What then is time? If no one asks me, I know: if I wish to explain it to one that asked, I know not. - Saint Augustine Saint Augustine’s irony is based on the familiarity, maybe excessive, that we have with the concept of time. It leads us to use and measure it daily without knowing what it is actually. Time is the indefinite continued progress of existence and events that occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future.

“This Hourglass is all about time, but in a more esoteric and fundamental way. I was thinking of having fun with time. Marc Newson

Eternal return

Ouruboros

The ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. The symbol often taken to symbolize self-reflexivity, introspection, the eternal return or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself. It also represents the infinite cycle of nature’s endless creation and destruction, life and death.

Circadian

Circadian rhythms are physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, responding primarily to light and darkness in an organism's environment. They are important in determining the sleeping and feeding patterns of all animals. These 24-hour rhythms are driven by a biological clock. The circadian clock, in most living beings, makes it possible for organisms to coordinate their biology and behavior with daily environmental changes in the day-night cycle.

12.00 10.00 high alertness

14.30 best coordination 15.30 fastest reaction time

6.45 4.30 lowest body temperature

19.30 22.30 highest body temperature

2.00 deepest sleep 00.00

The watch

To counterbalance our rushed digital lifestyle and pursue time for daily contemplation in an intuitive way, we developed a product that evoke physical interaction. The Circadian watch by Munich is designed as a combination between tradition and innovation. The idea is to generate a difference perception and unit of time through a digital clock. Set according to the circadian cycle, it is diffusing colored light through time to rebalance our body clock. While daylight as a whole is beneficial, different colors of light seem to affect the body in different ways.

Sizes

The watch is divided into 4 parts. The dial is the moving part which incorporate an LED system to improve the user experience. This part is connected by a rotatory axis with the case, that contains the whole electronic system. At the bottom there is an electronic battery to power the engine system. All of these parts are joined by screws. The Circadian watch is available in two sizes: a small and a big one. In order to please everyone, the watch as well as the watchstrap have been designed to perfectly fit women’s and men’s wrists. The holes also allow to better adapt it in order to satisfy the user’s preferencies.

Fashion collection

The fashion collection is designed following the philosophy of Circadian and adding a nice touch. Bold pairings of gold and black offer a dramatic statement for this collection. White and bronze offer an edgy flair. Fashion and function are versatile in this daring pairing. An elegant way to wear a unique watch.

Sport collection

The passion of Munich for sport is visible in the sport watch collection. The essence of form and function culminating in three different colours. The light of the watch changes from red to blue revealing the hours in which your body is at its highest perfomance, higher sensitivity or lower temperature. Time to run?

Everything flows

“τὰ ὄντα ἰέναι τε πάντα καὶ μένειν οὐδέν” All entities move and nothing remains still. Heraclitus of Ephesus’ philosophy conlcuded that nature is change. Everything is constantly changing, from the smallest grain of sand to the stars in the sky. Thus, every object ultimately is a figment of one’s imagination. Only change itself is real, constant and eternal flux, like the continuous flow of the river which always renews itself. Heraclitus drew the ultimate lesson for the human condition. As material beings, we live in a world of flux. Moreover, we are flux. As physical bodies, we are growing and dying all the time, consuming light and resources to replicate our structure, while shedding matter continuously. Change and death are ubiquitous features of the natural world.

Watch the flowing time

Following the philosophy of Circadian that criticizes the rushed digital lifestyle, we invented a way to rethink time in its poetic sense, a way to rebring contemplation and gratitude in our hurry days. In a society ruled by the clock with stress as the result, we developed a charger for the watch that drives you to a moment of meditation, remembering you to enjoy the daily poetic of life. We surely cannot stop time but we can sit and watch the constant and eternal flux of it.

Wear your wristband

Thinking about Munich's dynamic target we designed a watchstrap that is versatile and comfortable both with the watch and without. It is available in textile or silicone both for the fashion collection and the sport one. The wristband, with lots of different colours is thought to be worn even when the watch is on charge. The simple way of closing the strap with just a light pressure allows you to easily put your watch on in every moment.

Contrast is important

As the Circadian clock oscillates between 24 hours, in the space and other applications we rapresented a contrast: black gradually turns into white as well as night gradually becomes day. Day-night contrast is a source of health for the human circadian system. Modern societies are characterized by a 24/7 lifestyle with no environmental differences between day and night, resulting in an impaired circadian system.
