What a truly fun year we’ve had! More fabulous plants than I could ever imagine, a Spring season that seemed to last forever and so many new visitors from near and far! Joyful parties to top all of our previous ones and even charming garden dance performances! Local mosaic artist, Tina Amidon, debuted her incredibly cool “Allegorical Reliquary” Mosaic Chapel dedicated to “women’s hidden work” here on Mother’s Day and we are so thrilled that it now has a semi-permanent home here! Psoralea fleta “Weeping Blue Broom” WEB/CATALOG EXCLUSIVE! Little did we realize when we trialed the seed of this obscure South African Psoralea that we were about to cause horticultural pandemonium! That incognito, little seed quickly grew into a beautiful small tree that had everyone’s lust-o-meter spinning off the dial as it began to bloom! Large, Wisteria-like panicles (to 12” long) of 1” lavender-white sweet pea flowers permeate the air from a good distance with an intense grape soda fragrance. Dianthus ‘Chomley Farran’ As far as I have researched, this is the only remnant available in the U.S. of the type of Carnation or Dianthus so beloved by plant breeders of the 1700s and 1800’s. Sadly, there used to be over 200 of these striped varieties – called “Bizarres” – now lost to cultivation, some with blooms to 4” across! We are happy to help preserve this fantastic purple and rose bi-color, bearing 2.5” slightly scented flowers. Nicotiana alata ‘Lime Green’ Lime green flowers, my friends, combine splendidly with most anything growing in your garden. And these are the old-fashioned, 3’ tall, super branchy kind that are perennial in USDA zones 9-10. Cut back to base foliage and add a bit of compost when they need a jump. Self-sows, too! Cynoglossum amabile ‘Azul’ EXCLUSIVE! Easy, fast and just the richest deep blue “Chinese Forget-Me-Not” I’ve ever seen! We offer well-established plants in fat, 4” square pots. Our plants are removed from their pots, wrapped in moist material and bagged. They are then placed back in their pots and secured by our custom inserts. We prefer our larger size to the long thin containers commonly used by mailorder nurseries. Those slimmer pots conserve nursery space and reduce shipping costs but may result in slower plant recovery and growth after transplanting. Delphinium belladonna ‘Bellamosum’ I use the belladonna Delphiniums in my Spring and Summer gardens (sky blue Delphinium ‘Cliveden Beauty’ p. 16) because they are ultra blue, easy, quick to bloom, they keep re-blooming till Fall and they overwinter well. Good mildew resistance, too! To 3’ tall and nicely multi-branching, they don’t need staking. When the flowers are spent, just cut back to 3” tall, add a little compost and they’ll be back in action! Eschscholzia californica ssp. maritima ‘Coastal Form’ Not the common California poppy everyone is familiar with but a superior coastal form well worth adding to your garden or parking strip. Distinctively bluish and compact feathery foliage forms a lower, tighter mound only 6-8” tall and 12” across that stays neat and tidy throughout the season. It blooms longer than all the rest, too, with cheery, bowl shaped, sunny yellow flowers with showy orange centers. Perfectly partnered here with Nemophila menziesii ‘Snow White’ (online). Eriogonum grande var. rubescens “Red Buckwheat” This hard-to-find, choice and goofproof evergreen “Buckwheat” from the Channel Islands thrives on neglect and prefers dry, clay soil! One of the best butterfly magnets around, it blooms June-October, providing lots of Summer color for your habitat, native or dry garden. Excellent for massing on dry hillsides. Deer resistant! Salvia clevelandii Probably the most desirable of all native Salvias for its attractive color and form and most of all, for its delectable foliar fragrance, which I find very sexy – even at my age – ha! Blooming May and June, its hummingbird-magnet, tubular flowers are held in whorls atop the 3’ x 3’ nicely rounded form. Now here’s the thing – Mr. Clevelandii requires excellent drainage or he gets cranky – so plant him on a slope or provide most excellent drainage. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant. Sun. Low water. Dudleya pulverulenta “Chalk Liveforever” Long-lived and happy with neglect, this giant “Liveforever” forms an elegant, 2’ rosette of ghostly white leaves. In May and July it sends up stout powdery white arching stalks holding many red bellflowers loved by hummingbirds. Use it in a container, tucked into a rock wall or to highlight the front of a rock garden. Good drainage is important and it looks better with a watering about every two weeks. Deer resistant. Keckiella cordifolia “Heartleaf Penstemon” Hummingbirds go bonkers over the lovely scarlet blooms on this CA native evergreen 3-6’ shrub. Bunched at branch ends, 1-2” long tubular flowers bloom May-July. Arching branches work well against a fence or grow it the way Mother Nature does – spilling down a hillside. Collinsia heterophylla “Chinese Houses” Easy and exceptionally bloomy, enchanting in the garden and long lasting as a cut flower, who wouldn’t fall in love with this charming California wildflower? Sweetest purple-lavender and white bicolor, snapdragon-like blooms are held in tiers on multi-branching stems to 2’ tall and across. Adored by bees and a host plant for the Checkerspot Butterfly. Satureja douglasii “Yerba Buena” Well, I just think you have to grow some “Yerba Buena.” CLAY, SAND and SHADE TOLERANT, it also grows under oaks and makes a lush, flat, evergreen groundcover for shade. Fantastic used as a trailer, especially over a shady wall, you can even grow it in a hanging basket. Easy, tough and long lived, it smells heavenly and makes a healthful and tasty, mintlike tea. I REALLY love it when perennials live up to my expectations, last for at least several years and don’t die – don’t you? Here at the nursery, when we get all excited about a new plant we’ve raised from seeds or cuttings, the first thing we do is plant it in several places in the garden and a few sample pots. What we want to find out is this: will this new variety live through the Winter and bloom for a second season? Here in our mild and rainy Winter climate, this is a common reason why a perennial fails to thrive. I find that so many modern, newly introduced “perennials” out there in the garden market just don’t meet our mildWinter test. Or they are wimpy new varieties quickly sent out into the marketplace (pumped up on fertilizers) to look extra bloomy in a 4” pot or gallon – the better for quick nursery sales! The thing is, I don’t believe anyone really tests them to see if they truly behave as perennials in all the diverse zoneage of the U.S.! So we buy them because they are sooo pretty and then find that they turn smooshy in the Winter or completely disappear. Our “gardener’s hope” kicks in and we tell ourselves, “Oh, it’s just being deciduous at the moment. It will

return soon.” By July, we’re feeling totally guilty, thinking we didn’t give our new baby what it needed. “It’s my fault and I’m a crummy gardener!” Well, I’m here to say “No you’re not! It was a crummy-wimpy plant (or not happy with our Mediterranean climate) and you are an excellent gardener!” Here’s an example: This past year I was told by more than a few visitors, including a garden designer, that they won’t even try to plant one of my all time favorite cottagey perennials. They tell me: “Dianthus are just annuals with a really short bloom season and they always die!” Hmmmm. Dianthus? Annuals? How sad! Where did you buy them, I asked? Oh, at the “box store.” Well, there you go! Those are Dianthus chinensis (sold as perennials) that really behave as annuals in the ground. The thing is, these Dianthus are so highly available and bloom so massively in a 4” pot that box store “garden centers” and their suppliers much prefer them for quick sales. Sadly, it’s become harder to find the true, and in my opinion, far superior, truly perennial species at your local nursery and well, out-ofsight is garden memory oblivion for these wonderful, rewarding and highly fragrant plants!

Just look at the amazing Dianthus on page 17. THAT is what a real Dianthus looks like to me! These perennial species live for years in my garden. I don’t know how long they bloom in hotter climates but I do know they bloom Spring thru Fall here. My favorite, longest lived types are D. plumarius, carthusianorum and gratianopolitanus. And this is what you should know: Dianthus love really good drainage, so add in some Dianthus superbus lava rock or better, plant them on the edge of your bed or on a slope. They are not fond of clay but love a little compost. Just a month or two after planting, they’ll burst into a stunning mass of flowers that lasts for months, especially if you cut off spent blooms. In Summer, they’ll go into a rest period unless you cut them back and give them a bit of compost around the base, whereupon they’ll burst forth with all those glorious blooms again! When they finish blooming at the end of Fall, you want to ruthlessly cut back the foliage and stems to no more than 3” tall and 10” across. Don’t worry – they’ll love you for it. In early Spring, give them a 1” dressing of good quality compost and they’ll return more beauteous then before. With proper care your Dianthus will live for years. Last year, while perusing Ebay, I bought some wonderful old mailorder catalogs (circa 1890–1930) that listed more than a hundred fascinating varieties of Dianthus, including vividly striped and polka-dotted “Carnations.” Sadly, almost all have been entirely lost to garden extinction. ‘Chomley Farran’ (p. 3) is reminiscent of these heirlooms that old time “florists” worked so hard to create. I felt so sad after reading about them, I began to worry that some of the varieties we now grow would face eventual disappearance as well. For example, look at this fabulous Dianthus superbus (top, left). When we ordered seed for it over the past few years, we received a totally wrong variety. Certainly NOT the lovely, deliciously scented and long lived species we were familiar with. In fact, it turned out to be an unscented annual often called “Rainbow Loveliness,” which is now being sold as the original perennial species. Luckily, our wonderful long-time propagator, Anni Jensen, still had one of our original mother plants stashed in a corner of the nursery. We now collect our own seed and feel confident we will be able to offer it again in the future. Another wonderful long lived perennial that seems to have lost its mojo to modern “improvements” is Aquilegia vulgaris or the common garden “Columbine.” Formerly 3’ tall x 2’ wide, they seem to have shrunk in both size and vigor. I could blather on about all the depressing details but suffice it say, we’re working on it! In the meantime, I highly recommend Aquilegia chrysantha, caerulea and caerula ‘Krystal’ (online and p. 5) as absolutely fabulous Columbines. Properly tall and highly floriferous with large, scented flowers, they’re certainly the longest blooming, too. Almost to mid-Summer! And if you cut them back to 2” tall after bloom, you’ll often get a second flowering in Fall! Happily, they return reliably each Spring and also self-sow! Real perennials. YAY!

Petunia integrifolia “Wild Petunia” The mother of all petunias! This parent of modern day petunias is perennial in our mild climate, long blooming, scented and an intense rose-magenta with an almost black throat.
