Members of Tea Leaf Club International (TLCI) are anxiously awaiting the launch of a new online informational site which will serve as a paperless handbook of all things Tea Leaf. Development of the site has been in process for months, producing a comprehensive guide to help collectors identify and recognize the many body styles, motifs, potters, and characteristics of the popular decorated ironstone. Target date for the launch of this exciting new source of information is Tuesday, March 1. When available, visitors will be able to view many photos of representative pieces and learn more about the history and development of Tea Leaf through the years. Cross-referencing will allow better access for comparisons. For example, calling up information on sugar bowls will bring up photos of many pieces in various body styles and by different potters. This will help in initial identification of a particular

piece. Then, using the link from a photo, one can bring up more information on that style and potter. The new site and its wealth of information will be available free of charge to non-members, too. TLCI members know that there are many people who may have Tea Leaf in their possession but have never known much about its age and history. The club hopes that visiting this site will stimulate interest, and encourage others to join in the study and appreciation for Tea Leaf.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT
This Week: Fine Dining Peter Swift Seibert My eldest daughter was setting the table the other day for dinner. I watched her struggling with the place settings and realized that I had never taken the time to explain how a table should be set. Where does the salad fork
go? How do you handle butter at the table? These were all questions that needed some answers for her as she struggled with the complexities of multiple pieces. I know that some of you are going to tell me that such things have gone the way of the dinosaurs. I had a colleague who served Christmas dinner on paper plates so she would not have to clean up afterwards. She would give me a hard time about setting a beautiful table, as it was just so “old school.
Living in the South, I am impressed that there are still a number of folks who believe in setting a lovely table. Not the silly shabby chic of the decorator magazines or the over-the-top look where you spend money to have a beautiful table and everything is discarded at the end. Rather, I am talking about the old school style of decorating with china, glass and all the appointments. This year, we decided to pull everything out of storage and set the table for
Christmas dinner as it had been done when I was a boy. Jane and I spent the afternoon getting everything ready for the dinner. We talked about arranging the table and how people needed to see each other. In the end, although it was just the family holiday dinner, it was a lot of fun. It got me to thinking that despite the casual world we live in - and I am still not sure what we are doing with all the time we are saving with labor saving devices - there is a place for setting a beautiful
table. And it need not be outrageously expensive. I am shocked at the high prices that retailers charge for onetime use table decorations. It is far more cost effective and fun to purchase antique items and decorate the table accordingly. Several years ago, I started to buy my wife a set of china based upon a pattern that she liked. The pattern is interesting because we had found fragments of it at our home when we were taking down a building. As a result, this started a collection that has grown over time. The china has been fun to acquire at various
shops and co-ops over the years and we even find examples on eBay. We now have enough to entertain a pretty good size party and will probably keep acquiring examples. So why do I advocate this kind of old school dining? Well as a historian, I believe that knowing our past is about understanding who we are today. Starting some traditions with the girls about fine dining is the sort of thing that connects them to a past while giving them traditions for the future.
Happy Galentine’s Day!

No, that’s not a typo. Galentine’s Day is all the rage, and women young and old are beginning to mark Feb. 13 the day BEFORE Valentine’s Day - to remember all the amazing women in their lives. While not a long established tradition, it has its roots in pop culture. The phrase and event were coined back in 2010 by the writers of the popular sitcom “Parks & Recreation. It obviously filled a gap since many women have now taken to celebrating the holiday each year. The Dutch believed music to be a divine gift or spiritual medicine, to which the mottos inscribed on many of the period’s instruments attest. Yet melodymaking was simultaneously experienced as belonging to the sensuous realm of pleasure. “These eight works of art on loan from the Leiden collection are precious, delicate, intimate, fun, and amazing paintings. Centered on one masterpiece by Vermeer, ‘Vermeer Suite’ also features his contemporaries playing their various parts in different tunes,” said Olivier Meslay, associate director of curatorial affairs, senior curator of European and American Art, and the Barbara Thomas Lemmon curator of European Art at the Dallas Museum of Art. “Dutch paintings from the 17th century are among the most fascinating creations of the Western world, and this focused exhibition presents this extraordinary time period beautifully,” said Meslay. Musical harmony was a particularly popular metaphor Gerard ter Borch’s “A Musical Company” is an oil-on-panel, circa 1642-44, in 17th-century Dutch imagery, standing in for romantic, from the Leiden collection.
martial, or familial unity. Specific musical instruments were also invested with symbolism, such as the lute, which carried sexual associations because its shape was thought to imitate the female form. In addition to the traditional symbolism of Dutch genre scenes, music as subject matter became a testament to the artist’s ability. The skill it took to represent an ephemeral and auditory performance in visual terms was highly prized. Translating one type of sensory experience into another was considered a virtuosic talent. An interactive educational area with a sound bar featuring the instruments represented in the suite of paintings will be available to visitors. Along with extended materials on music and its importance in 17th-century Dutch life, music composed during this time period will be playing continuously in the exhibition foyer. DMA Friends will be able to earn the “Vermeer Suite: Music in 17thCentury Dutch Painting” special exhibition badge. For more information on the exhibit and special programs, visit www.DMA.org. These paintings also portray musicians performing period instruments such as the lute, violin, and violincello and demonstrate key aspects of 17th-century musical culture. “Vermeer Suite: Music in 17th-Century Dutch Painting,” presents a rare opportunity to view this Vermeer painting, is free of charge, and open through Sunday, Aug. 21. It is the first exhibition of work from the Leiden collection focused exclusively on Dutch art. Of the 36 known surviving paintings by Vermeer, 12 depict musical themes or include a musical instrument. The exhibition centers on Vermeer’s painting “Young Woman Seated at a Virginal,” which is typical of the acclaimed artist’s style in its depiction of a solitary woman seated at the keyboard instrument with light illuminating the scene from a window not seen on the canvas. The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) presents “Vermeer Suite: Music in 17th-Century Dutch Painting,” an exhibition organized by the DMA showcasing paintings from the prestigious Leiden collection of New York, including a work by Johannes Vermeer. The great 17th-century Dutch painter created fewer than 40 paintings during his lifetime, and “Young Woman Seated at a Virginal” from 1670-72 is believed to be one of Vermeer’s last. This masterpiece is the inspiration for the exhibition “Vermeer Suite: Music in 17th-Century Dutch Painting,” which includes seven additional loans from the Leiden collection of works by Vermeer’s contemporaries:

A museum’s-worth of personal paintings, furniture, and special objects belonging to adventurist Richard “Dick” Bass, the famous Texas oil baron and first man to climb the “Seven Summits,” the tallest mountains on each continent, will highlight Heritage Auctions’ Fine and Decorative Arts, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20 and 21 in Dallas, Texas. Bass’ son, Jim Bass, told Heritage’s The Intelligent Collector magazine that his father’s art collection was built through auction acquisitions for his home and his ski resort. Bass died in Dallas, Texas, in July of 2015. The estate’s diverse

Fine Arts and is represented in the sale with a watercolor titled “Sand Dunes.” Hazel Doner (1897-1981) was the wife of Paul Doner and together they owned an art gallery on Queen Street in Lancaster, Pa., from 1933-81. She won numerous first place prizes for her works and was a trustee of the Lancaster County Art Association until her death. In the sale is a oilon-canvas depicting a colorful autumnal landscape. Also represented in this month’s long sale are renditions by other American artists (many who studied and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts), several primitive folk art works, and a number of antique European paintings. An Italian oil-on-canvas coastal landscape by Emilio Donnini (1809-86) is a showstopper. This painting captures the evocative evening setting sun as it casts light on the clouds, the water, the boats, and the fishermen. Donnini, with the skillful use of light and pure hues, transfers the romantic realism of Italian life onto the canvas. Another appealing oil painting is an oilon-wood panel painting signed by the German artist Ernst Holzweissig. This alluring painting depicts three different species of butterflies with a faux painted wood grain background. In contrast to the small painting of butterflies is a large German oil-on-canvas painting of a tabletop still life by Edward HuberAndorf (1877-1965). The painting depicts a tray with a lobster, oysters, grapes and an orange, with a copper bowl of fruit and a block of cheese, all on a red cloth on a wood table in a Continental style. Among the paintings on sale are regional works by such artists as Ben Austrian and Christopher Shearer and also work by international artists including work from Salvador Dali and Marc Chagall. Selected for this sale are portraits, still lifes, landscapes, marine art and genre paintings. Among the Lancaster and Berks county regional art represented is an oil-on-canvas painting signed C.H. Shearer 1908. This painting depicts an autumn landscape in Berks County with a pink and yellow sky above a covered bridge and a rabbit in the road. Christopher Shearer (1849-1926) was a well known artist from Reading, Pa., who studied in Paris and Munich and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Shearer was a strong promoter of the arts in Berks County in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and supported the movement through an association with the Oscar Woerner Art Gallery. Shearer also was instrumental in the development of the Reading Public Museum and Art Gallery, convincing the founder, Dr. Levi Mengel, to incorporate a painting gallery within the institution in 1913. Works by Lancaster County artists include watercolors by Myrtle Tremblay, an original watercolor by Thomas Hermansader, and an oil painting by Hazel Doner. Myrtle Tremblay (1908-2011) was known for her watercolors of rural farmland and historical landmarks of Lancaster County. Included in “Art Lovers Month” are two watercolors, one depicting a mill in Hinkletown and the other a large stone house. Tremblay studied at the School of Art institute of Chicago, Ill., and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. “Ben-Hur”: The Might And Majesty Of Movie Memorabilia By William J. Felchner
paper artifacts as posters, lobby cards and other paraphernalia. “Ben-Hur” owes its origins to author Lew Wallace, a Union general during the Civil War and later governor of the New Mexico Territory, who in 1880 authored a sweeping historical novel titled “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.” Wallace’s novel was later brought to the stage in 1899 with William Farnum in the title role as Judah BenHur. In 1907, the Kalem Company produced the first movie version of “Ben Hur,” a silent 15-minute short made for $500. That was followed in 1925 by the famous $4 million silent blockbuster “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ” starring Ramon Novarro, Francis X. Bushman and May McAvoy. MGM had always A “Ben-Hur” British front-of-house still set sold wanted to remake for $418.25.
When it comes to big screen movie spectaculars few pictures can top the might and majesty of 1959’s “Ben-Hur.” One of Hollywood’s all-time cinematic epics, the 1959 version is a big favorite with movie memorabilia collectors, with values reflecting the intense demand for such promotional
A “Ben-Hur” French grande poster sold for $776.75. “Ben-Hur” for the sound cinema, but with the right director at the helm. The project finally came to fruition in 1959 with director William Wyler delivering one of Hollywood’s greatest historical masterpieces. MGM had considered several actors for the lead role of Judah Ben-Hur, including Burt Lancaster and Rock Hudson. William Wyler, however, who
had free reign to cast the picture, eventually settled on Charlton Heston. Rounding out the principal roles were Stephen Boyd as Messala, Jack Hawkins as Quintus Arrius, Haya Harareet as Esther, Hugh Griffith as Sheik Ilderim, Martha Scott as Miriam, Cathy O’Donnell as Tirzah, Sam Jaffe as Simonides, Finlay Currie as Balthasar and Frank Thring as Pontius Pilate. Just like the original 1925 silent film, 1959’s “Ben-Hur” was shot on location in Italy. MGM had rented Cinecitta Studios in Rome, utilizing its sound stages, dressing rooms, cutting rooms and offices to film the $15.9 million spectacular. A number of exterior sets were constructed, including the gate to Jerusalem, the House of Hur, Pilate’s palace, the villa of Quintus Arrius and the Great Circus of Antioch. The latter, of course, featured the famous chariot race sequence, with legendary
stuntman Yakima Canutt molding both Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd into competent chariot drivers before the final cut. The thrilling chariot race, now the stuff of movie history, was a huge undertaking involving 40,000 tons of sand imported from Mediterranean beaches and
7,000 locals hired to strategically fill the stadium. The spectators were moved about with military precision in order to create the effect of a packed arena. It was Joe Canutt, Yakima’s son, who performed the most dangerous stunts in the racing sequence. In one scene, where Ben-Hur’s chariot jumps a piece of wreckage, Joe Canutt was nearly crushed to death, escaping serious injury or death after flinging himself free of the careening vehicle. Set in A.D. 26, the film tells the story of Judah BenHur, a wealthy Jewish prince who runs afoul of his childhood friend, Massala, the new commander of the Roman garrison. Condemned as a galley slave, Ben-Hur later earns his freedom following heroic actions at sea and becomes the adopted son of Roman Consul Quintus Arrias, whom he had saved during a battle with Macedonian pirates. Ben-Hur is steeped in A “Ben-Hur” one-sheet poster sold for Continued on page 22 $310.70.

Sheik Ilderim learns of Ben-Hur’s prowess as a charioteer, eventually persuading him to drive his prized team of white Arabian horses in the big race. During the latter, Ben-Hur proves triumphant, defeating his hated rival Massala, who is fatally injured during the race. But before he dies, Massala tells Ben-Hur where he can find his displaced family. Special Valentine’s Day Display And Sale To Be Held Historic Burlington Antique And Art Emporium Will Hold Numerous Specials The month of February is known for various things, including Groundhog Day, Ash Wednesday, Presidents Day, and the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day. Approximately one billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas. Valentine greetings can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. His greeting is part of the manuscript collection of the British library in London, England. During the middle of the 18th century it was common for friends and lovers to exchange small tokens of
fine/very fine condition brought $155.35 at auction. No “Ben-Hur” collection would be complete without the eight-card lobby set, so named because these colorful (11-by-14-inch) cards were displayed in theater lobbies. One set in CGC graded overall very fine condition sold for $179.25 at auction. The set contains the title card along with other cards featuring an array of scenes, such as Judah Ben-Hur toiling in the bowels of a slave ship galley, Jesus Christ preaching to the multitudes and, of course, the magnificent chariot race. And speaking of lobby cards, one rare item is the fantastic 3-D holographic “Ben-Hur” lobby card, which was used in special theater engagements. It depicts the famous chariot race in all of its 3-D glory, with one framed example in top condition selling at auction for $117.50. Miscellaneous “Ben-Hur”
items abound in the field. A British front-of-house photo set of 16 (8-by-10-inch) photos is always a crowd pleaser. One of these sets in very fine/near mint condition realized $418.25 at auction. Another popular item is the rare “Ben-Hur” lenticular counter display, which measures (10-by-13-inches). This promotional item actually comes from the 1969 theater re-release. One example in very fine condition brought $388.38 at auction. Foreign movie posters are always worth a prominent mention. One of the finest posters of this ilk is the “BenHur” French grande poster (47-by-62-inches), which features the thrilling chariot race. One example in folded fine condition sold at auction for $776.75. “Ben-Hur” was first seen in France in May 1960 at the Cannes Film Festival. Another great foreign movie poster is the “Ben-Hur” British quad (30-by-40inches). One example in very fine condition sold for $89.63 at auction. “BenHur” premiered in the United Kingdom on Dec. 16, 1959. One interesting paper artifact to keep an eye out for is the Nov. 16, 1959, issue of “Life” magazine. Inside is an article by Robert Coughlan titled “The General’s Mighty Chariots,” which details the history of Ben-Hur from book to play to silent films to sound film.
