Personal Tutor

Academic and Personal Support

When you first come to Winstanley you will be welcomed by your Personal Tutor at induction. You will stay with the same Personal Tutor for two years and will get to know each other well.

At Winstanley, there is a very strong focus on developing the full potential of every individual student, both academic and personal. There are times when you may need support to help you achieve your goals. This could be from your teacher, your Personal Tutor, a Study Support Tutor or an Independent Learning Assistant (ILA).

There is a Senior Tutor who is in charge of a group of students (eg AS) and acts similarly to a ‘Head of Year’ at school. It will be your Personal Tutor who guides you through College, watching attendance, encouraging progress and guiding on choices for the future. Personal Tutors should be the first person you go to for advice and support, especially if things go wrong. Students see their Personal Tutor in their tutorial sessions but you can also drop by their office for a one to one chat or email them if you are in difficulties. At any time, parents are encouraged to contact the Personal Tutor to discuss their son’s/daughter’s progress but there is a formal opportunity to do this every year at Parents’ Consultation days.

The ILAs provide one to one or small group academic study support to help boost achievement. Whatever your ability, the ILAs can give you that extra help when you need it by providing you with individualised support. The Study Support team also provides support for students with specific learning differences, dyslexia or dyspraxia for example, and for students with disabilities. Support is designed to meet individual needs and assessment is completed by specialist tutors. To find out more, please contact Linda Jones, the Study Support Manager: linda.jones@winstanley.ac.uk or 01695 633244.

Attendance is very important at College and it is here too that you would come to explain absence to the Attendance Officer – who may also contact parents should there be a query or concern.

Student Services is the main point of call for just about any question that you may have. We offer a one stop shop for all your needs, whether this is attendance, work experience, lockers or university applications.

Some students may find starting College a little overwhelming and our aim is to make your transition as smooth as possible. You can access these services in person or via email to the relevant person. This is only a selection of the numerous facilities available within Student Services so please come and visit us during induction week to find out more.

We also organise all the student transport here and can offer you advice on permits, routes and costs. Staff are also able to give advice on what assistance is available to help with the financial demands of studying at College.

Celebrating the achievements of Winstanley students Every April, Winstanley College is delighted to celebrate the achievements of students with a series of awards in a variety of categories. This last year, proud parents, staff, governors and, of course, students, gathered at Winstanley College on Thursday 23rd April, for the annual Awards Evening. Special guests included local MP Yvonne Fovargue and former Winstanley student Richard Lawson, who has gone on to have a successful career with the BBC. Richard presented the Alumni Awards to exceptional students Saffron Lowsley, Anya Lyon-Fraser, Bethan Critchley and Jade Westhead. These students will now benefit from having their own alumni contact, within their chosen fields, which will help to open doors and create networks.

“The awards evening is a fantastic way to celebrate the amazing achievements of just a few of our students. Some have excelled academically; some have demonstrated outstanding sporting prowess while still others have overcome significant personal challenges or contributed much to the wider life of the College. Thanks to all parents and families for the support they give which is vital to the success of our students. And of course, we recognise the ceaseless care and hard work of Winstanley staff in ensuring that our students have a chance to shine.”

We love hearing from former students and finding out about their success since leaving college. Our strong alumni links also mean that current students can benefit from their experience and industry contacts.

Tom Dixon and Paul Moss Tom and Paul left Winstanley in 2009 and, after completing degrees in Zoology and Chemistry, at their respective universities (Sheffield and Durham) they reunited to set up The HandleBards. Their unique theatre group combines a love of cycling with a passion for performing and producing. Paul, who attended St Peter’s High School in Orrell before Winstanley, explains: “Tom and I met at college and were involved in all the extra-curricular performing arts activities. Even though we both went on to complete science related degrees, the thought of working in a lab did not appeal to either of us. We wanted to set up a business and HandleBards represented everything we loved”. Tom, who attended Glenburn High in Skelmersdale, added: “Performing, producing and cycling as a career is a dream come true. We have toured the country performing in some great venues, schools and theatre groups and, next month, we are taking HandleBards to India!”

Why should I study Computer Science at Winstanley College?

What subjects combine well with Computer Science?

Computer Science is an exciting and challenging new subject that has, at its core, the study of computational thinking, increasingly regarded as an essential skill for the 21st Century. Studying Computer Science will allow you to develop the ability to think logically, algorithmically and recursively to analyse problems and to gain experience of writing computer programs to solve such problems.

As there is a strong link between the two subjects and Computer Science does include significant mathematical content, we recommend that Computer Science students also study Mathematics. Together these two subjects create a good foundation that combines well with a whole range of other subjects including Physics, other sciences and Economics, as well as other less “obvious combinations, for example with Art for those interested in a career in Architecture. Some students also choose to combine it with ICT to gain every advantage for pursuing a career in the IT industry. Computational thinking is an important life skill which is useful in a wide range of contexts.

What will I study? You will learn to understand the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science such as abstraction and decomposition as well as learning to express the laws and processes of computation using mathematics. You will learn about software and systems development, hardware and networks and gain an awareness of the technologies involved. You will develop an understanding of computer systems and an appreciation of the impact and consequences of computer use on society. You will apply the principles of computation to design and develop computer programs to solve problems, gaining experience of programming using procedural, object-oriented and functional programming approaches.

How will I learn? You will learn in a supportive and friendly environment, working independently and in small groups to develop your knowledge of computer systems and understanding of computational thinking skills. Since the theory element of the course accounts for more than 50% of the qualification, it is taught in a non-IT classroom using a range of resources and activities to facilitate your learning. You will also practise designing and writing programs to solve problems, working largely at your own pace, in a specialist air-conditioned computer room. The coursework component ensures that your individual needs and interests are met by giving you the freedom to set and complete your own challenges, with support from your teacher.

What do I need to study this subject? Computer Science is a challenging and mathematical A-level so it is recommended that you have strong mathematical skills with at least Grade B at GCSE, as well as experience and knowledge of computer systems and programming gained through either a GCSE in Computer Science or equivalent independent study.

Enrichment Activities Studying Computer Science at Winstanley however, is more than just about passing exams. Students are encouraged to take part in a range of additional enrichment activities which have included visits to local universities and presentations by guest speakers and ex-students. The Code Club meets on a weekly basis to give individuals and small groups the opportunity to devise and work on their own projects thereby extending their experience and skills. Students can also volunteer to become a Class Representative attending half termly meetings to discuss and get involved in departmental matters such as the re-design of the Intranet site. Students also help out in the Department at College Open Evenings.

Future careers Studying Computer Science can lead onto a number of career options including any branch of Computer Science, Software Development, Network Systems, Information Support Services and Interactive Media and Web Design. Previous students have taken degrees at university in, for example, Computer Science, Computer Games Software Development, as well as one of the many branches of Engineering including software, civil and mechanical.

Subjects that you believe are more academic than others are not necessarily A-levels that will lead you to succeed. This is a course which provides a valuable stepping-stone into a vast range of dance /performance related career-pathways. We have contacts with performers and practitioners in the industry, major dance schools and universities in order to provide up-to-the-minute careers advice. Many of our former students are working in the industry now and we always appreciate their return to the college.

Why should I study Economics at Winstanley College?

Subjects Combinations

Studying economics raises fantastic career opportunities (you can gain work experience at a top Investment Bank) and studying the subject at Winstanley enables you to learn the theory in an applied and exciting way. Economics is the study of how societies create wealth and income and some of the unintended consequences of the pursuit of economic growth. We run a series of interactive challenges. We have an outstanding record of entering and winning the Young Enterprise Company Programme, enabling you to study at first hand the importance of entrepreneurship. If speculating on the stock market is more your thing, how about the Student Investor Challenge, where we have taken Winstanley teams to the National Final? We have a very close long term relationship with local (Manchester Business School) and national universities and a range of high quality local employers, so studying Economics here will give you outstanding opportunities for your career progression at 18. Economics is a hugely respected, fast growing course that is taught by experienced examiners in the subject who will tailor their teaching to individual needs. Economics internet and intranet resources are extensive. If you really are excited by the subject there are opportunities to join “Economist reading workshops”, undertake extended project assignments (on themes including the credit crunch, privatisation and China’s economic record) or study local businesses and national economic institutions based in London or visits to either New York, Brussels, Barcelona or Germany. We work closely with NACUE (National Association of College and Universities Entrepreneurs) and former students have gained jobs in the Bank of England, top Investment Banks and become internet start up entrepreneurs.

In the past, economics always “went well” with maths. Certainly if you are considering an economics degree later on you should also study maths. Today, however, the maths content on the economics A-level course is small. Economics, because it is so very career related, can be studied alongside anything, but it goes well with english, politics, history, law, business, geography, philosophy, maths, computing and the sciences. International Economics courses are growing in popularity so it can be studied alongside languages.

“I was already really interested in economics and so being taught a completely new subject was fascinating”

So what is the subject about?

As a highly regarded academic discipline it does have its own key terms, diagrams and academic challenges. Whereas business studies looks at how companies deal with problems as they arise e.g. the recession, economics goes into far more depth about the actual root causes of these problems. From significant oil price rises to the economics of the floods, recession, stock market turmoil, pollution, housing booms, bank bailouts, motorway road pricing, wage determination, whether you are better or worse off with a Living Wage, or the economics of £9000 per year University tuition fees, economics goes into detail outlining the theory that has been discussed by thinkers for centuries. It can open many pathways to a challenging, fascinating, stimulating and often well paid career.

High school: Bedford

A-levels:

English Literature English Language Media

I have enjoyed the increased independence this year, compared to last year. I liked the choice I was given regarding the texts I would be studying for coursework, particularly the chosen poet, Tony Harrison. I have also incredibly enjoyed the drama study of Shakespeare’s play, ‘The Tempest’. I also returned to my high school seeking teaching work experience with the Head of the English Department. Later this month I will also be travelling to Stratford-upon-Avon with our English department to attend the seminar on ‘The Tempest’ and ‘Doctor Faustus’ (our exam texts this year). I have received an unconditional offer to study English at Keele University, but have placed it as my insurance to the University of Exeter campus in Cornwall. I decided to come to Winstanley College from word of mouth regarding the college’s impressive reputation.

Prospectus 2016 - 2017

Why study English Literature at Winstanley? Studying English Literature can offer you a whole range of vital skills such as reading critically, writing analytically and responding creatively. We encourage group work and class discussion – a feature of the department which many students tell us is particularly enjoyable and worthwhile. English Literature A-level will give you an excellent grounding in a whole range of literary texts. You’ll have the chance to study traditional canonical literature such as Shakespeare and the Romantic poets alongside more contemporary works. You’ll be encouraged to see the connections between different literary texts, providing you with an excellent basis for studying English at university. One of the most notable features of the course is that you will have the chance to work on your own coursework pieces, choosing your own title and incorporating your own choice of texts. This will give you endless possibilities for individual work, and as teachers we enjoy working with you individually to help you develop your ideas.

Beyond A-level Students who opt for English Literature go on to study for the widest possible range of degrees. Many go on to study for the many English Literature or Combined English degrees available. In addition, many students use their English Literature A-level as

a stepping stone to degrees in such diverse subjects as Maths and Medicine, Japanese and Interior Design! It’s hard to find any walk of life where clear, accurate verbal and written communication skills in critical reading and analysis are not valued.

What will I study? You’ll study poetry and drama from a range of different writers. You’ll study plays by Shakespeare, Webster and Tennessee Williams, and poetry by writers as different as John Donne, Carol Ann Duffy and Geoffrey Chaucer. You’ll write a coursework essay on a selection of prose texts-including work from the 21st century. Recent texts chosen have included works by F Scott Fitzgerald, Charlotte Bronte, Ian McEwan and Sarah Waters. You’ll also learn to analyse texts from a particular literary period, which gives us the chance to study a whole range of texts and extracts of our choosing.

Learning in detail about film, finding out more about the industry, the money and why the film-makers make the decisions they do has been very interesting. It has allowed me to analyse the films I watch in a new light which enriches the experience. Film studies has been a good balance between practical coursework and written exams and with great teachers and resources, I’d totally recommend it. I have been involved with Winstanley TV; presenting and editing. I have also filmed and edited hockey matches and Winter Wonderland. Do what you enjoy most, you’ll do better in those subjects and have a better time at college, but also try and keep your future options open. I joined Winstanley for the media and film resources-mainly the studio and Winstanley TV.

Scene 1. Interior. A Room. Day (A Man is sitting behind a desk in a room whose walls are covered in film posters. He is writing. There is a knock at the door.) MAN Come in. (The door opens. A young male and young female student enter the room. They look nervously around and walk hesitantly up to the table.) MAN Yes, can I help you? (They stare at each other. The female student turns to the man.) FEMALE STUDENT We’d like to know something about Film Studies, please. MAN Certainly, pull up a chair. (They sit down and lean forward expectantly.) MAN Well, the basic outline of the course is to look at all aspects of cinema from the latest Hollywood blockbuster to the best of World Cinema. MALE STUDENT Are there a lot of foreign films on the course? MAN There are some but mostly in second year. In first year, the emphasis is very much on British and American Cinema so you’ll be studying quite a few films that you might already be familiar with. FEMALE STUDENT What films do you look at? MAN French New Wave cinema from the 1950s and 60s, Hitchcock’s classic thriller, Vertigo and everything from silent films to The Hurt Locker and Avatar for the final topic. MALE STUDENT Is there a lot of writing? MAN There is some essay-writing and note-taking, a fair amount of personal research, a great many film screenings and some opportunities for hands-on-film-making. FEMALE STUDENT What does it lead to? MAN For most of our students, university, either to study some film or media-related course or another one of the Arts and Humanities family of subjects.

winstanley college

MALE STUDENT Do you think it’s for me? MAN It is if you are interested in all aspects of cinema and are keen to learn more and expand your knowledge and appreciation of film. It’s also for those who enjoy personal research and keeping up to date with what’s happening in the film world. FEMALE STUDENT Do you have to be a film buff to really get into it? MAN Not at all. Being a buff is neither a good nor a bad thing. Some students who choose it are very knowledgeable when they begin the course but others just have a general interest and a willingness to know more. Most people have some interest and knowledge about cinema and this course enables you to build on that and follow your own enthusiasm in parts. MALE STUDENT What subjects go well with Film Studies? MAN As I said a moment ago… Arts and Humanities subjects tend to be the most common partners: Media Studies, English, Performing Arts, History, Business Studies, Psychology, that kind of subject, although we do get the odd mathematician and scientist. FEMALE STUDENT Do you go on any trips or visits? MAN Yes, in the past, we have gone to Los Angeles, New York, Rome, London and the Berlin Film Festival. Any more questions? MALE AND FEMALE STUDENT Where do we sign up? (Fade to black as the Hallelujah Chorus plays on the soundtrack)

I have been on trips to Heysham and Ingleton Falls as part of my Geology studies. Additionally, I went to Malham as part of my Geography studies and I also went to Italy in the summer. I have been part of the L6 department, representing Geology at Open Evenings. I am looking to study Geology at either Southampton or Manchester University.

What will I study? • Plate tectonics and its relevance to the landscape and scenery around us • Earthquakes and volcanoes • The earth and its structures, folds, faults and unconformities • Different types of rocks and minerals • Plant and animal life through geological time • Natural disasters and attempts at their management, such as Haiti earthquake, the 2010 eruption of the Icelandic Eyjafjallajokull volcano, the landslides in Sichuan and tsunamis in Sendai, Japan.

Further afield, the residential visits to Arran and Italy are very popular and rewarding. There are visits to the Natural History Museum, Manchester Museum and University and occasional lectures by visiting speakers, current and past geology students.

Careers in Geology There is a wide range of interesting career opportunities open to geology graduates such as disaster management, hydrogeology, geo-conservation, mining and quarrying and civil engineering industries, geophysics, geochemistry, government supported scientific establishments, geological surveys, specialist geological consultants and research companies and teaching. I would advise students to choose subjects that they are passionate about – they will enjoy their time at college more if they enjoy their subjects and will meet like-minded people who will become friends. ICT Geography Maths Physics I enjoyed the independence of coursework, it allowed me to really research into a company and create a system that suits their needs, which is what I would be doing in a working environment. It really gave me an insight into what I might be doing in the future. ICT allows me to see the importance of computers in the work place. College organised for me to have work experience in Wigan Council offices. This showed me the database system that the council operates (an Oracle object-relational management system). Maths (particularly logic) is a crucial skill to the understanding of computer science. I also visited a local primary school to introduce the children to simple IT solutions (Microsoft PowerPoint). I’m going to study Computer Science at either the University of Manchester (firm – conditional offer) or the University of Salford (insurance – unconditional offer)

Prospectus 2016 - 2017

Why should I study ICT at Winstanley? Whilst jobs are disappearing in many sectors of the economy, IT is one of the few industries where highly skilled and qualified IT staff are actually in demand. There are many career opportunities for both females and males. Given this, and the fact that IT is fundamental to the way we all live today, shouldn’t you be considering taking ICT at Winstanley? Even though a GCSE in ICT/Computing, or equivalent, might be an advantage, as long as you have a genuine interest in IT, and you are motivated and committed, then anyone is welcome to study this subject.

What will I study? ICT is used in all aspects of everyday life such as in the home, education, health and in business. Examining in detail the information systems which operate in these sectors, you will focus on the capabilities and limitations of IT systems; the quality of data and the information produced using a variety of different packages and including its presentation format; health and safety of the user; the concept of business modelling using spreadsheets; HCI and the user’s requirements; use of the Internet; networking; management information systems; management of change; databases and the systems development life cycle. In addition to theory in both years, you will also carry out a practical coursework project under the supervision of your tutor, where you will research an existing small business of your choice and using both ICT hardware and software applications, provide a solution to a business problem. The project allows students to be creative and use a variety of programmes to develop solutions using skills which are transferable in many other situations and contexts.

How will I learn? You will learn in a supportive and friendly environment, and be encouraged to actively develop your independent learning skills, an important skill-set for university and beyond. Since the theory element of the course accounts for 60% of the qualification, it is taught in a non-IT classroom using a range of resources and

activities to facilitate your learning. It is therefore important that you develop a regular pattern of self-study outside the class in order to be successful in the exam. The coursework unit will ensure that your individual needs and interests are met by giving you the freedom to choose your own project in negotiation with your tutor, as well as providing you with the opportunity to demonstrate your individual IT skills. In completing your project, you will work largely at your own pace with your tutor providing support whenever you need it. The department’s facilities are always available at breaks and lunchtimes for IT/Computing students to use for completing coursework projects, homework tasks and revising theory or to simply practise your skills outside class time. Furthermore, there are additional IT facilities for you to access throughout the day and these are provided in The Islands and the IT Drop-in Centre.

Subject combinations Though traditionally linked to Business Studies, ICT combines well with a range of other subjects including English, Media, Art and Design, Graphics, Photography, as well as Computing. However, students will find that the knowledge gained and skills developed are useful in many contexts and not only in enhancing the presentation of any coursework, but when completing assignments and the final dissertation at university as well as beyond and into employment.

Enrichment activities Students in the department are also encouraged to take part in enrichment activities which have included careers events with representatives from local universities and businesses, attending presentations from guest speakers and ex-students and a trip to see the IT systems at Manchester Airport. Peer mentoring is also encouraged amongst the U6th to help L6th students who may require additional support with theoretical elements of the course. Students can also volunteer to become a Class Representative, attending half termly meetings to discuss and get involved in departmental matters such as the re-design of the Intranet site. Students also help out in the Department at College Open Evenings.

Future careers ICT is particularly useful in careers such as teaching, journalism and publishing, and all aspects of the media. For those students wishing to progress further, there are degrees available in Information Communication Technology (some now with QTS for Secondary Teaching), Information Systems Design, Business Information Technology, Information Business Management, and the new ITMB degree which combines Business Management and IT with project planning and was designed in conjunction with employers. Previous students have also taken degrees in Software Development, Computing/Computer Science, and Broadcast & Media Production. More recently, students have secured places on a number of prestigious IT Apprenticeship Schemes.

Law History English Literature Spanish Law gives you a much broader outlook on current political and economic problems in society – I thoroughly enjoyed the explanations of these issues. Law is a subject which also encourages you to become interested in current affairs, which in turn affects your learning. I especially enjoyed learning about how the law is so subject to interpretation. I took part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and also completed a work placement at Wigan Magistrate’s Court. I was elected as President of the Law Society and also took part in a mooting competition and a mock trial competition. I was also part of the winning team for the internal debating competition at college. I have approached Cambridge University to study Law as my first choice.

Why should I study Law at Winstanley?

Subject combinations and careers

The law is a set of rules which shapes politics, the economy and society; they are usually enforced through a number of institutions. In this context it is clear that studying A-level Law is not only for the wannabe lawyer! You should certainly be considering Law if you want to study an exciting and challenging subject which is relevant to everyday life. This two year course is divided into four modules. The first year modules are the important foundations of any further legal studies providing a broad appreciation of the law and its functions in society. This knowledge is then built on in second year with an in-depth look into Criminal Law. You will learn how criminal liability can be established and how someone can be ‘guilty’ of many criminal offences including murder, GBH, and robbery. Law is an evolving subject. It therefore requires a willingness to ‘get involved’, for example, by watching legal documentaries and reading a quality newspaper. As the A-level is based on written examinations, it is essential that you have the ability to write essays and the intelligence to understand and use detailed material as well as the patience to learn it. However, it is very rare for any student to have studied Law before; therefore, we pride ourselves on our ‘user-friendly’ introduction to the subject which greatly assists a smooth transition from GCSE to A-level.

Law can be studied alongside most subjects, but it goes particularly well with Politics, English, History, Economics and Foreign Languages. Obviously a considerable number of students who choose A-level Law do so with the intention of entering into the legal profession. However, it can also lead to exciting careers in the Civil Service, Public Administration and Management, the Police, Banking, the Armed Forces and Social Work. Those who do wish to pursue the legal path will be well advised about the options of doing either a law degree or another undergraduate degree followed by the CPE conversion course.

Enrichment To enhance your learning, there are many exciting activities connected to the law which you can be involved in. Visits to the local Crown and Magistrates Courts help students to learn about the court system, whilst there is the Mock Trial competition for any budding barristers. Guest speakers and student-led debates are also frequently arranged in college. For those who are keen on a career in Europe there is a trip to Paris and Brussels to visit European Institutions, as well as our very popular visits to Washington and New York. Closer to home, there is the chance to visit a local prison and the Houses of Parliament.

What will I study? The court and appeal systems, lay people and the legal profession. The different types of law and how they are made including Acts of Parliament, delegated legislation and judicial precedent. An in-depth look at homicide, non-fatal offences and offences against property and all the defences to these offences. Investigating and analysing law and morals, law and justice and the extent to which judges create law.

Maths Further Maths Physics Economics The aspects that I have enjoyed the most are applying maths to real life situations, problem solving, watching demonstrations of new concepts, and thinking about things you’d never thought about before like fundamental particles and e=mc^2 which have proved useful to everyday life like nuclear fission for making energy. I have been on Oxford and Cambridge trips, STEM days at Manchester University and a Jeff Forshaw lecture at Bolton School. Why should I study Mathematics at Winstanley?

What will I study?

The main reason to study Mathematics at A-level is because you really enjoy Maths! You should also be keen to find solutions to problems, be happy to take on a challenge and a solid grasp of algebra will be vital from the start.

Mathematics (Single)

All the teachers in the department are subject specialists and are very enthusiastic about mathematics. The department has seven experienced examiners and a wealth of knowledge in how best to prepare students for the examinations. The department prides itself upon the fact that it has developed its own teaching materials for all modules on the courses. These consist of booklets and self-marking solutions for all past papers and assignments. These factors all contribute to our excellent results.

Core 2: Sequences, Series, Binomial Expansion, Trigonometry, Logarithms, Indices Differentiation and Integration

Individual support to students is provided by all staff and one-to-one support through our Mentoring Scheme is also available. Mathematics Enrichment activities are thriving and numerous competitions take place both internally throughout the year and externally through challenges offered by the UK Maths Trust and Liverpool University.

Choice of Applied Unit: Mechanics 1 (Kinematics in 1D & 2D, Statics & Forces, Momentum, Dynamics, Connected Particles and Motion Under Gravity) OR Decision 1 (Basic Algorithms, Graphs and Networks, Minimum Connectors, Dijkstra’s Algorithm, Matchings, Chinese Postman Problem, Travelling Salesperson Problem and Linear Programming)

Beyond A-level

Mathematics (Further) In the first year you will study Core 1, Core 2, Further Pure 1, Statistics 1, Decision 1 and Decision 2

Mathematics can lead to a wide choice of courses at University. Obvious career routes include teaching, business, accountancy, engineering, medicine, geography, psychology, computing and all the sciences. However, there are many other diverse areas where mathematical skills are also seen as valuable.

Why Further Mathematics? If mathematics is your favourite subject and/or you want to study Mathematics/Engineering at university, you should seriously consider also studying further mathematics. Since mathematics is such an extensive subject, it is not possible to cover all the topics in the single mathematics course. Studying further mathematics will enable you to cover more topics and extend your knowledge and understanding of mathematics.

Core 1: Surds, Quadratics, Co-ordinate Geometry, Circles, Differentiation and Integration

Statistics 1: Representation of Data, Correlation & Regression, Probability, Binomial Distribution, Normal Distribution and Confidence Intervals Core 3 and 4: Both units build upon the Algebra from Core 1 and 2

In the second year you will study six more modules, Core 3, Core 4, Further Pure 3, Statistics 2, Mechanics 1 and Mechanics 2, which will take you up to a full A-level in mathematics and a full A-level in further mathematics. There is also the opportunity to self-teach extra modules, FP2 and FP4, using department resources.

I’ve enjoyed the relevance to the real world: things learned in class deepen understanding of Media which people consume every day such as TV, Film etc. So it’s further than just gaining marks in an exam. The advice I would give students when selecting A-levels is choose what – primarily – contributes to your long term plan, or maybe even enjoy! After college I intend to go self-employed full time in the work I do currently around my college time – photographic and video work. I chose to study at Winstanley because Its reputation proceeded it, as well as wanting to break free of the high-school surroundings of Sixth Form.

Why should I study Media at all?

Enrichment activities

From waking up in the morning to turning off the light at night, the background noise and foreground imagery of our daily lives is dominated by the presence of the mass media. Media Studies explores the relationships we form with the media, analyses how they are made and how they operate. The course is very “hands on” and combines theory and practice in a straight fifty-fifty split.

There is the opportunity to develop production skills with Winstanley TV, the college’s own TV station housed within the department, as well as develop your own production ideas. There are also frequent guest speakers from the world of professional media. Foreign trips have included Los Angeles, New York, Rome, London and the Berlin Film Festival.

So, what will I study? Half of your time will be spent in practical media production producing a media product in video, print, radio or web design. This could be shooting and editing your opening to a feature film or pop video, making trailers, taking photos and using Photoshop to produce magazines - or how about getting out on the streets to record opinions for radio programmes? Other topics include a study of the film industry, the regulation of the internet and films and analysis of TV programmes.

So, that’s the course but why study it at Winstanley? You will be taught by well-qualified staff who have many years experience of teaching the subject and working as examiners and moderators for this syllabus and this exam board. You will have access to a wide range of audio-visual technology to enable you to produce high quality productions. These include digital stills and video cameras, a drop-in computer area for editing and DTP, a television studio, radio facility and control room for studio production, even a camera crane for those spectacular aerial shots. Excellent technical support from a full-time departmental technician and personal tuition during the production process are available.

What will an A-level in Media Studies lead to? The majority of our students will go on to university to study a related degree course such as Media Studies, Media Production, Journalism, Media Technology, Television and Radio, Film and Screen Studies or even Production Management. Others will go on to study another Arts and Humanities course at university – English, Art, History, Psychology, Business Studies etc. We even get the odd mathematician and scientist opting to take Media Studies.

There is also tuition available for several different grades of ABRSM music theory which was really great for me as it gave me the opportunity to study for and take my grade 8 theory exam. With music, I have been to London and spent an amazing evening in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club as well as giving a piano recital at Parbold Music Festival. Within Music, I have been involved in many different bands, including Jazz band, Chamber Choir, String Group and Motown & Soul band with which I have taken part in the College Music Department shows. The factors that influenced me to Winstanley were the excellent new facilities available at a much larger and top performing College, as well as the friendliness and enthusiasm of teachers and students I met on Open Evenings and visit days.

Why should I study Music at Winstanley?

Enrichment activities

You will find that everyone in your class has a real passion for music of all different types. You should already have studied music in some form, and we expect commitment and enthusiasm. We put on a range of concerts and musicals each year, and you can offer your services as a performer, conductor or technician. Recent productions have included The Little Shop of Horrors and Guys and Dolls. Recent ensembles include Jazz Band, Folk Band, String Group, Motown Band and Blues Rock Band.

The best aspect of philosophy is the discursive manner in which the lesson is carried out. Discussion is a vital part of the way in which the subject is taught and learnt. It creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, which in turn gives you the confidence to openly voice and defend your thoughts and opinions. Within a week you will know and make friends with the majority, if not all, of your classmates, a feat no other classroom or subject can do quite so easily. It’s the subject that isn’t afraid of asking and attempting to answer those big questions everyone would rather avoid. I attended the Philosophy Conferences in Manchester hosted by Charlotte and Peter Vardy in both years of the course. Choose a subject not because you think there’s a job at the end of it but because it is something you are willing to spend those extra hours studying and researching because of your genuine interest and enthusiasm for it. I have an offer from Lancaster University where I hope to study a joint honours degree in Mathematics and Philosophy. I chose Winstanley due to its reputation and consistent proven achievement amongst not just local colleges but nationwide.

Why should I study Philosophy at Winstanley?

Enrichment

Philosophy has been defined as ‘thinking about thinking’. It probes deeply into ordinary opinions and convictions on almost every topic – morality, politics, psychology, physics, and religion – taking familiar ideas apart and investigating the issues they raise. If you enjoy thinking and reflecting on these kinds of questions, then philosophy is the course for you. But this course does not just introduce these and other like topics to you; it aims to give you the skills of thinking logically and effectively about them. Learning to do philosophy is training in disciplined thinking. At Winstanley you will be encouraged to think clearly and precisely about the problems you are attempting to solve and concentrate your attention on critical reasoning. In particular, you learn to look at your own reasoning self-critically as you respond to the criticisms of others – philosophy fosters intellectual maturity. Because the lessons at Winstanley involve active discussion, it is hoped that your confidence will increase as you acquire interpersonal skills of expressing yourself straightforwardly and listening to other people.

As a philosopher at Winstanley you will get the chance to go on a variety of department trips, workshops and conferences. You will also have access to a well-resourced section in the library, a selection of journals and use of the P&R department study area which is stocked with useful resources and an area to get some work done. The department also has a tutorial system where you can get individual one-to-one support throughout the year. The annual essay prize competition is a great opportunity to show off your new found reasoning skills. There is also a monthly philosophy club who meet to debate current issues and areas of interest. The teachers in this department are all specialists and enthusiasts in their particular fields.

“ Discussion is a vital part of the way in which the subject is taught and learnt. It creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere”

Subject Combinations Prior knowledge of philosophy is not expected from any student beginning this course. Because the skills employed in philosophy are so fundamental to any academic discipline, it can be usefully combined with any subject - as it has been with former students. Although the method by which you will be assessed involves writing – and good reading skills would be an obvious asset – students studying science or maths have made very successful philosophers in previous years, as well as those studying other subjects. What is needed is an interest in philosophical problems, together with a willingness to argue a case rather than just assert it.

The Future

Previous students have gone on to study a variety of degree courses, including philosophy. The skills you will be developing are highly valued in all kinds of careers where critical analysis and challenging approaches are needed; ranging from law, the media, management, teaching, computing, social work and politics.

What is A-level P.E.?

Subject choices

A-level P.E. allows students to investigate a wide range of sporting issues that influence a sports performer. This multi-disciplinary course covers physiological, sociological and psychological factors affecting sports performance.

If you are choosing psychology or biology then you will find there are topics within these subjects that overlap. However, P.E. can work well with any choice of other A-levels; sometimes studying a diverse timetable offers a range of skills and can be more interesting.

Is A-level P.E. for you? Are you interested in finding out why ice skaters spin quicker if their legs are bent rather than straight? What scientific principles a rugby player can apply to become more stable and more successful at simple moves like tackling? Or finding out why some sports performers underperform when there is a large crowd present whilst others thrive in such situations? If so, these are just some of the ideas explored in P.E.

Why P.E. at Winstanley? All P.E. staff share a genuine love of their subject, are extremely well-qualified and are experienced examiners. They care about each and every student and give individual attention to help each student achieve their potential. You can do ANY sport on the syllabus as part of your qualification. Results in P.E. are consistently excellent. We employ a College Sports Maker as well as a Sport Enrichment Officer to organise a varied and massive extra-curricular programme as well as employing specialist coaches.

Beyond A-level By completing A-level P.E. you would be fully prepared for any subject related degree such as Sports Science or Physiotherapy. Some students choose to further specialise in a specific area of P.E. such as Sports Mechanics or Sports Psychology. Some P.E. students have gone on to study unrelated degrees such as Medicine, Pharmacology, Business and Law, proving that P.E. is a valued academic qualification. We have also had students obtaining scholarships to study Sport in the USA.

P.E. lessons and support Lessons are a combination of theory and practical, discussions, experiments, past exam question practice, group work, guided questioning and research. Learning is supported with YouTube clips, linking theory to practical examples in your own sport, video tutorials and PE PODs. Each student is provided with our in-house work booklets, an OCR class textbook to take away, electronic resources to download from our website and suggested links and discussions on our Facebook page.

Enrichment Sport and Academic Athletes Professional Pathway A huge sporting enrichment programme is available to all students. The department run trips to Loughborough and Leeds Beckett University sports departments as well as hosting visiting speakers. I enjoy the practical aspects of physics, such as the experiments and demonstrations, and find the content of the course very interesting, especially learning about space. All the teachers love the subject too and are enthusiastic in lessons. Â We went on a trip to see the particle accelerator at Daresbury Laboratory which was fascinating and gave an insight into how physics is used in industry. I think it is important that you enjoy and are good at maths if you are going to take physics as the two subjects cross over at A-level.

Why should I study Physics?

What will I study?

The world today would not be the same without physics, from understanding our universe to making leaps in technology that we use every day. Physics is a highly valued subject that combines understanding with practical work and stretches and helps develop your mathematical skills. If you like to think beyond boundaries and have a mind that likes to investigate then physics is the subject for you.

There is a smooth transition from GCSE and practical skills are threaded throughout the course, building both confidence and skill as you study. Topics you have already covered are expanded and the course will take you from the minuscule to infinity: studying the physics of the nucleus to understanding the Big Bang. In the first module the foundations of advanced level physics are laid, thinking about quantities, measurement and uncertainties. The second module explores concepts you will have studied at GCSE and digs deeper to enhance your understanding regarding forces, motion and momentum to name a few. You will also look at the physics of materials and link this to improvements made in materials we use in everyday life. In the second year of the A-level, more amazing topics are studied including waves, astrophysics and medical physics. Physics makes you look at the world in a different way so make your world change at Winstanley!

Why study Physics at Winstanley College? At Winstanley the team will help you explore the field of physics rather than simply study it. We have a history of excellent results and a large proportion of physics students go on to study related degrees at University. The Physics Team care passionately about students, helping and supporting you but also challenging you to achieve your best. There has recently been a major rebuilding project and our brand new Science@Winstanley facilities are outstanding, there has never been a better time to study physics at Winstanley.

What about enrichment? Whilst studying physics at Winstanley College you will have the opportunity to participate in a multitude of fabulous enrichment opportunities. We have been on a number of international trips including to CERN. We organise entry into external competitions and at local HE institutions. There is an opportunity to be involved with the Institute of Physics and we bring in regular guest speakers. Students have taken part in the British Physics Olympiad and been inspired by Engineering Your Future events.

I enjoy the fact that the things you learn in the class actually have relevance in everyday life. You can be taught and discuss a concept and then that same day see it talked about in the media or by your parents. Pick subjects you’re genuinely interested in. It makes it much easier to motivate yourself to revise and do the work when you actually care about what you’re learning about. Also don’t listen to other people’s opinions on your subject, only you can decide which ones are for you. I have had four offers to study Politics post Winstanley. Why I chose Winstanley? The location, great reputation and the fact my friends were coming here.

On a trip to the USA, students learnt first-hand about US politics in the real world with visits to the Pentagon, US Congress, the Peterson house where Lincoln died, the spot where Martin Luther King gave his speech and all the usual New York sights.

Why should I study Politics at Winstanley?

Careers

Politics is a subject which is alive and directly relevant to your life and your future. By studying politics at Winstanley you can be part of the 10% of the nation who actually know what is going on! You should be considering politics if you enjoy current affairs, debates and discussions. We only require that you have a keen interest in the subject, no prior background knowledge is needed as everyone takes part in our ‘user-friendly’ induction programme which introduces key terms and themes. In order to fully enjoy politics, you need to have the ability to write essays and the intelligence to understand and use detailed material as well as the patience to use it. However, one of our great strengths is introducing people to A-level skills so the transition from GCSE to A-level will run smoothly.

Politics complements a huge array of subjects such as law, English, history, philosophy and sociology; however, it is also a great contrast for science students who want to understand how the country works. Many of those that study politics have continued their political studies at university although they may have chosen it originally as a fourth subject. Whether the subject is enjoyed as an interesting A-level or taken to degree level, it can and often leads to exciting careers such as positions in the Law, the Civil Service, Public Administration and Management, Journalism and careers in the Media, the Police and Teaching. For those who are motivated to ‘get involved’ and learn about how our country and America are run, politics is a valuable and exciting A-level which is certainly worth studying.

Enrichment

What will I study?

As well as studying politics, there are lots of opportunities for enrichment activities for students. We regularly invite guest speakers into the college including local parliamentary candidates, members of pressure groups and academics. There are student-led debates on current issues and annual trips to the Houses of Parliament. For those who are keen on a career in Europe there is a trip to Paris and Brussels to visit European institutions, as well as our very popular visit to Washington and New York.

A visit to Chester Zoo gave psychology students the chance to get to know each other better and to closely observe the behaviour of nature, red in tooth and claw. Sounds like a great way to start off a new term at college and as a prelude to studying human behaviour.

Prospectus 2016 - 2017

winstanley college

Why study Psychology?

Enrichment

Psychology is a very exciting field of study, one that attempts to discover how the mind works and why we behave in particular ways in particular situations. Psychology pushes us towards greater selfknowledge by making us more aware of our behaviour and the motivations behind our behaviour, our actions and our personalities. The purpose of psychology as a science is to lead us to a better understanding of human behaviour for the greater good of all humans.

We also like to complement our teaching with appropriate enrichment opportunities.

Psychologists have attempted to answer important questions such as: how does prejudice develop, why do people blindly follow malevolent authority, why do some people develop mental health problems and not others? Psychologists study a range of things that we may normally take for granted: such as how do we learn to be male or female, why do 3 month old babies seem happy in anyone’s company but only like familiar faces when they are 8 months old, when we are attracted to someone is this because we believe they are similar to us or do we like them because of what they can offer us? From September 2015 psychology will move to the new specification.

Psychology at Winstanley College The psychology department is an enthusiastic, committed, creative and imaginative bunch of people. We care about students’ experience of psychology and about our students’ achievements. We pride ourselves on our excellent resources, results and the number of students that go on to study psychology at degree level.

This year we have been to Chester Zoo, where students learned about animal behaviour. We also took students to New York this year which has links to psychology and the media. We also have a number of enrichment activities that are linked to the new topic ‘Anomalistic’ Psychology. This year we had a three day trip to Edinburgh where students visited a parapsychology department and were told about recent developments in the field of paranormal study. Students on this trip also had guided tours to the most haunted parts of Edinburgh.

What will I study? You will consider the nature and organisation of human memory systems (cognitive psychology), the development of attachments in human infants (developmental psychology) and an understanding of how psychologists conduct their research. You will study stress as a bodily response, why stress is experienced differently by different people and the power of the presence of others on our behaviour. What do psychologists mean by psychological abnormality? How is abnormality explained differently by different psychologists and how are psychological disorders treated when the views about how they develop are so different?

Sociology Psychology Politics English Literature Sociology has challenged everything I believe in and made me think for myself. I dedicated a summer to my local library, holding events to get children more involved in reading. This was a skill which I acquired through my sociology course. I have had an offer from the University of East Anglia to study Culture, Literature and Politics. I would like to work for a charity or trade union in the future. I came to Winstanley College because of its status and the fact that you are treated like an adult.

Prospectus 2016 - 2017

What is Sociology?

Enrichment

Putting it simply, sociology is the study of how society impacts or influences human behaviour. Sociology investigates what values, attitudes and rules we learn within society, how we learn them and what effect these rules and attitudes have on our behaviour.

We endeavour to give the best possible experience of sociology by organising social research trips where students are given the opportunity to conduct their own ‘social attitude surveys’ on the public. This usually entails going to the nearest city centre and asking a range of people their attitudes towards education, the media or the police. As part of Unit 4 ‘Crime and Deviance ‘ students have also enjoyed the opportunity of going to a variety of prisons in the North West area as well as visiting Granada Studios and the ‘Jeremy Kyle Show’ as part of Unit 3 ‘Mass Media’.

• Does everyone follow the rules? • Is everyone in society equal or do some groups have more power than others? • Which groups suffer the most/least inequality? • Are social attitudes and rules changing? • Is society sexist and racist?

Who should study Sociology? Sociology is a challenging subject. Sociology students are expected to want to think independently, and make their own judgements based on the sociological theory and evidence they have considered. To enjoy sociology you need to enjoy reading, thinking about people and writing essays. Sociology students are also concerned with gathering social research by using research methods such as questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Sociology students at Winstanley are very keen to undertake research in the areas of Education and Crime in particular. Typical Education Research questions include; ‘How teachers label pupils?’ Are teachers sexist?; or ‘Why do girls outperform boys?.’ Typical Crime Research questions include; ‘Are the police racist?’ ‘Why do males commit more crime than females?’

Why should I study Sociology at Winstanley? At Winstanley, sociology is taught by enthusiastic members of staff who are also examiners. However, sociology isn’t just exam work. Sociology lessons include a diverse range of learning activities including PowerPoints, classroom discussions and debates as well as undertaking social research and analysing the results.

Sociology and Careers There is a wide variety of career options to choose from after studying sociology. For instance because the subject itself allows you to investigate social institutions such as the education system, the health service, the media and the criminal justice system, sociology students often pursue careers connected to these institutions such as teacher, journalist, nurse, social worker, prison officer or police officer. Sociology can also be studied with any subject combination, but it helps if you are studying other subjects in arts, humanities and social sciences, including English, history, philosophy, politics, law and psychology, where similar skills are also developed.

Spanish Psychology English Literature

The main reason I enjoy Spanish is because it’s a challenge and it’s so rewarding being able to speak and write in another language. I also like the amount of depth the course goes into compared to GCSE. This makes it more challenging, but it gives you a better understanding of how the language works, which is interesting to see. For example in the second year we study complex topics such as immigration and terrorism – topics I knew little about prior to the course. Another thing I like about this subject is that I have a 40 minute speaking tutorial included in my timetable once a week. When I went on the college trip to Malaga I got the chance to have conversations with native Spaniards, this experience alongside the tutorials will prepare me for the oral exam. Spanish lessons are never boring and whenever I’ve had a problem or misunderstood, help has always been available. My advice would be to pick subjects that you love because then you’ll feel more motivated to put the work in and do well in that subject. During their trip to Andalusia, students attended nine hours of classes with native speakers in a local language school to develop their skills. But that still left time for seeing the sights of Seville, Cordoba, Granada, Ronda, Nerja, Frigiliana and Malaga.

Why should I study Spanish?

Careers

You should study Spanish if you have an interest in a language spoken by more than four hundred million speakers worldwide, from Spain through the Philippines across South America and even, unofficially, the USA! Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and one of the top five used in business.

Modern Languages are always highly sought after by employers and well respected by the top universities who recognise the demands of the subject and the considerable skills demonstrated by students who study a language. Scientists should study a language to show a greater breadth of knowledge, budding journalists can learn more about their own language by studying another, would-be lawyers can hone their debating skills . . . in fact, Spanish leads comfortably into any career that you can think of! It is said that people who can speak another language can earn up to 10% more than those who can’t.

Spanish at Winstanley Studying Spanish at Winstanley will provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the language, developing your vocabulary, grammar and grasp of the tenses so that you can hold a discussion, write essays, read and understand newspaper articles, listen to interviews and news broadcasts and translate to and from the target language. It’s not just about the language, however, as you will broaden your general knowledge about social and political issues and you will even study an aspect of Spanish culture such as a film or a novel.

Further education The enthusiasm and commitment of the staff is rewarded by a high take up of Spanish amongst our students at degree level. Some go on to study the language as a single degree subject and many choose to combine Spanish with another subject from business to Japanese.

Enrichment For those students who want to get involved with even more aspects of all things Spanish, we run a wide range of activities such as visits to local universities, talks, and films. Students also have the opportunity to take part in a seven day study visit to Spain during which they participate in classes in a language school and visits to places of cultural interest.

What combines well with Spanish? Spanish combines well with every subject offered at Winstanley but is commonly chosen alongside English, business, history, art and other languages. Students of science and maths also enjoy the logic of the language and the application of the grammatical rules.

What will I study? Alongside perfecting the language, you will develop skills in group work, essay writing, independent research, formulating and defending an argument and giving presentations.

As someone who initially disliked drawing, playing around with different drawing surfaces and attempting new styles gave me experience in a variation of techniques. I developed confidence in drawing and finding what was best for me. During the course I used a variety of equipment, machinery and different techniques, such as Photoshop, a laser cutter, printing, wood work and metal work. This widened my experience in creative practice and made the process more exciting. My tutor, Katie, is very helpful and exciting to work with. The technicians, Amanda and Phil, made everything seem a little easier – they make the impossible possible and are always on hand whenever they are needed. The art department in Winstanley is like a gallery in itself! I have an unconditional offer at Mancheseter School of Art.

Exploring styles of drama, learning about the history of theatre, working in groups to create pieces of theatre that help teach morals/lessons are what I have enjoyed the most. I loved the equal split of performance and theory as the course feels balanced and therefore the theory doesn’t feel as weighty. At the end of my first year and into the second year I did work experience as a drama teacher at Hawkley Hall High School. I had the lead role of Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors”, the lead in National Theatre’s “Letter to Lacey” and helped out at Open Evenings. My advice to new students would be to be open to exploring different styles of theatre you wouldn’t normally do. Broaden your horizons! I came to Winstanley because of its reputation and welcoming atmosphere.

Prospectus 2016 - 2017

Why should I study Theatre Studies at Winstanley? Do you love acting? Have you enjoyed trips to the theatre? Want to write your own play? This course is an excellent way to maintain your current involvement in drama as the course is very performance based. The main focus is very much on acting and directing and we will explore a range of theatrical styles and approaches to acting.

Combinations of subjects The course combines very well indeed with a vast range of other subjects, (creative, humanities, languages), but can also provide a stimulating contrast to subjects such as the sciences.

Careers In the past, students completing this course have progressed on to courses at vocational drama schools, theatre and media related courses at university and, of course, taken places at the whole spectrum of prestigious universities to study non-related subjects. This is a course which provides a valuable stepping-stone into a vast range of career pathways. We have contacts with performers and practitioners in the industry, major drama schools and universities in order to provide up-to-the-minute careers advice. Many of our former students are working in the industry now and we always appreciate their return to the college.

Enrichment activities To extend your theatrical experiences you will undoubtedly wish to take advantage of our workshop and theatre visits both here and abroad. Recent activities have included movement classes on Broadway in New York, acting

winstanley college

workshops with directors from London drama schools, masterclasses with directors from The National Theatre and RSC and theatre visits across the country. The department was recently invited to perform at the Royal National Theatre; a very prestigious reward for our entry to this year’s Connections Festival. We have an extensive programme of plays and musicals each year so that you can offer your services as a performer, theatre technician or backstage. We enter festivals, tutor you for auditions and support student-led projects. Facilities include a 200 seat studio theatre, practice rooms, recording studios and industry-standard lighting and sound equipment (which we will happily train you to use). Our brand new building offers an exciting environment to study in.

What will I study? You will explore two contrasting plays from the perspective of actors, directors and designers. The work will be very practical; exploring how the plays actually work on stage, trying out different approaches and recording the outcomes as written coursework. You will be performing in a group play from a published script chosen by the tutor, and also performing a monologue or duologue of your own choice. You will work as a group to devise a new play. You will be working with an established classical script to consider approaches to acting and directing, and reviewing modern approaches to classical text by attending a current professional performance of such a play.
