(CON)TEmPORARy mUSEUm AmSTERDAm time FOR temPORARiNess (Con)Temporary Museum Amsterdam engenders a brief but intensive moment of symbiosis between prominent Amsterdam-based art institutes. The 2006 edition proved a success and again this year the floor plan of the Museum is the entire city. The halls of this museum are made up by: De Ateliers, De Balie, Foam_ Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, Huis Marseille, Lloyd Hotel & Culturele Ambassade, Nederlands Instituut voor mediakunst, Reservaat, SKOR – De Inkijk, SMART Project Space, Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum CS en W139. Art Amsterdam is where the beat is. Visitors are provided with a free passe-partout, a go-as-you-please ticket that gives access to all ‘galleries’ of the (Con)Temporary Museum Amsterdam. Each individual institute realises a programme that shows work by artists who are represented by galleries at Art Amsterdam, ephemeral installations, guided tours and video programmes. De Balie is the venue for daily debates concerning recent developments in art and the art market. this year the galleries at Art Amsterdam and the institutes at the (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam have established an intense cooperation. photography museum Foam, for instance, in concerted action with german gallery Conrads presents work by young photographer Sacha Weidner. sMArt project space has put together a film and video programme with work by contemporary international artists who are represented by the galleries that participate in Art Amsterdam. ART AND THE MARKET de Balie is the venue where debates are organized about the relationship between art and the market. More and more people are willing to invest in art; what are the consequences of this for fine art? german art critic and publisher Isabelle Graw kicks off on the 8th of May as she presents Money matters. on thursday the10th of May in collaboration with Kunsten ’92 the focal point of the debate will be the impact of private money. Ann Demeester (de Appel), Erik Hitters (erasmus university), Renee Steenberger (nrC) et al. will take issue on the basis of short statements and enter into discussion. the last in the series of debates will be on the 11th of May: cultural economist Arjo Klamer and fine artist Marc Bijl will present the sKor lecture. on each occasion, a supporting programme, put together by the international curators of Close Connection, will precede the evening.

TEMPORARy ART the museum, and a number of works of art are temporary and transient. this allows for other, illuminating and clarifying, perspectives. At the dutch institute for Video Art Montevideo/tBA the temporary nature of some of the works exhibited takes up central position. Video and sound installations breathe the momentary, the ephemeral and at the same time refer to wishes and ideas that live and linger on. in the restaurant of the lloyd hotel the transient installation Tape Drawing by Aam Solleveld is shown. het reservaat is the temporary working environment of various organizations in the field of design. during the time of the event artist Toine Klaassen is assigned to make a ‘workable artwork’ that functions as an interior. Klaassen and director Peik Suyling (reservaat) will make the visitors at the (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam launch an action to experience the reservation live. CITy AS MUSEUM the stedelijk Museum sets up guided tours to visit the exhibition Mapping the City. this show throws light on the relationship between artists and the city. it focuses on the city as social entity and community, on actions, poses and urban rituals. Foam shows work by Awoiska van der Molen who takes photographs of cities that lack animosity, cities that have an uncomfortable, uneasy atmosphere. At the sMBA the film installation The Rise is shown; Nina Fischer and Maraon el Sani created this project as a reaction to a residence at the Zuidas (south Axis) in Amsterdam. sKor (stichting Kunst en openbare ruimte / Foundation Art and public space) runs an excursion that traces a trajectory past exceptional artworks in the public space of Amsterdam. to ensure that visitors can live the experience to the fullest, Audi has set up a special action: it provides five brand new cars with a driver. the A6 and A8 Audi vehicles will provide a shuttle service between de rAi and the city and vice versa. the passe-partout contains vouchers that can be exchanged for this service. several venues serve the (Con)temporary Museum Menu. At the entrance places guides of the (Con)temporary Museum will treat the visitors to information.

de groepstentoonstelling Mapping the City richt zich op de relatie tussen kunstenaars en de stad vanaf circa 1960 tot heden. Centraal staat de manier waarop kunstenaars hun blik werpen op de stad. de nadruk ligt daarbij op de stad als sociale gemeenschap, op handelingen, poses en stadse rituelen. hoe ervaren wij de straat? hoe gedragen wij ons? hoe bewegen wij ons door de stad? de tentoonstelling bestaat uit een combinatie van werken uit de collectie van het stedelijk Museum en internationale bruiklenen, met een accent op fotografie, videokunst en ruimtelijke installaties. Met onder andere video-installaties van vooraanstaande hedendaagse kunstenaars als Doug Aitken, Sarah Morris en Francis Alys. en werk van belangwekkende fotografen als Ed van der Elsken, William Klein en Jeff Wall. Mapping the City vertrekt vanuit de late jaren vijftig, toen debord zijn theorie van het ronddolen (1958) publiceerde. een ander beginpunt vormt de bekende This way Brouwn-reeks van Stanley Brouwn. Vanaf 1962 vroeg Brouwn aan willekeurige voorbijgangers in Amsterdam de weg van punt A naar B. de door de passant uitgetekende route voorzag hij telkens van de titel This way Brouwn.

LIGhTS AND DRAWINGS PAul CHAN licht en schaduw, in letterlijke en in metaforische betekenissen, staan centraal in deze tentoonstelling van Paul Chan (1973, hong Kong). in zes zalen zijn grote projecties, houtskooltekeningen, collages en digitale studies te zien. deze zijn samengebracht rond de animatiereeks The 7 Lights waar Chan sinds 2005 aan werkt en die uiteindelijk zeven projecties zal omvatten. in de tentoonstelling in het stedelijk Museum Cs, Chans eerste grote museale presentatie in europa, zijn alle tot nu toe voltooide lights voor het eerst bijeen gebracht. Allerlei tegenstellingen botsen met elkaar: bewegingen naar boven en naar beneden, binnen-buiten, langzaam-snel, licht-donker, chaos-orde, utopia en apocalyps, het heilige en het goddeloze. Chan verwijst in de cyclus uitvoerig naar het christendom en religie in het algemeen. de structuur van The 7 Lights is op te vatten als een omkering van de theorie van de rapture (het wegvoeren): de symbolen van de consumptiemaatschappij stijgen op naar de hemel en de mens valt letterlijk in ongenade. Chan verwijst hiermee ook naar de actuele wereldproblematiek: de tweestrijd tussen kapitalisme en idealisme.

W139 presenteert een tentoonstelling van schilderijen en tekeningen die is samengesteld door beeldend kunstenaar Sarah Verbeek. de schilders die ze heeft uitgekozen, lijken een ongecompliceerde verhouding tot hun medium te hebben. Ze houden van schilderen en ze doen het ook. het zijn geen ‘schilderbeesten’ die een roes nodig hebben om te kunnen werken. het zijn geen traagheidsfeteshisten. Ze voelen geen noodzaak om zich tot fotografie te verhouden. hun werk is geen commentaar of verantwoording. het is niet verkrampt en ook niet vormloos. er komen mensen, bomen en driehoeken in voor. de verf is dun en de gebaren zijn rustig. Wie goed naar deze schilderijen kijkt, kan zien dat kunst een vanzelfsprekende menselijke behoefte is. en dat word wel eens vergeten. tijdens het afsluitende weekend van het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam op 12 en 13 mei biedt sMArt project space onderdak aan Open House en zijn er rondleidingen voor de tentoonstelling en de studio in het hoofdgebouw. de kunstenaars ‘in residence’ zijn: Tim Braden, Job Koelewijn, Amalia Pica, Daniel Roth, Esther Tielemans. sMArt project space is permanent gevestigd in de vroegere pathologische Anatomie laboratoria van het Wilhelminaziekenhuis in de Amsterdamse wijk oud West. het sMArt project space blies deze buurt nieuw leven in en gaf een nieuwe toekomst aan het monumentale gebouw. Momenteel wordt er verbouwd: bedoeling is tentoonstellingsruimte te creëren van 700m2, drie filmzalen, een auditorium en een uitvoeringsruimte tien ateliers voor de residency programme, een café en restaurant en een clubgebouw voor leden. dit is de laatste kans om het gebouw in zijn oorspronkelijk staat te zien. ook delen van het gebouw die meestal niet toegankelijk zijn voor publiek.

een selectie van film- en videowerk van internationaal gerenommeerde kunstenaars, vertegenwoordigd door galerieën die deelnemen aan Art Amsterdam is te zien in Coded Cinema. Coded cinema is een intieme filmzaal die plaats biedt aan twaalf toeschouwers en 24 uur – dag en nacht dus – toegankelijk is. Coded Cinema wil de bioscoopbezoeker een nieuwe filmervaring gunnen. de liefhebber kan dan ook rustig en ontspannen film- en videowerk bekijken met een toegangscode van vier cijfers. het programma toont werk van: Ross Birrell, Hans Op de Beeck, Kota Ezawa, Arthur Kleinjan, Komen & Murphy, Ine Lamers, Shahryar Nashat, Maria Pask, Bulent Sangar, Michael Smith, Katarina Zdjelar, en anderen. EvERy WIND ThAT BLOWS het vaak extreme gedachtegoed van het einde van de 20ste eeuw stelt ons culturele erfgoed regelmatig zwaar op de proef. de handleiding van onze beschaving lijkt wel geschreven met bloed en tranen, maar die lijken alleen voor de misdeelden heel concreet. er is niet slechts deze intellectuele predispositie, er zijn ook een heleboel pijnpunten. hebben we dan de neiging om veel constructief potentieel toe te kennen aan de menselijk aard, net als in kunst? de tentoonstelling Every Wind That Blows erkent dat als het leven echt volledig tot ontplooiing wil komen, er verandering moet komen die nieuwe mogelijkheden opent. in de tentoonstelling wordt ondermeer werk getoond van Esra Ersen en Ahmet Ögüt.

ThE RISE NiNA FisCHeR & mAROAN el sANi in stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam is de filminstallatie The Rise te zien, het werk dat Nina Fischer en Maroan el Sani realiseerden tijdens hun vijf maanden durende residentieperiode aan de Amsterdamse Zuidas. de Zuidas is een economisch brandpunt in de stadsontwikkeling van Amsterdam en oefent door zijn toekomstige aansluiting op de hsl en zijn gunstige ligging nabij de nationale luchthaven vooral aantrekkingskracht uit op grote bank- en verzekeringsconglomeraten. de residentie, een initiatief van sMBA in samenwerking met het lectoraat Kunst & publieke ruimte en Virtueel Museum Zuidas, geeft internationale kunstenaars de mogelijkheid te verblijven in, en te reageren op, deze specifieke locatie.

ART AND ThE MARKET The art market thrives. The offer is not sufficient to meet the demand and selling prices boom. Auctioneering firms break records as regularly as clockwork. They attract a growing number of enthusiasts who are increasingly well off. The number of art fairs is on the up too. Collectors from all over the world are kept interested with trips, exclusive nights at hotels, funky parties and personal encounters with artists. Art fairs, where one can mingle with the international jet set, are topping the list of exclusive pleasure trips. Even fashion magazines publish art reviews and announce in the gossip columns who hangs out where and what kind of art was purchased. Is it fair to say that a new value system has come to the fore? Or a new type of art? These developments require critical reflection. At Art Amsterdam the (Con)Temporary Museum Amsterdam organises debates and lectures at De Balie that will take up the issue of the delicate relationship between art and the market. What consequences does the growing interest of investors have on fine art? How can a delicate balance be struck? How does private money affect art’s representation? Has collecting turned into a lifestyle for the wealthy? Should the role of the museum be reconsidered when the number of collectors keeps growing as well as their means? What is the best way for policy makers to react critically to this situation? These are some of the questions that will be tackled during three animated and inspiring evenings that start off with presentations by the international curators of Close Connections.

Isabelle Graw will demonstrate how the art market is becoming increasingly powerful when its comes to our defining the value of art since the 1980s. economic criteria are replacing artistic ones. What are the consequences for art under these circumstances? graw will describe these new conditions in order to conceptualise them. When dealing with works of art, we have to keep in mind their specificity. they are always two things at the same time: commodity And symbolic goods. once on the market, they have a price. But they cannot be reduced to their economic value. this tension explains why art does not obey the laws of neoclassical economy. While postulating that the market is not exterior to artistic production, graw nevertheless won’t subscribe to the market’s value system. she insists that the value of a work of art is not to be confused with it’s auction price. Isabelle Graw (1962) is the founding editor of the german art magazine Texte zur Kunst and professor of Art history in the hochschule für bildende Künste in Frankfurt (städelschule) and cofounder (with Daniel Birnbaum) of the Institut für Kunstkritik. she has published numerous texts and articles, her last publications include Die bessere Hälfte (2003), and is currently working on a book on art between the market and fashion.

SNAPShOT (IN TIME) Snapshot is een presentatie die plaatsvindt in het kader van tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam 2007 waarbij het tijdelijke karakter van een aantal werken centraal staat. er worden video- en geluidsinstallaties getoond die de nadruk leggen op het kortstondige en vluchtige, maar refereren aan voortlevende wensen of ideeën. Guadalupe (2003) is een geluidsinstallatie van de schotse Susan Philipsz waar geluiden van een drukke openbare plek hoorbaar zijn, een man het nummer I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry zingt en een vrouw vraagt naar de bus die naar guadalupe afreist. dit geluidswerk vormt een oorspronkelijk kale gang om tot een texaans busstation met een betoverende sfeer. het is een verhaal over onze wens naar onbekende plekken met exotische namen te willen reizen. het treurig-komische lied herinnert aan verlangens en de drang om te willen vluchten. in dit geluidswerk wordt gerefereerd aan het zoeken naar een plek, die nooit gevonden kan worden. de eenvoud en tegelijkertijd overweldigende intensiteit van philipsz’ werk komt goed naar voren in haar installatie Songs sung in the first person on themes of release, sympathy and longing (2003). Voor dit werk heeft ze vier populaire nummers van gram parsons, soft Cell, teenage Fanclub en the smiths a cappella gezongen en opgenomen. de eveneens schotse kunstenaar Ross Birrell is bekend vanwege zijn conceptuele performances die hij overal ter wereld uitvoert en vastlegt op video. The Interpretation of Dreams (2001), Brave New World (2001) en The Destiny of the World (2001) zijn momentopnames die korter dan een minuut duren en gaan over plekken en voorwerpen die historische ideologieën en utopieën symboliseren deze ‘groteverhalen van de geschiedenis’ zijn volgens hem verloren gegaan of verkeren in een toestand van crisis en worden op deze manier opnieuw onder de aandacht gebracht. TIJDELIJK CAFé daarnaast is er een speciaal tijdelijk café ingericht, waar verleidelijke zwartwitte versnaperingen worden geserveerd.

DARK MIRROR gelijktijdig met Snapshot (In Time) is de groepstentoonstelling Dark Mirror gratis te bezichtigen. deze tentoonstelling verkent de mens en zijn sociale conditionering in relatie tot het dierlijk instinct. internationaal gerenommeerde kunstenaars tonen het grensgebied tussen rationeel mens en dierlijk wezen. een schemergebied waar emotie en instinct voorop staan en sociale conditionering even verdwenen lijkt te zijn. de deelnemende kunstenaars reageren eigenzinnig op hun omgeving, waarbij aspecten als sociale code, de natuur en het dier in de werken naar voren komen. Met Carlos Amorales, Emmanuelle Antille, Marcus Coates, Mike Stubbs, Mark Wallinger en werken uit de collectie van Rick Buckley, Charlemagne Palestine, Jeremy Drummond, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Sterling Ruby, Joanna Rytel en Servaas.

WhAT’S GOING ON? PAss tRAVels onder de naam pass travels organiseert sKor regelmatig excursies langs kunstwerken in de openbare ruimte in heel nederland, samengesteld aan de hand van verschillende thema’s. eerder waren dat bijvoorbeeld kunst en de dood, interactiviteit en nieuwe media, lichtkunst, tussen sociaal engagement en stedelijke ontwikkeling, en kunst en landschap. ter gelegenheid van het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam is er een speciale pass travel georganiseerd What’s going on? langs bijzondere kunstwerken in de openbare ruimte van Amsterdam die recent gerealiseerd werden, waaronder een werk van Rob Johannesma bij de ‘Bibliotheek Bijzondere Collecties’ van de uVA en het Blauwe huis op iJburg, van Jeanne van Heeswijk. de geselecteerde kunstprojecten en de context waarin deze zijn ontstaan worden toegelicht door kunstenaars, kenners en betrokkenen. Voor de excursie (met toelichting) op zaterdag 12 mei kan men zich inschrijven (zie www. skor.nl of tel 020 672 2525). ook kan de route met eigen vervoer worden afgelegd met de informatiekaart die bij sKor verkrijgbaar is.

hOT SPOT de inkijk (kleine tentoonstellingsruimte van sKor op de hoek van de ruysdaelkade met de stadhouderskade) is tijdelijk ter beschikking gesteld aan andere (kunst)instellingen met plannen die raken aan het werkgebied van sKor. tijdens het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam wordt de inkijk gebruikt door de publieke omroep voor het project Hot Spot, dat een creatieve impuls wil bieden voor publieke programmamakers.

Close Connections is the recurring alternative programme of Art Amsterdam organised by Foundation iZA with the aim to trigger more extended collaboration within the art world. together with (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam, Kunsten ’92 organises a debate that takes as its theme the effects of private and public money respectively on the autonomy, vulnerability and overall position of institutes for fine art and individual artists. Auctioneering companies reach soaring selling prices. Companies and art institutes are diligently looking for ways to deal with sponsoring contracts diligently and cautiously. enormous amounts of private money are invested in culture. this development is quite extraordinary. does it have a flipside, a downside? Artists and independent art institutes do not seem to benefit from the ample money that is available. how can private money be used conscientiously and with concern? how does public money affect the representation of fine art institutes? these topics clearly touch upon the broader context of representation of art and culture in the netherlands. Erik Hitters (erasmus universiteit) wil moderate the debates. participants: Ann Demeester (de Appel), Laetitia de Leede (triodosbank), Ryclef Rienstra (Vandenende Foundation), Renee Steenbergen (nrC handelsblad) and Philip Tijsma (autor Amerikaanse toestanden from the publication Bedrijvige muses)

At the invitation of (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam, Foundation Art and public space (sKor) sets up the annual sKor lecture. this year the subject matter is the relationship between art commissions and the market. how does art in public space relate to the (art) market? public space is becoming economically valuable and consequently gets privatised; does this have an effect on the art that is commissioned? have they recently become part of marketing strategies or has this always been the case? these are some of the questions that cultural economist Arjo Klamer (erasmus university) and fine artist Marc Bijl will tackle. research and editing is conducted by sKor in collaboration with Atelier Veldwerk (Rudy Luijters and Onno Dirker).

TAPE DRAWING LLOyD 2007 AAm sOlleVeld op uitnodiging van de Culturele Ambassade maakt kunstenaar Aam Solleveld de monumentale en tijdelijke installatie Tape Drawing Lloyd 2006 in het restaurant van het lloyd hotel. tot 13 mei is het lloyd hotel daarmee een van de vluchtige museumzalen van het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam; na die datum wordt de Tape Drawing Lloyd 2007 van de muren gehaald. het werk van Aam solleveld bestaat uit tekeningen met grafietpotlood of tape waarin ze de psychologische betekenis van interieurs onderzoekt. het zijn decors, studio-ruimtes, vergaderzalen, of steigers, die een extra laag toevoegen aan bestaande ruimtes. Zij maakte tape tekeningen vanaf 2002 die o.a. in het Chinese european Art Centre in Xiamen op een solotentoonstelling te zien waren. Andere solo-exposities had solleveld bij het pickled Art Centre in Beijng en Motive gallery in Amsterdam. daarnaast nam ze sinds haar afstuderen aan de rijksakademie in 2003 deel aan een groot aantal groepstentoonstellingen. tijdens het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam is werk van Aam solleveld tevens te zien in de tentoonstelling M for M in het sMAK, gent en bij de ‘uitzicht’ tentoonstelling van ArtWalk, in de staatsliedenbuurt van Amsterdam.

de twee voormalige dienstwoningen in de tolhuistuin in Amsterdam noord fungeren momenteel als tijdelijke werkomgeving van young designers & industry, Amsterdam Creativity exchange (ACX) en Villa Bredero. deze werkplek is onlangs omgedoopt tot het ‘reservaat’. het draait hier altijd om de werking van creativiteit in maatschappijbrede projecten die gaan over de vormgeving van onze wereld. de samenhang tussen de verschillende activiteiten is het uitgangspunt van alles wat er in de werkperiode in het pand zal gebeuren. ook de werking van kunst is geïntegreerd en inclusief.

in het lloyd hotel is verder de tentoonstelling Lloyd History te bezoeken, over de geschiedenis van het hotel, vanaf de bouw in 1926.

Kunstenaar Toine Klaassen is uitgenodigd om voor de duur van de werkperiode (ongeveer één jaar) een werkbaar kunstwerk te maken dat als interieur functioneert. Als een ware indiaan gebruikt hij daarvoor natuurlijke restmaterialen uit de stad. het maken van dit kunstwerk is een continu proces; kunst en werken vallen in het reservaat samen. de bezoekers van het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam krijgen in het reservaat een uur ‘kunstwerken’ aangeboden en kunnen hier 5x24=120 uur terecht. Klaassen zal deze dagen voortdurend aanwezig zijn samen met de medewerkers van young designers & industry – er wordt namelijk gewoon doorgewerkt. Toine Klaasssen en directeur Peik Suyling zullen de bezoekers uitnodigen een kleine aktie te ontketenen om het reservaat ‘live’ mee te maken en de indiaan in zichzelf te ontdekken.

Isabelle Graw will demonstrate how the art market is becoming increasingly powerful when it comes to our defining the value of art since the 1980s. economic criteria are replacing artistic ones. What are the consequences for art under these circumstances? graw will describe these new conditions in order to conceptualise them. When dealing with works of art, we have to keep in mind their specificity. they are always two things at the same time: commodity And symbolic goods. once on the market, they have a price. But they cannot be reduced to their economic value. this tension explains why art does not obey the laws of neoclassical economy. While postulating that the market is not exterior to artistic production, graw nevertheless won’t subscribe to the market’s value system. she insists that the value of a work of art is not to be confused with it’s auction price.

Foam presenteert een overzicht uit het oeuvre van de fotograaf James Nachtwey. de Amerikaanse fotograaf James nachtwey (1948, new york), één van de invloedrijkste fotojournalisten van deze tijd, fotografeert al meer dan 20 jaar crisisgebieden over de hele wereld, waaronder rwanda, Afghanistan, Bosnië, somalië, het Midden-oosten en irak. in onze overweldigende beeldcultuur weten de foto’s van nachtwey de aandacht te grijpen en vast te houden. het portret van de rwandeese jongen wiens gezicht bewerkt is met een machete, of de Afghaanse vrouw in burka, knielend voor het graf voor haar vermoorde broer zijn beelden die in ons collectieve geheugen gegrift staan.

Foam presenteert in samenwerking met de op Art Amsterdam vertegenwoordigde duitse galerie Conrads werk van de jonge fotograaf Sascha Weidner in het Foam_café. Weidner (1976, osnabrück) studeerde in 2004 af aan de Braunschweig university of Art. in zijn werk zoekt hij naar de schoonheid in alledaagse dingen. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn de laatste twee fotoseries die hij maakte: All that could have been over de bezigheden van hedendaagse jongeren en Beauty remains over voorwerpen uit het dagelijks leven. de laatste serie bevat onder andere beelden van een tunnel, een vuilniszak in een zwembad en een hempje. op het eerste gezicht doodnormale zaken. toch blijkt, bij nader inzien, dat er meer aan de hand is in deze foto’s: Wat is dat voor vlek op dat hempje? en waar komt dat felle licht dat door de tunnel schijnt vandaan? Weidner weet een intrigerende spanning in zijn foto’s te creëren.

MAINTAINED GROUND AWOiskA VAN deR mOleN Awoiska van der Molen (1972) wordt aangetrokken door plekken die onverstoorbaar op zichzelf staan, los van de zich almaar ontwikkelende buitenwereld. Van der Molen fotografeert in en rondom steden waar levendigheid afwezig is, steden die onbehagelijk aanvoelen. hiermee laat ze een wereld zien die een ongemakkelijke sfeer uitdraagt en een theatrale spanning met zich mee brengt. Van der Molen studeerde in 2003 af aan de post graduate st.Joost, in Breda. Awoiska van der Molen opent haar tentoonstelling in Foam op donderdag 10 mei. tijdelijk Museum bezoekers zijn welkom vanaf 17.30 uur.

SChOOL RAimONd WOudA Raimond Wouda (1964) fotografeerde gedurende enkele jaren op uiteenlopende middelbare scholen in nederland. Wouda is van mening dat de maatschappelijke discussie over het functioneren van middelbare scholen aan veel leerlingen voorbij gaat. Voor hen is de middelbare school een relatief veilige plek waar ze vrienden of vriendinnen ontmoeten en hun eigen identiteit ontdekken. daarnaast is school de plek waar diverse aspecten van jongerencultuur volop zichtbaar zijn. dit komt het best tot uiting tijdens pauzes en andere activiteiten die buiten de lestijd plaatsvinden. Wouda fotografeerde deze momenten vanaf een hoog standpunt zodat de beschouwer een overzicht krijgt van zowel de individuele leerling als de dynamiek die binnen de groep leerlingen bestaat. het resultaat kan gezien worden als een serie moderne schuttersstukken waarin diverse aspecten van de jongerencultuur zichtbaar zijn en zodoende een staalkaart is van jong nederland.

INTERSECTIONS dAVid GOldBlAtt intersections, kruispunten, is de term die de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotograaf David Goldblatt gebruikt voor de tegenkrachten van waarden, ideeën, standpunten, plaatsen en mensen die de Zuid-Afrikaanse maatschappij vormen. goldblatt (1930, randfontein) is de éminence grise van de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotografie en bekend geworden om zijn subtiele en scherpe blik op de Zuid-Afrikaanse samenleving. Aan de tentoonstelling zijn ook enkele van goldblatts meest recente werken toegevoegd, waarmee een nieuw accent op de meest actuele en urgente problematiek in Zuid-Afrika wordt gelegd: hiV en Aids. Met de tentoonstelling Intersections presenteert huis Marseille voor het eerst een groot overzicht van goldblatts nieuwe kleurenfotografie in nederland. de tentoonstelling loopt nog tot en met 27 mei 2007.

ART AMSTERDAM Art Amsterdam 2007 is het kloppend hart van het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam en daarnaast meer dan ooit een afspiegeling van de internationale kunstwereld. BERLIN – AMSTERDAM RijksAkAdemie elk jaar maakt Art Amsterdam ruimte voor een verrassende tentoonstelling, centraal op de beursvloer. dit jaar is de eer aan de rijksakademie, die onder de titel Berlin Amsterdam werk laat zien van ex-deelnemers die op dit moment werkzaam zijn in Berlijn, waaronder Tjebbe Beekman, Mathilde ter Heijne, Alexandra Leykauf, Mathilde Rosier, Bojan Sarcevic en Marike Schuurman. de presentatie bestaat uit schilderijen, tekeningen, installaties, video en fotografie, gekozen door de duitse topverzamelaar Erika Hoffmann uit Berlijn.

DAGELIJKS GRATIS RONDLEIDINGEN om een goed beeld te krijgen van het gevarieerde aanbod op Art Amsterdam is een rondleiding uitermate geschikt. de Mondriaan stichting biedt in haar Kunstkoop-stand gratis rondleidingen over de beurs aan. iedere bezoeker kan zich dagelijks om 12.00, 14.00 en 16.00 uur aanmelden voor zo’n rondleiding van een deskundige, die in ongeveer een uur uiteenlopende hoogtepunten van de beurs belicht.

OFFSPRING 2007 de Ateliers is een onafhankelijk kunstenaarsinstituut, dat geleid wordt door beeldend kunstenaars. het richt zich op de artistieke vorming van jonge, getalenteerde kunstenaars uit binnen- en buitenland. het monumentale gebouw in het centrum van Amsterdam voorziet in 23 ruime ateliers. Zij staan ter beschikking aan aankomende kunstenaars die intensieve zelfwerkzaamheid willen combineren met kritische begeleiding. Offspring 2007 bestaat dit jaar uit elf solotentoonstellingen van jonge kunstenaars die in mei 2007 hun tweejarige werkperiode aan de Ateliers afsluiten. de deelnemers zijn Adam Avikainen, Dineo Bopape, Nathan Dilworth, Paul Haworth, Simon Hemmer, Zilvinas Landzbergas, Erica van Loon, Jonathan Plante, Jani Ruscica, Robin Vanbesien en Sebastiaan Verhees. de tentoonstelling omvat schilderijen, sculpturen, foto’s, installaties en videowerken. Curator dit jaar is Maxine Kopsa, gastbegeleider aan de Ateliers. Bij de expositie verschijnt een publicatie met teksten van Dominic van den Boogerd, Maxine Kopsa en Tom Morton.

Pass Travel (Con)Temporary Museum Amsterdam sKor frequently organises excursions that show people works of art in the public space throughout the netherlands, an initiative that goes by the name of pass travels. the content of the excursion depends on the theme that is set. themes were for instance: art and death, interaction and the new media, light art, social commitment and urban development, and art and landscape. For the (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam, a pass travel entitles What’s going on? shows visitors extraordinary works of art of recent dates that were realised in the public space of Amsterdam, such as a work by Rob Johannesma at the Bibliotheek Bijzondere Collecties of the uVA and the blue house on iJburg by Jeanne van Heeswijk. All these relate to the animation series The 7 Lights that Chan has worked on since 2005 and that will eventually consist of seven projections. the exhibition at the stedelijk Museum is Chan’s first major museal presentation in europe and for the first time brings together all completed ‘lights’ so far. in these works oppositions meet and clash: upward and downward movements, interior and exterior, slow and fast, light and dark, chaos and order, utopia and apocalypse, the sacred and the irreligious. in his cycle Chan abundantly refers to Christianity and religion in general. structurally, The 7 Lights reverses the theory of rapture: the commodities that symbolize our consumer’s thrift go to heaven and mankind literally falls into disgrace. More and more people are willing to invest in art; what are the consequences of this for fine art? german art critic and publisher Isabelle Graw kicks off on the 8th of May as she presents Money matters. on thursday the10th of May in collaboration with Kunsten ’92 the focal point of the debate will be the impact of private money. Allerlei tegenstellingen botsen met elkaar: bewegingen naar boven en naar beneden, binnen-buiten, langzaam-snel, licht-donker, chaos-orde, utopia en apocalyps, het heilige en het goddeloze. Chan verwijst in de cyclus uitvoerig naar het christendom en religie in het algemeen. de structuur van The 7 Lights is op te vatten als een omkering van de theorie van de rapture (het wegvoeren): de symbolen van de consumptiemaatschappij stijgen op naar de hemel en de mens valt letterlijk in ongenade. OFFSPRING 2007 de Ateliers is an independent art institute run by fine artists. it is concerned with the artistic training of young, talented artists from home and abroad. the monumental building at the heart of Amsterdam accommodates 23 spacious studios. they are the working spaces of up-and-coming artists that combine intensive independent practice and critical supervision. Centraal staat de manier waarop kunstenaars hun blik werpen op de stad. de nadruk ligt daarbij op de stad als sociale gemeenschap, op handelingen, poses en stadse rituelen. hoe ervaren wij de straat? hoe gedragen wij ons? hoe bewegen wij ons door de stad? de tentoonstelling bestaat uit een combinatie van werken uit de collectie van het stedelijk Museum en internationale bruiklenen, met een accent op fotografie, videokunst en ruimtelijke installaties.

20.30 − 22.00 de BAlie KAN KUNST DE MARKT TILLEN? Debat over de representatie van publiek en privaat geld voor de kunst i.s.m. Kunsten’92. Met Ann Demeester (de Appel), Laetitia de Leede (triodosbank), Ryclef Rienstra (Vandenende Foundation), Renee Steenbergen (o.a. nrC handelsblad) en Philip Tijsma (auteur Amerikaanse toestanden uit de bundel Bedrijvige musea), en anderen. Kunsten ’92 organiseert samen met het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam een debat over de invloed van privaat versus publiek geld voor de autonomie, kwetsbaarheid en positie van de beeldende kunstinstellingen en kunstenaars. Veilinghuizen breken financiële records. Bedrijven en kunstinstellingen zoeken naarstig naar manieren om effectief en zorgvuldig om te gaan met sponsorcontracten. Zelden ging er zoveel privaat geld richting cultuur. enerzijds een bijzondere ontwikkeling, maar wat is de keerzijde? Want hoewel er een groeiend budget privaat geld lijkt uit te gaan naar de kunst, zijn het zelden de kunstenaars en de onafhankelijke kunstinstellingen die daarvan profijt hebben. hoe kan er op zorgvuldige wijze omgegaan worden met privaat geld en welk belang heeft het publieke geld voor de representatie van de beeldende kunst instituten? Met deze thema’s raakt de avond aan de bredere vraag over de representatie van kunst en cultuur in nederland.

17.30 FoAM OPENING ‘MAINTAINED GROUND’ Awoiska van der Molen Awoiska Van der Molen (1972) wordt aangetrokken door plekken die onverstoorbaar op zichzelf staan, los van de zich almaar ontwikkelende buitenwereld. As part of the (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam, Foam presents, in collaboration with the german gallery Conrads, work by young photographer Sascha Weidner. this collaboration perfectly fits into Foam’s exhibition programme that draws attention to work by young photographers. Weidner (1976, osnabrück) graduated in 2004 at the Braunschweig university of Art. his work captures the beauty of everyday things, as his two latest series show: All that could have been pictures activities by youngsters of today and Beauty remains shows ordinary objects such as a tunnel, a dustbin in a swimming pool and a vest. When you take a closer look, there is more to these pictures than meets the eye. What caused the patch on the vest? What is that blinding light at the end of the tunnel? Weidner’s photographs exude an intriguing atmosphere of tension.

Foam presents an overview of the oeuvre of American photographer James Nachtwey. nachtwey (1948, new york) is one of the present-day most prominent photojournalists. For more than twenty years he has been photographing hot spots across the world: rwanda, Afghanistan, Bosnia, somalia, the Middle east and iraq. in an era in which images are overpoweringly present, nachtwey’s photographs hold our attention. the portrait of a rwandan boy whose face is gashed by a machete, an Afghan woman in burka who kneels at the grave of her slain brother – they are images that are indelibly printed in our memories.

MAINTAINED GROUND AWOiskA VAN deR mOleN Awoiska van der Molen (1972) is intrigued by places that seem undisturbed by their changing surroundings. Van der Molen takes pictures in and in the vicinities of cities that lack liveliness and generate an uncomfortable feeling. the world she depicts has an uneasy atmosphere and a theatrical state of controlled hostility. Van der Molen graduated in 2003 at the post graduate st. Joost in Breda. she had shows at the geM, the hague, at resy Muijsers temporary Art, tilburg and at the natuurmuseum (Wildlife Museum), groningen. Awoiska van der Molen will be present at the opening of her show on thursday the 10th of May at 17.30 hrs.

SChOOL RAimONd WOudA For some years now Raimong Wouda (1964) has taken photographs at dutch secondary schools of varying kinds. Wouda is of the opinion that pupils are oblivious to the social debate about how schools should function. pupils consider their school a relatively safe haven where they meet friends and discover themselves and build on their personalities. in addition, at school diverse aspects of the culture of youngsters, their behavioural codes and forms of expression are conspicuously highlighted, especially during breaks and after hours activities. DAvID GOLDBLATT iNteRseCtiONs intersections, crossroads, is the term that south-African photographer David Goldblatt uses to refer to the crosscurrents of values, ideas, places and people that make up south-African society. goldblatt (1930, randfontein) is the éminence grise of south-African photography and is known for his subtle and sharp view of his society. the exhibition contains some of goldblatt’s more recent works that put emphasis on topical and urgent issues such as hiV and Aids. Intersections at huis Marseille is the first special exhibition of goldblatt’s colour photography in the netherlands. the exhibition is on until the 27th of May (inclusive).

Wat is het effect hiervan op kunst? graw beschrijft de nieuwe omstandigheden, om ze op die manier te conceptualiseren. Kunstwerken zijn eigenlijk twee dingen in één: een handelsartikel en een object met symbolisch waarde. Als ze te koop zijn, hebben ze een prijskaartje. toch kunnen ze niet gereduceerd worden tot hun economische waarde. dit verklaart meteen waarom kunst niet naar de pijpen van de neoklassieke economie danst. de kunstmarkt staat niet helemaal buiten artistieke productie, maar graw wil niet meegaan in het waardensysteem van de markt. de waarde van een kunstwerk en het prijskaartje dat eraan hangt zijn twee totaal verschillende dingen.

TAPE DRAWING LLOyD 2007 AAm sOlleVeld the Culturele Ambassade (Cultural embassy) commissioned artist Aam Solleveld to make the monumental and temporary installation Tape Drawing in the restaurant of the lloyd hotel. As a result, up until the 13th of May the lloyd hotel is turned into a less than permanent museum room in the umbrella event that is the (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam. Aam solleveld’s artwork consists of drawings made by graphite pencil or tape that query the psychology that interiors reflect. the interiors are varied: settings, studios, meeting rooms, even a landing stage. they all add an extra dimension to existing spaces. Aam solleveld has been making tape drawings since 2002 that were shown in a solo show at the Chinese european Art Centre in Xiamen amongst other places. she also had solo shows at the pickled Art Centre in Beijing and the Motive gallery in Amsterdam. since she graduated at the rijksacademie in 2003 she has participated in many group exhibitions. during the period that the (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam is on, work by Aam solleveld is also shown at the M for M exhibition at the sMAK museum in ghent and at the ‘uitzicht’ (‘View’) exhibition organized by ArtWalk in the staatslieden district in Amsterdam.

the two former official houses at the tolhuistuin in Amsterdam noord are currently the temporary working places of young designers & industry, Amsterdam Creativity exchange (ACX) and Villa Bredero. this space has recently been rebaptised reservaat. Focal matters have always been the workings of creativity in social projects that concern the design of our surroundings. point of departure at these premises is the correlation between the varied activities that take place. the approach is integrated and inclusive.

Artist Toine Klaassen has been invited to make, in a working period that spans about a year, a workable artwork that functions as an interior. As a genuine native indian he uses natural waste material that he finds in the city. this artwork is a continuous process; at the reservaat, work and works of art coincide. Visitors of the (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam are confronted with ‘artworks’ or ‘art that works’ at the reservaat and can enter 24 hours a day for 5 days on end, which gives the sum total of 120 hours. Klaassen will be present during the event as will be his fellow workers of young designers & industry. they will be at work. Toine Klaassen and director Peik Suyling will invite the visitors to set up an action to ‘live’ the reservaat to the fullest and give free reign to their native indian nature.

Kunsten ’92 organiseert samen met het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam een debat over de invloed van privaat versus publiek geld voor de autonomie, kwetsbaarheid en positie van de beeldende kunstinstellingen en kunstenaars. Veilinghuizen breken financiële records. Bedrijven en kunstinstellingen zoeken naarstig naar manieren om effectief en zorgvuldig om te gaan met sponsorcontracten. Zelden ging er zoveel privaat geld richting cultuur. enerzijds een bijzondere ontwikkeling, maar wat is de keerzijde? Want hoewel er een groeiend budget privaat geld lijkt uit te gaan naar de kunst, zijn het zelden de kunstenaars en de onafhankelijke kunstinstellingen die daarvan profijt hebben. hoe kan er op zorgvuldige wijze omgegaan worden met privaat geld en welk belang heeft het publieke geld voor de representatie van de beeldende kunst instituten? Met deze thema’s raakt de avond aan de bredere vraag over de representatie van kunst en cultuur in nederland. Erik Hitters (erasmus universiteit) zal de debatten modereren. Met Ann Demeester (de Appel), Laetitia de Leede (triodosbank), Ryclef Rienstra (Vandenende Foundation), Renee Steenbergen (o.a. nrC handelsblad) en Philip Tijsma (auteur Amerikaanse toestanden uit de bundel Bedrijvige musea), en anderen.

op uitnodiging van het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam organiseert stichting Kunst en openbare ruimte (sKor) de jaarlijkse sKor-lezing, met dit maal als onderwerp de relatie tussen kunstopdrachten en de markt. hoe verhoudt kunst in de openbare ruimte zich tot de (kunst)markt? Wat betekenen de vermarkting en privatisering van de openbare ruimte voor kunstopdrachten? TEMPORARy CAFé

‘snapshot (in time)’ is part of the umbrella event (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam 2007 and puts emphasis on the transience of the artworks. the video and sound installations accentuate the temporary and the ephemeral, but refer to ongoing ideas and dreams. Guadeloupe (2003) is a sound installation by the scottish artist Susan Philipsz. the installation renders sounds from a busy public space, a man sings I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry and a woman’s voice asks information on the bus that runs to guadalupe. through this sound installation the empty corridor it is accommodated in is transformed into a texan bus and coach station that has an enchanting atmosphere. it appeals to the desire that many of us foster to travel to unknown exotic-sounding places. the tragicomic song reminds of longings and itches to flee. the piece refers to the fact that we seek a place that will never be found. philipsz’ work is simple and overwhelmingly intense. her installation Songs Sung in the First Person on Themes of Release, Sympathy and Longing perfectly shows this: four popular songs by gram parsons, soft Cell, teenage Fanclub and the smiths were performed unaccompanied and recorded. Artist and fellow scotsman Ross Birrell is widely known through his conceptual performances that he records on video. The Interpretation of Dream (2001), Brave New World (2001) and The Destiny of the World (2001) are recordings of given moments in time that last less than a minute. they capture places and objects that symbolize ideologies and utopia’s of historical value. Birrell argues that the ‘grand stories in history will no longer hold and are in a state of crisis. in his work Birrell intends to bring them to the notice.

Furthermore, a temporary and idiosyncratic café dishes up black-and-white snacks.

DARK MIRROR the free group exhibition ‘dark Mirror’ coincides ‘snapshot (in time)’. the exhibition explores man’s social conditioning and compares it to animal instinct. internationally renowned artists show the borderline between the rational human being and the animal creature. the twilight zone where emotions and instincts reign and social conditioning is momentarily peripheral. the participating artists all react to their environments in very self-willed ways and highlight social codes, nature and the animal in their works. Works are shown by Carlos Amorales, Emmanuelle Antille, Marcus Coates, Mike Stubbs, Mark Wallinger, and works from collections of Rick Buckley, Charlemagne Palestine, Jeremy Drummond, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Sterling Ruby, Joanna Rytel and Servaas.

WhAT’S GOING ON? PAss tRAVels sKor frequently organises excursions that show people artworks in the public space throughout the netherlands, an initiative that goes by the name of pass travels. the content of the excursion depends on the theme that is set. themes were for instance: art and death, interaction and the new media, light art, social commitment and urban development, and art and landscape. on the occasion of (Con)temporary Museum Amsterdam a pass travel entitles What’s going on? shows visitors extraordinary artworks of recent dates that were realised in the public space of Amsterdam, such as a work by Rob Johannesma at the Bibliotheek Bijzondere Collecties of the uVA and the Blue House by Jeanne van Heeswijk. KUNST EN DE MARKT De kunstmarkt bloeit. De vraag overtreft het aanbod en verkoopprijzen knallen omhoog. Veilinghuizen breken met de regelmaat van de klok records, trekken een steeds groter (en vermogender) publiek aan en de hoeveelheid kunstbeurzen groeit jaarlijks. Verzamelaars wereldwijd wordt een warm welkom geheten met reisjes, exclusieve hotel-overnachtingen, funky feestjes en privé ontmoetingen met kunstenaars. Beurzen zijn dé exclusieve reisbestemmingen aan het worden waar men zich informeel kan mengen met de internationale jetset. Zelfs modebladen schrijven recencies en melden in hun roddelrubrieken wie waar gesignaleerd is en welke kunst werd aangeschaft. Is er sprake van een nieuw waardesysteem of andere kunst? Ontwikkelingen die om kritische reflectie vragen. Tijdens Art Amsterdam organiseert het Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam debatten en lezingen in de Balie over de kwetsbare verhouding tussen kunst en de markt. Wat voor gevolgen heeft de groeiende interesse van investeerders voor de beeldende kunst zelf? Wie behoedt haar gevoelige positie? Is verzamelen een lifestyle voor de rijken aan het worden? during the closing weekend of temporary Museum Amsterdam, on 12 and 13 May, sMArt project space will host Open House, offering guided tours of both the exhibition and the artists’ studios in the main building. Among others, Tim Braden, Job Koelewijn, Amalia Pica, Daniel Roth and Esther Tielemans are currently in residence. sMArt project space is now permanently housed in the building that formerly accommodated the pathological Anatomical laboratories of the Wilhelmina hospital in Amsterdam’s old West. Breathing new life into the area and the monumental building, sMArt project space is in the process of converting the interior to accommodate exhibition spaces of 700 m2, three cinema theatres, a lecture and performance hall, ten studios for the residency programme, a cafe and restaurant and members club. open house offers visitors a last opportunity to see the building partially in its former state as it is under renovation, including areas that are usually not accessible to the public.

EvERy WIND ThAT BLOWS the very extremity of our late 20th century thinking puts much of our cultural heritage to an acute test. only the deprived still know that the documents of civilisation have been written in blood and tears. Although the blood and tears seem very remote to most of us, they are nevertheless very real. this intellectual predisposition co-exists with a host of wounded spots on the face of the earth; the inclination is not only to credit human nature with much constructive potential but to credit anything positive in the work of art. the exhibition Every Wind That Blows recognises that if life is to flourish, change has to take place and new potential should be released. the exhibition includes work by Esra Ersen, Ahmet Ögüt, et al.

ThE RISE NiNA FisCHeR &&& mAROAN el sANi At the stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam the film installation The Rise is on view, a work that Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani realised during their five-month period of residency at the Zuidas (south Axis) in Amsterdam. the Zuidas is an economical centre and part of a sweeping urban development. its geographical situation is excellent; access to the high-speed railroad network and the airport is swift and easy. ThE CONTENTED hEART

the subject matter of the group exhibition Mapping the City is the relationship between artists and the city from about 1960 onwards until the present day. More specifically, it focuses on the ways in which artists turn their gaze towards the city. As such, the city as social community, actions, attitudes, and urban rituals are accentuated. how do we live in the city? What is our behaviour in an urban environment? how do we travel? the exhibition comprises artworks from the collection of the stedelijk Museum as well as works borrowed from collections abroad. the works are predominantly photographs, video art and spatial installations. Video installations are by leading contemporary artists such as Doug Aitken, Sarah Morris and Francis Alys. photo work is by prominent photographers Ed van der Elsken, William Klein and Jeff Wall. starting point of the Mapping the City exhibition is the era of the late 1950s when debord published theory of Wandering (1958) and the well-known series This Way Brouwn by Stanley Brouwn. in 1962 Brouwn took to the street and asked random passers-by in Amsterdam to indicate the route from point A to point B. each route that the passer-by traced out was given the title This Way Brouwn.

W139 sets up an exhibition of paintings and drawings selected by artist Sarah Verbeek. the chosen painters seem to have an uncomplicated relationship with the medium. they love painting and practicing it. they are not exactly fundamentalist who need to feel a fuddle, an intoxication to be productive. they are no fetichists of slowness. they have no need to turn to photography. their works do not comment on things or feel the need to justify. the work is not laborious of forced; neither is it formless. it depicts human beings, trees, triangles. the layers of paint are thin and the gestures are quiet. When you look carefully, the paintings convey the feeling that art is a natural self-evident need. it is good to bear that in mind.

LIGhTS AND DRAWINGS PAul CHAN the exhibition set up by Paul Chan (1973, hong Kong) is all about the concepts of light and shadow in a literal as well as figurative way. six museum halls display large-scale projections, charcoal drawings, collages and digital studies. All these relate to the animation series The 7 Lights that Chan has worked on since 2005 and that will eventually consist of seven projections. the exhibition at the stedelijk Museum is Chan’s first major museal presentation in europe and for the first time brings together all completed ‘lights’ so far. in these works oppositions meet and clash: upward and downward movements, interior and exterior, slow and fast, light and dark, chaos and order, utopia and apocalypse, the sacred and the irreligious. in his cycle Chan abundantly refers to Christianity and religion in general. structurally, The 7 Lights reverses the theory of rapture: the commodities that symbolize our consumer’s thrift go to heaven and mankind literally falls into disgrace. Chan thus refers to topical global issues such as the conflict and wavering between capitalism and idealism.

TIjDElIjk mUSEUm AmSTERDAm tijd VOOR tijdelijkHeid Het Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam is een korte maar krachtige symbiose van vooraanstaande kunstinstellingen in Amsterdam. Na een succesvolle editie in 2006 vormt ook dit jaar de stad de plattegrond van het museum, met als museumzalen: De Ateliers, De Balie, Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, Huis Marseille, Lloyd Hotel & Culturele Ambassade, Nederlands Instituut voor mediakunst Montevideo/TBA, Reservaat, SKOR – De Inkijk, SMART Project Space, Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum CS en W139. Art Amsterdam is het kloppend hart waar iedere bezoeker een gratis passe-partout krijgt dat toegang verleent tot alle ‘zalen’ van het Tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam. Ieder afzonderlijk instituut heeft een programma gerealiseerd met werk van kunstenaars uit de stal van een galerie op Art Amsterdam, vluchtige installaties, rondleidingen of videoprogramma’s. In De Balie vinden dagelijks debatten plaats over de actuele ontwikkelingen in de kunst(markt).

TIJDELIJKE KUNST in dit perspectief biedt tijdelijkheid andere, soms verhelderende, perspectieven. in het nederlands instituut voor Mediakunst Montevideo/tBA vindt een presentatie plaats waarbij het tijdelijke karakter van een aantal werken centraal staat. er worden video- en geluidsinstallaties getoond waarbij het kortstondige en efemere onderwerp is, maar waarbij tevens gerefereerd wordt aan voortlevende wensen of ideeën. het lloyd hotel toont in het restaurant de vluchtige installatie Tape Drawing van Aam Solleveld. het reservaat is een tijdelijke werkomgeving van verschillende organisaties binnen het domein van design. Voor de duur van hun werkperiode is kunstenaar Toine Klaassen uitgenodigd om een ‘werkbaar kunstwerk’ te maken dat functioneel is als interieur. Klaassen en directeur Peik Suyling (reservaat) zullen de bezoekers van het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam uitnodigen een kleine actie te ontketenen om het reservaat live mee te maken.

om het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam optimaal te kunnen ervaren heeft Audi als bijzondere actie een vijftal spiksplinternieuwe auto’s met chauffeurs ter beschikking gesteld. deze Audi’s A6 en A8 zullen dagelijks van de rAi naar de stad rijden en vice versa. Bezoekers kunnen hier gebruik van maken met bonnen in het passe-partout. op verschillende locaties zal er een tijdelijk Museum Menu geserveerd worden. Bij de entrees voorzien tijdelijke Museumgidsen de bezoekers op verleidelijke wijze van alle informatie. het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam is een interpretatie van de stad als een imaginaire architectuur zonder muren, vol verbindingen en betekenis. en daarmee ruimte om te verdwalen. Komt u vooral binnen!

KUNST EN DE MARKT in de Balie vinden debatten plaats over de verhouding tussen kunst en de markt. er is een groeiende interesse van investeerders in kunst; wat betekent dat voor de beeldende kunst? de duitse kunstcriticus en uitgeefster Isabelle Graw geeft op 8 mei de aftrap met haar lezing Money matters. op 10 mei zal in samenwerking met Kunsten ’92 de invloed van privaat geld aan de orde worden gesteld. Ann Demeester (de Appel), Erik Hitters (erasmus universiteit), Renee Steenbergen (nrC) en anderen zullen aan de hand van korte statements met elkaar in discussie gaan. de serie wordt 11 mei afgesloten met de sKor-lezing door cultureel econoom Arjo Klamer. elke avond wordt ingeleid met een voorprogramma dat samengesteld is door de internationale curatoren van Close Connections.

STAD ALS MUSEUM het stedelijk Museum organiseert rondleidingen door de tentoonstelling Mapping the city, een expositie die de relatie tussen kunstenaars en de stad belicht. de nadruk ligt daarbij op de stad als sociale gemeenschap, op handelingen, poses en stadse rituelen. Foam toont werk van Awoiska van der Molen die fotografeert in en rondom steden waar de levendigheid juist afwezig is, steden die onbehaaglijk aanvoelen. in het sMBA is de filminstallatie The Rise te zien, die Nina Fischer en Maraon el Sani realiseerden tijdens een verblijf in, en als reactie op, de Amsterdamse Zuidas.

dit jaar is nadrukkelijk samenwerking tot stand gekomen tussen de galeries op Art Amsterdam en de instellingen in het tijdelijk Museum Amsterdam. Zo presenteert fotografiemuseum Foam in samenwerking met de duitse galerie Conrads werk van de jonge fotograaf Sacha Weidner. sMArt project space toont in het intieme, dag en nacht geopende, Coded Cinema een film- en videoprogramma met internationale hedendaagse kunstenaars die gepresenteerd worden door galeries die deelnemen aan Art Amsterdam.
