Chidya Secondary School: Sustainable Classroom & Dormitory Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom Competition. With Eddie Fletcher [Peace Corps educator], Rachel Bullock, and Soohyun Park [architecture team] Chidya, Mtwara, Tanzania. 2009 A project that engages students in a rural, Tanzanian, all-boys boarding school as clients and collaborators through a curriculum of architectural investigation. Features locally inspired forms and materials, rammed earth construction, dew collection, rainwater storage, and PV panels to address power and water shortage problems.

“...every time you ask a student (or any Tanzanian) what their favorite food is the response is always ugali or rice. They don’t even say what they eat with it because they don’t have a choice. The same it went with ‘your favorite buildings?’ The response: this one. Why? Because it’s the only building they know besides their own house.

I was amazed with the kids’ ability to start to question their environment, why it is like it is, and to think critically. Thank you for this!” --Eddie Fletcher, Teacher, Chidya Secondary School

Drawing Underground: Emergency Exit Shaft Stair Survey With Maria Clironomos, Dattner Architects. Role: Surveyor, drafting, and project team member. Confidential transit client, New York, NY and NJ. 2011 Architectural survey of 6 previously undocumented transit tunnel exits. Measured and sketched 100+ drawings by hand in 12 days, produced CAD backgrounds according to strict institutional drafting standards, and then created construction documents for lighting, signage, and life safety upgrades.

Parametric Iteration & Fabrication: CATIA Digital Project Drawing Machines Course Final Project, Instructor: Neil Thelen University of Michigan, Summer 2007 A study in parametric modeling and three dimensional programming, many iterations of this simple shelf system can be quickly fabricated in response to parameter inputs. Support pieces are laser cut from clear acrylic at height (x), then heat-bent to angle (o) to fit into laser cut wood bases.

Live the Box Competition, New Jersey Institute of Technology With Alexis Coir, Soohyun Park, and James Sobczek Newark, New Jersey. 2008 A mixed-use, multi-family housing complex which utilizes the abundant resource of reused shipping containers as its basic unit of structure. Perforation on various scales act as a method of humanizing these simple shapes into spaces for living and working. Organically stacked amidst a rigid three-dimensional grid of utility and structural members, units form perforated pods that serve as a private canopy that shelters dynamic public spaces below.

A Study of Value: Mixed-Use Urban Residential Undergraduate Studio 3, Instructor: Sophia Psarra, University of Michigan Toledo, Ohio. 2008 What objects do we value? What is worth keeping or throwing away? What do we covet and why? Through program juxtaposition, a fluttering residential facade, and reuse of forgotten items embedded in resin as a building material, this housing complex introduces a new way of thinking about what Americans value. This project encourages growth in Toledo through a deepening awareness of the place’s own history, from the scale of the forgotten toothbrush to that of an entire community.
