Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max) In the Kolerevic reading, he described the three different fundamental types of fabrication techniques. The first technique is additive fabrication. As the name suggests, this fabrication technique involves forming by adding material in a layer by layer fashion. The second technique discussed is the formative fabrication technique. This technique utilises heat or steam and apply it onto materials so as to form it into the desired shape through reshaping or deformation, The third technique is subtractive fabrication. This technique is opposite to additive fabrication as instead of adding it layer by layer, it is subtracting a certain volume of material from solids via electro, chemically or mechanically reductive processes.

Week Three

Surface Creation

A 150x150x150mm cube was deconstructed using the Grasshopper script. The deconstruction of the Cube allowed for different iterations of surfaces to be created within the boundaries.

3

Week Four Panels & Waffle

The panels consists of two different geometries. The first geomerty consists of two triangles extruded from a square base. These two triangles were given a picture frame to see how light would interact with these cut outs.

With the Waffle structure, instead of having it spiral up, a more horizontal approach was tested. This was done to experiment with a cave light setting when interacted with. By having the big opening also gives the people a sense of welcoming whilst retaining an impactful impression.

The other geometry is a simple octagon shape to analyse how light can diffuse through the internal spaces via the gap between the geometries.

4

Week Four

Laser Cutting

The process was quite simple. There were different layers dedicated to the different types of cut that was required to be done on the panels. The black layer is the cut through and the red is etching. However, some of the waffle structures were not completely cut through and had to be manually removed from the 1mm mountboard. On the other hand, some of the etching for the panels were completely cut through the ivory card and had to be taped back together to retain its original shape.

5

Week Five

The approach to this task was how it would function in a realistic context. A interactive pavilion was chosen to base the design upon. Dodecahedron was first trialed but the boolean result was not angular to fit a pavilion. An icosahedron was trialed and the booelan result was much more angular. The resulting of the icosahedron was multiple flat faces, in order to cretae a more intimate dwelling between the spaces, the weaverbird cumulation command was given to the icosahedron resulting in different private and open areas.

6

Week Five

Isometric

This Sculpture was created with the inspiration of the entrance of the Tokyo Plaza. The shape was created from subtracting multiple scaled icosahedron that was extruded using weaverbirds cumulation command. This resulted in a overhang that can act as a shading area whenever necessary. The multiple dwellings that were created from the extrusions gave way to multiple private and open spaces for groups or individual.

7

Week Six Task 01

Comment on the choices you have made while iterating on task 1. Which versions your chose to develop and why? Different iterations of the surface was explored. Different geometrical and pictureframe patterns were also explored. This was then further explored using variuous grid attractions.

Week Six Task 02

Task 02 Matrix Comment on the choices you have made while iterating on task 2. Which versions your chose to develop and why? Different grid attractions were explored to manipulate the initial boundary box grid. This was then further developed by adding different shapes to the centroid of each boundary box. A scaling factor was added on resulting in the final design,

Final Isometric Views

10

Appendix Process Task 1

1. Multiple surfaces were created using the different combinations generated from Grasshopper.

2. Different Geometrical shapes were paneled onto the selected surface to explore how the differents hapes and cutout will affect the lighting conditions inside the waffle structure,

11

Appendix 3. Create a waffle structure of the selected surface using Grasshopper.

4. Unroll panels and waffle structure onto appropriate template to be laser cut on the Fablab.

12

Process

5. Assemble the structure.

13

Appendix Process Task 2

1. The 150x150x150 cube was manipulated with various grid attractors

2. Shapes were added in to explore the different centroidal parts of the manipulated grid.

14

3. Dodecahedron and Icosahedron were explored using weaverbirds cumulation tool and scaling factor

4. Desired factor and scaling was chosen and Icosahedron was subtracted from the 150x150x150 cube and 1/8 of the cube that best represent the form was extracted.

15

5. Ensure that the extracted cube is a closed mesh and submit it for 3D printing.

Inspiration The way the Serpentine Pavilion Gallery designed by Libeskind guides the crowd through the structure gave me inspiration to design my waffle structure that opens up, welcoming visitors in a way. The folds that allow occasional light rays also inspired me to interact with my panels to allow certain amount of light into my waffle structure.

Inspiration

The entrance to the Tokyo Plaza gave rise to the inspiration of the geometrical style design. I decided to explore it by flipping the entrance such that people are actually sitting or laying on it.
