S AMERICANS, WE SEEM TO BE ESPECIALLy CONSCIENTIOuS WITH HEALTH AND WELLNESS ON MANy LEVELS – FROM THE PRESERVATION OF OuR PLANET TO OuR OVERALL PHySICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING. But here in Southern California fitness can be a downright obsession. With nearly 350 days a year of ample sunshine, we spend much of our time outdoors, affording us the opportunity to exercise in the fresh air and ideal climate. Consequently, we become more aware of the condition of our global community and are generally mindful of our physical shape (since we also tend to wear less clothing than our neighbors across the country). Whether outside or in, working out and staying fit is more often than not a high priority for Southlanders. That said, we thought it would be apropos to focus on workout options that can be incorporated into an ongoing fitness regimen or a tired routine. Many of us tend to practice a particular exercise program for so long that we “I SPENT My CHILDcan lose our verve and enthusiasm and simply go through the motions HOOD EATING. THE because we must. Therefore, outdoor trail and road group bike rides, boot ONLy ExERCISE I GOT camps and fitness getaways are a few of the possibilities we suggest to help WAS TRyING TO TWIST inject the spark back into a training schedule. This trendy recreation offers RICHARD SIMMONS a more glamorous approach to those who dislike traditional camping. We also cover a long list of coastal towns worth a visit, from San Diego to Ventura. And our cover celebrity, CANDACE CAMERON BuRE, who many have grown up watching on the hit TV show “Full House,” shares about her personal growth as well as her role in the upcoming Netflix series, “Fuller House.” We hope you enjoy our spring issue and we encourage you to linger outside and continue to do your best to stay healthy and live well!

THE INCOMPARABLE GOLDEN DOOR IN ESCONDIDO This is where it all started. Some 45 miles north of San Diego is the legendary Golden door, the first u.S. destination spa established in 1958 by Deborah Szekely, founder of the mind/body/fitness/wellness movement in California. Once the golden doors close behind you, you are immersed in 600 acres of unspoiled nature. Here you walk, hike, run, climb mountains, stroll through the bamboo forest, swim, play tennis and enjoy exquisite Japanese gardens and magnificent vistas as both mind and body renew. you can also pick your own vegetables and greens from the retreat's gardens and oranges fresh from the trees. Classes offer cardio, flexibility & motion, strengthen & sculpt, weight loss, fitness testing, hiking and outdoor adventure. To nourish the mind, meditation techniques teach you how to raise consciousness and focus upon your well being and that of others. And if you can't leave the golf clubs at home, Golden Door has an exclusive partnership with Pauma Valley Country Club for use of their Robert Trent Jones golf course. Facilities include a 2000-square-foot gym, two swimming pools, Watsu therapy pool, three exercise studios, state-of-the-art Pilates studio, spinning room, pool, tennis court and hilltop retreat for private sessions. Programs are designed for every skill level. Included in your stay is a daily in-room massage, five skincare or body treatments and a manicure/pedicure to balance the rigorous workouts. Maid service is provided five times daily. â?– www.goldendoor.com | 888.412.7944

Characterized by bell towers, rustic iron crosses and stucco exteriors, missions were built during the last part of the Spanish Expedition in what had been dubbed “Alta California” (the region that would later become known as Southern California) and were among the Spaniards’ last conquests in the new world. Commissioned by Catholic Padres and constructed by the Chumash Indians using adobe brick and other local materials, their sole purpose was to be used to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. The very first of the structures, Mission San Diego de Alcala, was established by Father “In 1833, a takeover Junipero Serra in 1769. by the Mexican govOver the next 54 years, ernment resulted in these religious outposts — the secularization of 21 in total — would spring the missions, ultiup along a route that mately landing them would be named “El in a state of ruin.” Camino Real” (“The Royal Highway”) that stretched from San Diego to San Francisco. Many years later in the 1920s the Auto Club of Southern California, eager Santa Barbara to boost tourism, installed cast-metal mission staff-and-bell markers (bearing “El Camino Real”) and trumped the path as the same one Catholic Priests had treaded nearly two centuries before. By the early 1960s, mission bells would be permanently installed along Highway 101 so tourists could follow the approximate route by automobile, of the missions’ original locales.

During their prime, missions were not only places of worship, they became the centers of their communities. Franciscan priests resided on the premises where they performed weekly services. Weddings, baptisms and funerals were also held there. The land that surrounded many of the missions was fertile, producing olive and citrus trees and a number of crops, including artichokes, wheat and grapes. In 1833, a takeover by the Mexican government resulted in the secularization of the missions, ultimately landing them in a state of ruin. Museum Director at Mission Santa Barbara, Kristina Foss, says, “The 1830s marked the beginning of the Ranchero period. Mexico was not in favor of the missions or the Catholic Church, so they confiscated them, as well as all of the land they were on, from the Spaniards. They were abandoned as churches altogether and used as makeshift ranch houses and cattle barns instead, which resulted in these structures falling into great disrepair. When the Americans arrived in California in 1849, they wanted to know why all of these churches were being used to house livestock.” ultimately, the land disputes were settled. President Abraham Lincoln would launch complete restoration of all missions and order that they be returned back to the Catholic Church, one by one; and although the damage to some of them would be near-irreparable, one remained intact. “The Santa Barbara Mission had been confiscated along with the others, but was the only one that was not abandoned during this period. It had become so important to the community and the people of Santa Barbara would not allow it to be used in any way other than a church; so Mission Santa Barbara remains the only one that has continually operated as a mission since 1786,” notes Foss. Today missions remain among the most-visited and beloved places in California. And while seven of the 21 are national landmarks, Foss says, “Not all of them have received landmark status yet, but there is no question that they’re historically and architecturally among the most unique and valuable contributions to our state. Each one of them plays an invaluable role in the story of American and California history.” ❖

GET OUT OF TOWN! ✒ BY ESTHER C. BLEUEL, MA, MFT, MDR
ANuARy IS OFTEN A TIME OF REVIEW, REFLECTION AND GOAL SETTING. By MARCH OR APRIL HOWEVER, MANy OF uS HAVE ALREADy ABANDONED OR SLIPPED FROM OuR OPTIMISTIC PLANS. If the pressure of daily life and work have dampened your resolve, enthusiasm or desire for positive change, and you feel burdened by stress, here’s a thought for how to get back on track. Take a little trip. Getting away or changing the scenery often provides a way to clear your head, to wipe the slate of goals and resolutions clean and start over. In any event, the objective is to create a life that is meaningful, fulfilling and joyful. Be clear about setting goals that you are willing and able to sustain. Travelling can be exciting, rejuvenating and restful. Escape from the familiar routines of daily life can ignite creativity, enable you to see your world “through different eyes,” and provide a fresh perspective. use the opportunity to identify the stressors in your life. Which ones can you change? What are your goals and resolutions? Are any causing anxiety? How about taking time to identify your three top priorities and why they are important to you. Do you want to change your job? Have you been thinking about returning to school? Are you in relationships that have become uncomfortable, distant or compromised? Be honest with yourself and realistic about your choices and commitment for making change happen. While you’re away, give yourself permission to do the things you love; things that make you smile. your head will clear and leave space for you to consider new priorities and choices. And, yes, ignore deadlines and paperwork. Be brave - take a day off from checking emails and texts and ignore the news. As you travel, focus on the present. Not the past or the future. Be aware of your surroundings. Seek out new experiences and chat with strangers. Treat yourself to your favorite foods. Think of your trip as a moving meditation. Keep a journal of some kind and write at least once each day. This will help you gain awareness and perspective of your decision to give yourself breathing room. Setting a few priorities and relegating some activities to the back burner will help you create a more balanced and harmonious life. Take time to imagine specifically how your day and your life will look when you actually remove some of the stress producing aspects. If they’re important, simply set them aside and deal with them later. And, the cherry on the cake: research has shown that a vacation (rest) can lead to the experience of fewer stressful days at least five weeks later. That means that even mini-vacations are the gift that keeps on giving. Be intentional about relieving the stress so that you enjoy and appreciate your life and the people around you. Check in with yourself every few months to stay on track. So, take advantage of the gift of travel and appreciate how it will improve your attitude, your energy and your mind. Bon voyage! ❖

ALIFORNIA IS uNDOuBTEDLy KNOWN FOR ITS CAR CuLTuRE. But, the Golden State is also synonymous with the proverbial road trip to one of 18 national forests or thousands of campgrounds in a Winnebago or station wagon. These days, camping, chronicled in beloved films such as The Great Outdoors, The Parent Trap, and The Long, Long Trailer, isn’t just about “roughing it” with a modest tent, portable cooktop, and ghost stories around a fire pit. Now, glamping, or “glamour camping” has become the new norm. “There are nine million RVs in the united States,” says Scott Cory of Ventura Ranch KOA. “There are more than 135 million households that do not own RVs. Glamping offers those millions of households without RVs a chance to enjoy the great outdoors. The popularity of glamping has risen by adding the creature comforts of home for these new campers, such as private bedrooms and bathrooms, and glamping makes it easy for the non-traditional camper to get away by just bringing their toothbrush.” From a coastal campground with fine linens and private porches, to a site lined with refurbished vintage travel trailers appointed with flat-screen TVs and outdoor fire pits, get ready to pack your bags and hit the road.

LMOST 650 CRAFT BREWERIES MAKE uP THE CALIFORNIA BEER LANDSCAPE. RANGING IN SIzE FROM THE MASSIVE OPERATIONS AT CHICO’S SIERRA NEVADA AND STONE BREWING IN ESCONDIDO TO SMALLER OPERATIONS LIKE HESS BREWING IN SAN DIEGO, THE OPPORTuNITIES TO TASTE SOME OF AMERICA’S FINEST CRAFT BEER ARE PLENTy. AND THOSE OPPORTuNITIES ARE ONLy GROWING. With the passing of Assembly Bill 774, any brewery without major distribution is allowed the opportunity to sample and sell its beers outside their brewery, and it starts at farmers markets across the Golden State. The bill, authored by Assembly Member Marc Levine (D-San Rafael), was signed by Governor Jerry Brown in July of last year. The bill is a major victory for the growing number of smaller California breweries who wish to reach a wider market share. “It gives [breweries] the right to go out and offer their products to a different consumer base,” says Kevin Hopkins, the chief branding officer at Mother Earth Brew Company in Vista. “While it impacts every craft brewery, in reality it’s designed for the smallest breweries who don’t have major distribution.” Hopkins says a main beneficiary of AB 774 are the nano-breweries, who by definition, sell less than 3,000 barrels of beer a year. “[AB 774 allows them] access to market opportunities they might not get otherwise,” added Hopkins, also the president of the San Diego Brewers Guild. CRAFT BEERS
The passing of the bill allows for craft breweries to offer educational tastings to consumers while they purchase other goods typically available at farmers markets from avocado to alfalfa, tomatoes to tamales. Quite literally, farmers markets have allowed consumers to put a face to the products they purchase and consume. This, too, is important with beer.
California’s craft beer industry contributed $6.5 billion to the state of California’s economy in 2014. “With everything we’re seeing in the beer industry, mergers and acquisitions, the industry becomes more diluted,” Hopkins says. “To be able to put a face to the product, you realize this guy is brewing right down the street, you should get his product. These guys are brewing out of passion.” “People love the local feel,” says Hopkins. “They want to buy local, support local, and in a way support themselves by buying into the local economy.” “Craft breweries create local jobs and keep money in local communities, which I like to support,” says Clay Spiegel, a Temecula resident. “I wholeheartedly support legislation that creates jobs and helps keep money in local communities. If people are going to drink beer no matter what, and they will, then lets help them find the local providers.” Local farms and markets have established themselves once again as cornerstones of our communities, and Spiegel, 34, despite initial misgivings, believes that California brewers and breweries deserve to be held in the same esteem and regard as farmers and their lineup of fruits or vegetables or flowers. “I initially wondered, ‘Do we want to encourage more drinking? Do we want to add alcohol to an event that is assumed to be free of alcohol for those that like to avoid it?” says Spiegel, whose local farmers market is the one in Old Town Temecula. “Being alcohol, it needs to be regulated and
44
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIFE - MAR.APR2016
people need to be taught not just about the product but how to be responsible. Giving small tastings is a great way to teach about both things, and educate people that there are options to the big, highly-marketed, foreign-owned beer producers.” “A lot of breweries are using local ingredients and this seems to fit the farmers market picture. I think we as communities should embrace all small business and those businesses should in turn support their community. Breweries should be included as any small business is.” California’s craft beer industry contributed $6.5 billion to the State of California’s economy in 2014. That beer will be available for samples, purchase, and off-site consumption at certified regional farmers markets makes the difficult task of choosing a beverage on a crowded shelf somewhat easier. Familiarity, both with the product and producer, creates a healthy, symbiotic relationship between breweries and consumers. Prior to AB 774, only wine was available to tasting and purchase at farmers markets. Breweries will have to do their due diligence in obtaining a license from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, a licensure fee, and the requisite training, and other specific conditions. ❖

laguna Beach is busy but always pretty. How the ocean retains its lovely azure color in such a high-traffic area is mind-boggling. But a trip to Southern California’s coastal cities would not be complete without a visit to this vibrant beach town. Visit Treasure Island Park and gaze upon turquoise water so exquisite that the Caribbean and Hawaiian tourism boards will wish you hadn’t. Peruse the many shops and art galleries that dot Pacific Coast Highway. The centerpiece of West Coast art since the turn of the 20th century, the Laguna Art Museum focuses on the art of California. The Pageant of the Masters is a summer event known for its tableaux vivants, or ‘living pictures,’ in which real people don costumes and apply makeup to recreate classical and contemporary works of art. To escape the crowds, drive Highway 1 to look for secluded coves and beaches, like Woods Cove, where you just might have a tiny patch of golden sand to yourself. soCal life: What are your thoughts on the chefs and some of your favorite restaurants in SoCal? gail simmons: “Well, there are so many great, smart, and young chefs. As far as restaurants, some of the ones I like are Alimento (Italian, Los Angeles), Night + Market (Thai, West Hollywood), Juniper & Ivy (American, San Diego), the Workshop Kitchen + Bar (American, Palm Springs), and Playa Provisions (American, Playa Del Rey).” soCal life: It's said that what separates Southern

California from other places is the food diversity factor. Do you agree? gail simmons: “Absolutely. There is a sheer diversity, quality, and excitement about the Farmers Market in Santa Monica [for instance] where you can buy 12 different types of artichokes.” soCal life: Would you ever consider opening a
restaurant of your own? “No, because I spend most of my time coaching and supporting. Running a restaurant is incredibly hard work that requires every ounce of your being [I can't rely solely on reputation], and I just don't have the time, though I may invest in a chef and give him or her my support.”

soCal life: When you're critiquing food, what is

the first test that the food has to pass when you sample it? gail simmons: “The number-one thing is that it has to be absolutely delicious. It has to also look beautiful, creative, and interesting, and be made with care, thoughtfulness, and great technique.”

soCal life: What do you say to those who contend that food, perhaps like art, is subjective and thus cannot be judged by a critic? gail simmons: “First, food isn't subjective. Everyone has likes and dislikes [with regard to preference], but to be able to understand if food is made well or not is a different matter. For example, knowing if a piece of meat is cooked right, or if vegetables are cooked with the right spices is like a science actually. One needs to understand the difference between subjective input and objective qualities about great food.”
soCal life: There are so many food shows these days – the best of the best, the best of the worst, and so on. Do you see the food-show craze lasting? Has “Top Chef” been a big influence on it all? gail simmons: “I don't see it ever going anywhere because food is not a craze. Food is the greatest pleasure and it's necessary for survival. And the concept of food will get bigger and bigger because it's diverse. And yes, “Top Chef” has played an enormous role in reaching broad audiences and inspiring them to cook.” soCal life: Because you are filmed while critiquing food, do you ever find yourself being self-aware about your facial expressions, or playing to the camera even if you don't mean to? gail simmons: “The show has to be interesting, but that comes in post-production when 17 hours of filming [for one episode] is whittled down to 45 minutes. I feel like my reactions are always productive and authentic since it's about the real life of the restaurant world.” H

Grilled Fish Tacos with Blood Orange & CitrusTomatillo Salsa BY GAIL SIMMONS Makes 8 tacos
For Citrus-tomatillo salsa: • • • • • • • • •
1/2 pound tomatillos, husked and halved 1 jalapeño, halved and seeded 1/2 onion, sliced 1/2 inch thick 1 garlic clove, peeled 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Kosher salt 2 tablespoons cilantro leaves 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice Salt and freshly ground pepper
Grilled Fish Tacos with Blood Orange & CitrusTomatillo Salsa
Preheat a grill pan. In a bowl, toss the tomatillos, jalapeños, onion and garlic with 1 tablespoon of the oil and season with a big pinch of salt. Grill over high heat, turning occasionally, until the vegetables are slightly softened and charred in spots, about 5 minutes. Let cool slightly, then transfer to a food processor. Pulse until coarsely chopped. Add the cilantro, lime juice and remaining tablespoon of oil and pulse until chunky. Allow to cool to room temperature. Season with salt and pepper.
For the grilled Fish tacos: • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 2 limes, 1 zested and juiced, 1 cut into eight pieces lengthwise • 3 blood oranges, one zested and juiced, two peeled and segmented • 1 tablespoon finely chopped cilantro, plus more for garnish • 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallot • 1 pound skinless halibut, sea bass or striped bass fillets • Kosher salt • 8 corn tortillas • 1 avocado, halved, pitted, peeled and thinly sliced • 4 radishes, halved if large, thinly sliced • Citrus-Tomatillo Salsa (recipe above) In a shallow bowl, combine oil, lime zest and juice, orange zest and juice, cilantro and shallot. Season with a big pinch of salt. Add fish; turn to coat and let stand 15 minutes at room temperature. Preheat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Remove fish from marinade and gently pat off excess liquid. Grill, fleshside down, then turn and cook through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer fish to a plate; let rest 5 minutes, then flake with fork. Meanwhile, grill tortillas 10 to 15 seconds per side. Divide radishes between tortillas then top with flaked fish; garnish with avocado, blood orange segments and citrus-tomatillo salsa. Serve with cilantro leaves and lime wedges, plus more salsa on the side if desired.
soCal life: What's the average
day for you like when you're not filming? gail simmons: “Everyday is a little different. I'll have breakfast, work on other projects, shoot morning TV. I'll also eat out two or three times a week for work.” soCal life: Do you have specific dietary habits? Guilty pleasures? gail simmons: “I try to eat simply and in moderation. I love whole grains, vegetarian soups, and stews. Just simple, clean food. As for guilty pleasures, I love spicy chicken wings, salt and vinegar chips, and chocolate chip ice cream – I'm just like most people in that way (laughs).”
soCal life: Lastly, do you take pride in being an empowered female in the food industry? gail simmons: “yes. The women are very underrepresented in the industry and they just want to be treated equally and [for instance] be called chefs as opposed to women chefs. We need to keep promoting women, encouraging them, and providing benefits and supporting them, like during maternity leave. It's an industry that has a way to go, but I'm proud to represent and do my best.” ❖
soCal life: Fast food?
“I don't really eat fast food, but the last time I had it was In-N-Out Burger.”
gail simmons:
Salsa can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days.

COVER STORY
CandaCe CaMerOn Bure’s reprisal of her character D.J. Tanner on “Fuller House” is proof that some people can go home again. “I don’t know how that works for everybody, but we certainly have gone home,” Bure says. “It’s even better the second time around.” Home is the popular 80s -90s TV show “Full House” where she spent ages 10-18 growing up, becoming an actress and a young lady. She began acting along with her older brother Kirk because a neighbor suggested to her parents that they had cute kids. Bure was barely five when she shot her first commercial for Mutual of Omaha Insurance, which never aired. While acting started out as an extra-curricular activity, at about age 15, as she entered high school - doing a combination of set schooling and public school - she became serious about it as a career. While thinking about her future, the positive experience of “Full House” played a large part in her decisionmaking. “We all know that there are lots of stories out there about kids who grew up in the business that didn’t love it and it didn’t work out well for them,” Bure says. “I genuinely had a wonderful experience.” She managed to escape the cliché Hollywood child star nightmare she says, due to several factors. “I have great parents and I had really great people around me,” Bure says. “And I think just my God-given personality. I was always very mature for my age.” So much so, that Bure mentions she met her husband, then NHL hockey player, Valeri Bure, when she was 18 and married him two years later. “We had a very long courtship over the phone for four or five months after our initial meeting,” Bure says. “We actually got to know each other very well by phone, which takes a whole element out of a relationship and lets you get to know a person’s heart and brain.” She says he was mature as well because he had grown up as a professional athlete. “There was a lot in common and neither of us were really wanting to go the traditional route of feeling the need to party or had the fear of missing out on things,” she explains. “We kind of had already become adults by the time we were 18 and 19 with jobs, paying taxes and living life.” By the time she was 22, she had the first of her three children, now ages 17, 16 and 14. Motherhood changed her life radically. She decided to stay home and raise her children while her husband was traveling, playing hockey. “I decided not to work for about 10 years and this was the first time in my life where I wasn’t working, so my identity was very different, having my identity a lot wrapped up in my work and now becoming a mom,” Bure says. It took a couple of years to adjust.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIFE - MAR.APR2016
“Being a mom is one of the greatest things in life for me and I’m glad I chose to do everything I did and take time off and not work and just be there for my kids,” Bure says. “It certainly grows you in character and in patience and gives you a whole different perspective on life.” Bure returned to work in 2008 and began her association with the Hallmark Channel a couple of years after her husband retired. Her first project with them was “Moonlight & Mistletoe,” followed by many more through the years. “They’re all feel-good, family friendly movies, which is very important to me,” Bure says. She is also proud of the fact that she has produced films and written three books -“Reshaping it All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness,” “Balancing it All: My Story of Juggling Priorities and Purpose” and “Dancing Through Life: Steps of Courage and Conviction.” Her current pleasurable challenge is as co-host on “The View.” “There’s so much to learn here,” Bure says. “It’s a forum I’ve not been in. I’ve been on the receiving end as an actress being interviewed. And being on a show that is very politically driven and having an opinion about these hot topics and learning to give my opinion within a 30 second sound bite is a challenge. The challenge itself is what drives me to continue to do more things,” says Bure, adding that one day she would like to have her own network. Bure’s co-hosting duties began last summer during weeks off while shooting “Fuller House” in which her character D.J. is now a widow raising three children. She is alongside original cast members Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie, her younger sister) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler, her best friend) with sporadic visits from some of the other original actors such as Bob Saget (Danny), John Stamos (Jesse) and Dave Coulier (Joey). “The excitement level has been brewing for many years, not only from the fans of the show for this kind of show to come back, but because there is such a genuinely great relationship between the cast and the original producers,” Bure says. “It is the best wish that has come true.” Having the opportunity to play D.J., who defined her childhood, has been an amazing experience for her. “To see her as an adult, and as an actress get to play with the character that I want her to be, along with the producer’s vision, has been great,” Bure says. “She was such a positive, happy character, so to see her as an adult who still holds many of those qualities and is such a loving mom, is wonderful.” She promises this will not be a reboot of an old show. “We are hoping that there will be a new audience and new generation who will grow up with this show,” Bure says. “This is a brand new show that we’re familiar with. There are lots of new characters that we’re going to get to see grow up in front of our eyes.” ❖

The Spanish Era began November 1, 1776 when Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded by Padre Junipero Serra, became the seventh of California's 21 Spanish missions. under its rule, nearly a thousand Acjachemens, renamed Juaneños by the Spaniards, built the mission and worked with the settlers to create a thriving agricultural economy. By the early 1900s, the dominance of Spain and Mexico were gone and the population had melded into a tight community of farmers and merchants developing a highly important agricultural center serviced by the railroad. The mission, however, fell into disrepair until 1910 when Father John O'Sullivan arrived and restoration began. Mary Pickford married there in 1937, but it was in 1939 that NBC's live radio broadcast first spread the story of the swallows across the nation. San Juan Capistrano quickly became a destination model for early California life, attracting Hollywood, locals, busses of school kids and tourists from the world over. Today, the "Jewel of the Missions" is and one of California's most important historical, cultural, and educational centers.

The mission, historical district of Los Rios and downtown are within walking distance of the railroad depot. The oldest neighborhood in California, Los Rios still has three original adobes from the mission days. Walking these streets with bougainvillea, wildflowers and cacti surrounding the plain buildings takes you back into a simple time when you felt the warmth of the sun dancing through the willows, listened to the sounds of birds, breathed in the eucalyptus, and actually engaged in faceto-face conversation. Much of downtown has been refurbished and lined with shops including Antique Row, lots of dining options, refreshment stops and a cou-

ple of wineries including the family-owned Rancho Capistrano just a block from the mission. Here you'll find some 50 handcrafted wines from grapes gathered from around the world which can be enjoyed in various indoor and outdoor settings and accompanied by small food plates and their signature pizza. The train depot, where you buy your tickets in an old railroad car, is flanked by Sarducci's Capistrano Depot which, after a remodeling within historic guidelines, will become Trevor's At The Tracks. Nearby are the petting zoo, Hummingbird Cottage and Lemon Drop Gove for gifts, Ramos House

Just off the coast of Ventura is Channel Islands National Park, one of our richest, rarest national treasures. Known as America's Galapagos, the park's five islands — Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara — are treasure troves of history, recreation and some 2,000 diverse animal and plant species, 145 of which exist nowhere else in the world.
Home to the Chumash Indians for thousands of centuries, approximately 148 village sites have been found, including 11 on Santa Cruz, eight on Santa Rosa, and two on San Miguel. The earliest human remains recorded in North or South America — two leg bones of the Arlington Springs Man who lived there 13,000 years ago — were found in the late 1950s on Santa Rosa. The park also has more endangered animal and plant species than any other in the National Park Service system. The very survival of these plants and animals depends entirely on our ability to protect and maintain their habitats. This includes stabilizing cultural sites; removal of non-native plants and animals; recovery of the H

island foxes; re-establishment of bald eagles; and restoration of wetlands. anacapa, the nearest island, is popular for its half and full-day trips. The east and west sides of the island are accessible to each other only by boat. Waves have carved the volcanic island into towering cliffs, sea caves, and natural bridges including the 40-foot-high Arch Rock symbolizing the island and park. Most visitors explore the 5 east side where seabirds and thousands of others reside along with the largest breeding colonies of endangered California brown pelicans and western gulls in the world. Another popular island for full day trips is santa Cruz, where millions of years of isolation have resulted in distinctive plants and animal species not found anywhere else in the world. At 96 square miles, it is the largest island in California with three mountain ranges, deep canyons, and 77 miles of craggy coastline cliffs, giant sea caves, tide pools and lots of beaches. It is home to 140 land birds and 11 land mammal species; amphibian reptile species; large colonies of nesting sea birds, breeding seals, sea lions and other marine life. Traces of ranching in the 1800s and 1900s are evidenced by the remnants of adobe houses, barns, shops, wineries, and a chapel. santa rosa, the second largest island in California and home to the Chumash until 1820, contains thousands of archeological sites. European explorers, Aleut sea otter hunters, Chinese abalone fishermen, Spanish missionaries, Mexican and American ranchers, and the u.S. military all have left their marks here. Remnants of fishing camps, water troughs, buildings and equipment of the historic Vail and Vickers ranch, and military installations still remain. Its typography supports about 500 plant species including six found only on Santa Rosa. santa Barbara, smallest of the Channel Islands at one square mile, may look a bit barren but is actually inhabited by elephant seals, yellow flowers, and its own rich cultural past. Plant and wildlife are also returning after years of ranching and farming. This recovery of native vegetation and removal of non-native animals and plants has aided in the restoration. Today there are 14 land birds nesting including the horned lark, orange-crowned warbler, and house finch which are found only on Santa Barbara Island. Seabird colonies are also benefitting with 11 nesting species so far. The rocky shores also provide resting and breeding areas for California sea lions, harbor seals, and northern elephant seals. san Miguel island, westernmost of California's Channel Islands, regularly hosts scientists coming to study aquatic carnivorous mammals and oversee the island fox captive breeding program. The National Park Service also maintains two airstrips, ranger and research stations. Wind and weather constantly batter the island which is 8 still recovering from a century of sheep farming. To even begin to appreciate what you are about to see, it is highly recommended that you first do your homework. While camping is permitted, most visitors take day trips with boating adventure companies like Island Packers (www.islandpackers.com | 805.642.1393) to explore one of the islands with a naturalist, enjoy the beaches, kayaking, snorkeling and other optional activities. Depending upon the time of year, you may also see dolphins at play or Blue and Humpback whales breaching. To learn more, visit www.nps.gov/chis/learn/index.htm | 805.658.5730 where you can view island webcams, virtual tours, and more. “it’s worth noting that studies show that 80 percent of vegetarians are women.” would be a good reason to consider going back to eating meat. And it goes beyond simply not eating meat. I’ve learned that the term “vegetarian” doesn’t cover it anymore. As happens with any fad, those involved not only have disdain for “nonmembers,” but are also continually trying to one up their own by creating new epicurean subcultures — each more exotic, stricter and more difficult to follow — that prove they have a greater love for animals, people and the planet in general. Such categories include, but are in no way limited to… Vegan: No animal products or byproducts. (What are byproducts?) No meat of any kind, no eggs, no dairy. No honey. And many won’t use animal products, including leather, wool or silk. laCto Vegetarian: Similar to vegans, but will eat dairy products and are open on the controversial wool issue. oVo Vegetarian: Very similar to lacto vegetarians, but they shy away from dairy products, except for eggs, which they simply can’t give up. laCto-oVo Vegetarian: The lacto-ovo vegetarian will avoid any meats, but is happy to chow down on an egg or drink a glass of milk. pollotarian: Avoids red meat and seafood, but is happy to barbecue up a chicken or enjoy a duck à l’orange. pesCatarian: Similar to a pollatarian, and is considered by many to be “semi-vegetarian.” They also avoid red meat, but trade poultry for seafood. Often huge fans of shrimp. Flexitarian: Tries to eat their veggies as often as possible, but is happy to also have meat. Not sure why this one needs a category. Actually, I’m not sure why any of them need a category. People should eat what they want, as their health and personal preferences dictate. It is beyond me how not eating trout has become a badge of honor, but, as the comedian Ron White said, “I did not climb to the top of the @#*^! food chain to eat carrots.” And finally, for the love of Pete, what the heck is a “gluten,” and why are so many people so worried about them being freed? ❖

HE NuMBER OF VEGETARIANS IN THIS COuNTRy HAS GROWN TO ALMOST 20 MILLION PEOPLE, WHICH MEANS THAT MORE THAN FIVE TIMES AS MANy PEOPLE IDENTIFy THEMSELVES AS VEGETARIANS NOW THAN DID ONLy FIVE yEARS AGO. AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT AT LEAST 19 MILLION OF THEM LIVE IN SOuTHERN CALIFORNIA AND ENJOy NOTHING MORE THAN TALKING ABOuT THEIR VARIOuS FOOD CHOICES AT THE ExACT MOMENT THAT I AM TAKING A BITE OF A GOOD, JuICy STEAK. I’ve never smoked, but I’m beginning to understand the feeling of persecution that smokers have long experienced. There are already a huge number of vegetarian restaurants in SoCal, and I figure it’s only a matter of time before mainstream restaurants have a special “meat eaters” section, like those glass enclosed lounges at the airport for smokers. They’ll probably be identified with a picture of a Neanderthal hanging over the designated tables. It’s worth noting that studies show that 80 percent of vegetarians are women. Guys still seem to enjoy a good burger. And, if you follow the news, not eating meat is huge among celebrities and getting bigger. Candidly, if I were a vegetarian, knowing that the practice has taken off with the leaders of our pop culture

My Southern California
THE CATALINA CASINO, SANTA CATALINA ISLAND BY CHRIS SILVESTER, OJAI, CA

is photographing anything that involves water, both the creatures that play in it, and the people who play on it. For the past several years I have had the opportunity to be the photographer for the Southern California Outrigger Racing Association, and it's a perfect fit for me. Following both the summer and winter racing series allows me to spend a great deal of time out on the ocean capturing the excitement of the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe racing culture right here in my own back yard. I also enjoy photographing surfing, stand up paddle boarding, rowing, (and basically any of the other sports my son does on the water). Even though I am a carpenter by trade and photography is just a weekend hobby for me, being able to share my photos with so many people is something I truly love to do, and it is my hope to create lasting memories and a window for people to view adventures gone by.
While people around the world may only associate Southern California with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or the laid back attitude of sunny San Diego, So Cal has so much more to offer. Just outside of its celebrated urban centers, it is a rugged place, a place of extremes, with hot red rock deserts, cold-water pacific islands with wild kelp beds, and snow capped mountain peaks. At least, that’s how I see Southern California. How do you see it? We want to know! We at Southern California Life magazine are devoted to showing you all that it has to offer. We’ll close each issue showcasing the beauty of our region, with its landscapes, and landmarks. And we want you, our readers to participate. For a chance to be published on our “My Southern California” photo page, follow us on Instagram (@socallifemag) and use these hashtags in your favorite photos of the landscapes, landmarks, and lifestyles that you think define our home: #ThisIsMySoCal #Socallifemagcontest.
