An early 19th-century whaling log fetched $3,600 at National Book Auctions’ Jan. 21 sale. The bound manuscript, featuring 48 leaves and 16 ink drawings, pertains to the whaling ship “Victory” of New Bedford, captained by Henry Adams. The ship left New Bedford in July 1823 for the whaling grounds off the coast of the southern tip of South America. The log begins in August of that year, and the ship reached the whaling grounds in October. The unnamed officer who kept the log was evidently put back to sea, as the log recommences in July 1824 on board the ship “New Galen” from Boston, heading toward Mexico. The sale, held at the auction house’s Freeville, N.Y., saleroom and through Invaluable, also featured material dating back to 1549. It was also the second session of a private collection of collectible modern horror, mystery, and science fiction books. Titles of note included “Astro-Theology” by William Derham; “A Voyage Round The World” by George Anson; “The Box from Japan” by Harry Stephen Keeler; and “Vampire” by Hanns Heinz Ewers. National Book Auctions is a specialist auction house focusing almost exclusively on rare and collectible books and ephemera. Its sister company, Worth Auctions, handles a broad variety of personal property including fine art, furnishings, jewelry, coins, and more. Evans & Associates for a day with two passionate teachers, scholars, and decorative arts experts, essential hands-on experience, and practical takeaways. By the end of the workshop each attendee should possess the following: - The knowledge to identify a broad range of glass and ceramics. - The skills for appropriate handling, examination, and condition assessment of the material valuable points as well as resources for recognizing fakes and reproductions. - A general understanding of rarity and value. The workshop is geared toward continuing education credits for appraisers, and also open to

The PAA is grateful for members Bob Dann, Dominic DeSpirito, Michael Dilliard, Matt Hostetter, Tim Keller, Ray Knecht, Jason Reed, and Jamie Shearer for sharing valuable business building information. The PAA traditionally hosts the PA Auctioneer Competition at the Farm Show Complex during the PA Farm Show. Many of the best auctioneers in the state were on-hand at the event. rookie champion was Joel Gavaletz of Pottsville. The PAA is honored to have so many members who have dedicated their careers to the industry and who have strived to make it the best it can be for everyone. Several awards were given to honor those members. The recipient of the prestigious award of Auctioneer of the Year was awarded to Beth C. Hillmar of Mercer. The nominations for this award are chosen by auctioneers in his/her area, and the winner is selected by his/her statewide peers. Hillmar has shown excellent leadership, high ethical standards, willingness to share with others, participation in community affairs, and outstanding contributions to the PAA and the profession in 2016. She was unable to attend due to illness, but her daughter was in attendance to accept her award. Two auctioneers were inducted into the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame. The PAA also honored representative and auctioneer Mark Keller for his dedication and efforts in the eventual passing of the new auction law, Act 88. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Lights Out

Regular readers know the saga of the 1970s ranch house that we purchased. I have long been a fan of using antique lighting to enhance a room. Whether an old or new house, antique lighting is how you can change

up of fragments of broken colored glass imbedded in milk glass. Suffice to say, they are an aesthetic disaster for sure and really negatively alter the rooms they are in. This past weekend, we were back in Pennsylvania looking at replacement fixtures. The short end of the short is that we found replacements in an antique shop. The faux lily pad monster was replaced with an early 20th-century slag fixture that fits nicely with the Mission interior. The

bejeweled blister lamp is now in the trash and replaced by a lovely 1920s Chinese fixture. In our look for lamps, I came to realize that the real unicorn of the antiques world is to find high quality original light fixtures that can be used in an appropriate interior. I have several boxes of light fixtures that I purchased in the hopes of using them for various projects. Those fixtures sit because either they cannot be economically or practically rewired today or they will not fit in the house.

Finding quality fixtures and preparing them for installation in a modern house takes time and requires knowledge of both the fixtures and modern wiring. As we were looking, it amazed me the variety of conditions and pricing for fixtures that I would see. Even the cheapest of brass fixtures in terms of quality seemed to warrant a high price, and yet high quality bronze Victorian fixtures were very inexpensive even if rewired. I account for this as a result of both changing tastes

and fears by homeowners about wiring fixtures up. Easier to upgrade a 1960s brass fixture than it is to try and deal with something older. As my wife and I were driving back, we got to talking that someone looking to start a really great antiques business could build it around antique and vintage light fixtures. Figuring out how to restore old fixtures and connect them to new audiences sounds like a pretty cool business.

the appearance of a room. So the house we have is a rancher that sadly was updated by someone who must have had a bad fascination with modern big box home repair stores. The light fixtures that were original to the house were pulled and replaced with some of the cheapest and ugliest lighting that one can imagine. The hall light was a blister fixture with hanging faux glass jewels. The dining room was a faux effort at a lily pad lamp. And the hall lights, which still have to be resolved, are made

February is the month of l’amour. Since the winter has taken hold, the cold weather gives everyone an opportunity to snuggle up with the ones they love. What a better way to pass the short days and long nights than to rekindle the fire of romance? Well, baby, it’s cold outside, so the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., invites shoppers to come in from the cold and find accoutrements that will bring warmth and joy to the hearts of those they love. The store has many gifts for Valentine’s Day, such as vintage ephemera, decorative floral plates and collectibles, fan vases, whimsical cherubs and love birds, jewelry boxes (not to mention the glittering gems to display in them), heartshaped pin cushions, trinket boxes and candy dishes, stemware and other tabletop items in romantic hues, gloves, and beaded bags, and that’s just the start of all it has to offer. Whether shopping for a sweetheart, mother, daughter, or beloved friend, there are many unique antique and collectible gifts on special. They will surely see the light of love in their eyes when they open a Grist Mill treasure found just for them. The Grist Mill’s friendly dealers are happy to help find

a special something for that special someone, no matter the budget or need. The store offers a 20 percent discount on items priced at $6 or more every day and 25 percent off a special category each week. Book To Be Published On The 20th- And 21st-Century Self-Taught Artists From The Audrey B. Heckler Collection The artworks created by so-called outsider, art brut, and self-taught artists have fascinated collectors for decades. A new book, “The Hidden Art,” captures the evolution and growth of this art field, narrated through the outstanding collection that Audrey B. Heckler has assembled over the last 24 years. Organized into five sections - Masters, Art Brut and Self-Taught Artists in Europe, Southern American Self-Taught Favorites, American Classics, and 21stCentury Self-Taught Art Worldwide - this publication celebrates the individual contributions and legacy of self-taught artists with thoughtful essays by 32 renowned specialists of selftaught art, who represent the international scope and diversity underlying this collection. Supported by the American Folk Art Museum since its founding in 1961, self-taught art has taken its rightful place in the pantheon of art history. “The Hidden Art” includes the works of 48 exceptional artists, many whose names are now familiar - Henry Darger, Thornton Dial, Madge Gill, Morris Hirshfield, Martín Ramírez, Bill Traylor, and Adolf Wölfli - and also less familiar artists. Lot 311, a red, white, and blue Wyeth sign featuring a boy sitting in a pile of tires, is estimated at $15,000-$30,000. This rarity, with great wheel-appeal, has excellent color and gloss and is marked “Burdick.” Lot 84, a diecut Good Luck Service sign with a horseshoe logo, gets the green light for its $5,000-$7,500

Another strong representative in this group is lot 65, a Havoline “Drain and Refill with the Power Oil” sign, estimated at $2,000-$4,000. It is marked “Property of Indian Refining Company, #4-1-2F” and has excellent gloss and color. And two examples from Mobil should get collectors’ engines revving. The first, lot 53, is a 1961 right facing Pegasus cookie cutter sign, which takes flight at $4,000-$7,000.

The second, lot #58, is a Mobiloil sign featuring the company’s early 20th century gargoyle logo. This mythical masterpiece is marked “G.C. Advert St. Louis” and is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. Things are twice as nice with this auction’s array of double sided porcelain signs. Two selections featuring American Indian themes are headliners. Lot 51, a Musgo Gasoline Michigan’s Mile Maker sign illustrated with the company’s chief logo, is estimated at $100,000-$150,000. It has a fascinating backstory. “When Musgo went out of business, a plumber purchased the

Historic Glass U.S. Penny Sold For $70,500 Ultra-Rare Glass Coin Was World War II Experiment The only known surviving intact experimental all-glass penny, manufactured in 1942 as a possible alternative to copper that was urgently needed during World War II, sold for $70,500 in a public auction conducted in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and online by Dallas, Texas, based Heritage Auctions on Jan. 6. A war between a phone bidder and a floor bidder pushed the cent’s selling price to more than double its $30,000 expected value. The rare penny finally was won by an American collector bidding on the phone. “This one-of-a-kind cent is a part of U.S. history,” said Mark Borckardt, senior numismatist at Heritage Auctions. “Collectors love to own unusual specimens, and although glass failed as a substitute for U.S. coinage, this piece represents a unique artifact of the ingenuity and determination of U.S. Mint officials and private industry.” Made of tempered yellow-amber transparent glass by the Blue Ridge Glass Company of Kingsport, Tenn., the example offered in the auction is the only surviving example of two known to exist. The other example is broken in half.

After considering various alternatives, such as glass, plastic and even rubber, the U.S. Mint eventually struck cents made of zinc-coated steel in 1943. By the time the glass cent tests were completed in December 1942, it was too late for the U.S. Mint to consider glass coins as a viable replacement for the penny. and a collection of 67 photographs documenting the moon landing as seen on national television (est. $5,000 to $7,500 and $4,000 to $6,000, respectively). There is a rich selection of works by 20th-century American photographers, including Alfred Stieglitz’s intimate portrait of his protégée Dorothy Norman, which was previously in Norman’s personal collection. This image, which was not reproduced in Sarah Greenough’s “Alfred Stieglitz, The Key Set,” may be unique. It is estimated at $20,000 to $30,000. Ansel Adams is well represented in the sale with more than a dozen works, including the breathtaking “Clearing Winter Storm,” taken in 1944 and printed in the 1970s, expected to sell between $25,000 and $35,000. His 1979 photobook “Yosemite and the Range of Light,” one of 250 signed copies of the deluxe edition, is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. Important works by Robert Frank include “Hearse, London, 1951” silver print, printed 1973, and “Trolley – New Orleans,” silver print (est. $20,000 to $25,000 and $10,000 to $15,000, respectively). Further highlights include images by Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Roy DeCarava, Lewis W. Hine and Dorothea Lange. A set of 32 silver prints by Leni Riefenstahl relating to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, with action shots and posed portraits of athletes including Jesse Owens, carries an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.
