KAZUYA MORITA ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 森田一弥建築設計事務所

Funded by the German government I had the chance to study Japanese architecture offices, their environment, methods and habits. My first choice: Kazuya MORITA Architecture Studio. In addition to the regular work I was asked to visulize the atmosphere and situation of his practise and to conceptulize his projects. The result is a beautiful image video and exhibition models made from concrete and cedar, illustrating a simple base supporting complex wooden structures. In my experience MORITA-San has a sincere attitude, tiredless with a strong interest in Theory + Research. It has been a pleasure spending six months with him and his warm-hearted architects living an inspiring mountain-life full of nature, light and in tranquillity. HERE IS THE MOVIE

TOILET IN KYOTO

八坂金剛寺庚申堂のトイレ A monk asked MORITA-San for a public toilet in the backyard of his temple in Higashiyama, the tradiotional heart of Kyoto. The temple follows a religion called Koshin-shinko, which originated from Chinese Taoism. In Taoism excretion is a human necessity; as long as people live, excretion has to occur in order to keep their lives. Due to an increase of tourism, the client wished to serve his visitors the oportunity

to follow their call of nature when coming along. The design process led from research on the human body towards the history of toilets in Japan culminating in the idea of an open toilet where nature could be observed without beeing seen from outside. Responsibilities: Analysis, Concept Design, Planning (structural, electrical), Detailing 1:50, Materiality.

ATELIER BOW-WOW アトリエ・ワン

The first time I visited the Atelier-House of Yoshiharu TSUKAMOTO and Momoyo KAIJIMA I came as photographer, comissioned by the Bauhaus University, Weimar for their TOKYO RESEARCH PROJECT. I knew the two were friends with MORITA-San, so I decided to compare their work- and lifestyle with my experiences in Kyoto and joined Atelier Bow-Wow for half a year.

HOME FOR ALL ATELIER BOW-WOW One of the key points in japanese architecture practice is that you give over to a general contractor after design phase. Therefore you lose control about the building process. In order to let the building become what it was meant to be, models serve as a feasibility study. You literaly build the building in 1:50, prefarably 1:20 to make sure that no mistake will be made on site. You mimic every color or material and make decisions on that basis, also with the client. Often, models are placed on site as references for construction workers. That in a way, explains the necessity of models japanese internships and student work is famous for. 3D is never enough - a notable attitude that, especially when talking about mediation/ communication of architcture, is a valuable tool.

As for HOME-FOR-ALL, it is a base for those who lost their homes or jobs in the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11th 2011. Since desasters kept occuring in the recent past, the initiative kept spreading across Japan. Founded by Toyo Ito and curated by Klein Dytham Architecture, Atelier Bow-Wow are, among others, supporting the ‚HOME-FOR-ALL‘ NPO with two HOME-FORALL projects in Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan. Both buildings consist of a simple wooden structure that orients along the achievments of Antonin Raymond, a Chech American architect that explored traditional Japanese building techniques combined with the latest In American building innovations. RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead of Model and Photography Feasibility Study for Design Lead - Material and Detailing.

GRAPHIC ANATOMY ATELIER BOW-WOW Working on a design incorporates research. Atelier BowWow don‘t research everything before actually designing - they are learning by doing. This way they always take something with them: inspiration, knowledge and experience that, in turn, helps them understand further projects or research topics such as Window Behaviorology or Architectural Ethnography. Therefore they constantly keep reflecting on what they‘ve learned and done by recreating their drawings: An incredible insight into construction documents and specifications turned into poetics. As if the zooming into their layered detailing of their work opened up an entirely new world and new understanding of their practise. And as a result, of the beauties and pleasures and meanings of the ordinary. RESPONSIBILITIES: Graphic-Anatomy-Drawing: 3DModeling from Detailing, Section-Perspective from 3D, 2D drawing/ overlay 14

COMPETITION ZURICH ATELIER BOW-WOW A swiss practice asked ABW to team up for the competition of the new Marina-Tiefenbrunnen in Zurich, Swizerland. A remote area at Zurich Lake experiencing a redevelopment plan and reconnection to the city. As a new common space the marina was interpretated as a huge foot bridge floating on the water offering facilies for water sports, swimming, hanging out and restaurant. The concpet of representation: A gigantic CG showing everyday situations and natural scale in order to underline the human proximity of the project. RESPONSIBILITY: Lead of CG (Team of 3-5 interns, A0, 5 days)
