Blink and you’re beautiful this Christmas! Enhance this festive season with lavish eyelashes, guaranteed to turn heads at every Christmas party!

Lorna (Owner and beauty specialist) was one of the first salons in the UK to introduce eyelash extensions. Eyelash extensions are individual lashes that are bonded one by one to your own eyelashes just a fraction away from the eyelid. It is a specialised technique that requires advanced training and lots of patience! Each eye will have between 80 to 160 individual synthetic lashes applied, bonded with special lash glue.

Lorna Eyelash extensions are the perfect way to make the eyes the most beautiful feature. Eyes sparkle and they look amazing from any angle. We are able to cater for clients who wish to use eyelash extension as a discreet yet effective anti aging solution along with offering more dramatic results with longer, thicker and darker enhancements, so beautiful you can’t help but stop and stare at them!

A full set of extensions last up to 3 months and take approximately 1 ½ hrs to apply, with the occasional top ups every 2-4 weeks. Maintenance is low. No mascara required! NEW this month are ENHANCE EXPRESS OCCASION LASHES. Designed for special occasions just like Christmas. These lashes create a full and beautiful effect and are designed to last between 2 to 3 weeks. They are full eyelash extensions but at a fraction of the price. Prices start at £55 ( includes a free consultation) december 2009 |

Easy ways to stay Fit during the Festive Season ….

C

hristmas is almost upon us, and that means the party season has almost begun! If you have got a few pounds to lose or a few lumps and bumps that need smoothing out then don’t despair you can still sizzle and shine in your party dress by following some of these great ways to burn calories and shape up from top to toe…. First of all…..look at your diet, the easiest way to cut calories is to fill up on lots of “good foods” and drink plenty of water and herbal teas. Try and ensure you have lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume. The average adult must burn off 3500 extra calories to lose 1lb of fat…..sounds a lot I know, but by following a healthy diet and being more active it is not as hard as it sounds, look at these easy ways to help you along the way,

Add in an extra class to your timetable If you are currently attending your local gym or fitness studio once or twice a week, try adding an extra class or hour to your workouts and you will see the results quicker in time for the party season. Also exercise has the added benefit of reducing stress as it releases your “Happy Hormones” helping you to feel good about yourself, happier and more confident. The following gives you an idea of the amount of calories you would burn in 1 hour. • • • • • •

Aerobics class (High impact) = 500 calories Aerobics class (Low impact) = 350 calories Aqua Aerobics class = 200 calories Body Combat Class = 500 calories Body Conditioning class (legs, bums + tums) = 350-450 calories Hula Hooping class = 500 calories

Get on your gardening gloves Spending an afternoon in the garden can be a perfect way to get in shape. • • •

Cutting the grass for 30 mins = 300 calories and will help tone up your upper body and tighten the legs, thighs and bottom. Digging for 1 hour = 500 calories, a great way to work the whole body, but remember to keep good form and bend your knees to help protect your back. Painting the fence for 1 hour = 400 calories, all that bending and reaching is a great way to add shape and tone to your arms, shoulders and back.

Forget the treadmill and hit the High Street Use the time for your Christmas shopping as time to tone up your upper body with all those heavy shopping bags and shape up your legs, thighs and bottom with all that walking. • Shopping for 3 hours = 600 – 700 calories!!!

Information on the Fitness classes that Emma teaches can be found at www.lincolnshirefitness.co.uk

Q&A

Turn the housework into a workout We may loath it, but housework is a perfect way to burn calories and helps to tone up your whole body, this may make your household chores a little easier.

Q : Will my muscle turn into fat if I stop exercising over Christmas?

A

: NO.....This is a myth which is completely not true (but something I am asked very often!). Lets get one thing straight: Fat will never turn into muscle and muscle will never turn into fat. The reason is simple. Your body fat and muscles are made up of completely different cell structure and they are so different that they cannot be converted Get into the festive spirit and raise money to each other. • • • • •

Hoovering for 30 mins = 150 calories Washing up for 10 mins = 20 calories Mopping the floor for 30 mins = 130 calories Ironing for 1 hour = 140 calories Re-arranging the furniture for 30 mins = 200 calories

If you love jogging and would like to help raise money for Charity get involved in this year’s British Heart Foundation’s Santa Jog throughout December and you will not only have some fun but you will be given your very own Santa costume to race in!! There are six Santa Jogs across the UK, ranging from 2k to 5k in distance, costing £10 for adults and £5 for under 14’s. This could be a great event for you and your family and friends as you can walk, jog or run. Visit www.bhf.org.uk/santajogs for more information or to sign up.

If you were going to stop exercising for a long period (for example if you have been injured) and start eating unhealthily, gradually you will put on body fat because you are consuming more calories than you need and you are not burning them off through exercise, then your newly acquired body fat will start to cover up your muscles which will make them less noticeable. BUT if you are just having a couple of weeks off you need not worry!!

Your muscle is very much alive and work very hard whereas fat just sits there doing nothing and just plain looking ugly.

HAIR

party

hair

The party season is upon us and the key trend is sophisticated yet understated. Hair is big on style investment - well maintained, lustrous and super shiny it’s ultra-styled but looks organic and naturally glamorous, not severe or contrived.

Words by Ricahrd Ward www.richardward.co.uk

Long and lustrous Red Carpet glamour is more sophisticated and understated again - chic and well-groomed, this is expertly achieved, investment styling. Movement is for mid-lengths and ends only - think Mermaid waves - or go for ultra -sleek , sultry chic. Subtly accessorise with crystal combs, pearls and grips; couture or on-off pieces for ultra chic. Achieve the look by incorporating extra length extensions into the nape to look natural and organic - subtlety is key. The new layered cut - Triangular layers. Forget square cut layers which create definition and movement around the base and have been the foundation of so many cuts for the last decade, these layers are conical. Heavily graduated and retro inspired, they’re cut quite short and choppy at the crown and angled long to marry to the base hairline to create a crescendo and cascade of volume and movement.

3 steps to get the look

1

Spritz in some of my Richard Ward Volume Boost & Hold Double Action Spritz (£4.99 www.richardwardshop.com) through roots. Blow dry in sections and set on Velcro rollers, setting nape downwards and interior vertically (from crown to fringe).

2

Leave to cool then shake out, raking through with fingers. Then, with styling irons, curl random sections (as if curling the ribbon on a present), leaving the finished look tousled and free.

3

Finish with a mist of Elnett - spray and walk into the spray for ultra-fine holding power. Keep some of my Richard Ward Style Revive Smoothing Polish (£5.49) compact in your handbag to re-gloss curls and keep defined during the night! december 2009 | 15

Soft hair-up A key look for winter Red Carpets is the disconnected chignon. Classic, vintage chignons are worn classily and sleek at the nape, with the front worn loose and flowing to make hair look less severe - the result is a soft, effortlessly groomed look which works perfectly on any age and a style juxtaposition to look low key or high glamour.

3 steps to get the look

1

Best on day-old hair (not freshly washed). Take a section from crown to nape and twist into a low slung chignon (where it sits will depend on the length of the bottom layer). Secure.

2 3

Scrunch front, sides and crown and texture into place with some Tecni Art Clay. Tuck behind ears then loosen some tendrils each side and sculpt into place.

Plaited glamour Plaits are still a hot look and make a quick and easy way of transforming any length hair. Their enduring popularity on the red carpet makes them a perennial hit, as they strike the right note between casual, girly glamour and sophisticated siren. Their versatility gives an effortlessly ultra glam look without looking like you’re trying too hard.

3 steps to get the look

1

After styling hair loosely and casually, take a section across the front and plait from side to side. Don’t over-coat with product, use something ultra light like my Richard Ward One More Day Hair Reviver (£4.99) to tame stragglers but not look sticky.

2 3

Tuck ends into the hair or hide with an accessory, flower or clip, neatly pinning above the ear and leaving remaining hair natural and beachy. Experiment by taking two or three sections further back towards the crown, too.

Roasted Turkey • • • • • • • • • • • • •

5kg free-range Golden Promise turkey 1 lemon, quartered 6 Thyme sprigs 1 onion, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 large carrot, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 stick of celery, coarsely chopped 1 bay leaf 2 tbsp plain flour 150ml dry marsala 500ml Turkey stock 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly 4 tbsp rapeseed oil Sea salt and black pepper

Pork Stuffing: • 350g breadcrumbs, made from ciabatta bread • 500g good quality sausage meat • 2 Cox’s apples, peeled and coarsely grated • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped • 00g chopped almonds • 150g parmesan, finely grated • 4 tbsp Flat leaf parsley, chopped • 2 tbsp fresh thyme, finely chopped • 5 eggs, lightly beaten • 100g butter, melted • 6 Cox’s Apples • Sea salt & black pepper Preheat oven to 230°C/Gas Mark 8

1 2

Remove turkey giblets and reserve. Rinse the turkey inside and out and dry well. For the stuffing, combine the breadcrumbs, sausage meat, apple, garlic, almonds, parmesan, chopped herbs, sea salt and black pepper. Stir in the eggs and half of the butter and bind together well. Grease a loaf tin and line the bottom of it with baking parchment paper. Loosely place some of the stuffing into the loaf tin, press down a little, then cover and place in fridge until ready to cook. Take the apples and cut the top off, 1/3 of the way from the top. Remove the core, and fill each apple with the remaining stuffing and

replace the lid. Brush well with rapeseed oil or melted butter and place in the fridge. Place two tablespoons of the stuffing into the small cavity (neck end) of the turkey, pull excess skin over stuffing and secure to underside of turkey with a wooden skewer. Place the turkey in a large roasting pan; fill the large cavity with lemon and thyme sprigs. Brush the turkey generously with rapeseed oil and season with sea salt and black pepper and cover with foil. To make the turkey stock, place the turkey giblets, chopped onion, carrot, celery and bay leaf in a heavy based saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil.

with Pork, Almond and Apple Stuffing and Masala Gravy

Simmer for 2 hours, then strain. Cool and store in the fridge until needed, this can be done the night before. Place the prepared turkey in the pre-heated oven and cook at this temperature for the first 30 minutes. Then, lower the oven temperature to 180°C/Gas Mark 4 and cook for approximately 30 minutes per kilo, basting every hour. Meanwhile cook the stuffing in the loaf tin for 40 - 45 minutes or until golden brown. Approximately 35 minutes before the end of cooking, remove the foil, drain off any of the excess fat and place the stuffed apples around the turkey and cook for a further 35 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer the turkey to a platter, placing the apples around

6 7

it, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 20 - 30 minutes. For the marsala gravy, place the roasting pan over a medium heat, sprinkle over the flour, then gradually stir in the marsala, followed by the turkey stock and bring to the boil. Strain the mixture through a sieve into a saucepan. Add the redcurrant jelly and any juices that have collected on the platter. Stir over a medium heat until the mixture boils; simmer for 10 minutes and season with sea salt and black pepper. Serve the turkey carved with slices of stuffing, stuffed apples and warm marsala gravy.

Lincolnshire Carrot Pudding

Christmas pudding Image courtesy of (www.britishcarrots.co.uk)

This is a really good and light Lincolnshire alternative to a traditional Christmas pudding, particularly if you’re not one of those efficient cooks who has made their steamed puddings months in advance. And if you’ve forgotten all about the pudding, because you were so busy getting to grips with the turkey, this is absolutely ideal for saving the day!

• • • • • • • • • • • •

1

Mix the flour, soda and spice well together. Add all the other ingredients except the egg, mix all ingredients well together and thoroughly. Then add the egg and bind well, if it is a little too stiff, add a little milk as well. Pour into a large greased pudding basin, leaving space at the top as the mixture will expand during cooking. Cover with

100g plain flour ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp of mixed spice 100g suet 100g raisins 100g currants 100g potato, grated 100g carrots, grated 100g Demerara sugar 100g fine breadcrumbs 25g chopped glace cherries 1 large egg, beaten

a double layer of greaseproof paper and tie with string. Steam for 3 hours. Serve with loads of custard, brandy sauce or double cream.

TOYOTA IQ:

CARS

THE NEW CAR FOR TOMORROW’S LOW CARBON SOCIETY

iQ

is a revolutionary vehicle that adds more appeal to Toyota’s range of urban compact cars, a line-up that includes Aygo and Yaris. Toyota expects iQ to attract many new customers to the brand thanks to its breakthrough design and packaging and its driving dynamics. From an environmental perspective, iQ demonstrates how Toyota can offer cars that are exciting and desirable, while still achieving low fuel consumption and emissions. iQ Chief Engineer Hiroki Nakajima explains: “We wanted to create the world’s first, sophisticated four-seat car, measuring less than three metres long, using ultra-effective packaging, a unique design, ultra-low fuel consumption and high driving and safety performance. To achieve this, iQ had to be similar in size to an A-segment car, its performance would have to surpass B-segment standards and interior and exterior quality would have be on the level of C-segment models.” High-quality materials and finish Everything inside iQ communicates a message of quality, from the leathercovered three-spoke steering wheel to the sculpted centre console. The mouldings, materials and finish are of C-segment quality levels. The textured mouldings of the dashboard contrast with woven-style

polymer mouldings around the central instrument cluster and there is a soft-touch quality to key elements, such as the curved surface of the dashboard and the gearshift and parking brake trim. Matching silver paint is applied to the centre console, giving a clean, modern appearance, with the silver coloured door handles adding to the flowing ‘manta ray’ styling. All materials were carefully selected by Toyota and subjected to testing in extreme conditions.

FACTs & Figures PRICE: £9,615.00 (3-door hatchback Toyota Optimal Drive 1.0 VVT-i 68 DIN hp 5 M/T)

Insurance: 2e CO2 Imissions: 99g/km tax: A (£0)

User-friendly interior iQ’s seats have a distinctive design, with slim seatbacks and integrated headrests. They offer plenty of comfort and are actually wider and offer more back support than those in Yaris.

There is room for passengers to stretch their feet out between the front seats, thanks to the clever side-by-side positioning of the gear lever and parking brake. In the front there is a central cupholder and a bottle holder in each door.

Access to the rear is made easy thanks to large handles on the side of both front seats, which can both be slid forward and aft on smooth, solid rails. The slide length for the front passenger seat is 50mm greater than for the driver’s seat.

A storage tray is concealed beneath the rear seats, which, together with a deck box behind the seats, provides room for items to be carried without compromising cabin space. For extra luggage capacity the 50:50 split rear seats can be folded flat.

The rear seat area features three-point seatbelts, Isofix child seat anchors and two cupholders.

175g Camargue red rice 2 tbsp Light olive oil 150g Red onion, finely chopped ½ tsp Cardamom seeds ½ tsp All spice 1 ½ tbsp Raisins 100g Vegetarian feta cheese, in small dice or 40g Pine nuts, (toasted) 3 tbsp Parsley, finely chopped 1 Butternut squash (long fat-stem if possible) 2 Large red peppers, each cut into 8 thick slices 1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar 100g Good quality cranberry sauce ½ Small lemon, juice only

Method

Bring the rice to the boil in a medium sized saucepan and simmer for 20 – 25 minutes, ensuring it still has some “bite”. Using 1 tbsp of the olive oil, sauté the onion until soft and starting to caramelise. Add the spices and raisins and cook for a further 2 minutes. Combine this mixture together with the cooked rice, feta and parsley. (If making vegan, replace the feta with the pine nuts). Peel the stem of the squash with a vegetable peeler and cut into 8 circles approx 1 cm thick and 8-9 cm diameter. Parboil for 2-3 minutes to soften slightly. Heat a large ridged grill pan. Mix the remaining 1 tbsp oil with the vinegar and brush the

squash and peppers with this before char grilling. Keep the cooked vegetables warm in a low oven until ready to assemble the stacks. Melt the cranberry sauce in a small saucepan, adding a tbsp of water if it is very thick. Once warm add the lemon juice and sieve to remove any large pieces. To assemble the stacks place one squash circle in the centre of a dinner plate. Place a 8.5cm ring over/on top of it and press in a quarter of the rice mixture. On top of this place a second circle and decoratively pile a quarter of the grilled peppers. Drizzle over 1-2 tbsp of sauce.

TRAVEL

Hello World! Intrepid travellers Leanne Simons and Simon Holmes go from the top of a glacier to swimming with dolphins during their tour of New Zealand’s south island.

Queenstown

Leanne on Fox glacier

N

ew Zealand’s south island is a place where you can see any type of spectacular landscape you can imagine and because it is such a small island you can see most of it in a three week holiday. From stunning coastlines to huge snow-capped mountains via the bluest lakes and even two glaciers - New Zealand has it all. During our six weeks in the south we tramped (Kiwi word for hiking) a 14km section of the Abel Tasman national park which saw us climb through rainforest with views to golden beaches and clear sea. We also climbed Fox glacier. This was an amazing full day expedition and it was so different to anything else we have ever done. I never imagined I would get to walk on a gigantic piece of ice and explore ice caves or walk through ice tunnels which made me feel like I was inside a giant ice cube. I also never thought I would ever wear crampons or tuck my trousers into thick

woolly red hiking socks. Fashion is something that goes out the window when doing any adventure activity in New Zealand. We went tubing on a river along the west coast which saw us wear four layers of clothing including long johns and waders. Not a good look! In Queenstown we walked a very long way uphill to be rewarded with amazing views and did the same in Lake Tekapo to check out the bluest water we have ever seen. Perhaps the most memorable excursion we have done was swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura on the east coast. Being in the water surrounded by dozens of dusky dolphins and looking one in the eye while swimming in a circle with him is something that I will never forget. Now Christmas is fast approaching and it is time for us to head to the tenth country on our round the world trip - Australia. We will be spending Christmas on Cottesloe beach in Perth and will see in 2010 on a boat in Sydney Harbour. It will be strange to celebrate Christmas in the scorching heat but I’m sure we’ll cope!

Interview

When Anne Louise was given the chance to interview Una from The Saturdays we jumped at the chance... The Saturdays are set to continue their run of chart smashes with the release of Ego, the second single from their new album Wordshaker. Ego is released on 4th January through Geffen/Fascination Records. Frankie, Mollie, Rochelle, Una and Vanessa are regulars in the upper echelons of the charts and Ego is likely to continue that run. Backed by a thumping beat and some killer synth riffs the girls deal with an arrogant lover, telling him exactly where to go. “Ego is about someone in your life who has changed dramatically,” says Una. “They go from being the best friend who shares everything to being a big-headed egotist! The song is a way of taking them down a peg or two and warning them that they will lose everyone and end up very lonely if they don’t lose the ego.” Ego is set to give the girls another smash hit, alongside the likes of previous hits Issues, Up and If This Is Love. The video for Ego sees the girls all play characters with superhero abilities. Vanessa has voodoo powers, Una can spontaneously combust things, Rochelle’s specialty is creating ice, Frankie controls electricity and Mollie can summon storms. The villain of the video is Mr X, the epitome of ego. The group recently had the honour of turning on London’s Oxford Street Christmas lights, with Hollywood superstar Jim Carrey and Peter Andre all joining the line up for the biggest-ever such event. 2010 is set to be another busy year for The Saturdays as they are set to go international with plans to release Wordshaker in Europe and Asia.

How’s your promotion of your new album going so far? “Well today (14th October) is our first signing we are on route to Newcastle to do a signing there and then tomorrow we head down to Manchester and then into Brighton.” What was you doing before you joined The Saturdays? “That seems such a long time ago since before The Saturdays I can’t even remember what I was doing! I was in Ireland so I moved over specially for the band.” 42 | december 2009

So you had to leave all your family behind? “Yeah, I had to leave everything behind and that was over 2 and half years ago. I was a singer in Ireland and I used to travel around doing a lot of gigs and watch the different bands recording. I was in the music business back home.” What’s the best thing about being well know? “I think the best thing is we get a few freebies. Companies give you products because you are seen wearing it or mention it in an interview. So that can be really cool!”

What is your favorite music video you have shot? “Sometimes while shooting them is not fun, watching them back is. For instance, Issues, that is a lovely video but it was so cold that day filming. It looks really cool but we were in a grimy warehouse, one point we were shooting and it was really greasy and dirty on the ground and trying to look sexy when your stepping in a puddle of oil is not easy. It’s a lot different than it looks. I think my favorite/best video is ‘Just Can’t get enough’, it was so much fun and something was always happening. I think people enjoy watching the video as there is a lot of variety going on and every time you saw one of us we were doing something different . It was actually the easiest one to shoot as it was so quick, you’d go in and do your piece and then change into another outfit and do another piece.” I suppose that somes through when you are watching it if you are enjoying it and not cold! “You have to be a bit of an actor as well. You don’t realise when you get into a band your going to be shooting music videos and your acting. You’re not being completely yourself.” Will you be following in the Spice girls footsteps and bringing out a movie? “We haven’t been in any talks about It but I think it’s something we could possibly do. We film ourselves a lot with our film cams and that so it’s part of our lifes anyway but I think making a proper movie would be even better. I’d love to do that.” Do you have any rituals before going on stage? “We all give each other a high five and have honey and ginger water drink. We are not massive demanders or divas!” What did you go out and buy first when you realised your first single was a hit? “Well for me it was just ,oh thank God I can pay my rent! I haven’t really seen an awful lot of money coming through to splash out on things. It takes time. You hear a lot of bands saying you don’t make any money until the second album. My recent biggest purchase was my dog.” Have you ever been given a piece of advice that has stuck with you? “Emma Bunton gave us a piece of advice, she said ‘We really need to saviour each moment and try and live for the moment because sometimes it goes by so quickly that you think to yourself did that actually happen.’”

Is there anything that has surprised you about being famous? “Well it didn’t surprise me, but when people speak about you in the media and they say things that were never said, they twist your words, that isn’t very nice. At the end of the day people are talking about your character and as a person. You have to comeback to your fans and explain you never said that. Most of them, your true fans will believe you but there always those others that will question it. It’s tough.” Is there anyone you would meet that would make you starstruck and lost for words? “We actually got a little bit like that with Take That. When we met them I couldn’t stop staring and saying, oh my God, Take That are in front of me! It kept running through my head this is Take That, you are standing there opposite to Take That. I get starstruck by most people, not to the point I can’t speak I get that little feeling when you meet someone.” When you do manage to get any time off how do relax and unwind? “I usually have a bath in the evening when I have a bit of time to relax. Spending time with my boyfriend cook dinner and watch a movie, just the normal things. I try to just chill out and try to sleep as much as I can as well.” Have you got any tips on how to achieve your gorgeous looking hair? “Number one is if you can find a really good hairdresser. Our hairdresser Nick is great and he gets our hair looking all lovely. We go in looking not so good and Nina our make up artist and Nick works wonders on us . A lot of it is down to them. We are constantly having it styled but try not to use too much heat, try to let it dry naturally. Condition it and use treatments once a week and also have a trim every 6 weeks.” How will you be celebrating Christmas, with your family or with the girls? “We are working so hard these days but we are getting some time off and it happens to be at Christmas. Because I don’t get to go home very much I’m really looking forward to going back to Ireland to spend Christmas with my family.”

The Lady is a

Vamp! By Armand Beasley

With all the attention on various Vampire movies and tv series it’s no wonder that cosmetic companies are turning to the Dark Side with shades of purple, midnight blue and grey dominating the eyes. Lips are either nude, red or black! Well I’m going to put together a look that will bring out your inner Goth! Complexion should be luminous! If you have dull or mature skin and want to get your glow back then invest in Sisley’s Radiance Concentrate, an intensive anti-aging treatment for your skin to help restore youthful radiance. Get a foundation that suits your skin type: the best oil free has to be Sisley’s Phytoteint eclat (1). For a dewy finish try Armani’s Silk Fluid Foundation . Start from the nose and apply outwards using a foundation brush. Only use concealer around the eyes....like Clinique’s Airbrush concealer (2) . Mac’s Blotting Powder will keep the T-Zone shine free. Givenchy’s Christmas Pearl collection has something for everyone...I love the shades of grey in the Elegant Pearl eyeshadow prism. For full-on lashes stay with Givenchy and use their Phenomen’eyes Mascara then apply a coat of Lancome’s Shimmering Top Coat for a dazzling effect! (3) For a very dramatic look apply Estee Lauder’s Double Wear black eyepencil on the inside of the eye, it has great

staying ‘power’ yet it’s very soft. Keep the eyebrows full but groomed. YSL, Clinique and Armani all do great brow pencils that have a brush at one end that you can spray with hairspray then comb through to tame the most unruly brows. Next move onto lips. If you have gone heavy on the eyes then of course go softer with the lips with shades of beige. Or if you want more attention on your lips go for Georgio Armani’s red lippy in shade 400 (4)....the most stunning red. Mac have even got a black ltd edition lipstick for the most daring of you. Blusher is really important for this look so invest in a soft pink blusher on the ‘apples’ of the cheeks (use a cream one if you have dry skin), then a touch of bronzer under the cheekbones to help emphasise the bone structure. Nails complete the look; apply M&S Autograph Ultimate Nail Varnish in Dark Aubergine (5) for a truly fang-tastic look! BEAUTY

Armand Beasley Glamour guru and celebrity make-up artist

C

elebrity make-up artist Armand Beasley helps you turn into a vamp this Christmas with our great ‘She’s a Vamp’ feature. Here we introduce you to the Glamour guru... Starting off as an actor, Armand toured for over two years in various productions ranging from the Crucible to Midsummer Nights Dream. During his ‘resting’ periods he decided to gain other skills and so began his career within the cosmetic industry. He’s appeared in Emmerdale, Cutting It, The Chase and Coronation Street and a BBC radio 3 play, ‘The First Day of the Rest of Our Lives’ for the Wire. Having extensive training in skincare, makeup and fragrance with most of the major cosmetic companies, Armand set up the ‘Personal Beauty studio’ in conjunction with House of Fraser. Regular slots on GMTV involved members of the public; from ‘Wild and Wearable’ makeup, which involved a mother and daughter creating different looks using the same makeup, to ‘Black Beauty’, an item giving tips to women of colour whilst tackling subjects like Vitiligo. Armand created a series for Discovery Home and Health channel called ‘Fakeover’ where he stopped people in the street to transform them. More recently he has contributed to shows like Channel 4’s ‘How to Look Good Naked’, RTE’s ‘The Afternoon Show’ and the BBC’s ‘Magic Number’. Passionate about beauty and the fact that anybody can look and feel great, Armand writes and contributes beauty columns to various publications including the Manchester Evening News, The Herald (Ireland), H! Society (Spain), Now, Closer, Vogue, Yours magazine and of course Lush Life! Here at Lush Life we were very jealous to hear that Armand had interviewed many celebrities on the red carpet like Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Vivica Fox and Mario Van Peebles. Other celebrity 46 | december 2009

interviews include pop stars Sophie Ellis Bexter, Christina Milian and the Backstreet Boys. Armand has appeared on TV makeovers and road shows with various celebrity hairdressers including: Mark Hill, Nicky Clarke, Andrew Barton, James Galvin, Beverley C, Trevor Sorbie and Andrew Collinge. He regularly fronts positive motivational beauty seminars which range from 120 people to 2000 people! Currently an ambassador for the Special Olympics Great Britain, Armand enjoys raising funds for charities. Famous faces who have had the Armand glamour guru treatment include: Jane Seymour, Myleene Klass, Shobna Gulati, Samia Smith (Coronation Street), Naomi Campbell, Daryl Hannah, Angela Griffin, Zoe Lucker, Natalie Cassidy (East Enders), Lesley Garrett and model Sophie Anderton. He might have worked extensively on an international scale from exotic photo shoots to the Oscars, but his down to earth nature and sense of humour ensure his feet stay firmly on the ground, no matter who his client is. After all, everyone deserves star treatment!

HOROSCOPES Aries

Taurus

Gemini

With Mighty Uranus now direct at the beginning of the month, you’ll get a chance to clear up instability that seems to be going on round about you. You will be given the opportunity to get to the bottom of problems, on many different levels. You may also make a connection to institutions, like hospitals, too. Mars, your ruling planet, is dramatically carving a way through anything in the creative and fun part of your chart and making an amazing impact in the process. But it will go retrograde on 20th and will ask you to go over the things that have changed for you. Lucky you as this is your Christmas, with the moon in your sign. Try to: Pull out all the stops For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1220

With Venus, your ruling planet, entering Sagittarius at the beginning of the month and Uranus going direct, this is a strong and ambitious time with revelation and revolution over your hopes and expectations. This will make many goals achievable this month. Venus in this part of your chart could blow your mind, as far as love is concerned, as passions could be explosive, so expect an eventful Christmas. You’ll also be your usual thoughtful self, and others won’t fail to recognise this. Plans for the long term have to be taken into account and there will be a major turning point at new year, with Pluto changing things in a very substantial way indeed. Try to: Be a loving Santa Claus For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1221

From the word go it is head down with everything to do with your career. Even if there’s disruption, you’ll want to identify with great change. Uranus’ direct motion gives you the chance that you have been waiting for, and I want you to grab it. This is the month when you normally become rather cynical and bar humbug about Christmas but, with Venus’ move into Sagittarius, it may catch you out and take you to a place where you have to look at relationships. Come the 22nd, the Scrooge factor disappears and you turn into Christmas trees, frost and fairies. Try to: Keep up with the Christmas pace For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1222

Cancer

Leo

Virgo

With Uranus making you very aware of how to gain insight into so much now, it also reveals that if you remain flexible you will hit the nail right on the head. Mars has been making you adamant about your financial world, whether that is saving money or making things happen. It’s held you in good stead so far. But on 20th, and as it goes backwards, it may slow down that impetus, so look carefully around that time at financial commitments. Venus in Sagittarius brings your support network very much to the fore and you’ll no doubt show your usual appreciation. Your Christmas is very public this year. Enjoy it. Try to: Bask in the spotlight For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1223

Be aware of powerful subconscious forces now operating once again in your life. Could it be out with the old and in with the new? This is a wonderful month to be individual, that’s for sure, so pull out all the stops. Whatever finances are jointly held need to be looked at again and put into a permanent vein. It’s all systems go until 20th, when Mars goes backwards in your sign, and asks you to look over exactly what it is that you have changed in past six weeks. Venus in your sister sign of Sagittarius will bring a fun-loving and flirty Festive period. But the climax will be Christmas itself. Try to: Calm the fire – or not at all! For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1224

One-to-one relationships take up most of your time this month, and with Uranus going direct anything remotely shaky in partnerships needs to be looked at. But if things are secure you will weather the storm, as per usual. Recently, with Mars in Leo, you have felt you have lost a little bit of your fighting spirit. I would agree. The saving grace is Venus’ move into Sagittarius, making your home life, especially at Christmas, very big indeed. The moon in Aries could spell either a subtle or blatant Christmas. Enjoy the party atmosphere. Try to: Make the best of Christmas For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1225

Opportunities galore come at work right from the outset this month, but remember obligations to things that are ongoing before you take off in new directions and scatter all your energy. At the same time Venus, your ruling planet, in Sagittarius, makes this an incredibly busy time. You won’t have to travel very far for some Christmas cheer as you’ll probably find it right on your doorstep and, with that love, too. Trying to balance work and love will take up all your time and remember that Christmas belongs to relationships of all kinds. Try to: Bring light into Christmas For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1226

You are definitely up for a fun-filled month and your approach may be somewhat revolutionary and this brings excitement into yours and others’ lives. From a party and a good time at the drop of a hat, to fullon flirting – it’s all yours this month. With Venus in Sagittarius, you’ll be looking to own worth in love and fun. Just one drawback: spending may become a problem if you let it, so don’t burn the plastic. Mars has been very fortunate in your public life making you dynamic and from 20th onwards, although that may begin to cool down. Whatever way you want to spend Christmas, you’ll work at it. Try to: Get some rest For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1227

Not just this month, but for a long time, you have been trying to rectify things in roots of your life. Now with Uranus going direct, you look at this again in greater detail. Things connected to home life, family and roots may require that you look for a new sense of freedom, in order for you to feel more content. Venus resides in your sign from now until over Christmas, and you couldn’t hope for a better planet to be on your side. Love, laughter and passions all make for what will be an amazing Christmas. Capricorn

Your everyday sense of predictability and reliability may be knocked off kilter as new ideas reach your life, especially over communications. Your directness may shock a lot of people in your life who know you best, as Pluto in your sign pushes you to change course and go in a new direction. This Christmas is made all the more special as a result and you should try hard not to get into martyrdom when it comes to love this month as, come the 23rd, you become the Regal Sign that tells us that Christmas is upon us! Try to: Lead by example For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1229

For the last few months with Uranus, your ruling planet, going backwards you may have felt caged in. Not any longer. Your sense of freedom returns and you will become much more flexible and not so gripped by old fears. There is a new level of change waiting for you and it is extremely exciting. You are back in a place that says you know exactly what it is you want and you are going after it. Venus in Sagittarius opens up a love angle, but not in a flirty way. I am talking profound. Expect a sociable and busy Christmas. Try to: Welcome all-comers For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1230

After a few months of feeling you have been treading through mud, this all changes now. Uranus direct in your sign means that you radically redefine your relationship with outside world. You could act in ways that are quite unexpected and this may upset the applecart with friends and family. There’ll be no more limitations for you either, as Venus puts you under the spotlight and a radical new look could happen for you. The Christmas you get will hinge on what it is that you feel you deserve. Indulge Christmas, for it should be your time.
