The 74th Conference Of The PA Auctioneers Association Annual Event Was Held In Harrisburg On Jan 11 To 14 The 74th conference and trade show of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) took place in Harrisburg from Jan. 11 to the 14. The PAA is one of the largest and most active auctioneer associations in the United States. The association holds its conference once a year in Harrisburg (with local chapters meeting multiple times a year) to host educational seminars, an annual auctioneer competition, an advertising and marketing contest and a fun auction. The PAA is dedicated to making the auction industry stronger. The membership of the PAA is made up of auctioneers, trade members and other auction professionals who are passionate about the auction industry and the auction method of selling.

Well over 100 auction professionals were in attendance, including auctioneers, apprentices, auction students, support personnel, vendors and presenters. During the event, all had access to various educational seminars that will allow them to better serve their buyers, sellers and the industry as a whole. The PAA focuses on educating the auction professional. Continuing education points were available to the many auctioneers who maintain advanced auctioneer certifications or auctioneer licenses held in other states that require ongoing education. Thirteen presenters from around the country offered a wealth of information. Many of the presenters were from the PAA membership itself, including the 2021 president Matt Hostetter, who, along with J. Meryl Stoltzfus, led a “Bid Calling Critique” where auctioneers could bid call and get pointers. Member Dana Balsamo shared her wealth of knowledge about “Identification and Valuation of Quilts,” Sherman Hostetter discussed “Auction Company Management and Structure,” Tim Keller spoke on “Helping Nonprofits and How to Make a Profit,” and Brent Souder discussed how industry experiences, The 2022 Pennsylvania Auctioneer Competition Championship winners relationships, strate(left to right) were runner-up Brian Burke II, champion John Stauffer, gies and truth create top female Katlyn Callahan, and rookie Colin McPeak. “Winslow Homer: Illustrating A Nation” Brings Civil War Era Illustrations To The Muskegon Museum Of Art The Muskegon Museum of Art in Muskegon, Mich., presents a new exhibition, “Winslow Homer: Illustrating a Nation,” which opened Jan. 20. Winslow Homer was one of the most significant American artists of the 19th century, famed for his dramatic depictions of people and nature, as well as his illustrations of day-to-day life and the battles of the Civil War in “Harper’s Weekly,” a New York City-based illustrated magazine that extensively covered the American Civil War. The exhibition features several of Homer’s best known images, including “The Noon Recess,” “Snap the Whip,” “A Sharpshooter on Picket Duty,” and “The Dinner Horn,” a companion image to the MMA’s oil painting “Answering the Horn.” Other works in the exhibition depict illustrations of leisure, work, and the everyday lives of people, as well as dramatic scenes and circumstances. In 1861, “Harper’s Weekly” assigned Homer to illustrate the events of the Civil War, which Continued on page 9

Two Antiques Shows Slated For Historic Bath, Pa. Governor Wolf Show Set For March 5 And 6 And One-Day Chestnut Street Show On March 5 The 13th annual Governor Wolf Historical Society (GWHS) Antiques Show, highlighting primitives and country, is held on the grounds of the 1785 stone Wolf Academy in Bath, Pa. The site also includes the stone center-hall Ralston McKeen House and the Monocacy School. All three buildings will be filled with antiques including country antiques and folk art. Approximately 25 dealers will participate. One of the dealers, Brad Hamilton, said, “The last GWHS Show (2020) was one of the best shows I’ve ever done!” The 1785 Ralston McKeen House has seven fireplaces, which add to the ambiance of the dealer’s displays. One of the unique features of the show is the period room settings. The main house has large rooms (16-by-16 feet) with corner fireplaces. Each of these rooms adorned with antiques will transport the showgoer back to the

19th century with crackling fires and wide heart pine plank floors. The large walk-in fireplace in the kitchen will be used for an educational demonstration of hearth cooking using period equipment, complete with tastings. In the Monocacy School, lunch will be available from Daily Grind, including homemade soups, sandwiches, fresh baked cookies, and more. On day two, the show will feature the popular appraisal clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. Attendees to the show may bring in a maximum of two items at a cost of $5 each to have verbally appraised by veteran antiques dealers. The hours of the show are Saturday, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $6 per person ($5 with a show card, or a Continued on page 7

Morgan’s display will feature around 60 objects from over 20 lenders across the globe, including 31 paintings and drawings by Holbein himself. Hans Holbein the Younger was among the most skilled, versatile, and inventive European artists of the 16th century. He created captivating portraits of courtiers, merchants, scholars, and statesmen in Basel, Switzerland, and later in England, and served as a court painter to King Henry VIII (1491–1547). Enriched by inscriptions, insignia, and evocative attributes, his portraits not only conveyed truthful likenesses but also celebrated the individual’s identities, values, aspirations, and achievements. Spanning the artist’s entire career, “Holbein: Capturing Character” begins with the artist’s early years in Basel, where he was active in the book trade and created iconic portraits of the great humanist scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466–1536). Holbein stayed in England from 1526 to 1528 and moved there permanently in 1532, quickly becoming the most soughtafter artist among nobles, courtiers, and the German merchants of the Hanseatic

The work by Hans Holbein the Younger, “Simon George,” ca. 1535–40, is mixed technique on panel, diameter 31 cm, from the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, inv. 1065.WH. League. In addition to displaying superb examples of Holbein’s drawn and painted likenesses of his sitters, the exhibition also explores the artist’s activities as a designer of prints, book illustrations, personal devices (emblems accompanied by mottos), and jewels. The Morgan’s presentation will also include a section

devoted to the development of Holbein and Hans Lützelburger’s (d. 1526) “Images of Death” (ca. 1526 and 1538), the renowned series of 40 woodcuts that is the masterwork of both artists in this medium. Collector Anecdotes And Antics What’s Hot In The Antiques And Collectibles Trade? The 2022 Edition

By Shawn Surmick Yes, it is time for a brand new year full of broken New Year’s resolutions and crazy predictions of what is to come. Regular readers of this column know that every year I release a series of articles that talk about some of the hottest markets in the antiques and collectibles trade and some that are cooling off. The year 2021 saw many record breaking prices across the entire trade. This was the year that we saw a rare coin sell for close to $20 million, the very first collectible video game soar past $1 million, and a copy of the U.S. Constitution sell for more than $43 million. It is no secret that the antiques and collectibles trade is on fire, and this trend is set to continue well into 2022. Let’s start by taking a look at some

of the hottest collecting markets, and, as always, I will provide my top tips for anyone looking to get into these markets. And before we get to this year’s list, please know that this list represents my own observations in the trade. As such, you may agree or disagree with my observations, but if you disagree, you would most likely be wrong (just kidding, sort of). 5. Luxury Collectibles The market for vintage and modern Rolex watches is on fire, with auctioneers and even high profile watch dealers reporting record-breaking sales. Even Omega and Patek Phillippe watch prices are soaring, with men being the primary consumers of these relics. Women, however, are also doing well in this realm, as the popularity of Hermes Birkin Bags is reaching alltime highs. Blame it on shows like “Sex and the City” or the fact that most people of means are graduating towards high profile fashion, and it is easy to see why these markets are so hot. Tips for Collectors: Getting a modern era Rolex or even a modern era Hermes Birkin Bag at retail is next to impossible at present time, unless you have connections and a lot of money to spend. You are far better off getting a vintage

piece that is in great condition and still in fashion. This is how you can maximize your collecting dollars in a market where the average items sells for $10,000 on up. This is not a market for the inexperienced or cash poor. 4. Numismatics: Coins and Currency The last bull market we saw in collectible investment grade coins occurred back in 2007. However, combine a shaky monetary policy, along with a pandemic, add in a lot of uncertainty, and collectors and investors are going back to basics once again. View the latest offerings in Heritage Auctions or even Stacks and Bowers, and you will see record prices being paid across the board for highly sought after material. That coin that cost $2,000 back in 2017? Prepare to pay $3,000 or more in today’s market. That $5,000 coin that sold back in 2016? That is probably a $7,500-plus coin at present time. The same can be said for graded large size U.S. currency. These markets are soaring. Tips for Collectors: There is still some potential in this market if you know where to look. While it is true that Walking Liberty Halves, Saint Gaudens Gold, proof gold coins, and even Morgan Silver Dollars are all trending

high right now due to increased demand, Barber Dimes, Barber Halves, and Seated Liberty Quarters have not seen the same run up in prices as the more popular coins from the late 19th and 20th centuries. Those looking for growth potential over the long term should start there. For those going after large size currency, silver certificates and gold certificates remain the most popular, with bargains being found is some of the lesser popular Federal Reserve Bank Notes printed in the early 1900s (think 1918 $1 Flying Eagle series). 3. Vintage Key Graded Comic Books Read the entire title, as the key words here are vintage, key, and graded. Marvel and DC comic popularity are at all-time highs thanks in part to the movies and video games that are keeping their characters and stories front and center. With everyone singing the praises of the newest Spider-Man film, vintage key comic books will be in collectors’ consciousness for years to come. And this is also why some of you high profile collectors should think about selling. This market cannot continue to go up in price forever. Tips for Collectors: Any

dealer or auction house can secure you a copy of Amazing Spider-Man 300 in CGC 9.8 within minutes. The same is true for most high profile bronze age keys (Hulk 181, GS X-Men 1, ASM 129). You would be better off going after scarce key books in the best grade you can afford to buy them in. Think Hulk 1 or something similar. Long-term collectors? You may want to think about selling as your collection has gained tremendously these past few years. Take the money and put it in something else. 2. Vintage Pokemon Cards Yup, it is 1999 all over again. Pokemon fever is a byproduct of the nostalgia that younger collectors grew up with. Given the fact that Nintendo owns and controls most of the publishing rights to Pokemon, it should be no surprise that Pokemon fever is well outlasting that of PacMan fever. Tread carefully here. While it is true that Pokemon is by no means in danger of dying out anytime soon, it does not mean that demand will last forever. The pandemic and alternate asset investing made popular by crypto-currency enthusiasts all conspired to help make Pokemon a thing. This one isn’t slowing down, but some

prices are starting to stabilize from their high prices achieved over the last few years. Tips for Collectors: Vintage high grade is where it is at. More specifically, vintage high grade holo-foil cards produced by Wizards of the Coast back in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Avoid the modern era dreck that is being massproduced by the truckload. Also know that while the demographics are strong here, prices can still tank if demand lessons. Collectors usually make the mistake of only looking at supply while not focusing on constantly changing demand. Again, use caution here. So what is number one? For that you have to read the next article, and make no mistake, this collecting category requires a full column devoted to it just due to how it became a “thing.” Can you guess what category it is? Pop culture collectors already know.

On Lincoln’s Birthday, Epic Event At Heritage Auctions To Span President’s Life And Times Sale Offers Autographed Carte de Visite And Iconic Portrait Bust Beginning Saturday, Feb. 12, the 213rd anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth, Heritage Auctions will offer 530 documents and artifacts associated with The Great Emancipator, among them one of the most cited and significant letters of his presidency written in the aftermath of the Battle of Fredericksburg. It has been decades since such a vaunted and valuable assemblage of Lincolnalia has been offered at auction, perhaps not since Oliver Barrett’s celebrated collection was sold in 1952. “When my colleagues and I began discussing this auction

last year,” says Curtis Lindner, Heritage Auctions’ director of Americana, “we never realized the breadth and depth of the material that would be offered. We have held Lincolnrelated auctions in the past, but this is far and above the best to date, an extraordinary event filled with historic achievements, none more so than the amendment abolishing slavery. Its offerings encompass the great man’s triumphs and tragedies.” The two-day event, “Lincoln and His Times,” to be held Feb. 12 and 13, spans the course of Lincoln’s life and career, from his days of

With much fanfare, in 2019 the Miner family donated the 16th president’s Bible to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. But until now this bust has remained in the family’s possession. This is the first time it has appeared at auction. “It has impeccable provenance,” says Lindner. To eliminate the need for multiple sittings, Volk made a life mask

As The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes, “Volk’s portrait bust depicts Lincoln deep in thought and finds its greatest strength in the simple naturalism representing a vigorous man.” According to Volk himself, in the December 1881 issue of “Century,” Lincoln said that “in two or three days after Mr. Volk commenced my bust, there was the animal himself!” This auction counts among its offerings numerous rare and coveted items signed by

shape, 25 mm, with what appeared to be a plug or a hole ($2,500). A great numismatic rarity was found in an 1851 letter. Prior to the establishment of a Branch U.S. Mint in California, private firms made their own gold coins. Some came under fire in 1851 for not containing sufficient gold. These firms, including Dunbar & Co., were “attacked” in the local press, which adversely affected their value. Reacting to this adversity, the letter addresses how Dunbar would cure and defect. It is the first original document to discuss this important period. The letter was signed by Dunbar & Co. and dated March 31, 1851, noting the receipt of 192 9/16 ounces of gold dust at $17.125 per ounce to be paid in Dunbar & Co.’s (gold) coin on demand, “or if said coin will not pay at par at the time of such demand, the amount shall be redeemed at the office of Dodge & Co. in current silver at the hands of Henry D. Cogswell.” It made $2,500. A pair of magnificent signed and labeled art prints by the renowned Japanese landscape artist Hiroshi Yoshida (18761950), titled “Kura at Tomonoura and Lugano,” each signed in pencil and both 10.25by-15.5 inches, went for $3,125. Also, a scarce signed and numbered print by the Spanish Surrealist master Salvador Dali, titled “Thumb Tree” (although

This is why we’re so honored to present ‘Lincoln and His Times.’ It brings so many historic yesterdays into the present and lets collectors share them for countless tomorrows,” continued Lindner. This is an original draft manuscript petition of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery in this country. This draft is signed by Schuyler Colfax, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Hannibal Hamlin, vice president of the United States and president of the Senate; and 107 members of the 38th Congress. 1863, he was downcast and depressed. He felt that the loss was his fault.” Yet he summoned strength enough to issue a public letter of commendation to the troops, in the hopes of mitigating its impact and boosting morale. That letter, later turned into a broadside for mass distribution, has not appeared at auction for decades and is a centerpiece of this extraordinary event, as it spends precious few sentences speaking volumes about the man who wrote and signed the document. “I have just read your Commanding General’s preliminary report of the battle of Fredericksburg,” wrote Lincoln. “Although you were not successful, the attempt was not an error, nor the failure other than an accident. The courage with

which you, in an open field, maintained the contest against an entrenched foe, and the consummate skill and success with which you crossed and re-crossed the river, in face of the enemy, show that you possess all the qualities of a great army, which will yet give victory to the cause of the country and of popular government. Condoling with the mourners for the dead, and sympathizing with the severely wounded, I congratulate you that the number of both is comparatively so small. I tender to you, officers and soldiers, the thanks of the nation.” Of course, this auction is filled with far happier moments and memories, as well, including coveted platters and plates from the Lincoln White House, as well as two flags from his 1860 presidential campaign,

Jan. 8, 1864, signed by the president. There are also numerous documents penned and signed by the president, including an oft-cited 1848 letter in which he supports then Gen. Zachary Taylor’s candidacy for the presidency and another written two years later in which he explains a complex case to a client, reproduced in 1953’s “The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln.” One such document featured in “Lincoln and His Times” is the oft-collected and oft-quoted Dec. 22, 1862, letter the president wrote to the Army of the Potomac following its demoralizing defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg nine days earlier. Under the command of Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, and against the president’s own advice, as Doris Kearns Goodwin notes in “Team of Rivals,” Union forces numbering 122,000 marched across the Rappahannock to Fredericksburg. There, Confederate troops under the command of Gen. Robert E. Lee awaited on what the historian called the fortified high ground at Marye’s Heights. “Caught in a trap,” Goodwin wrote, “the Union forces suffered 13,000 casualties, more than twice the Confederate losses, and were forced into humiliating defeat.” So devastated was the president by the Union’s defeat at Fredericksburg, he is reported to have said, “If there is a worse place than hell, I am in it.” As Michael Burlingame wrote in his 1997 book “The Inner World of Abraham Lincoln,” a War Department secretary to whom he dictated several messages following the slaughter said later that “the calamity seemed to crush Lincoln. He looked pale, wan and haggard. He did not get over it for a long time and, that winter of

Here is Lincoln’s personal example of his portrait bust by Chicago artist Leonard Volk, made before Lincoln’s nomination as the Republican presidential candidate and presented to the Lincolns by Volk in May 1860. The Morgan Quentin Metsys (1466–1530), and a display of intricate period jewelry and book bindings offer further insights into the cultural interest in the representation of individual identity that developed in that period. Taken as a whole, the exhibition demonstrates the visual splendor of the art and culture of the time. “Holbein: Capturing Character” includes some of Holbein’s best-known works. In “A Lady With a Squirrel and a Starling” (Anne Lovell) (ca. 1526–28), painted during his first trip to London, an elegant woman, dressed in an ermine fur cap and a fine silk shawl, holds a squirrel on her lap. The identity of the sitter remained unknown until 2004, when the animals in this portrait were identified as references to the Lovell family. Anne Lovell (née Ashby; d. 1539) was an English noblewoman whose husband, Sir Francis Lovell, served King Henry VIII. Her pet red squirrel, restrained by a silver chain and nibbling a hazelnut, alludes to the squirrels on the Lovell family crest. The starling on the left is a visual pun on East Harling, the location of the Lovell estate in Norfolk, England. “We are extraordinarily excited to bring a Hans Holbein the Younger exhibition of this magnitude to the Morgan in partnership with the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. This

multi-disciplinary show, with its exceptional loans, is the first of its kind in the United States; it will give museum goers the opportunity to experience first-hand signal examples from the career of one of the most engaging artists of the European Renaissance,” stated The Morgan’s director, Colin B. Bailey. An array of engaging public programs will accompany the exhibition. To learn more, visit www.themorgan.org. The Morgan Library & Museum is located at 225 Madison Ave. at 36th Street in New York City.
