Watch Tower - Realized Competition, 2nd Price 2007

Cottbus 2007 - the municipality of Teichland launched a Student Competition for a watch tower observing the Lausatian energy landscape caused by massive coal mining activities - typical for the region. In 2020 the existing coal mining pit will be turned into a lake and for this reason municipalities surrounding the ‘lake’ get funded by energy company Vattenfall for a redevelopment of the area that is expected to boom in 2030. Guidelines: 50 m high 1 mio € budget 0 wood 2 months The design derives from its environment: shaped by wind and supported by a forest of steel columns referring to forestry surrounding the area of the future lake. A centre stair case leads up to 2 open platforms. The construction remains visible and tangible for the visitor but covered from outside with a light membrane fabric - translucent at night.

>Hier ist der Garten!<

Landscape Planning, BTU Cottbus, 2008

Cottbus 2008 - 10 neglected plots were revitalized: within an experimental Landscape Design Project ‘Hier-ist-derGarten’ 40 students created beautiful gardens where no citizen would expect it. The 1 year project with its gardens, final symposium and festival with numerous visitors was very successful and won the first price in a national development competition launched by the Ministry for Infrastructure and Planning, 2009. ‘Tiefenlichter’ [‚shadows/highlights‘] is one of the ten we realised in a group of four. Within one year the 10 m wide but 50 m long plot with an old unused railway track turned into a magic forest. Today 2 gardens remained others experienced a regular urban development. Algebraic Geometry in Architectural Design Building Typology // BTU Cottbus, 2009

The seminar described an experimental architectural student design project in which architectural designs were derived from algebraic surfaces and the exploration of the manifold novel shapes found in algebraic geometry and their application in architectural design. These surfaces represent the zero-sets of certain polynomials of varying degrees. They are therefore very structured, coherent and harmonious yet at the same time geometrically and topologically highly complex. Their application in design is mostly unprecedented as they have only recently begun to become accessible through novel software tools. show how algebraic surfaces can be used to expand architects’ sculptural vocabulary, make the utmost of three dimensional sculptural qualities, employ shapes that have a strong internal structure, transcend the imaginable and explore polynomials as a new kind of shape-making tool. Moreover it supports an interdisciplinary research project run by professors in architecture and mathematics from various German universities.

WS 3 | Lisbon, Portugal - Hotel-Escola

Building in Existing // UAL - Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, 2011

Lisbon - seven hills, medieval urban fabrics and historical heritage vs. tourism. A new Hotel-School was asked to fit in the existing structure in the middle of the historic centre. The city’s topography and relation with the river Tagus influenced its foundation and it still affects many of the architectural operations in Lisbon today. Since the 1960s, the city centre is at the risk of becoming deserted and having solely one function while, simultaneously, there is growing pressure from tourism on this area. This project aims to contribute critically to a renewal of the city centre, considering tourism as one of its driving forces. The place chosen for the intervention is topographically framed by platforms (Belvederes). The new Hotel School is a covered public square and a contemporary Belvedere. Aim is to create a melting pot of open space, hotel and education for students and visitors. Restaurant = Lacture Hall = covered public square, Roof = Belvedere and Hotel Rooms are alternating with lecture rooms. An open concept makes the building an interchanger.

WS 6 | Costa del Sol, Spain - 33½ 10 - A real time Architecture and Urban Competition Coastal Transformation, Heritage and Tourism // Universidad de Sevilla, 2011

3½ 10: Three days of work, half a day of exhibition, one action, two layers, ten plots, ten rules The context is a space filled with contradictions, with no sense of belonging, a suburban area far away from any kind of metropolis. The idea: This panorama suggests a critical architectural strategy that moves beyond Vitruvean ‘firmitas’ but still prevails a notion of architectural permanence, where the performative action becomes a radical social gesture that goes far beyond the production of an aesthetic object. An inversion of the map, where the empty becomes used. An activation of local potentialities for a social change, working with the context and focusing on the principle of action. A space of culture and community, a statement in a consolidated environment. Real time architecture, an urban competition, an action that generates interventions in limited areas within a certain period of time. A quick action with lasting impressions. A representation of the tension between the permanent as planned and static, and the temporary as experience and mutant. Temporary use starts out from context and current condition, not from a distant goal. It seeks to use what already exists rather than inverting a new. Temporary urban Landscapes therefore offer a unique opportunity for design events of limited life to exist, injecting the urban environment with playfulness, imagining possible futures that are experimental and adaptive. It intents to work with the condition of uncertainty, to turn trial and error as a natural way of work. It does not intent to diffuse a paternal attitude towards citizens nor promote a positivist fascination for the functional and constructive virtues of the elements. It intends to be an overall space strategy and not site specific. The ‘problem-solving’ is not on the transformation of the plot’s physical appearance, but rather through the establishment of ‘soft’ rules and uses that manage the complexity and identity of the place. The forgotten buildings become the facilities... Anne Groß [GER], Üllar Ambos [EST], Tomás Forjaz [PT] After Effects Animation

WS 7 | Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel - Emptiness

Between Tel Aviv and Jaffa // TAU - Tel Aviv University, David Azrieli School of Architecture, 2011

Former district >Menashiya<, an Arabian neighborhood of Jaffa, deserted in 1948 and demolished in the 60’s, causes a dilemma of separation and space between Jaffa and Tel Aviv which is still not solved. We’ve decided to design the blank, filling the hole with emptiness and underlining the left over space, giving it its own strength and identity - neither Tel Aviv nor Jaffa. The aim is a space of consciousness without specific connotations which causes the user to reflect and contemplate. A topography supported by punctual interventions with its own programme, beyond commerce, and a space in between which works as a resonance body that allows flexible activities. Following strict minimal design parameters: Intimacy, activity, accessibility, level of resonance, orientation, relation, ventilation, natural illumination, noise, shape, construction device, shape, size 9 necessary rooms were designed: Library, reading hall, book exchange, public reading, toilet, single + group space introverted/ extroverted. MASTER‘S THESIS *TEL AVIV AKTIV is an atlas. It is a method of analysis and documentation of the denied heritage in the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. It introduces 9 mega structures: remarkable public buildings of different typologies within different urban contexts. They all have in common to be neglected, deserted or abandoned - simply unused urban sources. It dissects each source and reveals its elements: structural, functional, visible, invisible. It tends to bring the buildings back into peoples mind by disclosing their potential for activity. An unclouded representation of each building in a schematic way as well as an unusual point of view help to focus on qualities that are hidden by garbage and dislike nowadays. Furthermore it introduces Open-Source Urbanism and what planners can learn from programmers.

Anne Groß| Master‘s Thesis | M.Sc. 04-09 2012

DIPLOMA THESIS *DOLPHINARIUM AKTIV is the first transformation out of the 9 turning the abandoned Dolphinarium and Aquarium into a public POOL. In 1981 on Tel Aviv’s flourishing Mediterranean coast the complex used to be attraction, magnet, moneymaking-machine, education, commerce, zoo, leisure and shopping mall for 4 years. Now 20 years passed and it turned into a ruin, a myth, is still a border stone, a time witness, an obstacle, a gambling tool with the ability to connect and link areas and minds on the most wanted plot in the city. POOL is Utopia, Project and Label. It provokes, polarizes, points out, makes fun and shocks...

Vacancy

is a phenomenon in Tel Aviv and for its own reasons not solved at all. The conscious about it as an urban problem seems still missing or too little in the mind of the city. The Book (online publication HERE) PREFACE - CULTURAL BACKGROUND *BERLIN AKTIV shows strategies and experiences ‘made in Berlin’. Since open and transparent planning processes are more and more successful and get even supported by the Senate for Urban Development the author is sharing her knowledge in order to encourage Tel Aviv to RETHINK! A Wake Up Call for Open Processes and Temporary Use to everyone in the city. CHAPTER 1 - THEORY introduces Open- Source Urbanism and what planners can learn from programmers. CHAPTER 2 - 9 SOURCES is the practical contribution releasing 9 Source Codes of the city of TLV, portraying 9 different neglected buildings and typologies in different neighborhoods: 1. Atarim Square - Hotel + Mall 2. Dizengoff Square 3. ‘Central Park‘ Multistorey parking lot 4. Dolphinarium 5. Shuk Ha‘Aliya - Market hall 6. Old Central Bus Station 7. New Central Bus Station 8. transformation

The of built is THE key topic in the European context and embodies a new thrilling task in architecture: understand the existing, its typology, qualities, sense and structure. Why there, when, how, how long? One should realise it as a source and transform it according to contemporary needs of the surrounding or community.

The former Dolphinarium and Aquarium on Tel Aviv’s flourishing Mediterranean coast was attraction, magnet, money-making machine, education, commerce, zoo, leisure and shopping mall for 4 years. Now 20 years passed and it turned into a ruin, a myth, is still a border stone, a time witness, an obstacle, a gambling tool with the ability to connect and link areas and minds on the most wanted plot in the city. Main Objective of this work is to give the opportunity to enter this proud solitaire and to gain a deeper understanding of its spatial qualities: make them visible, tangible and accessible. It has to remain as a monument.

POOL - The transformation of a dolphinarium into a public bath. The Dolphinarium is sitting on one of Tel Aviv’s most wanted plots but abandoned and neglected since its closing in 1986. It made history and furthermore marks a historic point of the city: the former border between Tel Aviv and Jaffa - the Jewish and Arabic Town. Despite its appearance it is a fascinating complex of spaces and spatial typologies. A mix of Beauty and Beast. With this project a reactivation is planned that stops further damage but saves the status quo as a symbol. Like a temple - a temple of reuse as one of the first official reuse-projects in Tel Aviv. Reusing urban resources. Existing Temporary Uses are already implemented in parts of the complex such as a dance club a surf school and drummers that gather every Friday to play for peace. They demonstrate how reuse can work and that it works successful in the case of the Dolphinarium. But what function is strong enough to become a magnet again and for everyone? What has that many power to transform the ruin into a beloved building? In most cases simple basic ideas are responsible for a happy tear in the eye of everyone such as: balloons, ice cream or water... It shall become a meeting point at day and night, for young and old, poor and not poor - a melting pot and a place of communication, joy and happiness. Water is archaic: the function of the bath has tradition and history in any religion, country and for nearly everyone. The urban bath is more popular than ever and currently experiences its revival worldwide: Berlin, Essen, Vienna, Nex York.

Concept | Transformation

POOL - The transformation of a dolphinarium into a public bath. Planned is a poolscape that has a central entrance for security reasons. After a security check the visitor reaches the pool level by using the existing staircase. Now the former restaurant houses the hot tub and all functional facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, showers, bar and especially lockers that serve as wall decoration - it is the head of the system. The bar service shall be active during daytime and at night. Through a new cut from bar area to swimming pool you’ll find the parent’s area of the paddling pool and reach the almost 200 m long swimming pool. The longest continuous pool in Israel. From the shallow paddling pool slide gently into the swimming area. The individual pools span a space which is connected with wooden decks and the sun deck. A former observation point hosts the life guard and administration. The water supply and circulation is managed by the existing and reactivated water purification system in the complex. It draws its water directly from the adjacent Mediterranean. The salt obtained from partial desalination serves as supply for the floating pool and its high salt content of 10-12%. The floating pool is located in the covered of the two aquariums. A shallow staircase with wide steps leads down to the middle of the cylindrical building. Another cut allows the visitor to then dip gently into the 1.35 m deep salt basin [for nonswimmer]. The second tank is now home to a 3 m diving platform and can be experienced in its full depth of 5 m. Two staircases lead to the bottom of the pool where children can observe the buzz in the water through reconstructed windows ‘as before’. The security exit is guaranteed by fire ladders that allow an escape every 40 m from the roof of the building. The massive structure to support the swimming pool will be the ground floor. The so called construction floor. Further use taken into account. An existing cantilever below the new wooden deck along the swimming pool offers room for all needed pipes and supplies.
