Reading Museum Hosts Exciting New Exhibit

FRIDAY JANUARY 29, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 5

The Whitemyer Family Collection

The Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pa., is pleased to host “The Tsars’ Cabinet,” which highlights 200 years of decorative arts under the Romanovs, from the time of Peter the Great in the early 18th century to that of Nicholas II in the early 20th century. Many of the more than 230 objects in the nationally touring exhibition were designed for public or private use of the tsars or other Romanovs. Others illustrate the styles that

were prominent during their reigns. The “Tsars’ Cabinet” is on view through Sunday, April 17 in the Second Floor Temporary Galleries. The exhibition is made possible at the Reading Public Museum by generous support of the The Marlin and Ginger Miller Exhibition Endowment. Porcelain, glass, enamel, silver gilt and other alluring materials make this extensive exhibition dazzle. The items demonstrate the evolution of style from the European Classicism of the court of Catherine the Great, to the rich oriental motifs of mid-19th century Russian Historicism of the Kremlin and

One of the most distinctive tables to have come out of the Zoar community over the years was this example in black walnut, having raised diamonds on the drawer fronts and a smaller raised diamond in between them. It was gaveled down for $3,500 to a collector. Both the frame and the drawers were dovetailed.

This photo, taken about the time of the Civil War from the roof of Zoar’s “Number One House,” shows a view of the separatist communal settlement in its heyday, with its many quaint Germanic buildings. The framed enlargement was one of two that sold together for a winning bid of $100.

A hanging Zoar bonnet cupboard in black walnut and with rat-tail hinges was the highest priced lot in the auction at $8,000, bought by a collector in neighboring Wayne County. In excellent original condition, the cupboard had a sliding wooden latch bar with a unique ivory rub plate on the door. The Whitemyer family had reportedly paid $10,000 for the cupboard when it was acquired years ago.

The stunner of the auction was this 10-plate cast iron stove made at the Zoar Furnace foundry around 1830. Over the years these rare stoves have routinely brought between $2,000 and $3,000 when they come to market. This example, however, fetched only $600, leaving auctiongoers wondering, “What just happened?” with one onlooker saying, “I should have bid.” It had a hairline crack in the top plate.

auction in the area contain a smattering of Zoar items, no truly major collections of Zoar pieces have crossed the block for over two decades. The antique auction of Tim and Tiffany Whitemyer, handled by Kaufman Auctions of Sugarcreek, Ohio, comprised the most diverse and impressive agglomeration of Zoar material to be gaveled down in memory, collected by two generations of the family. But given the fact that many veteran Zoar collectors have died or ceased collecting in the intervening years, coupled with the general retreat of prices during much of the past decade and the fact that few young people seemed interested in the specialized market, everyone wondered what to expect ... and mostly how much prices would be tumbling.

Jack Adamson (with hat), Zoar’s long acknowledged historian and a collector of items associated with the community, talks with a collector from Ohio who purchased the unusual Zoar pin-top work table with diamond panels in the front. Adamson had bought the table from a Zoar home in about 1979, and had owned it for a number of years before selling it to the Whitemyer family.

The Whitemyer auction contained numerous examples of distinctive Zoar basA distinctive Zoar sofa in black walnut, with paneled arms and turned spindle ketry in many shapes and sizes. The baskets in the above group ranged in price from $60 to $250, with the larger examples bringing the higher prices. back was knocked down for $1,500. In the end, it turned out there was little to be concerned about. Long story short, prices across the board seemed fairly strong and commensurate with the quality of the merchandise offered. The 352 catalogued lots, along with scores of uncatalogued items worked in throughout the sale, fetched just under $70,000. There were

129 registered bidders and friends/spouses who crammed into the Kaufman warehouse facility in Sugarcreek. Attendees came from across Ohio, as well as Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. In addition, said Terry Stanford of Kaufman Auctions, there were 104 registered online bidders who did their share of bidding. Seven of the furniture pieces carried reserve bids, and while most of the reserves were not reached, the owner made the decision to sell in nearly all of the cases. There was some wariness among bidders going into the sale, because in the weeks preceding the auction the Whitemyers had been bringing collectors and other individuals to the auction site selling several items out of the collection. Through that private sale the Ohio Historical Society was able to acquire an extremely rare early calendar clock crafted in the Zoar community, and a diminutive paint-decorated and dated Zoar cupboard was sold to a local collector who had it for sale at the Hudson Antiques Show shortly thereafter. The Hudson show took place Jan. 9 and 10 in Hudson, Ohio. The highest bid of the auction was garnered by a Zoar hanging bonnet cupboard. Crafted of black walnut with rat-tail wrought iron hinges, detailed cornice molding and an unusual wood and ivory slide catch, it sold to a collector in an adjacent county for $8,000. The next highest bid was brought by a distinctively Zoar-style two-piece flatwall cupboard in butternut. Having three exceptionally deep drawers across the front and a strong cornice molding, it sold for $5,500 to a New Jersey buyer. Another distinctive Zoar piece, a black walnut pin-top work table having diamond panels on the fronts of the two

Eventually, however, tourism came to Zoar, and in ways great and small it led to the eventual dissolution of the community in 1897. Because of the uniqueness of its character, antiquarians in the region have long been drawn to the items made and used there. In the 1970s and ‘80s a succession of well-publicized house auctions threw a red hot antiquing spotlight onto Zoar - which has 10 buildings restored and operated by the Ohio Historical Society. Prices for items associated to the community soared astronomically as they were snapped up into both public and private collections. But in recent years interest in the community has deteriorated along with many of the early buildings there. While many collections that come to

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT

This Week: Signs

Peter Swift Seibert It was just before Christmas and I decided to head to the local antiques mall looking for a few last minute gifts. Regular readers know that I love giving antiques as Christmas gifts especially things like delivering a plate of cookies on a piece of Staffordshire. Fun, elegant and reasonable. So my daughters and I headed out to the mall to see what we could find. As we approached the door of the co-op, I was struck by the number of signs peppering the exterior. There were of course the obligatory hours of operation and

ÂĽ

open/closed signs. But then the co-op management had decided on a host of other signs. “No pets except for seeing eye dog and “Children must be monitored at all times. There were signs reading no backpacks or large purses (what does that really mean?) or packages! And the one that really irritated me, “Credit card purchases would be charged with a fee based upon a percentage of the transaction. Now I do question whether the credit card companies allow these fees to be passed on to the consumer. My memory is that such practices are not permitted. More to the point, this is a case where the mall management is completely missing the point of what an antiques mall is about. It is about the customer! Now I know that some of you are thinking I am overreacting. But when you get inside the mall, the signs don’t stop. They repeat the messages of the exterior over

and over with the addition of another sign that tells guests that they must take a number in order to be served for any reason. So, I have to use this disaster of a co-op to remind us all that the only way antiques collecting will grow and prosper as a hobby is if there are new people involved. Retailers all over the world understand this. The merchandise is not as important as the guest. Yes, there are thieves and pickpockets and stupid people, but the reality is that most people do not fit into these categories. Treating us all like criminals and cattle in order to protect the merch is missing the point completely. It is about the guest. I stand by my rant and look forward to seeing that mall wake up and realize that the customers come first and not the merchandise. Until then, they won’t get my business nor that of others who are as offended by their silly signs as I was.

Gruppe’s peaceful “Gloucester Morning,” featuring several fishing vessels in port, is estimated at $10,000$15,000. Top Maine picks include an interior scene of two women arranging flowers by Abbott Fuller Graves (estimated at $10,000-$15,000); Walter Schofield’s “Coast of Maine” (estimated at $17,500$22,500); and an outstanding Waldo Peirce painting of children frolicking with wild animals, estimated at $8,000$12,000. This charming and playful example is dedicated to Ninette Blanc and comes with full provenance. Day one will also include a selection of other fine works, including Old Masters. A portrait of a gentleman by Johann Baptist, “Lampi the Younger” will have hearts aflutter with its $20,000-$30,000 estimate. And collectors will no doubt take a double look at an important recent discovery of a bronze attributed to Edvard Munch and signed “E Munch.” Titled “Sostrene,” this neverbefore-seen sculpture depicts

A set of costume armor and a prop gun from “Judge Dredd” Buena Vista International, 1995, sold for $30,000. Asian arts enthusiasts will find their cups running over in regards to this auction’s finely carved large rhino horn scholar’s landscape cup. This 17thcentury rarity depicts multiple scholars painting, drinking tea, and reading poetry, all underneath a canopy of pine amidst a mountainous backdrop. It is estimated at $25,000-$35,000. Fine jade selections include a broad range of pendants, carvings and snuff bottles. A large He Tian jade pendant (estimated at $25,000-$35,000) and a jade Buddhist monk with a begging bowl, estimated at $15,000$25,000, will have competing bidders seeing green. The Dolph Lundgren costume from “Rocky IV” MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, 1985, consisting of a red satin jacket together with a pair of matching boxing shorts and red leather boxing shoes worn by the actor as “Ivan Drago” in his iconic fight against “Rocky Balboa” realized $45,000. airmail flight. In May 1918, a single page of 100 stamps was sold to William T. Robey, a cashier from Washington, D.C. He purchased the only misprints of this stamp to fall into private hands. The misprint shows the “Jenny” upside down. Four inverted “Jennies” from this original block of 100 were sold at auction in October 2005 for $2.7 million. In 2013, the USPS reissued the “misprinted” inverted Jenny stamps in an edition size of 2.2 million sheets to commemorate this historical gaffe. But in a marketing twist, the USPS secretly produced 100 sheets of the Jenny stamp right side up, creating a “misprint “ of the original misprint. To date, of the 2.2 million sheets produced, approximately half have been sold and only 24 “non-inverted” stamp blocks have been found. The USPS later admitted that creating the 100 sheets of right side up Jenny stamps broke important rules and protocol. In

Collectors also bid on Stallone’s personal mementos, gathered across his storied career. Chief among those items were a pair of 1980 Muhammad Ali training worn gloves inscribed to Stallone, “To Sly, Muhammad Ali, Sept 23-80,” which sold for $47,500. The gloves were presented to Stallone by the reigning Heavyweight Champion just nine days before he would surrender that title to Larry Holmes in a one-sided Caesar’s Palace affair. A pair of boxing trunks from “Rocky IV” MetroGoldwyn-Mayer/United Artists, 1985, made of satin with red and white stripes, blue waistband and trim, added silver appliqué stars on trim, and purposely distressed

related to Stallone’s “Rambo” film series and other movies were also popular, especially when it came to the items worn by Stallone in the first installment of the film series, “First Blood.” The canvas poncho Mr. Stallone created as the character John Rambo, and wore in the wilderness, sold for $60,000 against a presale estimate of $10,000. “The memorabilia I have has been used and been a part of my life for, kind of hard to admit this, well over 40 years,” said Stallone. “It’s been in my possession and I have fond memories attached to just about every object. There comes a point, though, when I think that I’ve used these objects enough and have created enough memories that I can let them go.”

The top lot in the auction was the iconic black leather jacket that Stallone wore as Rocky Balboa in the beloved, award-winning first “Rocky” movie, which established Stallone as a superstar. It was the subject of spirited bidding for several minutes before finishing at $149,000. “The leather jacket Mr. Stallone personally owned and then wore as a costume in the first ‘Rocky’ movie was expected to sell for $75,000 but was bid to $149,000,” said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. “It’s a true piece of Hollywood history, so emblematic of the character and the times. It’s not surprising to see fans moved to bid like this for such an iconic costume.” Hollywood memorabilia

Enthusiastic fans of Sylvester Stallone placed more than $3 million in winning bids in person, by phone and online from around the world in “Stallone - The Auction,” held Dec. 18 through 20 on hundreds of his iconic costumes, props and personal items. The sale was conducted by Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles, Calif. Stallone briefly addressed the audience at the start of the auction, posed for photos with fans and then stayed through several hours of the first day’s bidding. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated by Stallone to various charities including ones that assists military veterans and wounded servicemen and servicewomen.

Focus Exhibition To Present Recent Discoveries About Iconic Van Eyck Diptych “A New Look at a Van Eyck Masterpiece,” is a focus exhibition opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, Jan. 25, which will present the findings of a recent study of Jan van Eyck’s “Crucifixion” and “Last Judgment” paintings (circa 1440-41). In a collaboration at the Met between Maryan Ainsworth, a curator in the Department of European Paintings, and the Department of Paintings Conservation, these paintings and their frames have undergone technical investigations in an effort to solve longstanding mysteries about them. Whether the paintings were always intended as a diptych, or whether they were originally the wings of a triptych whose centerpiece has long disappeared, has been in question. The answer may be found not only in a closer look at the frames, but also in the relationship of the Metropolitan’s “Crucifixion” painting to a recently rediscovered drawing of the “Crucifixion” attributed to Jan van Eyck (circa 1390-1441) that has been acquired by the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, and will also be on view in the Met’s exhibition. New infrared reflectogra-

phy now affords an opportunity to compare the underdrawings of the “Crucifixion” and “Last Judgment” paintings with the Rotterdam drawing. In addition, X-radiography of the paintings’ frames has revealed another text, albeit very damaged and fragmentary, on the flat part of the frame beneath the gold overpaint. The text is in Flemish, in Gothic miniscule script, as opposed to the Latin pastiglia (raised lettering) on the interior cove of the two frames. This introduces new

clues regarding the original form and function of the two paintings, as the exhibition will demonstrate. An accompanying publication, “An Eyckian Crucifixion Explored: Ten Essays on a Drawing,” will present the views of leading scholars on the newly discovered “Crucifixion” drawing and its relationship to the Met’s painting. It will be published by the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum. Additional objects drawn from the Metropolitan Museum’s collection will be presented as contextual material and will include paintings by Fra Angelico and Pietro Lorenzetti, prints, a rosary bead, boxwood and ivory diptychs, illuminated manuscripts, enamelwork, and portrait medals. The technical investigation of the Metropolitan’s “Crucifixion” and “Last Judgment” is part of a longer ongoing study of Van Eyck’s works, including the cleaning and restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece, one of the seminal works of Western European art, and a comprehensive study of the artist’s oeuvre through the Verona Project at the Institut royal du Patrimoine artistique

Remember The Maine, Through Collectibles 1886, she was launched in 1889, and was commissioned in 1895. After several years spent patrolling the East Coast and Caribbean, orders sent the Maine and her crew to Cuba in response to continued civil unrest on the island.

From Our Files By Andrew Richmond The story of the famed battleship U.S.S. Maine began in the late 1880s. Construction was authorized in August of

Three weeks later, on the morning of Feb. 15, 1898, the battleship Maine lay in Havana harbor. Just after the playing of “Taps,” Captain Charles Sigsbee recalls, “I laid down my pen and listened to

According to tradition, this handpainted glass goblet was presented to Charles Sigsbee by the crew of the Maine in 1897 when he was promoted to captain and given command of the ship. Cowan’s sold it for $646 in 2010.

Such a significant breach caused the ship to sink rapidly, but tragedy occurred almost instantly for the many enlisted men sleeping in the forward section of the Maine. Van Eyck Diptych (KIK/IRPA) in Brussels. A Sunday at the Met program on Sunday, April 17, will present the findings of these groundbreaking investigations. This small exhibition is the latest in a series of highly focused presentations initiated by the Museum’s Department of European Paintings as part of their technical investigations of key paintings in the Met collection. Another exhibition in the series, now on view, examines the creative process of Andrea del Sarto by looking closely at his “Holy Family with the Young Saint John the

Baptist.” Previous exhibitions in the series have featured Cranach’s “Saint Maurice” and Goya’s portraits of the Altamira family. The purpose of these installations is to share the latest technical findings that have bearing on connoisseurship issues, such as attribution, dating, and artists’ methods, of the most important paintings in the Metropolitan Museum’s collections. “A New Look at a Van Eyck Masterpiece” is organized by Maryan Ainsworth, Curator in the Department of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This log cabin quilt top is attributed to Anna Jane Parker (Mrs. Charles E. Parker), probably St. Louis, Mo, 18751900, and is made of silks and cottons. It was a gift of Jean and Jerry Jackson, 2012.609.1. Image courtesy of The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.

twentieth century represented in the exhibition is those quilts from the Gee’s Bend, Alabama vicinity. These quilts are renowned for their innovative use of color, pattern, asymmetry and the free adaptation of traditional quilt designs. “The stunning bedcovers showcase the lively tradition of African-American quilting in the century-and-a-quarter following the abolition of slavery in America. Many of the quilters worked with a freedom from convention that sets their work apart. The exhibition promises to be an exciting visual experience for all of our visitors, not just those who love quilts,” said Linda Baumgarten, curator of textiles and costumes at Colonial Williamsburg. Among the highlights of the exhibition, is a graphically eye-catching log cabin quilt top, probably made between 1875 and 1900 by the formerly enslaved Anna Jane Parker (Mrs. Charles E. Parker, born circa 1841 in N.C.), in St. Louis, Mo. According to Anna Jane’s granddaughter, Helen Edmonia McWorter Simpson, to whom the quilt descended, she worked as a seamstress and “sewed beautifully.” Helen would have seen her grandmother’s craftsmanship first-hand, because Anna Jane lived with Helen, daughter Edmonia and Edmonia’s husband John McWorter after she This appliquéd quilt top, maker unknown is from was widowed. The lively tradition of quilting in America following the abolition of slavery (from the 1870s to approximately 1990) will be revealed in a new exhibition, “A Century of African-American Quilts,” which will open on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, one of the art museums of Colonial Williamsburg. Freedom from convention sets these examples apart from ordinary, more common place, appliqué and piecing techniques. The exhibition features twelve quilts, six never before exhibited. This show is part of a larger program of activities and special events organized by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in celebration of Black History Month. “The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is known for its outstanding collection of British and American quilts, but our growing assemblage of African-American quilts has received relatively little exposure,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the Foundation’s vice president for collections, conservation, and museums and its Carlisle H. Humelsine Chief Curator. “It seems particularly appropriate to share a substantial number of these striking objects in a single showing as we celebrate the historical and cultural contributions of black Americans.” Depending on the location of the quilter, the purpose for which the quilt was made and the quilter’s personal artistic vision, these AfricanAmerican-made covers varied widely during the time period explored in “A Century of AfricanAmerican Quilts.” Some of the women who made the pieces adapted or were inspired by their Anglo-American neighbors. Others appear to have been guided by their own artistic vision, informed and influenced by their African heritage. An especially unique regional group from the

Toy Train Collection Headed To Bertoia In the pantheon of antique train collecting, there are literally thousands of wonderful private collections that reflect their owners’ dedication to the hobby. But at the top of the train-collectors’ pyramid are those few names that everyone knows because of what they represent - toys of such rarity and quality, they would be unattainable by most. That short list of revered names includes, without question, Jerry and Nina Greene, whose private collection will be

offered in a series of auctions at Bertoia’s starting with a Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10 sale. “The Greenes’ collection is phenomenal. It’s one of the largest and most comprehensive toy train collections in the world,” said Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia. “Because it is so vast, we really can’t estimate how many auctions will be required to sell it all. It’s a major undertaking and one that we’re very proud to partake in.”

The cover of Bertoia’s auction catalog for their April 9 and 10 auction containing Part I of the Jerry and Nina Greene private collection of antique toy trains.

At the series premiere, which will take place one week before the April York Train Meet, collectors can expect to see some of the best from Marklin, Bing, Lionel, Ives, American Flyer, Carlisle & Finch, and Voltamp, to name but a few of the prestigious brands represented. Also, there will be a wealth of stations and accessories, which the Greenes particularly loved to collect. “Jerry and Nina didn’t buy with just rarity in mind, they were also uncompromising when it came to condition. Even those pieces that aren’t the only known survivors are

(1913-96), who was raised in poverty in Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The quilt makers and their quilts from this isolated community of mostly rural African Americans descended from enslaved families have achieved international acclaim, and this example proves why. A dramatic and unusual choice of black and white with shading from grey to blue for the lone star pattern (the design is more commonly worked in multicolor), Indiana adapted the traditional design. This quilt, based on its faded, stained and mended condition, was clearly functional and well used for many years. Older, printed cotton was used as a filling and can be seen beneath the white areas of relatively thin double knit fabric. A bright, daisy print in yellow, orange, brown and white backs the quilt and forms a narrow finishing edge around the front. Fascinating use of symbolic images in an appliquéd quilt made by Dora Smith (working circa 1901) in DeKalb County, Ga.,

makes her quilt another highlight of the exhibition. The longtime oral tradition that was passed down with the quilt was that the names appliquéd on it were those of the quilt maker’s children (Liza, Amos, Ruth and Toby), and the initials “DS” are appliquéd on it as well. Although genealogical research reveals several AfricanAmerican women in Georgia named Dora Smith, none of them located thus far, however, had any children with these names. In addition to the initials and names on the quilt, the maker also included the words “CATS,” “DOGS,” “BOYS,” and “GIRL” along with motifs including scissors, a kettle, stars, the moon, crosses, snakes, abstracted human figures, a hand and an eye, all of which were taken from domestic life and the environment. A new acquisition to the Colonial Williamsburg collection and never before exhibited tied quilt made by Susana Allen Hunter (1912-2005), is another

centerpiece of “A Century of African-American Quilts.” Susana left a legacy of at least 100 artistic quilts and despite her poverty - or perhaps because of it - she expressed herself by making warm, useful quilts for her family, and used whatever fabrics were available to recycle from worn-out denim work clothes to synthetic curtains and dresses. Around 1970, Susana and her husband, Julius, moved to Dallas County, Ala., where she remained after his death. She eventually moved to Mobile, where she lived until her death in 2005 with her grandson Tommie and his wife, Susie. This tied quilt came from Tommie’s collection. Combining remnants of used clothing, including a grey-blue diamond-pattern polyester dress, tied to the backing with brilliant red yarn knots with long tails left on the front of the quilt, this dynamic design is backed with cut apart and opened, 100-pound sugar and flour sacks. An appliquéd counterpane

made by an unknown quilter in possibly Baltimore or New York State (circa 1920), is a dynamic bedcover attributed to an African-American stitcher, partly because some of the motifs, including a cross, hearts, chickens, human figures and others relate to African textiles. The quilt’s former owner, a prominent scholar of AfricanAmerican art, has identified African cosmology motifs found in it: the chicken accompanies the soul to the other side, the eight-pointed stars symbolize perfection or God, the shortarmed cross appears in art from the Congo and the hearts may refer to memories. The angels beneath the central cross may memorialize two young AfricanAmerican sisters who died in one of the epidemics of the early twentieth century, and their white faces symbolize the fact that they had died. Made as a collage of cotton and silk fabrics with lace, braids, beads, buttons and window shade pulls, the textiles were fastened

to white cotton ground fabric using a variety of stitching methods, including traditional appliqué with slip stitches, calling to mind conventional Baltimore Album Quilts, as well as chain, running stitches and machine stitching. Some of the cotton shapes were gathered prior to being stitched to the ground, which creates texture and depth. Yellow cotton satin backing forms a wide border when brought to the front. “A Century of AfricanAmerican Quilts” is made possible through generous gifts from The Stone Family Fund of Los Angeles, Calif., and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Mich. Not only a celebration of the rich tradition of post-abolition, African-American handcrafts, “A Century of African-American Quilts” is certain to appeal to quilting and folk art aficionados of all walks of life. sewing skills and access to silk dress materials from her work as a seamstress and is the most likely quilt maker. For this never-before-exhibited quilt, the maker assembled a colorful array of textiles, including patterned dress silks, upholstery fabrics and ribbons, and combined them with black to create a stunning dark and light diamonds design. Typically, Log Cabin quilt pieces are assembled and stitched onto a foundation textile. Here, a wide variety of everyday and mismatched cottons were used to form the foundation, because that element was eventually hidden by the decorative pieces. This quilt remained unfinished without any batting or backing. Another visually striking quilt to be shown in “A Century of African-American Quilts” is a star quilt made circa 1970 by Indiana Bendolph Pettway

still in a class of their own because they’re simply the finest examples you could ever hope to own. To see so much quality and rarity in a single collection is very unusual, but to see consistently fine condition on top of that takes the collection to a whole new level,” added Rich Bertoia. Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions, remarked that part of the excitement about being chosen to auction the collection has been getting to know the owners themselves. “With their superior knowledge aside, it has been a pleasure to be around collectors such as the Greenes, who demonstrate a refined taste and passion in collecting that
