Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through MilestoneAuctions.com, LiveAuctioneers, Proxibid, and AuctionZip.

The silver bar in Milestone’s auction is one of the larger bars recovered from the wreck and has the appropriate cartouches, markings and assayer’s bite. When a dime is deposited, the machine plays the movie “Why Pearl Left Home for the Big City.” Standing 68 inches tall and with an elaborate pictorial marquee, it retains its original key. It could reach $2,000$4,000 at auction. The sale line-up includes many examples of rare advertising, such as lot 341, the circa-1900 trade sign from the headquarters of the M.P. Moller Pipe Organ Company. Made of copper and steel with gold-leaf overlay, the sign depicts the firm’s famous logo of organ pipes with decorative scrollwork. following worldwide among collectors of antique toys and games. The selection assembled for the Jan. 14 sale will include a true rarity - a bowling automaton with three bisquehead figures. Patented in 1907 by Otto Eichenberger of Switzerland with the assistance of Leon Brock in New York, the large and intricate automaton with multiple actions replicates one of the most popular leisure pursuits of the early 20th century. The machine depicts two gents – one of them poised to roll one of several steel bowling balls down a lane toward skittle pins. The other is content to sit on a barrel and watch as he smokes his pipe. A third figure emerges to reset the pins and return the balls to the bowler. The automaton carries a pre-sale estimate of $10,000-$20,000. Bidders can take time out for “The Pause That Refreshes” when lot 241 crosses the auction block. The rare 10-cent Coca-Cola Vendo 44 upright vending machine is one of the most desirable of all Coke-dispensing units. Made around the 1950s and in all-original condition, it’s ready to serve up a frosty beverage. The estimate will be $1,000-$3,000.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Protecting The Collection

By Peter Seibert All of us, at one time or another, have worried about securing our collections from theft. I have known collectors who became so paranoid about this issue that their passion for their treasures disappeared.

The positive news is that many collectibles and antiques are not going to be grabbed by the average household thief. The exceptions, of course, are coins, guns, silver, and jewelry. Those are items that are easily recognized by crooks as having value. Historic photography, depression glass, and art pottery are certainly not going to be hot on the list of items to grab for average thieves. I have always said that the best protection from thieves is anonymity. People who loudly

announce their collecting interests are openly inviting bad boys to hit them and steal their property. Keeping a low profile, being wary about who gets to see the collection, lending only to reputable museums, these are all good tips to protect your collection. Alarms work well, and I encourage people to get them, but I am wary about some of the low-price systems out there. I know that many a person has purchased the $99.99 alarm system, counted on it working, and then had it fail them.

Dogs are a preferred favorite to me, as they are clear and obvious deterrents to crooks. I like them because a barking dog, even if the dog is not visible, works well to keep folks away. One of the best things to do is to keep the collection as secure in the house as possible. Many burglars are of the grab-and-go variety. They know that time is not on their side, and so speed is of the essence. Securing items in a place where thieves cannot see them is a good step in

ensuring that no one will find the pieces. Not guaranteed, but it is a good practice, especially when combined with other protective steps. I also really recommend that folks write descriptions and take photographs of their collections. I think every collector would agree, but often the labor to do this is formidable. The value is, of course, in providing information to your insurance company and the police, but it is also vital to your family should something happen to you.

Heritage Auction

This was brought home to me some years ago when the museum was robbed of some guns. Our descriptions and photographs enabled the police and the Mayor of Lancaster to track the items down, apprehend the bad guy, and get the items back. Good descriptions saved the day. The important thing for everyone to remember is not to become paranoid about it all. Live and love your collections. Share them with your family and friends. Take precautions, and you will be safe.

His sculptures were the subject of a retrospective exhibition in 2001, presented at the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the National Gallery in Washington and the Menil Collection. After reaching a maturity in his early sculpture, created from 1946 to 1959, Twombly returned to working in three dimensions in the mid-1970s and continued to cast new works until his death. The Philadelphia Museum of Art contains one of the country’s most important collections of Cy Twombly’s works. In 1989, the Philadelphia Museum of Art became the first public institution in the United States to devote a room to the permanent display of Twombly’s art with “Fifty Days at Iliam.” From April 2012 until March 2016, a selection of six sculptures, including the five works recently given to the museum, were placed on view in the Atrium Gallery of the Perelman Building.

nature of modernity. They represent an enormously important addition to our holdings of work by this great artist, who is a key figure in the history of contemporary art. They will be united with a sixth sculpture by the artist, which is a promised gift of Keith L. and Katherine Sachs, and two important paintings from the bequest of Daniel Dietrich,” said Timothy Rub, the George D. Widener director and CEO. “For more than 25 years, our museum has dedicated a gallery to the display of Twombly’s work. The generous gift of this extraordinary group of sculptures deepens even further the strong connection between Philadelphia and the work of an artist whose influence and legacy are more than ever strong and alive,” said Carlos Basualdo, the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs senior curator of contemporary art. “I am happy that the foundation was able to make this gift, as I know how happy Cy himself would have been,” said Nicola Del Roscio, president of the Cy Twombly Foundation. The Philadelphia Museum of Art will lend “Fifty Days at Iliam” for the first time to the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, where this cycle of paintings will serve as one of the keystones of a major retrospective of Twombly’s work that will be presented through April 24, 2017. When these works return to the museum, they will be installed together with the Twombly sculptures for several months. About the artist: Cy Twombly (1928–2011) was born in Lexington, Va. He attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1947-49); Art Students League, New York (1950-51); and Black Mountain College, North Carolina (1951-52). He lived much of his later life in Rome. His work has been the subject of numerous retrospectives at venues such as Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris (1988), the Museum of The sculpture “Anabasis (Bronze),” from 2011 by Modern Art in New Cy Twombly,American, 1928-2011, is bronze and York (1994), Tate measures 46 1/16-by-19 1/8-by-19 5/16-inchModern in London es. The Philadelphia Museum of Art recently announced the acquisition of five major sculptures by Cy Twombly, one of the foremost American artists of the 20th century. This generous gift of the Cy Twombly Foundation will make these works, which were initially selected for exhibition at the museum in 2011 by the artist himself, a permanent part of the museum’s collection. These bronzes, including “Untitled, Rome,” 1980; “Rotalla, Zurich,” 1990; “Untitled, Rome,” 1997; “Victory,” conceived 1987, cast 2005; and “Anabasis (Bronze),” 2011, were chosen by Twombly because they complemented his masterful “Fifty Days at Iliam,” 1978, a suite of 10 monumental canvases that the museum acquired in 1989. Varied in size and shape, with richly textured surfaces, these works, although fundamentally abstract, are informed by a classical sensibility and clearly reflect the artist’s sustained engagement with the art of the ancient world. The sculptures will be placed on view in galleries 184 and 185, alongside related loans and works by Twombly from the collection. “The museum is deeply grateful to the Cy Twombly Foundation for this extraordinary gift. Like the artist’s “Fifty Days at Iliam,” this remarkable group of sculptures evokes the timeless themes sounded in Homer’s account of the Trojan War and offers a profound meditation on both classical history and the

appealing, then your biggest challenge is to get a realistic idea of the value of your collection on today’s market (as I’ve said before, what you paid in 1983 or what is on your appraisal from 1998 have no bearing on the value today). If you are unsure, it might be worth the cost of an appraisal from a qualified appraiser who has some expertise in your collecting area. Most convenience-minded collectors, however, simply choose one auction company to sell it all, possibly even onsite. Typically, after such auctions, all that is left in the house can be donated to a local charity or thrown out (or recycled). Then you collect your check and move on! The critical component in a successful and convenient sale is to remember what I discussed a couple of months ago: picking the best auction

company for your collection, and not just your perception of the “best” auction company. This is even more important here, because you want to find a single firm that can

sale, some of your best or rarest things might bring less than they would in a higherprofile auction, but they might also help draw a better crowd who will pay more for your other items. Of course, you may be okay with a bit less, because while convenience is easy, it’s not cheap.

Convenience. It’s what American life is all about these days, right? We can buy our lunch, pay our mortgage, borrow library books, and fill a prescription without getting out of our Wi-fi-enabled car. There is an entire category of stores based solely on “convenience.” Heck, Amazon will let you subscribe to your household staples so they show up each month without even ordering, and if you run short, you can push a button and a case of paper towels will come whizzing to your door. Antiques have never been about convenience. Buying at auctions and at shows, spending days in the car traveling from shop to shop - we may give it a cute moniker like “antiquing,” but it’s still not convenient (but it is fun, right?). But for some, when it’s time to sell the collection, convenience is king. Come pick this stuff up, and send me a check when it’s sold. Easy and done. There are lots of reasons to seek a convenient dispersal. Perhaps you are downsizing and moving to sunny Florida, and you simply don’t want the hassle of managing a sale process while you are trying to manage a move. Or perhaps you won’t be leaving your home until it’s “feet first,” but you want your kids to have an easy time unloading your collection. A plan for your stuff based on convenience is perfectly acceptable, but let me say this up front - it doesn’t

excuse you from putting some time into planning. For most collectors, a convenient dispersal involves one person or company coming in and, as I used to say in the auction business, “make it all go away.” Sure, you still want to pick a company that knows how to market and has a track record of honesty and good prices, and you still want to negotiate the best deal you can, but your top priority is to find that one entity that can do it all—that’s convenience. Depending on the composition of your collection, finding a single buyer who would be willing to write you a check and pack it all up might be possible. This tends to be a viable option for specialty collections, such as stoneware, weathervanes, model trains, etc., and less so for broader and more diverse collections. If you find this method

Estate Collections Attract Strong Bidding At Cordier’s Fall Catalog Auction An important Pennsylvanian Native American collection, a collection of Mid-Century Modern furniture, and a single-owner collection of gold coins all brought impressive results at Cordier’s Antique and Fine Arts Auction held in Harrisburg, Pa., on Nov. 12 and 13. The auction also included jewelry, porcelain, and fine art. Prices reported are hammer prices and do not include buyer’s premium. Day one opened with the single-owner collection of gold coins. Among the top performing lots was a rare 1888 $3 Princess Head gold coin, which brought $14,000. An 1855 $1 Princess Head also

did well, hammering for $5,500. In the jewelry category, a fine 2.59-CTW diamond cluster ring stood out, selling for $3,400.

The Eames chair and ottoman for Herman Miller sold for $3,000. Also sold on the first day was an expansive collection of Royal Bayreuth porcelain, featuring a leopard creamer, which fetched $2,300. Other porcelain included examples

of Cybis sculptures from the personal collection of former Cybis sculptor Lynn K. Brown. Her interpretation of Lady Godiva brought $1,300. Day two started with the Donald Leibhart estate collection of Native American artifacts, excavated in the 1950s from the owner’s property in York County, Pa. The collection garnered heavy interest from bidders on the floor as well as online and on the phones. Among the highest performing lots was a rare Popeye birdstone, which was the top lot of the auction at a hammer price of $19,000. Other highlights included a Washington Boro incised pot, selling to an internet buyer at a hammer

price of $6,000. An elegant Eames chair and ottoman for Herman Miller sold for $3,000, double its high estimate, and was one of the best performing furniture lots offered. A signed

Rococo Revival Victorian center table brought $1,800. Two pianos were also sold, including a 1972 Yamaha baby grand, which brought $2,700. In artwork, a Chinese embroidery-on-silk depicting folk tales sold for $7,500, while a beautiful landscape by turn-of-the-century artist Edmund Darch Lewis sold for $1,700. A cast bronze white Taaraa Buddha sculpture

realized $1,800. The sale was the last of four quarterly Antique and Fine Art auctions held by Cordier Auctions and Appraisals in 2016. David Cordier has already begun curating for his next cataloged Antique and Fine Art Auction, to be held in February. For additional information, call Cordier Auctions & Appraisals at 717-731-8662.
