proud to be offering these unique items to collectors,” said Richard E. Russek, president of Grey Flannel Auctions. The game-used Babe Ruth cap, which was sourced from the Ruth family more than 30 years ago, is the only example known to have been worn by the Bambino during his 1934 tour of Japan, which took place only weeks after his departure from the Yankees. The Dec. 17 Grey Flannel event marks the first time the Ruth cap from the historic tour of Japan has ever come to auction. “The 1934 tour made headlines around the world,” said Russek. “Nearly half a million Japanese fans lined the streets of Tokyo to welcome the great f o r m e r - Ya n k e e ballplayer, who rode through the Ginza district in an opentop limousine. The rare navy blue wool cap with NY logo is in beautiful, all-original condition. Embroidered inside the sweatband is “7 J. Group Of Fraktur Found Inside Leather-Bound Book Sells At Toomey Auction Service Main Group Of Newly Discovered Fraktur Sell For Combined $42,350 At Black Friday Estate Sale
Here are five of the six main fraktur drawings that were recently discovered inside a 201-year-old leather bound version of the “Martyrs Mirror” during an estate clean-out in a house in York, Pa. The framed fraktur was placed in the frame by the auction company for conservation purposes.
and were often highly personal records symbolizing religious beliefs. Other examples were artistic expressions done in schools, completed in large part during the late 18th century and into the 19th century. They could be both handwritten or printed. Today, fraktur are largely identified as Pennsylvania German folk art and widely collected as an art form. The Free Library of Philadelphia has the largest collection of this unique type of calligraphic work.
This fraktur drawing of two parrots facing one another with elaborate floral designwork stemming from vases was in excellent condition and retained its vibrant red, yellow, green and blue coloration. It sold to a dealer bidding by phone for $13,750 and was underbid by New Jersey dealer James Grievo in the salesroom.

These three tulip drawings sold for $4,400 each to a phone bidder.
This Christian Strenge fraktur sold to private collectors in the salesroom for $10,450. It was underbid by collector Paul Flack, also in the salesroom. A comparable example sold 13 days earlier at Conestoga Auction Company in Manheim, Pa., for $7,670.
$660. The dealer who bought the majority of the fraktur also bought the book they were found in. It sold for $495. The large leather bound version of the “Martyrs Mirror” was printed in Lancaster, Pa., in 1813. Next to the Bible, the “Martyrs Mirror” holds great significance to the Anabaptist
community. Translated from Dutch to German in the 18th century, the famous work offers accounts and stories of martyrdom and much more. The book has served as an important document to both Mennonite and Amish faiths for centuries. For additional information, call Toomey Auction Service at 717-252-0289.

sold for $4,950 to the same phone bidder and was underbid by collector Paul Flack in the salesroom. The sixth piece was signed by Christian Strenge and dated “1803.” It sold to central Pennsylvania private collectors in the salesroom for $10,450, underbid by Flack. A fair amount of material has been published about Strenge. He was born in 1757 and signed much of his work. He fought in the American Revolution on behalf of the British and was captured by Washington’s troops in Trenton. Following the war, Strenge worked in Lancaster and Chester counties as a schoolmaster. It is known he spent time in Hempfield Township, outside of Lancaster city, and that while he was not Mennonite, many of the students he taught were. He is known for his vorschrift (writing samples or studies). His work has stylistic qualities and influences to another early documented Lancaster County fraktur artist, Christian Alsdorff. A similiar example to the one which sold is illustrated in David Johnson’s article in the July 1979 issue of the Der Reggeboge, the journal of the Pennsylvania German Society. A comparable example to the one sold, also in very good condition, sold nearly two weeks earlier on Nov. 15 at Conestoga Auction Company for $7,670. It was signed and dated, “Written in Hempfield Township in 1802 by Christian Strenge.” The six main pieces mentioned in this story sold for a c o m b i n e d $42,350. The dealer bidding by phone, who bought five of them, paid a combined $31,900. There was more early ephemera discovered in the book, including two rare printed and hand-colored Adam and Eve broadsides. A l t h o u g h unsigned, they were likely printed by the Baumann This is Mark Toomey at the auction family in Ephrata, podium taking bids from a bidder on the Pa. The main grouping sold at the Toomey sale consisted of six hand-drawn examples, all recently discovered in a large leather bound “Martyrs Mirror.” “The fraktur came from an east York estate and were found in a family Bible,” said auctioneer Mark Toomey. One hand-drawn example with two parrots facing one another and tulip floral work stemming from double-handled vases sold for $13,750 to a dealer bidding by phone. It was underbid by dealer James Grievo in the salesroom (prices include the 10 percent buyer’s premium). The drawing retained its vivid coloration and was likely inside the book for roughly 150 or so years. It was probably from the first quarter of the 19th century and either drawn in York or Lancaster counties. An identical fraktur sold at the first Dorothy and Eugene Elgin sale, which was held at Conestoga Auction Company on April 3, 2004, for $6,600. A similiar example, but with less decorative embellishment and some mild stains sold at the Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Henry Meyer sale held by Sotheby’s on Jan. 20, 1996, for $5,750. Three tulip drawings with double-handled vases by the same hand as the parrot drawing were sold next by choice. The same phone bidder bought them for $4,400 each and took all three. They were underbid by Grievo. A full-sheet drawing with three lower hearts and tulip floral work was found in seperate pieces folded in the book and Toomey wisely put it safely in a frame for the auction. It

SHOPS & CENTERS The Rise Of The Robots
By Shawn Surmick
In 1984 the domestic toy market was in constant change. The popular Star Wars line of action figures were well on their way to the bargain bin as the last great release in the original Star Wars film trilogy, “The Return of the Jedi,” was released in 1983. It was at this time that Mattel was starting to gain traction with a new and original theme called the Masters of the Universe. Mattel’s primary competitor in the toy market at this point in time was Hasbro. Hasbro had already established itself as a worthy competitor thanks in part to a successful retooling of its popular G.I. Joe line of
action figures. Based on the once infamous 12-inch figures that graced store shelves in the 1960s, this new line was totally recreated using a unique back story that pitted the fearless G.I. Joe team against a ruthless terrorist organization known as COBRA. In a bold move Hasbro restructured the entire line and shrank the 12-inch action figures down to a much more accepted 3.7- inch size. The toy line was launched in 1982, and much like Mattel’s own Masters of the Universe line, it started to sell extremely well after a weekly animated cartoon series was released bringing the highly original characters to life. Yet despite all their success with the new G.I. Joe line, Hasbro found themselves in need of another hit. Mattel was quickly outpacing them in multiple markets. With the success of Barbie and guaranteed revenues from their successful Hot Wheels line of die cast racers, Hasbro was increasingly worried that Mattel would control almost the entire domestic toy market. It was at this time that Hasbro would look across the Pacific to find their savior.
The Japanese have always been at the forefront of science fiction and forward thinking design. The various tin toy robots and space vehicles released in the 1950s and 1960s showcase this brilliantly. By the early 1980s a popular Japanese toy company by the name of Takara had a successful release of a series of toy robots that changed into various types of objects and vehicles. The series was a smash success in Japan, and it was called the Diaclone toy line. Hasbro was fascinated with the success of the toy line and was highly interested in acquiring the rights for a U.S. launch. The first wave of the new toy line launched on U.S. shores in 1984. Called Transformers for their American release, the first wave of toys is fondly referred to as Generation One. Transformers featured a series of robots made up as either heroic Autobots or evil Decepticons as they battled for dominance across the universe. Due to the fact that Transformers were made out of die cast metal and high quality parts, the toys were not cheap.
Some of the more popular figures at the time retailed for $39.99 or more. With names like Soundwave, Megatron, Optimus Prime, and Bumblebee, the Transformers toy line was definitely one of the most highly original series to come out in some time. It should be noted that Transformers were not an immediate success in the U.S. The series really didn’t start to flourish until their second year on store shelves. While they did sell somewhat briskly at first, it took some time for the general toy buying public to warm up to the idea that robots could change into various vehicles and objects. By 1985 Transformers had an animated television series, as well as a successful comic book published monthly by Marvel Comics. It was also by this time that demand for the product increased. Hasbro had successfully launched another popular toy line. Today Hasbro still continues to build on the popular Transformers theme. While the original toys from the Generation One series are the most coveted by collectors, the
several sequels. It was also the on screen success of the Transformers that paved the way for Hasbro to release its highly popular G. I. Joe toy line as a live action film in 2009. Today original factorysealed Generation One Transformers are highly coveted by collectors and toy enthusiasts alike. It is not uncommon to find these toys selling for several thousand dollars each in factory sealed near mint or better condition. Even mint and complete loose toys carry a hefty price tag due to the fact that most of the toy line was played with throughout the years. It is not uncommon to find loose and complete third party graded toys selling for hundreds of dollars on auction sites like eBay. series has had several rebirths. In the 1990s the series took a unique turn when the Beast Wars line was produced. This series had the most popular characters rebranded as animallike creatures. The series was very popular, and since then the Transformers line has been rebranded several more times. Then at the dawn of the new millennium, Hasbro released the commemorative series in select stores that allowed new consumers to buy the original Generation One series in all new packaging. It was at this time that values on the secondary market for the original Generation One series started to increase exponentially. By 2007 the series would be recreated once again as acclaimed director Michael Bay brought the beloved characters to the big screen in an all new live action film. The film was a box office success and spawned

Historical Items Highlight Alderfer’s December Sale A George Washington letter, an early American bell, a book that influenced 16th-century exploration of the world, a map that helped travelers over the Rocky mountains during the California gold rush, a Union Civil War flag, and a William Penn document that transferred 5,000 acres of Pennsylvania land are some of the rare and historical items that will highlight Alderfer’s quarterly Antique and Fine Arts Auction. The sale will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, at their auction center in Hatfield, Pa. The autographed George Washington letter was penned shortly before Washington’s death in 1799 and is political
in subject matter. A fine relic offered in the auction is a 5- pound bronze bell cast by Edwin Hedderly in Philadelphia in 1813. In his short career as a bell manufacturer, Edwin cast a number of bells for churches and town buildings, but few survive today. The book “Principall Navigations, Voiages, and Discoveries of the English Nation: Made by Sea or Over Land to the Most Remote and Farthest Distant Quarters of the Earth by Richard Hakluyt was printed in London in 1589 and is an extremely rare book. Hakluyt’s book was influential in world exploration in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
The book served as a guide and promoted exploration by detailing then recent discoveries and what the exotic areas of the world could offer. Of special importance and visual impact is an American Civil War banner/flag featuring a large eagle surrounded by stars. The flag belonged to Willett Wescott and went with him to war when he joined Company D of the 12th Wisconsin Infantry. Pennsylvania historians and collectors will be interested in the 1681 dated land indenture signed by William Penn. The indenture transfers 5,000 acres of land in the colony of Pennsylvania to William Bowman, who was a
glazier (manufacturer of windows) in England. William never came to America, but his son Thomas did, bringing large quantities of window glass. The Dec. 11 auction will also include autographs of Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, various 19th-century artists, wedding photographs of World War I hero and Medal of Honor recipient Alvin York, an archive of letters from Herman Goring to his first wife, and various ethnographic artifacts, as well as various other historical items. New Book Authored By Mike Tauber Is Titled “Retro Radio: Six Decades of Design 1920s-1970s Vintage radio aficionados are in for a treat this season, as Schiffer Publishing has released two new titles sure to fascinate the audiophile: “Retro Radio: Six Decades of Design 1920s-1970s by Mike Tauber, foreword by Ron Simon, and “The Early Zenith Radios: The Battery Powered Table Sets 19221927 by Gilbert M. Hedge with Durell M. Roth. Before television and MTV, the radio was central in the home, a way for the family to gather to hear the news or listen to music. At one time, the radio was a piece of hand-crafted wood furniture and limited stations fell silent
during part of the day. In “Retro Radio over 175 images provide an impressive visual journey through the radio’s aesthetic history reflecting all the major design changes across the years. The images also reveal the diversity of materials, textures, colors, shapes, and sizes of radios of earlier ages. Pictures range from the 1920s tabletop wooden console models in the classic bread box, cathedral, and tombstone styles to the
wooden and early Bakelite and Catalin plastic art deco models of the 1930s to the 1950s, as well as the 1950s thermoplastic models in modern styling and the transistors that ascended to prominence in the 1950s and beyond. Reintroducing machines that few people see anymore and perhaps hardly know existed, the hard-cover book, “Retro Radio restores the once state-of-the-art machines’ aesthetic glory. Vintage And Original Circa-1950s “Machine Man” Robot Toy CONCEPTS 1 AUCTION HOUSE 1125 Arnold Avenue, Sells For $44,850 At Philip Weiss Auctions’ Nov. 4 Auction Point Pleasant, NJ 08742 A vintage, original, batteryo p e r a t e d “Machine Man” toy robot, made in Japan in the 1950s by Modern Toys and standing 14.75 inches tall, sailed past its pre-auction estimate of $15,000$25,000 to finish at $44,850 in an auction held Nov. 4 by Philip Weiss Auctions. The sale was held in the company’s
Lynbrook, N.Y., gallery, at 74 Merrick Ave. The robot, one of the most rare and sought after examples and part of the “Gang of Five” had a clean battery compartment but some condition issues as well, such as scuffs and scratches to the body and a missing compartment switch, but these didn’t deter bidders. It was the top earner of 684 lots offered in an auction dedicated mostly to toys, trains, toy soldiers and die-cast items. “It was a long and arduous sale, with a lot of bidding that in many cases started out low
but eventually climbed up to nice high prices,” said Philip Weiss of Philip Weiss Auctions. “We definitely worked to make this sale a success, and it was.” Around 1,500 people registered to bid online, via Invaluable.com and Proxibid.com. Many phone and absentee bids were taken as well. All prices quoted include a 13 percent buyer’s premium.

A pair of Roy Rogers-related lots was a hit with bidders. The first was a circa-1953 fiberglass horse “Trigger 10cent machine, fully operational and professionally restored, with large decals on each side reading “Roy Rogers Double R Bar Ranch. The coin-operated mechanical horse was once exhibited at the Midwest Museum of American Art and sold for $2,300. The second was a circa-1954 Roy Rogers “Nellybelle pressed steel pedal car and trailer, 68-inches long, professionally restored. The pedal car featured red steel disc wheels with chrome hubcaps, folding rear tailgate and folding windshield, and “Trigger (Roy Rogers’ horse) and “Buttermilk (Dale Evans’ horse) emblazoned on the side. It sped off for a final price of $1,955.
A tin litho Bing clockwork ferry boat, made in Germany circa 1920s for the American market, 15.5 inches long and having a flat bottom, a key on the roof with removable stack and a pair of removable flags, brought $2,300. Also, a Marklin 1gauge 4-4-2 olive steam loco and eight-wheeled tender, scored big with train enthusiasts, who drove the final price up to a commendable $2,242. Staying with toy trains, two Bassett Lowke Bing lots found new owners. One was a 1-gauge green 0-6-2 steam locomotive with a fourwheeled clockwork tender that appears to be Marklin. It sold for $1,668. The other was a live green 0-6-2 1 gauge steam Southern 736 locomotive with an eightwheeled tender. It sold for $1,495. Both lots were pulled from an old-time estate. include a new entrance that will replace a circuitous, partly-underground route through the reconstructed Public Hospital of 1773, which was the first building in North America dedicated to treatment of the mentally ill. The new gallery space - an increase of 22 percent - will enable the museums to showcase much more of their renowned collections of furniture, paintings, silver, numismatics, ceramics, tools, textiles, maps, weapons, and other media and early American folk art. Other improvements include a new lobby overlooking the pastoral site of the John Custis House and Garden, as well as a grand concourse that will provide access to both museums; enhanced programming and activities

“Seeing Britain’s captured flag in Charles Willson Peale’s portrait of George Washington at the Battle of Princeton - as British soldiers are marched off in the background - one begins to appreciate the messages and lessons revealed through these works of art and objects. With the campaign investments of our supporters, we will ensure that these tangible pieces of our national story will be even more accessible and meaningful for all Americans.” The project is an essential component of the Campaign for History and Citizenship that Colonial Williamsburg announced at a kickoff ceremony at the Capitol on Nov. 22. The comprehensive campaign supports educational and preservation efforts and has already raised more than $300 million since the start of its quiet phase in 2009 under the leadership of Colin G. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation plans a major expansion of its award-winning art museums to enrich Americans’ appreciation of their nation’s history through the power of art and material culture. The $40-million project represents the first largescale expansion and upgrade of the building that houses both the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum since its opening in 1985. When complete, the project will add 8,000 square feet of new gallery space to the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg - as the two museums are collectively known - and greatly improve public access to the building. The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg boast internationally renowned collections of American folk art through the present day and of British and American fine and decorative arts from 1670-1830. These diverse, extensive collections play critical roles in Colonial Williamsburg’s mission to inform and engage Americans in the dramatic story of their country’s founding. Expanding the museums is the top capital priority of a comprehensive, $600-million campaign that Colonial Williamsburg launched publicly on Nov. 22. “Colonial Williamsburg’s art collections both preserve and convey powerful information and insight into America’s origins and its evolution through the centuries,” said Mitchell B. Reiss, president and CEO of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Gold Rush ’49er Map To Be Auctioned At Alderfer’s On Dec. 11 A historically important map used by travelers during the gold rush of 1849 from Galena, Ill., over the Rocky Mountains to California will be auctioned on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Alderfer Auction Company in Hatfield, Pa. The map, titled “A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California With The Regions Adjoining. Compiled from the most recent authorities,” was published in 1846. It is a rare relic by itself, but this particular copy, which shows wear and damage from use, includes an ink inscription the shows that William Whiteside and his group used this copy of the map as they crossed the Rockies in 1849. The inscription also gives the names of the party members. The map also
presents ink marks indicating routes through the mountains. This map may be unique in the area of gold rush related maps because of its identification. The map measures 22-by20.5-inches and is folded into a small booklet measuring 5-by-3-inches. “If this map could only talk and give us some indication on the trials and tribulations of its history and travels, it would be amazing,” said a representative at Alderfer’s. The Whiteside party reached California in 1849 with many members becoming successful in business rather than prospecting. For additional information and photos on this item and the others in the Dec. 11 auction, visit www.AlderferAuction.com.

and museums. Colonial Williamsburg’s Campaign for History and Citizenship Colonial Williamsburg has evolved through the decades as a source of education and inspiration about the complex story of our nation’s origins. To this day, visitors to the Historic Area walk the paths and visit the halls where revolutionary ideas and debate gave rise more than 230 years ago to revolutionary acts that changed the course of world history. Colonial Williamsburg now embarks on an ambitious campaign that aims both to strengthen and reimagine its role in the 21st century as a leader in both historical preservation and history education. The foundation will use these investments to strengthen and expand the programs, staff, facilities and technological innovation necessary to advance the public’s understanding of American history and the principles on which American citizenship is based. Boosting the public launch of the campaign is a new, $13-million commitment from senior trustees Abby M. and George D. O’Neill of Oyster Bay, N.Y. Their gift, which their son Peter M. O’Neill formally
Morphy’s (Continued from page 9)
announced in Williamsburg on Nov. 22, will provide unrestricted funds to address both immediate and emerging needs throughout Colonial Williamsburg. Abby M. O’Neill is the eldest grandchild of John D. Rockefeller Jr., whose vision and philanthropy drove the founding of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation nearly 90 years ago. George D. O’Neill is founder and chairman emeritus of Meriwether Capital Corporation. Campaign fundraising to date includes $7.28 million committed toward the $40million goal. While generous donations have come from the Virginia vicinity, additional gifts have been pledged from supporters in areas including Pennsylvania and Texas who also believe that expanding the art museums is a meaningful and necessary step toward furthering the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s mission. New York-based architectural firm Samuel Anderson Architects has been selected to design the expansion. In 2006, the firm designed the space that now houses the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum when it moved from its previous location. To learn more, visit www.history.org.
