FITNESS

PersonalTrainer Get Motivated = Get in Shape

W

ith the nights drawing in it can be tempting to get cosy at home after work and forget about your fitness regime but if you are in need of some post-summer fitness, fat loss and body toning, and need to kick start your life into shape then get your trainers at the ready and find a workout to motivate you….. Firstly you need to get your mind-set into “positive mode” and make this month the start of the new fitter and healthier you.

Step One – make it personal There are so many benefits when it comes to exercising, the first is to give you a better quality of life by being more active, improving your cardiovascular health and of course to help lose weight and tone up. Try and make a list of all the personal reasons you to want to get fit, and in turn, this can be more motivating than any other factor, you could chose some of the following:• • • • •

Getting out of the house and meeting new friends Being able to play with the children without feeling out of breath Improving your mood and beating depression Improving your self confidence Being able to go shopping and finding something you feel good in Also finding a friend or a “workout buddy” can help you to stick to your goals as you can encourage each other and are less likely to let the other down.

Step Two – What’s your Rhythm? Exercise shouldn’t be a routine that you force yourself to complete, if it is you need to change your workouts. Try activities that you enjoy and look forward to, variety is the spice of life and exercise, so try and switch from your normal gym workout to a group exercise class or even get wrapped up and go for a power walk or jog. You can exercise at any time of the day and although you won’t burn any more calories if you workout in the morning than in the evening you may find a morning workout suits your rhythms better…..leading to a more successful workout.

12 | november 2009

When you find your “rhythm” you can find the best way for your body to workout, to it’s full potential. In fitness when we talk about rhythm in this way it generally means your “circadian rhythms”, which is like your internal clock which represents your physiological and psychological changes that naturally occur in your body as part of a 24 hour cycle. So you may be an early bird or a night owl but this could be down to your circadian rhythms. Which workout is best for you….. If your natural rhythm means that you are up and ready to go in the morning you could try working out at this time as your body temperature is still cool which means you can exercise for longer without feeling exhausted and overheated, try and go for a morning power-walk or jog or try and go for an early morning swim (but still remember your warm up, cool down and stretch to avoid injury). Not only will you feel brighter and fresher for the rest of the day but your body will go on burning calories throughout the day. If you feel ready for action when the sun goes down then exercising in the evening has great benefits too as your body temperature is naturally warmer making it a perfect time for focusing on strength and conditioning work. Research has suggested that working out in the afternoons/early evening can result in better performance as you have more power, quicker reaction times along with lower heart resting heart rate and lower blood pressure.

Step Three – ENJOY!!! Exercise should be fun, safe, effective and part of your everyday life, the more you do the better you will look and feel and the more energy you will have. Encourage your family and friends to stay active with you and embrace each day as a new challenge and way to improve your fitness levels and quality of life.

Q&A

Q : How can I lose my “pear shape”? A : Unfortunately you can’t “spot reduce” an

area of the body to lose fat. You can target muscles, but as muscles lie under fat, if you want to improve your body shape and tone you need to work on reducing the fat first. You should try and aim on getting your body fat to a healthy level (between 21 – 34%) Look at your current level of fitness and try and incorporate some moderate activity every day such as 30-60 minutes of brisk walking and try and focus on your posture and technique as your walk. Assess your diet, try and ensure you are following a healthy eating plan and getting your full quota of fruit and vegetables, along with lean protein and carbohydrates. Try and keep sugary, fatty snacks to a minimum and ensure you stay well hydrated by drinking two litres of water each day. Try and focus your workouts on balancing the body, so include exercises that work your shoulders, arms, back and chest muscles. Go to Pilates classes as this will add shape and definition to your muscles giving them a long and lean look.

NEW to try this MONTH :Hula-Hooping

If you are looking for a fast calorie burner, try and some hula-hooping and burn more than 100 calories in 10 minutes while training your tummy, bottom and waist.

Pilates

Banish back ache, improve your posture and flatten your stomach with this slow, controlled and relaxing workout.

Dance classes

Ditch the workout and join the party and find yourself a dance class to give your workout a new lease of life.

HairTrends for Autumn/Winter

T

hose long summer nights have finally drawn to a close. Holiday romances, long walks on the beach and watching the sunset now seem like a fond memory until next year. As the leaves are falling from the trees and those beautifully sultry colours of autumn seem to be taking over everywhere you look, don’t let the winter blues set in just yet. Take inspiration from it, for now is the time to keep sake your summer memoires and thinking about layering, wrapping up warm and cosy nights cuddling up on the sofa. It’s a brand new season, which calls for a brand new you. From Paris and Milan, to London and New York City, the catwalks have been jam packed full of beautiful looks to keep the romance alive for Autumn/Winter 2009. Tony Corston from Gerard Hairdressing gives us the low down to find your perfect match this season.

Paris

Wuthering heights

Wear it high this season, the up do is still a fabulous look on the Milan fashion scene, but this time the classic beehive has a wistful romantic twist. With softer lines and gently curls to compliment this look, the seemingly effortless chic beehive is one of the most glam Autumn Winter hair styles around. As showcased by Louis Vitton, Jean Paul Gautier and Issey Miyake, it’s all about holding your head high. Just be warned that this look requires a lot of work. Tongs, pins and combs at the ready, the updo of the season will certainly need the right product to keep it in check. Reach for Clynol fix uphold strong spray (£7.15 500ml) from their gorgeous Style range. Not only will does it give fantastic hold, you’ll smell irresistible too!

Accessorize me up

There have been some absolutely gorgeous hair accessories hitting the runways in Paris for the new season. All of which will keep your locks looking gorgeous even in the most testing of weather. The corsage and fascinator is still a big hit judging from the Louis Viton and Lanvin shows, who are urging you to accentuate your lustful feminine side. While Yves Saint Lauren was sporting a stronger, darker tone, accessorising the updo with a leather hair wrap.

Tradition with a twist

milan

Wrap it up this season with the return of the most classic updo of them all, the bun. With a focus on evening hair on the catwalk for, you will be transported back to the days of the traditional bun and neat hair knots. The key is to keep the hair tight with a glossy shine. A far cry from the messy styles of previous seasons not a hair was out of place at the Jill Sander and Roberto Cavalli shows, where sleek partings wound into low tight buns filled the catwalk. Get a long lasting glossy finish to your style with Lustrous final shine spray (£9.20 100ml) from Clynol’s Look at Me range, you’ll have men falling at your feet.

Creating waves

Let 1940s glamour go to your head this season with cascading waves and curls that will unleash your lusty feminine side. Showcased on several runways in Milan the beautiful waves were turning heads and will have prospective suitors falling at your feet. Alessandro Dell’Acqua opted for tumbling classic waves given a hard edge with low side partings gelled into place. While the Emporio Armani and Moschino Cheap and Chic shows were filled with bouncy, sexy and healthy curls that will lift your mood and your style in minutes. But remember, to keep your locks luscious always use protection when styling. After washing spritz your hair with move massive volume spray (£8.25 250ml) from Clynol’s Style range before blow drying to add extra shine and va va voom.

new york It’s all in the texture

If you feel that the smooth and sleek waves of Milan, the heights of Paris and the country girl look of London is not quite your scene then the texturised lustful locks of New York could be the one for you. Loose ponytails were given a dry, dusty texture with luscious waves at Proenza Schouler, while over at Diesel hair was backcombed and piled up on top of the head with loose unstructured shape. Erin Fetherston opted for the 80s new romantic art of crimping and Alexander Wang went for tumbling waves gathered at the back for a full bodied effect. Effortless chic is still a strong look for this season. Get the look and reach for move shape gel wax (£8.25 100ml) from Clynol’s Style range. Simply spray onto your style and then mould with your fingers until you have your desired look.

Style it up

The New York girls really know how to style up their updo. Close of the heels of the twists and buns of Milan, the Manhattan shows were filled with embellishment. Caroline Herrera and Donna Karan catwalks saw buns accessorize with grips a plenty and flowers galore. Zac Posen took the wistful, wispy French twist to a new level by teaming it up with a studded weave hair band.

For your new look this season why not visit the experts at Gerard Hairdressing for a brand new your stepping into the new season. MEN

SUITS YOU sir! Office wear is definitely not just for the office this season, so swap your vest top for a waistcoat, your trainers for leather shoes and your work is done!

I

t’s all about sophistication this year and smart is definitely taking over from casual but it doesn’t have to cost the earth so Matalan have brought us the Grey Suit £40 and the Leather Shoe £20 so you really can do style on a shoestring.

The essence of style is being able to put together a great ensemble piece… fortunately House of Fraser have done all the work for us with the New And Lingwood range. Waistcoat, shirt, tie and trousers are all taken care of, however if you fancy putting the outfit together yourself why not start with the Religion Front Panel Shirt £49 from standout.net and work from there. If blue is your colour then the Charles Tyrwhitt Suit from Charles Tyrwhitt should be perfect. But if all this is getting

a little formal try the Gabicci Vintage Cardigan £59 from standout.net for those dress down days. So now you’ve got the outfit, but don’t forget to accessorize. Functional and fashionable, the Vivienne Westwood Satchel £295.00 from House of Fraser is a must and the Engraved Square Diamond Design Cufflinks £19.95 from GettingPersonal.co.uk will finish off an outfit with style. So be smart and take your work home with you!

TRAVEL

Hello World! Leanne Simons has been travelling the world with her boyfriend Simon since June. Before this the couple lived in Grantham. So far they have explored six countries in Africa, three states of America, and spent a week taking a holiday from their holiday on a paradise beach in Fiji. They are currently in New Zealand.

lands

f Is e Bay o Me at th

W

hen planning our trip we thought we would be having an endless summer and figured spring in New Zealand must surely be warm. Let me tell you something the guidebooks don’t - New Zealand is one of the wettest countries on earth. Thankfully it is also one of the most stunning. The Bay of Islands in the top of the north island is made up of 144 islands in waters as clear as bathwater and is spectacular. We spent eight days staying in a hostel in Paihia. We are getting used to hostels (they beat the tents in Africa) but it’s still a bit odd sleeping in bunk beds when you are (well) over the age of 12. Travelling takes you out of your comfort zone and is the ideal opportunity to try new things which is how we came to jump out of a plane. Skydiving is the most terrifying thing I have ever done but also the most thrilling. The feeling just before jumping is pure fear - fear of the unknown, fear of the

parachute not opening…. After 45 secs of frantic freefalling we floated gracefully and peacefully to the ground where I was ready to go again. We also went dolphin watching and saw 40 bottlenose dolphins doing acrobatic moves faster than our cameras could capture. Taking to the water again we tried our hand at fishing. Fortunately the crew baited our hooks and got the fish off so we didn’t need to get our hands dirty. We left the boat with a bag full of fillets. The freshest and tastiest fish ever. After the Bay of Islands we picked up a campervan for a two week tour of the rest of the central north island. It’s one thing spending 24 hours a day with your boyfriend when you have a hostel to lose yourself in but cooped up in a converted people carrier tempers get frayed a lot quicker. When we weren’t bickering we explored Cathedral Cove in the Coromandel Peninsula where scenes from Prince Caspian were filmed. I watched as Simon battled the tide to dig his own jacuzzi on hot water beach in Hahei. We held our noses to block out the sulphur stench in Rotorua and floated through a cave lit up by thousands of glow worms in Waitomo. I’ll let you know next month what delights the south island holds.

Tough, Agile and Stylish Qashqia unleashes your playful side

Q

ashqai (say it ‘Cash Kai’) blends the agility and comfort of a hatchback with the strength and practicality of an SUV, and all in a sporty, fashionable wrapping. Borrowing its name from a desert-dwelling nomadic tribe living near the Zagros mountains in South Western Iran, Qashqai is described by Stephane Schwarz, Design Director at Nissan Design Europe as an ‘Urban Nomad’. “It’s tough and compact for the city but sleek and agile for journeys away from the town,” he says. How was that achieved? By fusing a light, elegant and sporty upper body to a tough, planted lower body. The top half of Qashqai is reminiscent of a dynamic passenger car, with a sleek, dynamic form that features a distinctive shoulder line which rises at the rear – a design cue similar to that of the Murano.

a relaxing, airy space for the occupants. High seating positions provide the sense of security normally found in an SUV, yet Qashqai is a more dynamic performer with the accelerative and handling capabilities of a hatchback.

The dynamic exterior is matched by an asymmetric interior, providing a focused cockpit environment complete with deeply recessed instruments for the driver and

One of the other benefits of the higher roofline is that occupants sit comparatively upright which translates into more interior leg, shoulder and head room.

Convenient storage The carefully conceived interior is also crammed with intelligent storage solutions for maximum functionality and flexibility. The huge cooled glovebox* has 14 litres of storage space – large enough to hold a remarkable 15 cans of drink… beating the previous 13 can record set by Note – as well as an integrated sunglasses holder, while the front door pockets can each take a 0.5 litre bottle and an A4 map book. Mesh pockets on the backs of the front seats are large enough to hold A3 sized map books (Acenta, n-tec and Tekna). The centre console storage box has a 3.5 litre volume and can hold up to eight CDs in their jewel cases, and there’s also a 4.0 litre sliding storage drawer under the front passenger seat on Acenta (not with Graphite trim), n-tec and Tekna models. The cabin will also impress for its satisfyingly high standard of finish. Stand-outs include the high quality surfaces of the dashboard and the high-precision finish of the aluminium that highlights the wheel, instrument pack, air-vents and centre

console. Similarly, the panelling and stitching of the seats make them a more dramatic feature of the interior, besides underlining the car’s dynamic character with their sporty bolstering. *not available on Visia grade

Quiet and comfortable As well as cooling the cabin more quickly than conventional air conditioning, it does it more quietly and more comfortably. Instead of having to turn the ventilation fan to a high setting – and having cold air blown directly at your face as a result – the mild flow vent gets on with the job of lowering the temperature as efficiently, as quietly and as gently as possible. It’s the sort of thoughtful feature that you’ll be lucky to find in a car costing a great deal more money. On the road prices start from £14,200 For more information visit www.nissan.co.uk

hen Lady GaGa was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper hits, and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The precocious child would dance around the table at fancy Upper West Side restaurants using the breadsticks as a baton. And she would innocently greet a new babysitter in nothing but her birthday suit. It’s no wonder that the little girl from a good

Italian New York family turned into the exhibitionist, multi-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for theatrics that she is today: Lady GaGa. “I was always an entertainer. I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today,” says Lady GaGa, 22, who made a name for herself on the Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song “Beautiful Dirty Rich,” and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek “shock art” performances where GaGa – who designs and makes many of her stage outfits – would strip down

to her hand-crafted hot pants and bikini top, light cans of hairspray on fire, and strike a pose as a disco ball lowered from the ceiling to the orchestral sounds of A Clockwork Orange. “I always loved rock and pop and theatre. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realised I could do all three,” says GaGa, who nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga” and who cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.” That goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: GaGa is the girl who at age 4 learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s the Bitter End by night and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School (the Manhattan private school Nicky and Paris Hilton attended) classmates by day. At age 17, she became was one of 20 kids in the world to get

early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Signed by her 20th birthday and writing songs for other artists (such as the Pussycat Dolls, and has been asked to write for a series of Interscope artists) before her debut album was even released, Lady GaGa has earned the right to reach for the sky. “My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says GaGa, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on her album, The Fame (Streamline/ Interscope/KonLive). “I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine.” On The Fame, it’s as if GaGa took two parts dancepop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock, with a splash of disco and burlesque, and generously poured it into the

figurative martini glasses of the world in an effort to get everyone drunk with her Fame. “The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced

it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a shareable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.” The CD’s opener and first single, “Just Dance,” gets the dance floor rocking with it’s “fun, L.A., celebratory vibe.” As for the equally catchy, “Boys Boys Boys,” GaGa doesn’t mind wearing her influences on her sleeve. “I wanted to write the female version of Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls,’ but with my own twist. I wanted to write a pop song that rockers would like.” “Beautiful Dirty Rich” sums up her time of self-discovery, living in the Lower East Side and dabbling in drugs and the party scene. “That time, and that song, was just me trying to figure things out,” says GaGa. “Once I grabbed the reigns of my artistry, I fell in love with that more than I did with the party life.” On first listen, “Paparazzi” might come off as a love song to cameras, and in all honestly, GaGa jokes “on one level it IS about wooing the paparazzi and wanting fame. But, it’s not to be taken completely seriously. It’s about everyone’s obsession with that idea. But, it’s also about wanting a guy to love you and the struggle of whether you can have success or love or both.”

cable TV sitcom. “I did this the way you are supposed to. I played every club in New York City and I bombed in every club and then killed it in every club and I found myself as an artist. I learned how to survive as an artist, get real, and how to fail and then figure out who I was as singer and performer. And, I worked hard.” GaGa adds with a wink in her eye, “And, now, I’m just trying to change the world one sequin at a time.”

GaGa shows her passion for love songs on such softer tracks as the Queeninfluenced “Brown Eyes” and the sweet kiss-off break-up song “Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say).” “‘Brown Eyes’ is the most vulnerable song on the album,” she explains. “‘Eh Eh’ is my simple pop song about finding someone new and breaking up with the old boyfriend.” It’s been a while since a new pop artist has made her way in the music industry the old-fashioned/grass roots way by paying her dues with seedy club gigs and selfpromotion. This is one rising pop star who hasn’t been plucked from a model casting call, born into a famous family, won a reality TV singing contest, or emerged from a teen www.lushlifemagazine.co.uk

Lady Gaga released her fourth single, LoveGame, on 21 September 2009, backed with a host of remixes, including the Chew Fu Ghettohouse Fix featuring Marilyn Manson. www.ladygaga.co.uk november 2009 | 45

he Joanna Jones Gallery in Bottesford celebrated a successful first year with a well attended private view of autumn/winter work. As well as new work from regular artists across the country Joanna was delighted to exhibit new work by two local artists; Maggie Campbell who paints thought provoking images in oils on paper and sculptor Andrew Smith who’s tactile figures also show the natural qualities of the different stone he works with. Joanna’s aim of bringing affordable original art to the area has been successful with many customers returning and many more still discovering the gallery. “I’ve been amazed at the response we’ve had in the 46 | november 2009

first year and am always delighted to see both new visitors to the gallery and familiar faces return. I still get a buzz out of seeing the variety of emotional responses that different art provokes and the pleasure people get when they purchase a truly one-off item, whether something small and intimate or a larger statement piece.” The guests although eager to see new work by their favorite artists were curious about the new exhibitors and agreed they were a fantastic addition to the art already on offer. Andrew Smith’s classical pieces work well with the more familiar abstract sculpture of Rob Fogell who’s recent forms in both dark and light alabaster have a translucent

quality not possible with his more familiar work. As well as the stone sculpture there are the modern bronzes of Philip Hearsey and aluminium statement pieces by Lesley Carruthers. Maggie’s recent work draws heavily on the concept of the “psyche” and charts the relationship between inner and outer realities with the use of symbolic characters. The luminous paintings sit well alongside the vibrant impressionist landscapes and figures of Mary-Jane Alexander’s oils, the striking horizons of John Connolly, vivid paintings of Jonathan Trim, illustrative mixed media of Lora Redman (another local artist) and abstract paintings of Slovakian artist Martin Horecny. The gallery also has a variety of original ceramic, glass and jewellery on offer, and www.lushlifemagazine.co.uk

You start this month on a high as there’s a sense of optimism in the air for you, but that’s because you are very firm in your stance at home. You will discover that things connected to your past now illuminate your new way of life. Saturn helps you regroup and rebuild and for some of you this may actually mean changing the interior of your home, or preparing to make a house move. For others it will chime at a deeper level. Try to - Focus on the future and not the past. For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1223

With fiery Mars in your sign this month, you have a drive and a passion that is brilliant for you but watch others don’t see you as overbearing, as sometimes there’s an edge to you others can’t cope with. Saturn helps you in your daily routine as it changes on you this month and you’ll need a lot of concentration as a result. Those who hold you in admiration will still do exactly that, so no loss there. Your energy soars by end of month where fun, joy and laughter make a great impact. Try to - Not go over the score. Let’s begin on a serious note. Between now and the month of May next year whatever you are doing you will begin to reconstruct major things in your life. This doesn’t mean that love has to suffer. Don’t panic, it’s just that your approach must change. Saturn in your sign means you will see things from a different angle. This is a taste of things to come. Keeping finance, body and soul together is important and your own particular worth comes to the fore. The end of the month sees things lighten up considerably. Try to - Remember life can be fun too For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1226

For a while now, you have felt that you have been at everybody else’s beck and call and that their needs came first. With the sun in your sign, you are re-evaluating your needs. You’ll be self-centred, and not in negative way, and I have to say so you should be. Saturn starts a major cycle that helps you rid yourself of old fears and old ways of being. It will be fun to see how you change over this time. You start to look at financial change that’s important and, believe it or not, some reward will be there. Try to - Have some quiet time For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1227

After looking at your career under the microscope, whether accepting rewards you have been given or your ability to begin again, this time is for you as regards ambition. Start well. Anything that comes along will have to be stripped to bare bones for real ambition to work. But as the sun enters your sign later on this month, everything will become a lot clearer than it has been for a while. Your energy returns, as does your usual Sagittarius upbeat outlook. Try to - See things as they really are For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1228

To speak of change to you is something by this point you are used to. With Pluto in your sign, whether direct or retrograde, the feeling of change is here. Saturn has also changed and helped you look directly at an abundant reward for hard work, or to see things as they really are. They need your energy to be adjusted. Although things are sociable for you at the beginning of the month, you may find yourself becoming more introverted, which is no bad thing as you’ll need to regroup. With Christmas fast on your heels, you’ll need to plan carefully. Try to - Remain efficient and effective. For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1229

Now is the time to put everything into a place of learning. Grasp opportunities, as you shine to the world at the moment. Why not think about long term moves in your career. You might go down the road of a new you with a change of image, perhaps. You’ll establish yourself as whatever it is you want to the world know you can do. Standing up to injustice will prove to be a success but, remember, a social time approaches you by end of the month. Christmas doesn’t begin this early but may do in your case. Try to - Stay within your limits For your week/month ahead call 0906 757 1230

Although you felt you have had no freedom lately, it will return to you now. You have been battling for either approval or balance as far as partnerships are concerned. This now lifts and you feel better for it. Your mind is alive with thoughts of the long term as you see brand new structures coming your way and a new path to follow. You will find that you are under the spotlight by the end of the month and feeling and being yourself is where it’s at, so please don’t be afraid to pull out all the stops and assert your individuality.
