J.T.Unger Urban Studio Sketches : Ideal
The lesson that I took from John T. Unger is that of seeing opportunity in the elements deemed “useless” by contemporary society and using them. This ideal will include human, or social waste, known as the “homeless”. Those who have nothing to lose, have everything to gain. Ideally, Unger and a few masters of building will join with a few willing to be apprentices, and myself, already an apprentice. We will find a “useless” warehouse and bring it to life, so that it may thrive as an organism within the community, not as a parasite off of the community. Those who dwell here will work, learn, and eat here. Those who wish to dwell here can make a home for themselves. We will teach them how. We will have a plan for the new walls, so that we may make them from the old walls. The wooden roof will become furniture, for both the studio and residences. The new roof will adapt to the seasonal changes, and its trusses made from the old columns and local scrap. Windshields with PV film scrap will also capture rain water. Design Strategies
Global Irridescence is plentyfull year round, therefore, completely daylit buildings are possible. Shading on the Southern facade should be supple with overhangs 40 degrees off the facade using the bottom of the window as the angle vertex. Eastern and Western facades will need vertical shading to reduce glare. The gallery in Storrs is an excellent example of controlling Western glare, while the studios get blinded each afternoon. The North facade should be properly glazed with at least 80% window for each wall. The Architectural Resource Center in Storrs is a good example of an appropriate proportion.
