Traver’s Auctions To Offer Major Works Of Art And High Quality Collectibles At Mid-Winter Sale Traver’s Auctions of Dallas, Luzerne County, Pa., is proud to be offering an outstanding collection of fine and decorative arts from a northeast Pennsylvania estate in their Sunday, Feb. 8, Mid-Winter auction. The items, primarily from a single estate, range from Sterling silver perfume bottles and Gorham flatware, to an important Belle Epoch oil painting. The generations-long compilation of items include a Tiffany & Co. gilded bronze clock, an L.C. Tiffany art glass vase, and Cartier vases with Sterling overlay. Bronze works of art by noted artists; marble statuary; and high quality jewelry, including vintage ladies Rolex and Girard-Perregaux watches, are also included. The sale will also include a quantity of quality steins, Mettlach and others, and even a 2011 Cadillac with less than 4,000 miles. The collection is highlighted by the Belle Epoch era

Corcos’ work has recently been exhibited in Florence, Italy, and is currently very popular with the fine art community. “Young Girl With Hound,” a similar painting to the one offered here, brought much attention when it was sold by a prominent Austrian auction house in 2013. “It’s important for collectors to realize that they do not have to travel to New York or Europe for high quality art. Treasures are where you find them, and in this case, these desirable items are to be offered locally, where they were enjoyed by our consignor’s family for many years,” said Steve Traver, auctioneer. “We are proud to be chosen to sell this gouping. Reality Television And The Antiques And Collectibles Trade Part II: The Impact the cardboard Whistle Soda advertising display that went for over $30,000, and various other signs, posters, and tin trays that sold for well more than their pre-auction price estimates. By the time all was said and done some attendees were left wondering what they had just witnessed. I spoke to more than one auctiongoer who was in utter disbelief over some of the prices being achieved across all areas of vintage advertising. Still, in the back of my mind, I already knew that these price trends were here to stay and part of the reason was due to what was being shown on television screens all across living rooms each and every week. As discussed in my last article, when “American Pickers” premiered in 2010 it became a certified smash hit and the second time lightning would strike for the History Channel after the success of “Pawn Stars.” The show gave viewers a rare inside look at what goes on behind the scenes in the antiques and collectibles trade. Vintage advertising was almost as much a star of the show as the two pickers themselves. Even today with each new passing episode I am still constantly being engaged in heated discussions with friends and coworkers who are not even active within the overall antiques and collectibles trade. Statements like “‘Did you see that cool Coke advertising sign on last night’s episode?” or “I would love to have that incredible Moxie sign!” have become quite common. On Internet forums the buzz is clearly evident with comments like “Who knew that vintage advertising signs could be such a great investment!” This has all helped solidify the legitimacy of the vintage advertising market and breathe new life into the marketplace. At a time when the whole economy was on fragile ground collectors and speculators entered the trade

making it in this business regardless of the increased competition at these kinds of auctions. By 2014, “Storage Wars” would come under heavy suspicion that most of their so called great finds may have been planted thanks in part to a lawsuit from one of its disgruntled cast members. This had virtually no effect, however, on the countless millions who continue to think that buying delinquent storage units is a valid road to wealth. As someone who dabbled in bidding on various storage units in the early 2000s, I can assure you it is not. You are more likely to find common household products and worthless furniture in most units, with very few yielding higher end antiques and collectibles. Sad to say but most people who rent storage units are not secret collectors of valuable antiques, but rather average people just looking for extra storage space. Ironically, another show on the A&E Network that was also airing during at this time would show just how attached to their possessions some people were. “Hoarders” was another popular reality television show that would air from 2009 to 2013. “Hoarders” allowed viewers a secret look into the world of hoarding and its devastating effects. While not really a reality show devoted to antiques and collectibles per se, “Hoarders” showed the dark side of human nature and what happens when materialism and obsession meet. “Hoarders,” too, was not without its fair share of critics. The show, however, ended its run in 2013 while “Storage Wars” is still going strong today. In my next article I will look at several other reality television shows and their effect on the overall antiques and collectibles trade. I will also look at the future of this genre and what is still to come. Until then it is back to watching reruns of “Toy Hunter.”

in droves with reality television being one of the catalysts for this explosion. To this day vintage advertising prices across the board continue to climb upward with “American Pickers” being cited as one of the reasons for so many new collectors entering the market. After the massive success of History Channel’s “Pawn Stars,” it was clear that there was a very large market for television shows dedicated solely to the antiques and collectibles trade. By 2010, numerous shows were continually appearing or already in the works. It was at this time that the A&E Network began to heavily promote a new reality show based on the business of buying delinquent storage unit lockers. The show was heavily promoted and premiered on Dec. 1, 2010. Up until that point the business of buying delinquent and abandoned storage units was a well-kept secret from most of the general public. With a remarkable and entertaining cast of characters “Storage Wars” found a way into the hearts and television sets of millions of viewers on a weekly basis. The first season came under heavy fire for continually showcasing finds that were deemed unrealistic by most in the business. While most of this criticism went unheard, the effect the show had on viewers everywhere permeated through the media and well into cyberspace. By 2012, the amount of Americans attending storage unit auctions increased exponentially, with some auctioneers reporting attendance at levels close to four to five times the average. Units that once sold for only a few hundred dollars were now selling well into the thousands of dollars and “how to get rich quick” gurus continued to exploit the gullible public into thinking that if they bought their book or video they too could learn all the secrets of

of interest in Kjaerholm were a set of four chairs attributed to the designer, in the style of his iconic PK9 chair. This lot hit the auction block with a low estimate of $500 and was ultimately awarded to the highest bidder at $7,500. Bidders fought to obtain an Eames rosewood 670 chair and 671 ottoman, which brought $3,200, while determined shoppers also appeared to covet an Eero Saarinen marble top dining table that sold for $3,000. Fine art also found significant success. An early-20thcentury watercolor by Leon Bakst drew bidders into a heated competition that resulted in a selling price of $10,000. Following in quick succession was a well-known aquatint entitled “Steep Street” by Wayne Thiebaud that achieved an appropriate $8,000 and an original oil by John Piper, which sold for $6,500. Collins Named Executive Director And President Of The Barnes Foundation The Board of Trustees of the Barnes Foundation recently announced that they have named Thomas “Thom” Collins as the new executive director and president of the Barnes Foundation. An educator, art historian, administrator and author, Collins, a Philadelphia native, has more than 20 years of experience at some of America’s top arts institutions. He comes to the Barnes after serving for five years as director of the Pérez Art Museum in Miami, Fla. (PAMM). “Thom is a national leader in the visual arts and is recognized for his expertise and breadth of knowledge in education and art history. His track record in museum leadership, community outreach, and development makes him the right choice to lead the

Barnes Foundation at this time,” said Joseph Neubauer, who, as chairman of the board of trustees at the Barnes Foundation, led the search committee. “We look forward to working with Thom as the Barnes enters its next phase of development.” At PAMM, Collins oversaw construction of the new Herzog & de Meurondesigned building located in downtown Miami, which opened to great acclaim in December of 2013. During his tenure, the museum achieved an overwhelming increase in membership, annual giving, attendance, and major gifts; published important exhibition and collection catalogs; added significant works of art to the collection; and began in-house production of critical new digital education tools. “It will be a privilege to lead the Barnes Foundation in its next chapter,” said Collins. “With its world-class collection, critically acclaimed new building, award-winning programs, growing membership and engaging array of courses in art and horticulture, the Barnes has become increasingly accessible to a more diverse audience than ever before. I look forward to working with the staff and

Rago Auctions’ Open House To Feature A Talk By Ceramicist Cliff Lee

Call today for your F R E E sample copy

Artist To Present “My Work, My Love, My Passion” On Thursday, Feb. 12 The Rago Arts and Auction Center will host an open house on Thursday, Feb. 12, featuring ceramicist Cliff Lee speaking at 6 p.m. Dr. Lee is an artist who presents himself with problems and revels in the discovery of their solutions, devising new (usually laborious) techniques and developing proprietary glazes. In “My Work, My Love, My Passion” Lee will provide insight into his creative process. The talk will take place during the preview week for Rago’s 20thCentury Decorative Arts and Design Auctions. Lee was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1951, where his

In 1993, President and Mrs. Clinton invited Lee to contribute to the White House Collection of American Crafts, an exhibition that toured the country. Lee’s work is now included in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery; the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Yale University Art Gallery and the Racine Art

Museum. He has received numerous awards at craft shows. His work has been exhibited around the world and featured in publications, including “Craft in America: Celebrating Two Centuries of Artists and Objects” (2007), as well as the subsequent television series. The auction house opens on Thursday, Feb. 12, at noon. A reception begins at 5 p.m. Lee will speak at 6 p.m. Interested individuals are asked to RSVP to 609-3979374, ext. 119, or email raac@ragoarts.com. All are welcome.

He attended medical school in the 1970s at the Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State College, specializing in neurosurgery. After starting work as a physician and looking to reduce stress after long workdays, Lee enrolled in a ceramics class at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. It was there that he found the two passions of his life: studio pottery and his future bride, Holly, a jewelry designer. Lee enrolled in the school’s ceramics master’s program and received his degree in 1976. From the start, Lee and his wife have sold their own work. Consignments Wanted For Our Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction - Spring 2015 Touted as one of Julia’s finest fall toy, doll & advertising auctions in recent memory, the auction had all the makings for a blockbuster right from the start. Drawn fresh from three major collections, combined with select pieces from individuals from all over the United States, it was a nonstop parade of quality, condition, rarity, and diversity. With estimates that were realistic and conservative, bidders were treated to one spectacular piece after another. Combined with Julia’s expansive marketing program, their reputation for honest and fair dealing, and some of the finest catalogs in the industry, the results were phenomenal, setting a few world auction records along the way. When the final hammer fell, Julia’s tallied over $1.4 Million, nearly a half million dollars over the total presale estimate of approximately $935,000. We are now accepting quality consignments for our spring 2015 toy, doll & advertising auction. Whether you have one item or an entire collection, please contact us today for a free consultation.

Traver’s Annual New Year’s Day Sale Continues Tradition Of Strong Results Traver’s Auctions in Dallas, Luzerne County, Pa., conducted the 18th edition of their New Year’s Day antiques and collectibles sale at noon on New Year’s Day. Bright skies and warmer weather made for a strong turnout, including new customers. There was competitive bidding from live, absentee, and telephone bidders. The variety of items and fast sales pace kept bidders interested and involved for the duration of the four-hour sale. In the fine arts category, the sales were led by a limited edition Erte bronze titled “Prisoner of Love,” which

realized $2,500, with another large bronze figure realizing $800. A framed World War I (WWI) poster of “Miss Liberty Charging into Battle” sold for $1,550, while other framed WW1 and WWII posters brought $300 to $500 each. The collectibles category showed spirited bidding, with several phone bidders showing high interest in an Arcade Toys cast iron streamline train with box, which eventually found a new home in Kansas City, Mo., selling for $1,000. A Hamilton Ship’s chronometer realized $800.

Primitives were highlighted this year, with many of the key items having been consigned from a life-long collector. A Philadelphia-marked large coffee grinder sold for $700, a blue paint corner cupboard with 16 pane windows sold for $1,950, a complete Hoosier-style cabinet sold for $900, and a 1843 blue-andwhite coverlet brought $650. The category was led by a folk art carved eagle Bible stand, which sold for $2,100. An unusual child’s “goat sleigh” brought $600. Jewelry was led by a vintage platinum and 33 diamond

In a re-cap of an interesting story from March of 2014, a rare five-gallon figural jug marked “J.L.” was purchased by a Birmingham, Ala., museum for $100,000. The large black jug in the form of a man’s bust dressed in formal attire and with hoop earrings was reportedly previously purchased by a man in a shop roughly 40 years ago for $12. The buyer eventually gave the piece to his granddaughter. The circa1870s work was by post Civil-War Alabama folk artist John Lehman. Photo courtesy of News.yahoo.com and Kovels.com.
