EDITOR’S LETTER

As a global women's success catalyst, I have known for many years, there is power in a tribe. As we emerge from a pandemic that paused our world, the success landscape looks significantly different and we need to unite and collaborate as we rise above the noise and take advantage of the changing tide.

This is my love letter to you, as Editor-In-Chief of Women’s Biz Tribe Magazine, expressing how determined I am to make the world a smaller place once again. I believe women want strong women in their lives. Business needs capable women in their boardrooms. Communities need empowered women in their circles. Success needs diverse and authentic women as its foundation.

When I originally launched Women’s Biz Tribe, my objective was to create an online platform where community members could access and learn from women juggling business and life on a global stage. What became apparent very quickly was that we need to understand the pillars of business, the objectives of building marketplaces, and a hub for budding inventors, more importantly, we need belonging.

For me, my team and Women’s Biz Tribe members, this magazine is for you. This magazine is for writers, advertisers, innovators, storytellers, educators, researchers, and worldwide powerhouses.

In this quarterly showstopper of a digital magazine, we have a reach of more than 12M readers via Press Reader. Yes, you read that right. We will feature articles ranging from health, wealth, success, leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, equity, inclusion, lifestyle, impact, business, and stories that matter.

My question to you, do you want to be part of the change? Do you want to show your audience and global communities who you are? Do you want to position yourself as a leader in your niche? Nothing changes, if nothing changes. And I am a curious woman who is always in pursuit to showcase women from around the globe, who are wanting, wishing, daring and dreaming for a better world.

LADIES, YOU GOT THIS!

As a young lass, I recall my dad purchasing a shining pair of blue shoes for me, decorated with gorgeous bows I loved and felt the wonderment of a little princess when I slipped them on, but that fairy tale toppled when my brother pushed me, then stomped on my new shoes and feet

He then yelled, “and now you have another pair of shoes”

I seriously did not have a vast collection at that stage, however his brutal reaction shocked me into a realization that we were infinitely different. I was female and gleaned the fact that I will always have more shoes than he ever will. Women are cut from a different cloth. If the chaos of life can be organized and put into a bento box, there strides a woman in her natural element.

She is vulnerable to create from any void

The essential essence of a woman is kindness in a mother, a fervent wife, a considerate daughter, a trustworthy sister, a balanced professional and a dependable friend

A woman is the personification of ageless beauty, selfless love, and profound dignity.

As a woman of colour, the gap for others to stereotype largely remains It is a mammoth effort to revive an eighteen-century mind-set with twenty-first century vision I had to dig deep to seek the solace in me and not demand a prescriptive approach but rather be solutions oriented.

Around the globe we celebrate and recognise achievements made by prominent women – a great practice to behold

Another significant ‘glow-up' moment is distinguishing your personal journey.

To define where you started, how you impact the world, what difference you make to others and the direction you are heading towards, is so relevant.

It is vital to empower yourself, as it is essential to the health and social development of families, communities, and countries

When women are living safe, fulfilled, and productive lives, they can reach their full potential.

Despite the many gains of modern feminist movements in America, Africa, Asia and beyond, many still believe that women are less worthy of the same educational opportunities afforded to men

Ladies it’s up to us to make a material difference and impact the world in profound, yet subtle ways.

“Dreams don’t turn to gold and there’s just no easy way” echoed so beautifully in a hit Whitney Houston’s track

As a battle tested leader, I know from experience,

countries offer women the same opportunities.

Shake off the limitations that others have carved out for us. Establish your own boundaries and goals

The extremely potent combination of sexism, racism, and economic inequality – even if this may seem too broad to overcome in your current landscape

Find your equilibrium and set the pace

Even when the narrative is against you, we can change the outcomes. One choice, and one day at a time Don’t allow society to define you, so, be the force to be reckoned with

One of the most prominent women in our era is, Oprah Winfrey. Her life did not begin in the limelight with golden handshakes

She is the classic example of changing the chronicle that we are born into. The onus is up to you and me, and not just the big TV personalities.

Research suggests that seventy per cent of the 1 3 billion people living in conditions of poverty are women

In urban areas, 40 percent of the poorest households are headed by women.

In addition to this startling statistic, women dominate the world's food production by 50-80 per cent, but they own less than 10 per cent of the land that the food is grown on.

Let’s turn our focus on the opportunities, solutions and closing the gaping gaps

Contributing their skills to the workforce can make a profound difference to modern society and collectively, we can raise happier and healthier children – our future leaders

Let’s deal with the facts and not opinions from a global perspective, and one of the biggest challenges women face: educational inequality.

Even more disconcerting, in too many places around the globe, women exercising or even seeking their basic rights is interpreted as a direct and destabilizing challenge to existing power structures.

We all need to join the voices of women leaders from around the world challenging governments, the private sector and civil society to revive and reinvest in the policies as well as in the legal and social frameworks that will achieve worldwide gender equality and inclusion

Use your voice to start the shift.

Whether these forces succeed will depend on you and all who stand up to be seen and heard Recognizing the urgency and peril of inaction is critical.

A fundamental shift is encouraging the use of gender inclusive language that does not discriminate against gender stereotypes

Given the key role of language in shaping cultural and social attitudes, using gender inclusive language is a powerful way to promote gender equality and eradicate gender bias

Let’s work in unison to get this ball rolling, especially in male dominated faculties.

Fostering behavioural shifts can be achieved by respecting the woman in a professional work setting I work within medical IT – a sector that was predominately a male division two decades ago.

It is so important to not be defined by a set of standards that don’t resonate with you So, how do I empower myself as a woman?

There are a series of guidelines that you can carry out to work on your own empowerment and become a vested woman:

Distinguish yourself and respect who you are. Frame your character narrative. Enhance your persona. Establish goals and actively work on them Get out of your comfort zone, challenge yourself each day in some way.

Bring out the best in others, cultivate valuable relationships. Build a network of contacts, find support and camaraderie.

Be yourself, show up authentically and foster a sisterhood that is real Work on your selfconfidence, groom, glean, grow and glow in every season of life. Educate yourself, knowledge conquers ignorance

Being a woman means having a robust sense of identity, being confident, and building up the people in your life. It means you have the wisdom to be grateful for what you have while still being hungry enough for growth It’s growth when you dress up in the manner that you want to be addressed – cue, insight.

An authentic woman is a woman who feeds herself, who covers all the needs in the household, and who remains resilient and strong

A most respected woman is someone who doesn't need anything from other people.

She depends on herself

She is the one who struggles for everything that she needs.

Becoming a Proverbs 31 woman isn’t as hard as you think In fact, Proverbs 31 is not a checklist or a to do list Instead, it’s a beautiful representation of what it means to be a virtuous woman.

Being a woman means being able to be powerful and assertive, yet kind at the same time

WOMEN'S BIZ TRIBE MAGAZINE | 10 SEPTEMBER 2022 COVER FEATURE

It means being compassionate and vulnerable towards those we love in our lives without feeling weak for doing so It means striving for our goals even in the face of the adversity we may encounter along the way.

A strong woman knows she has strength enough for the journey, but a woman of strength knows it is in the journey where she will become strong

You must love and care for yourself because that's when the best comes out. Selfempowerment means making a conscious decision to take charge of your destiny

It involves making positive choices, taking action to advance, and being confident in your ability to make and execute decisions Self-empowered people understand their strengths and weaknesses and are motivated to learn and achieve.

An inspiring woman is simply a woman who can fill someone with the desire or urge to do something worthwhile

Something that creates a better world. A woman of distinction appreciates life with everything it has to offer.

A virtuous woman is abundant and has invested time, morals, principles, prayer, money, and hard work in herself Her lover trusts her because she is all there – a woman; a complete package exuding balance, nurture, love and compassion.

A good woman knows her emotions and handles things well It doesn't mean that she should agree to everything. But the important thing is to deal with disagreements to build a stable relationship.

A woman models civility in how she treats others She demonstrates respect, restraint, and personal responsibility in her appearance, behaviour, and communication. She is honourable, and values and respects others. A woman is well-mannered and knows what is appropriate

Gossip is fuelled by so many unpleasant personalities, so remember, when your tongue slips it is hard to gain credibility. Simplistic truths … how often do we tap into this womanhood? Are we inspired by the galvanized effects it has? Are we putting this into action? Ultimately are you seeing those doors flying open in your path?

To seek means to seek HIS ways fundamentally. We cannot lack integrity and the whole nine yards then knock and expect the proverbial door to swing in our favour

Seek to align yourself to the ‘True North’ –to unlock visible and invisible barriers. A perceptive woman understands how to play the bat and ball She is buoyed by her internal vector

Truth decays in our society, homes, relationships, friendships, family, and workspaces. We have stood up for so much and changed the course of history yet as women we can also tarnish the beautiful and unravel in mysterious ways I encourage you to discourage the envy of others, and follow your own path.

A smart woman discerns the baubles of life and she understands how to value friendships It is especially challenging for women to support and cheer another woman who appears to be more successful.

Bitterness and envy can rush to the surface It may seem easy to covet what she has but we have never walked in her shoes You can use many adjectives to describe me, and success has been a palpable part of my journey coupled with distress.

I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to write a book, and to help humanity I experienced a whole new side of womanhood after my book was published, and I reached the status of an international best-selling author. Ladies, life is not a competition. I supported and championed courses both financially and emotionally

Through the times of our life, where we have the opportunity to broadcast our success, some may wish something different for you The task here is to listen to your inner self, and your supporters

Begin with cleansing your heart

How can we fix the gender gap when we cannot stand on the same platform as another woman? We may never get used to living next door to Alice or seeing her ride the success wave better than us

Kindness is free, so sprinkle that stuff every day and everywhere. I relentlessly try to maintain my modicum of inclusion, I gathered my offerings, unfilled cup and talents and dashed out the bustling arena

Don’t dwell where you are not celebrated, encouraged, supported, honoured, and valued Make room for each other until there is no place to hide

My takeaway to you, is that it’s vital to imprint self-belief, selflove, and true self-reflection.

Over the past few years, there has been a lot of talk about the fear of artificial intelligence making writers redundant. While this may be a bit of an exaggeration, it is undeniable that computers are becoming more and more advanced

Why use AI to write?

There are a number of reasons why someone might want to use artificial intelligence to write. For one, it can be a lot faster than writing by hand Additionally, it can be more accurate, as computers can remember things perfectly and don’t get tired like humans do. Finally, AI can help with brainstorming and coming up with ideas, as it can quickly generate a large number of possibilities

How does AI write?

There are different ways that artificial intelligence can be used to write. One common method is to use a neural network, which is a type of machine learning This involves feeding the computer a lot of data, such as a corpus of existing texts, and training it to generate new texts that are similar to the ones it has seen before.

Another approach is to use natural language processing, which involves teaching the computer grammar and rules about how language works.

This can be used to generate new sentences or paragraphs that are grammatically correct and make sense

Finally, some people simply write algorithms that generate random strings of words, which can then be edited by a human to create a finished piece

What are the benefits of AI writing?

There are several benefits of using artificial intelligence to write. One is that it can save a lot of time, as the computer can generate a first draft much faster than a human can Additionally, it can be more accurate, as computers don’t make mistakes like humans do.

The Fear Of Artificial Intelligence Making Writers Redundant

What are the limitations of AI writing?

There are also some limitations to using artificial intelligence to write. One is that it can be difficult to create something that sounds natural and human-like Additionally, it can be hard to teach the computer all the rules of grammar and usage, which means that it might make mistakes. Finally, some people simply don’t like the idea of a machine writing their content for them

HOW JUGGLING BABIES AND MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IS NOT THAT DIFFERENT

IN THE US, THIS NUMBER HAS HIT A RECORD HIGH, WITH 8.3% OF FORTUNE 500 CEO'S LISTED AS FEMALE LEADERS!

Female CEOs remain a rare commodity. And it’s time for drastic change. Certainly, we are seeing more women fill executive leadership roles, but few are handed the baton when it comes to feeding the bottom line Did you know that only 4 6% of the Global 500 CEOs are women?

In the US, this number has hit a record high, with 8 3% of Fortune 500 CEOs listed as female leaders! It is clear that we still have a long way to go With the pandemic severely denting the gender C-Suite, it feels a little like, ‘one step forward, and twenty reforms back’.

If you haven’t guessed it already, I am a passionate thought-leader and ‘fempreneur’ when it comes to healthily disruption of stagnant thinking. I am a progressive CEO, who is inspired to support women like me.

Women, who have raised a family, juggled a household, commanded a boardroom, and increased profitability for companies that count.

Starting my career as a Registered Nurse didn’t come without its massive hurdles

In fact, life felt like one huge balancing act, testing my resilience and thirst for success. Whilst starting my professional life in Health Care, before launching into Change Management as a CEO and Entrepreneur, I was raising my family of five including 2 sets of twins born just 26 months apart.

Not only do I champion Australasian enterprises seeking successful leadership, but I am also an advocate for equal balance in the workplace, because I know the struggles in getting to the top

But this isn’t a new topic.

For years, we have recycled the narrative that we need to see more women climb the leaderboard in business For the most part, this agenda has been a success. Despite such a low percentage of women sitting in CEO roles in the Fortune 500 companies, in 2021, the number of women running businesses on the Fortune 500 hit an all-time record: 41

As a former of CEO of Glaucoma Australia, an organisation dedicated to providing sight saving education, support, and advocacy to people with glaucoma and their families, I am no stranger on how to maximise impact with a punch.

Becoming Annie, The Biography of a Curious Woman’, inspires women to set the bar high to achieve success, balance and happiness on their terms

As the host of ‘Memoirs of a Successful Woman’ podcast, I have interviewed over 100 inspirational women worldwide My incredible portfolio of guests ranges from business leaders, entrepreneurs, humanitarians, athletes, and the creators of start-ups on a mission.

And when it comes to business, we need to get clear (and honest) of how the cogs to change, fundamentally work Hiring really does come from the top We know that HR companies and recruitment executives tap into a pool of regular candidates

This in turn, ignores any untapped talent resources and reduces the concept of ‘fresh blood’ into senior roles.

My question on the forefront of my forever moving mindset is, ‘how can we inspire, lead and achieve gender parity without resistance?’

The answer tends to be not one without struggle Therefore, I herald any strategy that enhances a woman’s ambition Because, that is the leader that I am.

As the founder of The Women's Business Incubator, Life by Design and Women

Collaborating Globally, I coin myself the digital pioneer helping women to push their limits of what is truly possible.

In addition to raising a family of five, I have gained many big wins and professional accolades over 30 years of striving to the top in business

Working across multiple sectors including Health Education, Corporate, NFP and Charity sectors, I am considered one of Australia’s female leaders to watch

As an industry leader, I was awarded the distinguished title in 2020, as one of ’50 Unsung Business Heroes’, in recognition of my formidable courage, compassion, perseverance, conviction, and selflessness when coaching women to aim for their highest potential.

This is why ‘The Women’s Incubator’; an innovative collective, was designed to help Start-ups, Scale-ups and those wanting to Dominate in Business succeed

Emergingfromaglobal pandemicforsomany,

hasnotbeeneasy.

With an economic nose-dive and employment losses worldwide, I don’t want women to just survive, I want them to unequivocally thrive. With so many women forced from the workforce into the default role of primary child carer, working from home ‘on paper’, was no longer an option. Women had no option, but to quit

Conversely, the pandemic was the trigger that for so many, was the catalyst to rethink their life goals. The year that changed the modern world, was the year to ignite dormant dreams In a time of such unsettledness, women were prepared to rock the boat, and become the CEOs of their own making

ThisiswhereIstepin.

Behind my purpose is to ensure th woman can land a 7-figure salary i possible You see, business needs women. Not just to lessen the gen parity on the current record, which remains fiercely unbalanced, but because we make profits It doesn simpler than that Inviting a woman an executive board cannot be a to gesture.

With diversity, inclusion, equity, and equality, forming operational plans for corporate giants, talking about it theoretically is no longer enough. Teasing out the parts of women’s leadership is owning the parts of ourselves we were previously asked to mute

More organisations need to take that leap of faith We need to encourage mindsets and discourage regression We need to be passionate, persuasive and persistent. Otherwise, it would be all too easy to throw in the towel and not recover from these unprecedented times

Women have the ability to champion collective leadership, think innovatively and still roll-out a decent profit. Women can juggle, mentor and teach

In leadership, we need to inspire and not just venture onto a one-woman journey to the bank. Never has there been a more important time to uncover and discover a back-burner business obal champion for equity and y, I want to see a woman not every boardroom, but in fifty per the boardroom seats.

In years to come, psychologists, researchers, economic masterminds, and educators will study those who lived through COVID-19. They will hold our governments and economists under scrutiny and study the societal response to the virus that shut down the world, overnight

The Coronavirus outbreak has dismantled health, economy, and social norms in a blink of an eye

At the forefront of Australia’s female workforce, is Annie Gibbins, CEO The Women’s Business Incubator, keynote speaker, podcast host and best-selling author. With an unshakeable commitment to improve gender equality across all sectors worldwide, Annie is now leading the campaign to rescue the Covid-19 lost leaders, women

Annie explains, “For many women, the coronavirus pandemic has forced them back into traditional gender roles. As COVID-19 continues to infiltrate the world’s economy, women are facing little choice when it comes to prioritising domestic security over success

Despite the world opening up again, the international fallout for women in business is at serious threat ” Are we looking at gender regression versus the efforts of gender recognition?

THE COMEBACK OF THE COVID-19 LOST LEADERS

Just when the conversation was heating up about gender equality and the disproportionate pay gap between male and female coworkers, the global pandemic reversed the efforts of progress for women in the workplace.

According to McKinsey and Company, women’s jobs are 1.8 times more vulnerable to this crisis than men’s jobs. Women make up 39 percent of global employment but account for 54 percent of overall job losses. Despite the women and men diluting employment across multiple sectors, women’s unemployment is dropping rapidly

The reason behind this significant decline during the pandemic, is the overwhelming burden for women to bear the brunt of unpaid childcare. As childcare centres and schools battened down the hatches in the height of the pandemic, the roles within the household, sadly defaulted back to a scenario unfavoured for women earning their bread also

At the age of 23, Annie gave birth to twin boys and 26 months later, another set of twins arrived Six years later, Annie’s tribe was complete with the arrival of her daughter, so she is no stranger when it comes to holding her own. But in the recovery of a global pandemic, Annie explains, “we need to take that leap of faith

We need to encourage growth mindsets and discourage regression We need to be passionate, persuasive, and persistent Otherwise, it would be all too easy to throw in the towel and not recover from these unprecedented times.”

SEPTEMBER 2022 WOMEN'S BIZ TRIBE MAGAZINE | 24

“As a result of Covid-19, typically mothers are spending an extra hour each day on unpaid housework and four extra hours on childcare. It has been noted that fathers are expending about half of that effort, putting in only an extra 30 minutes on housework and two additional hours on childcare during the crisis. Essentially, women at work are picking up the slack despite the professional demands being no different,” she says

Likewise, women are clearly upping the ante when it comes to unpaid work at home. Preliminary survey results by Dr Brendan Churchill and colleagues at the University of Melbourne suggest this gender gap is widening.

Parents have faced their most difficult choices yet Often, the burden falls on the mother For those sitting in the precarious position of ‘how I can have it all?’, women are submitting their resignations faster than men Not only does the economy suffer, but any advancements made for women to excel in leadership roles massively dips.

A study conducted in the UK suggests that 46% of mothers that have been made redundant during the pandemic cite lack of adequate childcare as the cause

It was noted that 70% of women with caring responsibilities who requested furlough following school closures in 2021 had their request denied This has led to almost half of working mothers (48%) being worried about negative treatment from an employer because of childcare responsibilities

As a global leader and business strategist, Annie explains, “whilst the virus was unpredicted, our professional infrastructures have been grossly under prepared, to protect those facing demotions, unfair dismissals, and inevitable job losses ”

Now leading a global campaign, Annie wants to implement true change in gender equity and equality “Women account for the hardest hit in specific sectors

Women account for employees in industries with some of the highest Covid-19 job losses, such as retail, accommodation and food and customer services The skewed irony when it comes to employment demands during a pandemic, are the heroes on our frontlines,” says Annie

“Nurses, doctors, health care workers and paramedics have undoubtedly risen to the challenge in employment adversity. Many other frontline workers, including teachers, early childhood educators and aged care professionals have taken care of our young and supported our elderly.

For every positive COVID-19 result, a child is at risk, a classroom is closed, and school gates chained. Predominantly these occupations employ women, so with communities in lockdown means less women in the workplace”.

Women in business across the economic footprint of diversity suggests the road to recognition and recovery is going to be long We know that the global pandemic has clearly taken its toll on all of us. We are facing and will continue to observe the aftermath of what has been an unprecedented time. The mental exhaustion for those attempting to do it all, is more prevalent than ever.

A report released by McKinsey and Company, titled: Women in the Workplace 2021, recognised that during a year and a half into the COVID-19 pandemic, mothers and women in senior positions have felt more pressure, exhaustion and burnout in the workplace than men They are also more likely to have their judgement questioned, be mistaken for someone more junior, and be the victim of demeaning remarks.

With only 8 percent of women accounting for C-Suite roles, women leaders need to strategise their comeback more than ever.

Change has never been more necessary than now

PHRASE"GLASSCEILING"WHEN SPEAKINGASAPANELLISTATA 1978WOMEN'SEXPOSITIONIN NEWYORK.

It is a term that refers to a metaphorical invisible barrier that prevents women and minorities from being promoted to senior positions within an organisation or industry.

This concept was later discussed in a 1986 Wall Street Journal article, outlining the corporate hierarchy that prevents women from advancing their careers to higher roles

When it comes to women of colour representation, the statistics are frankly dismal. Thankfully this is a changing space, albeit slowly I have spent most of my professional life participating in forums and spaces where hardly anyone looks like me This has only worsened the more senior I became. Countless times, I have been in meetings where I have been mostly surrounded by a clone of older white men.

Women of colour continue to be underrepresented in top executive positions According to a recent report by LeanIn and McKinsey, only 6% of senior executives at the top 100 companies are women of colour. Women of colour face additional challenges when it comes to climbing the ranks because their representation is so low The glass ceiling for women of colour is more challenging to break than for white women, and there’s no one way to do it. But with strategic preparation, you can improve your prospects as a woman of colour looking for leadership opportunities

Here are 6 ways to break the glass ceiling as a woman of colour:

Network with people in power

This may seem obvious, but it’s important and often overlooked by women of colour If you want to be in an executive role one day, you need to build relationships with people in power If you’re not networking with the right people now, you probably won’t be in the running when an executive position becomes available Part of networking is being strategic and intentional

SEPTEMBER 2022
WOMEN'S BIZ TRIBE MAGAZINE | 30 MARILYNLODENCOINEDTHE

This can mean joining organisations or attending events where you’ll build relationships with people in power. If you don’t have easy access to these kinds of opportunities, create them Reach out to people in your network who have been successful in your industry or a related field and ask them if they have time to meet for coffee or lunch.

If you aspire to be in a top role one day, the sooner you start taking on leadership roles, the better Even if you’re not in a position to lead in your organisation, you can take initiative outside of work to lead and build your skillset

You can start your own business, or volunteer in your community anything that will give you experience in a leadership role. When you’re part of a team, you have a chance to lead and to coach others on ways to improve their skillset This can be especially helpful for women of colour who feel they have less room to lead in the workplace. By taking on a leadership role in your personal life, you can build your leadership skills and experience and put yourself in a better position to receive promotion at work

Develop a mentorship strategy

Having a mentor is one of the most important tools you have as a woman of colour looking to advance your career in a whitedominated industry Without a mentor, you can feel isolated, less likely to receive opportunities for promotion, and less likely to be perceived as a leader.

If you’re in a position to give back to your community, mentoring an aspiring woman leader can help you put your experience to good use and make a difference in your industry.

Be continuously learning and developing your skill set

Part of breaking the glass ceiling is having the skills and knowledge you’ll need to succeed in an executive role

This doesn’t mean that you need to know every industry trend or be an expert in every field it’s impossible to know everything But you need to be continuously learning and developing your skill set so that you have the knowledge you need to make strategic decisions that will benefit your organisation.

If you’re currently in a role that doesn’t require you to have a wide skill set, you can still build your skills and knowledge outside of work to have what you need when promotion opportunities come your way.

Consider taking an online course, reading industry publications, or joining a community where you can actively engage with others to build your skills You might even consider volunteering in an area of your industry that allows you to use your skills this can be a great way to get real-life experience that will help you develop your skills and build your resume

Let go of those that bring you down. Afterall, life is too short to waste time and energy with people who don’t raise you up.
WOMEN'S BIZ TRIBE MAGAZINE | 31 SEPTEMBER 2022

Don’t let bias hold you back

Every woman in every industry has to deal with bias In fact, bias has been proven to keep women from progressing in their careers, especially women of colour.

This can be a huge challenge for women who want to be in a top executive role and may feel as though they are hitting a glass ceiling This is a hard one to overcome, but you can do it with selfawareness and strategic preparation. Pay attention to how others perceive you in your organisation, and attempt to understand how bias may be holding you back

You can also try to understand the bias that may be operating against you by studying it in other industries. If you have the opportunity to share your ideas and perspectives with your colleagues, do it This can help break down bias by giving your colleagues a chance to see you as a leader

Use your network to find role models and mentors

If you can’t find a mentor at work or in your network, you can turn to your social network to find role models and mentors Social media platforms like LinkedIn have built-in functionality to find people in your industry who have skills and experience you want to learn from.

With the help of your social network, you can find people who have been in your shoes and can offer you advice and mentorship

You can also tap into your network to find role models and mentors who are outside your industry.

If you’re looking for a woman leader in another industry, ask your network if they know someone who can help you

is more challenging to break than for white.

Your network may be able to introduce you to a woman leader who can help you learn more about her industry, as well as offer you advice for breaking the glass ceiling in your own industry

Take opportunities to lead

Leadership opportunities are one of the biggest indicators of future success for those climbing the ranks If you aspire to be in a top role one day, the sooner you start taking on leadership roles, the better

Even if you’re not in a position to lead in your organisation, you can take initiative outside of work to lead and build your skill set

You can start your own business, or volunteer in your community anything that will give you experience in a leadership role. When you’re part of a team, you have a chance to lead and to coach others on ways to improve their skillset

By taking on a leadership role in your personal life, you can build your leadership skills and experience and put yourself in a better position to receive promotion at work

The wrap-up!

The glass ceiling for women of colour is harder to break than the glass ceiling for white women Breaking it requires strategic preparation and a willingness to acknowledge and address bias.

Network with people in power, take opportunities to lead, develop a mentorship strategy, and be continuously, you

ASK ANNIE...

Surviving Your First Year As An Entrepreneur

No doubt, you've the read the stats and facts than can bring on a cold sweat pretty damn fast, and every part of us wants to shut down the dream before it's even started

Let me tell you, if you are feeling the stress, pinch, fear, overwhelm and have paced around your kitchen at 1am, dare I say, you are right on track. Over the years, we have heard the alarming percentages that 90% of new businesses are shutting-up-shop, before they've even made a sale Erm, first fact fail

Actually, 75% of new businesses survive the first year, 69% survive the first two years, and 50% make it to five years

Sounds better already, right?

I could write an entire book on the first 12-months on the pre-ladder, ladder, which I might one day

However, there are some fundamentals that you need to know from the get-go

Cut yourself some slack: Accept there is going to be some stress involved. One of the most exhilarating aspects of being an entrepreneur is planning and taking risks to grow your business

You will want to bail, so hold your nerve: When every entrepreneur says that you're going to have your ups and downs, they're right The challenge for most entrepreneurs is recognizing when they've reached a peak or whether they are in a valley

Quitting a plan isn't quitting the dream: The biggest thing I have discovered in business, as I need to be more flexible than ever Backing your business requires resilience and rigidity, however, don’t let that rigidity prevent you from changing your actions and goals.

Get out and about (even if you're wiped): There are of course many types of partnerships and having the savviness to identify a potential collaboration is key Networking is more than the exchange of business cards and LinkedIn reviews – it’s about raving from the rooftops.

Keep an eye on your customer: There are SO many moving parts when setting up a business In the first years as an entrepreneur, whilst you have a list of things to do as long as your arm, you need to keep one eye constantly fixed on your customer

Your sacred savings may dent (for now): I feel that so much of being a successful entrepreneur comes down to grit and resilience, and to following your intuition when the path ahead is unclear. You must do what others are unwilling to do.The truth is, you never know what's going to happen and you'd likely be capable of living on less money than you think -- so why not take a chance and live the life you really desire?

You're going to make it!

This is all about trust.

Trust in your business model, trust in your vision, and trust in yourself.

It’s hard to ignore Imposter Syndrome, because let’s face it, we are all human at the end of the day. I trust in you.
