Nearly 880 lots of high-quality antique and vintage toys crossed the auction block at Milestone’s Dec. 10 Winter Toy Extravaganza, chalking up $750,000 and making many collectors’ Christmas dreams come true.

Fueled by strong international interest, four dozen robots and space toys easily achieved lift off, with an extremely rare color variation of a Yonezawa (Japan) tin windup Diamond Planet Robot leading the group. At 10 inches high, Diamond Planet is the largest of all windup robots produced during the golden era of postwar Japanese toymaking. The 100-percent original robot with a blue body and red arms was offered together with a

high-quality repro box and sold within estimate for $33,210.

From the legendary Masudaya (Japan) Gang of Five series, a 15inch-tall battery-operated Target Robot presented in all-original condition, complete with its correct dart gun with dart. In excellent condition with glossy, colorful lithography and a super-clean battery box, it grazed its high estimate with a winning bid of $14,400.

Japanese toys had a great day overall. One of the most askedabout lots was the very rare Miura tin friction fire truck in bright primary colors with Gigantor Tetsujin graphics on the vehicle’s sides, hood and ladder. “It was an extremely nice example of a

superhero toy that’s all but impossible to find. We knew it would fl Milestone Auctions co-owner Miles King. In fact, the

The Haddon Heights Antiques Center is proud to be marking the 30th anniversary of its founding back on Jan. 15, 1993. In appreciation for their decades of support, customers are invited to visit the shop between Sunday, Jan. 15, and Saturday, Jan. 21, when a purchase in any amount will entitle them to choose a gift that has been donated by one of the dealers.

Barbara Lind, an avid antique collector turned store owner, has seen many changes in the antique business since she took a leap of faith and rented the storefront by the railroad tracks in Barrington, N.J., to turn into Haddon Heights. She has watched prices on particular collectibles rise and fall and rise again. The fear that online auction

sites would render brick-andmortar antique shops obsolete proved unfounded because customers wanted to hold objects in their hands and examine them in person. And even a pandemic that shuttered the shop for several months didn’t keep it down. Customers missed the fun of shopping for vintage finds and returned as soon as the doors reopened.

Loyal customers are one of thekeys to a shop’s success, but so, too, are loyal dealers. Lind has been able to retain a number of dealers for 20 years or more. And she has been able to attract active dealers who offer a variety of antiques and collectibles, from

7.5-inch-long truck with firemen figures nearly tripled its high estimate with a selling price of $11,377.

Marx toys found favor with bidders, as well. A postwar classic with lithography second to none, a battery-operated Hootin’ Hollow Haunted House was not only in pristine condition, it also had all its original working parts and functioned perfectly. When activated, its actions include surprise appearances by a skeleton, vampire, black cat and ghost and its sounds include a howling wind and shaking roof. Accompanied by its original pictorial box, the Haunted House in Milestone’s sale achieved $3,813

against a $1,000-$1,500 estimate.

“This toy is a favorite with Halloween collectors as well as collectors of battery-op toys,” noted King. “There’s always competition when a nice example like the one we sold appears at auction.”

Other Marx toys that surpassed pre-sale expectations included a handpainted prototype of the company’s 1939-40 New York World’s Fair “crazy car” (named for its eccentric action), which rose to $7,995 against a $3,000-$5,000 estimate, and a 16-inch windup “Blondie’s Jalopy” comic character toy in exceptional all-original

Also noteworthy was a postwar comic character production from Marx’s Japanese subsidiary, Linemar. Known as “Mechanical Popeye,” the 5inch-tall windup toy depicting the scrappy cartoon sailor was irresistible when paired with his rare, vibrantly-hued original box. All original, it easily surpassed high estimate at $4,428.

The moment Milestone’s specialists laid eyes on one

particular German toy, a Distler 8-inch tin windup Directional Policeman car, they knew they had a winner. “None of us had ever seen one before, and that’s saying a lot, considering how many toys we’ve all handled over the years,” observed King. In all-original condition, the whimsical vehicle with a comical, bug-eyed driver was profusely decorated with graphics of cars, motorcycles, people, dogs and more. sale was a 19-inch Road Roller with attractive paint and decals. Rated as being in VGExcellent condition, it well outdistanced its $1,500-$2,000 estimate to settle at $6,457. Also, many collectors wanted a close-up look at a new/old stock Buddy “L” factory case containing six examples of Model #5628 “Army Transport Trucks with Howitzer and Poly Soldiers.” Each of the 14-inch trucks, with accessories, was secured inside its original individual box, making this nearmint assemblage impossible to pass up. With multiple bidders chasing it aggressively, it sold above high estimate for $3,690.

Three Full Days Of Material On Tap At Pook & Pook Day One Is Dedicated To Schiffer Collection

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Jan. 18, 19, and 20, Pook and Pook will auction over 1,000 lots of antiques and art. Anchored by several major collections, the sale will feature items from many estates, museums, and individuals. Day one is devoted to the collection of Margaret Berwind Schiffer. Day two will feature part two of the American pewter collection of Drs. Donald and Patricia Herr, as well as items from the Packwood House Museum of Lewisburg, Pa. Day three will begin with one of the finest groups of brass candlesticks ever assembled, the Lear collection of copper-alloy socket candlesticks, and conclude with fine art, silver, and rugs.

A collector, scholar, and author, the late Margaret Berwind Schiffer illustrated many of her pieces in her classic books, representing some of the best examples of Chester County furniture and

folk art. Rarities are found throughout the collection, such as an important Harrisburg silkon-gauze needlework sampler dated 1807, wrought by Elizabeth Finney at Mrs. Leah Meguier’s School. There is also a group of Charles II stumpwork. Nearly all examples of early Chester County furniture styles are represented: a Chippendale walnut tall case clock, ca. 1775, has works signed by B. Chandlee, Nottingham, with an inlaid case adorned with pinwheel and tulips. A Chester County Queen Anne walnut tall chest, ca. 1760, is decorated with arched herringbone inlaid drawers and raised side panels. Another highlight is a Chester or Lancaster County Chippendale “parrot” inlaid blanket chest, ca. 1760, featured alongside a miniature version, ca. 1810. One of several fine spice chests, a rare William and Mary cedar chest, ca. 1725, is decorated on all sides with compass inlays of potted tulips and is most likely an early example from Philadelphia. Eighty lots of exceptional English and Dutch Delftware is headlined by four English plates of Chester County interest, all dated 1738 and initialed WG for William Gregg. These plates belong to a small group of known Delftware

plates made for prominent Quaker families from Chester County.

The Herr pewter collection is headlined by a trove of rare Philadelphia finds; a pewter flagon, attributed to Johann Philip Alberti, is engraved “Georg Kirchen, 1763.” Also attributed to Alberti is a pearshaped footed teapot, ca. 1770. Pieces by famed Philadelphia pewterer and patriot William Will include an elegantly proportioned teapot, ca. 1780, a quart mug, covered sugar, and a creamer, all bearing his touch mark. A rare teapot, late 18th century, is possibly the only example known bearing

the Love touch mark. Another expected highlight will be a Lancaster ciborium, ca. 1765, bearing the touch of Johann Heyne, and a Peter Derr (Berks County 1793-1858) bronze spoon mold and pewter spoon, impressed “P Derr 1820.”

Artwork includes an oil-oncanvas rendition of Gilbert Stuart’s 1806 “Washington at Dorchester Heights,” attributed to Jane Stuart (American 181288). The youngest daughter of Stuart, Jane became wellknown in her own right and executed numerous copies of her father’s works, most of George Washington. A copy of the same painting by Jane is in

the collection of Mount Vernon. A mid-19th century copy of Gilbert Stuart’s 1806 “Athenaeum Porthole portrait

of George Washington” is being sold together with its original gilt frame.

The Packwood House Museum was the creation of Edith and John Fetherston. The museum’s collection ranged from southeast Asia to central Pennsylvania. Items of regional interest include a 1790 vellum deed for lots of land in Louisborough (Lewisburg); a 1789-1826 journal of gunsmith Samuel Baum, of New Berlin, Union County; an H. Kockler Lewisburg percussion combination gun; and a Union County redware jar and cover, 19th century, attributed to James Nieman and/or Adam Maize. The museum was also known for its Pennsylvania quilts, 51 of which are featured in the sale.

The collection of F.R. “Bud” Lear III features an assemblage

of 55 lots of copper-alloy candlesticks manufactured before 1700. Illustrating the history of development and relationships between forms across Europe, the grouping is composed of notable and one-of-a-kind examples. A rare brass candlestick in the form of a standing Martin Luther, probably Nuremberg, first half of the 17th century, is the only known example of its kind.

Pennsylvania artwork sold on day three includes a Harry Bertoia Sonambient steel and brass wire sculpture. A highlight is an Andrew Wyeth (American 1917-2009) watercolor titled “The Lookout or Borestone Mountain,” signed lower right and listed in the Andrew Wyeth catalog raisonne. A copy of a letter written by Betsey Wyeth discussing the painting

accompanies the lot, which was purchased by Rosalie Downing from The Christmas Shop in the Hotel DuPont, ca. 1950.

An American sheet iron weathervane, early 20th century, features a sow and her two piglets with a heart-shaped directional. Featured in the Nissenson and Jonas work, “The Ubiquitous Pig,” with a quote from Harry Truman, “No man should be allowed to be President who does not understand hogs.”

Mocha from the estate of Robert J. Bergelson includes a mocha bowl with dendritic tree/seaweed decoration, together with the hardbound book, Rickard, “Mocha and Related Dipped Wares, 17701939,” and illustrated on its cover.

Early Redware Dish Attributed To Peter Bell (1775-1854) Sells For $39,000

Many readers of Antiques & Auction News follow the marketplace for antiques. Early stoneware and redware pottery is among the most popular categories within the field of American antiques. The foremost auction house in the country specializing in this field is Crocker Farm, based in Sparks, Md.

In November, at its third sale of the year, the company sold an important early Shenandoah Valley redware dish, inscribed “JE / his Dish / 1808,” attributed to Peter Bell, Hagerstown, Md. The 14.5inch-diameter tapered dish with rounded rim, profuselydecorated on the interior with a central flowering daisy plant in cream and dark-brown slip, surrounded by a cream slip

band with wavy brown stripe covered in a clear lead glaze over an orange clay ground, brought $39,000.

This was important due to being one of the finest surviving works attributed to the early Hagerstown, Md., and Winchester, Va., potter, Peter Bell (1775-1854). Only two examples of pottery are known bearing Bell’s impressed maker’s mark, “P.

BELL,” yet a number carry an attribution through stylistic attributes, including the distinctive “grape cluster” or “fish scale” motifs like those found on this dish. This example was attributed to Peter Bell in the pioneering book by Alvin H. Rice and John Baer Stoudt in 1929, “The Shenandoah Pottery,” and is pictured on page 266. Not many

The second day ranged from pottery, china, children’s tea sets, and glassware folk art woodenware to include Anri carvings, German kugels, metalware, lightning rods, quilts, and rugs.

Highlights included a Christian Eby Chippendale walnut tall case clock and a Jacob Eby Hepplewhite inlaid cherry tall case clock. The Christian Eby clock sold for $10,200 to the Manheim Historical Society. The local historical society also bought a Jacob Eby Sheraton mahogany shelf clock from a Hess auction in June. The Jacob Eby tall case clock sold for $6,250 to a buyer in Ohio.

Christian Eby was a clockmaker in Manheim from 1793 until his death in 1803. His younger brother, Jacob, was a clockmaker until 1828.

The kugels were an exciting part of the sale, with one selling for $2,500. It was a German red glass Oval B cluster of grapes in excellent condition. The 27 lots of kugels were consigned by one consignor from Delaware.

One final lot of note was an Aaron Zook mixed media diorama, which depicted an Amish planting scene, and sold for $6,875. Aaron was the identical twin to Abner. They were born in Lancaster, Pa., and both were well-known artists of large, threedimensional sculptures.

All prices reported include the buyer’s premium. The next catalog auction will be the single owner collection of the

late Darlene Moser scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14, beginning at 9 a.m.

china and glassware to jewelry and silver, toys and ephemera to holiday decorations.

The Haddon Heights Antiques Center, Camden County’s oldest antique center, started with 35 dealers in one space on the first floor. Then it expanded to the second floor. And, finally, it took over another storefront next door. Today, there are over 50 dealers.

Winter is a great time to come in out of the cold and visit the Haddon Heights Antiques Center. The store is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Friday evening. It is conveniently located just off I-295 and the White Horse Pike. For GPS purposes, use 531 Clements Bridge Road, Barrington, N.J.

Shenandoah Valley redware objects with an early date such as 1808 have survived, also making this particular example rare. In good condition, with a few minor rim chips and base chips, it previously sold in 2007 at the major sale for Dr. and Mrs. Donald Shelley through Pook & Pook for $18,720.
