The transformation of built is THE key topic in the European context and embodies a new thrilling task in architecture: one has to understand the existing, its typology, qualities, sense and structure. Why there, when, how, how long... One should realise it as a source and transform it according to contemporary needs of its surrounding or community. The former Dolphinarium and Aquarium on Tel Aviv’s flourishing Mediterranean coast was attraction, magnet, money-making machine, education, commerce, zoo, leisure and shopping mall for 4 years. Now 20 years passed and it turned into a ruin, a myth, is still a border stone, a time witness, an obstacle, a gambling tool with the ability to connect and link areas minds on the most wanted plot in the city. Vacancy is a phenomenon in Tel Aviv and for its own reasons not solved at all. The conscious about it as an urban problem seems still missing or too little in the minds of the citizens. Das Transformieren von Gebautem ist Schlüsselthema in Europa und eine neue Aufgabe in der Architektur: man muss den Bestand, seine Typologie, seine Qualitäten, Sinn und Strukturen verstehen. Warum dort, wann, wie, wie lang… Ihn als Quelle begreifen und adäquat an neue Bedürfnisse anpassen. Das ehemalige Delfinarium und Aquarium an Tel Aviv’s Mittelmeerküste war vier Jahre lang Attraktion, Magnet, Geldmaschine, Bildungsauftrag, Kommerz, Zoo, Vergnügen und Shopping Mall. Heute, 20 Jahre später, ist es Ruine, Mysterium, immer noch Grenzstein, Zeitzeuge, Störfaktor, Spekulationsobjekt mit dem Potential zum Bindeglied an der begehrtesten Stelle der Stadt Leerstand ist ein Phänomen in Tel Aviv für das es dort noch keine Lösung zu geben scheint. Ein Bewusstsein, das sich erst einstellen muss und noch zu verhalten in der Öffentlichkeit steht. POOL ist Utopie, Projekt und Marke. * DOLPHINARIUM AKTIV Concept
The Dolphinarium is sitting on one of Tel Aviv’s most wanted plots but abandoned and neglected since its closing in 1986. It made history and furthermore marks a historic point of the city: the former border between Tel Aviv and Jaffa. Despite its appearance it is a fascinating complex of spaces and rooms. A mix of beauty and beast. With this project a reactivation is planned that stops further damage but saves the status quo as a symbol. Like a temple - a temple of reuse as one of the first official reuse projects in Tel Aviv. Reusing urban resources. Main Objective of this work is to give an opportunity to enter this proud solitaire and to give a deeper understanding of its spatial qualities make them visible and tangible. It has to remain as a monument. After a huge inventory special rooms were recognized worthy to be opened to the public, not the whole complex. Five spatial typologies were filtered and will be explained. Furthermore they’ll receive an adequate reuse strategy. The ‘left over space’ will be ignored for now.
Das Delphinarium ist ein bizarrer Baukörper an einer der begehrtesten Stellen Tel Aviv‘s, der seit Jahrzehnten dem Verfall ausgesetzt ist. Er hat bereits Geschichte geschrieben und markiert zudem eine historische Stelle der Stadt: die Grenze zwischen Tel Aviv und Jaffa. Trotz der teilweise maroden Bausubstanz geht eine ungeheure Faszination von dem Gebäudekomplex aus. Eine Symbiose von Scheußlichkeit und Schönheit. Im Zuge dieses Projektes soll eine Umnutzung geplant werden, die den weiteren Verfall stoppt, dessen Spuren aber nicht komplett übertüncht. Hauptziel der Arbeit ist es diesen stolzen Solitär zu entern, den Menschen seine Qualitäten näher zu bringen und seine Erscheinung nicht nur auf eine Ruine zu reduzieren. Es soll als Denkmal erhalten bleiben. Nach der Bestandsaufnahme traten besondere Räume in Erscheinung, die zum Zentrum der Arbeit wurden und eine Teilaktivierung des Gebäudes darstellen. Fünf Raumtypologien werden vorgestellt und im Laufenden mit einer geeigneten Funktion belegt. Zuerst steht jedoch die jeweilige Raumtypologien im Mittelpunkt und soll gezeigt werden. Resträume des Complexes werden vorerst vernachlässigt.

It shall become a meeting point at day and night, for young and old, poor and not poor - a melting pot and a place of communication, joy and happiness. Existing interim uses are already implemented in parts of the complex such as a dance club and a surf school. They demonstrate how reuse can work and that it works successful in the case of the dolphinarium. But what function is strong enough to become a magnet again and for ever? What has that many power to transform the building into a beloved one? Mostly simple, basic ideas are responsible for a happy tear in the eye of everyone such as: balloons, ice cream or water... Water is archaic: the function of the bath has tradition and history in any religion, country and for nearly everyone. The urban bath is more popular than ever and currently experiences its revival worldwide: Berlin, Essen, Vienna, Nex York. POOL - the transformation of a dolphinarium into a public bath.
Es soll ein Treffpunkt für Jung und Alt sowie für sozial Schwache und Starke werden, sprich: „Ein Platz der Kommunikation“. Die bereits erlebbaren Nutzungen eines Teils der Anlage als Surfclub sowie Tanzclub zeigen, dass ein Umnutzungskonzept funktionieren kann. Jedoch welche Funktion hat die Kraft die Magnetwirkung von 1981 zu wiederholen und diesmal zu festigen? Was hat so viel Kraft, dass das Gebäude geliebt wird? Meist sind es einfache Ideen, die den Menschen ein Glänzen in die Augen zaubern: Luftballons, Eiscreme, Wasser... Wasser ist archaisch: das Bad hat Tradition und Geschichte in jeder Religion, in jedem Land für Jedermann. Das urbane Baden ist angesagter denn je und erlebt sein Revival weltweit: Berlin, Essen, Wien, New York. Es stellt eine ideelle Umnutzung für ein Delphinarium dar.

The plan is a pool area which has a central entrance for security reasons. After a security check the visitor reaches the pool level by using the old staircase. Now the former restaurant houses the hot tub and all functional facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, shower, bar and especially lockers that serve as wall decoration. It serves as the head of the system. The bar service shall be active during daytime and at night. Through a new cut from bar area to swimming pool, where you’ll find the parent’s area of the paddling pool, you’ll reach the almost 200m long swimming pool. The longest continuous pool in Israel. From the shallow paddling pool slide gently into the swimming area. The individual pools span a space which is connected with wooden decks and the sun deck. The decks are also accessible via the entrance stair case. A former view point hosts the life guard and aministration The water supply and circulation is managed by the existing and reactivated water purification system in the complex. It draws its water directly from the adjacent Mediterranean. The salt obtained from partial desalination [eg. for the Whirlpool] is the supply for the floating pool and its high salt content of 10-12%. The floating pool is located in the covered of the two aquariums. A shallow staircase with wide steps leads down to the middle of the cylindrical building. Another cut allows the visitor to then dip gently into the 1.35 m deep salt basin [for nonswimmers]. The second tank is now home to a 3m diving platform and can be experienced in its full depth of 5m. Two staircases lead to the bottom of the pool where children can observe the buzz in the water through reconstructed windows ‘as before’. The security exit is guaranteed by fire ladders that allow an escape every 40m from the roof of the building. The massive structure to support the swimming pool will be the groundfloor. The so called construction floor. Further use taken into account. An existing cantiliver below the new wooden deck along the swimming pool offers room for all needed pipes and supplys.
Geplant ist eine Poollandschaft, die aus Sicherheitsgründen über einen zentralen Eingang verfügt. Nach der Sicherheitskontrolle erreicht der Besucher über das Treppenhaus die Poolebene. Im ehemaligen Restaurant befindet sich der Whirlpool und alle funktionalen Einrichtungen wie WC, Umkleide, Dusche, Bar und vor allem Schließfächer, die als Wandgestaltung dienen. Der Barbetrieb ist auch nachts tätig. Über einen Durchbruch von Barbereich zu Swimmingpool, in dem sich nun der Elternbereich des Planschbeckens befindet, erreicht man das fast 200m lange Schwimmbecken. Über das Planschbecken kann man sich sanft in den Schwimmerbereich gleiten lassen. Die einzelnen Pools spannen einen Raum auf, welcher über Holzdecks und Sonnendecks erschlossen werden welches auch vom Treppenhaus aus direkt erreichbar ist. Die Versorgung des Pool mit Frischwasser erfolgt über eine bereits auf dem Gelände vorhandene Wasseraufbereitungsanlage. Diese bezieht ihr Wasser aus dem direkt angrenzenden Mittelmeer. Das gewonnen Salz aus teilweiser Entsalzung [zB. für den Whirlpool] wird dem Schwebebecken für seinen erhöhten Salzgehalt von 10-12% zugeführt. Dieses ist im überdachten der beiden Aquarien untergebracht. Eine seichte Treppe mit ausladenden Stufen führt sie bis zur mittleren Höhe des Zylinderbaus wo man dann durch einen Durchbruch sanft in das 1,35m tiefe Salzbecken eintauchen kann [für Nichtschwimmer geeignet]. Das zweite Aquarium beherbergt nun einen 3m hohen Sprungturm und ist in seinen kompletten 5m Tiefe erfahrbar. Zwei Treppen führen vor allem Kinder an den Grund des Beckens an dem sie durch neu eingesetzte Fenster ‘wie früher’ das Treiben im Wasser beobachten können. Der Fluchtweg ist über Feuerleitern gesichert, die eine Flucht alle 40m vom dach des Gebäudes ermöglichen. Die aufwändige Konstruktion findet Platz im Erdgeschoss, dem sogenannten Konstruktionsgeschoss. Nutzung nicht ausgeschlossen. Desweiteren bietet ein bestehender Hohlraum immerhalb des auskragenden Dachvorsprungs genügend Stauraum für Rohre und Leitungen.
