Having not been in the United States for more than a month before we shot with the young photographer. Phillip’s quick whit and energized persona quickly became contagious, so contagious we had the feisty young one shot not 1 but 3 sessions for us this issue – and that’s saying something.

This guy is definitely a more than meets the eye case – if that really means anything. When first reaching out to Evan it was to book his amazing studio The Dream Factory Los Angeles (theDFLA.com) for our cover shoot with the ladies of Danity Kane, after being in the presence of his infectious and welcoming energy – and seeing his amazing work, we embarked on the treacherous journey of shooting some of Annex Man’s best photos for the Bloodbath editorial.

Dallas haupt

A new face for NEXT models Dallas a mere senior in high school has one of the most photographable faces I’ve shoot in quite a while. Mix that undeniable face with a wideeyed innocence boyish charm yet confident and commanding presence and a superstar is born.

josef jasso

Jasso a pretty much vet in the game who I’ve worked with on a few occasions, yet our editorial Scene being the first for Annex Man would most definitely be considered a close friend mainly due to our endless conversations that mostly consist of nothing but GIF’s of feisty women, ala Naomi Campbell and every Real Housewife from Atlanta to space.

Breakfast

at maison martin margiela By: Mi’chelle Daniels

An unconventional, eccentric brand with a recluse man behind the name and a young design team committed to upholding his fashion statement of deconstruction; Maison Martin Margiela is one of the most influential and groundbreaking fashion innovators to date. It was founded by the mysterious Martin Margiela—a Belgian fashion designer who, in the late 1980’s, gained recognition as part of the widely influential group of avant garde fashion designers called the Antwerp Six, all of whom graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating from the Academy, Margiela worked as a freelance designer for five years until he took the title of assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier and ultimately became part of the Antwerp Six. Along with the Six, Margiela rebelled against fashions norms and carried on the work of designers such as Rei Kawakubo—creator of Comme De Garçons—who jolted fashion with unconventional designs. Margiela debuted his first women’s collection in 1989 (his menswear came 10 years later) and set the brand’s tone design-wise from the start with a focus on deconstruction, adding mixed proportions with frayed hems and seams on the outside of the garments—all techniques that have had a long lasting influence on fashion today. Although it had a vast influence on fashion in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, the brand has only in recent years become widely accepted and acknowledged. This came about when the brand, in 2002, acquired Diesel. While no doubt a lucrative partnership, Martin ended it due to his aggravation with the brand’s “marketing-driven culture.” The brand had, before that time, always been exclusive— sometimes even hard to find—which is something Martin was fond of. Several years after parting ways with the Diesel brand, Martin desired to stop designing and began looking for a successor for the house. His search led to the collaborative design team which runs the house today. After having his offer of Creative Director turned down by both Raf Simons and designer Haider Ackermann, Martin appointed his creative design team. This team, although the nucleus of design, lacked full control of the brand. “He is here but not here,” stated a Margiela stakeholder Renzo Rosso in the International Herald Tribune in October of 2009, while discussing Martin’s “departure” from the brand’s chief position. Since the shift of creative power in 2009, the brand has excelled in holding true to the house’s intention—disassembling and reassembling, murdering and bringing back to life through fashion. Sustaining their unorthodox ways with their infamous all-white offices and staff members bearing uniform lab coats, Maison Martin Margiela have, in recent times, designed various creations that mainstream lovers of fashion have consumed. Most recently, they collaborated with Converse to present all white painted Chuck Taylor All Star and Jack Purcell sneakers. With deconstruction always at the forefront, the entirely hand-painted shoes bear brush strokes to give each pair a distinctive look with paint that intentionally cracks over time, revealing their true color. Along with the sell out of their newest collaborative creation, Margiela has gained recognition in pop culture with mentions in songs from artist such as Jay Z and Kanye West. West has, throughout his current tour, donned custom, exclusively made wardrobes designed by the house, including jewel-encrusted masks. With a name prominent in the fashion world, influences from designers such as Marc Jacobs and the late Alexander McQueen, wardrobes for rappers’ sold out tours, and considerable control over the fashion side of pop culture; Maison Martin Margiela— through deconstruction and death—has gained an ample amount of life.

Bloodshed BIGGIE

TUPAC A

VS.

s two of the most influential hip-hop artist of all time, TuPac and The Notorious B.I.G.—also known as Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls—are famous not only for their music, but also their leading roles in the infamous 1990’s East Coast vs. West Coast hip-hop rivalry and their tothis-day unsolved murders. Both born in New York City in the early 1970’s to struggling black parents, these men never knew they were destined to become enemies and, arguably, two of the best rappers of all time. Contrary to his lyrics and gangsta style of rapping, Tupac Shakur received a chance to leave his birthplace of impoverished Harlem to discover the creative poet within him when his mother lost her job and moved the family to Baltimore, Maryland. In Baltimore, Shakur attended The Baltimore School of the Arts where he studied and excelled in poetry, acting, jazz, and ballet. Known as popular and gifted among his peers, Shakur’s life full of learning and art was cut short at the age of seventeen, when he moved across the county to Marin City, California—just five miles north of San Francisco. In Marin—although in the midst of poverty, drugs, and gang violence— Shakur found a way to use his talents to persevere and become a roadie and back-up dancer for the Oakland, CA hip-hop group Digital Underground. By forming a strong bond with Digital

BY: Mi’chele Daniles

Underground front man Shock G, Tupac Shakur earned the opportunity to be featured on their 1991 record “Same Song.” After this debut as a rapper, Tupac went on to develop his craft as he delved into rapping. Born just a year after Shakur on May 21, 1972, Biggie Smalls’—born Christopher Wallace—upbringing wasn’t much different from Tupac’s in some respects. He, too, was raised by

a single mother in a low-income neighborhood surrounded by drugs and violence. Smalls initially did well in school and used rapping on the streets of New York with his peers as an artistic outlet. Smalls, however, found trouble early in life when he began selling drugs at the age of twelve. His drug-dealing lead to many arrests throughout his young adult life, as well as a several month long stint in jail. Smalls caught a break in 1992,

however, when a young, up-and-coming record producer by the name of Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs heard one of his demo tapes. Combs signed Wallace to his newly-founded record label, Bad Boy Records, and the two began what some call, to this day, “a revival of East Coast hip-hop.”

B

ad Boy Records’ so-called revival of the east coast hip-hop scene via Puff Daddy and Biggie was full-fledged by 1995 with the release of Smalls’ Ready to Die album. That same year, Marion “Suge” Knight took over the throne at Death Row Records, the leader in West Coast hip-hop and home to many popular west coast hop-hip artists of the 1990’s, including Shakur. Smalls and Shakur—two men from the same side of the tracks with equitable talents and dreams—who were once friends, soon became rivals and, ultimately, enemies. The rift began when Tupac was robbed, shot, and left for dead in the lobby of a New York recording studio in November of 1994. Surviving the shooting by an inch, Shakur forged a rivalry; publicly accusing both Smalls and Puffy of facilitating the shooting—a claim which both parties vehemently denied. Along with the denial, Smalls released a track called “Who Shot Ya?”—a diss track that Shakur, along with much of the hip-hop community, saw as a taunt from the rapper.

Therefore, Tupac released a rebuttal record, “Hit ‘Em Up,” in which he not only further accused Smalls of his attempted murder, but claimed to have had an affair with Smalls’ estranged wife, singer Faith Evans. The media played a large roll in the East Coast vs. West Coast hip-hop feud, reporting on it and the two rappers continually. This reporting led to many fans taking sides and escalated the feud between the record companies, rappers, and coasts during the 1995 Source Awards in New York City. Not only did the West Coast, Death Row Records artist who performed get negative reception from the East Coast audience, but Suge Knight took the stage and made derogatory remarks toward Combs. His comments, which many in the audience felt were directed toward the entire coast, got Knight boo’d off the stage. The award show and media coverage of what was dubbed a “coastal rap war” only fanned the flames. The rivalry between coasts, along with Smalls and Shakur, continued as Shakur released numerous tracks antagonizing and threatening not only Smalls, but also Bad Boy. That all ended, however, on September 7, 1996. That evening, Shakur attended the Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After the match Shakur, along with Knight, was involved in a fight in the lobby of the hotel with an alleged member of the Southside Crip Gang. After the fight, the entourage headed in a convoy to the Death Row-owned Club 662. En route to the club, at approximately 11:15 PM, a white Cadillac pulled up to the right side of the vehicle in which Shakur and Knight were riding and opened fire, hitting Shakur four times and merely grazing Knight. Shakur was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died six days later of internal bleeding. Although directly after the shooting one of the cars in Shakur’s convoy went after the assailant, it was to no avail. Immediately after reports of the young rapper’s attack and death, Biggie Smalls denied any involvement in the shooting, going as far as having his family produce invoices which proved that he was in a New York recording studio working at the time. After the untimely death of his rival, Smalls hired twenty-four hour security. He feared for his safety, according to an interview the rapper gave in March of 1997—shortly before his own murder. Smalls traveled to Los Angeles in late February of 1997 in order to promote and film a music video for the lead single of the upcoming Life After Death album. On March 8th, Smalls attended the 1997 Soul Train Music Awards in the city, where he presented an award to one of the recipients.

Although not feeling very welcomed by the west coast after being boo’d by some of the crowd during the award show, Smalls attended the after party, hosted by Vibe magazine, at The Petersen Automotive Museum The party was cut short by the fire department due to overcrowding, so Smalls and his entourage left at 12:30AM. Fifteen minutes later, as Smalls and his entourage waited at a red light just 50 yards outside of the museum, a car pulled up alongside their SUV and opened fire, shooting Smalls four times. After being rushed to the hospital, the rapper was pronounced dead at 1:15AM. To this day, just like Shakur, Smalls murder—over sixteen years later— is still an unsolved mystery. Many theories about both murders have circulated about not only the identity of the murderers, but also their motives. Just as many believe—due to their never-ending rivalry—that Smalls played a part in Shakur’s murder, it is believed that Smalls’ death was carried out in order to avenge Shakur. We may never know the reason behind the deaths of these young, gifted men who reigned as the kings of east and west coast hiphop or who their murderers were, but it is certain is that both of their legacies as two of the most influential and iconic figures in the history of hip-hop lives on.

Characteristics of a Murderer: by: carrie schuler

Most of us are lucky enough to never have encounters with killers; especially serial killers. If you have learned anything from teenage horror movies, it’s that becoming psychologically ruined for life can be as simple as being made fun of for wearing pink cowboy boots to school (true story). Can you imagine the amount of psychological damage a hooded figure can do as each one of your closest friends is picked off one by one? Imagine the effect these deaths could have on you and what color cowboy boots you choose! While we avoid killers if we can, there are things we can do to keep our streak going and prevent getting axed, stabbed, or hurled off a cliff. First, hang out with girls. Boys make up 89 percent of killers and 90 percent of serial killers. Need more help? Stay away from unskilled laborers who have an astounding hatred for their fathers and mothers and have developed a serious tendency towards voyeurism. These men will most likely prefer you not breathing.

Have you had moments when you were compelled to snub someone out on the spot? Or times when you have plotted the demise of someone; let’s say your boss, girlfriend, boyfriend, relative or the person in the movies who won’t stop talking? Do you know how much it costs to take a hit out on someone these days, or how many seconds it would take a single flame to burn this entire magazine? If so, you may have a problem.

Here is an imaginary test. It’s called “If Only I Had a Gun.” It allows you to construct a murder that will never take place! What I am thinking is that killers simply lack will power. You can kill anyone in your mind for free and without getting the prison blues. The pass or fail grade comes at the end. It’s pretty straightforward.

For example: Your neighbor has large parties with a lot of tire-screeching attendants nightly. You suspect he is running drugs and/ or guns out of his garage and he has blocked your trash cans for 3 weeks in a row with his huge diesel truck. He shouts on his cell phone into the wee hours while shooting off a gun and wearing only underpants. Having seen a handful of Colombo’s and several NCIS’s, here is how he becomes deceased (then write it… his gun jams, he falls in a gopher hole and the gun goes off, etc.) Here’s the thing about the “If Only I Had a Gun” Game: It will end and nobody actually dies…Well, hopefully. Phew, I passed! Moving the attention onto you as a parent (this is always fun): Are you raising a murderer? If you haven’t yet made the connection between the dead pigeons that continue to plague your front porch and your 13-year-old son who continues to wet the bed, Dr. Phil has some news for you. As one of the leading experts on everything under the sun, Dr. Phil wants to help you answer if your little bambino is a serial killer in disguise. Did you know acts of violence don’t come out of nowhere? According to the Dr., every parent should be aware of these warning signs that you might be raising the next Zodiac Killer: The moral of the story is: 78 percent of American households are currently raising sadistic, delusional, insane death tanks …it must be those damned video games.

1.

Lock your bedroom door at night if your kid tends to be intelligent, with IQ’s in the “bright normal” range. ($$$ bumper sticker idea: Serial Killer in Training A+++)

2.

Require your child to text you when they’re on their way home to make sure you’re NOT there in the case that “they do poorly in school, have trouble holding down jobs, and often work as unskilled laborers.” Also, if your unskilled laborer child still wets the bed, that means trouble.

3.

Enable motion security at all hours of the day if you frequently smell smoke coming from their bedroom and they start purchasing all of their clothes from “Hot Topic.”

4.

You know you’re in for it if your child “hates their fathers and mothers.” Dr. Phil makes sure to pluralize these because chances are you don’t believe in the sanctity of marriage, and your serial killer child has had it up to here with your antics.

5

After you’ve stalled your impending death by sending little Hannibal under the naïve supervision of a summer camp counselor, construct an underground bunker to house your porno collection. “From an early age, many are intensely interested in voyeurism, fetishism, and sadomasochistic pornography.”

deaths in fashion

Fashion, like most industries, has its polarizing figures and innovators—some who have lived to see the extent of their influence and some who have not. This is a list of six of the most influential members of that fashion hierarchy who met untimely deaths either by murder, suicide, or sheer fate. By: ANthony Ponti

Gianni Versace 1946 - 1975 Massively popular Italian fashion designer and friend to many pop culture icons of the 80’s and 90’s (everyone from Madonna to Princess Diana) was gunned down by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Versace was known for dressing the mistress while other, more conservative designers, such as Giorgio Armani, would dress the wives. July 15—at the Casa Casuarina in South Beach.

Helmut Newton 1920 - 2004 Co-founder of the Italian fashion house Blumarine was trampled to death while on a safari in Africa in 2006. The 67-year-old designer ended up near a startled elephant that caused his death. The Blumarine line is aimed at young luxury customers. It is sensual, yet elegant with breathtaking use of color and applique.

Gianpaolo Tarabini Castellani 1935 - 2006 Co-founder of the Italian fashion house Blumarine was trampled to death while on a safari in Africa in 2006. The 67-year-old designer ended up near a startled elephant that caused his death. The Blumarine line is aimed at young luxury customers. It is sensual, yet elegant with breathtaking use of color and applique.

Isabella Blow 1958 - 2007 In 2007, after numerous attempted suicides, the 48year old editor and style icon finally ended her life. Blow achieved iconic status after establishing credibility for scouting and nurturing talent such as Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy. Blow’s most important mark on fashion was her style, as she along with Bill Cunningham are known as the pioneers of street style.

Christian Dior 1905 - 1957 In 1957, the French fashion designer died from a heart attack in Italy. Many doctors have speculated as to the cause, but most have concluded the reasons to be choking on a fish bone, playing a game of cards, and having strenuous sex. Dior revolutionized women’s fashion after WWII with his “New Look,” which created a curvaceous silhouette to bring focus to women’s hips.

Alexander McQueen 1969 - 2010 February 11th, 2010, the British fashion powerhouse committed suicide just after his Paris presentation of “Old Masters of Paintings.” His inspiration was based around rich colors, textures, and artistry that embodied his unique aesthetic. The conclusion was that he was motivated by the loss of his mother and brother only months prior and the untimely suicide of his dear friend, confidant, and fellow fashion icon, Isabella Blow.

STREET STYLE S TA R S Bag Man Oversized layers, with interesting prints and textures always make for a comfortable complete look. The effortless feel of the street style stars gives you less structure and the true essence of the “ I don’t care” attitude.

All shades of Timberland The evolution of Timberland boots from the work boot to the go to shoe has been apparent for a few seasons. The 90s most faux pas boot has made a serious comeback, the classic Timberland boot has the perfect silhouette to conform to high fashion or a laid back look in street wear. Whether it be the classic Wheat Timbs, a cool colorway or a rare collaboration the winter will certainly be filled with them and not to mention they’re a timeless classic.

Like always the fashion kids are out in full force, drivng the style of the streets from athletic to quirky the streets are always the best source of style inspiration and these are some of our favorite trends of the season chosen by you. -Brittany Byrd

Nothing rhymes with Orange

A touch of color at times is the most important detail. Orange is dynamic and decorative. Whether it’s the shoes, or a subtle layer, a touch of color always works.

Denim Dungarees, The farmer fashionisto For winter this year the nucleolus of the workwear-as-casualwar fashion trend is that of the overalls, onepiece, or coveralls; whatever you choose to crown them, they are a true staple that are so effortlessly chic all while giving a nod to the working men who truly built this country.

Instagram style icons come and go, but Wuiwon is more than that. He is the baby of Jonny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Karl Lagerfeld, for real. His style displays a certain exuberance for whimsy that never fails to arouse my gratitude for eclecticism. Styling is his true form of artistic expression, his funky prints combine with matching socks and platform sneakers and his token bowl cut blonde hair and circle shades only amplify his perfection. His bio on Instagram reads, “Life Only Once, If You Are Not Sure, What Is Their True Wants, You’ll Be Regret It!” You took the words right out of my mouth Wuiwon. I love you.
