An auction of 270 never-beforeoffered historic California Gold Rush sunken treasure artifacts attracted nearly $1 million in sales from more than 7,500 registered bidders from across the United States and in six other countries. The recovered jewelry, mid-1800s clothing, glassware, and other items were retrieved from the legendary “Ship of Gold,” the S.S. Central America that sank during a voyage to New York in 1857.

fabled ship are offered in a public auction on Feb. 25.

Highlights of the Dec. 3 auction included the unique wooden lid to a Wells Fargo & Co. treasure box that that sold for $99,600; the purser’s keys to the ship’s treasure room, where tons of Gold Rush coins and assayers’ ingots were stored, brought $103,200; and the oldest known pair of miner’s heavy-duty work pants sold for $114,000, the highest price ever paid for jeans.

“There has never been anything like the scope of these recovered artifacts which represented a time capsule of daily life during the Gold Rush. The auction took over eight hours for only 270 lots because of the exceptionally large number of bids,” said Fred Holabird, president of Holabird Western Americana Collections, the auction company that conducted the sale live in Reno, Nev., and online on Dec. 3.

Holabird advised there will be only one more opportunity to acquire previously unavailable S.S. Central America artifacts when the last items recovered from the

“Those miner’s jeans are like the first flag on the moon, a historic moment in history. We can precisely date them because we know the Central America sank during a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 12, 1857. There are no earlier five-button fly jeans in existence,” said Dwight Manley, managing partner of the California Gold Marketing Group, consignor of the recovered artifacts.

The auction catalog contained an extensive explanation of why the jeans may have been made by or for Levi Strauss Company. The miner’s pants and early Brooks

Brothers undershirts with the company’s famous emblem were discovered in 1991 in the firstclass passenger trunk of merchant and Mexican-American War military veteran John Dement of Oregon.

Two of the three recovered Brooks Brothers shirts were offered in the auction and sold for $3,240 and $1,320, respectively. A third shirt will be in the February auction. An 1849 edition of the novel, “The Count of Monte Cristo,” also found in Dement’s trunk, sold for $3,720.

A treasure trove of 1850s fashion recovered from the trunk of first-class passengers Ansel and Adeline Easton of San Francisco included men’s scarves, bow ties, cravats, collars, dress shirts, vests, jackets, dress pants, and socks, as well as women’s bloomers, dresses, evening gowns, and gloves.

Winning bids on those items ranged from $100 to $200 for pairs

of socks to $4,800 for a shirt made for the Eastons’ friend, William C. Ralston, co-founder of the Bank of California, which was also found in the trunk. It apparently was being taken to New York to have more shirts made for Ralston.

“Ansel and Adeline Easton were San Francisco ‘royalty’ on their honeymoon trip to New York when the legendary S.S. Central America sank in 1857. Adeline survived in a lifeboat; Ansel clung to debris in the water for hours after the ship sank until he was rescued by the crew from another ship,” said Holabird.

“Ansel was a wealthy maritime provisions supplier, and Adeline’s brother, D.O. Mills, was a cofounder of the Bank of California,” he explained.

Bidders also paid $26,400 for a ca. 1851 gold watch cover depicting a miner and Yerba Buena, which later became San Francisco; $14,400 for a ring made with a large gold-in-

The pioneering landscapes of Romanian-Israeli painter Reuven Rubin, especially those painted in the 1920s during a time when the international art world was rapidly changing, are highly sought after. Considered Israel’s most famous artist, Rubin (1893-1974) was Israel’s first ambassador to Romania and visited New York City often.

From an old New York family that befriended the artist in his early days as part of New York City’s art scene in the late 1920s come four artworks by the artist, starring at Clarke Auction Gallery’s Sunday, Jan. 22, auction, beginning at 10 a.m. While the auction has nearly 400 lots, running the gamut

Red 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe With Rare Split Rear Window Sells For $129,800 In Canada

Collection Of Gas Pumps, Petroliana Advertising, Automobilia, Soda Signs And Old Toys Shows Strengths In Marketplace

A bright red 1963 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with the rare and highly desirable split rear window roared off for $129,800 in an online-only Automobiles, Advertising and Toys Auction held Dec. 3 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd.

The runner-up lot was a 1940s double-sided porcelain Chrysler Plymouth Fargo dealer sign that made $29,500. Prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium.

All 241 lots in the sale were from the lifetime collection of the late Gary Archer, a collector who sought out gas pumps, petroliana advertising, automobilia, soda signs and old toys. “The family reflected on what Gary paid for certain pieces. It was like winning the lottery,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Overall the auction was seen as a great success.”

Miller said that as the market for petroliana (gas station collectibles) matures, buyers are becoming increasingly more sophisticated. “The results in this auction showed that rarity and condition are trending as the most important predictors of price. While the top 20 percent crushed our highest expectations, the more common material was flatlined at best,” further

observed Miller.

Auto buffs are familiar with the ’63 “split-window” as one of the most rare and coveted Corvettes out there. Archer imported his from the U.S. in 1983 and stored it as an investment in a dry, heated garage. Prior to that, the car received a cosmetic restoration that included a color change to red and interior upgrades. The car more than doubled its $60,000 high estimate.

The Chrysler Plymouth Fargo dealer sign was produced for the Canadian market and measured 44.5-by-41.5 inches. The sign blasted through its pre-sale estimate of $4,000-$6,000. Following are additional highlights from the auction, which grossed $478,018 and attracted 382 registered users, who placed a combined 6,478 bids. One

The other was a Red Indian (“Gasoline / Motor Oils”) fivefoot single-sided porcelain sign (Canadian, 1930s), marked “The W. F. Vilas Co. Limited, Cowansville, P.Q.” Both signs finished at way above their estimates.

A Supertest (“Canada’s All-Canadian Company”) 1940s double-sided porcelain service station sign, round, five feet in diameter and in the original ring, marked “P & M Orillia,” sold within estimate for $10,030. Also, a larger Supertest double-sided porcelain sign, also round, six feet in diameter and made in the 1950s, in the original aluminum ring with hangers, with only minor porcelain loss, brought $5,900, which was also within estimate.

A Canadian 1950s Gulf Service Station double-sided porcelain sign in the original aluminum ring, 68-by-74 inches, fetched $7,670; a Canadian 1920s Gray-Dort Automobile dealer sign, single-sided tin and embossed, 11.75-by-35.5 inches, also brought $7,670; and a Canadian 1960s GMC Trucks double-sided vacuum formed plastic illuminated sign, tagged “TEK Plastics

area of the market that has nose-dived in popularity over the last several decades, with items bringing a fraction of what they once did because of changing styles and tastes.

furniture and what a salad fork is. Perhaps not as many as in the past, but they are not completely gone as a generation.

One of the reasons for the rise in popularity of antique brown furniture in the 1970-90 period was that new brown furniture was not always of the highest quality, nor did it hold its value in the collectibles market. Laminate veneered furniture simply would not last and had limited secondary value. To the contrary, a Sheraton chest of drawers could be purchased for $1,500, and it would not only physically hold up but would also probably keep, if not grow in value. This changed when we began to see a rise in quality bench made and then commercially

The changing taste of Millennial and Gen Z buyers also has impacted the brown furniture market severely. Witness the posting of a popular online article that lists the top items that your kids won’t want. Sterling flatware and brown furniture are pretty highon that list. Now, I have to admit that I do find such generalizing of generations to be wrong. Yes, I am sure that there are 20- to 40somethings who have been raised on plastic furniture with plastic Tupperware to eat off, but, I also know that there are many who grew up at least knowing about brown

I think that we are in a golden period where parents looking for that ideal wedding gift for a young couple could take the newlyweds to Adamstown, New Oxford, Hagerstown, Carlisle, Mullica Hill, or Lambertville and offer to buy them some brown furniture. Let their tastes dictate what they choose, but give them an opportunity to see a range of furniture styles and choices.

An example of which is in a YouTube video that I recently watched. The video featured a millennial couple in their first home. They were in awe of a rather hideous shelf clock from the 1950s. Now every newly married couple in 1957

quartz gemstone; $12,000 for a stick pin with two gold nuggets; and $3,360 for a white ceramic coffee cup decorated with gold lettering, “To My Mother.”

An 1849 Colt pocket pistol sold for $30,000, and three sets of matched brass luggage tags indicating the bags were going from San Francisco to New York via Panama sold for $5,640.

Four black glass beer bottles, some with the remaining dregs of their original contents, were sold for $1,200 to $1,680 each, and a whiskey bottle from the ship’s saloon brought $1,920. A rare medal of the order of Saint Maurice and Saint Lazarus, one of the world’s oldest orders of knighthood, sold for $13,200.

A $20 denomination gold

America got that kind of veneered clock along with a silver plated Paul Revere bowl. The millennial couple was talking about how they had found it in an aunt’s house and what a wonderful antique it was. The house they lived in was not cheap, nor were the decorator goods they had. As such, I desperately wanted to offer to take them out and show the range of good clocks with real personality and style that they could own. Before folks yell and scream that I am being judgmental, let me say that yes, I am being judgmental. The couple could find that clock or table in the antiques world and have something of beauty, quality and rarity that could grow in value.

So maybe we can all plan to work to make 2023 the year of the revival of brown furniture.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts.

Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

coin struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1856 and later stamped with an advertising message by Sacramento, Calif., drug store owner J. Polhemus set a record for one of his counter-stamped coins at $43,200.

The Central America was carrying tons of Gold Rush treasure from San Francisco and the northern California area when she sank 7,200 feet deep in the Atlantic off the North Carolina coast while on a voyage from Panama to New York City. Recovery missions were made from 1988 to 1991 and again in 2014.

Most of the recovered coins and gold bars were sold starting in 2000. The unique items in this auction and the one scheduled for February were kept in secure storage since their

recovery.

Insurance claims for the loss were paid in the 1850s, and the company that discovered and retrieved the treasure starting in 1988 settled with the insurers and their successors in 1998. With court approval, California Gold Marketing Group subsequently acquired clear title to all of that remaining treasure as well as all the items recovered in 2014.

All prices include a 20-percent buyer’s premium.

from jewelry and silver to Asian arts and traditional antiques, the highlight will be Rubin’s artwork.

The story of how Rubin met Hope Weil in 1928 and became a constant in her family’s life for decades is one that, like many other stories, begins a bit serendipitously. Rubin was an up-and-coming artist at this time, having earlier befriended photographer Alfred Stieglitz in 1921, who helped organize the first American show at the Anderson Gallery for the two artists. Hope’s granddaughter, Faith Levene, said her grandparents, Hope and Walter, attended an auction in 1928 in New York City when Hope was 27 and bought their first Rubin painting. She is not positive how her grandmother first knew of Rubin’s work or if she met him before or after the auction. She believes her grandmother may have lived in the same building on the Upper West Side as Stieglitz.

Hope and Walter Weil were art lovers who filled their New York City apartment and an upstate country home in Bedford Village with an eclectic

mix of fine paintings and sculpture as well as a steady stream of bon vivants, friends and family. Walter was a self-made businessman who worked his way up the ranks in the investments business, becoming successful, and Hope was very sociable and enjoyed entertaining, poetry and art.

Four paintings from the family’s collection will cross the block at Clarke’s auction. Painted in 1927, “Road to Safed” is a 32-by-39.5-inch oil-on-canvas, documented in the book, “Reuven Rubin” (1974), and estimated at $250,000-$350,000. This region was a subject matter the artist returned to over the years and is in many of his important paintings.

Granddaughter Faith Levene recalled the family history surrounding her grandparents’ first auction purchase of a Rubin painting. Apparently Walter was unsure of who the artist was and if they should bid, but Hope insisted and won the painting, she said. Immediately afterward, someone attending the auction came up to the couple insisting that they were supposed to buy the painting and offered them double what they paid for it. “My grandfather said, ‘Certainly not, it’s ours,’ and that was the beginning of their relationship with Rubin,” she said.

A self portrait in ink washon-paper (est. $2,000$3,000) is signed and dedicated to Hope and Faith and dated 1940.

Also on offer is an oil-oncanvas landscape depicting three groupings of homes set among trees and mountains (est. $100,000-$150,000). While the 24-by-29-inch painting is untitled and dated, its subject matter is very similar to other Galilean landscapes Rubin painted in the early 1920s, while he was living in Tel Aviv. Here, he embraces a soft Mediterranean color palette to masterfully depict the olive trees, the undulating landscape and the short, boxy

houses that are typically found in this region.

The artist is celebrated for his landscapes as well as his portraits, and this auction introduces a figural painting and a portrait that have been kept in the Weil family for decades. A pen-and-ink drawing with wash in paper, “The Plowman,” (est. $3,000-$5,000) retains a label from the Grace Borgenicht Gallery, New York. The drawing measures 16-by-22

inches. A self-portrait in ink wash-on-paper (est. $2,000$3,000) is signed and dedicated to Hope and Faith. Dated 1940, the drawing measures 17-by-12 inches.

Rubin painted several portraits of Weil family members, and Faith Levene retains her mother’s portrait by the artist, painted in 1928. The artist was a frequent guest in the Weil home and wrote several cards the family still has

today. One written in 1971 reads, “Dear Hope, your charming card gave us both great pleasure and your generous gift to the Princeton Museum is the most __(fascinating?)__ gift you made me for the new year….” The family also donated a Rubin sculpture, “Jacob Wrestling the Angel,” in the 1950sto the Rubin Museum in Israel, according to Levene.

Asked what attracted her

grandmother to Rubin’s art, Levene said she never knew exactly, but her grandmother, who took up bookbinding, was a big collector and traveled around the world a lot, especially in those early days. “She was just a great art lover and evidently fell in love with Rubin’s work, and they became close friends,” she said.

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Union Fire Co. Banquet Hall at 1396 River Road (Route 29), alongside the Delaware River. Ample free parking is available.

Attendees can expect to see a wide variety of items, ranging from political campaign buttons and ribbons for former presidents such as Abraham Lincoln, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, to buttons featuring sports teams and stars, TV personalities, civil rights icons, military heroes, advertising and comic characters, and more.

The gathering will be hosted by the local chapter of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC), a national nonprofit hobbyist association dedicated to preserving political history.

“Our meetings offer a great opportunity for young and old alike to see and learn about real artifacts used by political candidates, protesters through the ages, sports teams, advertising agencies and more,” said Tony Lee, a Titusville resident and president of APIC’s

“Big Apple” Chapter. “Most of these items were created for a short-term use, like an election or a march, and weren’t designed to survive beyond that event. But many did, and perhaps because of their ephemeral nature, they became prized collectibles.”

Admission to the event will be $3 for each adult. Any child 12 years or younger will enter free of charge. To encourage a lifelong love of collecting, each child will receive assorted pinback buttons, free of charge, to start his or her own collection.

Free appraisals will be offered for items brought in by the public. The public may also bring items for the annual auction, with a commission rate of 10 percent of the overall sale for appropriate items.

A Recap Of Heritage Auctions’ $1.45 Billion Year

By every estimation, 2022 was a home run for Heritage Auctions. The auction house recorded more than $1.45 billion in sales in 2022, a record high for the 46-year-old Dallas-based company following 2021’s also landmark results. It also set dozens of significant auction records spanning most of its categories, including one for the world’s most valuable sports collectible when a 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card sold last summer for $12.6 million.

Page 25 from 1984’s “Secret Wars No. 8.” That work, which tells the origin story of Spider-Man’s black costume, remains the world’s most valuable page of original comic book artwork. In November, a hand-colored Calvin and Hobbes Sunday strip from May 24, 1987, sold for $480,000 to set a new auction record for Bill Watterson and his beloved creations. That price also tied the record for the most valuable original newspaper strip ever sold at auction. April’s comics and comic art signature realized a staggering $27,674,844, making it, by far, the most successful comics auction ever held.

item of jewelry at Heritage Auctions. Timepieces, too, saw an uptick in sales in 2022, from $4.58 million to $6.19 million. Clientcollectors also bought more luxury accessories in 2022 than ever, as the category realized $5,831,928 in total sales.

That $1.45 billion does not include the $103.5 million realized for Russian newspaper editor Dmitry Muratov’s Nobel Peace Prize medal, which he sold through Heritage on June 21. Heritage waived its commission, and every cent raised was immediately paid to UNICEF’s humanitarian response to the war in Ukraine.

“This has been a historic, headline-making year for Heritage, and I could not be more thankful for our ever-growing, increasingly younger base of client-collectors nor prouder of our thoughtful, diligent team of specialists,” says CEO and cofounder Steve Ivy. “We’re certainly delighted every time we set a record or exceed consignors’ expectations, and it remains a thrill to connect collectors with their passions, but this year we were also able to give back in ways once unimaginable.

Heritage remains the world’s leading coin and currency auction house, but our expeditious evolution into the world’s leading collectibles auctioneer is something we do not take for granted.”

That total consists of approximately $1.07 billion in auction sales, with the rest constituting private sales brokered by Heritage. A few of the auction records set in 2022 spanned all of the auction house’s more than 40 categories. That includes U.S. coins, which realized more than $310 million in total auction sales, a 21 percent increase over 2021’s record-setting figures.

The comics and comic art category ended the year with more than $195 million in total sales, exceeding 2021’s results by 7 percent. The year got off to a web-swinging start with January’s $3.36 million sale of

The sports category continued to wow in 2022, realizing more than $157 million in total sales. In February, the jersey worn by Mickey Mantle when he played his final game as a New York Yankee sold for $2,190,000, the highest price ever paid at auction for a Mantle jersey. In that same auction, one of seven known ticket stubs from Jackie Robinson’s big-league debut in the spring of 1947 sold for $480,000 to become the most expensive sporting-event ticket ever sold at auction. In July, Indianapolis Colts owner and philanthropist Jim Irsay paid $6.18 million for Muhammad Ali’s World Boxing Council heavyweight championship belt, which Ali earned in his victory over George Foreman in 1974’s legendary Rumble in the Jungle. Then came August’s headlineseizing sale of the Mickey Mantle card that redefined the hobby and industry. The 1952 Topps Mantle, graded a Mint+ 9.5 by Sportscard Guaranty Corporation, sold for a recordshattering $12.6 million, which remains the highest price ever realized at auction for any sports collectible. That wasn’t the lone headline from that event, during which Babe Ruth’s game-used and signed bat dating from 1918 to 1922 sold for $1.68 million to become the most valuable game-used bat ever sold at auction.

The historical category saw remarkable growth in 2022, with total sales realizing more than $36.3 million, a 124-percent jump from 2021’s $16.2 million. This year, Heritage introduced its Historical Platinum events, thoughtfully curated auctions spanning centuries of human achievement. In May, a rocking chair commissioned by President John F. Kennedy sold for $591,000. The most recent Platinum Auction, held at the beginning of December, saw the only known photograph of Marilyn Monroe inscribed to Joe DiMaggio sell for $300,000 to set a new auction record for a signed Monroe photograph. Jewelry shone particularly brightly at Heritage in 2022 as the category saw a 22-percent increase in total sales, from $21.6 million to more than $26.38 million. In September, a .21-carat fancy orangy red diamond shattered estimates when it sold for $1,755,000, nearly 12 times its pre-auction estimate, to become the highest price ever paid for an

The entertainment and music category likewise saw an uptick in sales in 2022, jumping 10 percent from $19.877 million to $21.787 million. Twice this year, Heritage set new records for concert posters, first in April, when a poster from the Beatles’ 1966 Shea Stadium concert realized $275,000, then again in November, when the rarestknown Buddy Holly poster, from “The Day the Music Died,” realized $447,000.

In 2022, Heritage introduced

a new category, VHS and home entertainment, which kicked off with a bang in June, when actor Tom Wilson’s shrink-wrapped copy of his original “Back to the Future” VHS tape sold for $75,000 to become, at the time, the most world’s valuable sealed and graded videotape.

Heritage has long prided itself in being the leading illustration and American art auctioneer. In 2022, the auction house was thrilled to set several records in the category, including ones for author-illustrator Maurice Sendak and artist Shepard Fairey.

On May 11, Sendak’s “Let the Wild Rumpus Start! (Happy Birthday Wild Things!),” painted in 1988 to celebrate the 25th
