A Single-Owner Collection Of Vintage Automobiles, Petroliana, Coke Collectibles And More Will Be Sold Sunday, Jan. 25 On-Site Sale Conducted By Tim’s Inc. Auctions Will Be In Plymouth, Conn. vast single-owner lifetime collection of vintage automobiles, petroliana items (gas station collectibles), CocaCola and Harley-Davidson memorabilia and many other items in various collecting categories will come up for bid on Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Plymouth, Conn., residence of collector Tim Donahue, who recently passed away at age 58. The auction address is 80 Keegan Road in Plymouth, a town located in west central Connecticut, situated north of Waterbury. The sale will start at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time. For those unable to attend in person, Internet bidding will be offered by Invaluable.com and LiveAuctioneers.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be taken. Donahue’s collections were as broad in scope as they were impressive in quality. In addition to the petrol and other above mentioned items, there will also be horse-themed items (Donahue was an equestrian in addition to being the owner of D&D Autoworks), antique pedal cars, telephone booths, pinball machines, two jukeboxes (one of them a Seeburg), bicycles, advertising clocks and a 1940s-era restored pull-behind camper-trailer. The auctioneer for the event will be Tim Chapulis, owner of

Tim’s Inc. Auctions, which has locations in Bristol and Litchfield. The two men knew each other; in fact, Donahue transported via flatbed truck some cars that were recently sold at Tim’s big on-site auction in Goshen, Conn., on Nov. 1. Little did Chapulis know he’d be handling Donahue’s estate auction less than two months after that event. “I was very saddened to hear about Tim Donahue’s passing, and I am equally honored to be offering to the public these large and important collections,” said Chapulis. “Everything in this auction is
in showroom condition and represents a lifetime’s worth of passionate collecting by a man who was a true baby boomer, a product of the ’50s and ’60s, the eras that he loved.” Visitors to the Donahue property on auction day will realize right away they are in for something special. The long, winding driveway, lined with vintage street lamps, leads to a spacious property Donahue called “Hooterville Farm” (after the fictional town in the hit ’60s TV shows “Petticoat Junction” and “Green Acres”). There is also a large three-bay barn on the property. Bidders will be transported to another place and time when they lay eyes on “The Hooterville Express,” a doodlebug tractor (the colloquial name for a home-made tractor made during World War II, when production tractors were in short supply), with its Ford chassis in the front and fat tires. A fully restored Allis-Chalmers tractor made around the middle of the 20th century, bright orange in color, will also be on site. Both tractors will be sold, along

with Donahue’s personally driven race car with #25 emblazoned on the doors (appropriate, since the auction is being held on the 25th); a vintage Le France flatbed truck used to transport the race car to events, customized with a unique front that resembles a fire truck; and a cranberry red 1937 Pontiac four-door convertible car with white top and suicide doors, in running condition and originally owned by the Lyons family of Thomaston, Conn., who showcased it in Memorial Day parades and other town functions. The car is estimated to sell for $20,000-$30,000.
Other vehicles will include a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, retrofitted to look just like the car from the Disney film from around that time called “Herbie the Love Bug,” complete with #53, a black racing stripe, roof rack, sunroof (rare for that vintage) and a fabric-like top; a 1978 MG two-door convertible car, black; and a pedal-driven (no motor) threewheeled Good Humor ice cream truck, restored and in mint condition, ready for displaying or selling ice cream. The classic floor-standing CocaCola vending machine by Vendo, with a box-like coin receiver at the top, will be sold.
A vintage Coca Cola vending machine dating from the mid-1940s, mailbox style by F.L. Jacobs Co. (Indianapolis, Ind.), will be sold.
Not many collectors keep antique phone booths on their property. Tim Donahue had four.
The vintage, circa-1930s CocaCola ice cooler was professionally restored and originally used in general stores before there was electricity in rural areas. Ice blocks kept the drinks cold.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Reality Television And The Antiques And Collectibles Trade Part I: The Boom Arrives
By Shawn Surmick
In 1997, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) made the decision to bring a version of the long-running British television series “Antiques Roadshow” to the United States. This would mark the official start of television’s long running love affair with the antiques and collectibles trade. Contrary to popular belief the series was not an overnight success, but it did prove popular enough to garner a loyal following of fans that grew with each passing season. It was the fans’ dedication that helped prove to other networks that television shows that catered to the antiques and collectibles market could be viable long term. It can easily be argued that if “Antiques Roadshow” would not have achieved modest success then similar television shows like “Pawn Stars” and “American Pickers” probably would not have even been attempted. Today few can dispute the
effect that reality-based television shows have had on the antiques and collectibles trade as a whole. A controversial argument can be made comparing this effect to that of the Internet and primarily eBay. While eBay changed the way we bought and sold, reality television helped change our perceptions. And while one can argue that some of these perceptions have definitely changed for the worse, we can easily make similar arguments about eBay and the rise of fraudulent transactions that increased exponentially upon its arrival. Does anyone really think that “American Pickers” hasn’t introduced countless new collectors to vintage advertising? Do toy collectors really believe that “Toy Hunter” had no influence on the steady rise in vintage toy prices? Can antique dealers continue to ignore the average person with their preconceived notions that all antiques are valuable? These are all consequences of the general public being introduced to the antiques and collectibles trade on a weekly basis. To the average viewer the collectibles market is a place where every pawn shop is supposed to introduce the seller to an expert who provides a free, unbiased

appraisal, and almost every abandoned storage unit is supposed to be lined with objects worth their weight in gold. In this instance increased awareness is both a blessing and a curse. It can be said that if “Antiques Roadshow” is credited with ushering in the start of the antiques and collectibles television boom then “Pawn Stars” deserves credit for reigniting it. “Pawn Stars” premiered in 2009 on a network known more for blackand-white war footage than of reality television. By the time the History Channel decided to take the risk and agreed to produce “Pawn Stars,” the television network was looking for ways to expand its programming. As at other networks, reality television was perceived to be a cost effective way to achieve this goal, so when the Harrison family was looking for a network to take a chance on an obscure reality show about their family-owned pawn shop, the History Channel seemed like a logical choice. Originally filmed under the name “Pawning History,” “Pawn Stars” became the first breakout hit for the History Channel. By 2010 it was clear that Americans could not get enough of everyone’s favorite pawn shop, for better or for worse. It was also at this time that lightning was about to strike twice. Around the same time that the Harrison family were in negotiations to bring “Pawn Stars” to cable television, two men and a now infamous van were also looking to make a splash. “American Pickers” would be the next great success story to premiere on the History Channel. The brain child of everyone’s favorite picker Mike Wolfe, “American Pickers” took viewers on a cross-country ride through the American countryside each and every week. With heavy doses of vintage advertising, American folklore, and good old fashioned capitalism, the first season of “American Pickers” was not without some controversy. While a definite smash hit from day one, “American Pickers” angered some viewers who raised accusations that the pickers took advantage of the

the word out to VCA’s consignors and buyers. “We wanted to allow adequate time for their client base to be notified that Victorian Casino is now the Western-states branch of Morphy’s and that Morphy’s business practices would now apply in all dealings. Morphy’s is planning a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 23 to 25, CoinOp and Advertising Auction at the Las Vegas gallery. The company’s first West Coast Classic Car Auction is tentatively scheduled for March of 2015, also at the Las Vegas branch. Five months after its acquisition by Morphy Auctions, Victorian Casino Antiques (VCA) of Las Vegas, Nev., is now officially operating under the banner of its new parent company. All signage, corporate literature, auction catalogs and other materials generated by the firm, which is known nationwide for its sales of antique advertising and vintage gambling and coin-op machines, now reflects the Morphy Auctions name. “It has been a very easy transition getting to this point,” said Dan Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions. “Our teams have blended together perfectly from day one, and our game plan for the future is right on target. Although the holidays are over, it’s Boxing Day all month at the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., where a wide array of decorative and collectible boxes will be showcased. Boxing Day became fashionable in Victorian times when servants and tradespeople received gifts from the gentry, most often in boxes. Today, boxes are used for so much more. People store treasures in them, use them both as decorative and functional organizational tools, display them to enhance home dÊcor, and, of course, for storage to pack things up for future use. At the Grist Mill, just about every type of box will be on display for sale. Those made of wood, metal, stone, paper, and plastic used for sewing, tools, jewelry, trinkets, hats, photos, and cards

elderly by focusing on and buying from older individuals. These concerns were short-lived, however, as anyone who understands the antiques trade knows that older individuals tend have more accumulations of objects of value than your average Gen X’er. By the time 2012 rolled around, Americans were getting hit with heavy doses of various now defunct realitybased television shows starring their favorite antiques and collectibles. On the A&E Network, “Storage Wars became an instant overnight success and spawned several spinoff series, most notably the short lived “Storage Wars Texas and “Storage Wars New York. By late 2014, only the original “Storage Wars would still be airing new episodes. Other networks would air their own version or multiple versions of similar shows. Shows that aired for more than one season were rare and if they survived more than two they were generally legendary. Over on the Travel Channel both “Toy Hunter and “Baggage Battles garnered heavy followers, but would not last more than three and four seasons respectively. On the Discovery Channel an interesting show called “Auction Kings premiered and would last four long seasons. Back at PBS, the arguably excellent “Market Warriors premiered in 2012 to heavy promotion, but was surprisingly canceled after 20 episodes regardless of strong ratings. With the success of both “American Pickers and “Pawn Stars solidified, the History Channel attempted even more shows devoted to the antiques and collectibles trade. “American Restoration was the first show to premier that was spun off almost directly from “Pawn Stars. Featuring the talented Rick Dale of Rick’s Restorations, who was first introduced to audiences via “Pawn Stars, “American Restoration would showcase the unique side of the business rarely seen outside of the trade.
There is no doubt that Rick Dale is one of the most talented restorers in all the trade and seeing his work every week proved to pay off for the History Channel, which still supports his series today. After “American Restoration, the History Channel would attempt other shows like “Pawn Stars with limited success. “Cajun Pawn Stars would last only a few seasons before being given the ax. Luckily, the network would strike gold with its next offering, a spinoff aptly named “Counting Cars. “Counting Cars was one of the first shows to be devoted entirely to one type of collecting field: classic cars and motorcycles. “Counting Cars stars one of the most likeable guys on television, Danny Koker, who got his start as the car expert on “Pawn Stars. As the eccentric car collector and owner of Count’s Kustoms, Koker comes across as genuine and honest in ways that most other televisions hosts cannot. “Counting Cars is still growing strong and an all new season is set to premiere soon. It is readily apparent that the current love affair between the antiques and collectibles trade and reality television is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. This begs the questions as to what impact this is having on the trade itself and what lessons we can all learn from this. I will attempt to answer these questions and more in my next column. Until then, I am going to go watch an allnight marathon of “American Pickers and enthusiastically await an upcoming vintage advertising auction!

Precious metals have long been viewed as a safe harbor for investors riding out stockmarket dips. For many, the preferred way to establish a private metals-based hedge fund has been to purchase gold, silver and other rare coins from a trusted auction house like Stephenson’s of suburban Philadelphia. The second of the two headlining collections comes from another estate already familiar to Stephenson’s. “We auctioned the actual residence

Bristol-Myers Squibb Donates N.C. Wyeth Painting To The Brandywine River Museum Of Art
N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) painted “Public Health and Morale” circa 1943. It is an oil-on-hardboard (renaissance panel) and was recently donated to the Brandywine River Museum of Art by Bristol-Myers Squibb.
given to the Brandywine River Museum of Art by the company in 1977. The paintings were commissioned for use as advertising window displays, and were also used in internal publications. “We are pleased that ‘Public Health and Morale’ will become part of the museum’s permanent N.C. Wyeth collection so that those who are inspired by the work of N.C. Wyeth, his son Andrew, and grandson Jamie, can enjoy this work for years to come,” said John Elicker, senior vice president, Public Affairs and Investor Relations, BristolMyers Squibb. “This generous gift is a wonderful addition to our renowned collection of works by N. C. Wyeth,” said Thomas Padon, director of the Brandywine Museum of Art. “‘Public Health and Morale’ powerfully evokes the patriotic spirit of America during World War II. The painting also provides a fascinating glimpse into the ideal of both the American family and industrial prowess at that time,” said Padon. Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945) was one of America’s foremost illustrators
in the twentieth century. Throughout his career, Wyeth was sought after for book and magazine commissions, but he also strove for recognition in other spheres of art. His private work includes still lifes, portraits and landscapes of Chadds Ford, Pa., and his summer property in Port Clyde, Maine. Wyeth also enjoyed a reputation as a muralist and painted advertising images. In every area, he proved himself to be an expert draughtsman and brilliant colorist. He explored various styles and mastered techniques that range from the broadly brushed to the near photographic. Wyeth set down roots and raised his family in Chadds Ford, Pa., starting an American painting dynasty that includes his daughters Henriette (1907-97) and Carolyn (1909-94), son Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) and Andrew’s son Jamie Wyeth (born 1946). The Brandywine River Museum of Art is located on
U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa. The museum is open daily, except Christmas Day, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Admission is $12 for adults; and children under six. $6 for seniors, students and For more information, children ages 6 to 12; and call 610-388-2700 or visit free of charge for members www.brandywine.org.

The Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library welcomed its 200,000th visitor of 2014 on Dec. 12, a record in a single year. The unprecedented number of guests visiting the former country estate of Henry Francis du Pont is approximately double Winterthur’s annual average and is largely attributable to the blockbuster exhibition “Costumes of Downton Abbey.” “When we decided to curate an exhibition on “Downton Abbey,” the hit PBS series embodying the British counterpart to H.F. du Pont’s American country estate, we knew it would be popular, and we are delighted that has proved to be the case,” said Dr. David Roselle, director of Winterthur. “We are planning additional exhibits and programs that we believe will appeal to lots of Winterthur’s members and friends.” “Costumes of Downton Abbey” compares and contrasts the fictional British world of “Downton Abbey” with the real-life American counterpart Winterthur in the first half of the 20th century. Arranged by time of day, the exhibition features 40 costumes plus jewelry from the smash PBS show along with clothing, silver, travel trunks, and other items of H.F. and Ruth Wales du Pont. It has attracted visitors from nearly every corner of the United States and travelers from China, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Scotland, Australia,

An unusual entry is a bronze medallion that was struck at the U.S. Mint to commemorate the “1860 First Embassy from Japan.” Signed by “Paquet,” this particular issue has been known to fetch high prices. “I’ve seen a medallion of this type sell for as much as $2,500 at auction,” noted Wakeley.
This is a 1955 United States proof set.
Rounding out the sale are Federal Reserve notes, Star notes, Columbian Exposition half dollars, state quarters (some colorized), a 2,000-grain Franklin Mint Independence Hall silver ingot, and many other sought after numismatic items.
Germany, France, England, Ireland, Canada, Nova Scotia, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, and more. Organized chronologically, “Costumes of Downton Abbey” enables visitors to experience a typical day and evening in the life of the Crawley and du Pont families. Visitors enter past a working recreation of the bell system of “Downton Abbey.” Throughout the exhibition, iconic costumes from the show, including Lady Mary’s engagement dress, Lady Edith’s wedding dress, Lady Sybil’s harem pants, and others, are on display with photos and vignettes. Servants’ uniforms and livery are contrasted with elegant tweeds, sumptuous tea gowns, and elaborate evening clothes. “Yuletide at Winterthur,” the annual exhibition celebrating the holiday traditions of H.F. du Pont and his family, opened with a “Downton Abbey” twist on Nov. 22. Both “Yuletide” and “Costumes of Downton Abbey” ran through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, when Winterthur closed to the public for the winter season. Winterthur will reopen on Sunday, March 1, 2015. Members are free to visit the Winterthur garden and estate during the winter break. The Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is located at 5105 Kennett Pike in Wilmington, Del. For more information, visit www.winterthur.org. Stephenson’s Coin Auction will commence at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. Bidders also may participate by phone, absentee or live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable or AuctionZip. “This is our first time to include Internet live bidding in one of our coin events,” said Stephenson. “We’re adding the Internet feature to more and more of our specialty sales. We tried it out with our last firearms auction and it worked very well for us, so now we’ll see how coin buyers respond to it.” The pre-auction inspection at Stephenson’s gallery will be held on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 6 p.m., or on auction Mint day from 9 to 10 a.m. The gallery is located at 1005 Industrial Blvd. in Southampton, Pa.
