Easy ways to stay Fit during the Festive Season ….

hristmas is almost upon us, and that means the party season has almost begun! If you have got a few pounds to lose or a few lumps and bumps that need smoothing out then don’t despair you can still sizzle and shine in your party dress by following some of these great ways to burn calories and shape up from top to toe…. First of all…..look at your diet, the easiest way to cut calories is to fill up on lots of “good foods” and drink plenty of water and herbal teas. Try and ensure you have lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume. The average adult must burn off 3500 extra calories to lose 1lb of fat…..sounds a lot I know, but by following a healthy diet and being more active it is not as hard as it sounds, look at these easy ways to help you along the way,
Add in an extra class to your timetable If you are currently attending your local gym or fitness studio once or twice a week, try adding an extra class or hour to your workouts and you will see the results quicker in time for the party season. Also exercise has the added benefit of reducing stress as it releases your “Happy Hormones” helping you to feel good about yourself, happier and more confident. The following gives you an idea of the amount of calories you would burn in 1 hour. • • • • • •
Aerobics class (High impact) = 500 calories Aerobics class (Low impact) = 350 calories Aqua Aerobics class = 200 calories Body Combat Class = 500 calories Body Conditioning class (legs, bums + tums) = 350-450 calories Hula Hooping class = 500 calories
Get on your gardening gloves Spending an afternoon in the garden can be a perfect way to get in shape. • • •
Cutting the grass for 30 mins = 300 calories and will help tone up your upper body and tighten the legs, thighs and bottom. Digging for 1 hour = 500 calories, a great way to work the whole body, but remember to keep good form and bend your knees to help protect your back. Painting the fence for 1 hour = 400 calories, all that bending and reaching is a great way to add shape and tone to your arms, shoulders and back.
Forget the treadmill and hit the High Street Use the time for your Christmas shopping as time to tone up your upper body with all those heavy shopping bags and shape up your legs, thighs and bottom with all that walking. • Shopping for 3 hours = 600 – 700 calories!!!

Turn the housework into a workout We may loath it, but housework is a perfect way to burn calories and helps to tone up your whole body, this may make your household chores a little easier.
Q : Will my muscle turn into fat if I stop exercising over Christmas?
A
: NO.....This is a myth which is completely not true (but something I am asked very often!). Lets get one thing straight: Fat will never turn into muscle and muscle will never turn into fat. The reason is simple. Your body fat and muscles are made up of completely different cell structure and they are so different that they cannot be converted Get into the festive spirit and raise money to each other. • • • • •
Hoovering for 30 mins = 150 calories Washing up for 10 mins = 20 calories Mopping the floor for 30 mins = 130 calories Ironing for 1 hour = 140 calories Re-arranging the furniture for 30 mins = 200 calories

If you were going to stop exercising for a long period (for example if you have been injured) and start eating unhealthily, gradually you will put on body fat because you are consuming more calories than you need and you are not burning them off through exercise, then your newly acquired body fat will start to cover up your muscles which will make them less noticeable. The party season is upon us and the key trend is sophisticated yet understated. Hair is big on style investment - well maintained, lustrous and super shiny it’s ultra-styled but looks organic and naturally glamorous, not severe or contrived.

Long and lustrous Red Carpet glamour is more sophisticated and understated again - chic and well-groomed, this is expertly achieved, investment styling. Movement is for mid-lengths and ends only - think Mermaid waves - or go for ultra -sleek , sultry chic. Subtly accessorise with crystal combs, pearls and grips; couture or on-off pieces for ultra chic. Achieve the look by incorporating extra length extensions into the nape to look natural and organic - subtlety is key. The new layered cut - Triangular layers. Forget square cut layers which create definition and movement around the base and have been the foundation of so many cuts for the last decade, these layers are conical. Heavily graduated and retro inspired, they’re cut quite short and choppy at the crown and angled long to marry to the base hairline to create a crescendo and cascade of volume and movement.

Best on day-old hair (not freshly washed). Take a section from crown to nape and twist into a low slung chignon (where it sits will depend on the length of the bottom layer). Secure.

Roasted Turkey • • • • • • • • • • • • •
5kg free-range Golden Promise turkey 1 lemon, quartered 6 Thyme sprigs 1 onion, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 large carrot, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 stick of celery, coarsely chopped 1 bay leaf 2 tbsp plain flour 150ml dry marsala 500ml Turkey stock 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly 4 tbsp rapeseed oil Sea salt and black pepper
Pork Stuffing: • 350g breadcrumbs, made from ciabatta bread • 500g good quality sausage meat • 2 Cox’s apples, peeled and coarsely grated • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped • 00g chopped almonds • 150g parmesan, finely grated • 4 tbsp Flat leaf parsley, chopped • 2 tbsp fresh thyme, finely chopped • 5 eggs, lightly beaten • 100g butter, melted • 6 Cox’s Apples • Sea salt & black pepper Preheat oven to 230°C/Gas Mark 8

Remove turkey giblets and reserve. Rinse the turkey inside and out and dry well. For the stuffing, combine the breadcrumbs, sausage meat, apple, garlic, almonds, parmesan, chopped herbs, sea salt and black pepper. Stir in the eggs and half of the butter and bind together well. Grease a loaf tin and line the bottom of it with baking parchment paper. Loosely place some of the stuffing into the loaf tin, press down a little, then cover and place in fridge until ready to cook. Take the apples and cut the top off, 1/3 of the way from the top. Remove the core, and fill each apple with the remaining stuffing and

replace the lid. Brush well with rapeseed oil or melted butter and place in the fridge. Place two tablespoons of the stuffing into the small cavity (neck end) of the turkey, pull excess skin over stuffing and secure to underside of turkey with a wooden skewer. Place the turkey in a large roasting pan; fill the large cavity with lemon and thyme sprigs. Brush the turkey generously with rapeseed oil and season with sea salt and black pepper and cover with foil. To make the turkey stock, place the turkey giblets, chopped onion, carrot, celery and bay leaf in a heavy based saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil.

Simmer for 2 hours, then strain. Cool and store in the fridge until needed, this can be done the night before. Place the prepared turkey in the pre-heated oven and cook at this temperature for the first 30 minutes. Then, lower the oven temperature to 180°C/Gas Mark 4 and cook for approximately 30 minutes per kilo, basting every hour. Meanwhile cook the stuffing in the loaf tin for 40 - 45 minutes or until golden brown. Approximately 35 minutes before the end of cooking, remove the foil, drain off any of the excess fat and place the stuffed apples around the turkey and cook for a further 35 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer the turkey to a platter, placing the apples around

it, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 20 - 30 minutes. For the marsala gravy, place the roasting pan over a medium heat, sprinkle over the flour, then gradually stir in the marsala, followed by the turkey stock and bring to the boil. Strain the mixture through a sieve into a saucepan. Add the redcurrant jelly and any juices that have collected on the platter. Stir over a medium heat until the mixture boils; simmer for 10 minutes and season with sea salt and black pepper. Serve the turkey carved with slices of stuffing, stuffed apples and warm marsala gravy.

This is a really good and light Lincolnshire alternative to a traditional Christmas pudding, particularly if you’re not one of those efficient cooks who has made their steamed puddings months in advance. And if you’ve forgotten all about the pudding, because you were so busy getting to grips with the turkey, this is absolutely ideal for saving the day!

Mix the flour, soda and spice well together. Add all the other ingredients except the egg, mix all ingredients well together and thoroughly. Then add the egg and bind well, if it is a little too stiff, add a little milk as well. Pour into a large greased pudding basin, leaving space at the top as the mixture will expand during cooking. Cover with
100g plain flour ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp of mixed spice 100g suet 100g raisins 100g currants 100g potato, grated 100g carrots, grated 100g Demerara sugar 100g fine breadcrumbs 25g chopped glace cherries 1 large egg, beaten
a double layer of greaseproof paper and tie with string. Steam for 3 hours. Serve with loads of custard, brandy sauce or double cream.

175g Camargue red rice 2 tbsp Light olive oil 150g Red onion, finely chopped ½ tsp Cardamom seeds ½ tsp All spice 1 ½ tbsp Raisins 100g Vegetarian feta cheese, in small dice or 40g Pine nuts, (toasted) 3 tbsp Parsley, finely chopped 1 Butternut squash (long fat-stem if possible) 2 Large red peppers, each cut into 8 thick slices 1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar 100g Good quality cranberry sauce ½ Small lemon, juice only

Bring the rice to the boil in a medium sized saucepan and simmer for 20 – 25 minutes, ensuring it still has some “bite”. Using 1 tbsp of the olive oil, sauté the onion until soft and starting to caramelise. Add the spices and raisins and cook for a further 2 minutes. Combine this mixture together with the cooked rice, feta and parsley. (If making vegan, replace the feta with the pine nuts). Peel the stem of the squash with a vegetable peeler and cut into 8 circles approx 1 cm thick and 8-9 cm diameter. Parboil for 2-3 minutes to soften slightly. Heat a large ridged grill pan. Mix the remaining 1 tbsp oil with the vinegar and brush the

squash and peppers with this before char grilling. Keep the cooked vegetables warm in a low oven until ready to assemble the stacks. Melt the cranberry sauce in a small saucepan, adding a tbsp of water if it is very thick. Once warm add the lemon juice and sieve to remove any large pieces. To assemble the stacks place one squash circle in the centre of a dinner plate. Place a 8.5cm ring over/on top of it and press in a quarter of the rice mixture. On top of this place a second circle and decoratively pile a quarter of the grilled peppers. Drizzle over 1-2 tbsp of sauce.

Raspberry Truffle Torte Serves 6-8 PREPERATION TIME 20 minutes CHILL/FREEZE TIME 1-3 hour
225g Raspberries 200g Plain chocolate 175g Ceamed coconut 100g Unsalted butter or solid vegan margarine 2tbsp Crème de cassis 200g Vegetarian / vegan rustic style biscuits, crushed For the coulis 225g Raspberries to taste Icing sugar 2tbsp Crème de cassis To decorate Reserved raspberries and sprigs of mint

Lightly oil a 1 ½ lb loaf tin with vegetable oil and line the base and sides with baking parchment. Reserve a few raspberries for decoration and roughly chop the rest. Set on one side. Melt the chocolate, creamed coconut and butter/Tomor together over a gentle heat. Stir the crème de cassis, raspberries and crushed biscuits into the melted mixture and mix well. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and lightly press down. Cover and chill for 3 hours or quick freeze for 1-2 hours.

Make the coulis: puree the raspberries in a food processor. Add icing sugar to taste. Add the crème de cassis and puree again. Strain the sauce through a nylon sieve to remove all the pips. Taste and adjust the sweetness again if necessary. Chill until required. Unmould the torte and cut into thin slices. Cut each slice in half diagonally and arrange with one half overlapping the other on individual serving plates. Decorate with reserved raspberries, coulis, and mint sprigs, and serve.

N
ew Zealand’s south island is a place where you can see any type of spectacular landscape you can imagine and because it is such a small island you can see most of it in a three week holiday. From stunning coastlines to huge snow-capped mountains via the bluest lakes and even two glaciers - New Zealand has it all. During our six weeks in the south we tramped (Kiwi word for hiking) a 14km section of the Abel Tasman national park which saw us climb through rainforest with views to golden beaches and clear sea. We also climbed Fox glacier. This was an amazing full day expedition and it was so different to anything else we have ever done. I never imagined I would get to walk on a gigantic piece of ice and explore ice caves or walk through ice tunnels which made me feel like I was inside a giant ice cube. I also never thought I would ever wear crampons or tuck my trousers into thick
woolly red hiking socks. Fashion is something that goes out the window when doing any adventure activity in New Zealand. We went tubing on a river along the west coast which saw us wear four layers of clothing including long johns and waders. Not a good look! In Queenstown we walked a very long way uphill to be rewarded with amazing views and did the same in Lake Tekapo to check out the bluest water we have ever seen. Perhaps the most memorable excursion we have done was swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura on the east coast. Being in the water surrounded by dozens of dusky dolphins and looking one in the eye while swimming in a circle with him is something that I will never forget. Now Christmas is fast approaching and it is time for us to head to the tenth country on our round the world trip - Australia. We will be spending Christmas on Cottesloe beach in Perth and will see in 2010 on a boat in Sydney Harbour. It will be strange to celebrate Christmas in the scorching heat but I’m sure we’ll cope!

When Anne Louise was given the chance to interview Una from The Saturdays we jumped at the chance... The Saturdays are set to continue their run of chart smashes with the release of Ego, the second single from their new album Wordshaker. Ego is released on 4th January through Geffen/Fascination Records. Frankie, Mollie, Rochelle, Una and Vanessa are regulars in the upper echelons of the charts and Ego is likely to continue that run. Backed by a thumping beat and some killer synth riffs the girls deal with an arrogant lover, telling him exactly where to go. “Ego is about someone in your life who has changed dramatically,” says Una. “They go from being the best friend who shares everything to being a big-headed egotist! The song is a way of taking them down a peg or two and warning them that they will lose everyone and end up very lonely if they don’t lose the ego.” Ego is set to give the girls another smash hit, alongside the likes of previous hits Issues, Up and If This Is Love. The video for Ego sees the girls all play characters with superhero abilities. Vanessa has voodoo powers, Una can spontaneously combust things, Rochelle’s specialty is creating ice, Frankie controls electricity and Mollie can summon storms. The villain of the video is Mr X, the epitome of ego. The group recently had the honour of turning on London’s Oxford Street Christmas lights, with Hollywood superstar Jim Carrey and Peter Andre all joining the line up for the biggest-ever such event. 2010 is set to be another busy year for The Saturdays as they are set to go international with plans to release Wordshaker in Europe and Asia.
How’s your promotion of your new album going so far? “Well today (14th October) is our first signing we are on route to Newcastle to do a signing there and then tomorrow we head down to Manchester and then into Brighton.” What was you doing before you joined The Saturdays? “That seems such a long time ago since before The Saturdays I can’t even remember what I was doing! I was in Ireland so I moved over specially for the band.” 42 | december 2009
So you had to leave all your family behind? “Yeah, I had to leave everything behind and that was over 2 and half years ago. I was a singer in Ireland and I used to travel around doing a lot of gigs and watch the different bands recording. I was in the music business back home.” What’s the best thing about being well know? “I think the best thing is we get a few freebies. Companies give you products because you are seen wearing it or mention it in an interview. So that can be really cool!”
What is your favorite music video you have shot? “Sometimes while shooting them is not fun, watching them back is. For instance, Issues, that is a lovely video but it was so cold that day filming. It looks really cool but we were in a grimy warehouse, one point we were shooting and it was really greasy and dirty on the ground and trying to look sexy when your stepping in a puddle of oil is not easy. It’s a lot different than it looks. I think my favorite/best video is ‘Just Can’t get enough’, it was so much fun and something was always happening. I think people enjoy watching the video as there is a lot of variety going on and every time you saw one of us we were doing something different . It was actually the easiest one to shoot as it was so quick, you’d go in and do your piece and then change into another outfit and do another piece.” I suppose that somes through when you are watching it if you are enjoying it and not cold! “You have to be a bit of an actor as well. You don’t realise when you get into a band your going to be shooting music videos and your acting. You’re not being completely yourself.” Will you be following in the Spice girls footsteps and bringing out a movie? “We haven’t been in any talks about It but I think it’s something we could possibly do. We film ourselves a lot with our film cams and that so it’s part of our lifes anyway but I think making a proper movie would be even better. I’d love to do that.” Do you have any rituals before going on stage? “We all give each other a high five and have honey and ginger water drink. We are not massive demanders or divas!” What did you go out and buy first when you realised your first single was a hit? “Well for me it was just ,oh thank God I can pay my rent! I haven’t really seen an awful lot of money coming through to splash out on things. It takes time. You hear a lot of bands saying you don’t make any money until the second album. My recent biggest purchase was my dog.” Have you ever been given a piece of advice that has stuck with you? “Emma Bunton gave us a piece of advice, she said ‘We really need to saviour each moment and try and live for the moment because sometimes it goes by so quickly that you think to yourself did that actually happen.’”
Is there anything that has surprised you about being famous? “Well it didn’t surprise me, but when people speak about you in the media and they say things that were never said, they twist your words, that isn’t very nice. At the end of the day people are talking about your character and as a person. You have to comeback to your fans and explain you never said that. Most of them, your true fans will believe you but there always those others that will question it. It’s tough.” Is there anyone you would meet that would make you starstruck and lost for words? “We actually got a little bit like that with Take That. When we met them I couldn’t stop staring and saying, oh my God, Take That are in front of me! It kept running through my head this is Take That, you are standing there opposite to Take That. I get starstruck by most people, not to the point I can’t speak I get that little feeling when you meet someone.” When you do manage to get any time off how do relax and unwind? “I usually have a bath in the evening when I have a bit of time to relax. Spending time with my boyfriend cook dinner and watch a movie, just the normal things. I try to just chill out and try to sleep as much as I can as well.” Have you got any tips on how to achieve your gorgeous looking hair? “Number one is if you can find a really good hairdresser. Our hairdresser Nick is great and he gets our hair looking all lovely. We go in looking not so good and Nina our make up artist and Nick works wonders on us . A lot of it is down to them. We are constantly having it styled but try not to use too much heat, try to let it dry naturally. Condition it and use treatments once a week and also have a trim every 6 weeks.” How will you be celebrating Christmas, with your family or with the girls? “We are working so hard these days but we are getting some time off and it happens to be at Christmas. Because I don’t get to go home very much I’m really looking forward to going back to Ireland to spend Christmas with my family.”
