Impressive Range Of Material Offered At York Show Event Featured Good Attendance And Strong Sales By Karl Pass

elvin Arion’s Original 164th Semi-Annual York Antiques Show and Sale escaped the worst of the winter weather and successfully ran Jan. 30, 31, and Feb. 1. The first show of 2015 for many dealers, Arion’s show was packed with an array of colorful Americana, which pictures can only begin to capture. Held two times a year, this show has solidified itself as where to go to for the best selection in antiques in the Mid-Atlantic region. The range of offerings is vast, including quality ceramics such as china and redware, glassware, textiles, woodenware, baskets, prints, silver, and country and formal furniture, just to name a few things. Several very good antique jewelry dealers exhibit at Arion’s show, too. “(Arion) brought in a really good crowd all three days,” said dealer Jim Emele. Arion elaborated, “We had a really good show with great attendance on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the attendance was a bit off, but the ones that came in on Sunday did a good amount of buying, so I was pleased. I couldn’t ask for more.” Dealer Art Booth reported that a retired museum curator turned collector from Houston, Texas, flew to the show and purchased a piece of New Jersey redware after a follow-up call. This indicates that the

event continues to be a show where exhibitors can make contacts and nurture their customer base. Several dealers noted sectors of the business seem to have reached an uptick, while many areas continue to experience a downturn. The largest of the two shows conducted on the York Fairgrounds, Arion’s show had 96 dealers. Several fill-ins were needed, however, due to health issues and other reasons. Greg Kramer took over Raccoon Creek’s former booth as well as his typical spot right inside the main door. Steve Still took Kelly Kinzle’s large booth because Kinzle was exhibiting at the Winter Antiques Show in Manhattan. Kinzle will be back for the fall show, and Still will take over the spot where Raccoon Creek once was, as the latter will not be returning. Merrimacport, Mass., dealer Colette Donovan was in the booth long occupied by Harry Hartman and Oliver Overlander. The show was dedicated to long-time exhibiting dealer Harry B. for 52 years,” said Arion. The end of January is always a risky time to hold a show due to unpredictable weather. Many dealers, especially from New England, made the trip a day or two early because of the major storm that hit the Northeast,

adding to their expenses. Many stayed a day longer as well. York itself escaped the winter weather. “I had a great show,” stated Michael Whittemore. “What I brought worked, and I think that is important. I want to appeal to an eclectic range of buyers.” Among the Florida dealer’s sales were four weathervanes, including a horse and rider; a corner cupboard; a fish market sign; a carousel horse; a garden bench; a pair of urns; and smalls. An outstanding booth was put together by Bailey Island, Maine, dealers Jim and Nancy Glazer, who have not exhibited in York for several years. “It was a pleasure to work with them. I know they sold a very good Windsor chair and an excellent grandfather clock,” said Arion. York used to host six antique shows a year. Now, there are only four. While

In this article I will continue the discussion on the overall effect that reality television has had on the antiques and collectibles market. In my last article, titled “Reality Television and the Antiques and Collectibles Trade Part II: The Impact,” I discussed two shows in particular and the immediate effect these shows had on the markets they represent. This article will look at two more shows and their effect on the trade and will be followed up with a fourth and final article concluding this series. We begin with a look at “Toy Hunter” and how it changed the way we view vintage toys. When “Toy Hunter” premiered on the Travel Channel in August of 2012 it caught most enthusiasts off guard. Despite heavy promotional advertising that premiered weeks before the first episode, most toy enthusiasts were not expecting a reality-based television show devoted to such a niche, yet popular collectible. Even though a lot of Internet toy collecting forums had already leaked details that the show was in the works, few thought it would actually see the light of day. In previous articles I have

2015. At that time the producers of “Toy Hunter” were already showing various vintage Star Wars toys and their increasingly high secondary market values. The Star Wars line was one of the first toy lines to experience massive price increases, both because of the announcement from Disney and the consistent showing of secondary market values on shows like “Toy Hunter.” As a result, highly coveted action figures and related vintage toys steadily started to increase in value. The effect was immediate on Internet auction sites like eBay where obscure pieces like the limited vinyl cape Jawa action figure started to attract bidders outside of the overall toy collecting community for its so called “investment” potential. As “Toy Hunter” progressed other popular and obscure toy lines were shown in great detail, along with some of the original vintage television commercials that accompanied these toy lines. This served to only whet the appetites for collectors and

commented heavily on “Toy Hunter” but a quick summary of the show is still warranted. “Toy Hunter” followed veteran toy dealer Jordan Hembrough as he traveled the globe in search of rare and valuable toys from the past several decades. Most of his finds favored modern-era toys produced in the 1970s and ’80s with a strong emphasis on Star Wars and subsequent ’80s toy lines produced by Hasbro and Mattel. There was little focus on antique toys as most of Jordan’s clients were Gen X’ers looking to recapture their youth. The show premiered to rave reviews, but continued to garner ongoing criticism for its thin plot lines and somewhat unrealistic requests that placed Jordan in interesting predicaments. The show was unfortunately canceled after the third season with various reasons being cited, but reruns still continue to enjoy air time both in the United States and in some international markets where it continues to be extremely popular. Before “Toy Hunter” premiered few individuals outside the antiques and collectibles market considered vintage toys to be a valid alternate investment. Ironically, it was also in 2012 that George Lucas would announce the sale of the coveted Star Wars franchise to the Disney Corporation. This put Star Wars back into the spotlight as Disney announced the immediate work on the next Star Wars film scheduled to be released on Friday, Dec. 18,

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Travel Channel was up. This gave a lot of fans hope that the show would return in some other form. As of this time, nothing new has yet to be formally announced, but Jordan has hinted that he does have other projects in the works. Ironically, even without the excitement of another season, “Toy Hunter can easily be watched online or through various other means. The show has continued to bring new fans into the hobby and this trend does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Prices of vintage Star Wars toys and related vintage toy lines have never been higher and most experts agree that they have yet to fully peak. Aside from “Toy Hunter, no commentary on the effect of reality television would ever be complete without mentioning “Pawn Stars. The show premiered in 2010 on the History channel and quickly reignited the reality television genre devoted to the overall

antiques and collectibles market. “Pawn Stars is credited not only with changing how individuals think about the average pawn shop, but also about capitalism in general. Unlike “American Pickers, the show didn’t face much criticism from viewers claiming that the show was taking advantage of consumers. This was most likely due to the inclusion of the owner’s ability to “phone in an expert to get a second opinion on the perceived value of the item in question. Ironically, this alone has changed the way individuals collectively think about pawn shops in general, with several isolated reports of unhappy patrons upset that their local pawn shop doesn’t have an appraiser in historic artifacts on speed dial. While most consumers think of a pawn shop as a dark and gloomy place somewhere in the seedy part of town that sells jewelry, used electronics, and precious metals, “Pawn

Morphin’ Power Rangers. Even at the bottom end of the market reasonably priced loose and used vintage toys sold quickly at most flea markets and antique malls. Most of these finds were quickly resold on eBay to an even larger roster of growing collectors. Internet forums discussed the speculative craze in depth and financial news stations like CNBC did multiple reports on the possible investment element of vintage toys. Suddenly collecting toys was cool again. Media attention increased across the board with reports of various vintage toys being sold for five figures and higher. The market was no longer kept in the shadows and now noncollectors were watching the show along with enthusiasts. Unfortunately, by the end of 2014 it was announced that “Toy Hunter would not be returning. One of the reasons cited was that Jordan Hembrough’s contract with the

Stars succeeded in attempting to change these misconceptions by showing lots of unique and historically important artifacts brought in by average patrons just looking to sell. “Pawn Stars helped reignite the secondary market for antiques and collectibles by exposing the average viewer to doses of the trade in short intervals. This excited noncollectors almost as much as most regular enthusiasts. Unfortunately, reality television’s effect on the antiques and collectibles trade has not come without some controversy. In my next and final article on this topic I will discuss the issues and concerns this has had on longtime collectors and enthusiasts within the trade and will look at where the overall genre is headed. Until then, I wish you all well!

Noel Barrett’s $1.1 Million Auction Appealed To A Variety Of Collectors collector, so the train went on quite a journey before returning to its homeland,” said Barrett. The veteran toy appraiser went on to explain that the reason the train is so valuable is because relatively few were made in the first place. “Marklin produced the toy more than 60 years after the real Stephenson’s Rocket was retired. It was not a good seller because it was not a train that kids could relate to. Because so few of the trains were marketed, it was rare to begin with and even fewer survived over the century to follow,” said Barrett. Known as Germany’s premier golden-era toy maker, Marklin also produced the Gauge 1 hospital car with seven patients and eight beds (est. $7,000$8,000) and a circa 1923-28 Locomobile steam plant with dynamo (est. $10,000$12,000). Each of the two lots achieved $14,520. Barrett said he was not expecting the $21,780 (four times the high estimate) price paid for a 19th-century Clinton fire pumper model consigned by descendants of its designer, Edgar Lasak. Accompanied by two framed fire company membership certificates issued to Lasak, one of them dated 1847, the finely detailed, 18-inch-long model had survived in “brilliant condition,” according to its catalog description. A 19th-century salesman’s sample of a Stebbins & Walker seeder (farm machine) cultivated an $11,200 selling price against an estimate of $3,500$4,500. It was one of several rarities in the sale that had come to Barrett subsequent to an “Antiques Roadshow” appraisal. “There were many eyeopening prices paid in this

If variety is the spice of life, auction house owner Noel Barrett was the undisputed king of condiments over the weekend of Dec. 5 and 6. His 926-lot Antique Auction colorfully ran the gamut from carousel figures and German Christmas ornaments to tattoo memorabilia and jewelry store motion displays. “And there were buyers for every single niche category,” said Barrett, known to collectors from coast to coast for his avuncular demeanor and expert appraisals on PBS Television’s “Antiques Roadshow.” The auction was anchored by two important collections: the Libby Goodman dollhouse and miniatures collection and a wonderful array of antique toys and trains amassed by renowned magician the late John Daniel and his wife, Kathy. In addition, the lineup featured a wealth of other toys, trains, signs and curiosities from approximately 40 other American and European consignors. “This was one of our most eclectic sales ever. It contained a number of unusual single-owner pieces, family heirlooms that had been passed down through several generations,” said Barrett. Grossing $1,120,000 (inclusive of 21 percent buyer’s premium), the sale breezed past its presale high estimate of $925,000. Leading the prices realized was a rare Marklin toy train replicating the real-life Stephenson’s Rocket that rode the rails at record speeds from 1829 to 1840. Consisting of a locomotive with tender and two cars, the 25-inch-long train was offered with a $25,000$35,000 estimate and ultimately sold for $121,000. “It came to us from a German consignor and was purchased by a German

Morphy Auctions’ Back-To-Back Sales Of Antique Advertising, Fine And Decorative Art Tally Nearly $2.2 Million The Earliest-Known Coca-Cola Calendar Of Its Type Sold For $150,000 C. Candler & Co., a retail and wholesale drug business on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Ga., that served Coca-Cola at its soda fountain. In 1891, Candler paid $2,300 to become sole owner of Coca-Cola, and a year later, he dissolved his pharmaceutical business and formed the Coca-Cola Bottling Company along with four other partners. The early and iconic calendar, one of only two known examples of 1891 Coke calendars, each a unique version, reached its high estimate at auction, selling for $150,000. Produced in 1902, a brilliantly-hued Coke poster emblazoned “Drink Carbonated Coca-Cola in Bottles” featured a young woman in a fancy plumed hat and pearl-covered red dress holding a fountain glass of the fizzy beverage. It reached the top of its estimate range, selling for $40,800. An exquisite 1904

Coca-Cola boudoir clock, celluloid over cardboard with an embedded clock face showing the soft drink’s name in flowing script, was described in the catalog as being in excellentplus condition. It featured an elegantly gowned model in a Gibson Girl hairdo, standing beside a five-cent Coca-Cola display. The clock finished within estimate at $22,000. Not far behind at $21,600 was a rare version of a 1908 Coke calendar featuring a finely attired lady sipping daintily from a glass, with a bottle of the popular beverage placed prominently on the sofa-fountain table before her. Other highlights recorded in the Friday sale included a

A blockbuster lineup of more than 800 lots of antique advertising opened the doors to a three-day marathon of consistently strong prices at Morphy’s on Dec. 5 to 7. The combined total for the sessions, which also included fine and decorative art, was $2,184,000. All prices quoted include the company’s 20 percent buyer’s premium. The Friday advertising session’s prices realized were led by a historically important 1891 Coca-Cola calendar that came from the renowned Gordon P. Breslow collection. Years prior to Breslow’s acquisition of the near-mint rarity, it had surfaced in Louisiana within a pre-1900 pharmaceutical collection. The calendar was especially significant to collectors because it also promoted Asa

William Bunch Auctions Will Hold A Two-Day Sale On Feb. 23 And 24

PUBLIC AUCTION

SAT., FEBRUARY

Additionally, the sale will feature three large works by Mary’s father, Frank Stepler. Stepler was also an alumnus and former teacher of the PAFA. The three pieces, all completed in egg tempera, are vibrantly colored and brilliantly graphic. They include scenes of everyday life, as seen in “Grocery” and “Post-Industrial,” as well as a scene in “Surgery” that best reflects Stepler’s long time career as a medical illustrator. Also included in the sale will be Impressionistic landscapes by Pennsylvania artist Richard Chalfant and a pencil sketch by American realist painter Bo Bartlett. The fine art sale will

also include over 50 pieces from African American artist James Wilson Edwards. A veteran of World War II, Edwards went on to a prestigious art career, studying at both the Art Students’ League of New York and the Academie Julian in Paris. He was a longtime resident of Princeton, N.J., where he worked and exhibited. Working primarily in oils, Edwards’ pieces are distinctly surrealist in nature, exhibiting dream-like landscapes. The Gloves From Ali-Liston II In 1965 Are Ready For Auction event in history and a moment that perfectly encapsulates the turmoil and change of mid1960s America, will be sold as a set on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, in a high-end New York

sports auction celebrating the 50th anniversary of the event. The starting bid is $500,000. The gloves have been consigned to auction by Los Angeles, Calif., collector Seth Ersoff, who acquired the pair from the family of the boxing commissioner for the state of Maine in 1965, who seized the gloves after the bout’s scandalous end, Ali’s “Phantom Punch” just under two minutes into the first round. “It’s not out of line to place these gloves among the most important pieces of memorabilia to ever come to market,” said Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage Auctions, the company auctioning the gloves in its Platinum Night Sports Auction. “These transcend sports. The drama and outrage that swirled around the AliListon fights were a microcosm of America’s growing pains of the mid-1960s.” The first Ali-Liston battle had ended with Liston

refusing to come out for the seventh round. Controversy swirled about a fix and a clandestine contract. Ali, then still Cassius Clay, was reviled and feared for his association with Malcolm X and the Black Muslims, while Liston was widely suspected of having mob ties. There was no clear Good Guy/Bad Guy narrative, no one to cheer for; mid-century American exuberance had disappeared with Kennedy’s death and the shattering of American hegemony in the post-World War II era had begun. This fight seemed to encapsulate all of it. “The rematch was the first time that Muhammad Ali stepped into the ring as Muhammad Ali,” said Ivy. “Not only had he just officially changed his name, the fight and everything that happened around it, beginning to end, put Ali on the path to becoming not only the greatest boxer of all time, but also one of the most beloved human beings

Morphy

Maine,” writes a family member in an affidavit accompanying the glove. “As such, (he) was the person with authority over the heavyweight boxing championship fight between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston, which took place in Lewiston, Maine, on May 25, 1965. The Ali-Liston fight was very controversial because of the knockout which Liston suffered in the first round. As a result of the controversy, with the authority vested in him by the State of Maine as the State Boxing Commissioner, (he) seized the boxing gloves worn by both Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston.” The controversy lingered for quite some time, with Ali emerging in time as a cherished world figure and with Liston dying ignominiously, alone, in the waning days of 1970. which introduced the first 634 of 1,400 lots of fine and decorative art to be auctioned over the weekend, included early photographica, fine jewelry, coins, and bronzes, among other subcategories. Leading the numismatic lots was an 1803 $10 gold coin with Lady Liberty on the obverse and an American Eagle, U.S. Shield and stars on the reverse. It cashed out at $13,600. A beautiful 1876 20cent proof MS65 coin with “mint luster” exceeded its estimate range and sold for $9,000. The perennial appeal of Georg Jensen silver was evident with the above-estimate $6,000 price paid for an oval tea tray, 60 ozt, with reeded rim and beaded accents. An impressive 14-carat yellow gold and platinum ring with 1.2-carat solitaire diamond (VS1 clarity, G color) also exceeded expectations, reaching $5,800. The fine selection of bronzes included a Meroni Radice casting of Maurice Guiraud-Riviere’s anatomical figure of an athletic man, $4,800, and an 11-inch-

on the planet.” The moment of the fight is best captured in the famous Neil Leifer photograph, an image indelibly stamped upon the pages of collective consciousness and the cover shot of the 1999 Sports Illustrated retrospective “The Century’s Greatest Sports Photos.” The image, in which both pairs of these gloves can be clearly seen, expertly distills the Ali mystique even as it documents what is arguably the most atypical moment of his career. Only 2,434 fans were witness to the event, the smallest audience in Heavyweight Championship history and the continued existence of the gloves was unknown to the larger collecting world until a few years ago, when Ersoff reported his tale of ownership. The provenance, as documented in sworn affidavits and a letter from Ali himself, is rock solid: “In 1965, my uncle was the boxing commissioner for the State of

Morphy system exchange. Estimated at $4,000-$5,000, it connected with phone enthusiasts and sold for $12,000. Dozens of stunning American art-glass lamps followed the telephone selection, with all of the most desired brands represented, including Tiffany, Pairpoint, and Handel. Results included $15,000 for a Pairpoint Apple Blossom pattern lamp on tree trunk base and $8,400 for a Handel cameo lamp reverse-painted with the image of colorful parrots, which had been estimated at $1,500-$3,000. The star of the Sunday session was an 1890 Martin & Bros. stoneware Wally Bird humidor. Its cheeky expression, rare-color blue eyes and perfect condition combined to take it to a lofty $37,200. Other standouts in the decorative art category included a Roseville “Tourist” 33-inch jardinière and pedestal, $7,800, and a signed George Ohr teapot with lid, $5,400. Morphy Auctions’ next major Advertising auction will take place on Saturday, March 28, and will feature scarce soda fountain syrup dispensers. On Saturday, April 4, Morphy’s will hold its next Fine & Decorative Arts sale. To learn more, call 717335-3435, email info@morphy auctions.com, or visit www.morphyauctions.com.
