The Hudson Show: Reborn And Recharged By Karl Pass “This is a great show, and I think it’s the best it has ever looked,” commented exhibitor Susan Wirth in regard to the 2017 edition of the Hudson Antique Show. In its 45th year (fourth under manager and promoter Steve Sherhag), the show took place on Jan. 7 and 8 at the Clarion Inn in Boston Heights, Ohio. Just outside the town of Hudson in the northeast part of the state, the

quality Americana show had 53 dealers. Temperatures hovered in the single digits much of the weekend, but clear skies prevailed, and devout supporters/patrons of the show came out in force. “We had about 625,” said Sherhag. “I think the show was successful, and I was pleased with the quality and variety of things.”

The PBS television series “Antiques Roadshow,” the network’s most-watched ongoing series, will visit Harrisburg, Pa., for the first time as part of its 2017 summer tour. As part of the show, WITF will host an all-day appraisal event on Saturday, June 3, at a yetto-be-disclosed location. Three one-hour episodes will be produced from the Harrisburg event for inclusion in the 14-time Emmy Award nominated production’s 22nd broadcast season, to air in 2018. “‘Antiques Roadshow’ is so excited to visit Harrisburg in our enduring search for the country’s hidden treasures,” said executive producer Marsha Bemko. “With a first-time stop in the city, I can’t wait to explore the new area and see what local items we uncover.” Admission to the show is free, but tickets are required and must be obtained in advance. Fans can apply now for a chance to receive one pair of free tickets per household. To enter a drawing for free tickets to the event, and to see complete application rules, visit www.pbs.org/antiques/tickets. Deadline for applications is

Monday, April 10. “Antiques Roadshow” is also accepting furniture submissions for the 2017 tour. The series is looking for a few pieces of furniture in each city to appraise and display on the set. Selected pieces will be transported to the event and back at no cost to the owner. For details, visit http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/road show/furniture/. At each appraisal event, approximately 5,000 ticketed guests will receive free valuations of their antiques and collectibles from specialists from the country’s leading auction houses and independent dealers. Each guest is invited to bring two items for appraisal. The following are summer tour dates and cities: Harrisburg, Pa., June 3; Green Bay, Wis., June 17; St. Louis, Mo., July 8; New Orleans, La., July 22; and Portland, Ore., Aug. 12. The series is produced by WGBH Boston and seen by an average of 8 million viewers each week. Its 21st broadcast season is currently airing Mondays at 8 p.m. (Eastern time) on PBS. Collector Anecdotes And Antics The Antiques That Are Still En Vogue

5. Tiffany art glass and related vintage art glass. The most controversial entry on the list by far! Critics will lament that prices have fallen from their highs of the glory days when antiques were actively pursued by collectors, investors, and decorators alike. Still, collectors are buying and with prices being lower than just a few years ago, now is the time to buy. Tiffany has brand-name recognition and sells itself. Meanwhile, pieces made by Steuben and Fenton have already suffered price corrections. As a result, most pieces will not be falling much further if things hold steady. Tiffany is still one of my favorite art glass makers by far, but use caution when buying any piece of Tiffany glass. The number of reproductions and fakes in existence can fool all but the most knowledgeable collectors.

antique bottle collecting would be dead in 10 to 20 years. Ironically, it was the generation of collectors between the ages of 25 and 50 that helped save it. Today, antique and vintage glass bottles are one of the most sought-after antiques due to the simple fact that they serve a dual purpose. Not only do these glass artifacts serve as a historical reminder of the past, but they also make incredible pieces of art to readily display. It is this aspect that makes collecting these discarded treasures of yesteryear so popular with collectors young and old. Hint to investors - unique poison bottles are making a comeback due to younger collectors wanting to own an interesting piece of history that can readily be displayed as a conversation piece. Look at that category along with bitter bottles for the most growth.

Naysayers have predicted the demise of the antiques trade many times before. Please don’t believe them. The market was never dying; it was

3. Vintage coin-operated devices. This category is starting to show up in a lot of my articles for a reason. Forget stand-up video games. Those games are much less worth buying, as they can readily be emulated on any mobile phone. The real money is in vintage pinball machines made after 1975 and older slot machines and trade simulators. Out of all the auctions I attend, I have never seen a vintage coin operated machine sit unsold if the price 4. Antique and vintage was right. Expect this trend to bottles. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years or are uninformed about the overall pulse of the current antiques marketplace, it is no secret that things have changed. Back in the 1990s, generalized antiques and primitives were considered blue chip investments, each experiencing parabolic growth. Flash forward to the present day, and this just simply isn’t the case anymore, with a lot of investments once considered blue chip suffering double-digit losses. Antique furniture, general primitives, and vintage pottery have all suffered market corrections due to changing tastes of fickle consumers. Meanwhile, the overall antiques and collectibles marketplace is experiencing a massive shake-up due to a previous generation of mega collectors downsizing and cash-strapped younger collectors buying items that appeal only to them. This has had an enormous effect as to what is selling at auction houses around the country, and the result is nothing short of extraordinary. If you haven’t had time to go to an auction as of late, now may be the time. Mid-Century Modern furniture, vintage posters, advertising collectibles, and esoteric items, some of which were once thought to be

almost worthless just a few years ago, are breaking auction records like never before. Listed below are five bona fide collecting categories that have successfully bridged the generational gap and are actively being acquired by both younger and older collectors alike. I have written about some of these popular collecting categories before, but investment-minded collectors may wish to consider adding some of these items to their own growing collections.

simply changing. Much like the fact that Western-based toys and collectibles are no longer selling for the values and popularity they once held, the overall antiques market still has several high-powered collecting categories ready and willing to experience growth. The trick is to stop listening to critics and auctioneers who don’t seem to understand that there is only one constant in the trade - change. And to quote the words of a very knowledgeable man by the name of Harry Rinker, who once offered me some great words of wisdom: “Time is a friend and an enemy. Beware of those who measure time only in decades.” Thank you, Harry, as I never forgot the advice you gave me back when I wrote you that email on June 5, 2012. (Note to readers: If you wish to read it, the actual column it appeared in is titled ‘What Guarantee?’) I’ll see you all in the future. What an exciting time it is sure to be!

2. Vintage advertising. One of the biggest surprises to come out of a post “American Pickers” era. Soda collectibles rank as the number one blue chip investment in this category, with newcomers such as vintage Nintendo advertising ready to take an even bigger share of the market moving forward. Even younger collectors can relate to vintage CocaCola advertising. Reality television focusing on the antiques trade has really had an impact in this segment of the market. I cannot tell you how many younger collectors ask me about how best to intelligently acquire pieces in this category.

in price, and this is being propelled by collectors under 50 years of age. Visit any major metropolitan city, and at least one dealer specializing in this period has set up shop. Thanks in part to its lightweight, forward-thinking designs, along with excellent craftsmanship, younger collectors who are tired of the low-quality, massproduced particleboard pieces occupying big box stores are buying in droves. The bad part, authentic Mid-Century Modern pieces can command high four figures, with some pieces hitting the mid to high three-digit mark. As a result, this collecting category is appealing to wealthier younger collectors and is not being purchased by cash-strapped 20- and 30somethings fresh out of college with massive amounts of debt.

John F. Long (18941984) of Reinholds, Pa., by profession was a carpenter and house painter, but was widely known for his reverse painting on glass. Long was a self-trained artist and produced over 1,000 reverse paintings on glass over the course of a 60-year period. He spent his entire life in the rural Pennsylvania German West Cocalico Township community of Reinholds. On Jan. 2, Art Pannebecker and Brad Wolf Auctioneers Inc. of Denver, Pa., sold a dozen paintings by Long at Renninger’s Market in Adamstown, Pa. top Western examples known. All are relatively fresh to the market. And many bottles in John O’Neill’s collection are one-of-a-kinds or extremely rare.” Highlights of the Madruga collection will include a turquoise Catawba Wine Bitters and an extraordinary E.G. This Dr. Wonser’s U.S.A. Indian Root bitters bottle, circa 187173, boasts an amber color with lots of crystal yellow glass (est. $10,000$25,000). The lots will be numbered in consecutive order. Invoices will be issued after the second auction unless American Bottle Auctions is instructed otherwise. There is a buyer’s fee of 15 percent for this auction only, up 5 percent from the previous auction. The additional 5 percent will be used for extensive national advertising and additional costs associated with an auction of this caliber. Standard auction rules will apply. American Bottle Auctions does not do callbacks but, rather, has a 10minute rule that applies to bids at the end of the auction. In essence, every bidder has a last opportunity to make a last winning bid. An online printable color catalog is available, and all of the lots are photographed and displayed in a streaming video. Every effort will be made to present the items as close as possible to the real bottle. Additional photos

or videos are available on request. Potential customers are encouraged to visit the American Bottle Auction showroom for an in-person look at all the bottles in the sale, although an appointment must be made in advance. To schedule, readers may call 800-806-7722. To learn more about American Bottle Auctions and Auction #63, readers may visit www.americanbottle.com.

Heritage Auctions’ Comics Category Breaks Single-Year Record the most important comic book ever published, its rarity – Heritage has offered just 18 copies in nearly 15 years – further bolsters its desirability. The highest overall price realized through a Comics and Comic Art auction was brought in by the original art for Frank Frazetta’s 1974 “At The Earth’s Core” paperback, which realized $1,075,500. This large (measuring more than 21 inches wide by 29 inches high) piece was used for the cover of the first “Pellucidar” novel by legendary writer Edgar Rice Burroughs and is considered one of the most important Frazetta paintings ever to reach auction. A copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) sparked a flurry of bids that drove its ultimate return up to $454,100. This CGC NM 9.4 copy marked the first appearance of Spider-Man, as well as the debut appearances of Uncle Ben and Aunt May, and is ranked first on Overstreet’s list of Top 50 Silver Age Comics. Pulling in the same final price was a 1972 Frazetta

by Heritage in 15 years, which realized $262,900. The white pages found in this issue are considered the standard, not the exception, in the Curator Pedigree collection, but that standard is a rarity among copies of Spider-Man #1. In addition to being the first issue of the most heavily collected series in the comics hobby, this issue marks the second appearance of Spider-Man and the first appearance of several supporting characters, “John Jameson,” “J. Jonah Jameson,” and “the Chameleon.” Two other pieces cracked

the $200,000 plateau during 2016, a Batman #1 (DC, 1940) CGC FN- 5.5 with off-white pages, which includes the first appearances of “The Joker” and “Catwoman” en route to a No. 6 ranking on Overstreet’s list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics, and a Steve Ditko Amazing Spider-Man #27 Splash Page 1 original art (Marvel, 1965) that depicts Spider-Man and his top nemesis, “The Green Goblin,” who makes just his fifth story appearance in the issue. painting, “The Norseman,” which brought in $454,100. One of the artist’s personal favorites among his works, Frazetta felt this image among the best in his continuous search for ways in which to picture the human figure in action. This image was reproduced several times but never allowed to be sold during his lifetime, and it was used as the dust jacket cover of the hardback release of “Flashing Swords #1.” A copy of the elusive Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG+ 4.5 soared past its preauction estimate, ultimately realizing $358,500. This issue, which is exceptionally difficult to find, first hit the newsstands about a year after Superman’s first appearance in Action Comics #1 to support the character’s rapid rise in popularity. Although an estimated 1,000,000 copies were produced in 1939, very few are known to have survived with this – or a higher – grade.
