Project Brief
This project was intended to create an application that was used by the people of the Fredonia and Dunkirk area to “Dérive” or drift through the area. The application is supposed to be used by someone who is walking or bike riding. The appliation’s aim is to allow the user to slow down and appreciate the local areas.

Research
The City of Dunkirk has a long and rich park history with many public parks. Including Point Gratiot and Wright Park, the two most popular City Parks along beautiful Lake Erie. These parks provide people with a variety of activities including picnicking, sightseeing and swimming. The other places I included in my application include, The Pier, Crooked Brook, and Canadaway Creek. These places also provide a place to relax and enjoy the sights. I chose all of these places because of this. Some things I learned, Point Gratiot is known for the song birds that migrate there, Crooked Creek and Canadaway Creek are known for their rich fishing habitats, Wright Park has a skate park near by, and the Pier is a great place to escape the confines of campus life and provides a beautiful
5
view.
Inspiration
I found inspiration in old topographical maps and in my own personal experiences of the places I have chosen. I also found inspiration in pinterest and the noun project.
6
Conceptual Strategies
My conceptul strategies include using the topographic map throughout the application so that it would make the user feel as though they were looking into the past and see the application as traditional and classy. this is also why I used the typeface Scotch Micro throughout. I wanted to continue the traditional and classy look and I think that Scotch Micro gives the user that feeling. The one place I strayed from tradition was the pink landscaping. I did this because I wanted the application to be calming. I wanted to put a twist on the traditional topographic map so that it wasn’t too stuck in the past and to
7
entice the viewer.
Design Strategies
My design strategies include the use of the streets in the light blue to put them higher in the hierarchy and then I used the dashed lines to indicate the movement of the user. The icon of the bell in the corner was put there to include information. The bikes were included to guide the user in the right direction to the destination. I also decided to include a music playlist with the application to give the user nice relaxing music for their journey, as the application is intended.

Derive Application Essay
To start the Derive project I tried to think of places that would interesting to visit
or see in the Fredonia and Dunkirk area. I started leaning towards nature destinations and I got my inspiration from the headlight on the pier. The track team has a tradition of jumping off of the pier right when we get back to school in the fall so, I decided to base the rest of my destinations off of this experience. I chose the Pier, Wright Park, Crooked Creek and Point Gratiot.
I started looking for different kinds of maps and I came across a topographic
map of a mountain that caught my eye. I decided to create my map in that way. I found a topographic map of the Dunkirk and Fredonia area and I used it as the backdrop of the map after I had traced the topographic lines in Illustrator. I started thinking of my color scheme based off of various topographic maps and their water color. I wanted to do this because most of my destinations are based around Lake Erie or rivers. I found the greenish blue and then I decided to use the different shades and tints of the greenish blue to create depth in my map. I chose pink because I wanted the application to be calming and relaxing. I chose Scotch Micro as my typeface throughout the application because while observing other topographic maps I really enjoyed the old traditional italic fonts. While searching for a font that looked like the old maps I came across, I found Scotch Micro and thought it fit nicely with my map. I then decided to make an iso-type of a bicycle because the distanc-
13
es of my destinations can get kind of long. I then created my streets in a light blue color
so it pop against the pink. I later added a light lavender drop shadow to the streets because the light blue strokes looked too flat against the deep background. Next, I added the paths to the destinations. I decided to make it a green dash line, I think it works well because i feel that dashes indicate movement. After I made my maps I made my cover page and I decided to use the map that included all the destinations so to foreshadow the rest of the application. I then overlayed the map with a white box with the word “Derive cut into it with two round icons to tap on to continue through the map.
Each map includes a small bell icon in the corner and when tapped the information
about the destination and a picture of the location appears to aid the viewer. I included information that I thought would benefit the user, to let them know what to look for in the destination. I included a picture along with this information so you could know you were in the correct place. I also decided to include a music player with the application because I felt as the application developed it kind of intimate and romantic. I feel that the application became a fun thing to do with your significant other and the songs I have chosen represent that.
I find that my application is successful because I think it encompasses all that I was
striving to acheive. I wanted the application to be traditional with a twist and I think with the color palette I have accomplished this. I also wanted the application to be calm and easygoing. My use of Scotch Micro wss a good choice because it is elegant and its legible at small point sizes. I really enjoyed this project and I hope that I can continue to develop my skills in typography and learn ways to push my type and keep my designs interesting.
