The Coolfont Manor House in Berkeley Springs, W. Va., was built in 1913. It will be offered at auction by Hurley Auctions on Friday, Jan. 27. The Coolfont Manor House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will be going to auction on Friday, Jan. 27. The property, which sits on 7.3 acres at the base of Cacapon Mountain on Lake Siri in Berkeley Springs, W. Va., was built in 1913 by author and ecologist Herbert Quick. Quick chose the site to live out his “back-to-the-farm” philosophy, building the stately manor house, pond and several outbuildings as the centerpiece of his experimental farm. He called it Coolfont in honor of the springs. Coolfont was also a former fullservice resort and health spa with
year-round programs and retreats. The resort was created by Sam Ashelman and Rol and Alden Capen in 1965. The six-bedroom manor house was also the site of Coolfont Foundation’s many cultural presentations, chamber music, and poetry readings. The property will be auctioned by Matt Hurley of Hurley Auctions, Greencastle. Pa. The sale will take place on-site at 100 Manor Lane, Berkeley Springs, W. Va. on Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. For more information, contact Hurley Auctions at 866-424-3337 or visit www.hurleyauctions.com for details.

Gateway Sells Henry Lechler (Carlisle, Pa.) Long Rifle For $3,400 Gateway’s Jan. 2 auction included several quality local items of Cumberland and Franklin County, Pa., interest, such as a rare brass surveyor’s compass and long rifle. The compass, signed in script on the dial, “John Scott Chambersburg,” dates to the late 18th century, was discussed in “Crafts of Franklin Co. PA 1784-1984” by William Bowers, and sold for $4,200. The long rifle was signed by Henry Lechler of Carlisle, Pa., circa 1820. It had a 37-inch barrel, brass patchbox, brass butt plate, and tiger maple
stock. It brought $3,400. Lechler worked in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa., after earlier apprenticing with Jacob Dickert in Lancaster. As with many tradesmen, especially those who plied their craft in multiple areas, his work reflects regional traits. These include patchbox design among other overall stylistic attributes. Lechler’s son was also a gunsmith. He worked in Philadelphia. Some good 20th century adverstising was also sold. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Old Time Dealers
By Peter Seibert I was meeting with a colleague the other week and we were discussing old time dealers, shops and antique malls that we used to know. The antiques world is filled with colorful individuals, folks who are a bit on the outside of life, perhaps a bit over-the-top quirky, maybe touched with brilliance. Many Central Pennsylvanians will recall Silver Spring Flea Market on the Carlisle Pike between Harrisburg and Carlisle. Every
Sunday, one could find things from old magazines to real treasures. It was there that I met a very young Dave Cordier before he started his auction house. That was perhaps the first flea market that I went to. It was filled top to bottom with stuff, and you truly never knew what you would find there. A few years after my introduction to Silver Springs, I started to go to Dutch Village a Sunday flea market between Hummelstown and Middletown. My old friend Gus Radle ran a stand there, and I would help him out. I learned a tremendous amount about the business there. Gus would buy during the week as well as from other dealers on Sundays and then sell on Sundays. Dealers and collectors would
come early to buy. Bargains, swaps, and sales happened all the time. It was when it was fun to be in the market. I also recall driving from Harrisburg to Carlisle stopping in to see dealers and shops along the way. One elderly dealer in Hogestown used to cry whenever I would stop in. She said she would see her husband in me, and he was dead, so that brought her to tears. I never bought anything, but I always did enjoy the visits with her. Then there was the day that we went to a shop in downtown York. We pounded on the door, and after 15 minutes, a woman came and told us to go away, as there was nothing there that we would want. I still would love to know
the backstory on that one. Adamstown was another place that played a big role for me over the years. I took many trips there with my friend, Ted Wiederseim, to scout for stuff, items that could be purchased and quickly flipped. It was fun to see friends, what was new, and look to beat out the next guy finding bargains. Some Sundays, it would be brass buckets, and others it would be blanket chests. Things that came out of sales on Saturdays would come to the markets on Sunday in the Adamstown markets for resale. Folks in the antiques world tend to be very nostalgic about the past, mostly because they remember the great buys or perhaps the one
that got away. There are such discoveries waiting to be made today, as well. My memories are of great treasures
The
but, more importantly, about the wonderful, inspired, quirky folks that I knew among the antiques trade.

Online Marketing For Antique Dealers Easy And Free Social Media Marketing Platforms And Tips
Social media marketing is business marketing online using internet social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and so forth. It primarily involves the social sharing of photos, text,
main image, contact information, and your shop webpage address (if you have one). Next, begin posting engaging and relevant posts. It is also important to connect with other shops, bloggers, and industry professionals on your social media outlets. It’s a good idea to follow and learn from other shops that you admire, especially those in similar markets. Comment on their posts that interest you, and be genuine. Other people may see you have something interesting to say and click on your business profile and then follow you in return. Being present and active on the social media sites is one way to get followers and traffic. 1. Pinterest Pinterest is an amazing and free social media outlet to promote your antique business. It is actually our top referring site. On this site, you are able to “pin” graphics and videos to your account that appeal to you. How to use it? After creating a business page

by visiting Pinterest.com, pin pictures to your boards that relate to your antique business, including photos of your inventory, and link these photos back to your website (even if you sell on Ebay, Etsy, or Ruby Lane). The goal is for other people to click on your photos, go to your website, re-pin the post (for more exposure), or purchase the item (for revenue). 2. Instagram Instagram is another visual social media outlet that any antique business should look into utilizing. To post on Instagram, you will need to download the free app from the App Store to your phone or iPad. At this time, you cannot post to Instagram from your computer, you must use a mobile device. How to use it? Post photos taken or saved on your phone. You can use photo filters to increase the picture’s attractiveness. Use hashtags to tag key words related to the picture you are posting. For example, for a piece of antique jewelry you might want to hashtag #AntiqueJewelry. You can also write text about the piece in the text box. 3. Facebook To make a Facebook business page, you must first have a personal page. Facebook is a free social network, where you can post pictures, update your statuses, share videos, and connect with other people who have facebook profiles. How to use it? Put in all of your pertinent business information, including a physical address, a main image (use your logo if you have one), and post status updates. People can “like” your profile, which means they then follow your page. To begin getting followers, you can invite friends that you are already connected with on your personal page. Share articles, post pictures, follow pages that interest you, and have fun connecting with your customer base. 4. Coin-Op Event To Feature A Breathtaking Selection Quality Antique Arcade, Vending, And Gambling Machines To Be Offered At Morphy’s Jan. 28 And 29 Sale Charles Fey Liberty Bell slot machine and shipping crate, rings true with its $150,000$250,000 estimate. This 1895 example, in working, all original, untouched condition, is considered the apex of all coin-op gambling machines ever manufactured. Lot 903, a circa 1905-10 five-cent Caille Liberty package gum slot machine, believed to be the only known surviving example, is estimated at $120,000$225,000. This royal flush example is in working, untouched, all original condition, including the marquee with its paper award card. Lot 5, a late 1930s fivecent Mills Novelty Co. Hoke Snake slot machine estimated at $25,000-$50,000, features a distinctive serpentine motif on the upper and lower castings along with the skill element. To the best of our expert’s knowledge, this is the only known example with this amazingly eye-catching detailing. And it’s a grand
