Country Americana, Glass And Ceramics Lead Garth’s Fall Auction Schedule s summer winds down and kids head back to school, Garth’s, of Delaware, Ohio is prepping for two solid auctions in back-toback weekends at their main gallery, 2690 Stratford Road. Kicking off Garth’s fall schedule is the Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7, Country Americana auction. Filled with a spectacular array of painted surfaces on furniture, folk art and accessories, the annual auction has come to be known as the Labor Day Weekend Auction (although it occurs on the weekend after Labor Day). Among the over 830 lots is a sampling of the extensive antiques, country store and advertising collection of the late J. Garland Warren of San Marcos, Texas, (with more of the collection to follow in upcoming fall sales); additional items come from the collection of the late Helen B. Porter; and a handful of remaining pieces are from the

What fun would it be to buy a home completely furnished? Not much for die-hard collectors, but this early 20th-century trade sign for Rosebury and Son, Bay City, thought that was just what people wanted - “Houses Completely Furnished.” Such convenience! Measuring 36 by 72 inches, this well-illustrated single-sided sign is estimated at $400-$800.

This early 20th-century American advertising sign for “Emerson Vehicles” touts quality forged steel vehicles made by the Emerson Carriage Co., of Rockford, Ill. With the original gilt and sanded surface, the 19-by-75-inch sign is estimated to reach $1,000-$1,500.

Gaylord is sure to tempt many a folk art collector. At just 8.75” square, the oil on board is estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Just as whimsical are the varied pattern names of the seventeen quilts in the auction. A neatly pieced “Blazing Stars” quilt with double diamond borders is estimated at $1,000$2,000, while a classic Amish “Diamond in the Square” quilt composed of rich green, deep purple and precise and closely worked stitches is estimated at $1,500$2,500.

Joyce and Vernon Haan of Lake Geneva, Wis., will celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary on Sept. 2, and they have spent most of that time together satisfying their passion for collecting. The majority of galleries involved with Amazon Art are not high-end, and most of the artworks offered range in price from $100 to $5,000. Galleries in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and the Netherlands are participating. The site currently features over 40,000 works from more than 150 galleries and dealers. Viking Village Antique & Collectible Show The 2013 Viking Village Antique & Collectible Show in Bay Barnegat Light, N.J., was stronger than ever. Eager buyers turned out in record numbers to the show, held at the Historic Viking Village on Aug. 4. Over 65 dealers provided a wide variety of merchandise including country and shabby chic furniture, architectural and industrial findings, nautical items, textiles and vintage clothing, kitchenware, stoneware, jewelry, and various collectibles and memorabilia. Although several returning dealers were put out of business by Hurricane Sandy, exhibitors from eight states stepped up to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Support the Shoreâ&#x20AC;? and included Scott Hay of Touch of Gray Antiques, Damariscotta, Maine; Matt White of Recycling The Past, Barnegat, N.J.; Sandra and Barry Bock of Toms River, N.J.; Jim Chamberlain of Chamberlain Antiques, Elverson, Pa.; Mary Oriscak with estate jewelry of Toms River, N.J.; Mer Ivans of Boat House Antiques, Hightstown, N.J.; Marsha Batts of Mount Laurel, N.J.; Mark Dooley of North Star Antiques, Philadelphia, Pa., and Marlboro, Texas; Steve Harminson of Bath Keepers Cottage, Berkley Springs,

West Virginia; Mike Cooke of Royal Port Antiques of Salem, N.J.; Pam Larson of The Seawife, Barnegat Light, N.J., and Bill Lovgren of Point Pleasant, N.J., who is known for his old folk art and signs. The show was promoted by The Seawife Antiques. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of all the shows over the years, I was more concerned about this one than any other show in over 18 years because of the impact on business at the shore, yet was so pleasantly surprised at the fantastic crowd and grateful for the support I got from the dealers who helped pull off a great show and good sales,â&#x20AC;? stated Pam Larson. This fall, the Morgan Library & Museum will display a selection of exceptional documents from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, one of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foremost collections of Americana. The presentation, which will be on view starting Tuesday, Sept. 10, represents transformative moments and key figures in U.S. history, and it reflects the collectionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strengths in documents from the Revolutionary, early national, antebellum, and Civil War periods. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Reflections on a Nationâ&#x20AC;? will be on view in the Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1906 McKim building through Jan. 12, 2014. The Morgan has enjoyed a nearly two-decade-long relationship with the Gilder Lehrman Institute, which was founded by Richard Gilder and Lewis E. Lehrman in 1994. That same year, the Morgan presented â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seeds of Discord: The Politics of Slavery,â&#x20AC;? an acclaimed exhibition featuring documents from the collection. On view in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Reflections on a Nationâ&#x20AC;? will be the only surviving copy of a 1776 edition of the Declaration of Independence printed in the South. South Carolinian Peter Timothy put his life on the line by publishing his name on the document. Indeed, four years later he was arrested, charged with treason, and confined to a British prison ship before being incarcerated in St. Augustine, Fla.

a friendly Indian. The Indian was one of those employed by the U.S. Army for scout work. He told my father that the coat had been taken by Sitting Bull from General Custer, who was wearing it at the time he was killed. It is impossible to establish an authentic history of the coat. I have only the above family history and my father’s Army discharge papers, which definitely place him in service at the time of General Custer’s death.” A copy of Joseph Dietzen’s discharge papers included with this lot confirms that he was in the service at the time of Custer’s death in 1876. The letter also states that the Smithsonian Institution was interested in obtaining the jacket, “but at that time, no money had been appropriated with which they could buy the coat.” The museum was of the opinion that the jacket was made

especially for a white chief by the Indians, and the floral designs on the coat represented several Native American tribes. As mentioned in an undated

newspaper article, the Smithsonian believed that the bands were of the Apache Indians of Arizona and the floral designs were made by Chippewas and Menominees of the Great Lakes region. The jacket remained in the Dietzen family until 1959, when John Dietzen sold it to Col. Raymond Vietzen, where it was placed in his Indian Ridge museum in Elyria, Ohio. The museum contents were sold in 1995 when Vietzen died, and the jacket was sold to its current owner. As for the jacket itself, its construction is primarily of elk skin, and it has been lavishly and colorfully embroidered and fringed. The front and back of the jacket are adorned with a triangular pattern of various colored materials and embroidered with a floral pattern that extends down the sleeves. The triangle inserts appear to be fashioned out of silk and corduroy. Two bullet holes are visible on the jacket. The first is located on the upper left side of the jacket’s rear (entry) and exited the front left breast near the heart and has a 3/4-inch-diameter circular-shaped repair. A second circular-shaped repair, nearly 1/2 inch in diameter, is found on the right sleeve, of which both spots exhibit considerable and visible blood staining. Custer was known for wearing a buckskin coat and

trousers while serving in the West. The image of the buckskin-dressed Custer fighting to his death in a defensive circular position amongst his beloved and doomed 7th Cavalry has been immortalized in paintings, literature, and over 50 films. It is a wellknown fact that Custer owned several buckskin coats. In 1912, Custer’s widow donated one of her late husband’s famous jackets to the Smithsonian Institution, where it remains today. But did Custer wear a buckskin jacket on the day he died? Many accounts by Indian warriors who fought at the Little Bighorn told of a death of a buckskin-clad officer. Many assumed that this officer was Custer, but other officers of the regiment also wore buckskins, including Custer’s brother, whose mutilated body was stripped of his jacket. White Bull, the nephew of Sitting Bull and one of several men who claimed credit for killing Custer, attested that he shot a buckskin-clad officer riding “a fine-looking big horse, a sorrel with a blazed face and four white stockings.” Custer was the only officer on a sorrel horse with four white socks, and this one detail does suggest that Custer died wearing a buckskin jacket. With the exception of his socks and the shoe portion of one boot, Custer’s body was stripped naked. The Colonel’s body was found among a group of about 42 dead men, possibly in a defensive posture. By several separate accounts of troopers who sur-

veyed the aftermath of Last Stand Hill, Custer’s body was found with bullet wounds in the temple, left side of his chest, and arm. Note the same bullet wounds in the jacket. Compared to the bodies of his comrades, Custer had been mildly mutilated. “I can’t tell you how many times in this business we are approached by individuals who claim to own Ben Franklin’s bifocals, Abraham Lincoln’s axe, or General Robert E. Lee’s sword. Rarely do the items even look the part, let alone have any documentation or provenance to back up their claim. This jacket is not only of the period and style, but is accompanied by enough evidence to certainly be plausible. Since we cannot say for certain, we want to simply present the facts, and the let buyers make up their own mind,” concluded Thomson. The Custer-attributed death jacket will be offered accompanied with a buckskin shirt attributed to also coming from Little Bighorn. The sale will take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, on day three of the large sale. Also included in the sale is an extensively documented Springfield model 1873 trapdoor carbine confiscated by federal troops after the Wounded Knee massacre. This carbine is one of eight such trapdoor carbines recovered after the battle, having been initially procured by Indian warriors after their victory at the Little Bighorn.
