Rights, Responsibilities, Gifts and Privileges FLIP

Here's some food for thought that can help you to organize your thinking about expectations and privileges in your house. Remember, each family is unique, and so a “right” in one family's home may be considered a “privilege” by another family. It pays off to be explicit and concrete with your child/teen, explaining what your expectations are and how s/he can earn privileges or lose them. Another key to success: be consistent and clear with your kids and follow through with what you say! Rights: Items to which your child is entitled. For ex: food, shelter, clothing, medical care, education, protection from harm Responsibilities: Behaviour and tasks clearly established by parents and schools that are in line with the child's age and developmental ability. For example: going to school, being honest, household chores, doing homework etc. Gifts: Something that is given as a gift and not tied to responsibilities or consequences down the road (unless explicitly stated up front when the gift is given). Privileges: Activities or treats that are earned. For example, watching TV, using a Computer, going skiing, holidays, sleepovers etc.
