Welcome

Message

he last few months have been nothing short of spectacular. Along with the Women’s Biz Global community, we have created so many exciting outcomes, it’s hard to know what to talk about first. Let me start with YOU. When I decided to leave my role as CEO, for a major Australian charity, to create Women's Biz Global, I was taking a risk. As a global women’s Success Catalyst, and as someone who mentors international female leaders, I needed to believe in myself more than ever. In fact, I have always backed myself, however, this doesn’t come without hesitation. I know you get it. I was going to need a strategy, business plan, and most of all, be versatile with my brand. Think of business like being a passenger (‘pillion’) on a motorcycle, on the open road. You have to trust the direction, get comfortable with speed, and lean into the corners, because any resistance can very quickly become unsteady. That is what business is like. I am beyond grateful for a community that has grown exponentially overnight. Literally, in just a matter of months, we have welcomed nearly 1000 members to our tribe, and this is the product of a

collective need: community.

and be the best versions of themselves. Now, we are in the busy process of curating, not one, not two, but three further anthologies in 2023!

With this community, we launched our very first edition of Women’s Biz Magazine, which now has a reach of 300 million readers, targeting 12 million subscribers since partnering with Press Reader.

I know right, this is all magical kinds of crazy!

As a woman who knows the power of a platform, I hosted the Success Speaker Summit, featuring 50+ international speakers, who defined, refined, and celebrated, what ' ‘success’’ means to them. The feedback following this event was insanely positive, so to keep the momentum rolling, we are now planning our next event! More on this throughout this edition! Not long after, in September 2022, ‘A Woman’s Guide to Business Domination’, a purpose-driven anthology launched, featuring 18 industry experts who have shared their genius into the next-level! This book was created to inspire, empower, and guide women to want more, achieve more,

And of course, we are thrilled for what’s coming up next in Women’s Biz Magazine. We are welcoming back the incredible Kelly Markey, our former cover feature, and a collection of new writers, submissions, book reviews with Kez, a new women’s health column with Dr Talat Uppal, and so much more. Plus, we have new events, opportunities, and insightful take-aways coming up in December’s Women’s Biz Magazine. For now, please can I take this opportunity to say a massive, heartfelt thank you. Thank you for believing in yourself, your dreams, your people, and the endless possibilities that stand before you.

Service to humanity is service to God.

T

he people who serve humanity are the real heroes of a society. Dr Adama Kalokoh, a global humanitarian, is one of these heroes. She is an AfricanAmerican female changemaker who excels in a variety of fields and industries. She is working around the clock to empower young women, orphans, and other vulnerable groups in Sierra Leone, which is in West Africa. Due to her experience of volunteerism, she felt a great sense of responsibility and inspiration to become an Ambassador and Agent-ofChange for young girls and women in Sierra Leone. She chose, as her primary focus, to help support women and girls in rural areas because of their huge lack of resources and access to services. At the same time, she is working to sensitize, uplift, and reinforce farmers in Sierra Leone to become change agents in their communities. Dr. Kalokoh has revealed the power of agriculture in boosting the economy while developing business owners. With the right resources, more farmers mean more crops that can close the gap of food insecurity. Dr. Kalokoh has contributed meaningfully to the fields of education, agriculture, and health for vulnerable populations in her ancestral village. Dr. Adama Kalokoh completed her undergraduate studies at the University of the District of Columbia, majoring in Public Health, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Education.

She serves as a Country Leader for Sierra Leone and the USA within the Global Goodwill Ambassadors Foundation (GGAF). She is an advocate of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a motivational speaker, an author, a leader in women's empowerment, and the Founder/CEO of Impact Sierra Leone, an organization founded to reduce socio economic challenges in Sierra Leone through empowerment, education, and strong partnerships with the Diaspora community. She was recently named one of the Most Distinguished Women Change Makers in Africa for 2020-2021.

Under Dr. Adama's wise leadership, Impact Sierra Leone has become one of the world's most renowned non-profit organizations. "Impact Sierra Leone (ISL) is a 501 (c) 3 organization founded in 2019 to reduce socioeconomic challenges in Sierra Leone and beyond through empowerment, public health, education, and building strong partnerships with the Diaspora community. ISL is creating economic development opportunities for vulnerable communities through sustainable agriculture while promoting diversity, inclusion, gender equality, and

food security. Her current efforts include directly supporting the Foindu Village community located in rural Sierra Leone with educational tools, clothes donations, and support for farming activities. ISL launched the Seeds of Life program in March 2019 to combat hunger amongst primary school children in the village. The program has expanded from one farm site to four farm sites. The core goals for the Seeds of Life program is to empower, enrich, and educate. Dr. Kalokoh is committed to promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within her organization and doing her part to reduce poverty. Using her passion for public health, she launched the Seeds of Life program to help over 250 primary school children access fruits and vegetables and learn about wellness. Impact Sierra Leone is working within the framework of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) program and is using it as the overarching theme to guide its programs and initiatives. ISL is committed to specifically addressing the following SDGs in Sierra Leone: No Poverty, Gender Equality Zero Hunger, and Good Health and Well Being" Dr. Adama said. Women are the backbone of a nation. Empowered women empower other women. Dr. Adama is a great example of women's empowerment. Young women need female role models to inspire success.

Dr. Adama is a highly talented woman. She has proved herself to be one of the best motivational speakers. "As a speaker, I have been honored to speak at several conferences, including the City Scope Africa (CSA) organization (2022); African Business Professional and Entrepreneurs Conference (October 2022); Well Global Summer Series Conference on Career Employability and Enterprise Leadership (CEEL) (August 2022); The Rotaract Mount Aureole Weekly Series with the theme: "Empowered to Lead": There is a leader in all of us; Scholars for Change Series (SAEL) Change Makers Forum (April 2021); African Seasoned Speakers Network with the theme: The Power of Impact and topic-Being a Game Changer (September 2022); Women’s Biz Tribe Success Summit speaking on the topic: The Power of My Voice (September 2022); The International Women’s Day 2021 event led by the Jacobs Abbey Global Institute for Leadership Studies with the theme: Challenge the Status Quo; Breaking the Glass Ceiling, Real Talk, Real Solutions Show with Dr. Anana-Women and Youth Civility Practitioner; The 2022 Lady Politico Power Global Leadership Conference with the theme: Women in PoliticsThe Barriers to Participation and Leadership (March 8–9, 2022); the 2022 Rise of Africa Virtual Conference with Clarence Cole and Honorable Clyde Rivers (August 20th); DP Global Ministries (April 2021)The Leadership Conversation; Speak Life 2 The Nations (July 2020); International Civility for the Girl Child Day with the theme-My Voice, Our Future (October 2020); International Civility for the Girl Child Day

with the theme-It’s Now O’clock (October 2022); Dr. Ruby’s Talk Show: "Empower With Your Story Series" (August 2022); People of Impact Discussion on Imagination in Empowering Children (September 2022); and Kuntrol Global Conference for the "Voice Against Racism and Rape" (June 2020)," Dr. Adama said. Successful people believe that challenges are stepping stones to success. Undoubtedly, obstacles lead us to success. Though I don’t live with regrets on my journey, I have encountered some bumps along the way.

As a single mother of two children, the challenge of balancing work and life while leading my own foundation has proved to be a challenge. At times, it has meant taking Zoom meetings and participating in virtual events while making dinner at the same time. In addition, I have a full-time job and belong to several global organizations. I lead my NGO from the US and communicate with my team virtually via social media. I am constantly playing the juggling act but keeping organized has helped me conquer this challenge over time. Economically speaking, it can be challenging to run an international NGO; most of our monthly activities are selffunded with a few monthly donors. We are working towards receiving a grant that can help

December 2022 us with our monthly activities and help us expand our services. There are many ups and downs to living a life of service and humanity. Some of the common challenges we face are fundraising, sustaining our programs, and time management. Currently, we are short-staffed, so that means I wear lots of hats and struggle often with maintaining my work-life balance. However, my passion, purpose and power have kept me going through the challenges. I am the proud mother of two children, Jonathan and Miriam, who are growing up fast. There are challenges that arise in raising children while leading an NGO. But it is my deep passion for my work and for helping people that keeps me going. Most importantly, having a heart of humility and integrity makes it less challenging, "Dr. Adama said.

Dr. Adama's passion to serve humanity is highly commendable. She has devoted her life to serving humanity. "I hope to continue serving humanity through my missionary work, but I’d like to scale up and expand our business operations. I want to launch several other projects that promote literacy, public health, enhanced education, empowerment, mentorship, and more that will bring lasting solutions to poverty issues. I hope to grow Impact Sierra WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 9

Women's Biz Magazine Leone into a Global brand that will transform the lives of many people around the world. Building on the Seeds of Life program, we are in the process of implementing a school feeding program, rebuilding the school, and starting a literacy program that will benefit the students and women of the community. We plan to develop empowerment centers in rural areas where people can learn skills like sewing, craftwork, and technology. At these empowerment centers, we will also be launching a skills training program for young women and girls soon. I hope to collaborate with other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and International Development Partners to empower women and take Sierra Leone to the next level. I’d like to grow our signature program, the Seeds of Life Program, and expand it to other locations. I hope to purchase my own land to grow a robust farm and launch a skills Development program for women and girls. I also want to get my master’s in International Policy & Development. I want to launch a Youth Mentorship Program that will also have a virtual component where youth in Sierra Leone can connect with youth in the US, "Dr. Adama said. Female role models boost young women's motivation by modeling a guide to achieving success. Dr. Adama's motivational quotes are a vital source of motivation for young women around the world. "To the young Africans in the U.S. and Africa, I would encourage them to always remember that there is power in the unity and voice of the youth-Their Voice Matters! I would advise the youth to seize

every opportunity to better themselves and give back to their community. Youth empowerment is so important for improving our communities. I would advise them to find a passion that is deep in their hearts and then map out a plan to turn this passion into their life purpose. I would remind them that they were created to become great, so they should always strive to be a valuable member of their community. I would advise them to find a mentor who could serve as a source to help them reach their greatest potential. I would remind the youth that they are Bold, Brave, Beautiful and Brilliant!

For first-generation born Africans, we must use our influence, our connections, our energy, and our skills to help our countries in any way. As African descendants, we have the honor of knowing our roots and making our ancestors proud by giving back. By serving as a bridge between Africa and the Diaspora, we can bring much-needed resources while exchanging cultures

and promoting togetherness. I would remind them to know your value and worth. Improve your skills, put them to use every day to get better, and change your mindset. Attitude is everything; focus on the positives and think outside the box. Creativity is a gift; use it. Use your voice and make a roar. Your voice matters—find platforms where you can speak and hear other speakers. Get organized with a notebook and write down all your skills and goals. Apply the SMART goals method—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timebound. Use social media for good. Be consistent in your messaging and brand yourself. Be inspiring with your content and practice random messages of kindness. Tell your story and create motivational videos. Seek other connections that are doing similar work and take advantage of free events and webinars that allow you to meet others in your field. My favorite quote is "United We Stand, and Together We Rise." This is the motto I have carried with me throughout my journey, "Dr. Adama said. Dr. Adama's life story is highly inspiring. Every moment of her life is a source of inspiration for men and women of all ages. Her passion to serve mankind and empower women/girls is highly inspiring. Due to her outstanding humanitarian services and achievements, Dr Adama Kalokoh has become one of the world's most inspiring humanitarians.

hen a warthog sees a lion, every cell in its brain sends a chain reaction to shut off other parts of the system such as digestion, sound, smell or sex. All the warthog's energy is focused on running from the lion and this is the definition of ‘anxiety in motion’. Like the warthog and the lion, sometimes in life, there is no time to stop and ponder on other facets of life when under threat. How often do you slip into your ultimate mould to survive when catastrophe strikes? I believe the abundance of our heart or our unadvertised values, comes to the surface in moments like this. Even in the model of chaos, we exhibit influential prowls and demonstrate our finesse. In recent times, I saw this demonstrated by a woman who exhibited influential finesse in her stride. I salute women of this calibre. So how do we apply influential finesse to the canvas of both our personal and professional lives? Just like the warthog, we go into a lock and survival mode. Do you paint a picture of panache when you are actually exhibiting to the world your influential finesse? After six years in a coma, German sports racing legend Michael Schumacher, wakes up and recognises his wife instantly. His wife spent most of her money on treating her husband until the doom of bankruptcy hit. Despite the big money Schumacher made from his Formula 1 career, after dominating the race track for years through sponsorship and contracts, his fortune was gone. There was a huge sense of loss

and hope for his recovery, until he woke up one day. The first person he saw as he opened his eyes was his wife, the woman who stayed by his bedside for six years. Society is fanatical about marrying and dating financially stable partners, at times, disregarding the focus on mental, emotional, transcendent, vigour, and grit that makes for a stable partnership. So, in turn, authentic and influential finesse comes as a package. To manage the external corporate domain, we have to first master managing our personal sphere. When we learn to identify and manage the small, often hard micro elements, then we automatically learn how to manage this in every pillar of life.

are doing the same old thing for 50 years and getting the same results, is there any wonder why despondency kicks in. Whatever page you are on; glamorous or not, exposing vulnerability is the strongest and kindest act you can offer yourself. You are a brand. Your prowess is a brand. Your determination is a brand. The ultimate question is, ‘what is your brand saying to those close to you, and those you lead in a corporate setting?’

What does your brand say about you? Is it about style, authenticity, emotions or sheer profits? This is where your brand is all about influential finesse.

Holistic and influential finesse comes as one. Schumacher's wife displayed her influential finesse to the world, when catastrophe threatened her normal life. She rallied, garnered and captured the world’s attention because she carried herself with courage and grace. Do not be scared to be associated with a robust woman. There will come a day when she will exemplify bravery in the face of trauma. You can learn from a lifetime of experience or, you can live every day making the same mistakes twice.

Finesse allows trailblazers to steer clear of tricky situations. Business is not perfect; it's a mash-up of risk and fear, and sadly, not everyone is cheering us from the sidelines. These are not our people. Finesse has fundamental components: power of selfawareness, ability to read the situation, loyal stakeholders, skill to foresee the impact, aptitude to convey a measured presence, and talent to differ. Comparison is never helpful, especially when your influence is your stand-out attribute. Env has no place either. We must rise above the norm, dominate the market, and carry ourselves with empowerment, inspiration, and an ability to command trust.

The distinction between thriving and surviving is not just about age and maturity, it's about humility; learning to live with limitless beliefs. When you WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 13

Women's Biz Magazine If Schumacher’s wife focused on her depleting finances, then perhaps the narrative would have been different for both her and her husband. This woman models to us how influential finesse is just like the warthog that was chased by the lion. She slips into what comes naturally. She taps into the values that she wants to live by; the promises that she made and the vows that she took. Your ability to influence is no different. The person that you are behind closed doors has the same ability to influence a boardroom. Influencing others is essential, but it’s more than just giving commands. A brighter picture is painted when you stimulate, encourage and inspire others towards a common goal. Influential finesse radiates the beautiful resonance of your character in or out of Zoom meetings, spattering it all spontaneously, whether disorganised, marvellous, outstanding or unattractive. To be truly effective — in good times and in times of great challenge — leaders must master the ability to influence others. By definition, influence is the ability to affect the behaviour of others in a particular direction, leveraging key strategies that include, associate, and motivate others. Significant public figures know that by promoting themselves authentically, for all the right reasons, they can make a positive impact almost immediately. Building and maintaining a fountain of trust is essential for leading. Without trust, leaders may lead, but they’ll never capture the full commitment, capabilities, and creativity of their teams. Leveraging these assets is invaluable when tackling tough

SUCCESS is both humble and profound. challenges or when making strategic changes, so trust again, is so vital. I guess Schumacher knew exactly who he wanted on his team, especially when the chips were down and he couldn't fend for himself. Everyone who is reaching for that mountain, I urge you to recognise and cultivate the power of your networks. Organizations are progressively dynamic; they transform in size and shape over time. Influential leaders recognise that their personal networks must also be dynamic, and they continually grow and strengthen their communities. They are strategic about choosing how and when to tap into this network. I am certain that Schumacher’s

14 | WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

wife could not have been at her husband's bedside for six consecutive years, championing his recovery, without a network to sustain her too. Every situation or project needs the silent workforce that will get the job done. Work until you no longer have to introduce yourself, especially when your influential finesse precedes your reputation! May your ultimate influence close the gap between subtle gestures, with loud acts of influential finesse. A healthy marriage or organisation will default to commitment, loyalty, and unwavering support. This far exceeds the financial gain of career hungry lions. It just speaks straight from the heart.

Is Procrastination

Your Pain Point? Annie Gibbins

B

efore the incredible milestones, often comes the inevitable procrastinations. Another way to look at it is, procrastination is a softened-up version of fear.

I have no doubt that you are one almighty powerhouse, who knows what she wants deep down. You are someone who knows their niche, has a backstory to tell and a brand vision that matters. But it's not easy taking that fear, or procrastination, over the line. As an empowerment coach, I meet all walks of life. It’s a part of my job, in fact let’s say passion, that fuels my fire. When I meet fellow entrepreneurs, I immediately identify with the barrage of questions that comes with launching a new business. Am I good enough? Do I have what it takes to be a stand-out success? If you didn’t ask these questions and more, I would ask, why not? Procrastination is a dangerous destroyer of life, hopes, and dreams. Too many people live with potential wealth but lower income, giving in before giving back, and folding in the towel to a wonderful life, because they have procrastinated on the things that could have moved them forward. It's highly likely that a habit of procrastination also looks different from one person to the next.

That Everyone Wants To Work With Annie Gibbins

emale CEOs remain a rare commodity. And it’s time for drastic change. Certainly, we are seeing more women fill executive leadership roles, but few are handed the baton when it comes to feeding the bottom line. Did you know that only 4.6% of the Global 500 CEOs are women? In the US, this number has hit a record high, with 8.3% of Fortune 500 CEOs listed as female leaders! It is clear that we still have a long way to go. With the pandemic severely denting the gender C-Suite, it feels a little like, ‘one step forward, and twenty reforms back’. If you haven’t guessed it already, I am a passionate thoughtleader and ‘fempreneur’ when it comes to healthily disruption of stagnant thinking. I am a progressive CEO, who is inspired to support women like me. Women, who have raised a

re you currently working or looking to start a new career? If so, you should consider starting a side hustle. Side hustling is a great way to get some extra cash without having to quit your day job. Side hustles are a great way to supplement your income outside of your full time job. They can also help pay off student loans, save for retirement, and build up your savings account. As women, we often juggle multiple roles at once - wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and neighbour. While juggling these responsibilities is tough, we believe that it’s important to balance our professional lives with our personal ones. As such, here are some tips for balancing a successful career and family life. Is it really possible to juggle motherhood and business at the same time? Many mothers

Working from home can offer many benefits. Yet it can also come with some drawbacks.

I have learned that I cannot do everything at once. I have to learn to say no to certain projects and tasks if they don't fit in my schedule. One of these is having less interaction with colleagues. If you're a mom who wants to balance both, try asking for flexible hours and see what happens. How does being a mother affect my career? Should I quit my job and become a stay at home mom? Or should I continue working full time?

There are some women who want to quit their jobs to stay at home and raise kids. Others prefer to continue working part time or full time until they decide to have children.

Is It Ever Too Late To Reinvent Your Brand? Sara Blaney

H

ow would you define your personal brand? Are you fully aware of what makes you unique? What is your personal brand? Branding is the art or science of creating a memorable identity or image for a company, organization, individual or product. Many brands are now being reinvented to meet customer expectations. The question is, do you really know who you are? If you want to reinvent your brand, you need to develop a clear vision, mission and purpose. This will give you direction and focus. And once you’ve decided your brand positioning statement, you can start building out a marketing strategy that aligns with your brand promise.

Are you looking for ways to reinvent your brand or rebrand your company? People often look for new companies to partner with because they want something fresh and exciting. This is why startups are always looking for partners who can bring value to their businesses.

Rebranding is a great way to refresh your image and create excitement around your brand. The key to success is finding the right partner who can take your product or service to the next level. Do you want your company or brand to stand out from competitors? If yes, then you should consider reinventing your brand. This involves creating new strategies, taking advantage of new technologies, and building a better customer experience. When companies create a new brand, they often rely heavily on their existing designs and logos. While these items are important, they might not always reflect the company’s true values. For example, Apple has changed its logo several times over the years. A great way to reinvent your brand is by using video marketing. In other words, instead of relying solely on text and images, brands can now take advantage of video. Video marketing allows businesses to connect with customers and prospects through a range of mediums, such as blogs, social media platforms, websites, mobile apps, and more.

Is there anything special that you can do or say that makes your message stand out from the crowd? What are some of the things that you do differently that would help your audience connect to your brand? The word 'brand' has become ubiquitous throughout our society. Everyone talks about brands and how they want to create their own. As consumers, we constantly look for ways to differentiate ourselves from other companies. Your brand image is the sum total of the messages you communicate to your customers. If you don't get these right, it can damage your reputation and even cost you dearly. Here are some ways to reinvigorate your brand. Branding is a critical part of every company, no matter the size or industry. It defines who you are and what you stand for. Rebranding is not always necessary. Sometimes companies change their name because they want to better reflect their current identity. Either way, it's never too late, or too clumsy to reinvent your brand.

Why Thinking Inside the Box Can Save Lives Ally Hensley ALLY HENSLEY IS AN AUTHOR, SPEAKER, AND GLOBAL AMBASSADOR IN WOMEN'S HEALTH AND HAPPINESS. ALLY HAS WRITTEN FOR LEADING PUBLICATIONS ON MENTAL HEALTH, INFERTILITY, BODY POSITIVITY, AND HAS BECOME A REGULAR MEDIA INTERVIEWEE, AND SPEAKER ON TOPICS LINKED TO HEALTH, WELLBEING AND CREATING CONTENT THAT ATTERS.

hen we think of animation, we picture illustrations and digital storyboards coming to life. When a person shares exciting news in a happy state we say, “don’t they look animated?” Now, the phrase ‘re-animate’ has an entirely different meaning in the world of medicine — to bring a person back to life.

Medical enthusiast, Dr. Natalie Kruit is exploring a newfound technology that is set to take Sydney (and Australia) by storm. After completing a degree in Psychology and Nursing, the mother of two was determined to take it one step further. When her heart led her to complete a medical degree at the University of Sydney, she soon realised that her role was to shift perspectives as a formidable medic.

WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM | 23

Women's Biz Magazine After spending ten years training to be a specialist cardiac anaesthetist at Westmead Hospital, Natalie qualified as an Anaesthetist, specialising in resuscitation and reanimation. Natalie explained, “It still amazes me how the heart can restart after it stops – the heart is at the core of everything. Without it, things just don’t work”. This is very true, on so many levels. As a self-confessed adrenalin chaser with a desire to help those literally on a cliff’s edge, Natalie rotates as an onboard doctor with NSW Rescue Helicopters. “Being able to save people who would otherwise not make it, is why I do what I do”, says Natalie. “Resuscitation and reanimation is at the pointiest edge of medicine. As a doctor, this is ultimately what we strive for. To save lives”. During a twelve-month traineeship in the UK, she received specialist training in a new and ground-breaking piece of technology, Cardiohelp.

Natalie describes Cariohelp as the tech-box that increases the chances of survival tenfold. This ‘box’ performs Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The ECMO procedure — otherwise known as the E-CPR technique — is a digital device that can drain all the blood from a patient, pump it into a machine, oxygenate the blood, remove the waste, and pump it back into the patient. All whilst their heart and lungs are essentially failing. In the early 1970’s, ECMO research began with adults but quickly turned to newborns with breathing problems. Dr Robert Bartlett, the creator of ECMO successfully treated the first newborn in 1975 in Irvine, California. Now, this technology can be seen around the world. With a rise in respiratory patients due to the Coronavirus pandemic this technology is needed more than ever. A specialist hospital in France has seen an increase from 20 patients per month to a further (and frightening) two hundred

24 | WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

admissions needing this lifesaving treatment. Seeing a surge of patients admitted for this treatment, the specialist French team who coined the first hospital to house ‘The Reanimation Department’, continue to perform this ground-breaking procedure. When a heart stops, there is a 5-8% chance of survival if cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) does not work in the first twenty-minutes. For the last seven years, E-CPR has been active in hospitals, increasing the survival rate by 33%. But, for every minute in cardiac arrest after thirty-minutes, there is a 2.5% mortality rate increase. The recent landmark ‘ARREST’ trial has demonstrated a 100% survival rate if the patient is on ECMO in less than 30 mins. This is game changing! Natalie — the only doctor in Australia equipped to perform pre-and in-hospital reanimation using this device — questioned, ‘‘how can we use this technology to reanimate life on the streets of Sydney?”.

December 2022

She now wants to take this procedure into the city’s busy metropolis — especially as this can be hard for emergency response vehicles to navigate. “If we can do this on any walkway, we can up the chances of survival by a staggering 50%,” she predicts. “When the next ‘000’ call comes in, I want to see this technology onboard with a doctor equipped to use it”. As a humanitarian in medicine, Natalie’s passion is clear.

“Walking into a room offering hope to patients and their families when all hope has been lost is everything,” she says. “When

the local hospital has exhausted all other treatment, this technology can alter that.” Natalie says critical care is simply her passion — and it’s never more important than in the wake of a pandemic.

at the forefront of a campaign to raise both awareness and funds to support this medical trial with each device costing $250k. “Every researcher and health care professional will advocate for a treatment close to their heart, but this device is for the heart,” she says. “This will save so many more lives! My job now is to convince my peers why”. As a medical entrepreneur, Natalie is inspired to integrate cutting-edge technology at the curbs and on the cliff topsof Australia. As the only doctor in Australia trained to perform this procedure outside of a hospital setting, Natalie is certainly determined – and reanimation just became a lot more life-like.

“One patient of mine had coronavirus,” says Natalie “She was supported with this technology for six weeks. It never came off. The machine essentially was a digital lung and until her body recovered, we continued this treatment. Now she practices Zumba five times a week”. To save Sydneysiders at the scene of a Cardiac Arrest, this technology doesn’t come without its challenges. Natalie is

The Power of

Saying

'YES!' By Assandra Plough

H

ow many amazing things have happened to you because you had the roaring courage to say, “yes”? How many times have you felt deflated and unfulfilled because you said, “no”? The power of saying “yes”, whilst sometimes scary, can be the most liberating word in our entire orbit. Here are my tips and tricks on why the word ‘yes’ can be a deal-breaker to a great life: A YES mindset: The first thing I want to talk about is how we need to change our way of thinking. We have been conditioned to think negatively. When we do not get what we want, we tend to think something bad happened. Instead of saying “I did not get what I wanted”, we should say “I got what I deserved”. If we look at the world around us, we can see that everything happens for a reason. We may not understand why things happen, but they always do. So instead of being upset over not getting what we want, we should focus

on what we deserve. Be grateful: When we are grateful, we are happy.

Gratitude changes our perspective and gives us a positive outlook on life. We should always be thankful for what we have. We should never take anything for granted. Even if we do not have much, we still have something. Take responsibility: We cannot blame others for our problems. We need to accept full responsibility for our actions. No matter what someone else does, we are responsible for our own actions. We should not point fingers at others and

26 | WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

make excuses for ourselves. We should learn to take ownership of our mistakes. Do not give up: If we keep trying, we will eventually succeed. We should not give up easily. We should try again until we get what we want. If we fail, we should not give up. We should try harder next time. Believe in yourself: We should believe in ourselves. We should know who we are and what we can accomplish. We should believe in our abilities and talents. We should not let anyone tell us otherwise. Stay focused: Our minds are powerful tools. We should use them wisely. We should stay focused and not allow distractions to pull us off track. We should stay focused on what we want and not lose sight of our goals. Do you want a successful and happy life? I think we both know the answer to that!

ducation is knowledge and life skills are how we apply what we know. Education is an exchange of information, while life skills are actionable, practical, and applicable to real world situations. Life skills are developed through experience and practice. A person who has not been taught the skill of cooking may have no idea how to cook, but if they were given enough time and instruction, they would eventually become proficient at cooking. Education is simply learning facts and figures; it does not teach us how to act in the real world. Life skills are learned through experience and

Gender and Equality For Women and Girls By Isobel Levvy

G

irls and Women have been historically under-represented in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In fact, only 25% of students enrolled in high school science courses are female, and only 17% of engineering graduates are female. Gender inequality has many negative consequences for society. Boys and men dominate positions of power and influence, whereas women and girls are often denied access to opportunities and resources. Gender equality is critical for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the United Nations. By 2030, the UN aims to eliminate gender inequalities and empower all people. Gender equality is not just about having equal representation at work; it’s about having equal opportunity for education and training. Girls and women make up half of the world’s population. Yet they still face significant barriers to entering careers in STEM fields. Even though women are more likely than men to

graduate college, they earn less money after graduation. As a result, women are often forced to choose between their career ambitions and family responsibilities. Girls and women who pursue higher education are often discouraged from pursuing STEM related fields. If we do not provide young girls and women with opportunities to learn about and explore these subjects, we risk losing them to other fields altogether. Without gender equality, our future generations will lack the skills necessary to tackle the challenges ahead. There are many ways to help improve gender equality for girls and women. You can start by encouraging your child to consider studying STEM fields. You can encourage girls and women to pursue careers in STEM fields. Encourage them to pursue leadership roles in organisations and companies where they can contribute to solving problems and making change. So, how can you do your part to keep the conversation going?

1. You can also donate to organisations that promote gender equality.

2. You can vote for political candidates that advocate for gender equality.

3. Lastly, you can take action by volunteering in organisations that promote gender equality and helping solve issues facing girls and women around the globe.

Is Imposter Syndrome

Hijacking Your Success? By Marcy Hutch

T

he term ‘Imposter Syndrome’ was coined by Psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes in 1983. It describes a feeling of doubt about one's abilities and self-doubt. People who suffer from impostor syndrome tend to have a negative view of themselves, believing they do not deserve success. They fear that their accomplishments were only luck and feel unworthy of recognition. Impostor syndrome is a condition where you feel like you're not good enough, smart enough, capable enough, etc. You feel like you've been tricked into thinking you're an impostor. In addition, people suffering from impostor syndrome often believe that others perceive them as frauds, and they may even become defensive when asked about their achievements. They may also experience anxiety or depression, and they may spend much time trying to prove their competence.

However, overcoming Imposter Syndrome is not for the faint hearted. We have to realise that if we're feeling like we're an impostor, we probably aren't. Our confidence isn't low enough for the situation to be accurate.

I am often asked what my favourite topic is. I love talking about imposter syndrome and how it’s not just something we should get over, but something that we should embrace. So, why should we embrace Impostor Syndrome? The first step towards overcoming any issue in our lives is acknowledging that it exists at all. If we don't acknowledge something then we can never move forward. Many people view impostor syndrome as a negative trait, but it's actually quite positive.

32 | WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

People who deal with impostor syndrome tend to do things like become obsessed with perfectionism (excessive concern about making mistakes), avoid situations where they might fail, and try to create unrealistic expectations of themselves. As they say, comparison is the thief of happiness. When we compare ourselves to others, we begin to feel inadequate. We start to believe that we're not good enough. So we stop trying. And that's when we really start to feel like impostors. So, when we feel like we're an imposter, we tend to act like one. We avoid taking risks. We avoid challenges. We avoid being vulnerable. We avoid doing anything that could make us look bad.

How To

Globally Inspire Women By Beth Noble

A global mindset means being aware of the world around us and not just focusing on our own little bubble. We need to look at what’s going on in the rest of the world and how we can help out.

B

e mindful about how much plastic we use, how many times we recycle, and how many animals we kill. There are many ways to be environmentally conscious, but it starts with awareness. Communication is everything. If we want to change the world, we have to communicate! We need to share our ideas, thoughts, and opinions with others. The way we talk to each other influences the way people think, feel, act, and react. So be sure to keep your conversations positive and uplifting. #Education helps individuals understand their surroundings

and learn how to adapt to them. We need to educate ourselves on different cultures, religions, and beliefs so we can respect and appreciate everyone else. Also, be sure to go to school and get educated on things that interest you. You never know where it might lead you. Forging global friendships is no longer a sci-fi whacky idea. When we make friends with people who live outside of our country, they teach us about their culture and religion. These relationships allow us to expand our minds and become more open-

minded. Not only that, but we gain insight into their lives and how they do certain things. Friendships are very important, especially if you don't have family members living nearby. We should give back to the community. Not only does it benefit the community, but it makes us feel good inside. Community service includes volunteering time, donating money, and helping out those in need. We can volunteer at food banks, homeless shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and anywhere else that needs assistance.

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding In The

Perimenopausal Woman

A

ABOUT Dr. Talat Uppal

Dr Talat Uppal is an obstetrician and gynaecologist, and Clinical Director of ‘Women’s Health Road ‘located in Northern Beaches of Sydney.

bout one in four women will suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) during their reproductive lives, hence it is a common condition. It may be the single gynaecological concern for the woman or may be associated with coexisting pelvic pain (about 50% of this cohort).

Although many times no underlying cause is diagnosed, HMB is often associated with endometriosis, adenomyosis &/ or uterine fibroids.

Heavy menstrual bleeding is defined as ‘excessive menstrual blood loss which adversely interferes with the woman's physical, emotional, social and material quality of life. It is an under recognised and underdiagnosed condition.

As a gynaecologist, I find the management of HMB particularly rewarding as there is ample opportunity to create positive change for women.

Women may at times feel the HMB will resolve spontaneously, especially if perimenopausal. The average age of menopause is 51 years of age, in Australia. In general it is best to proactively manage HMB as one does not know when an individual woman will attend menopause, and the periods, heavy or otherwise will cease. There is significant morbidity associated with HMB, but only from a hygiene point of view, but from a limitation on what women can wear at times, it may create a restriction on how much they can work or go out socially, and it can create profuse anxiety about the increased loss.

38 | WWW.WOMENSBIZGLOBAL.COM

HMB can lead to iron deficiency anemia adding to the fatigue, which may be compounded by the perimenopausal transition the woman is undergoing.

There is a both a diagnostic angle (what is the likely cause of this condition, if any, and it is important to ensure the absence of cancer or a premalignant condition in the uterus) as well as a therapeutic one (how do we ‘close the menstrual tap’ and replace iron losses etc). A pelvic ultrasound is helpful in identifying uterine abnormalities.

December 2022

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER, IS THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. MANY WOMEN, GO UNTREATED AND WORST STILL, GO UNHEARD. THIS IS A VERY REAL, MEDICAL CONDITION AND OPTIONS TO REDUCE BOTH EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL HARDSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE.

• Medication (hormonal/nonhormonal) based • Mefenamic acid (ponstan) decreases both HMB and pelvic pain and inflammation. • Oral contraceptive pill • Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (Mirena) is a T-shaped plastic intrauterine device (IUD) that is placed in the uterus where it slowly releases the hormone and offers both contraceptive and menstrual minimising benefits. Progesterone can also be administered orally, just under the skin (Implanon) or as an injection, including: • Tranexamic acid

"

Some of the treatment options include:

• Radiological based

menstrual bleeding. There are a lot of potential management paths, each with pros and cons, and the aim is to work out the best fit one with you.

• Uterine artery embolisation Surgical based options are available such as: Hysteroscopy (look inside the uterus) and endometrial biopsy (sample the lining to assess what is going on), it may be suitable to remove any polyps or fibroids. • Endometrial Ablation (an alternative to the definitive treatment hysterectomy) • Hysterectomy (mostly a last resort option, if less invasive methods have not worked, when cancer of the uterus is diagnosed or if significantly enlarged/bulky uterus from fibroids/adenomyosis etc) Please make an appointment with your general practitioner if you are experiencing heavy

There is a lot of unnecessary suffering due to HMB and the resultant iron deficiency &/anaemia. I want to create awareness around this as well as call out the taboo around women's health. I am hoping our generation will lead this change that the wellbeing of women is so important, and their struggle with heavy periods should not be minimised, by themselves or by the health systems intended to support them.
