Nina Osborne designed jewellery & accessories for many top High Street fashion brands, then after being made redundant decided to pursue a longtime ambition, setting up her own business.
Butterfly Stud Earrings £70
How did you get started in jewellery design?
The road to starting my own business has had a few twists and turns, but for a long time it’s been something I wanted to do.
Lovebird Earrings £90
I went to University at the age of 28, to study for a BA in Jewellery and Silversmithing after working in Marketing for a few years. When I left school my careers adviser persuaded me that a business rather than a creative career was the right way to go. But the creativity was always there and at 28 I moved back home, handed my notice in at my job and went to University. It was great, I really enjoyed my time there, where my ideas were taken seriously and my skills really developed. I graduated in 2003, ready to start my own business, but was very quickly offered a job as a Jewellery Designer for Wedgwood, after being spotted at the New Designers Exhibition, held every year in Islington, London. It was a really tempting offer and I decided the experience would be valuable when I did eventually start up on my own. I then moved on to another business, designing
Buttercup Ring £95
costume jewellery for a number of High Street clients and then, my next move was to a smaller, local company, designing giftware and packaging, but after only working there for 5 months the business closed down and I was made redundant. It was the first time in my life I’d been without a job, I even worked part time in a jewellery store all through University, and I found it quite hard to deal with, but eventually, after getting some part time work and a little freelance I decided that it was the time to start my own business. So in 2009 I started developing the collections and the website was launched in 2010. I’ve had a really positive response and it feels so great when people love my jewellery. I’m really excited about the future of the business and continuing to make things that people love.
What materials and processes do you use in your collections?
I mainly work in sterling silver and all of my pieces are also available in 18ct gold plate, but I do also take commissions in solid gold. I use
quite a number of processes in my collections, including forming and texturing the silver by hand, intricate soldering, as well as wax carving and glass kiln fired enamelling.
What kind of woman wears Nina Osborne jewellery? I think the woman that likes my jewellery is feminine, a little quirky and is an imaginative and romantic spirit.
Which other jewellery designers do you admire?
I really admire Grainne Morton who uses a lot of found objects in her work. She likes to make pieces which tell a story and evoke a feeling of nostalgia. I’m also a big fan of Diana Porter’s jewellery, who uses etched words in a lot of her pieces, with really beautiful messages.
What can we expect next from Nina Osborne?
I’m currently working on a collection called Summer Meadow. It’s a collection which uses enamels printed with lovely sketches of birds, butterflies and flowers. There’ll be chain tassels, fresh water pearls and semi precious stones mixed in. I’m planning to launch the collection in the Spring time.
What advice would you give to graduate jewellery designers?
I think it’s a difficult time when you first graduate. I found I had lots of different priorities, I wanted to be a Jewellery Designer Maker, but also wanted my own
place to live and it takes time to build a business. I think my advice would be to really focus on what it is you want to achieve and plan how you’re going to do it. It might mean getting some part time work, preferably in the Jewellery Industry where you’ll gain lots of valuable knowledge, to help you with your longer term plan.
What do you get up to when you’re not thinking about or designing jewellery?
My best friend and I love to bake. Instead of going to the pub we’ll go round to each other’s houses and bake tasty things (although we do sometimes go to the pub too). We’ve found this great series of books called ‘Indulgence’. There’s Indulgence Cupcakes, Cookies and Petits Fours, but the best one by far is ‘Indulgence’ Slices. Great recipes, and beautiful photography, so they make gorgeous gifts too.
Blossom & Buttercup Bracelet £200
As well as that, it’s lots of country walks with my husband and beloved Airedale terrier. But I need those after eating all of the slices!

Makeup Blog
Makeup expert, Lisa Precious, shares her tips on how to achieve the perfect smoky eye...... www.lisaprecious.co.uk
When applying dark shadows You will first need to prep the eye area, I like to use a bit
1 of foundation over the eye, apply with the fingertips and
blend. If you are particularly dark around the eyes then you will need a smooth creamy concealer, this will lift out darkness and create an anti ageing lifting effect with a canvas for you to work on. My tip is to apply concealer right up to the brow to create an eye lift effect . pat your eyes with powder and curl the lashes with 2 Next eyelash curlers . a neutral coloured eyeshadow as a base, brush 3 Using this over the lid and up to the brow. Using the lightest shade in the palette, take a soft brush
4 and lightly press the powder into the inner corner of the eye and over the lid.
Using the darkest shade, take a small soft flat brush,
the contour of your eye around the outer edge 5 following of the lid and into the socket line and along the lower lash
line .To achieve a really smoky effect you will need to pat the colour on instead of brushing. Finally blend using your soft brush. Take a black kohl pencil and run this along the inner and
6 upper rim of the eye. 7
To really make your eyes POP, use any colour of liquid eye liner, using a fine liner brush follow the contour of the lid next to the lashes. The line should be slightly thicker as you get to the outer corner.
mascara coating the top of the lashes sweeping up 8 Apply and finally add a pair of dramatic false lashes. .
14 | anne louise jan/feb 2011
apply your foundation after so that you don’t have to deal with shadow fall out spoiling your make-up. If you find lots of shadow falls during
application then just take a cotton
bud dipped in eye make-up remover and sweep away.
Why not experiment and try sweeping purple or turquoise shadow over the lids or use a bright blue, green or purple liquid liner instead of black ?
Keep blusher to a minimum, bronzer works well with smoky eyes and keep lips super peachy glossy and nude.

ndoubtedly the biggest new band to smash into the charts in the last 12 months with debut single All Time Low hitting the number one spot last summer, followed quickly by a number two hit with the ballad Heart Vacancy. They have built up a huge fanbase, with over 15 million plays of their videos on YouTube, and over 450,000 fans on Facebook. With their eagerly anticipated self-titled debut album storming into the top five, the boys have most definitely cemented themselves as a powerful force in UK pop.
How has 2010 been for you and the band, anything that has made you stand back and say ‘Wow, can’t believe I’ve just done that!
There have been more than one! Getting a number 1 and 2 in our first year obviously, Gigs at wembley, the O2, meeting Cheryl and Danni are up there, but nothing will beat watching a sweaty Paul Danan polishing his bowling ball furiously.
Lots of members of bands often start their own separate music career whilst staying in a 20 | anne louise jan/feb 2011
band, is this something that has crossed your mind for the future? No, not like a no that could never happen, just a no I’ve never thought about that. Saying that I think Siva would cry if I got him a colab with The Script and The Corrs.
Has there ever been a moment when you have wanted the ground to open up whilst you have been performing live or a guest on a TV show? Ha ha ha, loads of times. On X factor I slipped off my
t!
dodgem and nearly decorated the floor with my own teeth. Gutting for me, hilarious for the lads and all my mates back home.
Do you ever get star struck?
Yeah! We sung at a beautiful church over Christmas right, and suddenly Bill Nighy rocks up and does this hilarious bible parody thing. If me and Max and Siva had known we would’ve gone with our Shaun of The Dead and Underworld T-shirts on.
Who would you like to sing a duet with?
Me? Cat Stevens. The band? Beyonce or Rhianna, or both. Any insanely rich, insanely good looking, global super star will do us fine really.
What would be your idea of a brilliant Friday night?
Erm, take away and beers, then pub for a bit, then meet some people in town and party. Standard.
Best movie of all time is..... James Cameron’s Avatar.
On my iPod at the minute is.....
The Jude! Best live indie act I’ve seen in AGES!
What do you find attractive in a woman?
Being sexy, and funny. And being able to dance is a huge thumbs up for me.
Biggest turn-off in a woman? Being a bitch.
Do you have a tried and tested chat up line?
Ha ha ha, seriously no one uses them do they? Isn’t it for sitcoms? Saying that, Tom throws out a howler every now and again...
Are you a romantic guy at heart?
Playstation or Xbox or (Wii!)?
Xbox!! We tried that Kinect system where you don’t need any controls and it’s hilarious. We learned that Siva has little to no hand-eye coordination.
Most people don’t know I....
Am half Jamaican. Thats not true, but looking at my amazing tan people sometimes assume I’m mixed. That’s also not true. Errrrm, I only learned to swim breast stroke last year. (It was on top of a hotel in Singapore in an infinity pool so I’m not complaining)
The one thing I would like to do most in the world is... Appear as a band on Come Dine with Me, or even better, Total Wipeout.

Have you got a secret celebrity crush? Nope, as soon as management even get a whiff of a celebrity crush they try to ell everyone, there’s no secrets! So lets say that June Brown is a total fox, and see how our PR roll with that one.
My favorite meal is....
Microwaved cheese sandwich. Don’t judge, just try it. Gooey dairy goodness.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love chilling with my lizard out. Her names Neytiri (or Tia for short) and she’s the female member of The Wanted. But sometime’s I do go and meet my human friends too.

Nikki Austin, interior designer and owner of Austin John Interiors, shares the ups and downs of renovating a large family home.......
H
aving to make the most of available space can be tricky, even in a large house there are still issues with storage, after all, the bigger the family, the more coats, shoes and laundry there will be! We converted this single storey, single brick outhouse at the back of the old garage into a usable utility space, we were asked for storage for lots of coats and shoes, a spacious WC which visitors would be using as well as the family, and we needed a utility room with as many cupboards as we could fit in. The budget was tight, so with a little scavenging and clever thinking, we set to work‌ Creating essential storage space within the utility area by removing a dividing wall. We then insulated the external walls, replaced the roof and installed insulation and electric under floor heating throughout. This area of the house was so cold, so when the new heating system for the house was planned, we installed towel warmers in the utility and WC, plus a small radiator in the new lobby and a pipe to keep the closet aired. Building to plan the closet and a cupboard for the consumer units, to the right is the entrance to the utility area and the far left, the WC. The little WC has to be the best example of a makeover on a budget, the Tongue and Grooves are long, solid panels of MDF made to look like old boards- these were essential to conceal ugly pipes. The natural limestone tiled floor runs throughout the ground floor kitchen area too. The fittings in the downstairs loo are all salvaged from the original bathroom, and the cast iron roll top bath is in the Master suite! We replaced the old tarnished taps for some bright new chrome ones. Cupboard doors are painted in eggshell to flow with the skirtings and woodwork throughout the house. I have painted these to break up a run of 5 doors. All internal doors in the house are solid oak. In the utility room we recycled some of the old granite that was in the original kitchen, made a template, had it professionally cut and polished- teamed with some painted units you’d never know it was saved from the skip!

Tesco’s Derma Intensive + Range £7.99 each
For the ‘Derma’ range I have been using the eye cream, serum, night cream and day cream with SPF15. The eye cream 30ml tube has softened the skin nicely around my eyes, however the biggest selling point for this cream is the extra large size tube (most eye creams are 15ml). The extra strengh serum works well with both the day and night creams and only a small amount is required. When applying the day cream I noticed that it is best to wait five minutes to allow the skin to absorb the cream before applying make up, this prevents make up prematurely rubbing off. I have been using the creams for a couple of weeks and even though there is no drastic change in my skin it does feel and look younger and with continued use I hope to see further improvement. All in all a great range that is in-line with the more expensive creams, very good value for money.
Tesco’s my skin Range £1.99 each
in the ‘my skin’ range, which is mainly for teenage skin i tried the make remover products, eye wipes, larger face wipes and make up remover lotion, i also tried the face scrub. I was happy with the effectiveness of all these products and found them suitable for my older and sensitive skin. A cheap and cheerful range suitable for any age group and won’t dry out the skin or cause irritation. Pretty no nonsense packaging and a light refreshing fragrance.

Serve in style!
Cake stand, Maxwell & Williams £25
1. Preheat oven to 200°c/400°f/Gas 6. 2. Place the washed Damsons into an ovenproof dish and sprinkle with the sugar, leave to one side. 3. Place the flour, ground almonds, salt and baking powder in a bowl or food processor and mix together, then pulse or rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the buttermilk and almond essence and mix until it turns to a thick dough. Drop tablespoons of the mixture over the fruit, around the edge and middle, about 8 tablespoons in all, sprinkle with the almonds and brown sugar. 4. Bake for 25-30 minutes on the top shelf of the oven or until the crust is golden brown, if the nuts look like they are burning over loosely with foil. 5. Serve warm with ice cream or cream.
Pecan and Squash Cup Cakes with Cinnamon Frosting (Makes 12 cupcakes) 2eggs 175ml semi-skimmed milk 150g cooked, pureed squash 75ml vegetable oil 1 tsp vanilla extract 275g self raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 100g castor sugar 75g raisins 75g chopped pecan nuts ½ tsp mixed spice 1 tsp cinnamon Pinch grated nutmeg For the topping 150g cream cheese 150g sour cream 5tbsp sifted icing sugar ½ tsp finely grated orange zest 2 tsp lemon juice 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla extract 12 whole pecan nuts for decoration (optional)
1. Pre-oven to 180°c/Gas Mark 4/ 400°F 2. Line the muffin tin with paper muffin cups. Beat the eggs in a medium sized bowl, add the milk, squash puree, oil and vanilla and mix thoroughly until smooth. In a separate large bowl mix together all of the remaining dried ingredients then add the squash mixture to the large bowl of dry ingredients and fold together gently until the mixture is just combined. Do not overmix, the batter will be slightly lumpy and not that smooth. Spoon batter mixture into muffin cups and fill three-quarters full, bake for 12- 15 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean at the centre of the muffin. Leave the muffins until cool before frosting. 3. Place the frosting ingredients in a small bowl and mix until smooth. Adjust cinnamon and sugar to taste, top generously onto the muffins. Decorate with a whole pecan nut.

Venus and Pluto act like a depth charge at the core of any underlying emotional stress, blowing problems out of the water in order that you deal with them. Jupiter back in your sign gives you more of a steer on your life and this planet also beings a fair share of luck your way.
Perhaps the time has come for you to work out how you can break repeat behaviours that continue to keep you on the spot. Fun can be found in the form of the unusual, and the sun will help you to begin to realise that an idea you had written off could actually be a real winner.
Even though you are a sign that embraces change, recent events may have affected you more deeply than you first thought, so give yourself some TLC. The sun in your sister sign of Aquarius lightens the mood immeasurably, and you should eventually be at your creative zenith

24 Aug - 23 Sept
Those closest to you may slightly unnerve you by being a little lukewarm. Have you perhaps done something to upset them? Your main focus this month, however, will be on your longterm goals, and this will be helped by the energy of structure planet, Saturn. Mars gives you a laser-like perception.
The cosmos signals a step change in both your career and what you prioritise, and also as regards your health. A positive and healthier outlook is a good start as any, as with the sun in your opposite sign you may feel a little below par, and in need of a bit more attention and nurturing.
Notions of self-worth loom large this month. Are you going to step up to the plate and push your own agenda, or are you happier working away in the background? The sun will certainly help you make a big impact, and colleagues may begin to view you in an entirely different light. Once it moves into Pisces, love and partnerships move on to a more equitable footing
Libra 24 Sept - 23 Oct
Scorpio 24 Oct - 23 Nov
Sagittarius 23 Nov - 22 Dec
Don’t be surprised if you get the property bug. From getting the ball rolling over a house move to staying put and simply freshening up the décor, whatever you decide on should be a tonic. The sun, Neptune and Mars are in unison at the moment and for you this means heightened creativity.
A busy month as you very privately and quietly begin to chew over the next stage of something in your life plan. However sure you are of your ideas and strategies, keeping them under wraps is perhaps your best move, for the moment. Venus and Pluto put the accent on friends and family.
Venus and Pluto in your money zone appeal to your natural cavalier attitude to spending and the pull of retail therapy may be strong. I would ask you to try and curtail this and instead try to work out what void you are trying to fill. The sun makes for an extremely fast paced time and you can expect a lot of new challenges to spring up in the least likely of places.
Capricorn 23 Dec - 20 Jan
Aquarius
Pisces 20 Feb - 20 Mar
With Venus in your sign for most of the month, this is a time to try and work out what it is that you want in love. You can expect some sort of emotional transformation as part of this process. The sun, Mars and Neptune fill your head with all kinds of ideas around ways to improve finances and you shouldn’t dismiss any of them outright. The Piscean sun on the 19th makes you more chatty and sociable than you have been in a while.
Although others may attempt to outmanoeuvre you in a bid to make you look inwardly at some kind of emotional upset, you will probably only do so when you are good and ready. Please understand the needs of others, and their concern for you, if this is the case. Mercury, Mars, the sun and Neptune in your sign make you quite the trailblazer.

Venus may flood your life with two very distinct types of people: fellow dreamers and those who demand - or at least attempt to - action from you. Whichever type you gravitate towards, you should arrive at an ambitious place mid-month where ideas can grow legs. The sun in your sign imbues you with a tremendous sense of purpose and clarity of thought.

Meet Stacey Jackson,
Glamorous Rockermum!
Stacey Jackson, a mother of four rocked the charts with her debut album ‘Upside Down’ and now she’s back with her latest release ‘I am a woman’. Tell us about the inspiration for ‘I Am A Woman’ I had a surprise success with the dance versions of my two previous singles from my Motown meets hard rock album “Upside Down”. I Hear a Symphony which got to number 9 on the Music Week club charts and Band of Gold which peaked at 17, I started to get calls from various DJs and producers telling me my vocal is perfect for the poppy-dance genre and would I be interested in writing top lines and arranging tracks with them. So, I Am a Woman was conceived with two awesome producers who also write for Girls Aloud and Gabrielle Cilmi to name a few. It was written as an “empowering woman’s” track! What was it like filming the video? It was such fun! Especially being able to use the concept of juxtaposing the chaotic life of a housewife with the glamorous life of a pop singer - which parallels my real life. How do you juggle being a pop star and a mum? Very little sleep!! Just this past week I had a live show up in Chester during a massive snow storm and I was on after midnight, drove back to London that same night with tour manager and dancers in tow, got home at 4am, had my daughter’s nativity play that morning and hosted the PTA Christmas party in my home that night. I’m lucky because I have a super-supportive husband and my kids are also quite vocal about what I do. Like if they think something I’m wearing say in my video or a photoshoot is too risque, trust me I’d hear about it and I’d have to change my outfit! What’s been the highlight of your PA tour this year? My first London PA at Movida because my friends finally got to see what I’m up to. But I do love being able to go to various towns across the country to perform and meet my fans (even in the snow!) What are your plans for the next single? It’s already in the bag, I wrote it about a personal experience that changed my life. At the moment it’s
called ‘Live It Up’ but that may change because I’m collaborating with a hot UK rapper on it (keeping it a surprise for the moment!) and he’ll be writing his own rap on it so you never know what may happen to the track once he gets his hands on it! Do you have any advice for aspiring singers? It’s never too late to live your dream but if you want something bad enough you have to be prepared to work really hard at it and keep persevering. Also, with the internet being such a powerful tool there are so many avenues nowadays to showcase their talent. What are your top 5 beauty tips? Exercise at least five times a week. A good professional blow dry goes really far. Gel manicures last over a month, so it’s cost effective and your nails always look great! Drink lots of water High spf sunscreen in the sun, you’ll still get a nice glow but you won’t burn and wrinkle! What’s your favourite fashion designer? For high end it’s probably Dolce and Gabanna, for high street I’d say Lipsy. In fact I’m wearing a Lipsy dress on the cover of my single. What’s your new year’s resolution? To be able to have more one-on-one time with each of my children and my husband. staceyjackson.com
