ORRELL RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB OUR JOURNEY

ORRELL RUGBY UNION CLUB Orrell, in Wigan is an area with the strongest of rugby union traditions. Founded in 1927, the club was in the top-tier of rugby union from 1986 to 1997 – winning the Lancashire Cup many times between 1972 and 1997. After a venture into professional rugby, the Club lost their ground and reformed as an amateur rugby union club in 2007. The Club has come a long way in the past 10 years – with a thriving and growing junior section with teams ranging from U7s to U16s and two open age sides. In addition, the recently established Touch Rugby team is achieving great results with their 02 accreditation. The Club also has two girl’s teams U13s and U15s and are about to launch a women's team something we have never had before – plus a great set of members and an active social calendar. All of this despite having something of a nomadic existence around the various school facilities in the area!

When Winstanley Park Cricket Club was offered a number of options to secure their longer term playing needs, they wanted to involve other sports and so the partnership with Orrell RUFC was born and the joint venture of Orrell and Winstanley Community Sports Club was created. The clubs have signed a 99-year lease for a new home on a 13-acre site, situated next to Winstanley College, which will provide a permanent home for both organisations and an opportunity to boost their thriving junior sections. Playing a key role in the local community, the new facility will be available to other community groups, with a particular focus on providing a sporting outlet for children and will feature two rugby pitches and a cricket pitch with clubhouse and changing rooms. Our fundraising team are working hard to put in place lots of new ideas to raise monies for our new home. We have Our Vision-Our Field of Dreams Trust Fund; our annual golf day and club dinner dance and we are looking at other events we can add to our calendar. In addition, we are looking at grants and lottery funding as well as creating our own crowdfunding site. We are also seeking sponsorship from the local community and businesses.

Winstanley Park Cricket Club

Our Journey

WINSTANLEY PARK CRICKET CLUB Founded in 1878 and believed to be one of the oldest sports clubs in the Wigan area, Winstanley Park Cricket Club ground is located in the north west corner of Winstanley Park in Billinge.

Until April 1907, Winstanley Park played only friendly games but in conjunction with eight other local clubs, they became a founder member of the West Lancashire League, winning the Salter Cup in 1910. After the Great War, the land owner, Mr Bankes, authorised use of the ground again for cricket and the club was reformed. The club won The Salter Cup again in 1931 and the Farnworth Cup in 1935. Further league transitions took place and in 1963, the club moved from the WLL to play in the South West Lancashire Association until 1983. In 1990, the club joined the Southport and District Amateur Cricket League, where it still plays today. The 2013 season saw the 1st X1 in Premier League B, the 2ndX1 in Division 2, a Sunday X1 in the West Lancashire League plus 4 junior teams (boys and girls) turning out for the club. When Winstanley Park Cricket Club was offered a number of options by the landowner, Mr Bankes, to secure their longer term playing needs, the Committee decided they needed to be more accessible in order to grow. The Club also wanted to involve other sports and so the partnership with Orrell RUFC was born and the joint venture of Orrell and Winstanley Community Sports Club was created. The clubs have signed a 99-year lease for a new home on a 13-acre site, situated next to Winstanley College, which will provide a permanent home for both organisations and an opportunity to boost their thriving junior sections. Playing a key role in the local community, the new location will be available to other community groups, with a particular focus on providing a sporting outlet for children and will feature two rugby pitches and a cricket pitch with clubhouse and changing rooms.

The Benefits

The Benefits Not only will the new facility provide a new home for Orrell RUFC and Winstanley Park Cricket Club but it will also offer a much needed sport and community facility in an area where there is a very strong traditional need. It will:  Continue the long tradition of sport in Wigan by providing a local hub for cricket and rugby.  Enable the cricket club to continue to be eligible for affiliation to the Southport & District League and provide a platform to play at the highest possible levels in the future within the LCB league structure.  Be self-sufficient (once built) by offering facilities that can be hired for training, meetings, community activities and private functions.  Provide employment and volunteering opportunities. One of the many hidden benefits to participating in sport and recreation is the way it helps connect people in communities. Sport and recreational clubs are often the hub of community life and ❖ Create a more cohesive and sustainable community by bringing people together and providing opportunities for social interaction/inclusion. ❖ Help build a stronger, healthier and happier community by offering new opportunities for local people (young and old) to participate in sport and recreational activities. ❖ Contribute to the reduction in youth offending, anti-social behaviour and crime by creating opportunities to take part in sporting activities, learn new skills, develop confidence and enhance self-esteem. In addition, as part of the planning approval, the development will also address a number of local concerns such as: ✓ Car parking around the cricket field by providing a designated car park. ✓ Reducing speed (and improving safety) by relocating the 30mph zone ✓ Maintaining the green area for the 99-year period of the lease.

The Project in Brief

The Project in Brief Overview Two new rugby pitches and a cricket pitch are planned alongside a clubhouse/pavilion, practice area and car parking. Modern design techniques will encourage participation and the facility’s proximity to Winstanley College will act as a sporting hub on their doorstep. Demand and Support • There is a combined membership of over 500 people. • There is a population of over 48,000 within a two- mile radius of Orrell, Billinge, Winstanley and Pemberton. • Proposals have received positive support from the local authority, local MPs, the RFU and ECB and many local user groups. • The steering group made up of representatives from both clubs is supported by NPS Group (Wigan) "Sport occupies a unique place in Wigan's history and culture. Orrell RUFC and Winstanley Cricket Club are two clubs with a proud history and exciting future. That's why I am passionate in supporting and helping them realise their 'Field of Dreams' and the opportunities this will provide for our young people." Yvonne Fovargue MP Labour Member for Makerfield

Further Consultation Now that planning consent has been obtained, the steering group plans to conduct further research regarding the demand for additional community uses, community groups and activities.

Clubhouse/Pavilion Design • The Pitches and Clubhouse will be built in 3 separate phases. • The pitches and clubhouse/pavilion will support all-year round sport, catering primarily for cricket and rugby. • Phase 1 will in include site and habitat investigation. • The Cricket Pitch and 2 Rugby Pitches will be constructed during Phase 1 with dual use changing rooms. • Phase 2 adds a further two rugby changing rooms with a central corridor and lobby linking the extension. • Phase 3 will see the completion of the Clubhouse with the social space & meeting room added to the building. Simple Design with Enhanced Landscaping • The Pavilion design offers a simple building footprint • Traditional design building with modern concepts & materials • Traditionally built pitched roof ridgeline • Layout and proportions of changing spaces accord with RFU design • Landscaping will provide for and enhance the local ecological habitat. • The club outlook will benefit from the beautiful views over the surrounding countryside.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? WHAT WE NEED

HOW WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GET THIS BALL ROLLING Our members, players, former players and even our Mini and Junior Section are doing their bit to help raise the funds for our new home. We have an active social calendar and we have created a number of new fundraising activities to help us get the ball rolling and achieve the dream of our own home and a community facility that can be used by all. We have launched our fundraising campaign “Our Vision – Our Field of Dreams” whereby our members can donate to a Trust Fund we have set up; we will be introducing a crowdfunding platform and our Fundraising Team are also looking for any grants/lottery funding, etc. that may be available to us. But we can’t do it all by ourselves and we are asking for your help. The project is to be built in 3 phases:  The Implementation Phase (pitches) - £432,000  Phase I Clubhouse/Pavilion - £1.3 million  Phase 2/3 Clubhouse/Pavilion- £399,000

Both clubs have invested a significant amount into the project and are now looking to raise even more funds to start Phase I of the project.

And this is really where we need your help. Our first target is to raise money to complete Phase 1 – the development of the pitches and we are looking to raise partnership funding of approximately £230,000. That’s a lot of money for a small club to raise but we know we can do it with your help. Donate today (or tomorrow) and even a small amount would help us start to build our Vision and help build our Field of Dreams. This could be something as simple as “sponsor a square yard” or by just simply making a donation.

In return, we can offer you access to all our members through via our website, emails, social media, newsletters and our annual fixture card. We also run several promotional events throughout the year, where we can also promote your business and where you will be given priority booking. In addition, we can also offer you opportunities such as: ❖ Prominent exterior signage around the current home ground exterior and pitch, incorporating your company logo & club name. ❖ Your company logo on the club strip. ❖ Or a flexible package designed to suit your own marketing needs
