Duffy is back. After The Grammys (nominated for three, won for Best Pop Vocal Album), The Brits (nominated for four, won three including Best Album), 6.5 million sales (virtually unheard of these days), not to mention going to number one all over Europe and properly cracking America, it would have been reasonable to think she might return with ‘Rockferry Part Two’. In fact, she’s done nothing of the sort. Released this November, Duffy’s remarkable second album, ‘Endlessly’, shows several new sides to one of our most successful soul singers. “I’m not the same as I was back then,” she says. “I was just a girl back then.” Your new album ‘Endlessly’ is coming out, are you excited by it? Do you see this as the next step in your career? I think the next few years in my life are going to be the telling years as to who I truly become as an artist. It’s one thing being catapulted on the public scene and the people’s conciousness, it’s another thing really setting your mark as you develop through the years. So, yes, I’m very excited because I really think this record solidifies certain parts of myself that I’ve needed to solidify So do you think it’s more of a personal record this time? I don’t know. I don’t know about being a personal record, I don’t think there is such a thing. I think you’re so emotionally engaged and emotionally involved in what you do as an artist when you write the songs. I don’t know if it’s more personal but of course through the experiences I’ve had, I’ve possibly learnt to become a bit more eloquent on how I say things more directly, that’s something that I feel as though I’ve experienced Would you say, with the success of ‘Rockferry’, that you have become more confident in your abilities as a performer and a songwriter? I think you become more convicted, but whether or not you become more confident I’m unsure of, I don’t think I will ever be confident, I think that would make me too self assured. Being confident as an artist is a dangerous quality. You’re working with Albert Hammond, how did you find that experience? The man is a living legend… For me it was just like a wild card. Who knew that we were going to write a whole record together. It was just a chance meeting, we sat together and thought ok, hi, how are you? It was never set in stone that we were going to become the best of friends and so I look back and think, wow, such an important introduction and I just

didn’t realise how important this character was going to become in my life. The person that I would share such an important experience with, where I would be able to carve out so many different elements of myself. I think, at times, when I look through my life, I have been alone. I have consciously been alone and gone to places alone. I travelled from Wales to London to go and work with Bernard. I would go to New York alone to meet people out there, all these different things and always alone. I never felt alone with Albert, I never did. I felt as though I was in the hands of someone truly exceptional Have you got any expectations yourself about how your album will be received or how you hope it will be received? I don’t think I could judge. I really don’t know what I have to offer and what my appeal is, it’s something I will never understand, and that again goes back to a lack of self-awareness. I don’t really know what my strong points are in terms of how other people perceive me. I know what I’m good at, I know what I’m not good at, but how other people accept me is completely up to them. The whole promotional schedule is now gearing up, is that something you enjoy, you are an international artist so, I can only imagine what the work load would be like… Yeah the workload, it’s never been an issue either, I’m a bit of an insomniac! I need to give a lot to feel as though I’m contributing. The work load? Its more the demands, its more the trying to be in different places, the knowing that you have a global demand, that can be so daunting if I allow myself to think of it. The fact I’ve got to make a trip to Japan, back to New York, back to L.A, then again to France, back to Germany or go to Australia, all the while wanting to remain a British artist

Obviously, with you being so in demand, are you still taken aback, that people want to see you, people want to hear you, that everyone is wanting a piece of Duffy? I’m not sure, who knows what we’ll be talking about. I can only do my side of the bargain. Do people want a piece of me? Do they all want a piece of the cake?

time… is there anywhere left to visit for you? We never did get to go to Brazil. Brazil and probably the Antarctic are the places I wanted to visit. I know that in Brazil, the response to the music is tremendous. I could probably play a gig to about 60,000 people out there, but I just haven’t had the chance to go. I cant wait to party in Brazil.

…more just in terms of everyone wanting to have a chat with you, they want you on their T.V shows, they want to play your records, they want to come and see you live. How does that feel to know that you do have such a fan base and such a popularity that people do want to know more about you and speak to you? Yea, I enjoy that. I enjoy the experience of it all. It’s nice to be in demand, as long as I’m good within myself, as long as I’m surrounded by good people that make the experience pleasurable. Through my life, if I look back, I know there will be people who would read this and appreciate what I’m saying. If you think about the toughest times, it was because you were working with people, or you were surrounded by people that just weren’t right for you. I need good people otherwise I cant exist.

Is that Brazil or South America as a whole that you haven’t been to as a continent? Yes. But I definitely remember having a call to do a big stadium show in Brazil, but I’ve never been able to fit that in. So yes, it’s Central America that I haven’t yet visited. If you think about Mexico and all those various places…

That touches upon one of the other questions, because you’re a solo artist, the sole focus is on yourself, it’s not as if you have band mates to share the load or a guitarist who will also do some interviews with someone in Japan etc… because you are the sole focus, people do like to gossip and generate rumours, how do you feel about that? How is that something that you cope with? Do you pay attention? I don’t really pay attention actually. I like to form my own opinion of myself. If I was searching for myself in others, I think I would be very lost, even more lost than I have ever been so I just shun away from it to be honest. I do my work, I keep my head down and try to avoid any speculation You have travelled far and wide with your career, is there anywhere that you’re hoping to visit for the first

When you are away, do you get homesick for Wales? Or for where you live now? I obviously long for the finer things I used to experience which is being on an empty beach, walking with only myself and my thoughts for miles around, but that being said, I never have any regrets. I don’t yearn, I don’t really look back; I’m constantly looking forward so I don’t give myself the opportunity to lick my wounds and want to be somewhere else. I decided that this is the place I have chosen to be and I accept it wholeheartedly. Are you glad that you’ve had this opportunity? I know I put myself in good stead when I stand in front of 60,000 people, I feel as though I have earned it. I’ve worked from 150 capacity venues all the way through to what you see today, so I definitely know what its like to be on stage, I’ve been on it thousands of times now, so I don’t feel as though it’s a place that is alien to me, infact, it feels quite peaceful and happy. Do you mind me asking, how does your family feel about your success? You’re one of the biggest selling British female artists of the decade… What do they feel? Are you still the daughter, are you still the sister, are you still the next door neighbour to them? Yea… I’m still the daughter, still the sister and still the friend, but they always knew that this was going to happen. I think my determination was something that couldn’t be measured. I don’t know why I wanted to belong in music. I don’t know what pushed me forward; I still to this day don’t know what I’m looking for, but they knew I was going to succeed, or die trying. I think they just had to wait in the wings and see how fate would take me. With the fame, are there up sides and down sides and can you give us some examples? The upsides have to be being a young woman and standing in a room of very important people and they listen to you. When you have any kind of success, you earn the right to have your say and I’ve wanted that for a very long time. It was very difficult at 19 to convince people I knew what was best for me, so now I’m getting closer to that. If I think about the down sides of fame, I

guess it’s the fact that nothing can be erased. The fact that whatever you do will stay around forever; from this interview to whatever you do in your private life. I’m very cautious of that. I’m fully aware that it could always be something that I regret; when I look back when I’m 60 because of the age of the internet. I’d have to look back at myself coming out of a nightclub really drunk and half naked. That’s why I’m very cautious of doing those things. I try to keep my private life to myself, so that I can keep my vices to myself…If I’m going to go out and be young and wild. I just cant afford to do it because it will jeapordise what I stand by. That’s what sets you apart from some of the people around who do that…. I am very much one of those sort of wild, young girls, I like to enjoy myself. When I get drunk I either laugh or cry. So I think back to the last few years how many moments I could have been seen with mascara on my face, pouring my heart out to friends about something over numerous bottles of wine and how lucky I have been that I made the right choices to do it in private. Obviously, now you’re in a loving, stable relationship, you’ve also got two dogs. Does having this kind of normality in your life really help? Is it something you enjoy? I think Stability is really important for anybody in life. The finer things that keep you grounded and make you feel safe wherever it might be and whatever it is you do and so for me I definitely feel as though I’ve got something to hold close to my heart that even when I’m thousands of miles away from the place I call home, I have something I feel connected to. Are you able to go out and walk your dogs unnoticed when you’re at home? I have to admit, I have a dog walker. I don’t know if I’d want to be seen in my vintage coat with a set of Wellington boots… I remember taking them to Wales, on the beach, that was amazing and nobody was around. I just love those kind of things, I think they are so healthy. I sometimes forget to live in the moment and take a look around me and appreciate what’s going on. So we have to be kind to ourselves and enjoy those moments when we’re not working or worrying or obsessing or being passionate, we just have to be. What are your plans in 2011 for the UK? Are there touring plans, are you starting to plan? Of course behind the scenes there is a lot of talking about what I would like to do in terms of my live performance and I’ve said I’d like to wait until at least February to announce any dates. To allow others to live with my record, to allow people to have it in the backgrounds of their lives so that we can all stick together Are you planning something spectacular? Of course I want to make it visually amazing, I sometimes feel that because I’m an organic artist as

they call me, that I sometimes get forgotten about for pulling tricks out of the bag. You look at a Kylie Minogue concert and its full of visuals and dancing and the same at a Take That concert as well. I want to push myself in those departments. Just because I’m organic and I can sing, I write the material and I’m considered a songwriter, doesn’t mean I don’t want to have a blast and explore my pop star elements also Yea… Why cant you be a showbiz woman…? I think pop star more than showbiz. Showbiz sounds a little bit too feather boa! You’ve had your first film role with ‘Patagonia’. You’ve been approached before about film roles but have wanted to focus on your music. Was it something you enjoyed doing, is it something you would like to do more? I can’t quite explain the response I seem to get from the film world and it came as quite a surprise to me, its something that I never quite expected. That being said, my decision to do ‘Patagonia’ was not because I wanted to explore my acting skills although equally they were valuable for me. I wanted to go back and make a welsh movie that would belong to the welsh public and that they would cherish. It was slow moving and beautifully shot and romantic and charming. I was drawn more to the context of the piece rather than my introduction. So if it was a story that did grab your interest, would that be something that was of interest to you going forward? I think it has to be something that I feel passionate about and something that I feel drawn towards and that I feel would stand the test of time And finally… Any great plans for Christmas? I have plans but whether I will see them through is another matter. I only know what I’m doing as far as the end of today in terms of the diary. I shall keep it open and hope that I can have lots of fun and raise a glass… Will you see your family or will you be in some far off country? I was very impressed with the attention to detail in the decoration, with the wooden foot bowl carefully laid out ready for me surrounded with a choice of two different body cleansers, one energising, the other calming allowing Julie,The Parlour beauty therapist, to help personalise the treatment specifically for me and my needs. After changing into a bathrobe I decided I needed some energy and chose the peppermint scented body cleanser, which Julie added to some dead sea salts along with blue oil to exfoliate and energise my tired

feet and calf muscles. During the foot spa Julie asks me certain questions regarding how I’m feeling, if I don’t like specific scents, allergies etc to work out exactly what I would benefit from most in my treatment. The facial started with me having to choose one scented oil out of a choice of three, Julie places each oil under your nose for a few seconds and you choose which you find the most pleasant, this scent is then used throughout your treatment. Exfoliation follows to gently stimulate your skin surface, revealing a smoother, clearer, more refined complexion beneath—and pores that are primed for maximum treatment benefits. After rebalancing my skin Julie massaged my face, neck and shoulders, relaxing me further down into the bed so my whole body felt rested. After carefully placing cotton pads over my eyes a Taumaline radiance face mask was applied to boost skin’s energy, while natural exfoliants help skin gently shed dull, lackluster surface cells—revealing new radiant skin. Whilst this was working its magic I was treated to a lovely foot massage, you have the option to choose between a Scalp massage, arm and hand massage or a foot massage. hen asked to help with the renovation of a large family home in South Lincolnshire I was delighted, although on first inspection of the house I was surprised by how big it was and how much work needed to be done. I didn’t find it daunting at all, having had a background in construction before progressing into Interior Design, and I knew my fabulous team of skilled trades would help me turn this project around with outstanding results. The project was proposed for 18 months, which not only included renovating the entire 4 bedroom house, but to totally reconfigure the internal layout, build a large two storey extension and also a separate swimming pool and gym complex within the three acre garden of the house… For Anne Louise Magazine I will invite you to follow the journey of one of my favourite areas of the house, the family kitchen. The original kitchen was small in comparison to the house but has a beautiful south facing aspect which let the light flood in. we gutted the room, only keeping the Aga to use in the new room. We knocked through where the window was and took the walls back as far as we could with the support of a huge steel joist, which brought the kitchen into the new extension.

Above the first part of the extension, which is now the dining area, is a new guest suite, and the family snug area beyond is single storey. Not pretty, but the AGA is still protected and in it’s original place while work carries on around it. Pipes are ready under the floor for water and waste… the hardest part of designing a large kitchen with little useable wall space was difficult, there are large French doors to all walls! (brilliant for light, bad for storage space!) The 3 metre Island is most definitely the working area of the kitchen, it houses an electric oven, 5 burner gas hob, dishwasher, 2 circular inset sinks with tri-flow tap and a boiling hot tap delivering instant water at 100 degrees, (no need for a kettle!) plus pan drawers and as much storage as I could fit. Everything is hand built to our bespoke design, even the table and benches and the sumptuous denim sofa. And the old Aga lives on to welcome another family into it’s warmth. Don’t miss next month where I tackle fitting in a utility, storage space and a guest toilet off the kitchen!

Roasted Turkey with Fig,

Apple and Shallot Stuffing with Fresh Sage 5kg free-range Totally Traditional Turkey 4 tbsp rapeseed oil Sea salt and black pepper Fig, Apple and Shallot Stuffing with Fresh Sage: 75g butter 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 8 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped 250g dried figs, chopped into small cubes 2 small eating apples 250g fresh breadcrumbs 3 tbsp fresh sage leaves, chopped 750g sausage meat 3tbsp of parsley, chopped 1 large egg beaten Sea salt and black pepper Preheat oven to 230째C/Gas Mark 8 1. Remove turkey giblets and reserve. Rinse the turkey inside and out and dry well. 2. Place the turkey in a large roasting pan, brush the turkey generously with rapeseed oil and season with sea salt and black pepper and cover with foil. 3. Place the prepared turkey in the pre-heated oven and cook at this temperature for the first 30 minutes. Then, lower the oven temperature to 180째C/Gas Mark 4 and cook for approximately 30 minutes per kilo, basting every hour. 4. To prepare the stuffing, heat the butter and rapeseed oil until the butter has melted. Add the shallot and fry gently until well softened but not browned. Stir in the garlic and season well with sea salt and black pepper. Remove from the heat and place in a bowl, leave to cool. 5. Peel the apples, cut into quarters, remove the core and cut into small cubes. Mix the figs, apples, breadcrumbs, sage, sausage meat and parsley with the shallots, season well with sea salt and black pepper using clean hands and then mix in the beaten egg. The mixture should be quite firm, with wet hands, mould the stuffing into balls the size of a golf ball. 6. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake in the pre-heated oven for about 20 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. Alternatively you can use the mixture to stuff an onion, per person, and place the rest of the mixture into an ovenproof dish to cook. 7. Take one small onion per person and peel, leaving the top of the onion intact and the base root in place. Peel and boil, whole, in salted boiling water for 8-10 minutes, until just soft, drain and cool in cold water. Drain and cut the top off the onion, about three quarters of the way up, so as to make a lid. Using a sharp knife, hollow out the onion and stuff with the stuffing mixture, replace the lid and brush all over with rape seed oil. Bake for 30-35 minutes in the oven along side the turkey until cooked through and slightly caramelised. When the turkey is approximately 35 minutes before the end of cooking, remove the foil, drain off any of the excess fat and cook for a further 35 minutes or until golden brown. 8. Transfer the turkey to a platter and cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 20-30 minutes. 9. Serve the turkey carved with stuffing balls or stuffed onions and warm homemade turkey gravy with sherry.
