Publieke debat bepaald door sound bites N / Het Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam is het parallelprogramma tijdens Art Amsterdam en vormt een verbindende schakel tussen de instellingen voor hedendaagse kunst.

Dit jaar werd aangesloten bij de Spinoza Manifestatie en is het project ontworpen en vormgegeven door de masterstudenten Ontwerpen van het Sandberg Instituut. Zij hebben de politieke kant van de kunst gezocht.

Over Baruch de Spinoza wordt gezegd dat hij de eerste staatkundige denker van de moderne tijd zou zijn geweest, die openlijk zijn voorkeur voor de democratische staatsvorm tot uiting bracht. Volgens hem is de ware staat, een staat die vrijheid biedt voor iedereen, ook – of misschien vooral – aan hen die anders denken, andere religies belijden of conflicterende ideeën uiten.

Sommigen noemen hem de grondlegger van onze democratie. Maar staat deze op dit moment nog zo recht overeind?

Anders-zijn In tijden van crisis, zoals de huidige financiële, is de democratie het meest kwetsbaar. We mogen stemmen, we mogen vrij spreken en de overheid bekritiseren, maar alles wat we denken en zeggen heeft volgens fascismeexpert Emilio Gentile (NRC, 2-10 ’08) geen effect meer op wat de overheid doet: “velen van de democratisch gekozen leiders gedragen zich niet volgens de democratische principes.

Ze hebben niet meer het morele gezag om de democratie te verdedigen”. Daar komt bij dat de journalistiek, uit angst om de aandacht te verliezen, over de gehele breedte steeds bondiger wordt. “Het moordende tempo dat op televisie de norm is, heeft als gevolg dat het publieke debat sterk bepaald wordt door mensen die in staat en bereid zijn om uitsluitend in sound

bites te redeneren,” stelt filosoof Rob Wijnberg (NRC, 7-3 ’09). Eenduidige, stellige politici blijken vaker uitgenodigd te worden dan hun intellectuelere en genuanceerdere collega’s.

“De rechtsstaat zou juist de verscheidenheid van de publieke ruimte moeten bewaken en fasciliteren,” pleit prof. dr. Halleh Ghorashi in haar oratie ‘Paradoxen van Culturele erkenning’ (VU, 2006). Geheel in de lijn van Spinoza benadrukt ze dat democratie veel meer is dan de vrijheid om je stem te mogen uitbrengen. “In tegenstelling tot wat vaak wordt beweerd, gaat het bij democratie niet alleen om de meerderheid maar vooral om de ruimte voor de minderheid. Het draait niet zozeer om gelijkheid, maar om de erkenning van verschil of anderszijn. Dit belangrijke aspect van democratie vraagt om een cultuur van democratie waarin ruimte wordt geschapen voor het anders-zijn.”

Protest Wellicht is kunst bij uitstek het domein van de andersdenkenden, de nieuwe ideeën en onaangepaste vormen. Dit domein maakt, in deze opvatting, letterlijk democratische ruimte. En dat is de leidende gedachte geweest voor de vormgeving van het Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam 2009.

Studenten van het Sandberg Instituut hebben met de ideeën van Spinoza in hun achterhoofd gereageerd op de huidige ‘hyper-democratie’ waar “meer en meer politici ‘power-quotes’ gebruiken en populistische uitspraken doen om constant aandacht te vragen van het publiek”. Met hun bijdrage expliciteren de studenten deze tendens door pakkende sound bites uit hun context te lichten, en kernwoorden te vervangen door ‘kunst’ of ‘kunstenaar’. Met als resultaat vervreemdende zinnen die de idee van vrijheid van meningsuiting en het domein van de

kunst aan elkaar koppelen. Als een tijdelijk protest zijn spandoeken en posters opgehangen op de gevels en entree’s van de instellingen. Op veel plaatsen is de TMA-geluidsinstallatie te horen waar het laatste internationale nieuws volgens eenzelfde ‘filter’ is bewerkt. Plots zijn het Irakeze kunstenaars die ten strijde trekken...

Daarnaast hebben de deelnemende instellingen specifiek nagedacht over het spanningsveld tussen kunst en democratie en zijn er extra evenementen georganiseerd. Van een democratische ontbijt in het Lloyd Hotel tot 35 legendarische speeches in ‘Upload Cinema’ bij de Brakke Grond.

De Service Garage vraagt zich middels een tentoonstelling af wat de invloed van de krediet crisis is voor kunst en kunstenaars, en Beehive discussieert tijdens een speciale lunch of kunst op de werkvloer wel een verrijking is. In het kader van de Spinoza Manifestatie organiseert Thomas Hirschorn ‘The Bijlmer Spinoza Festival’, laat Mediamatic filosofische vragen achter in de openbare ruimte en toont Smart Project Space een tentoonstellling over momenten waarop de rede ons in de steek laat.

Democratische ruimte Dit als geheel vormt een tijdelijke context waarbinnen de instellingen zich presenteren: een dialoog over de ‘democratische ruimte’, alsmede een uitnodiging om de kunst binnen dit kader te beschouwen en de discussie voort te zetten. Want juist in deze crisis-tijd is het belangrijk om te benadrukken wat kunst betekent voor het publieke discours en daarmee voor de democratische cultuur.

Intensief werd er door de masterstudenten van de afdeling Ontwerpen gezocht naar uitspraken die pasten binnen hun visie van het Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam. Omdat het ‘museum’ dit jaar onderdeel is van de Spinoza Manifestatie verdiepten ze zich in het werk van Spinoza als aanzet voor de visuele uitwerking.

Over het grafische concept van dit uitgebreide project – spandoeken, posters, tassen, krant, website, geluidswerken en vervoer tussen de instellingen – bogen zich dit jaar zeven masterstudenten: Krimo Benlaloua, Camila Bustamante, Pinar Demirdag, Annelou van Griensven, Henrik van Leeuwen, Viola Renate en Matthias Schreiber. “Het denken van Spinoza is nog steeds actueel en de vrijheid van het woord staat opnieuw ter discussie,” stelt Renate. “Bij het brainstormen vroegen we ons af hoe we Spinoza’s gedachten konden vertalen naar de moderne tijd,” vertelt van Leeuwen.

“Zo kwamen we uit op recente populistische uitspraken van politici,” vult van Griensven aan. “Velen gebruiken power-quotes om hun punt te maken, en stemmen te winnen: alles is gecomprimeerd. Eigenlijk zijn we allemaal beperkt in onze tijd. Als metafoor voor deze gedachte hebben we zulke powerquotes als uitgangspunt genomen.”

Anarchistisch element Voor de uiteindelijke keuze van de citaten zocht het team naar uitspraken in het recente nieuws. Waarbij telkens een politiek woord – zoals politicus, immigrant of markt – vervangen is door het woord kunstenaar of kunst.

“De spandoeken en posters met deze uitspraken die aan de gevels van de instellingen zullen hangen zijn een vorm van protest,” legt Renate uit. “Mensen moeten nadenken over de uitspraken van politici. Ze gedragen zich alsof ze sterren zijn en de massa neemt dit voor lief. Wij willen met dit project de menigte confronteren. Voor een week nemen we de façades van de instituten over als anarchistisch element.”

Behalve de gevels van de instellingen maakte het zevental ook het passe-partout. Direct werd duidelijk dat dat een tas moest worden. “Deze tas biedt vrij entree bij alle instellingen,” legt van Griensven uit “waardoor de bezoeker in zekere zin gedwongen is ermee rond te lopen en zich daardoor te identificeren met de power-quote op de tas.” “Er is nauwelijks keuze mogelijk,” vult Schreiber aan. Renate: “Hoe politici omgaan met democratie, zo gaan wij om met de bezoeker. Wij dwingen hem tot het dragen van de tas – anders kunnen ze niet met de Citroën mee, niet gratis naar het openings-

feest, niet gratis naar de instellingen.”

Of ze ook zelf de nodige hinder opgelegd kregen? “Wij moesten echt vechten voor hetgeen we hebben ontworpen. Eigenlijk waren we graag extremer te werk gegaan, bijvoorbeeld in de keuze van de quotes. Maar de instellingen bleken die citaten niet te willen als spandoek of poster,” vertelt van Leeuwen “En zelfs in het gematigde ontwerp zijn er nog een aantal instellingen die uiteindelijk afhaakten.” “Ze wilden niet geassocieerd worden met radicale gedachten of met een identiteit die associaties oproept met de kraak-beweging,” vult Renate aan. “Eigenlijk typerend voor het huidige politieke klimaat.”

Communicatie middel Kan kunst de politiek veranderen?

“Misschien soms, maar over het algemeen zelden tot niet. Ons project is een communicatie middel,” vertelt Schreiber.

“Je moet realistisch blijven. Het gaat ons erom dat de boodschap aankomt.

Wij willen mensen voor een moment op een andere manier laten denken.” Van Leeuwen: “Het beste is als wij het radertje een klikje in het hoofd kunnen doordraaien, zonder dwingend te sturen.”

Kunst en populisme niet in één tasje “Bij elkaar een uniek ontwerp dat een ondefinieerbare spanning toont.

De aanpak van de studenten maakt het ontwerp echt en onecht tegelijkertijd, serieus en op het randje van de ironie, vangend en missend, politiek en voorbij het politieke,” analyseert Annelys de Vet. “Het is een spanning die een ontwerper in zijn eentje niet had kunnen bereiken; de kracht zit hem juist in de optelsom van de verschillende mentaliteiten. De dialoog tussen de studenten zet zich voort in het ontwerp.”

Vast staat dat kunst en populistische politiek moeilijk samen gaan in een tasje. Tijdens het Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam draagt de bezoeker dus letterlijk zijn eigen ballast.

They never hide from history.” Over the past few months, countless power quotes like this one echoed through the halls of the Sandberg Institute. The master’s students in the design department were on an intensive search for statements fitting their vision for the Temporary Museum Amsterdam.

Because the ‘museum’ is part of My Name Is Spinoza this year, they immersed themselves in the philosopher’s work to fuel their visual creation.

Public debate based on sound bites E / The Temporary Museum Amsterdam programme runs parallel to Art Amsterdam and links the various contemporary art institutions. This year, the project is connected to My Name Is Spinoza and has been designed by the Sandberg Institute’s master’s students in design. The students have turned their attention to the political side of art.

Baruch de Spinoza is said to have been the modern era’s first political thinker; he called himself a democrat and openly expressed his preference for the democratic state. According to him, the true state is one that offers liberty to everyone, even – or perhaps especially – those who think differently, practice other religions or express conflicting ideas. Some call Spinoza the founder of our democracy. But is that democracy still stable today?

Recognition of difference In a crisis, such as the current financial one, democracy is at its most vulnerable. We can still vote, speak freely and criticise the government, but, according to fascism expert Emilio Gentile (NRC Handelsblad, 2 October 2008), nothing we think and say has any effect on what the government does. “Many of the democratically elected leaders do not behave according to democratic principles. They no longer have the moral authority to defend democracy.”

In addition, journalism, out of the fear of losing attention, becomes increasingly terse across the board. “The breakneck pace that is the norm on TV means public debate is strongly determined by people who are willing and able to argue exclusively in sound bites,” says philosopher Rob Wijnberg (NRC Handelsblad, 7 March 2009). Unambiguous, decisive politicians are invited to speak more often than their more intellectual and nuanced colleagues. “The unfortunate consequence is that the inclination to reflect diminishes in everyone,” Wijnberg says. “The journalists think, ‘Depth won’t reach the public’; the politicians know, ‘Depth won’t make the news’; and finally, the public itself wonders, ‘Why think about something that will have already made way for the next riot by tomorrow?”

In her oration ‘Paradoxes of Cultural Recognition’ (VU, 2006), Professor Halleh Ghorashi argues that the state should protect and facilitate difference in public space. In the spirit of Spinoza, she emphasises that democracy is

much more than the freedom to vote. In contrast to what is often claimed, Ghorashi argues, democracy is not just about the majority but, above all, about space for the minority. It’s not about equality so much as the recognition of difference. This important aspect of democracy demands a culture that allows people space to be different.

Protest Art is perhaps the ideal domain of those who think differently, of new ideas and untested forms. In this view, the field literally makes space for democracy. This serves as the driving idea behind the design of the Temporary Museum Amsterdam 2009.

With Spinoza’s ideas in mind, Sandberg Institute students have responded to the contemporary hyperdemocracy in which politicians increasingly use power quotes and make populist statements to constantly demand attention from the public. In their work, the students highlight this tendency by lifting arresting sound bites from their contexts and replacing key words with ‘art’ or ‘artist’. The result is startling sentences linking the idea of freedom of expression with the domain of art. Banners and posters will grace the facades and entrances of contemporary art institutions in a temporary protest. The TMA sound installation will be audible at numerous spots, with the latest international news processed through a filter. Suddenly, Iraqi artists are in combat...

In addition, the participating institutions have reflected on the field of tension between art and democracy, and organised extra events. These range from a ‘democratic breakfast’ at the Lloyd Hotel to Upload Cinema’s 35 legendary speeches at De Brakke Grond, which will also host a project featuring posters from the squatters’ movement.

The Service Garage will hold an exhibition asking what the effect of the credit crisis will be on art and artists, and Beehive will conduct a special lunch discussion on whether art truly enriches the workplace. As part of My Name Is Spinoza, Thomas Hirschorn will organise ‘the Bijlmer Spinoza Festival’, Mediamatic will place philosophical questions in public space, and Smart Project Space will hold an exhibition on times when reason has deserted us.

Democratic space All this makes up a temporary context within which the institutions will present themselves. It constitutes a dialogue about ‘democratic space’ as well as an invitation for visitors to look at art in this context and to take the discussion forward. In this time of crisis, it is particularly important to emphasise what art means for public discourse and thereby for democratic culture.

Anarchist element In choosing quotes, the team looked for statements reported in the news recently. They replaced political words like ‘politician’, ‘immigrant’ or ‘market’ with ‘artist’ or ‘art’. “The banners and posters with these statements that will be placed on the fronts of the institutions will function as a form of protest,” Renate explains. “People need to think about the statements politicians make. They act like stars, and the population accepts it. With this project, we want to confront the masses. For a week, we will take over the facades of the institutions as an anarchist element.”

Alongside the banners and posters, the seven students also designed the TMA pass. They knew immediately that it should take the form of a bag.

“The bag gives you free entry to all the institutions,” Van Griensven explains,

Were they themselves burdened in any way? “We really had to fight for what we designed,” Van Leeuwen says. “We actually would have liked to be more extreme, for example in our choice of quotes. But it turned out that the institutions didn’t want banners or posters with those quotes. And even with the toned-down design, some institutions ended up dropping out.” Renate adds, “They didn’t want to be associated with radical ideas, or with an identity that called forth associations with the squatters’ movement. It’s actually typical of the current political climate.”

Means of communication Can art change politics? “Maybe sometimes – but generally, seldom or never,” Schreiber says. “Our project is a means of communication. You have to stay realistic. What’s important to us is that the message gets through. We want to make people think differently for a minute.” Van Leeuwen says, “The best thing is if we can make a cog in people’s heads turn a little, without forcing it.”

Art and populism not in a bag “Altogether, the design is a unique one that evinces an ineffable tension.

The students’ approach makes the design real and unreal at the same time, both serious and at the edge of irony, on and off the mark, political and beyond the political,” says Annelys de Vet. “It’s a tension no designer could have achieved alone; its power lies in the sum of the different mentalities.

The dialogue between the students continues in the design.” What’s certain is that it’s difficult to fit art and populist politics into the same bag. During Temporary Museum Amsterdam, visitors will have to carry their own baggage.

De kunstmanifestatie My name is Spinoza / The art manifestation My name is Spinoza N / De kunstmanifestatie My name is Spinoza vindt plaats in mei, juni en september 2009 en biedt een platform aan kunstenaars, kunstinstellingen en publiek om het filosofische gedachtegoed van Spinoza en de onderwerpen waarover hij schreef op een prikkelende manier onder de aandacht te brengen. De ideeën van Spinoza zijn in deze tijd onverminderd actueel omdat ze binnen een samenhangende leer betekenis geven aan begrippen als waarheid, god, natuur, recht, deugd, vrijheid, rede, blijdschap en droefheid.

Seven master’s students – Krimo Benlaloua, Camila Bustamante, Pinar Demirdag, Annelou van Griensven, Henrik van Leeuwen, Viola Renate and Matthias Schreiber – worked on the graphic concept for this year’s extensive project, comprising banners, posters, bags, a newspaper, a website, sound pieces, and transport between the participating institutions. “Spinoza’s thought is still relevant, and freedom of speech is being questioned again,” says Renate. Van Leeuwen says, “In the brainstorming phase, we asked ourselves how we could translate Spinoza’s ideas for the modern era.”

Van Griensven adds, “We thought of populist statements made recently by politicians. Many of them use power quotes to make their points and win votes. Everything is compromised. In fact, everyone’s time is limited. As a metaphor for this idea, we used the power quotes as our starting point.”

“which means that, in a sense, visitors are forced to carry it around, and therefore identify with the power quote on the bag.” Schreiber adds, “There’s hardly any choice.” Renate says, “We treat the visitors in the same way that politicians treat democracy. We force them to carry the bag – otherwise, they can’t get into the Citroën, or go to the opening party for free, or to the institutions.”

Spinoza heeft een vragende en onderzoekende houding die past bij de kunst en waarin kunstenaars zich herkennen. In samenwerking met de deelnemende instellingen zijn kunstenaars uitgenodigd nieuwe werken te maken, ter ‘individuele verrijking’ van beschouwers of om de publieke opinie uit te dagen en op te proef te stellen. Bewust is daarbij de publieke ruimte opgezocht, als plaats voor dialoog en discussie.

E / The art manifestation My name is Spinoza, held in May, June and September 2009, offers artists, art and cultural institutions and members of the public a platform

for a lively exploration of Spinoza’s thinking and the subjects of his writing. Embedded within a cohesive framework, Spinoza’s ideas articulate concepts such as truth, god, the natural world, law, virtue, freedom, reason, happiness and sadness, and are no less relevant today.

Spinoza’s critical, curious outlook resonates with the arts, and is a standpoint shared by many artists. In collaboration with the participating institutions, various artists have been invited to make new work, to ‘individually enrich’ viewers or confront or challenge public opinion. With this in mind, the public space was chosen as offering the most appropriate context for dialogue and debate.

My name is Spinoza was conceived by the Amsterdamse Spinoza

Kring and developed by SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Space).

Despite being one of the founders of the liberal values with which the capital defines itself, few tributes to Spinoza can be found in Amsterdam.

Rather than a single monumental work of art, it was decided that a versatile, multi-faceted monument in the form of a manifestation would be a more fitting memorial. My name is Spinoza is also the first step towards setting up a Spinoza visitor centre where the art works and registrations of the debates and performances will be held and offer an international public a chance to consider Spinoza’s tenets from fresh perspectives.

Interview with Patricia Keurentjes, eigenaar / owner Bloomberry Pinar Demirdag : Wanneer was je in het bezit van je eerste vintage meubelstuk?

When did you have your first vintage furniture?

N / Patricia Keurentjes : Mijn partner en ik zijn zo’n tien tot twaalf jaar geleden begonnen met verzamelen, de een wat actiever dan de ander. Nu ruim 3 jaar geleden, een jaar na onze eerste ontmoeting, zijn Leander en ik Bloomberry gestart. Zelf heb ik een zwak voor de soms bijna poëtische ontwerpen van Finn Juhl, Italiaanse ontwerpen. De Medea van Vittorio Nobili is een van mijn persoonlijke favorieten. Mijn smaak is continu in ontwikkeling en ieder nieuw ontwerp wat ik ontdek, beïnvloed me. Op dit moment ben ik erg gecharmeerd van de Braziliaanse ontwerper Sergio Rodriques en Percival Lafer en ben onder invloed van Leander de modernisten meer en meer gaan waarderen. Leander is juist begonnen met Prouve en Eames en heeft daarna de meer vrouwelijke ontwerpers zoals Charlotte Perriand en George Nelson omarmt.

E / About ten to twelve years ago we both started collecting, one more actively than the other. About three years ago, a year after we met, Leander and I started Bloomberry. I myself have a weakness for the almost poetic designs by Finn Juhl, some Italian designers, the medea chair by Vittorio Nobili is a personal favourite. My taste is developing continuously and every new piece and designer we discover has an effect on it. Nowadays I very much enjoy Brazilian design, such as Sergio Rodriques and Percival Lafer and was influenced by Leander in my appreciation for more modernist design. Leander started with Prouve and Eames and in the last few years he in his turn is influenced by me, and developed a love for the more female designers, such as Finn Juhl, George Nelson and Charlotte Perriand.

Was je van plan om zo succesvol te worden zoals je nu bent? Were you planning to get as big as you are now?

N / Bloomberry is een uit de hand gelopen hobby, in die zin was er geen sprake van een concreet plan. We hebben zeker onze ambities en die hebben in de drie jaar dat we nu met Bloomberry bezig zijn steeds meer vorm gekregen. Het hart van het bedrijf is en blijft de liefde voor mooie stukken en het verhaal dat ze met zich meebrengen. Als individueel stuk, als fysieke uiting van de tijdsgeest en in de context van de cultuur en de technische mogelijkheden van die tijd.

E / Bloomberry is a hobby that got out of hand, so in that respect we did not really have a plan. We do have ambitions, which are getting more and more clear after three years having the company, but the heart of Bloomberry has been and always will be the love for beautiful pieces and the stories they tell. As individual pieces and as a connecting line and a physical appearance of the culture and technical possibilities of the period of its creation.

Heb je ooit spijt gehad na het verkopen van een voorwerp waar je erg aan gehecht was? Did you ever feel bad when you sold an item that you were really attached to?

N / Het is soms moeilijk om afscheid te nemen van een meubel, maar ik heb nooit spijt. Er zijn belangrijkere dingen om je echt

door te laten raken. Aan de andere kant, we verkopen niet zomaar alles aan iedereen. Als het niet goed voelt en er geen match is tussen de potentiële koper en het stuk gaat de deal niet door. Met de uitzonderlijk zeldzame banken van de kloostering en architect Dom Hans van der Laan zijn we zeer selectief en hebben we al een aantal mensen teleur moeten stellen. Het klinkt misschien aanmatigend, maar ik wil mijzelf in de ogen kunnen blijven kijken.

E / Sometimes it’s hard to let go of a piece, but I never feel bad. There are much more important things in live to get real emotional about. However, we do not sell everything to everybody. Sometimes if it does’t feel good to us, and there isn’t a match between the object and the potential buyer, we do not sell it. With the extremely rare original monastery benches of Dom Hans van der Laan we are very selective and have disappointed a few people already. I know it sounds judgemental, but I want to keep true to myself and my feelings.

Ziet je woning er net zo uit als je winkel? Do you have other collections than furniture?

N / Jazeker, we hebben een mooie verzameling houten speelgoed van het vroegere Ado, een grote hoeveelheid Frans gebruikskeramiek zoals oude mosterdpotten, schalen voor dagelijks gebruik, een beginnende kunstcollectie en de belangrijkste; een schitterende verzameling mooie momenten.

E / Yes, we have a wonderful collecting of the early wooden childrens furniture from Ado, a lot of old French farmer ceramics, such as mustard pots, bowls etc. all for every day use, a growing art collection and most importantly a wonderful collection of beautiful moments.

Biedt deze baan jou (en je partner) de mogelijkheid om ergens anders aan te werken, of neemt het je tijd volledig in beslag? Is this job allowing you (and your partner) to work on something else or is it occupying your entire time?

N / Het is goed bestede tijd. Ik houd mijn uren niet bij en als we naar Italië gaan om in te kopen wordt het gecombineerd met een vakantie met het gezin. Naast Bloomberry hebben we onze uitgeverij waar we ons bezighouden met Bob de Bouwer, Teletubbies, dra en andere bekende kinder TV karakters, we hebben een geweldige dochter van twee, een flinke tuin, familie en vrienden en we houden van lekker koken. We willen alles zo natuurlijk mogelijk met elkaar voegen, zodat we aan alles plezier beleven en het niet voelt als werk of verplichting.

E / It is time very well spent and enjoyed.

I do not register the hours and a buying trip, to for example Italy, is always combined with a family holiday. Apart from Bloomberry we have our publishing Company which publishes, Teletubbies Bob the Builder, Dora and many more well known TV characters, we have a lovely daughter, a big garden, family and friends and we love to cook. We try to make everything flow together, so all is enjoyed and little is felt as taking up time.

Lloyd Hotel & Culturele Ambassade N / Het Lloyd Hotel is een gebouw uit 1921 dat door architecten, vormgevers en kunstenaars is getransformeerd tot een hotel van één tot vijf sterren. De Culturele Ambassade informeert gasten en bezoekers over kunst en cultuur in Amsterdam en verzorgt culturele activiteiten in het

Lloyd Hotel. In verschillende ruimtes zijn exposities ingericht en regelmatig zijn er concerten, voorstellingen of films.

Felle kleuren wisselen elkaar af in een natuurlijke omgeving, waar bergen en dieren de hoofdrol spelen. De lagen, de diepte en de bizarre composities maken het werk van Roosmarijn Schoonwelle boeiend. Het werk is een zoektocht naar de redenen, de twijfel en het verhaal.

E / It is almost a dream, an unreal world in which here and there something recognizable can be found. Bright colors alternate in a natural environment, where mountains and animals are key players. Bizarre scenes initially seem both intense and sweet, however at second sight another spectacle unfolds. The layers, depths and bizarre compositions make the work of Roosmarijn Schoonwelle fascinating.

The work is a search for reasons, doubts and stories.

Beehive Het Harde Potlood N / Het Harde Potlood is een kunstenaarscollectief sinds 2006 van Richtje Reinsma, Roosmarijn Schoonewelle en Heleen Wiemer. Hun werk is experimenteel en multidisciplinair, en bestaat onder andere uit installaties, performances, muurtekeningen en kruisbestuivingen daartussen. Het Harde Potlood verstaat de kunst een geheel te smeden uit grillige delen die niet op elkaar willen passen. Verschillende tekeningen krijgen een plek in de kantorentuin.

Ze gaat in op actuele wereldproblemen en maakt zo een update van de 'Bed-in for Peace' van John Lennon en Yoko Ono 40 jaar geleden. Zo staat er op de lakens "I stay in bed to save the planet" of "I stay in bed to reduce my waste". Volgens John Lennon is humor een belangrijk wapen tegen geweld. 'Bed-in for Peace' was een positieve, eenvoudige en ludieke actie. Een aantal kamers worden voorzien van Viola Renate's dekbedden. Een opgemaakt bed is te zien op platform 3 van het Lloyd Hotel. NDSM Werf Valerie van Leersum N / In het hoofdgebouw op de NDSM werf laat Valerie van Leersum divers werk zien. Ook bouwt ze ter plaatse aan een installatie in samenwerking met Ellen Kromhout. Hierin nodigen zij elke dag een gastkunstenaar van de werf uit om tijdelijk iets aan hun beeld toe te voegen. “Door collega's uit te nodigen om het beeld voor korte duur te laten transformeren door er iets aan toe te voegen geeft een andere lading aan het beeld deze interactie geeft mij de spanning die ik graag opzoek.”

NIMK Presentaties MediaArtMobile N / Van 8 t/m 23 mei presenteert het Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst de schetsontwerpen voor een nieuw 'MediaKunstMobiel', een verplaatsbare ruimte waarin mediakunst getoond wordt en ondermeer workshops worden gegeven. De opdracht hiervoor is i.s.m. SKOR uitgegaan naar : Kevin van Braak, Michiel Kluiters, Maurer United en Peter Stel. Daarnaast zijn Tillmann Meyer-Faje, Andre Kodde en Lucia Luptakova namens het Sandberg Instituut en 11 studenten van de TU Eindhoven gevraagd om ook een ontwerp te maken. Uit de schetsen wordt een ontwerp geselecteerd. Wanneer het gerealiseerd is gaat het MediaKunstMobiel vanaf eind 2009 langs o.a. scholen en festivals reizen, met een divers programma van workshops, installaties en videoprogramma's.

E / From May 8 through 23 the Netherlands Media Art Institute presents the rough designs for a new 'MediaArtMobile', a mobile space in which media art can be shown and workshops and other programs given. In cooperation with the Art and Public Space Foundation (SKOR), the commission for this was extended to Kevin van Braak, Michiel Kluiters, Maurer United and Peter Stel. In addition, Tillmann Meyer-Faje, Andre Kodde and Lucia Luptakova, from the Sandberg Institute, and 11 students from the Technical University at Eindhoven were asked to prepare a design. One design will be selected from these sketches. When it is realized at the end of 2009 the MediaArtMobile will go on the road to schools and festivals, with a diverse program of workshops, installations and video programs.

NIMk Solo-presentatie Köken Ergun N / Gedacht vanuit de denkbeelden van Spinoza worden drie werken van de Turkse, in Berlijn woonachtige kunstenaar Köken Ergun getoond.

Zijn video's gaan in op verschillende aspecten rond de Turkse republiek, zoals de omgang met religie, vrijheid van meningsuiting, nationalisme, tradities en militarisme. De laatste tijd komt de relatie en verhouding tot West-Europa in zijn werk meer naar voren, zoals in de recente video-performance ‘Tanklove’ (2008).

De film ‘The Flag’ (Bayrak, 2006) werd opgenomen in Turkije, tijdens het “Feest van de Kinderen”, en documenteert de pompeuze patriottistische performance, die is bedacht door volwassenen maar uitgevoerd door kinderen. En de video ‘Untitled’ (2004) heeft Köken Ergun gemaakt naar aanleiding van de toenemende discussie over de hoofddoek-problematiek.

E / Conceived from the ideas of Spinoza three works by the Turkish, Berlin based artist Köken Ergun are being shown. His videos deal with various aspects regarding the Turkish Republic, such as its handling of religion, freedom of expression, nationalism, traditions and militarism. Lately relations with and attitudes toward Western Europe are coming more to the fore in his work, as is the case in the recent video performance ‘Tanklove’ (2008) in which, curiously enough, a tank drives into a village in Denmark. An unusual, distinctly not everyday icon of war - a tank – appears in the ordinary street scene of the village of Jyderup. The Film ‘The Flag’ was shot during the ‘April 23rd Children’s Day’. This split screen film documents a pompous patriotic performance devised by elders to be performed by children.

Patriotism becomes a hard-lined nationalism.

And amidst growing discussions on the headscarf issue the artist made the work 'Untitled' (2004). With this video Köken Ergun wanted to express his personal protest, embodying the stress on the contemporary Islamic body.

Open Source Amsterdam Straat van Sculpturen N / Open Source Amsterdam bestaat uit een beeldende kunstroute van Metrostation Kraaiennest naar NS-station Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA (of omgekeerd) en werd samengesteld door Helga Lasschuijt. Onderweg krijgt de bezoeker een beeld van het dynamische Amsterdam Zuidoost. Alle kunstenaars maakten een werk, gebaseerd op verleden, heden en toekomst van de veelkleurige Bijlmer. Aan het begin van de drie kilometer lange routebevindt zich – spectaculair gelegen op het dak van de parkeergarage Kraaiennest – het zenuwcentrum van de manifestatie.

N / Sinds de Verlichting wordt de ratio in de Westerse samenleving door velen beschouwd als de meest hoogstaande eigenschap van de mens. Toch wordt de menselijke psyche evenzeer gedreven door lust of verlangen en andere emoties, zoals Spinoza al aangaf. Hij bood principes aan die ons moeten beschermen tegen de kracht van die passies die verhinderen dat wij tot inzicht en begrip komen.

De relatie tussen rede en passie is dan ook een essentieel element in ons streven naar een bevredigend leven als individu en als collectief. In de tentoonstelling komen werken aan bod waarin deze gecompliceerde verhouding centraal staat.

E / Since the Enlightenment the faculty of reason is widely considered to be the most noble of human capacities. However Spinoza pointed out that the human psyche is also driven by desire and complementary feelings, calling for a careful blending of matters of the mind and matters of the heart.

The exhibition adreses the delicate relationship between control and zeal – both of which can serve as an instrument to acquire knowledge or forge change in the personal and political areas of the so-called ‘social imaginarium’.

outLINE exhibition Beyond the labyrinth Jakup Ferri, Serge Onnen and Maria Zervou invited by curator Christine van den Bergh N / 'Beyond the labyrint', laat zich lezen als een beeldverhaal, een storyboard dat geen lineaire structuur nastreeft, maar ijvert voor een multi- narratief experiment. De tentoonstelling zal de rol van tekenen als medium binnen diverse disciplines benadrukken o.a. muurtekeningen, ruimtelijke installatie, animatie en dia projectie.
