There's so much to tell you about this issue I'm not sure where to begin.

Talking about extraordinary, how about the Blooming Tea Pot Cozy by Laura Coia from Sew Very Easy? How imaginative is that to sew a cozy that blooms before your eyes!? Crocheter Ruth I. Forbes added what looks like stitches laid over the crochet work, turning a simple tea pot cozy into a fascinating one, all the while sharing a unique crochet stitch. For those who enjoy meditating you'll love Édith Choinière's Heart2Heart Mandala Wallhanging with two stitching options: using free motion quilting or the appliquéd version. Explore both! I thought it would be a lot of fun to have Olesya Lebedenko participate with her Purse Pop! A round bag, relatively easy to make she says, using a positive and happy attitude!

I had a lot of fun photographing Jacqueline Grice wearing her Eggli Vest. I love her story about her vest and her extraordinary love of dyeing her own yarns; such a desire for colour! Where do I stop? There's so much more. Kathy McClean's 'LOVE' banner is a project where buttons have joined the appliqué party, like I said, extraordinary is in the details. In the embroidery section of this issue are the cutest, itsy-bitsy needlework projects, you'll want to make more than one. Details abound in the art quilts of Galla Grotto. 17. Using Unique Gem-tak; add the buttons, covering as much or as little of the letters and the flowers as you like. Leave to dry overnight. TIP Gem-tak goes on white and will dry totally clear- so don’t worry about having too much. Note: I totally covered the “O” and the “V” and I applied just a few buttons to the flowers on the bottom. Remember it is your button art so apply as many or as few as you like. TIP When applying the buttons, I started with the larger buttons working down in size. 18. Trim away extra fabric on the back. Optional: I glued double fold bias over the raw edge to give a nicer finish. 19. Hang on your wall and Enjoy! Start making one for each season or use the same techniques to embellish a pillow. Free motion work When doing free motion work start with simple shapes and work up to intricate shapes. Make sure your work is stable with either a hoop or an iron-on stabilizer. Start writing “e’s or O’s”, then move on to flowers and leaves before stippling, so that you can train your brain with the techniques involved along the way. I find it helpful to draw the desired design with a pencil and paper first before going to the machine.

Since I was 10, I wanted to learn about quilting, but I didn’t know anyone that could teach me. It was only in 1984, at 22 years old, that my dream of learning to quilt came true. I had joined the Canadian Armed Forces where I met my husband, an Acadian from Rogersville, New Brunswick. We had received our posting to the Base in Gagetown, New Brunswick and that’s where I learned the basics of traditional quilting. My mother-in-law was my teacher and at the time, no quilting tools were yet available on the market. In 1993, we were posted to Portagela-Prairie, Manitoba. During this period, besides quilting, I created 28

many oil paintings. To meet people in my new community, I exhibited my paintings at the Arts Council in Portage and later, taught classes to meet more people.

In hindsight, painting and Native Art gave me a new perspective that would drive my passion for quilting and designing into a new direction.

Soon after arriving on the air base in Portage, I met two inspiring artists that would share their teachings with me as well as the Native arts and crafts. So for the following three years, Aimée, an Algonquin from the Ottawa region and her husband, a Lakota Sioux from Long Plain, Manitoba, showed me how to work raw hides and make drums, shields, beadwork, moccasins, mukluks, mittens and bags as well as dream catchers and other ceremonial items.

We moved back to Quebec in 1996 and since raw hide is a bit more difficult to find, I returned to my love of quilting. At this point I longed for something different, more challenging. I had found a quilt book from Pam Bono’s collection that was quite different from the traditional quilting style of the day. I contacted her and we became friends over the years. She became my mentor and invited me to visit her in Pagosa Spring, Colorado. She taught me the

Tea pot cozy patterns have been around for many years and most recently there’s been a resurgence in the interest in tea pot cozy patterns. The idea was more on who could make the most whimsical tea pot cozy sort of won the prize, in a manner of speaking. Quite by instinct, here’s my version of a tea pot cozy that does more than just keep your tea hot, it blooms! It will fit any size pot, is reversible, turns into a table topper, has a built-in hot pad, is easy to store and is sew very easy to make. Make it in solid colours that fit your décor or use your favourite printed fabric. 36

Eggli Vest I was inspired to design the Eggli Vest by the mountain in Switzerland of the same name. Eggli is in the Bernese Oberland in Gstaad. As a child I would ski down this mountain so many times. Then as a young adult I actually lived and worked at Restaurant Eggli, which is at the top of the mountain. At night, when the tourists had gone down into the village, I was lucky to enjoy the peacefulness and the mountain view, listening to the wind blowing over the much bigger mountains nearby. Even then, knitting was a big part of my daily life. The colour featured in the Eggli Vest was inspired by my dad. He had a love for breeding Cockatiels and Love Birds ...many of the Love Birds had this teal colour like the one I used to dye the yarn for the Eggli Vest.

NUTCRACKEr TREE Over the years designer Jo Gatenby has admired the various stylized Christmas trees that so many artists and designers have come up with, whirls and swirls, words and themes, and wanted to try her hand at creating her own. A long-time lover of the Nutcracker Ballet, when she saw another artist’s version of this tree, she just had to create her own… The hardest part was turning actual photos of dancers into silhouettes that still provided enough detail to show their characters!

Embroidered Hot Drink Cup Sleeves

The only thing that feels better than holding a hot drink in your hands on a cold day is holding a hot drink wrapped in fabric. The paper drink sleeves are good, but when you start using a fabric sleeve, you’ll never go back. This project gives you one sleeve for every season and they are for hot or cold drinks. Make one or all four using your choice of fabric and threads. The stitches used can be found in most stitch books or online. The sleeves are reversible so pick a fun fabric for the back. This is a great gift idea for anyone who drinks coffee or tea on the go.

Sweet Begonia This delicate piece of embroidered begonia was initially designed using variegated threads, which takes the work out of shading. In these instructions are the colours that should be staggered to give the variegated effect. Feel free to use variegated threads, so you can focus on the stitching. Sweet Begonia uses the general techniques for long and short stitch shading with a few subtle differences. Follow the diagram for the angle and placement of your stitches.
