canal weaving through the humble administrator's garden
The city of Suzhou lies in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River adjacent to the lake Taihu. The city’s prominent waterway networks, like the Grand canal, have established Suzhou as a key trading city. Water and landscape design forms the basis of design. The massing is derived by need to maximize the views towards the lake. Pathways carved by water inform the urban plazas - their design and use. The etheareal quality of light shimmering across the lake influences the architecture of the tower design. 5 distinct typologies are combined into a single 5 million sf mixed use project.

The thee academic buildings of Karamay Engineering University Phase 2, serve: the College of Mechanical Engineering (160,000 sf), the College of Electrical Engineering (150.000 sf), and a general classroom building (135,000 sf). Each consist of classrooms, labs, faculty offices, and commons. Phase 2 is one of three phases that will complete the academic campus. The campus energy of the academic quad becomes the basis of design for phase 2. While these buildings share this academic setting, their individuality is expressed as a reflection of their functional typology. The materials used are terracotta and metal panels.

Suning.com is a new branch of the brick and mortar sales of Suning. Located adjacent to the main headquarter building, it enjoys a prominent presence in nanjing - it’s relationship to the purple mountain. The new corporate headquarters will accomodate a staff of 8700 in a 2.1million sf facility. The concept for suning.com is ethereal - like the internet - inspired by the mist on the purple mountain.

Campus Placemaking NBBJ’s design for Suning Headquarters began with the vision to complete the Suning campus with a focus on the central gathering space. For the larger Suning campus, NBBJ’s design takes advantage of the opportunity to locate key program elements to become commonly held assets to the larger campus. This includes outdoor space placed to the south of the site completing the open space diagram that the Headquarters began. Finally the VIP lobby and exhibition facility is placed on axis to the central plaza where it serves as the focal point to the entire Suning.com Headquarters campus.

The city of Busan, South Korea, exists in the land formed between the ocean and the mountains. This relationship is the foundation for the design of the Yong Ho bay Towers and cultural complex. The design takes into consideration the natural elements and physical forces that surround this infill site at the waters’ edge in Busan. The project’s primary program calls for 15,000 units of housing and about 30,000m2 of retail and cultural programming at the podium levels on a site with an area of 51,430m2. Waves, the energy of the oceans, forms the inspiration for the podium while the mountains, upheaval of the land to the sky, inspires the soaring iconic towers as they also reach for the sky.

The Tingyi Holding Corporation’s Master Kong is the largest Taiwanese retail brand in China and are preparing to build a 2.5 million sf corporate campus which includes Office and R&D for each of their three retail products, plus training facilities, auditoriums, interactive exhibition, housing, and conferencing in Tianjin. Master Kong is a food and beverage company. Food and Water become inspirational drivers for the organization of capus assets. The campus workplace is a direct influence of it’s core business - noodle, water and cookie - each providing a strong corporate identity.

The 145,000 sf federal courthouse contains two Appellate Courts, and one Magistrate court, judge’s chambers, Parole facilities, US Attorneys, and US Marshals. Making Justice Visible is a substantial challenge that we face with the 21st century courthouses. The design addresses this challenge by highlighting the courtrooms and making them sacrosant. The design addresses the need for local resonance with the people of Montana while upholding the dignity and substantive presence of the federal judicial system.

Valley Medical Center is a prominent healthcare organization that serves the Renton area. The original campus in 1950 was designed by Edward Durell Stone and has heavily influenced subsequent development on campus. The covington emergency department is VMC’s first attempt at a free standing satellite project, and hence their first opportunity of creating a new campus architecture. The design for covington is based on two bars of simple frames that focus onto nature. The space inbetween the bars has a continuous skylight that brings nature inside. The frames also act as beacons of light for the community.

The Southcentral Foundation’s Primary Care Clinic 3 is located on the Alaska Native Medical Campus in Anchorage, AK. PCC 3 is a 3 story, 75,000 sf facility in addition to the current 2-story, 83,000 square feet facility (PCC II). The massing and materials of the primary care center were carefully designed to allow the new three-story addition to successfully integrate with the existing two-story building in a way that sustains the institutional identity. The three-story-high “lens element” activates the enclosed space between the existing primary care center and the new addition.
