The “War between the States” was the great test of the young Republic’s commitment to its founding precepts; it was also a watershed in photographic history. The camera recorded from beginning to end the heartbreaking narrative of the epic four-year war (1861–1865), in which 750,000 lives were lost.

Thomas Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, commented, “During the Civil War years, the medium of photography matured and flourished in surprising and unexpected ways, and what survives from the period is a rich visual legacy of stunning complexity. The tragic beauty and profundity of the photographs have been a touchstone for generations of artists from Walker Evans in the 1930s to today.” At the start of the Civil War, the nation’s photography galleries and image purveyors were overflowing with a variety of photographs of all kinds and sizes, many examUnknown Artist, Union Private, 11th New ples of which will be featured York Infantry (Also Known as the 1st Fire in the exhibition: portraits Zouaves), May-June 1861. made on thin sheets of copper

Julia’s Winter Antiques, Asian, & Fine Art Auction Is One For The Record Books

Gale’s collection included approximately 35 works by William Lester Stevens such as this old Vermont mill. The depiction of the ramshackle building resting beside a waterfall lined with snow sold for $31,050, exceeding its pre-auction estimate.

Rarely does one get to witness the events that unfolded at Julia’s recent antiques, Asian & fine art auction that took place on January 31 and February 1. A definite buzz was felt the weeks leading up to the auction and through the crowd on the day of the sale when a certain Korean folding screen hit the block. The energy was almost palpable with attendees craning their necks for a better view and the rising din as they leaned into their neighbors

One of over 800 lots of Asian antiques that comprised the third day of this huge three-day event that also included over 400 paintings, and over 600 pieces of antique furniture and objects d’art, the piece was an amazing 10-panel folding longevity screen that was full of Asian symbolism for life and endurance and was considered by many to be one of the finest examples known. The bids came fast and furious and one couldn’t help but get caught up in the excitement. Jim Julia’s cadence grew to a fever pitch as the bids continued from a mere $10,000 starting bid to climb past $300,000, then $400,000, then $500,000. When it finally landed at a staggering $603,750, the winning bidder in attendance and the capacity crowd

tles. Drawn from a private medical teaching album put together by this Civil War surgeon and head of Harewood Hospital in Washington, D.C., and on loan from the celebrated Burns Archive, the photographs are notable for their humanity and their aesthetics. They recall Walt Whitman’s words from 1865, that war “was not a quadrille in a ball-room. Its interior history will not only never be written, its practicality, minutia of deeds and passions, will never be suggested.” Bontecou’s medical portraits offer a glimpse of what the poet thought was not possible. In addition to providing a thorough analysis of the camera’s incisive documentation of military activity and its innovative use as a teaching tool for medical doctors, the exhibition explores other roles that photography played during the war. It investigates the relationship between politics and photography during the tumultuous period and presents exceptional political ephemera from the private collection of Brian Caplan, including a rare set of campaign buttons from 1860 featuring original tintype portraits of the competing candidates; a carved tagua nut necklace featuring photographic portraits of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and two members of his cabinet; and an extraordinary folding game board composed of photographic likenesses of President Lincoln and his generals. The show also includes an inspiring carte de visite portrait of the abolitionist and human rights activist Sojourner Truth. A former slave from New York State, she sold photographs of herself to raise money to educate emancipated slaves and to support widows, orphans, and the wounded. And finally the exhibition includes the first photographically illustrated “wanted” poster, a printed broadside with affixed photographic portraits that led to the capture John Wilkes Booth and his fellow conspirators after

country’s premier archive of Southern portraits. These seldomseen photographs, and those by their Northern counterparts, will balance the well-known and often-reproduced views of bloody battlefields, defensive works, and the specialized equipment of 19th-century war. The show will focus special attention on the remarkable images included in the two great wartime albums of original photographs: “Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of War” and George N. Barnard’s “Photographic Views of Sherman’s Campaign,” both released in 1866. The former publication includes 100 views commissioned, sequenced, and annotated by Alexander Gardner. This two-volume opus provides an epic documentation of the war seen through the photographs of 11 artists, including Gardner himself. It features 10 plates of Gettysburg, including Timothy O’Sullivan’s “A Harvest of Death, Gettysburg,” and Gardner’s “Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter, Gettysburg,” both of which are among the most well-known and important images from the early history of photography. The second publication includes 61 large-format views by a single artist, George N. Barnard, who followed the army campaign of one general, William Tecumseh Sherman, in the final months of the war— the “March to the Sea” from Tennessee to Georgia in 1864 and 1865. The exhibition explores how different Barnard’s photographs are from those in Gardner’s Sketch Book, and how distinctly Barnard used the camera to serve a nation trying to heal itself after four long years of war and brother-versus-brother bitterness. Among the most extraordinary, if shocking, photographs in the exhibition are the portraits by Dr. Reed Brockway Bontecou of wounded and sick soldiers from the war’s last bat-

The exhibition offers a historic opportunity to view Wyeth’s rarely-seen tempera painting, Ides of March (1974), along with more than 30 of the studies that were instrumental to his development of the composition. Assembled together for the first time, these provide remarkable insight into the artist’s creative approach and evocative imagery. Brandywine River Museum, located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, is open daily (except Christmas Day) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults; $8 for seniors age 65 and over; $6 for students and children ages 6 to 12; and free for children under 6 and Brandywine Conservancy members. Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon through November 24 (except on May 26 during the Annual Antiques Show).

Antiques & Auction News — April 5, 2013 - - 11

In January, Guernsey’s Auction House in New York City conducted the first of three separate sales of thousands of rare collectible posters seized by the Nazis from collector Dr. Hans Sachs in 1938. Recently returned to Peter Sachs, the son of Dr. Hans Sachs, Guernsey’s auctioned 1,233 lots of the more than 4,000 posters recently retrieved from Germany after seven long years of legal battles initiated by the Sachs family. The first group of posters from the collection was auctioned to the public over the course of three days, fetching approximately $2.5 million dollars.

Top-selling lots included: Kunstsalon Aktuaryus circa 1900, by an anonymous artist known only by the initials E.L., for $57,950; Moderne Galerie circa 1901 by Fritz Behn for $30,500; Arche

Lloyd Express, circa 1929, Lois Gaigg.

Noah circa 1913 by Hermann Keimel for $27,450; Margertittentag circa 1911 by Wilhelm Hartz for $27,450; and Künstlerhaus Jahresausstellung circa 1919 by Karl Sterrer for $24,400. A popular theme of the three-day auction series were

posters from the Vienna Secession movement of the early 1900s, a movement that included painters, sculptors and architects, including Gustav Klimt, one of the founders and the group’s first president. Posters from the Secession movement fetched bids well above-and-beyond their estimates. The Dr. Hans Sachs Poster Auction drew museum representatives and dealers from around the globe, with

An analysis of the fiber and dye content of the flag’s materials and ink inscription on the hoist has been completed and accompanies this lot. Ames eventually became a farmer and Methodist minister in Oneida County, New York, until the age of 75 when he then moved to a farm in Wisconsin. This flag is accompanied by photocopies of Ames’s pension records from the National Archives; correspondence relating to his years of military service; a number of accounts of his life, along with photographs and transcribed interviews with Ames from December 11, 1832 and June 28, 1833, recounting his Revolutionary War service. Also included is a photocopy of “A Sketch of the Life of Nathaniel Ames as Dictated by him, the R.P. Main, Oregon, Wis,” and an article from The Saturday Globe, March 5, 1898. The 13-star flag will be sold at Freeman’s in Philadelphia on April 17 with American furniture, folk and decorative arts from the colonial period through the 20th-century. Other notable militaria in this sale include a portrait miniature of dedicated military officer Walker Keith Armistead (1785-1845) of Virginia and a large French and Indian War engraved

from the 18th-century. After having the flag examined and analyzed by McCrone Associates, Inc. of Westmont, Illinois, they concluded that it had all the characteristics of a flag from that time. This flag’s unusual hand-written inscription is thought to have been made by Nathaniel Ames (17611863), born in Killingly, Connecticut. He joined the New London County Militia at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, and as a 17-year-old, helped in the building of Fort Griswold in Groton, Connecticut. He later joined the Connecticut Continental Army and served under Washington at Morristown during the harsh winter of 1780. Ames went on to join the crew of a 16-gun brig and privateer, Marquise de Lafayette, and traveled to Holland and the West Indies. Upon the ship’s return in 1783, Ames signed onto another merchant ship sailing, yet again, to the West Indies this time under an English captain. The ship was captured and taken to Bermuda where the crew was held prisoner for three months. It is during this captivity that Ames most likely signed and dated the flag. It is also possible that he was impressed (forced to serve) onto a British ship for three more years at sea. The flag itself is a wonderful revelation of science, history and geography. The red dye has been identified as cochineal, and the blue dye as “Prussian” blue-both in common use in England and North America by the end of the 18th-century. The inscription ink was identified as thin Oriental smoke-black ink in a

Freeman’s is honored to offer a rare 13-star flag, estimated at $175,000$250,000, in the upcoming April 17 auction of American Furniture, Folk, & Decorative Arts. This piece arrives on the heels of another flag and ensign collections that were successfully sold at Freeman’s-The Grand Division of Color of the 8th Virginia Regiment, which achieved $422,500 in November 2012, and the Historic USS Constitution Colors from the Collection of H. Richard Dietrich Jr., which realized $784,500 in April 2012. According to family lore, the 13-star flag was found in a trunk left by Michael Patrick Patton (1870-1943), a draper and decorator of patriotic flag displays. Born to John and Catherine Patton of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, he worked at the Cardington Mills, a cotton cloth factory at nearby Cobb’s Creek with most of his seven siblings. Their jobs included weaving, dying, piecing and picking, but at the time of Patton’s marriage to Julia Elizabeth Ruth in 1892, he was listed as a weaver. In the early part of the last century, Patton became involved in decorating buildings and large interiors such as those at Philadelphia’s Frankford Arsenal. In the early 1960s, Patton’s trunk and its contents were passed on to his great-grandson, who took little interest in it at the time. However, he did recognize one of the items as an American flag. It was not until he retired did he suspect he could have a possible treasure in his possession. He then began to verify that it was, indeed,

ESTATE SALE OF JAMES AND JEANNETTE CLAWSON A political appointment to the White House staff brought Jim and Jeannette Clawson to Maryland more than 40 years ago, with a break to work at the World’s Customs Organization based in Brussels, Belgium in the late 1970s. During this time they acquired multiple antiques, memorabilia, paintings, objects d’art, and many collections. Before their marriage in 1962 Jim spent two years in Southern Africa as a missionary for the Mormon Church where he collected ivory carvings, Nbele beadwork, and other African artifacts. Members of the Nbele Tribe are easily recognized by the multiple rings they place around their neck. Jim’s career as an attorney, government official at the White House and Department of the Treasury, and international diplomat allowed him and Jeannette to travel extensively throughout the world where they were able to collect the many and unique valuable items available for auction. During their stay in Belgium the Clawsons purchased antique furniture, tapestries, dolls, and collections of many kinds. They come from Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, the UK, France and Italy. Many of the items are one-of-a-kind pieces or limited edition collections that include porcelain, china, sterling silver, and ivory. On their return from Europe Jim started his own international consulting business that again required him to travel around the world to countries like Russia, China, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Argentina with regular visits to Europe and the United Kingdom. He always brought back some memento for one of Jeannette’s collections. Jim is the son of Congressman and Mrs. Del Clawson. Del Clawson was born in Thatcher, Arizona in 1914. He worked for the Federal Public Housing Authority in Arizona and California, then served as manager of the Mutual Housing Association of Compton, California until 1963 when he was elected to the Eighty-eighth Congress by special election. He was reelected to seven succeeding Congresses (June 11, 1963 - December 31, 1978) until he retired. Many of the items in this auction were inherited by Jim and Jeannette from his parents. At the time of his retirement Del was serving on the powerful Rules Committee and became chairman of Republican Policy Committee. The committee chairmanship was the fourth-ranking Republican House leadership post. Previously he was a member of the Banking and Finance Committee, the Budget Committee and the Appropriations Committee. He was also one of the Congressional representatives to the International Parliament Association. Because of his service in Congress and the international responsibilities, he and Marjorie were able to travel and meet many foreign dignitaries and were able to purchase many unique and valuable items. Growing up in Arizona and New Mexico, Marjorie and her father were artists and collectors of southwest Indian relics. She continued to acquire prints and paintings from well-known artists throughout her life. Del and Marjorie were well-liked both in Washington and California. He was elected time and again from a district in Southern California, which was heavily Democratic and African-American and never lost an election. He was trusted by his constituents, his family and his church and never lost that trust to his dying day.

Another highlight is a four-page letter with early Hawaiian and U.S. postage stamps that was written and mailed from Honolulu in 1854 by Maria Whitney Pogue, the first missionary child born in Hawaii. It is estimated at $50,000 to $70,000. A letter written in 1851 and sent to New York from Canada using an 1847 U.S. postage stamp is estimated at $20,000 to $30,000. The letter is addressed to Edwin D. Morgan, who would be elected New York Governor in 1859 and elected to the U.S. Senate in 1863. Edwin also served as the first Chairman of the Republican National Committee. “I enjoy collecting, studying, admiring and displaying historic stamps and postal history, and have always been fascinated by the provenance of items and how important items move from one outstanding collection to another over the years. near $4 million gross against a low estimate of only $2 million. The 800+ lot session of Asian antiques contained many special offerings, including a large selection of scrolls. These traditional Chinese art forms on vertical stretches of silk or rice paper were sometimes elaborate depictions of garden scenes and/or Chinese verse. One such hanging example from the late 18th- or early 19thcentury depicting a recluse

Other vessels included a marvelous porcelain shouldered vase finely painted with a scene of five scholars receiving an unexpected visit from Shao Lao on a crane. Estimated for $700-$900, it went out at $26,450. A diminutive carved tortoise shell seal paste box with a fitted interior containing an emerald green jade ring also saw a lot of action. It ignored its $500-$700 estimate to finish up at $21,850. Miscellaneous pieces

Victorian furniture included American Aesthetic Revival pieces such as an 8-piece Herter Brothers inlaid walnut parlor suite. Comprised of a triple back settee, a pair of gentleman’s armchairs, three smaller lady’s armchairs and pair of side chairs, the set featured elaborate carvings and friezes set with marquetry vinery. Coming to the block with a $15,000-$20,000 estimate, it found a buyer at $34,500. One of Gale’s favorite artists was Vermont’s own Aldro Hibbard. His collection included a remarkable offering of over 25 of Hibbard’s works, highlighted in part by a monumental oil on canvas winter scene of the West River Valley. From the Gale collection, one coveted lot was a large and beautiful oil on canvas harbor scene by Frederick Mulhaupt titled “Gloucester Gill Netters” depicting several fisherman in the misty morning preparing their nets for a day on the water. With exhibition labels for the National Arts Club and the Cape Ann Arts Festival, this great work went out at $57,500 within its $50,000-$80,000 presale estimate.

One item in particular was an excellent oil on canvas winter scene by Emile Gruppe titled “Evening Light, Vermont” that glows with the colors of sunset. Estimated for $7,000-$9,000, it went out at $19,550. French artist Victor Gabriel Gilbert’s outstanding Parisian street scene showing a stocked flower cart as the stationary focal point among bustling pedestrians and horse drawn vehicles blossomed well above its $8,000-$12,000 to sell for $34,500. The auction continued with approximately 200 18th- and 19th-century prints, many of which came from the Robert Nugent Estate of Montclair, New Jersey. Postcards Galore At The Spring Allentown Paper Show The Allentown Antique Book, Paper, and Advertising Show has something for everyone, but postcard collectors will have tables full of their favorite collectible, offered by dozens of specialty dealers on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday April 28, in the Agricultural Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds, Allentown, Pennsylvania. Head straight to “Postcard Row,” where knowledgeable dealers have organized thousands of these small treasures, pull up a chair, and enjoy the great selection of view cards, greetings, artist-signed, topicals and more. You don’t need to be an expert in deltiology (the collecting and study of postcards) to appreciate the fun and affordable

nature of postcards. Novelty postcards, such as mechanical cards with moving parts or cut-outs to hold up to the light, are just two types of specialty cards. Vividly colored linen postcards, printed from the 1930s through late 1940s, provide nostalgic views of roadside gas stations, diners and motels as well as a multitude of other subjects. The possibilities of topics, styles and views make this an exciting collecting field. The Allentown Paper Show brings great ephemera to all collectors, including desirable autographs, decorative stock certificates and bonds, calendars, catalogs, delightful children’s books, cookbooks, folk art, fraktur, letters, magazines, maps, photographs, political pins,

postal history, posters, prints, sheet music, stereoviews, theatre programs, and many other vintage paper items. Antique advertising choices range from colorful signs and salesman’s samples to boxes, bottles and tins that held tobacco, medicine, toiletries, food or cleaning agents. With 170 booths of quality dealers, this show is a must-see. Show hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3p.m., in the Agricultural Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds, located at 1929 Chew Street. For more information, call Sean Klutinoty, (610) 5734969 or e-mail: allentown papershow@gmail.com. The website is www.allen townpapershow.com.

desk with three-quarter burl walnut gallery and double pivoting doors that open to reveal an interior fitted with bird’seye maple writing surface and loads of drawers and cubbies likewise exceeded its $3,000$5,000 estimate to bring $8,625. An outstanding diminutive gold and jeweled moss agate oval covered portrait box featured a hinged lid set with a cameo of a black woman’s profile. It displayed the craftsmanship and quality of a true artist and saw much action beyond its $1,500-$2,500 estimate, ultimately selling for $31,050. The day was finished out by a select grouping of Indian artifacts including an outstanding lot of over 300 Native American photographs from the early 20th century by Harmon Marble ranging from the traditional period with native dress and domestic activities to their assimilation into white culture. A captivat-

ing photographic history of the transition period, the grouping sold toward the upper end of its $5,000$10,000 estimate for $9,200. And a rare Sioux beaded doctor’s bag with exquisite beadwork and stylized Native American imagery went out at $4,600 within its $3,000$5,000 estimate. Julia’s auctions included a phenomenal firearms and military auction taking place March 11 and 12. Following

will be Julia’s toy and doll auction as well as their rare lamp and glass auction in June. Their next antiques, fine art, and Asian artifact auction will take place in August 2013. Julia’s is currently accepting consignments for these and other upcoming auctions. Call immediately for inclusion in these exciting sales. For more information, contact their offices at 207453-7125. 33rd Annual Convention Of The National Association Of Milk Bottle Collectors The National Association of Milk Bottle Collectors (NAMBC) will hold its 33rd annual convention at The Holiday Inn in Grantville (Hershey), Pa., at the junctions of Interstates 80 and 81, from Thursday, May 30, to Saturday, June 1. Throughout the convention, members will sell and trade milk bottles, caps and dairyrelated memorabilia. Lee Kaiss of California will present “The Challenges of a 50State Milk Bottle Collection.” Also, the wealth of knowledge of longtime collectors will be showcased in an “Ask the Experts” seminar, at which convention goers can get answers to their collecting queries. An important part of the convention is the large educational displays created by members to highlight their prized milk bottles or other dairy memorabilia. The convention will conclude with a members-only auction of milk bottles, caps and a wide range of related dairy items on Saturday evening. All attendees must register, beginning Thursday morning. A registration fee is required of all attendees over the age of 10 years. On-site registration is $10 for members (all three days), $12 for

With two more auctions on the horizon, the public still has ample opportunity to own a piece from this worldfamous collection of posters, the largest of its kind in existence. Dates for the next auctions will be set within the coming months and as with the first round of auctions, the remainder of the Sachs posters will be sold with no reserves. The Sachs Poster Collection is universally described as being the most significant collection of its type in existence. Dr. Hans Sachs amassed an extensive collection of posters spanning categories including art, propaganda, politics, entertainment (from cabarets and dining to opera and early film), travel, sports, consumer products (from cigarettes to the

Around the time of Dr. Sachs’ discovery of posters, his father happened to receive three posters featuring Sarah Bernhardt from a friend in Paris, advertising each of her performances as “Gismonda,” “Lorencaccio,” and “Les Dame aux Camelias.” Those three iconic posters became the start of what would become Dr. Sachs’ extensive Poster Collection, spanning the years from 1898 to 1938; a collection that would eventually consist of more than 12,000 posters and 18,000 smaller pieces in the field of applied graphic art. In addition to amassing the most extensive collection of posters in the world, Dr. Sachs had also created a meticulous method to manage, file and keep track of what were substantial masses of paper, often VI. By 1938, under the direction of Josef Goebbels, the Gestapo seized his Collection on the nominal excuse that he possessed “degenerate art,” when in reality, Goebbels collected political posters as well as commercial ones, including rare early Nazi party propaganda, which was of particular interest, as he was planning a new museum dedicated to what he referred to as “business art.” Dr. Sachs Heraus!, circa 1917, Hans Rudi was then placed in a concen- Erdt. tration camp. With the help of the return of what was left of family and friends, he was his father’s collection, but the able to gain his release from museum wanted no part of the camp, but he never saw any negotiations and refused nor heard of his massive to cooperate. “We naively poster collection again and hoped that the museum abide by the believed that the collection would was likely destroyed by Washington Principals, but it certainly did not turn out that Nazis. explains Cindy In August of 1956, now way,” living in the United States, Schlanger, one of the attorDr. Sachs reached out to the neys from the Osen firm that Director of Public Education the Sachs family retained. in Berlin’s West sector. tion and it is impossible to give you a positive answer on that score. We only know that the collection was not sent to the Museum for Arts and Crafts, whose very thick walls enabled it to withstand the effects of the bombings. We assume, however, that the whole collection was stored in the building next to the museum which was formerly the Gestapo Headquarters and which was totally demolished during the war. As far as any objects that might have been left there are concerned, these were completely cleared out by the first Army of Occupation.” Dr. Sachs was thus left to believe that unfortunately, all hope of ever recovering any portion of his entire collection had vanished and that in all probability would, “… be forever lost to the world of graphic art.” In 1966, Dr. Sachs discovered that part of his collection had survived and was in an East German museum. His efforts to see the collection again were rebuffed by the East German authorities. Sadly, Dr. Sachs went to his grave in 1974, never seeing his collection again. In 2005, his son Peter Sachs, a retired airline pilot living in Florida, decided that he would look into the matter further, hoping to uncover at least a portion of his father’s legacy. Thanks to the Internet, researching items seized during World War II had become significantly easier, and Peter quickly discovered that a portion of his deceased father’s poster collection was in fact being housed at the German Historical Museum. He immediately enlisted the help of attorneys specializing in restitution cases to negotiate

felt that the Sachs family no longer had any legal claim or right to ownership. A lengthy seven-year court battle ensued, traveling through all three levels of Germany’s courts, with the highest court finally awarding the Sachs family with the return of the remaining posters. Today, the rarity of these posters is such that some are believed to be the sole known examples in the world of particular images.
