The market for modern art and design was put to the test in a two-session sale held Nov. 21 and 22, at Palm Beach Modern Auctions (PBMA) and came through with flying colors and a $1.5 million total. The 700 presented lots attracted more than 125 guests competing onsite against five constantly engaged phone lines and an Internet console that buzzed with activity from start to finish. In all, more than 1,200 online bidders from 15 countries signed up for the event, which was PBMA’s largest ever. Afterward, purchases were shipped as far afield as Japan,

Australia and Chile. “There were strong sellthrough rates in virtually all categories, and prices realized were consistently high, both in the art and furniture sections of the sale,” said PBMA auctioneer and co-owner Rico Baca. “In the auction business, it’s

On Nov. 14, Embassy Auctions International, based in Kinzers, Pa., held a large sale for the Christiana Machine Company. An array of industrial artifacts and antiques, including a collection of work incentive posters, was sold. The posters from Mather & Co., Chicago, Ill., were from 1927. Over 150 lots were sold for a total gross of $59,000. Featuring wonderful graphics and slogans, and in good condition, the posters were a highlight of the sale. Located in Christiana, Pa., the machine company is one of the oldest continuous running factories in the country. It was established in 1833 as a foundry for various custom metal work. later, it was followed by an excellent condition, deluxe, factory engraved, gold and nickel plated Winchester Model 1873 in lot 1018 that sold to a collector for $140,000. Within the first hour, the day one session had notched 1,000,000 dollars in sales. Surprising bids began to come in for every type of item. A finely carved powder horn with engravings themed around the French-Indian War in lot 1132 spurred the second biggest bidding battle of the day, shattering its $1,800 estimate by selling for $22,500. The biggest battle that occurred that day, that weekend, and arguably in the history of Rock Island Auction Company was for the contents of lot 1262, a 15th-century shirt of chain and mail identified to military powerhouse and architectural patron Qaitbay, Sultan of Egypt. The armor possessed the highest estimate in the auction, $200,000$500,000. Bidding began high in the six figures, and soon entered into seven figures. By that time, the competition was down to two phone bidders, the auction hall began to fill again with people from adjacent rooms who couldn’t believe the bids they were hearing. Eyes got wider and wider and the numbers continued upward. Auctioneer

The “Devil” Is In The Details advertising. This meant that casual video game players and parents looking for games for their children this holiday season would have very little exposure to this game prior to its release. Even more interesting was the lack of retailers who offered the option for consumers to preorder this game before its release. GameStop was one of the only known video game retailers in the United States that advertised preorders for this game with few gamers taking advantage of this option for this particular release. Most Nintendomade video games outside of limited and collector’s based editions are readily available at most stores making the option to preorder newest releases meaningless. As an avid Nintendo enthusiast and collector I chose not to preorder a copy of the “Devil’s Third.” Much like most of the games I buy I thought I would be able to go into any major retailer on Dec. 11 and pick up a copy at any time, so on that particular Friday morning my mind wasn’t even concerned with trying to get one. Less than 24 hours later, Internet forum posts would emerge alleging that virtually no major retailers outside of GameStop had any copies of “Devil’s Third” for sale and worse still, some analysts were reporting that GameStop only received a total number of 420

On Friday, Dec. 11, Nintendo released the video game known as “Devil’s Third” for play on its Wii U video game system in North America. Like most Nintendo published releases, it sells for $59.99. The game was stuck in proverbial publishing purgatory since 2013. Originally conceived and created by Tomonobu Itagaki who happens to be a well-known Japanese video game designer, the game was originally supposed to be published by the now bankrupt video game maker THQ. Upon THQ’s demise a deal was cut with Nintendo who ended up securing the worldwide rights to publish the game. This news surprised most analysts and video game enthusiasts because Nintendo has a history of shying away from ultra violent video games opting instead to produce family oriented software that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. Upon release, “Devil’s Third” was classified as an ultra violent fighting-based action game that quickly received a mature rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Complicating matters, Nintendo also opted to release the game with little to no

copies of the game for all their stores. It should be noted that there are thousands of GameStop store locations in North America alone. If this number was to be believed it would be next to impossible to secure a copy of this game and the game would easily become one of the rarest commercially available Nintendo games ever created. Ironically, Nintendo also simultaneously released the game digitally via their own e-shop which allows consumers to download almost any commercially available video game directly to their console via an Internet connection. Collectors despise this option as they want a viable physical product and not a digital download that cannot be traded, sold or collected. By Sunday, Dec. 13, it was evident that mass confusion surrounding the game was running rampant as the Internet was abuzz with complaints from concerned enthusiasts condemning Nintendo for killing the physical release of the game. Ironically, critics panned the game for its ridiculous use of violence and horrible play mechanics. Even those gamers lucky enough to get a copy were not impressed. By the time the weekend was over copies began surfacing on eBay with asking prices of $200 to $300. Meanwhile more media attention was

Happy New Year from the Burlington Antique and Art Emporium. Traditionally, January and February are the coldest months of the year. Last winter in New Jersey, there were approximately 13 snow storms of four to eight inches each. Cabin fever was rampant, and shoveling and salting became a daily activity. So far, it has been the complete opposite of last year, with temperatures are running five to ten degrees above the normal high. For all antique and collectible shoppers, the Burlington Antique and Art Emporium during the month of January will have a storewide sale of 20 to 50 percent off items of $20 or more when customers pay with cash or check, and 5 percent less with credit cards (majority of dealers are participating). Exceptions to the sale are items that have final sale tags or “firm written on the price tag. In 1998, the town of Burlington City wanted to enlarge the parking lot by tearing down the structure at 424 High Street. Scott Carlbon saved the building and created a home for 65 antique and collectible dealers selling items from the early 1800s to the collectibles of today. This building is a massive architectural wonder made of wood beams 10 inches wide and three inches thick. According to the New Jersey State Historical Society, the Emporium was built between the years of 1917 to 1924. When customers see the building for the first time they always ask, “What was this building used for? It was used to repair and service automobiles until the

late 1970s and now serves as a fantastic place for an antiques shop. The Christmas courtyard light show will go dark in late January and if you missed Santa in December he stated that he will be back next year. The Emporium h a s returned to regular hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week, with extended Set your GPS to 424 High hours until 7 p.m. each Thursday. If you suffer from St. Burlington City, N.J. or 609-747-8333 for cabin fever, the Emporium is phone directions. the place to visit.

Market-Defining Auction For Genre Fiction Swann Galleries’ Nov. 10 auction of 19th and 20th century literature featuring the Lawrence M. Solomon collection of mystery, science fiction and detective novels saw records set for multiple books, as well as an impressive auction debut for a rare Jules Verne text. “Genre fiction of the crime, mystery, detective and sciencefiction variety is alive and well in the wake of the strong results from the Solomon sale. appeared at auction for the first time. The strong prices and records ensure that Dr. Solomon’s important collection will be remembered along with other market-defining auctions, including the Goldstone, Ackerman, Neville and Lackritz sales,” said John D. Larson, Swann Galleries’ 19th and 20th century literature specialist. The top lots were flush with Hammett texts from the Solomon Collection, including a first edition of his first book, “Red Harvest,” New York, 1929, in its original dust jacket, which brought $65,000. A first edition of Hammett’s second book, “The Dain Curse,” New York, 1929, also in its original dust jacket, sold for $40,000 and set an auction record, while a first edition his iconic and influential novel “The Maltese Falcon,”

New York, 1930, also with original dust jacket, realized $27,500. Other detective novels from the collection included a scarce advance review copy of Rex Stout’s “The League of Frightened Men,” New York, 1935, the second book to feature his prolific detective Nero Wolfe, which sold for $42,500 and set a new record at auction. A first edition of John Dickson Carr’s “It Walks By Night,” New York, 1930, and a first edition of Mary Roberts Rinehart’s “The Man in the Lower Ten,” Indianapolis, 1909, both set new auction records.
