"I vowed not to become a statistic" Facing her Fears, Tears, Hurt, Pain and Perception

PUBLISHER'S NOTE We are in the heat of the summer, its back-to-school time for many; summer vacations are over. Everyone is getting ready to enjoy the beautiful Fall season.

National statistics vary, finding between 60 and 70 percent of high school girls that become pregnant will drop out and less likely to complete high school. The attitude about teenage mothers for most is “you will never graduate if you keep this baby;" it’s more of a get rid of it attitude. This edition of The Cover magazine takes you inside The Tina Latrice Taylor Ivie story; she defied the odds of not becoming a statistic, breaking a generational cycle of a life old adage for naysayers.

In the United States each year approximately 1 out of every 10 young women between the ages of 15 and 19 becomes pregnant, a ratio that has changed little since 1973. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, in 1985 16.6 of every 1,000 girls aged 14 and younger and 109.8 of every 1,000 teenagers between ages 15 and 19 became pregnant. August is National Black Business Month. In this edition we are also celebrating and supporting some of the best restaurants and caterers in the food industry.

The Cover magazine will provide you with its compelling content of beauty, fashions, entertainment, real life issues, healthy lifestyles, celebrity news, rising stars and dreamers. The Cover magazine has also been produced to market and promote business owners; especially women own businesses. It is our sincere hope that you are inspired and motivated to become one of our advertisers, subscribers, fans, supporters or contributors who enjoy reading and dreaming of dreams that can be made a reality. HOT! HOT! HOT! When Being Hot is Dangerous When the weather is hot, there are steps you can take to help your body stay cooler and prevent serious heat-related illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids, primarily water. Avoid the caffeine and sugar of too many sports drinks and colas. Alcohol may cause dehydration. When you work or play in the heat, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Wear water-resistant sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Reapply every two hours or sooner when you swim or sweat. Wear loose lightweight clothing. Dark or bright colors provide more SPF protection than light colors. Wear UV-protection sunglasses and a dark wide-brimmed hat to prevent sun damage to your eyes. Use caution touching surfaces in parked vehicles. Steering wheels, seat belt buckles and child seats can become very hot. Use garden gloves or oven mitts to touch hot surfaces. Do not leave people or pets in parked vehicles. On an 80-degree day, the inside temperature can reach 100 degrees within 10 minutes. In extreme heat, wear shoes and prevent falls on hot pavements and sidewalks to prevent serious burns. Do not pick up rocks or other objects without hand protection. For your outside pets, provide cool water and a shady area. Consider alternative inside arrangements in extreme heat. Pets can suffer from heat-related illness, just like people. Provide foot covers for pets to prevent paw burns from hot sidewalks and pavement.

Heat-related illnesses can range from uncomfortable to life-threatening. To learn the symptoms and what to do for rash, sunburn, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, print your own copy of the CDC easy-to-read chart at this website. https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/pdf/Heat_Related_Illness.pdf This article is not intended as medical advice. THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME This world is not our home. “My grandmother Madea would often say, “We’re all gonna leave here one day.” She and Papa, my grandfather, purchased life insurance for everyone that they were responsible for. They also purchased joint grave plots.

“This world is not my home.” Rev. Rufus Smith, Senior Pastor at Hope church preached this sermon on February, 2022. We rejoice when a child is born and cry when our loved ones leave. He explained, there are so many uncertainties when you’re born but when you die, there’s no more sickness and pain. We will be dead a lot longer than we’re alive. March 2022, my 56-year-old healthy cousin went to sleep and never woke up. This sermon has comforted me & I have shared it many times.

This world is not our home. May 30, 2023, my dad was tired so the Lord came & took him home. Dad wasn’t quite 21 years old when he purchased joint interment spaces and headstones for him and my mom. Mom passed in 1997; dad remarried but always said “Ima be buried next to your momma.” He paid only $398.00 in 1962. Today the plot is $3,407. That’s inflation! This world is not our home. We don’t know the time or place. However, we do know it’s going to happen. We plan for the arrival of a new birth. Yet, many wait until it’s almost too late to plan for their departure. Live with a sense of urgency. Life isn’t promised.

Plan: Dad wanted a grave site ceremony. He didn’t want people getting up and telling lies (smile). I delivered his eulogy. What are your plans? Purchase a “Pre-Need” plan at a funeral home. Just know if you die before paying it off, there may not be enough to handle your wishes. Set aside a lump sum in the bank. Don’t start saving $100 monthly as you don’t know when the good Lord is gonna take you. Only use this method if you have a lump sum that you know you won’t touch.

Purchase Final Expense life insurance. It’s a whole life plan used to cover your burial and funeral expenses. Policies can be paid up in 10 or 20 years, or you can pay until age 90 or 100.

How will you plan for your departure?

TINA LATRICE TAYLOR IVIE Failure was not an option refusing to become a statistic Choosing Freedom over Failure We caught up with Tina Latrice Taylor Ivie, a native of Chicago South Side, rooted in Louisiana, now living in South Mississippi for a cover story. Tina revealed her life story of how she refused to become a statistic as a pregnant teen at the tender age of 16. Tina was faced with her fears and tears; but it was because of her determination and dedication she said “I was not going to become a statistic” in spite of the hurt, pain, challenges and perception she encountered.

The Cover: Tell us about young Tina growing up? As a child I dreamed of having this wonderful executive position overlooking New York city lights in the fashion industry. I didn’t know why, we didn’t have or play fashion show as children growing up in Chicago. We played baseball in the alley, rode our bikes together, played double Dutch, Roly Poly, made mud pies and played on the railroad tracks. You know, the whole hood experience. The Cover: How did having a baby at the age of 16 impact your education and career goals?

At 16 years old living in Tennessee with my mother, yet still gift wrapped and cocooned I became a teenage mother. I did not give up the quest to be better, when my mother allowed me to make the decision whether or not to keep or destroy my baby, I knew I was truly loved and I vowed to my mother that I would not be a statistic, nor would my baby girl. I never labeled myself as a victim, so I was determined NOT to allow others to label me as a statistic. The Cover: What challenges did you face as a teen mother? I continued to face the challenges of life as a young mother, seeking the approval of others, to be accepted as a young mother and a good girl. I prided myself as being that mother. I didn’t want my daughter to feel what I felt as a young mother, the looks or the pushing away of adults. I recall a high school majorette teacher, who stated that I would be a bad influence on the other girls; if I became a member of the team. Suffice it to say, I was a majorette from 10th-12th grades. I made the decision to have this baby and it was my responsibility to take care of her, so it was important to me to instill within her the values and principles of SELF. I continued on my quest to become a better Tina. Having my baby so young didn’t cause my life to be over, it actually made it better.

The Cover: How did becoming a teen mother make your life better? I worked; I didn’t drop out of school, continued high school, graduated, went into the medical field as a Medical Assistant in 1990, still on that quest. I continued my education in the medical field. I was nowhere near a statistic of how people expected me to turn out, I have soared so far above it.

GIFT WRAPPED, YET COCOONED

The Cover: What are your dreams and expectations? I am now an adult with a deeper thrive and on a thirstier quest. I am older and more determined to help other young beauties take hold of their lives and be more determined NOT to be what others want them to be, but what they desire to become. It’s okay and nice to know what others expect of you, but the question is: what do you expect from yourself? Every female beauty must answer this question for herself.

BREAKING THE CYCLE... SHE BEAT THE ODDS

The Cover: Do you think your life would be happier and more prosperous if you had not chosen to live life on your terms, verses what other expected of you?

The answer is yes for me. I remain on the quest of building a better Tina which empowers me, because I can help other female beauties on their quest as well. I started with my own selfdetermination, dropping those seeds within my daughters whose ages are 37 and 30. I taught them how to look at their beauty from the inside out. As a young girl I had to find a way to reveal the inner beauty, the bright lights, and the good girl without allowing the evil criticism to COCOON me even further.

DRIVEN "Fear Brought Me Here"

The Cover: How important is it to you to look good and dress fashionably stylish? The artistry of clothing items I choose to put on does not determine who I am or my worth, but the deeper self-internal flame of determination has to remain lit when others have torn you down. As a female beauty, I keep the flame of my internal self "lit" at all times; although I am GIFT WRAPPED but still somewhat COCOONED.

The Cover: What are some of your hobbies? I love to read, dance, exercise and listen to music while creating my visionary style. Dancing makes me feel free.

The Cover: What are some of your accomplishments in spite of all the naysayers?

My accomplishments are: I completed High School, completed college with multiple degrees, I got married and have stayed married to the same man for the past 32 years. I have two(2) beautiful daughters that successfully completed college. I have a dog, but no white picket fence. The Cover: Tina, how do we sum it all up? I am strong, accomplished and no longer have the fear of NOT pleasing others. Why? Because I am too busy helping THEM. Dreamland Productions has given me something I can’t name at the moment, it is overwhelming… I can say it’s FREEDOM! I came to Dreamland knowing that I was at a place in my life to bless other female beauties. My life experiences have opened up to me what's most important, and that’s INTERNAL FREEDOM. The FREEDOM to express me, my SELF-CONFIDENCE, my SELF-WORTH… “I love being flawed & the decisions I have made; I am comfortable being me.”
