It was a sad way to go off after all those years.” The up side was it was the first time since she was a teenager that she had time off. LaRue began in the business sporadically, even earlier than her teens, doing commercials and singing jingles. At 7 years of age, she sang an A&W Root Beer jingle and a couple of years later, she sang one in English and Spanish for Del Monte, as well as acted in a Del Monte green bean commercial. Her first big break was daytime TV’s “Santa Barbara,” followed by “All My Children,” which forced the California girl to the Big Apple in 1993. “It was a huge culture shock because I grew up in Norco, California which is such a cow town,” she says with a laugh. “But the perfect time to live in New York is your 20s and early 30s, so it was awesome -- the theater, the culture, the food, the people.” After “All My Children” and on the heels of a divorce, LaRue returned to Los Angeles in 2005 to be with family. A month later, she landed “CSI Miami” and worked as a single mom for the next six years until her marriage to businessman Joe Cappuccio three years ago. continued >>

“Some guy said to me, ‘Don't you think you're too old to sing rock n' roll?’ I said, ‘You'd better check with Mick Jagger.’” ~ Cher
W W W.W E S T L A K E M A G A Z I N E . C O M
HERE’S NOTHING LIKE A GOOD OLD ROCK SONG TO TAKE ME BACK TO A SIGNIFICANT TIME IN MY PAST, WHETHER GOOD OR … NOT SO GOOD. I can chronicle my entire lifetime with the music and lyrics that have marked specific milestones for me. At the hint of a particularly special song, that space in my history comes flashing before me instantly. I’m sure this phenomenon resonates with many of you. Rock and Roll, although it has undergone a metamorphosis many times over the past few decades, has been an important element in the lives of most people and the multi-billion dollar revenues it generates can prove it. Besides providing an enjoyable listening experience, songs evoke emotions and they can inspire action. The brilliant artists who write, perform and blend those beautiful melodies with powerful lyrics can so impact our lives, they become our idols, legends and rock stars. Some of the musical masterminds who have been particularly influential in my life are featured in this, our 21st Anniversary Issue of Westlake Magazine. And interestingly, most of them live right here in our local community. Our kids have gone to school together, we shop at the same stores and we eat at the same restaurants. Although they are superstars in the music business, they are normal people just like you and me … but they’re blessed with a distinctive gift. As you’ll discover in most every story, these musical artists are each passionate about their careers and are grateful to have had the opportunity to live their dreams. Although many have achieved worldwide fame, the level of humbleness they exhibited during their respective interviews is heartwarming. They nearly all express a sentiment that they still can’t believe they get to do what they love and that so many of us actually love what they do. Had I been slightly more self-absorbed, I would have liked to share with certain artists how their songs have affected me, but I’m sure they’ve heard similar stories countless times and frankly could do without accounts of my personal drama. But I, however, was intensely interested in reading all about them! I promise you will be inspired and amazed as you learn about the musicians who have serenaded you in the past and continue to entertain you today. Each story is unique and inspirational. And stay on the lookout, because your favorite rockers just might live down the street from you.

T IS SAID THAT MUSIC HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE FOR AT LEAST 50,000 YEARS WHILE CONTINUALLY EVOLVING INTO A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF HUMAN LIFE. For most, music is a form of emotional expression. Over the generations, countless musical artist ranging from Elvis Presley and the Beatles to Lionel Richie, Bon Jovi, Madonna and Taylor Swift, to name a few, have influenced everything from politics, fashion, technology and all aspects of American culture through sheer freedom of expression. It has been 44 years since Woodstock, an era when a number of legendary bands launched and began making history. Over the years, rock ‘n’ roll, country, Motown, R&B, jazz, punk, rap, hip-hop and a plethora of musical styles and artistic influences has helped to shape a nation while bridging the gap between cultural differences. In this special “Music” issue, Westlake Magazine is pleased to showcase a number of musical legends who have not only made their home here in our gold coast region but have clearly staked a claim in most of our lives with the songs they wrote, the melodies they produced and the passion they ignited. Prepare to turn back the hands of time and enjoy a walk down memory lane as you flip through the pages of our 21st Anniversary Issue featuring some of your favorite musical artists. On our front cover, American country music singer, songwriter, actor and philanthropist Billy Ray Cyrus shares his life and past aspirations with us. Cyrus continues to be one of the most progressive and evolving artist of our day. Featured on our special fold-out cover and inside this issue are local music legends such as Eddie Money, Kenny Loggins, Rick Springfield, Ted Nugent, Cher, Travis Barker, Kevin Cronin, Terri Nunn, Gino Vanelli, Tommy Thayer, Rick Allen and more. Additionally, we are honored to have the opportunity to support National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October by paying tribute to individuals who have fought the battle and those around them who have provided solid foundations of support. The lovely actress, Eva La Rue graces our back cover and shares why she became the spokesperson for Beckstrand Cancer Foundation. These warriors, alongside those commemorating the 12th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in remembrance of the lives lost, collectively represent a guiding force of hope in that by joining hands and hearts there can be triumph over tragedy. Next month, we invite you to join us for our 21st Anniversary celebration featuring a luxury car show and food and wine tasting including special musical guests. For more details visit our website at: www.westlakemagazine.com or follow us on Facebook.

NEW WORLD TRADE CENTER UNDER CONSTRUCTION: THE MARK OF A NEW DAY FOR THE NATION AFTER

HE OPENING OF THE NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL MARKED THE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF A DAY THAT WILL BE FOREVER ETCHED IN THE MINDS OF ALL AMERICANS. Within the past decade Lower Manhattan as well as the nation has experienced a revival of spirits and the new World Trade Center will be a symbol of that honor and strength. The memorial is currently under construction and is set for completion in 2015. This massive undertaking will be comprised of all the Trade Center buildings adjacent to the Twin Towers that were either damaged or destroyed in the attack. There will be a museum to accompany the finished memorial, a Transportation Hub, 550,000 square feet of retail space and a performing arts center. The architectural design and artistry of these structures, finished and unfinished, are garnering worldwide praise. The 9/11 Memorial, built by American architect Michael Arad, provides a space of solitude amidst the bustling city. Surrounded by a forest of trees, two reflecting pools sit in place of the Twin Towers, engraved with the names of those lost in the Twin Towers attack, Virginia, Pennsylvania, as well as the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The accompanying museum, which will contain both artifacts and personal stories from September 11th, is set for completion this year. Until the official museum’s opening, the recently-unveiled George W. Bush Presidential Library on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, currently features a 9/11 exhibit and also contains a permanent artifact, a large piece of metal that once supported the Twin Towers that was uncovered at Ground Zero. Tributes such as this new World Trade Center provide a tangible source of remembrance for generations to come and offer a symbol of the recovery our nation has experienced since that fateful day in 2001.

Grab Your Gum. Several studies, including one by researchers at Cardiff University in Wales, find that chewing gum while studying actually increases alertness, improves productivity and actually lowers stress levels. In many instances, students who chew gum display reduced anxiety and quicker reaction times. This is because the act of chewing actually causes a temporary increase in arousal, which leads to increases in heart rate, blood pressure and blood flow. Whether you prefer Extra, Trident or Bubblicious, students should consider a trip to their local bodega before hunkering down to study.

Students should consider curbing their use of mobile devices, tablets and computers to access social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter) that may be disruptive to the studying process, but should leverage these same technologies to access study tools that make the process much easier, more engaging and more effective. McGraw-Hill LearnSmart™, for example, is an adaptive “digital tutor” that continuously assesses students’ knowledge and skills and provides personalized recommendations that help them master content over time. By helping students focus their study time on learning what they don’t know and less on what they already know, LearnSmart turns C students into B students and B students into A students. According to a recent survey, more than 95 percent of students using LearnSmart say that it has improved the effectiveness of their study time in mastering course material.

Use Mnemonic Devices. According to an associate psychology professor at Howard University, making personal connections to course material can help students retain and recall information. Also known as “mnemonic devices,” students who develop acronyms, rhymes, visuals or other shortcuts while studying are actually helping their brain better file and encode relevant information. Arguably, mnemonic devices may take a bit more time and creativity; however, students who use more innovative study methods oftentimes outperform their peers who opt for more of a conventional study path.

Stay Physically Active. Add exercise to your study routine - Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive correlation between exercise and improved brain function. Many of us, however, neglect our exercise routines during periods of intense studying and stress. This is a big mistake because exercise helps push more oxygen and glucose (sugar) to your brain and provides the high-octane fuel your brain needs to perform its best. Just make sure you pick the right type of exercise - exercise that gets your heart pumping but doesn't overly tax your muscles (i.e., aerobic vs. anaerobic) is best because your brain doesn't have to share as much fuel with other muscles. Walking or lightly jogging is better for your brain function than sprinting or lifting weights.

Eat Well. It should come as no surprise that food is one of the most important elements in maintaining our overall physical wellbeing, including energy levels and brain function. Though the stress of studying may prompt students to reach for unhealthy, sleep-inducing comfort foods like pizza and fried chicken, research shows that there are many delicious foods and beverages that can actually improve the way we think and work. Dark chocolate, for example, is chock-full of antioxidant properties and contains natural stimulants that produce endorphins while enhancing focus and concentration. Berries of all kind – also rich in antioxidants – are known to improve memory and motor coordination, as are the properties found in coffee. Students should consider the benefits of these “power foods” before settling for unhealthier indulgences to get them through finals.

TED NUGENT SAYS HIS APPEARANCE AT THE CANYON CLUB LAST JULY WAS MEMORABLE NOT JUST BECAUSE “EACH NIGHT (ON STAGE) IS A MUSICIAN’S DREAM,” BUT BECAUSE “THE SOUND AT THE CANYON CLUB IS PERFECT FROM THE STAGE. SO MUCH SONIC BOMBAST IS INSPIRED FROM THE SOUND AND TONE ALONE. “THE FACT THAT WORLD CLASS VIRTUOSOS TOMMY CLUFETOS AND DAVE AMATO JOINED US ON STAGE SET IT OVER THE TOP, AND WE CLEARLY CREATED A NIGHT NO ONE WILL EVER FORGET.”
Westlake Magazine had an opportunity to ask him a few questions for our anniversary issue and as usual, Nugent was none too shy with his answers: Q: You have become a very controversial figure -- I would say you are a magnet to controversy, but I am wondering, do you seek it because you are just so passionate about so many controversial topics? A: I have been certain for a very long time, that as Americans, our most important duty is to speak up, ask questions, demand accountability and spotlight cockroaches at every opportunity. I seek no controversy and am indeed heartbroken that common sense, truth and logic creates controversy. I want to admire my president and government representatives, but the runaway fraud, deceit, racism, corruption, abuse of power and out and out criminality by my government must be addressed, exposed and rectified. I raise hell because a soldier died for my right to do so. Being the hopeless optimist and believer in the indefatigable American spirit, I hope, pray and believe that we will pull ourselves up out of this embarrassing suicidal lowest
of lows where so many Americans live to take, instead of give. I see guilt catching up with the bloodsuckers and America returning to being the best that we can be and out-producing the rest of the world again. Q: What’s next for you? A: The band and I are dying to record a bunch of very exciting songs and musical adventures. Logistics, timing and scheduling coordinated availabilities is a Herculean task. With any luck we should hit the studio in early 2014 for a summer release of a killer CD. Q: It's been suggested that you run for president, any thoughts? A: I’m so wreak of logic and common sense that it is very refreshing in this world of otherwise soulless, politically correct denial and dishonesty. God knows, America would be the greatest again if she operated like the Nugent family. No takers, no whiners, no gangsters, no dopers, no drunks, no criminals, no bloodsuckers, no excuse makers, no crybabies, no punks, no Obama supporters.

WHAT CAN BE SAID ABOUT CHER THAT ISN’T ALREADY KNOWN? SHE’S ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING MUSIC ARTISTS OF ALL TIME, AN ACADEMY AWARDWINNING ACTRESS, A PASSIONATE POLITICAL ACTIVIST AND A DEDICATED PHILANTHROPIST. WITH A CAREER SPANNING SIX DECADES, THE “GODDESS OF POP” NEVER CEASES TO RE-INVENT HERSELF, CONSISTENTLY GRABBING THE PUBLIC’S ATTENTION AND THE TOP SPOTS ON THE MUSIC CHARTS. Cher epitomizes the essence of a superstar with her wide range of talents and most recently, a new hit single, which engages her ‘70s disco style with a modern spin. Following the wild success of her best-selling record, “Believe,” in the late 1990s and “Living Proof: The Farewell Tour” in the early 2000s, Cher graced the Vegas stage. For three years from 2008 to 2011, she dazzled crowds with “Cher at the Colosseum,” a 200-performance residency at the Colosseum in Caesar’s Palace. While Cher sold out shows, she also geared up for her hugely-popular return to the silver screen in the 2010 film musical “Burlesque” as Tess, a woman performing in a “New Burlesque” nightclub alongside Christina Aguilera. With a box-office hit in hand, Cher also relished in the success of “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me,” one of the film’s songs, which earned Cher, the vocalist, and Diane Warren, the songwriter, a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 2011. With a comeback of sorts into the pop-culture sphere, the actress and songstress laid the foundation for her next big hit. Cher’s newest single “Woman’s World,” an anthem for women and a call to female empowerment, is Cher’s eighth number-one single on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Released in June 2013, this dance-pop hit has music-lovers awaiting the release of her full-length album. The album, entitled “Closer to the Truth” is Cher’s 26th solo studio album and is set for worldwide release in September 2013. Working with superstar artists like Timbaland and Pink, Cher built an album that is sure to please the masses with emotional ballads, up-tempo dance tracks and many melodic numbers. Capping off the impending events surrounding Cher’s latest musical venture is the “Never Can Say Goodbye Tour,” which will promote “Closer to the Truth.” Cher has announced to the world that this will be her last tour—a moment to “do it well” one final time. No matter what she does in the future, Cher holds a legacy unlike any other artist. Known to the world as the “World’s Number One Pop Icon” as well as one of the greatest movie stars of all time, Cher, an unparalleled and inimitable performer, has held onto greatness throughout the decades, enrapturing audiences, critics and the music world alike. Paving the way for a new generation of performers, Cher continues to inspire all with her talent and longevity.

ELTON JOHN’S GUITAR PLAYER AND MUSICAL DIRECTOR DAVEY JOHNSTONE IS PROUD TO BE A SCOT, BUT CONSIDERS HIMSELF A “BORN AGAIN AMERICAN.” Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Johnstone says that although he had a very happy childhood, he grew up in a “not very well off family. If you wanted to do anything with your life, you really had to get out of Edinburgh. It’s a beautiful town, but dodgy weather. They only get maybe two weeks of summer. When I found the whole climate situation and open spaces of California, it really moved me.” Johnstone came to the United States about 32 years ago, eventually building a home in Calabasas about 15 years ago. He was already a member of the Elton John band. It all began when he first moved to London. Because he played mandolin, banjo and the sitar in addition to the guitar, he was called for many interesting session jobs including one for Bernie Taupin, Elton John’s lyricist. “Elton must have heard it because he then asked me to come in and play on his album called ‘Madman Across the Water.’ There was this very shy person sitting behind the piano. I played the song that he wanted me to play on and I thought, ‘Ooh, this guy is good.’ I did what I normally do and suggested certain things for the arrangement and instrumentation and we got on really well.” They cut “Tiny Dancer” , “Madman Across the Water” and “Levon” in one morning. The following day he received a call asking if he would consider joining John’s touring band. That was 1971. Shortly thereafter, John cut Honky Chateau, his first album with his “road band,” yielding “Rocket Man,” which exploded to No.1 and launched the album to the top position as well. “I thought, ‘Okay, hang on, this is going to be the ride of your life.’” While Johnstone has been touring the world, becoming John’s musical director in the late ‘80s, he’s managed to maintain a balanced home life. He has seven children in total, four with his wife Kay, one of whom they lost tragically in 2001 while his wife was visiting him on tour in Chicago for his 50th birthday. While under the care of two nannies, their 9-year old son Oliver hit his head on the side of their pool and drowned. “It’s the most horrific thing any parent can go through. When that kind of thing happens, you realize nobody has some kind of get out jail free card. My wife and I obviously went through the ultimate hell any parent can go through, but the community was so unbelievably wonderful and supportive. Elton also has been so supportive. Having the support and love of my friends, family and colleagues has allowed me to carry on.” And what carrying on means to Johnstone is playing in a situation that he considers magical. “What is wonderful is going to different countries and hearing how people react to the music, who come up and say, ‘You’ve made such a difference in my life.’ I feel so fortunate.”

Q: Specifically to Georgia and Gary, you both had successful writing careers, why would you... Kenny: ...let Kenny come along and screw it up? Q: That was pretty much the question. This is hard work. Why would you elect to do this? Gary: Writing for other artists got a lot tougher and the industry is changing, so we are looking for alternatives to stay satisfied; plus, I came to Nashville 20 years ago to be an artist and when that didn’t happen, I fell back into writing for other people, but that dream never went away. When this opportunity presented itself, I wasn’t going to let it pass. I would have rather that it didn’t happen in the cocktail hours of my life, but it’s better than not happening at all. Q: Georgia, was this the opportunity to live the dream?
W W W.W E S T L A K E M A G A Z I N E . C O M
Georgia: It was. When I came to Nashville, I came to be a writer, not an artist. I became an artist because I wanted my songs to be heard. They weren’t getting recorded fast enough. When that didn’t work out, I became a writer for hire. I love to perform, so when this opportunity came along it became a chance to do everything creative that I was born to do, all in one package. Q: Kenny, you’re on round three -- Loggins & Messina, your solo career and now this. How hard is this? Kenny: It depends. When Blue Sky Riders are my opening act on the road and I do double duty and have 15 minutes between going back on, that makes for a longer night. But in a way that’s easier than when Blue Sky Riders is the headliner, because then we have to do a lot of promo, radio, podcasts and TV and we push it really hard. Georgia: But as soon as we hit the stage, it’s so worth it.

Kenny: One of the reasons I want to do the performances is because I want people to hear the record (Finally Home). If we can reproduce the record on stage, they will take the group seriously. Georgia: I grew up listening to Kenny. I lived in San Antonio and I loved country music and would read liner notes and knew Gary Burr’s name and I knew I was good at this. I just did my job and along the way I met Gary and then I met Kenny. I had no idea they would be in my life. You just keep doing the work. Q: It would be fun if each of you would describe the other person in one word. Georgia: Kenny is generous, Gary is kind. Kenny: Georgia sparkles and Gary....

“I have a wonderful production crew, a great band and I get to walk out on stage and start playing just the first couple of chords of one of these songs I wrote and 10,000 people stand up and start singing along and an incredible energy comes from them. It’s an amazing, powerful experience. It’s indescribable. It keeps me young and my creative juices flowing. The only hard part is being away from home.” Cronin says there have definitely been tough times. He recalls how early on kingpin record executive Clive Davis turned him down. “Some of the songs he passed on were ‘Can’t Fight this Feeling’ and ‘Time for me to Fly,’ songs that went on to be number one hits.” While many would be discouraged, Cronin says he can’t live without music, so he plowed on and consequently, was able to live many highlights, including, he says, Live Aid, in 1985, and playing Madison Square Garden in 1981. “As a kid, I didn’t really even know what Madison Square Garden was, but I remember saying, ‘Mom, someday, I’ll headline Madison Square Garden and when I do, I’m going to bring you and dad out so you can be there.’ In 1981, when REO Speedwagon sold out as headliners at Madison Square Garden, I flew my parents out, which was so cool.” “There have been so many highlights,” Cronin said. “The whole thing has kinda been a highlight.”

NORTH RANCH RESIDENT FOR THE PAST 16 YEARS, KEVIN CRONIN, SAYS HE IS A LUCKY MAN AS A FATHER AND HUSBAND, AND AS THE LEAD SINGER OF REO SPEEDWAGON FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS. Cronin has four kids, one grown and three teens, a junior in high school and fraternal 13-year old twin boys. “Knock on wood, they both play basketball and play different positions and complement one another, so they’re not in competition in that way,” said Cronin. “My wife, Lisa, is really good at keeping them grounded and with me being gone half the time, that’s a little more of a challenge, especially in these years where I feel like they really need their daddy. I work hard at spending time with them when I’m at home. I mean, I’ve gotta be away, that’s where I work, but when I’m home I really concentrate on being connected. I take off my rock n’ roll hat and hang it at the door and put on my daddy hat. “It takes a great woman to put up with it all,” Cronin continues. “It’s a challenge as parents and even as a married couple, because I’m gone so much. I have to hand it to my wife. She holds down the fort.” He is proud of the longevity of the band and of having been a part of the fabric of people’s lives through the writing of many such songs as “Keep On Loving You,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” and “Time for Me to Fly.”

HE SAYS HIS GOAL AS A YOUNGSTER WAS TO WRITE FICTION AND IN MAY 2014, TOUCHTONE WILL PUBLISH “MAGNIFICENT VIBRATION,” HIS FIRST NOVEL. The plot is centered on a hero who has hit a dead end and serendipitously receives an 800 connection to God. Springfield says it features his “certain world views and my dark humor.” The success of his 2010 autobiography “Late, Late at Night,” which he wrote all by himself in less than six months, gave him the confidence to write the novel. “Rolling Stone” named it one of the top-25 autobiographies of all time, probably because Springfield was brutally transparent in the book. “It wouldn’t have been a real story without the truth,” says the 25-year Malibu resident. “It was a little uncomfortable, but I guess I’m basically glad I did it.” The rocker who moved from Australia to
the United States in 1971, grabbed the attention of General Hospital viewers in 1981 where he remained for two years, while producing the No.1 hit single “Jessie’s Girl” in 1982, kicking off a successful music career. What he hid until his recent memoir was his battle with depression from the time he was a kid. “No one knew what it was then,” he says. “I struggled with bouts and everyone thought I was just moody. It wasn’t until really the mid ‘80s that I realized I actually had something going on that could be addressed.” He took time off and went into intensive therapy. “For a writer, it’s really a good thing to look inward. It wasn’t a lot of fun, but it was important that I did it.” In the book, Springfield also opened up about “not being the best husband I could be,” he says. “It was stuff I had to deal with. It had to be dealt with so I could get on with my life.”
Nonetheless, his marriage to his wife, Barbara, with whom he has two sons, has remained intact for nearly 30 years. “It hasn’t been easy, but it’s worth it. Everyone has their battles. That’s why there are so many divorces because people don’t want to fight for it.” His recipe for keeping his marriage going that long? “You marry the right girl, that is basically the end of the story.” Currently, Springfield is working on another record. With so many different talents -acting, music and writing -- has Springfield decided which one he is? “No, I’m still looking,” says Springfield who will appear at the Canyon Club on September 20. “There are a lot of things I want to do. I’m passionate about all the things I love and I’m lucky enough to be able to pursue all of them and have some success with them. I don’t like just sitting around or living in the past. I have to keep working and moving.”

While Five for Fighting has performed across the world, nothing compares to the performance at Madison Square Garden for the concert for New York after 9/11 where Ondrasik performed “Superman.” “Nothing will matter more than that night singing for our country,” exclaimed Ondrasik. Aside from performing in dozens of venues, Ondrasik has also had his song “Chances” featured as the end title of “The Blind Side,” “World” featured as the HBO promo for the final Sopranos episode and he also takes pride in his performances at the Daytona 500, NHL All Star Game and Monday Night Football halftime show. Aside from his music career, Ondrasik is also very involved in many philanthropic projects. He has performed numerous concerts for the Troops as well as worked with charities such as Augie’s Quest, Operation Homefront, Fisher House and many more. “Music can be a great tool for raising awareness and fundraising for charities that do amazing work.” Ondrasik thanks his parents, his greatest role models, who encouraged him to pursue his dream as a child. “They reinforced work ethic and humility, two things you need if you want to sustain a career in this game,” said Ondrasik. His wife, Carla, and two children are the subjects of many of his songs and provide him with the enthusiasm and joy that fuel both his music and his life. Ondrasik says that the most rewarding part of his career is to see “how music can make a difference in people’s lives. To have a few songs that have fallen into culture and continue to find their way into life’s moments is humbling.” This fall, Five for Fighting is coming out with its sixth album titled, “Bookmarks.” “Every record is a slice of life and is something I’m proud of.”

KNOWN FOR HIS HIT SINGLES “SUPERMAN” AND “100 YEARS,” JOHN ONDRASIK, IS PERHAPS, BETTER KNOWN AS FIVE FOR FIGHTING, HAS BEEN WRITING MUSIC IN THE WESTLAKE NEIGHBORHOOD FOR MANY YEARS, CREATING SOME OF HIS TIMELESS TUNES IN OUR VERY OWN BACKYARD. Ondrasik was introduced to music at a very young age, as his mother was a piano teacher and taught him the basics of reading and playing notes. Though he quit the piano at age 13, Ondrasik’s songwriting blossomed during this time. As a child, he dabbled in musical theater and in his teens, began to seriously study his voice. “Since many of my favorite rock singers trained classically, I followed in their footsteps,” explained Ondrasik. “Though I had some opportunities in the opera world, I was a passionate fan of the great singers of the 70s and was constantly writing songs in that genre.” While he attended UCLA, Ondrasik studied applied sciences and mathematics in order to have a “fall back plan if music didn’t work out,” however, “my whole apartment at UCLA was a recording studio littered with song lyrics and proofs.” As a songwriter, inspiration stems from “experience, observation, perspiration and frustration,” said Ondrasik. “Songs are a combination of that initial flicker of an idea and thousands of hours of hard work.” Ondrasik’s songs reflect his various worldviews, passions and have a specific sentimentality and optimism. When he achieved his first record deal in the late 90s, the label told him “that in this age of Grunge, Lilith Fair, and Boy Bands, the male singer is dead, so you need a band name.” Having just come from an LA Kings game, Ondrasik jokingly suggested “Five for Fighting,” which the label, much to his surprise, loved.

IT WAS ALMOST THE TV SHOW BLUE BLOODS ALL OVER AGAIN BECAUSE IT LOOKED LIKE EDWARD JOSEPH MAHONEY, AKA EDDIE MONEY, WAS GOING TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HIS GRANDFATHER AND FATHER AS A POLICE OFFICER WHEN HE WORKED WITH THE NYPD IN THE MID ‘60S FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. AS A NYPD TRAINEE HE HAD THE PERFECT JOB. Because he had been thrown out of his shop class in high school, (“You know, when it takes you three years to make one of those salad bowls?”) he wound up taking typing. “In those days, people didn’t take typing classes,” he says. “I got on the police department and they asked if anyone could type and I raised my hand, so I wound up typing the roll calls.” For Money, that was ideal since the hours were 8-4 and he didn’t have to quit his high school band. Lucky for music, it kept him in the game and eventually he left for Northern California where he attended Merritt College and then U.C. Berkeley, until he was discovered by the legendary promoter, Bill Graham. Graham managed him and Money secured his first record deal in 1977. Soon the radio airways exploded with such hits as “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” “The first thing I know, I was on Saturday Night Live and I got to be friends with John Belushi and Gilda Radner,” he recalls. “I opened up for the Rolling Stones and played with the Who, Fleetwood Mac and Steve Miller. It was a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun.” He and his wife, Laurie, moved to Southern California in 1988, finally making their home in Westlake Village. “I love Westlake Village,” Money says. “It’s a great community. I love bike riding here, being close to the beach and playing golf.” The couple has raised five children, all following in his footsteps he says. “I would rather they’d want to be dentists, doctors or lawyers,” he says. “I don’t know why they’d want to get into rock n’ roll. But I found out the best way to date the cheerleaders without being on the football team was to be in a rock band in high school.” Money still plays about 125 dates a year -- which will include an upcoming October 19th show at the Canyon Club. Money, a big jokester, teases, “I have five kids, I’ll do anything to get out of the house.” He goes on a rant, including: “Shoulda’ named one of the kids Owen ... get it? Owen Money?” he offers with his raucous laugh. He’s all personality, but anyone who saw that Geico commercial can see that. And who didn’t see it? “How about that Geico commercial? It was Laurie’s idea to do that and it really took off,” he says. “I couldn’t believe it. Now I have to shave and wash my hair just to go down to the gas station because everybody wants to get a picture of me,” he says with a laugh.

While playing music on her radio show, especially electronic dance music, she became inspired to record a new album. “That is the new baby of electronic music that began back when we started Berlin.” The name Berlin is still a bit misleading for some. When the group broke in the early ‘80s, the synthesizer driven sound of the band and its collective image gave the misconception that the band was European or perhaps even hailed from Germany as its moniker suggested. To this day, some still assume that’s the case. “John Crawford, my partner of 13 years, has a German background and he was in love with the whole exciting European music scene. He’s from Orange County. Orange County doesn’t sound cool. We tried to put forth that whole avant garde image.” Nunn says that to this day what makes her tick are the live shows. “When I think about the highlights for me it’s the different live experiences like doing a duet with Pat Benatar. Those kinds of things are a gift from God. Or being at the US Festival and not only playing in front of 250,000 people, but getting to see the line-up of acts as a fan. Bandmate John Crawford didn’t want to record the song because they hadn’t written it. It was penned by Giorgio Moroder, who had produced their first Top 10, “No More Words,” and when Moroder was called to produce and write the soundtrack for Top Gun, he brought them that gem. “John said, ‘We can’t do that song, we didn’t write it and you don’t put songs on your record that you didn’t write,’” “recalled Nunn. Of course, Thayer could never imagine that one day he really would be performing in massive arenas beside the real life Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Thayer grew up with a great appreciation for music. His mother was a concert violinist and a singer and Thayer’s first instrument was the saxophone. By 13, he says he discovered rock n’ roll, girls and guitars. His mom bought him a Fender Mustang starter electric guitar and his parents let him grow his hair long, he says. “My mom and dad were cool like that, they got a lot of flak from my aunts and uncles,” he says. Thayer began with garage bands and founded Black ‘n Blue in 1981, moving from Portland to L.A. “like the Beverly Hillbillies,” he says.
Black ‘n Blue opened for KISS in the mid ‘80s and Simmons had produced a couple of their four albums, so by the time that band had run its course in the early ‘90s, Thayer had a part time job with Stanley and Simmons, working behind the scenes. While many sources say Thayer painted Stanley’s house and cleaned Simmons’ gutters, he puts that urban legend to rest: “One time Paul was painting a room in his house and I helped him out and somehow that turned into painting houses. And no, I never cleaned Gene Simmons’ gutters. I did do odd jobs occasionally, to sustain myself and pay my bills at the time.” Thayer was thinking about a career in management when it became apparent that Frehley was going to leave KISS. Thayer’s presence in the camp made him the likely replacement. His first gig was in 2002 for a private show in Jamaica for about 150 people with full production. “That was my baptism by fire,” he says. “It’s an honor to put the KISS make-up on,”
Thayer says, explaining they all put their own make-up on. “Putting it on, donning the outfit, walking on stage and playing a show is surreal. It certainly puts a smile on your face.” His first official public performance was a year later with the KISS Symphony in Melbourne, Australia, in February 2003 with a 60-piece orchestra adorned in KISS make-up. Thayer says he feels so blessed to be able to play music and do something he loves. “It’s not like work,” he says. “I never take it for granted.” Recently wrapping up the “KISS Monster” world tour, Thayer can’t wait to get back to his personal paradise that he shares with his wife, Amber, in Lake Sherwood. “Growing up in the beauty of Oregon drew me to the Westlake area. It’s a great place to come back and relax. People ask me, ‘What are you going to do when you get off tour? Are you going to go on vacation?’ No, my vacation is going home.”

Scott says learning engineering while working with the Beatles was a blessing because they were experimental and there were no time or creative restraints. “I got to experiment with different mikes and things because that’s what they wanted,” Scott says. “My education as an engineer worked in sync with what they wanted as artists. It took me a long time to realize how amazing George Martin was. Sometimes I thought, ‘What’s he doing? He’s just sitting there.’ But at one point, Bowie was doing an interview for BBC and he was asked about working with me. When he said I was his George Martin I realized that what he meant was you put talent in the studio and allow them to do what they do.” Scott says Bowie was the best artist with whom he has ever worked. “On the five albums I co-produced with him, I would say that 95 percent of the vocals were first takes from beginning to end, no manipulation whatsoever. It was amazing. I pulled up part of the vocals to ‘Five Years’ off of Ziggy and at the end of it, you can literally hear him crying as he’s finishing up. I’m sure that’s why those things resonate so much with people still. They’re real, unlike the way so much music is manipulated today. His performances were straight from his soul.”

PRODUCER AND ENGINEER, KEN SCOTT SAYS THAT VARIETY HAS BEEN THE SPICE OF HIS LIFE. “IT’S WHAT HAS KEPT ME SANE,” HE DECLARES. And what a variety it has been. The 14-year Oak Park resident has done everything including work as an engineer on Beatles’ projects and some of their subsequent solo work, produced David Bowie’s music, worked with Elton John, managed Missing Persons and is currently producing metal’s Hellion. Needless to say, it’s all made great reading in his book, Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust. His highlights, he says, haven’t been so much the projects, as the personal moments, indelible in his mind. “I was blessed to get back together with George Harrison for a period of time before his passing and I got to spend a lot of time with him at his place in England. George was into ukuleles and he had them everywhere. There was one occasion when we walked into his big hall and he picked up a ukulele and started to play a new song to me. Tears started to roll down my face and I thought, ‘Why me? Why am I blessed with this?’ I’ve had Elton play ‘Candle in the Wind’ to me. I’ve had McCartney play ‘Let it Be’ to me. Seeing Elton write ‘Rocket Man’ in ten minutes. These are the important things to me.”

WHEN THE VATICAN CALLED GINO VANNELLI IN 2001 AND TOLD HIM POPE JOHN PAUL II NOT ONLY REQUESTED HIS PERFORMANCE AT THE JUBILEE, BUT WOULD ALSO HAVE A PRIVATE AUDIENCE WITH THE SINGER, VANNELLI THOUGHT IT MIGHT JUST BE A PRANK. It turned out, the Pope had heard his recording of “Parole Per Mi Padre,” (“A Word to my Father”) a song he had written after his father had passed away, addressing some of the regrets he had about the relationship. After Vannelli’s rehearsal and audience with the Pope, who whispered such messages in his ear as, “Take care of your family, do what the soul wants you to do and God is always with you,” Vannelli came down with a 103 degree temperature. He was shivering and could barely speak and one of the Vatican doctors said the only solution was to shoot steroids directly into his vocal cords. “I thought, ‘What the hell.’ I did it and I was good for one song and after that, I was so sick for seven days.” For Vannelli, this was a highlight in a career that had already included such hits as “People Gotta Move”, “I Just Wanna Stop,” and “Living Inside Myself.” Oddly enough, he started out as a drummer, growing up in Montreal. He admits he wanted to be Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa and actually got to meet them as a kid. Later, Buddy Rich recorded Vannelli’s composition, “Storm at Sunup.” Vannelli sang behind the drums in bands with his brother, Joe, as a teen, but one day he had to make a decision.
“I reluctantly got off the drums and went out front. I felt like a shorn lamb, but finally it didn’t feel so bad, especially when the girls started noticing,” said Vannelli, who began writing songs at age 15. He finally moved to L.A., eventually settling in Thousand Oaks in the ‘80s, making some of his hits in the southland, and even his Black Cars album in his brother’s studio in Agoura. For the last couple of decades, Vannelli has been living in Oregon, where he has enjoyed rediscovering his music with new musicians and new approaches. “In 2008, I put together a Portland band and we started touring. People liked the new arrangements to a lot of the old songs so much, they kept on asking us to record them, so we recorded an album called Best and Beyond in 2010. It really is a good idea of what the show is all about,” said Vannelli, excited to be playing in Los Angeles in November for the first time in decades. He also has “a great family life” with his wife of 38 years, Patricia, with whom he has a 26-year old son, Anton. While he says the relationship takes no effort, he does have some advice: “Make a vow from the beginning of your relationship as we did. I said ‘We will never call each other names or swear at each other, no matter how angry we are. You have to promise the same.’ We have kept that vow.” Gino Vanelli will appear at the Saban Theater on November 8th for his first performance in Los Angeles in more than 15 years.

AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 15, RICK ALLEN BECAME THE DRUMMER FOR DEF LEPPARD, THE ICONIC ROCK BAND THAT PRODUCED HIT SINGLES SUCH AS “POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME,” “ROCK OF AGES” AND “LOVE BITES.” In 1984, at the height of his fame, Allen was in a car accident that permanently changed his life. Allen lost his left arm but was able to turn personal tragedy into a spiritual transformation, and continued to have a successful career by creating a unique drum set that enables his left leg to replace the actions of his left arm. This adversity allowed Allen to reach out to a new audience and has encouraged him to share his experience. Over the past 10 years, Allen has connected with cancer patients, children with special needs, at-risk youth in crisis, families of domestic violence and veterans. For his efforts, Allen was awarded the Humanitarian Award by Maria Shriver’s Best Buddies of California in 2002 and was also the recipient of a Carry Forward Award from the Wounded Warrior Project in 2012. As an extremely philanthropic individual, Allen teamed up with John Roberts of Wounded Warrior Project and together, they created “The Rockstar and the Warrior” campaign. As someone who personally understands what trauma can do to an individual, Allen helps others come to terms with their “new normal.” Allen is also involved in the Veteran Resiliency Project, which supports veterans and their families as they learn to live with the impacts of war and separation. Allen is especially proud of the nonprofit organization he helped create in 2001 called The Raven Drum Foundation, which serves to educate and empower people in crisis. Over the years, Allen has not only touched the hearts of people with his rock music, but also with his passion for assisting and bettering the lives of those who have gone through trauma as he did.
ROLLING STONE ONCE REFERRED TO MUSICIAN TRAVIS BARKER AS "PUNK'S FIRST SUPERSTAR DRUMMER." Barker took up drums at the age of four when his Mother, Gloria, bought him a drum set. He started taking drum lessons at the age of five. In 1993, at the age of 18, Barker joined punk group The Aquabats, however, it wasn't until 1998 when his career really took off upon joining the band Blink-182. The band's success as a pop punk bank is legendary. In 2008 a life-changing event took place when Barker's Learjet crashed while taking off from Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina en route for Van Nuys, California. Four people died, including Barker's close friend and assistant along with two crew members and a security guard. Barker suffered second and third degree burns, and though his close friend Adam Goldstein (DJ AM) also survived, he died of an accidental drug overdose a year later. Barker, known for his many tattoos, says that his first tattoo was burned off during the horrific incident. However, inspired by the event, Barker has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to help make a positive impact in the lives of other burn survivors. On September 11th, 2013, Barker and his band will be performing a benefit concert in New York honoring 9/11 which will help support burn survivors. Barker and his family currently reside in Calabasas and he is often spotted out and about on Daddy duty with his beautiful children. Barker owns and co-owns two record labels and a clothing company and last month stated that he would soon be releasing a new project in 2013 which his many fans and twitter followers are, no doubt, anxiously awaiting.

PRODUCER AND ENGIOVANNA MORAGA CLAYTON, LISA DONDLINGER, KAY-TA MATSUNO AND JORGE VILLANUEVA HAVE ALL HAD SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL CAREERS. However, when their career paths crossed, they realized that they could create a dynamic fusion that independently each member could neverachieve. From this, their musical group Quattro originated. “We are like a family with all our successes and our challenges. There have been a lot of opportunities for growth individually and collaboratively,” said Clayton. “POPZZICAL,” the name of the group’s debut album, clearly defines the style and collaborative quality of music these four musicians create. “We took the ‘POP’ from Latin Pop, the ‘ZZ’ from jazz and the ‘ICAL’ from classical,” explained Clayton. “We fuse these styles together to create a blend no one has heard before.” Each member of the quartet brings ideas to the table, prompting a process “we like to call ‘Quattro-ize’” where everyone has a chance to “put their stamp on it.” Quattro has performed with artists ranging from Celine Dion, Adele, Will.i.am., Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake to Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti and Yo-Yo Ma. Because of the diverse blend of sounds that can be found in this group’s repertoire, Quattro easily fits into almost every genre of music. “Quattro represents unity and people coming together to create something better than they could ever create individually,” said Clayton. While each member of Quattro comes from a diverse background and has a comprehensive musical education, their unified love of music and togetherness creates a truly electrifying sound.
PERFORMING HER WAY TO STARDOM, MONTANA NATIVE SINGER-SONGWRITER, STEPHANIE QUAYLE, IS TURNING HER DREAMS INTO REALITY. “We are all growing, changing, and evolving. I think that I have really come into my own, and I am finding what works best for me. I feel like that is showing up in my songs,” says the country music recording artist. Quayle first discovered her passion for music at the age of 16, when she was hired as the singer for a band. In the fall of 2011 Quayle moved to Nashville, the country music capital of the world, and began to flourish as an artist,. Singing her way to success, Quayle performed at the CMA Music Festival in 2012 and 2013. Raised to be a strong-minded woman, the self-empowered artist stays focused on the future of her career and the impact of her music on devoted fans. “I am such a positive believer, and having that mindset makes such a huge difference on your outlook and your work. That’s what I want to inspire other people to do, because every moment is such a gift,” said Quayle. Quayle’s ultimate motivation is to inspire audiences and empower women to be their best and true self through her songs. Along with her music recently going to radio, Quayle’s latest project includes the release of her 6-song EP, “Stand Back,” on August 6. Quayle’s fiery energy and high-spirited vocals are sure to get your head nodding and your feet tapping while driving down the 101.

YOUNG STARS ON THE RISE—BRANDON HUDSON, 16, AND SAVANNAH HUDSON, 14—KNEW THEY WANTED TO PERFORM BEFORE MOST CHILDREN LEARN TO RIDE A BIKE. What began as similar passions in the same household soon turned into a unique sibling duo. “Because we work together, our bond as siblings is really tight,” said Brandon. The two began working together at the ages of nine and seven with Savannah as the natural performer and Brandon as the songwriter. Over the years, they have grown as artists together, but still allow each other to bring their individual styles to their music. Brandon and Savannah recently finished a 2-month tour with the Radio Disney Band R5. “The biggest thing we learned is that when you play different shows every single night, you are playing for a different crowd of people, so you have to learn how to adapt,” said Brandon. Additionally, the duo auditioned for America’s Got Talent and made it through the Los Angeles and Las Vegas rounds; they are on their way to performing live in New York.
Brandon and Savannah incorporate various genres into a diverse blend that they label as “indie pop.” They look at artists such as the Beatles and Elvis Presley, hoping to learn what it truly means to bring intensity and stage presence to every performance. Brandon and Savannah strive to reach millions of people with their music and want to prove that “we are not just an overnight success and have been working hard from a young age,” explained Brandon. “Stick with your dreams and be who you want to be,” suggests Savannah to young aspiring musicians. “In this industry, you are going to get so many ‘no’s,’ but keep going because one day everyone will love your music and you will rise to stardom.” With sold out performances at the House of Blues, The Roxy and many clubs locally and across the country already under their belt, Brandon and Savannah are well on their way to leaving a mark on the music industry. Check out their first EP titled “Adolescent Summer”, which will be in stores soon.

“IT WAS WRITTEN IN THE STARS AND IN WESTLAKE MAGAZINE,” SAID MIKAL BLUE, A PREMIER MUSIC PRODUCER, SONGWRITER, ENGINEER AND MIXER, ABOUT HIS ENCOUNTER WITH 13-YEAR-OLD SONGWRITER AND MUSICIAN SOPHIE ROSE. Two years ago, after dropping her eponymous debut album, Sophie Rose was featured in Westlake Magazine’s Summer Issue. The cover star of that issue was Grammyaward-winning artist Colbie Caillat whom Mikal Blue helped launch into superstardom. Discovering Blue’s name in the magazine’s feature of Caillat, Sophie Rose dreamed that she too would experience similar success with the help of Blue’s artful hand. Fast-forward a year and a half to February of 2013. At the Durango Songwriters Expo, the stars aligned as a chance meeting with Athena Marie Byrne and Billy Schafer, both songwriters and friends of Mikal Blue, brought Sophie Rose’s dream closer to reailty. After hitting it off last May while songwriting with Sophie Rose, Byrne and Schafer ended the suspense and introduced Sophie Rose to Mikal Blue. Since early July, Sophie Rose, Byrne, Schafer and Blue, collectively known as ‘Team Sophie,’ have been hard at work in Blue’s Revolver Recordings studio in Thousand Oaks. No longer the 11-year-old the magazine first met, Sophie Rose notes the creative freedom she experiences while working with Mikal Blue. He added, “She has very strong and valid ideas about the production, which, as a producer, I appreciate.” Sophie Rose continually expressed her excitement over the approaching completion of “Where It All Begins,” a 6-track EP, hoping that a record deal, the ability to put out a full-length album and the chance to further develop her skills as a songwriter all lie in the foreseeable future. With a team of experienced professionals behind her and a beautifully melodious voice and acoustic-guitar skills to match, Sophie Rose looks to be the next breakthrough artist.
GROWING UP IN THE RURAL SOUTH WITH A CHURCH CHOIR DIRECTOR AS HER FATHER, MARLA MAPLES WAS SURROUNDED BY MUSIC FROM A YOUNG AGE. In the early ‘90s, Maples’ father and writing partner asked her to record a few songs they wrote, marking the beginning of her singing career. Maples also spent time on Broadway, which was “definitely a dream come true and made me step up my game. I just had to jump in and work through all my fears,” said Maples. Additionally, Maples has appeared in soap operas and guest starred in a wide variety of TV series. She has had the chance to work with actors such as Michael J. Fox, Halle Berry, Mickie Rooney, Kristie Alley and Tim Allen, just to name a few. “There was so much to learn from all of them,” explained Maples. Maples recently finished her first full album titled “The Endless,” which she describes as a soul’s journey through time. Maples looked at inspiring leaders such as the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra and Michael Bernard Beckwith and strived to share their messages through her music. “I want everyone who really listens to the songs to feel more connected to something much higher than themselves.” Maples’ music will both inspire and heal those who listen to it; it is a new soothing sound that “you can move to, meditate to and work out to.” Oprah premiered her music video of “The Pearl” from her new album on OWN this month and now Maples wants to share her passionate music with the world.

A BREAKTHROUGH AESTHETIC ENHANCEMENT FOR BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS

RUTH SWISSA, A PROFESSIONAL PERMANENT MAKEUP ARTIST AND SKIN CARE SPECIALIST LOCATED IN AGOURA HILLS, RECENTLY DEVELOPED A NEW PRODUCT AIMED ESPECIALLY FOR BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS: A TEMPORARY AREOLA TATTOO. This amazingly realistic 3D areola tattoo is designed specifically for those who do not want permanent make-up just yet, only something temporary yet realistic. It works just like any nonpermanent tattoo would -- simply by placing it on the designated spot, wetting the back of the paper while holding it down and slowly pulling the paper away. It is a safe, quick, and easy way to achieve a look that many usually pay hundreds to acquire. This application of flesh-colored pigments may be used either as a supplement or as a less invasive alternative to skin-grafting. Swissa studied at a fine arts school abroad for eight years, completing extensive courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, calligraphy and photography. First and foremost an artist, she chose to specialize in permanent makeup (also called micropigmentation), using only the most organic ingredients to give her clients a fresh, natural look. She prides herself on her lengthy experience, state-of-theart techniques, color artistry, and good judgment. Swissa also offers Areola Pigmentation for women who want an areola permanently on their breasts. This is a medical micropigmentation process that is used to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nipple areola complex after reconstructive breast surgery. This method of pigmentation is less laborious than transplants and similarly beneficial. Tiny droplets of custom blended colors are skillfully deposited into the dermal layer of skin to simulate natural looking or well-defined make-up. This process is a selective art form of traditional tattooing whereby the natural features of the face are enhanced and defined. This technology is used by Swissa to perform areola pigmentation. She works extensively with plastic surgeons, who refer patients to her for medical micropigmentation procedures such as areola re-pigmentation (the area surrounding the nipple of the breast), scar camouflage, and vitiligo treatment. She is especially gratified by her work with breast cancer survivors, whom she has helped recover not only physically but also emotionally. Many of her clients report that they have a renewed sense of self-esteem and confidence thanks to Ruth's artistry and compassion. Swissa is a member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals and the American Academy of Micropigmentation. Her professional, private med spa ensures discretion and provides a refreshing interlude from the daily grind.

"The Hany's Hair'Em Woman's Support Group began in 2004. We thought we would be doing it for six moths and we are still going. We have done everything from flower arranging to yoga to playing name that tune," recalls Saturday. "Relationships are formed there. It’s a place women can share with other women who are going through the same thing. Sometimes it’s important to be able to talk to someone who actually knows what it feels like to lose your hair. To be around others who are going though similar things and have a community of support." Debbie Wagter who works in Khalil's front office added, "It is always fun, uplifting and a lot of laughs." The group meets the third Wednesday of every month at Khalil's office. As a cancer survivor and former patient of Khalil, musician and recording artist Alex Nester along with her husband Eddy Navaro are thrilled to announce their 2nd Annual "Burn It Down To Rise Above It" benefit concert honoring both the American Cancer Society and the Marcelle Erian Cancer Foundation. "Our 2011 benefit concert was a big party to celebrate 10 years of being cancer free - It was a huge success and I was blown away at the support from the local community and [entertainment] industry." The 2013 concert scheduled for October 12, 2013 at Los Globos Theater in LA is on track to exceed expectations, which is something Nester knows a great deal about. She credits Dr. Khalil and his staff along with her faith, family and friends for her ability to stay positive during her own journey with cancer. "Staying positive and holding onto hope when you are fighting any battle are two of the most important things...I want to be able to use my music to give back not only to the staff, but also to the patients - this annual benefit is my way of being able to do that." To find out more about the foundation visit www.marcelleeriancancerfoundation.org. The foundation stands in the gap for patients whose medical insurance falls short of providing necessities such as medication, medical equipment or even wigs for cancer patients undergoing treatment. Having lost his own mom at the age of six to cancer, Khalil determined early on to dedicate his life to making a difference. That dedication, according to his Patient Care Coordinator Jenny Saturday, "shows in how he treats the whole person. He is very compassionate - he was able to take what was so personal to him and turn it into a way to help a lot of people - it says a lot about his character." "Dr. Khalil is excellent at what he does. I am a former patient so I know what cancer patients go through. Dr. Khalil's support group and the Foun-

MONEY MATTERS
HOW CAN SENIOR WOMEN IMPROVE THEIR RETIREMENT OUTLOOK?
Consider these disparities: • Longer life expectancy — Both women and men are living longer these days. But you’ve still got the edge: Women reaching age 65 have an average life expectancy of 19.8 years, compared with 16.8 years for men, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And more years of life mean more expenses. • Lower earnings — The “wage gap” between men and women has narrowed — but it hasn’t disappeared. Women who work full time still earn, on average, only about 77 cents for every dollar earned by men, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And women drop out of the work force for an average of 12 years to care for young children or aging parents, according to
the Older Women’s League, a research and advocacy group. This time away from the workforce results in more than $500,000 in lost wages. Furthermore, there may be lifestyle issues that put greater financial pressure on senior women. For example, when it comes to giving money to their adult children, women may be more generous than men. Of course, that’s hard to prove, but according to annual surveys conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles, there has been one major, consistent disparity between the sexes over the past four decades: Approximately two-thirds of women say “helping others who are in difficulty” is an essential or very important life objective, compared with only half of the men. Thus, it seems plausible that retired women may be more committed to providing assistance to their grown children — which, of course, could lead to additional financial strains. Considering all of these factors together, it’s clear that, as retirement approaches, you need to take action. Here are a few suggestions: • Take advantage of your retirement plan. Put as much as you can possibly afford into your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan. Every time you get a raise, try to increase the amount you contribute to your retirement plan.
• Know how much to expect from Social Security. Contact the Social Security Administration (www.ssa.gov) to make sure your earning records are correct and to find out how big your benefit checks will be at retirement. • Be aware of wills, trusts and beneficiary designations. If you are married, make sure you know what legal arrangements have been made for you financially from your husband should you outlive him — which, statistically speaking, is likely. • Get professional help. To identify and quantify your retirement-planning goals, and to choose the mix of investments that can help you make progress toward those goals, you may well want to work with a financial professional. And here’s one final tip: Stay informed. Whether you’re single or married, divorced or widowed, know where you stand with regard to your savings, investments and retirement plans. Your financial future is in your hands — so get a good grip on it.

"You are looking at something" I said as I looked at the screen. Knowing my family history, and the fact that she was an experienced doctor, the radiologist felt secure in saying, "See these little white spots? They could represent calcifications. Sometimes that is how breast cancer presents itself. Now can we do the mammogram?" Turning away from the radiologist, I felt a lone tear drip down the side of my face. I knew that I had no time to cry but that this tear was confirmation of what would be forthcoming. The great escape that I could not escape... Come on. I had watched my mother give way to Pancreatic Cancer at 59, after kidney cancer at 49. My Dad had colon cancer at 42, followed by Kidney Cancer and Melanoma to top it off. I had also watched the disease swiftly take other family members way too soon. But, then again, this made perfect sense. I even have a chart, a family pedigree, with many relatives 'x'd out and color-coded by their cancer. Why should I be immune? Couldn't anyone just leave me money in lieu of bad genes? I had been involved with the music industry for over half of my life, but this was my biggest show to date- the day of surgery had quickly arrived. The anesthesiologist was the opening act. My surgeon, the rock star ... and the two lovely OR nurses, the backup singers.
The last thing I asked of Dr. David Chi was to keep me around to take care of my Dad. He promised that he would. I told him that he looked like a rock star ... the oxygen mask was placed over my face ... I was asked to count to 10 backwards ... I thought back to being four ... in for a “simple” tonsillectomy ... scared ... crying ... the mask being put on ... being asked if I could count backwards from 10 ... 9 ... 8 ... I was out. And now it was deja vu. But this time I acted like a big girl and did not cry. At some point I came to and my dad let me know what a battle Dr. Chi had fought for me. It was more intrusive than originally thought and he had worked hours and harder than expected. I try hard to not think back to this, my longest day. But sometimes, on days that I do not feel so swift, it helps to remember how far I've come these past couple of years. There is more ease of movement in my arm, although I do live in fear of lymphedema. And even though I have aches at the rib bone due to the radiation, the shooting pains are a distant memory. I have even gotten used to those “numb” areas and occasional twinges. Dr. Hannah Grossman, Dr. Catherine Moses, Dr. Martin Palmer, Dr. Gregory Johnson, Dr. Michael Hlinka, Dr. Miguel Gonzalez, geneticist Dr. Ora Gordon, and of course, Dr. David Chi, all keep a watchful eye and give me extra attention, aware of the weight
that a genetic mutation carries on one. I do have a genetic mutation that gives me a pretty high percentage of another primary, but I try and leave some of the worry in the hands of my doctors. I could have traveled anywhere in the world for my surgery, but I chose to stay right here in Thousand Oaks and have it performed by Dr. Chi at Los Robles Hospital. And if you find yourself in this unwanted position, lucky for all of you to be able to seek out my team for your care as well. Feel free to ask for my favorite right hand gal, Reenie in admissions. She shows true concern for each person who makes their way into her office. I have never thought of myself as a survivor, but as someone just trying to survive! However, they kind of say that cancer survivors get a new birthday. Your new birthday can either be the day of your diagnosis when you become a survivor, or even the day of your surgery. Since that date specifically sticks in my mind, I have decided that September 7th is my new, or 3rd birthday, exactly 14 days, two weeks out from my “real” birthday, the day that I was called in to the radiologist's office, to indeed confirm the MRI findings. So, as you read this essay, in this very special issue, I will be celebrating my 3rd birthday! Being younger works for me. I am very much a realist looking for the positives now. I kind of like the idea of getting a “do over!”

I often get asked "How did you find it?" With dense breasts, heck, everything feels like a lump, but something made me push for that ultrasound first. In my case, the ultrasound and the following biopsies confirmed what the mammogram showed as clear.

I heard him ask the man if he might use his cell for a moment as his wasn’t working. Champ hat finished his call and gave the phone to the man. “Thank you,” I heard the man say, and he took the phone and TOSSED it into the water as we passed the statue. “How dare you interfere with those of us who want to show respect for our country’s symbol of freedom? ike the title of his memoir, “Hillbilly Heart,” Billy Ray Cyrus always remembers what his dad told him: “Never forget where you come from.”
In his book, Cyrus shares the “bumpy roads” from his beginnings as a preacher’s grandson in Flatwoods, Kentucky, to the present, including some tucked away, painful memories. Anybody who knows his career, knows it hasn’t always been easy. One thing is clear: Cyrus has always been determined. Originally, he set his mind on being a ball player and received a baseball scholarship to Georgetown College. He ended up leaving college in his junior year. “I took my catcher’s mitt off when I was 20 years old and set it up on a shelf and listened to my intuition,” he says. “I drove to a music store, bought me a guitar and started a band. I wrote on a piece of paper that night -- ‘I’m going to be a successful singer/songwriter/entertainer. My music will be heard around the world and through my music and my life, I will be able to touch people’s lives.’” Cyrus’ debut country album “Some Gave All” hit the country charts at No. 1, but when “Achy Breaky Heart” soared to No. 1 on both the country and pop charts, it was a doubleedged sword. Although it brought him notoriety, the hit, viewed more as a novelty song, seemed to define his career and blind critics from his otherwise serious songwriting.
“I had made music for well over a decade and was at the point to where I was living in my car before that song came out, so I wouldn’t trade that song for anything,” he says. “To this day, the fans have stayed with me and a lot of it has been because of the magnitude of that song.” Cyrus believes there is a purpose and moral to every story. “I strive each day for purpose. Trust me, I’m far from perfect. There have been many trials and errors. Life is a series of adjustments. In a lot of ways it’s like backing your car in a tight parking space. Sometimes you might realize your bumper is getting a little close to the next car and you might have to pull the wheel to the right and pull it forward and put it in reverse, but if you stay focused, barring any catastrophe, you’ll get your car in the space.” Cyrus’ own personal trials have included his near 20-year marriage to Leticia “Tish” Finley, during which time they’ve raised five children. (He also has a son from another relationship.) In recent times, they have hit a couple of bumpy roads, even filing for divorce, but ultimately calling it off. “In a relationship there are peaks and valleys,” he says. “There are rough roads and every now and then you might even hit a smooth road. It’s all about looking to make your way through this journey we call life. We put things in perspective and make decisions and choices based on the love and what is right.” The Cyrus family lives in the Valley, and his 13-year old daughter Noah rides horses in Calabasas. “I’m really proud that she does these incredibly brave things. She does things I could never do.” Cyrus says he’s also proud of daughter Miley for taking artistic chances, which he knows something about. Both Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash gave him that advice early on: “‘Be real. Do what you do because you love it. Don’t try to fit the norm of what others are doing.’ That’s why I’m excited about this moment that I’m in right now,” says Cyrus, who is beginning work on a new album of songs he says are some of the best he’s written in his life. He has also been writing and producing two TV pilots that he describes as being on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. “There’s interest in both of them, so I’m going to have to make a decision, so I’m praying for wisdom and vision. Doc ran 88 episodes and Hannah Montana lasted 101. At this stage in my life, I’d better be sure which one I want to do. This could be my final curtain call.” Cyrus grabs his guitar and the baseball player at heart takes a swing, offering this advice, just as much to himself as to the readers: “Life is just like baseball. You’ve got to step up to the plate and swing and keep your eye on the ball.”
“BE REAL. DO WHAT YOU DO BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT. DON’T TRY TO FIT THE NORM OF WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING.”

AESTHETIC SURGERY TRENDS; LESS CAN BE BETTER
Dr. Peter H. Grossman is a board-certified plastic surgeon whose private medical practice in West Hills, California is divided between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He is the President of the Los Angeles Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Director of the Grossman Burn Centers. The diverse nature of Dr. Grossman's practice, inclusive of cosmetic surgery, burn, and reconstructive surgery, has made him one of the most sought after surgeons in the region. Dr. Grossman's accomplishments have been featured on television programs worldwide, including ABC Prime Time, Oprah, The Learning Channel, and the Discovery Health Channel. He has lectured extensively around the United States on topics related to cosmetic surgery and the treatment of burns, as well as, published numerous articles. Some things change not because they didn’t work, but because new things work better. Liposuction of the abdomen in women over 40 has been approached with trepidation by the experienced plastic surgeon because, while the liposuction works well on removing the fat, the skin in many individuals over 40 doesn’t always tighten well and often looks deflated after the procedure. Excitement however exists now because we are able to apply laser technology to the under surface of the skin and use that energy to tighten the skin. What is most exciting is the fact that liposuction, rather than a tummy tuck, can be offered to more women in their 40s and 50s and that technology now has more built in safety precautions to decrease the laser ‘s energy from causing damage to the skin. Smart Lipo by Cynosure is an example of a safer, minimally invasive laser assisted procedure that is designed to let the surgeon do more with less cutting. Cynosure has also developed the only FDA approved long-term solution to the problem of cellulite with their Cellulaze system. Cellulite, which affects over 80% of women to some degree or another, now has a more effective treatment that really works long term. It is possible that this laser technology may allow us to perform procedures on other parts of the body with positive objective outcomes “knifelessly” and if the patient desires, without general anesthesia. Is there hyperbole to the marketing of these new technologies? Absolutely. But when we brush that aside, there are definitely a few pearls to be found in the cosmetic and anti-aging marketplace. Expect more trends toward preventative maintenance and fine-tuning, resulting in a more natural and youthful appearance.

HIS YEAR, THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGERY AND THE AESTHETIC SURGERY EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION HOSTED THE AESTHETIC MEETING 2013 IN NEW YORK CITY. Informative scientific sessions and live demonstrations taught by the finest surgeons and professionals in various specialties, provided the latest information on premier global hot topics. Cosmetic surgery industry trends today are showing that less can be better. The trends now point toward minimally invasive procedures, but, here is the caveat: they need to work. There are tried and true invasive techniques that can help make us look younger, have better contoured bodies and improve our aesthetic appearance. These will always be the gold standard against which all new and perhaps more innovative modalities must be measured. Today’s standards are a balancing act between 1) evidence based medicine (data based decision making), 2) experienced based medicine (what has worked for the surgeon in his personal experience) and 3) new age technology. The first two are the corner stones of a good plastic surgery practice, but it’s the new tech that sells. Whether we like it or not, much about plastic surgery is based on what sells and not necessarily what is good. For the consumer in this market it can be hard to get a handle on what works and what is more hype then reality. Much of what is pushed in the marketplace one year is passé the next because ultimately, people realize that the treatment is a waste of money, or surgeons recognize that the risks and complications out weigh the benefits (think mesotherapy, feather lift, microdermabrasion, endermologie, trans umbilical breast augmentation, etc.).

“There’s a lot of fear, I feel, involved in being a single parent, and a lot of guilt,” she says. “It’s scary. This is the first time in a really long time that I haven’t been scared.” The year off also gave her time to spend with her 11 1/2 year old daughter Kaya, which she says was wonderful, and it allowed her the opportunity to launch a fine jewelry line with pieces spiritual in nature, some with diamond moons and stars, inspired by her daughter. “When my husband and I broke up and Kaya was going to be going to her dad’s for the first time, it was really rough for me. My aunt gave us matching moon and star necklaces and told us the mother moon and the bright shining star are always fixed in the sky and they’re never apart, so no matter where you are in the world, you’re always looking up at the same moon and star.” Her collection will be shown this coming December on HSN. Until then, a couple of pieces are available on her website: evalarue.com. She’s also been able to devote time to the Beckstrand Cancer Foundation for which she became the spokesperson in 2010. “I love the research aspect of other cancer foundations, but the great thing about this one is that they work with cancer patients on a day-to-day basis, providing what they need financially,” she explains. “When you are going through chemo and radiation, usually you can’t work, so Breckstrand tries to help keep people in their homes and keep the phone on. Right now we’re trying to go national.” Of course, LaRue is still working, just not full time at present. She recently enjoyed a guest-starring role on an episode of “Criminal Minds.” “It’s a great cast,” she says. “And a great set.” And what did she get to play? An FBI agent.

LOVE TO BEGIN MY DAY WITH “THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE. I will rejoice and be glad in it.” A bucket can hold only so much and then it runs over. As we begin our new day, it is so important to fill our bucket full of good things, good thoughts and expectations, but there is no room for whining, grumbling, anger and pity. If we expect good things to happen, good things WILL happen. If you have refused to allow bad things to fill your bucket, then it is more than just positive thinking. In reality, there is only so much room to store up for your day. Here are six suggestions to get you started. 1) love others as much as you love yourself 2) forgive all who have hurt you 3) do not hold a grudge toward anyone 4) pray for your enemies 5) do not gossip or lie 6) do not require others to live by your standards
Now you can continue to fill your bucket with good things. There is an excitement within when you’re waiting to see what good is going to happen in your day. Each due day, as we step into the beginning of our future, we are compelled to reflect on our recent past. Sept. 11, 2001 was a tragic day that set us on a path of renewal and change. It altered the way we think about ourselves and other people while staring death in the face. We became acutely aware of how colorless we are over it. Our priorities were challenged and people we never met were in our prayers. Old glory was dusted off in our minds to a new awareness for the things that really matter. We witnessed the change from selfishness to self-lessness, and the burdens of others became important and the word “getting” gave a way to “giving” without expectations. Standing through this ruthless awakening, many promises were made to become better people with more love in our hearts and thanks on our lips. How terribly unfortunate that it takes such a tragedy to bring us back to the center point of our lives, yet, how fortunate that we chose to listen and unite, as we recall, life’s blessings, which in the good times were taken for granted or even forgotten. That’s what new beginnings are all about, as we have stepped boldly into the new day. When it is beyond our reach to fix what is broken, whether it is a lost job or a national tragedy, we learn a much deeper truth: how to react to it and live with the fall out. Even skeptics are challenged to look God ward in search of empowerment greater than them. Through personal faith in our creator, our fears are bathed in comfort, wherein we can remain calm as these troubling waters rise and move slowly, and not fumble while trying to frame ramped answers. Each new day has a yesterday to review; this is how new resolutions are made and with our gift of choice, we become better people today than we were yesterday. We can keep as our own personal secret where “becoming better” is for each of us.

CHRISTINE MANGO BY JULIA SHAPIRO
Christine Mango, holiday decorator extraordinaire, is heightening the holiday spirit by placing a unique spin on holiday décor. Mango’s creative talent developed throughout her life as she began decorating for the holidays as a young child. In 1995, she became a professional decorator and now works both in local residents’ homes as well as on movie and television sets, in restaurants and in office buildings. While Mango enjoys all genres of decorating, she has found her niche in holiday decorating. For every project Mango takes on, she strives to incorporate both the clients’ style and her personality into the final product. For example, “TV personality Kym Douglas loves glam, so I created an old Hollywood feel. As for local residents Amber and Tommy Thayer and Gene and Shannon Simmons, I incorporated musical instruments into the mantle and tree décor.” Each consultation with a prospective client begins with Mango familiarizing herself with the décor and style of the space and the decorations already available. This method allows Mango to get a feel for the theme of the setting. Sharing ideas and calculating a budget comes next. “I take pride in the fact that I can work within any budget,” exclaims Mango. Once all the preliminary details have been settled, the rest is up to Mango’s creative mind and magical touch. “No job is too small or too big,” asserts
Mango. She has gone from decorating suburban homes to decorating Sylvester Stallone’s mansion and Disneyland’s Main Street. With over 17 years of experience, Mango brings life to any desired theme and creates a mood that is sure to brighten everyone’s holiday season. Mango appeared last December as a holiday decorating expert on Hallmark’s Emmy nominated “Home & Family Show,” was featured in the LA Times and Soap Opera Digest and was nominated for “Best Holiday Designs” in Beverly Hills. The holidays are a time of giving, and what Mango is able to create is one of the best gifts of all. “Decorating for the holidays and seeing the happy faces of my clients, especially their kids, is what I love most about my job,” said Mango. Her masterpieces have been seen in productions such as “Friends” , “Seinfeld”, “The Wedding Singer”, “The Parent Trap”, “Days of Our Lives” and “Roseanne” just to name a few. One of her next big projects includes working as a set decorator on a feature film for Serendipity Film Group next year. When she is not decorating, Mango works as a copywriter and a marketing and PR consultant in the area. Christine Mango’s attention to detail, unique perception and ability to blend her clients’ styles with their personalities is unparalleled, promising to bring extra cheer and joy this coming December.

showroom painted in amazing artwork and luxury automobiles that only a select group will get to experience, what really transcended to me were guests moving from one table to another, listening to winery specialists talk about their wineries compelling stories. Winemaker Philippe Melka showcased his amazing Cabernet with the Skipstone Oliver’s Blend. This wine shows the true quality of Cabernet grown on the Skipstone amphitheater vineyard. With a deep blackberry hue, the wine exhibits an intense nose with red berry notes. The wine is well balanced and mouthwatering with ripe tannins that ends with a very long and soft finish. Guests were gifted in being able to taste an array of wines from the famed winemaker that also included his Makena’s Vineyard Viognier and Faultline Vineyard in which blends 40 percent Cabernet Franc, 38 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 22 percent Merlot. Stonehaus, a private label of the local Stonehaus at The Westlake Village Inn, shared its Chardonnay and Red Blend. This private label is one that comes straight from the vineyards that surround the local and very popular tasting room and are both food friendly wines. Moving on to another amazing wine that really stood out was the Leviathan Red Wine. This blend of Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc was well balanced, with well-rounded tannins and had a perfect level of acidity. Daviana showcased what I consider an amazing marriage of varietals in its Cabernache. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache shows lush aromas of licorice infused raspberries, violets, strawberry jam, cinnamon and pepper finish. Daviana Winery is a perfect example of the boutique winery that will not stay a secret for long. This event was the perfect combination of amazing wines, sublime art, luxurious automobiles and most importantly, a way for businesses to stay connected and show their appreciation to their clients. All wines that were tasted are available to order through Wine Media Connect. continued

Melissa says “Wine is the glue that keeps brands connected and like wine, there’s always a new vintage that has a story to tell. Melissa adds “Coming on board with Westlake Magazine as the Wine Guide Director was the next step in connecting local companies with amazing wines from California and beyond.” Melissa will also be launching her very own wine club that will feature exclusive and hidden gems from boutique wineries in California that will give clients access to wines at all price points, but upholding exclusive winery standards. INE IS A MEDIUM THROUGH WHICH RELATIONSHIPS GROW, SUCCESSES ARE TOASTED AND EXPERIENCES ARE SHARED AND MADE MORE MEMORABLE. Many companies are looking outside of the typical marketing structure to find unique ways to stay connected with their clients. By introducing wine events to their exclusive clients, companies give a rare opportunity to taste wines from amazing boutique wineries that are hard to find, limited production and gives a glimpse to cult wines your clients may never have the chance to experience otherwise. By sharing this rare experience, companies find that they stay connected and create a true relationship with their clients. I was recently given the opportunity to create an event in which O’Gara Coach Westlake invited its exclusive clients to experience many sought after wines and paired them with world renowned artist, Hessam Abrishami. Abrishami employs a sophisticated technique that reflects his multiple subject references and includes materials such as acrylic, oil and ink. His apparently simple layering of elements and color palate coalesce the varied subjects and media to enhance his use of figurative images. Much like Abrishami’s color palate, the wines poured at the event created a story that explored the many varietals grown and mastered throughout California. These wineries included: Skipstone, Melka, Stonehaus, Leviathan Wines, Sandhi Wines, Gemstone Ranch, Daviana Winery and French Champagne houses Pommery and Gonet. These wines represent the true character of the region where they are produced as well as fanatical winemaking. Like O’Gara Coach Westlake automobiles, these wines are the finest in their class. “The natural marriage of fine wine and amazing art set among a backdrop of O’Gara Coach vehicles is something we have wanted to do for our clients and this event was surely our most unique ever,” said O’Gara Coach Westlake General Manager Mitch Anderson. The fact that these wineries represent some of the finest Napa Valley Cabernets, Cabernet Blends, Chardonnays and other varietals was a true experience for everyone who attended. Guests were given a special guided tour of the wines by special guest VP of Southern Wine & Spirits, Kim Beto. I had the special honor of working directly with Kim to hand select wines that would create a story consisting of amazing wines throughout California and take guests on a journey of what we felt were wines they would leave never forgetting. Beto says “A very exclusive wine tasting for art and automobile connoisseurs at a world class dealership.” This event married all things exclusive and privileged. Creating a truly magical introduction to the event, guests were welcomed with flutes of Pommery Champagne and then moved on to Gonet Brut Rosé Champagne. The Gonet Brut Rose Champagne has heightened strawberry notes, is textured and is a great pinot noir Champagne. For a toast to the end of summer, it had a fresh finish. As I looked around the

XECUTIVE CHEF LISA BIONDI OF MEDITERRANEO DEVELOPED HER INTEREST IN GOOD FOOD AND WINE AS A RESULT OF HER TRIPS TO NAPA VALLEY WITH HER FATHER. Lisa works with her sous-chef, Joe Serna, to constantly create new menu items and alternates three seasonal menus each year. When I visited Mediterraneo, I started with a refreshing peach and burrata salad with heirloom tomatoes and then, a cold Mediterranean seafood cocktail. For my main course, I enjoyed a mouth-watering swordfish on a bed of cauliflower, spinach and pine nuts with golden raisin purée, topped with au jus sauce. I finished with the house favorite dessert, a Nutella chocolate sundae with toasted hazelnuts. Mediterraneo also has a great selection of specialty cocktails, such as the refreshing Maker’s Mark lemonade and Karma Tequila watermelon margarita, which I enjoyed on my visit. Next door to Mediterraneo, John Notter recently opened Stonehaus, which has had roaring success and is now expanding in order to accommodate more customers. Lisa says she is looking forward to work with Joe on creating a new menu of warm, delicious small bites. I’m giving Mediterraneo the seal for “BEST CREATIVE MENU.” Another great local place to visit is Public School 805 which recently opened at the Promenade next door to The Grill. Created by Colin Kerr, this casual dining spot is equipped with a wholesome menu and a variety of handcrafted cocktails. Phil Kastel, VP of culinary operations, was brought on eight years ago to work with The Grill. On my visit to Public School 805, I started off with a kale Ceasar salad with a unique horseradish dressing with a side of the
handmade cheese and bacon tater tots. Then I moved onto the short ribs, cooked slowly overnight in a wood-burning oven, accompanied with horseradish mashed potatoes and an order of the house-cured salmon carpaccio with grilled potatoes and crostinis that I compiled into a small, delicious sandwich. I graduated to the main course -- a big and juicy Colorado lamb burger topped with tomato cranberry jam, arugula, brie and their special Moroccan sauce on a brioche bun. For dessert, I tasted the lemon meringue: a pecan graham cracker base with lemon curd and lemon meringue in a jar, and a chocolate chip cookie with bacon vanilla ice cream sprinkled with sea salt. This fantastic new pub gets my seal for “BEST NEW RESTAURANT IN WESTLAKE.” Lastly, no meal, party or event is complete without sweets to tickle our senses and Westlake's Sweet Arleen’s is no stranger to the area. Recently, Sweet Arleen’s took the (cup) cake and won “Cupcake Wars” for the third time in a row on the July 7th episode on The Food Network. This exciting win comes right off the heels of announcing their nationwide franchising rollout, with the incredible sale of eight new stores within the first 45 days of going to market. Needless to say, this is a victorious time for the Southern California gourmet dessert retailer. I suggest dropping in after dinner, or picking up an arrangement of cupcakes that will leave you and your guests in a heavenly state. I'm giving Sweet Arleen's the seal for "BEST CUPCAKES SOUTH OF THE BORDER."
