is a revered name in interior design, real estate and skin care, and one of LCA’s many prominent Malibu supporters. Also co-hosting is Christopher Ameruoso, animal activist and celebrity photographer best known for his images of celebrities with their pets. Christopher recently teamed up with Priscilla Presley to create the bestselling photography book Shades of Elvis, a tribute to “the King.” Pop star Taylor Dayne will entertain the crowd, and Sam Simon of The Simpsons fame, as well as activist siblings Alexandra and Jonathan Paul, will accept awards for their contributions to animal causes. Alexandra is an actor with more than 70 credits, most notably the role of Lt. Stephanie Holden on Baywatch. Taking center stage at the gala will be LCA’s work to combat animal cruelty. Over the years, the group has fought to end suffering in research labs, puppy mills, fur farms, circuses, dogfighting rings and other exploitative industries. Helping bring abusers to justice, LCA investigations have led to numerous arrests as well as the first-ever felony conviction for pet theft. In that landmark case, an LCA operative named only as Pete helped bust an animal dealer who sold stolen dogs to labs for experimentation. Most recently, LCA infiltrated the Chinese dog and cat meat industry, helping shut down 33 meat vendors and a dog slaughterhouse. Investigators also went undercover onto rabbit farms in Spain and fox and raccoon farms in China, documenting systematic torture of animals raised for fur. In addition, LCA is campaigning the government of Nepal to stop the world’s largest animal sacrifice at the Hindu Gadhimai festival. Along with building awareness of animal-rights issues, LCA’s 30th Anniversary Gala will serve as a fundraiser to help the organization continue its work. It allows the client to look at up-to-theminute listings; showing if they are active, in escrow, how many days on the market etc.

I
WAS ALWAYS DRAWN TOWARD WOMEN AND FAMILY ISSUES. As soon
as my boys were old enough, and in high school, I started volunteering at the family services center for women and children. This community charitable organization helps empower women by teaching them how to get out of abusive situations and live independent and abuse free lives. One day, we, the officers of the organization, had to take part in a training session where we were shown how to spot signs of abuse and how to help women understand that it is abuse, and advise them how they can find help to get out of it and become independent. As part of that training we had to watch a video where a couple is at a party. They are talking to another couple. Everyone is drinking, laughing and having fun. The party ends and the first couple goes to their car. The man is driving. The woman is putting her lipstick on as she is still smiling and talking. All of a sudden, smack…. The man slapped the wife and changed the whole happy scene. He is yelling and the wife is bleeding in the lip, the lipstick is smudged across her face, she is in shock. As I was watching this movie on the screen, tears started running down my cheeks. I turned to the other counselor sitting next to me and I said to her, “I think I am living that life. I have been
through that many times.” She held my hand and told me she understands. She already suspected, from the kind of questions I was asking, that I was talking about myself. She could feel that I had first-hand experience of living with domestic abuse, but I had no Idea. I had never called my situation ‘Abuse’, even though I knew I wasn’t happy. I found out later that it is quite normal to do that. We often give small names to big situations so we can handle them. It was so ironic that I joined that group to help other women and I ended up becoming a ‘case’ they helped. They made me see that I was living with abuse. They made me realize that I deserved better and that I needed to do something about my situation. Once I was made aware, I could not hide it anymore. I knew now that how I was living was not normal. I needed to take care of my boys and myself. I could not accept the abuse any longer. I told my husband that I was going to leave unless he changed the situation at home. He did not think anything needed changing, and I left. It was hard but I had to do it. I had to leave, for my boys and for me. I could not accept anything less than to be happy and free. Since I left, I have found what freedom is. I finally live my life the way I want to. And I am happy! Now my mornings start with, what does Veera want to do? Then Veera does!! Life is good!
Empowered YOU!
